Search

Ram pressure stripping (RPS) is one of the most invoked mechanisms to explain the observed differences between cluster and field galaxies. In the local Universe, its effect on the galaxy star forming properties has been largely tackled and the general consensus is that this process first compresses the gas available in the galaxy disks, boosting the star formation for a limited amount of time, and then removes the remaining gas leading to quenching. Much less is known on the effect and preponderance of RPS at higher redshift, due to the lack of statistical samples. Exploiting VLT/MUSE observations of galaxies at 0.23sigma when considering the SFR occurring in both the tail and disk of galaxies. The enhancement is retrieved also on local scales: considering spatially resolved data, ram pressure stripped galaxies overall have large {\Sigma}SFR values, especially for Sigma_*>10^7.5M_sun kpc~2. RPS seems to leave the same imprint on the SFR-M* and Sigma_SFR-Sigma_* relations both in the Local Universe and at z~0.35., Comment: A&A in press

We study the role of star formation and stellar feedback in a galaxy being ram pressure stripped on its infall into a cluster. We use hydrodynamical wind-tunnel simulations of a massive galaxy ($M_\text{star} = 10^{11} M_\odot$) moving into a massive cluster ($M_\text{cluster} = 10^{15} M_\odot$). We have two types of simulations: with and without star formation and stellar feedback, SF and RC respectively. For each type we simulate four realisations of the same galaxy: a face-on wind, edge-on wind, $45^\circ$ angled wind, and a control galaxy not subject to ram pressure. We directly compare the stripping evolution of galaxies with and without star formation. We find that stellar feedback has no direct effect on the stripping process, i.e. there is no enhancement in stripping via a velocity kick to the interstellar medium gas. The main difference between RC and SF galaxies is due to the indirect effect of stellar feedback, which produces a smoother and more homogeneous interstellar medium. Hence, while the average gas surface density is comparable in both simulation types, the scatter is broader in the RC galaxies. As a result, at the galaxy outskirts overdense clumps survive in RC simulation, and the stripping proceeds more slowly. At the same time, in the inner disc, underdense gas in the RC holes is removed faster than the smoothly distributed gas in the SF simulation. We report on the serendipitous discovery of an unprecedented interaction between the radio lobe of a radio galaxy and a spiral galaxy. The discovery was made thanks to LOFAR observations at 144 MHz of the galaxy cluster Abell 160 ($z=0.04317$) provided by the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey. The new low-frequency observations revealed that one of the radio plumes of the central galaxy GIN 049 overlaps with the spiral galaxy JO36. Previous studies carried out with MUSE revealed that the warm ionized gas in the disk of JO36, traced by the H$\alpha$ emission, is severely truncated with respect to the stellar disk. We further explore this unique system by including new uGMRT observations at 675 MHz to map the spectral index. The emerging scenario is that JO36 has interacted with the radio plume in the past 200-500 Myr. The encounter resulted in a positive feedback event for JO36 in the form of a star formation rate burst of $\sim14$ $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. In turn, the galaxy passage left a trace in the radio-old plasma by re-shaping the old relativistic plasma via magnetic draping., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures. Cluster galaxies are affected by the surrounding environment, which influences, in particular, their gas, stellar content and morphology. In particular, the ram-pressure exerted by the intracluster medium promotes the formation of multi-phase tails of stripped gas detectable both at optical wavelengths and in the sub-mm and radio regimes, tracing the cold molecular and atomic gas components, respectively. In this work we analyze a sample of sixteen galaxies belonging to clusters at redshift $\sim 0.05$ showing evidence of an asymmetric HI morphology (based on MeerKAT observations) with and without a star forming tail. To this sample we add three galaxies with evidence of a star forming tail and no HI detection. Here we present the galaxies $\rm H_{2}$ gas content from APEX observations of the CO(2-1) emission. We find that in most galaxies with a star forming tail the $\rm H_{2}$ global content is enhanced with respect