5. Exploring a type-theoretic approach to accessibility constraint modelling

Abstract: The type-theoretic modelling of DRT that [degroote06] proposed features continuations for the management of the context in which a clause has to be interpreted. This approach, while keeping the standard definitions of quantifier scope, translates the rules of the accessibility constraints of discourse referents inside the semantic recipes. In this paper, we deal with additional rules for these accessibility constraints. In particular in the case of discourse referents introduced by proper nouns, that negation does not block, and in the case of rhetorical relations that structure discourses. We show how this continuation-based approach applies to those accessibility constraints and how we can consider the parallel management of various principles.

After a break, caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the project was relaunched in early 2022 with a second working draft, which deals with certain issues in the annotation of quantification in a more satisfactory way than the original first working draft.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents a French version of the FraCaS test suite. This test suite, originally written in English, contains problems illustrating semantic inference in natural language. We describe linguistic choices we had to make when translating the FraCaS test suite in French, and discuss some of the issues that were raised by the translation. We also report an experiment we ran in order to test both the translation and the logical semantics underlying the problems of the test suite. This provides a way of checking formal semanticists' hypotheses against actual semantic capacity of speakers (in the present case, French speakers), and allow us to compare the results we obtained with the ones of similar experiments that have been conducted for other languages.

Abstract: Our project aimed at developing grammars for text parsing and generation, with a lexical description of the syntactic, semantic, and discourse properties of words. To this end, we have used the grammatical framework of Abstract Categorial Grammars (ACG). This framework allows us to describe reversible grammars, i.e., that are suitable both for parsing and for generation., Notre projet vise à développer des grammaires pour l'analyse et la génération de textes, avec une description des propriétés lexicales, syntactiques, sémantiques et discursives des mots. À cette fin nous avons utilisé le cadre grammatical des Grammaires Catégorielles Abstraites (ACG). Ce cadre nous a permis de décrire des grammaires réversibles, c'est-à-dire permettant à la fois l'analyse et la génération.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we propose to use Hybrid Logic (HL) as a means to combine frame-based lexical semantics with quantification. We integrate this into a syntax-semantics interface using LTAG (Lexicalized Tree Adjoining Grammar) and show that this architecture allows a fine-grained description of event structures by quantifying, for instance, over subevents. As a case study, we provide an analysis of for-adverbials and the aspectual interpretations they induce. The basic idea is that for-adverbials introduce a universal quantification over subevents that are characterized by the predication contributed by the verb. Depending on whether these subevents are bounded or not, the resulting overall event is then an iteration or a progression. We show that by combining the HL approach with standard techniques of underspecification and by using HL to formulate general constraints on event frames, we can account for the aspectual coercion triggered by these adverbials. Furthermore, by pairing this with syntactic building blocks in LTAG, we provide a working syntax-semantics interface for these phenomena.

Abstract: We present a formal logical approach using a combinatory categorial grammar for entity level sentiment analysis that utilizes machine learning techniques for efficient syntactical tagging and performs a deep structural analysis of the syntactical properties of texts in order to yield precise results. The method should be seen as an alternative to pure machine learning methods for sentiment analysis, which are argued to have high difficulties in capturing long distance dependencies, and can be dependent on significant amount of domain specific training data. The results show that the method yields high correctness, but further investment is needed in order to improve its robustness.

Abstract: International audience; Tree-Adjoining Grammars (TAG) have been used both for syntactic parsing, with sentential grammars, and for discourse parsing, with discourse grammars. But the modeling of discourse connectives (coordinate conjunctions, subordinate conjunctions , adverbs.. .) in TAG-based formalisms for discourse differ from their modeling in sentential grammars. Because of this mismatch, an intermediate, not TAG-related, processing step is required between the sentential and the discourse processes, both in parsing and in generation. We present a method to smoothly interface sentential and discourse TAG grammars, without using such an intermediate processing step. This method is based on Abstract Categorial Grammars (ACG) and relies on the modularity of the latter. It also provides the possibility, as in D-STAG, to build discourse structures that are direct acyclic graphs (DAG) and not only trees. All the examples may be run and tested with the appropriate software.