to undisturbed field galaxies with similar stellar masses, suggesting an evolutionary path driven by the ram-pressure stripping. As galaxies enter into the clusters their HI is displaced but also partially converted into $\rm H_{2}$, so that they are $\rm H_{2}$ enriched when they pass close to the pericenter, i. e. when they develop the star forming tails that are visible in UV/B broad bands and in H$\alpha$ emission. An inspection of the phase-space diagram for our sample suggests an anticorrelation between the HI and $\rm H_{2}$ gas phases as galaxies fall into the cluster potential. Exploiting broad- and narrow-band images of the Hubble Space Telescope from the near-UV to I-band rest frame, we study the star-forming clumps of six galaxies of the GASP sample undergoing strong ram pressure stripping. Clumps are detected in H alpha and near-UV, tracing star formation on different timescales. We consider clumps located in galaxy disks and stripped tails and formed in stripped gas but still close to the disk, called extraplanar. We detect 2406 H alpha-selected clumps (1708 in disks, 375 in extraplanar regions, and 323 in tails) and 3745 UV-selected clumps (2021 disk, 825 extraplanar, and 899 tail clumps). Only 15 per cent of star-forming clumps are spatially resolved, meaning that most are smaller than 140 pc. We study the luminosity and size distribution functions (LDFs and SDFs, respectively) and the luminosity-size relation. The average LDF slope is 1.79 +/- 0.09, while the average SDF slope is 3.1 +/- 0.5. The results suggest that the star formation is turbulence-driven and scale-free, as in main-sequence alaxies. All of the clumps, whether they are in the disks or tails, have an enhanced H alpha luminosity at a given size, compared to the clumps in main-sequence galaxies. Indeed, their H alpha luminosity is closer to that of clumps in starburst galaxies, indicating that ram pressure is able to enhance the luminosity. No striking differences are found among disk and tail clumps, suggesting that the different environments in which they are embedded play a minor role in influencing the star formation., Comment: 34 pages, 18 figures, 10 tables. Galaxy evolution can be dramatically affected by the environment, especially by the dense environment of a galaxy cluster. Recent observational studies show that massive galaxies undergoing strong ram pressure stripping (RPS) also show an enhanced frequency of nuclear activity. Here, we investigate this topic using a suite of wind-tunnel hydrodynamical simulations of an individual massive $M_\text{star} = 10^{11} M_\odot$ disk galaxy with 39 pc resolution and including star formation and stellar feedback. We find that RPS increases the inflow of gas to the galaxy centre regardless of the wind impact angle. This increase is driven by the mixing of interstellar and non-rotating intracluster media at all wind angles, and by increased torque on the inner disk gas, mainly from local pressure gradients when the ICM wind has an edge-on component. In turn, the increase in pressure torques is driven by rising gradient of ram pressure. We estimate the black hole (BH) accretion using Bondi-Hoyle and torque models, and compare it with the mass flux in the central 140 pc region. We find that the torque model estimates much less accretion onto the BH of a RPS galaxy than the Bondi-Hoyle estimator. However, we argue that both models are incomplete because the commonly used torque model does not account for torques caused by the gas distribution or local pressure gradients and the Bondi-Hoyle estimator depends on the the sound speed of the hot gas, which includes the ICM in stripped galaxies, thus a new estimator would be required., Comment: 26 pages, 17 figures, accepted to ApJ

Star-forming, H$\alpha$-emitting clumps are found embedded in the gaseous tails of galaxies undergoing intense ram-pressure stripping in galaxy clusters, so-called jellyfish galaxies. These clumps offer a unique opportunity to study star formation under extreme conditions, in the absence of an underlying disk and embedded within the hot intracluster medium. Yet, a comprehensive, high spatial resolution study of these systems is missing. We obtained UVIS/HST data to observe the first statistical sample of clumps in the tails and disks of six jellyfish galaxies from the GASP survey; we used a combination of broad-band filters and a narrow-band H{\alpha} filter. HST observations are needed to study the sizes, stellar masses and ages of the clumps and their clustering hierarchy. These observations will be used to study