Abstract: International audience; This paper gives an Abstract Categorial Grammar (ACG) account of (Kallmeyer and Kuhlmann, 2012)'s process of transformation of the derivation trees of Tree Adjoining Grammar (TAG) into dependency trees. We make explicit how the requirement of keeping a direct interpretation of dependency trees into strings results into lexical ambiguity. Since the ACG framework has already been used to provide a logical semantics from TAG derivation trees, we have a unified picture where derivation trees and dependency trees are related but independent equivalent ways to account for the same surface--meaning relation.

Abstract: Colloque de Syntaxe et Sémantique à Paris (CSSP 2015); International audience; In this paper, we propose to use Hybrid Logic (HL) as a means to combine frame-based lexical semantics with quantification. We integrate this into an LTAG syntax-semantics interface and show that this architecture allows a fine-grained description of event structures by quantifying for instance over subevents. As a case study we provide an analysis of iteration and progression in combination with for-adverbials. With the HL approach and with standard techniques of underspecification we can account for the behaviour of these adverbials without the assumption of an additional iteration operator on events. This is due to the fact that frame semantics allows to express general constraints on event types that require an event to be an iteration in certain contexts.

Abstract: International audience; This paper aims at integrating logical operators into frame-based semantics. Frames are semantic graphs that allow to capture lexical meaning in a fine-grained way but that do not come with a natural way to integrate logical operators such as quantifiers. The approach we propose starts from the observation that modal logic is a powerful tool for describing relational structures, hence frames. We use its hybrid logic extension in order to incorporate quantification and thereby allow for inference and reasoning. We develop a type theoretic compositional semantics using this approach, formulated within Abstract Categorial Grammar.

Abstract: International audience; This article presents a method to interface a sentential grammar and a discourse grammar without resorting to an intermediate processing step. The method is general enough to build discourse structures that are direct acyclic graphs (DAG) and not only trees. Our analysis is based on Discourse Synchronous TAG (D-STAG), a Tree-Adjoining Grammar (TAG)-based approach to discourse. We also use an encoding of TAG into Abstract Categorial Grammar (ACG). This encoding allows us to express a higher-order semantic interpretation that enables building DAG discourse structures on the one hand, and to smoothly integrate the sentential and the discourse grammar thanks to the modular capability of ACG. All the examples of the article have been implemented and may be run and tested with the appropriate software.; Nous présentons une méthode pour articuler grammaire de phrase et grammaire de discours qui évite de recourir à une étape de traitement intermédiaire. Cette méthode est suffisamment générale pour construire des structures discursives qui ne soient pas des arbres mais des graphes orientés acycliques (DAG). Notre analyse s'appuie sur une approche de l'analyse discursive, Discourse Synchronous TAG (D-STAG), qui utilise les Grammaires d'Arbres Adjoint (TAG). Nous utilisons pour ce faire un encodage des TAG dans les Grammaires Catégorielles Abstraites (ACG). Cet encodage permet d'une part d'utiliser l'ordre supérieur pour l'interprétation sémantique afin de construire des structures qui soient des DAG et non des arbres, et d'autre part d'utiliser les propriétés de composition d'ACG pour réaliser naturellement l'interface entre grammaire phrastique et grammaire discursive. Tous les exemples proposés pour illustrer la méthode ont été implantés et peuvent être testés avec le logiciel approprié.

Abstract: International audience; G-TAG est un formalisme dédié à la génération de textes. Il s'appuie sur les Grammaires d'Arbres Adjoints (TAG) qu'il étend avec des notions propres permettant de construire une forme de surface à partir d'une représentation conceptuelle. Cette représentation conceptuelle est indépendante de la langue, et le formalisme G-TAG a été conçu pour la mise en œuvre de la synthèse dans une langue cible à partir de cette représentation. L'objectif de cet article est d'étudier G-TAG et les notions propres que ce formalisme introduit par le biais des Grammaires Catégorielles Abstraites (ACG) en exploitant leurs propriétés de réversibilité intrinsèque et leur propriété d'encodage des TAG. Nous montrons que les notions clefs d'arbre de g-dérivation et de lexicalisation en G-TAG s'expriment naturellement en ACG. La construction des formes de surface peut alors utiliser les algorithmes généraux associés aux ACG et certaines constructions absentes de G-TAG peuvent être prises en compte sans modification supplémentaire.