the clump scaling relations, the universality of the star formation process and verify whether a disk is irrelevant, as hinted by jellyfish galaxy results. This paper presents the observations, data reduction strategy, and some general results based on the preliminary data analysis: the UVIS high spatial resolution gives an unprecedented sharp view of the complex structure of the inner regions of the galaxies and of the substructures in the galaxy disks; we found clear signatures of stripping in regions very close in projection to the galactic disk; the star-forming regions in the stripped tails are extremely bright and compact while we did not detect a significant number of star-forming clumps outside those detected by MUSE. Stellar bars have been found to substantially influence the stellar populations properties in galaxies, affecting their ability of forming stars. While this can be easily seen when studying galaxies in relatively isolated environments, such kind of analysis takes a higher degree of complexity when cluster galaxies are considered, due to the variety of interactions which can potentially occur in these denser environments. We use IFU MUSE data from the GASP survey to study the combined effect of the presence of a stellar bar and of ram pressure, on spatially resolved properties of stellar populations. We have analyzed spatially resolved indicators of both recent SFR and average stellar population ages to check for signatures of anomalous central SF activity, also taking into account for the possible presence of nuclear activity. We found an increase of central SFR in ram pressure affected galaxies when compared with unperturbed ones. The most extreme cases of increase SFR and central rejuvenation occur in barred galaxies that are at advanced stages of ram pressure stripping. For low-mass barred galaxies affected by ram pressure, the combined effect is a systematic enhancement of the star formation activity as opposed to the case of high-mass galaxies that present both enhancement and suppression. Barred galaxies that present a suppression of their star formation activity also present signatures of nuclear activity. Our results indicate that the combined effect of the presence of a bar and a strong perturbation by ram pressure is able to trigger the central SF activity and probably ignite nuclear activity., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables. WEAVE, the new wide-field, massively multiplexed spectroscopic survey facility for the William Herschel Telescope, will see first light in late 2022. WEAVE comprises a new 2-degree field-of-view prime-focus corrector system, a nearly 1000-multiplex fibre positioner, 20 individually deployable 'mini' integral field units (IFUs), and a single large IFU. These fibre systems feed a dual-beam spectrograph covering the wavelength range 366$-$959\,nm at $R\sim5000$, or two shorter ranges at $R\sim20\,000$. After summarising the design and implementation of WEAVE and its data systems, we present the organisation, science drivers and design of a five- to seven-year programme of eight individual surveys to: (i) study our Galaxy's origins by completing Gaia's phase-space information, providing metallicities to its limiting magnitude for $\sim$3 million stars and detailed abundances for $\sim1.5$ million brighter field and open-cluster stars; (ii) survey $\sim0.4$ million Galactic-plane OBA stars, young stellar objects and nearby gas to understand the evolution of young stars and their environments; (iii) perform an extensive spectral survey of white dwarfs; (iv) survey $\sim400$ neutral-hydrogen-selected galaxies with the IFUs; (v) study properties and kinematics of stellar populations and ionised gas in $z<0.5$ cluster galaxies; (vi) survey stellar populations and kinematics in $\sim25\,000$ field galaxies at $0.3\lesssim z \lesssim 0.7$; (vii) study the cosmic evolution of accretion and star formation using $>1$ million spectra of LOFAR-selected radio sources; (viii) trace structures using intergalactic/circumgalactic gas at $z>2$. Integral field spectroscopic studies of galaxies in dense environments, such as clusters and groups of galaxies, have provided new insights for understanding how star formation proceeds, and quenches. I present the spatially resolved view of the star formation activity and its link with the multiphase gas in cluster galaxies based on MUSE and multi-wavelength data of the GASP survey. I discuss the link among the different scales (i.e. the link between the spatially resolved and the global star formation rate-stellar mass relation), the spatially resolved signatures and the quenching histories of jellyfish (progenitors) and post-starburst (descendants) galaxies in clusters. We present a study of barred galaxies in the cluster environment, exploiting a sample of galaxies drawn from the extended WIde-field Nearby Galaxy-cluster Survey (OmegaWINGS) that covers up to the outer regions of 32 local X-ray selected clusters. Barred galaxies are identified through a semi-automatic analysis of ellipticity and position angle profiles. We find, in agreement with previous studies, a strong co-dependence of the bar fraction with the galaxy stellar mass and morphological type, being maximum for massive late-type galaxies. The fraction of barred galaxies decreases with increasing cluster mass and with decreasing clustercentric distance, a dependence that vanishes once we control for morphological type, which indicates that the likelihood of a galaxy hosting a bar in the cluster environment is determined by its morphological transformation. At large clustercentric distances, we detect a dependence on the distance to the nearest neighbor galaxy, suggesting that tidal forces with close companions are able to suppress the formation of bars or even destroy them. Barred galaxies in our sample are either early-type, star forming galaxies located within the virial radii of the clusters or late-type quenched galaxies found beyond the virial radii of the clusters. We propose a scenario in which already quenched barred galaxies that fall into the clusters are centrally rejuvenated by the interplay of the perturbed gas by ram-pressure and the bar, in galaxies that are undergoing a morphological transformation., Comment: 17 pages,9 figures, 1 table, accepted in ApJ

We present MeerKAT HI observations of six jellyfish candidate galaxies (JFCGs) in the galaxy cluster, A2626. Two of the six galaxies JW100 and JW103, that were identified as JFCGs from B-band images, are confirmed as jellyfish galaxies (JFGs). Both of the JFGs have low HI content, reside in the cluster core, and move at very high velocities ($\sim$ 3$\sigma_{cl}$). The other JFCGs, identified as non-jellyfish galaxies, are HI rich, with HI morphologies revealing warps, asymmetries, and possible tidal interactions. Both the A2626 JFGs and three other confirmed JFGs from the GASP sample show that these galaxies are HI stripped but not yet quenched. We detect HI, Halpha, and CO tails of similar extent ($\sim$ 50 kpc) in JW100. Comparing the multi-phase velocity channels, we do not detect any HI or CO emission in the northern section of the tail where Halpha emission is present, possibly due to prolonged interaction between the stripped gas and the ICM. We also observe an anti-correlation between HI and CO, which hints at an efficient conversion of HI to H2 in the southern part of the tail. We find that both RPS and HI-to-H2 conversion are significant depletion channels for atomic gas. Jellyfish galaxies, characterized by long filaments of stripped interstellar medium extending from their disks, are the prime laboratories to study the outcomes of ram pressure stripping. At radio wavelengths, they often show unilateral emission extending beyond the stellar disk, and an excess of radio luminosity with respect to that expected from their current star formation rate. We present new 144 MHz images provided by the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey for a sample of six galaxies from the GASP survey. These galaxies are characterized by a high global luminosity at 144 MHz ($6-27\times10^{22}$ W Hz$^{-1}$), in excess compared to their ongoing star formation rate. The comparison of radio and H$\alpha$ images smoothed with a Gaussian beam corresponding to $\sim$10 kpc reveals a sub-linear spatial correlation between the two emissions with an average slope $k=0.50$. In their stellar disk we measure $k=0.77$, which is close to the radio-to-star formation linear relation. We speculate that, as a consequence of the ram pressure, in these jellyfish galaxies the cosmic rays transport is more efficient than in normal galaxies. Radio tails typically have higher radio-to-H$\alpha$ ratios than the disks, thus we suggest that the radio emission is boosted by the electrons stripped from the disks. In all galaxies, the star formation rate has decreased by a factor $\leq10$ within the last $\sim10^8$ yr. The observed radio emission is consistent with the past star formation, so we propose that this recent decline may be the cause of their radio luminosity-to-star formation rate