Abstract: International audience; Minimalist grammars (MGs) constitute a mildly context-sensitive formalism when being equipped with a particular locality condition (LC), the shortest move condition. In this format MGs define the same class of derivable string languages as multiple context-free grammars (MCFGs). Adding another LC to MGs, the specifier island condition (SPIC), results in a proper subclass of derivable languages. It is rather straightforward to see this class is embedded within the class of languages derivable by some well-nested MCFG (MCFG wn ). In this paper we show that the embedding is even proper. We partially do so adapting the methods used in [13] to characterize the separation of MCFG wn -languages from MCFG-languages by means of a "simple copying" theorem. The separation of strict derivational minimalism from well-nested MCFGs is then characterized by means of a "simple reverse copying" theorem. Since for MGs, well-nestedness seems to be a rather ad hoc restriction, whereas for MCFGs, this holds regarding the SPIC, our result may suggest we are concerned here with a structural difference between MGs and MCFGs which cannot immediately be overcome in a non-stipulated manner.

Abstract: These are the lecture notes of the ESSLLI 2009 second week course on Abstract Categorial Grammar. This was an advanced course, while an introductory course was given the first week: Introduction to Abstract Categorial Grammars: Foundations and main properties, delivered by Philippe de Groote and Sylvain Salvati. An up-to-date version of these notes, possible errata, and generally ACG papers, can be found at the ACG homepage: http://calligramme.loria.fr/acg. At this URL, the ACG Development Toolkit is also available and downloadable as free software. It might be useful to run some of the examples given in these notes. In particular, some of the latter are gathered in a special file. The Abstract Categorial Grammar (ACG) framework, a grammar formalism based on the typed lambda calculus, elegantly generalizes and unifies a variety of grammar formalisms that have been proposed for the description of formal and natural languages. The first part of the course investigated formal-language-theoretic properties of "second-order" ACGs, a subclass of ACGs that have "context-free" derivations. Their generative capacity was precisely characterized. Lecture notes for this part are available at http://research.nii.ac.jp/~kanazawa/publications/esslli2009_lectures.pdf. An efficient Earley-style algorithm, suitable both for parsing and generation, was then presented. The second part of the course (these present notes) presents linguistic applications of ACGs and gives various illustrations of how ACGs provide flexible and explicit ways to model the syntax-semantics interface of natural language.

Abstract: International audience; When trying to build the semantic representation of a natural language expression, it may happen that a single expression produces many semantic representations. In this paper, we focus on scope ambiguities where a single syntactic analysis can yield many semantic representations. There are basically two ways to address scope ambiguities. One way is to build two syntactic structures (parse trees) from a single expression, then, from these syntactic structures, to functionally build two semantic representations. The other way is to build a single syntactic structure and to associate to the latter, in a non-functional way, two semantic representations. These two ways are represented by two frameworks: the type-logical framework, where ambiguity is modeled by the process (proof search), and the underspecification framework, where ambiguity is modeled by a (formal) language. Our proposal aims at giving a proof-theoretic account of scope ambiguity that does not rely on syntactic ambiguity nor on another intermediate language. It is based on the Abstract Categorial Grammar (ACG) framework.

Abstract: International audience; Underlining the computational properties of Abstract Categorial Grammars, we show how to extend them while keeping some of their properties. In particular, we show how to enable the modeling of non-linear languages. We give as an example the encoding of an underspecified semantic representation language, and apply it to categorial grammars. So that we can model ambiguities of quantifier scopes only at the semantic level, and not at the syntactic level anymore.