excess., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures. X-ray studies of jellyfish galaxies opened a window in the physics of the interplay between intracluster medium (ICM) and interstellar medium (ISM). In this paper, we present the study of an archival \textit{Chandra} observation of the GASP jellyfish galaxy JO194. We observe X-ray emission extending from the stellar disk to the unwinding spiral arms with an average temperature of $kT=0.79\pm0.03$ keV. To investigate the origin of the X-ray emission, we compare the observed X-ray luminosities with those expected from the star formation rates (SFR) obtained from H$\alpha$ emission. We estimate an X-ray luminosity excess of a factor $\sim2-4$ with respect to the SF, therefore we conclude that SF is not the main responsible for the extended X-ray emission of JO194. The metallicity in the spiral arms ($Z=0.24^{+0.19}_{-0.12} Z_{\odot}$) is consistent with that of the ICM around JO194 ($Z=0.35\pm0.07$), thus we suggest that the ICM radiative cooling dominates the X-ray emission of the arms. We speculate that the X-ray plasma results from the ISM-ICM interplay, although the nature of this interplay is still mostly unknown. Finally, we observe that the X-ray properties of JO194 are consistent with those of two other GASP galaxies with different stellar mass, phase-space conditions in their hosting clusters, and local ICM conditions. We suggest that the conditions required to induce extended X-ray emission in jellyfish galaxies are established at the beginning of the stripping, and they can persist on long time scales so that galaxies in different clusters and evolutionary stages can present similar extended X-ray emission., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication on ApJ, on date 1st August 2022

We present a new approach to observationally constrain where the tails of Jellyfish (JF) galaxies in groups and clusters first appear and how long they remain visible with respect to the moment of their orbital pericenter. This is accomplished by measuring the distribution of their tail directions with respect to their host's center, and their distribution in a projected velocity-radius phase-diagram. We then model these observed distributions using a fast and flexible approach where JF tails are painted onto dark matter halos according to a simple parameterised prescription, and perform a Bayesian analysis to estimate the parameters. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach using observational mocks, and then apply it to a known observational sample of 106 JF galaxies with radio continuum tails located inside 68 hosts such as groups and clusters. We find that, typically, the radio continuum tails become visible on first infall when the galaxy reaches roughly three quarters of r$_{200}$, and the tails remain visible for a few hundred Myr after pericenter passage. Lower mass galaxies in more massive hosts tend to form visible tails further out and their tails disappear more quickly after pericenter. We argue that this indicates they are more sensitive to ram pressure stripping. Hydrodynamical simulations show that the ram-pressure stripping in galaxy clusters fosters a strong interaction between stripped interstellar medium (ISM) and the surrounding medium, with the possibility of intracluster medium (ICM) cooling into cold gas clouds. Exploiting the MUSE observation of three jellyfish galaxies from the GAs Stripping Phenomena in galaxies with MUSE (GASP) survey, we explore the gas metallicity of star-forming clumps in their gas tails. We find that the oxygen abundance of the stripped gas decreases as a function of the distance from the parent galaxy disk; the observed metallicity profiles indicate that more than 40% of the most metal-poor stripped clouds are constituted by cooled ICM, in qualitative agreement with simulations that predict mixing between the metal-rich ISM and the metal-poor ICM., Comment: Accepted for pubblication in ApJL. 9 pages, 4 figures, and 1 table

Ram-pressure stripping by the intracluster medium (ICM) is one of the most advocated mechanisms that affect the properties of cluster galaxies. A recent study based on a small sample has found that many galaxies showing strong signatures of ram-pressure stripping also possess an active galactic nucleus (AGN), suggesting a possible correlation between the two phenomena. This result has not been confirmed by a subsequent study. Building upon previous findings, here we combine MUSE observations conducted within the GASP program and a general survey of the literature to robustly measure the AGN fraction in cluster's ram pressure stripped galaxies using BPT emission line diagrams. Considering a sample of 115 ram pressure stripped galaxies with stellar masses $\geq 10^9 \, M_{\odot}$, we find an AGN fraction of $\sim27\%$. This fraction strongly depends on stellar mass: it raises to 51% when only ram-pressure stripped galaxies of masses $M_* \geq 10^{10} \, M_{\odot}$ are considered. We then investigate whether the AGN incidence is in excess in ram pressure stripped galaxies compared to non-stripped galaxies, using as comparison a sample of non-cluster galaxies observed by the survey MaNGA. Considering mass-matched samples, we find that the incidence of AGN activity is significantly higher (at a confidence level $>99.95\%$) when ram-pressure stripping is on act, supporting the hypothesis of an AGN-ram pressure connection., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, table3 and table4 available in machine-readable format. Ram pressure stripping is a crucial evolutionary driver for cluster galaxies. It is thought to be able to accelerate the evolution of their star formation, trigger the activity of their central active galactic nucleus (AGN) and the interplay between the galactic and environmental gas, and eventually dissipate their gas reservoir. We explored the outcomes of ram pressure stripping by studying the non-thermal radio emission of the jellyfish galaxy JW100 in the cluster Abell 2626 ($z=0.055$) by combining LOFAR, MeerKAT, and VLA observations from 0.144 to 5.5 GHz. We studied the integrated spectra of the stellar disk, the stripped tail and the AGN, mapped the spectral index over the galaxy, and constrained the magnetic field intensity to be between 11 and 18 $\mu$G in the disk and $<10$ $\mu$G in the tail. The stellar disk radio emission is dominated by a radiatively old plasma, likely related to an older phase of high star formation rate. This suggests that the star formation was quickly quenched by a factor of 4 in a few $10^7$ yr. The radio emission in the tail is consistent with the stripping scenario, where the radio plasma originally accelerated in the disk is then displaced in the tail. The morphology of the radio and X-ray emissions supports the scenario of accretion of the magnetized environmental plasma onto the galaxy. The AGN non-thermal spectrum indicates that the relativistic electron acceleration may have occurred simultaneously with a central ionized gas outflow, thus suggesting a physical connection between the two processes., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures. Making use of both MUSE observations of 85 galaxies from the survey GASP (GAs Stripping Phenomena in galaxies with MUSE) and a large sample from MaNGA (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory survey) we investigate the distribution of gas metallicity gradients as a function of stellar mass, for local cluster and field galaxies. Overall, metallicity profiles steepen with increasing stellar mass up to $10^{10.3}\,{\rm M_\odot}$ and flatten out at higher masses. Combining the results from the metallicity profiles and the stellar mass surface density gradients, we propose that the observed steepening is a consequence of local metal enrichment due to in-situ star formation during the inside-out formation of disk galaxies. The metallicity gradient-stellar mass relation is characterized by a rather large scatter, especially for $10^{9.8}<{\rm M_\star/M_\odot}<10^{10.5}$, and we demonstrate that metallicity gradients anti-correlate with the galaxy gas fraction. Focusing on the galaxy environment, at any given stellar mass, cluster galaxies have systematically flatter metallicity profiles than their field counterparts. Many sub-populations coexist in clusters: galaxies with shallower metallicity profiles appear to have fallen into their present host halo sooner and have experienced the environmental effects for a longer time than cluster galaxies with steeper metallicity profiles. Recent galaxy infallers, like galaxies currently undergoing ram-pressure stripping, show metallicity gradients more similar to those of field galaxies, suggesting they have not felt the effect of the cluster yet., Comment: Accepted for pubblication in ApJ. 25 pages, 11 figures, and 2 tables

The diffuse ionized gas (DIG) is an important component of the interstellar medium that can provide insights into the different physical processes affecting the gas in galaxies. We utilise optical IFU observations of 71 gas-stripped and control galaxies from the Gas Stripping Phenomena in galaxies (GASP) survey, to analyze the gas properties of the dense ionized gas and the DIG, such as metallicity, ionization parameter log(q), and the difference between the measured $\log[OI]/H\alpha$ and the value predicted by star-forming models, given the measured log[OIII]/H$\beta$ ($\Delta log[OI]/H\alpha$). We compare these properties at different spatial scales, among galaxies at different gas-stripping stages, and between disks and tails of the stripped galaxies. The metallicity is similar between the dense gas and DIG at a given galactocentric radius. The log(q) is lower for DIG compared to dense gas. The median values of log(q) correlate best with stellar mass, and the most massive galaxies show an increase in log(q) toward their galactic centers. The DIG clearly shows higher $\Delta log[OI]/H\alpha$ values compared to the dense gas, with much of the spaxels having LIER/LINER like emission. The DIG regions in the tails of highly stripped galaxies show the highest $\Delta log[OI]/H\alpha$, exhibit high values of log(q) and extend to large projected distances from star-forming areas (up to 10 kpc). The diffuse ionized gas (DIG) is an important component of the interstellar medium and it can be affected by many physical processes in galaxies. Measuring its distribution and contribution in emission allows us to properly study both its ionization and star formation in galaxies. Here, we measure for the first time the DIG emission in 38 gas-stripped galaxies in local clusters drawn from the GAs Stripping Phenomena in galaxies with MUSE survey (GASP). These galaxies are at different stages of stripping. We also compare the DIG properties to those of 33 normal galaxies from the same survey. To estimate the DIG fraction (C$_{DIG}$) and derive its maps, we combine attenuation corrected H$\alpha$ surface brightness with $\rm [SII]/H\alpha$ line ratio. Our results indicate that we cannot use neither a single H$\alpha$ or $\rm [SII]/H\alpha$ value, nor a threshold in equivalent width of H$\alpha$ emission line to separate spaxels dominated by DIG and non-DIG emission. Assuming a constant surface brightness of the DIG across galaxies underestimates C$_{DIG}$. Contrasting stripped and non-stripped galaxies, we find no clear differences in C$_{DIG}$. The DIG emission contributes between 20\% and 90\% of the total integrated flux, and does not correlate with the galactic stellar mass and star-formation rate (SFR). The C$_{DIG}$ anti-correlates with the specific SFR, which may indicate an older ($>10^8$ yr) stellar population as ionizing source of the DIG. We present the first study of the effect of ram-pressure "unwinding" the spiral arms of cluster galaxies. We study 11 ram-pressure stripped galaxies from GASP (GAs Stripping Phenomena in galaxies) in which, in addition to more commonly observed "jellyfish" features, dislodged material also appears to retain the original structure of the spiral arms. Gravitational influence from neighbours is ruled out and we compare the sample with a control group of undisturbed spiral galaxies and simulated stripped galaxies. We first confirm the unwinding nature, finding the spiral arm pitch angle increases radially in 10 stripped galaxies and also simulated face-on and edge-on stripped galaxies. We find only younger stars in the unwound component, while older stars in the disc remain undisturbed. We compare the morphology and kinematics with simulated ram-pressure stripping galaxies, taking into account the estimated inclination with respect to the intracluster medium and find that in edge-on stripping, unwinding can occur due to differential ram-pressure caused by the disc rotation, causing stripped material to slow and "pile-up". In face-on cases, gas removed from the outer edges falls to higher orbits, appearing to "unwind". The pattern is fairly short-lived (<0.5Gyr) in the stripping process, occurring during first infall and eventually washed out by the ICM wind into the tail of the jellyfish galaxy. By comparing simulations with the observed sample, we find a combination of face-on and edge-on "unwinding" effects are likely to be occurring in our galaxies as they experience stripping with different inclinations with respect to the ICM., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 30 pages, 17 figures

We present the first public data release of the GOGREEN and GCLASS surveys of galaxies in dense environments, spanning a redshift range $0.8

Using MUSE observations from the GASP survey, we study 54 galaxies undergoing ram-pressure stripping (RPS) spanning a wide range in galaxy mass and host cluster mass. We use this rich sample to study how the star formation rate (SFR) in the tails of stripped gas depends on the properties of the galaxy and its host cluster. We show that the interplay between all the parameters involved is complex and that there is not a single, dominant one in shaping the observed amount of SFR. Hence, we develop a simple analytical approach to describe the mass fraction of stripped gas and the SFR in the tail, as a function of the cluster velocity dispersion, galaxy stellar mass, clustercentric distance and speed in the intracluster medium. Our model provides a good description of the observed gas truncation radius and of the fraction of star-formation rate (SFR) observed in the stripped tails, once we take into account the fact that the star formation efficiency in the tails is a factor $\sim 5$ lower than in the galaxy disc, in agreement with GASP ongoing HI and CO observations. We finally estimate the contribution of RPS to the intracluster light (ICL) and find that the average SFR in the tails of ram-pressure stripped gas is $\sim 0.22 M_{\odot}\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1} $ per cluster. By extrapolating this result to evaluate the contribution to the ICL at different epochs, we compute an integrated average value per cluster of $\sim 4 \times 10^9 M_\odot$ of stars formed in the tails of RPS galaxies since $z\sim 1$., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Galaxies undergoing ram pressure stripping in clusters are an excellent opportunity to study the effects of environment on both the AGN and the star formation activity. We report here on the most recent results from the GASP survey. We discuss the AGN-ram pressure stripping connection and some evidence for AGN feedback in stripped galaxies. Exploiting the data from the GAs Stripping Phenomena in galaxies with MUSE (GASP) survey, we study the gas-phase metallicity scaling relations of a sample of 29 cluster galaxies undergoing ram-pressure stripping and of a reference sample of (16 cluster and 16 field) galaxies with no significant signs of gas disturbance. We adopt the PYQZ code to infer the mean gas metallicity at the effective radius and achieve a well-defined mass-metallicity relation (MZR) in the stellar mass range $10^{9.25}\le M_\star \le 10^{11.5}\,{\rm M_\odot}$ with a scatter of 0.12 dex. At any given mass, reference cluster and stripping galaxies have similar metallicities, while the field galaxies with $M_\star < 10^{10.25}\,{\rm M_\odot}$ show on average lower gas metallicity than galaxies in clusters. Our results indicate that at the effective radius the chemical properties of the stripping galaxies are independent of the ram-pressure stripping mechanism. Nonetheless, at the lowest masses we detect 4 stripping galaxies well above the common MZR that suggest a more complex scenario. Overall, we find signs of an anti-correlation between the metallicity and both the star formation rate and the galaxy size, in agreement with previous studies. No significant trends are instead found with the halo mass, clustercentric distance and local galaxy density in clusters. We present JVLA-C observations of the HI gas in JO204, one of the most striking jellyfish galaxies from the GASP survey. JO204 is a massive galaxy in the low-mass cluster Abell 957 at z=0.04243. The HI map reveals an extended 90 kpc long ram-pressure stripped tail of neutral gas, stretching beyond the 30 kpc long ionized gas tail and pointing away from the cluster center. The HI mass seen in emission is (1.32 $ \pm 0.13) \times 10^{9} \rm M_{\odot}$, mostly located in the tail. The northern part of the galaxy disk has retained some HI gas, while the southern part has already been completely stripped and displaced into an extended unilateral tail. Comparing the distribution and kinematics of the neutral and ionized gas in the tail indicates a highly turbulent medium. Moreover, we observe associated HI absorption against the 11 mJy central radio continuum source with an estimated HI absorption column density of 3.2 $\times 10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$. The absorption profile is significantly asymmetric with a wing towards higher velocities. We modelled the HI absorption by assuming that the HI and ionized gas disks have the same kinematics in front of the central continuum source, and deduced a wider absorption profile than observed. The observed asymmetric absorption profile can therefore be explained by a clumpy, rotating HI gas disk seen partially in front of the central continuum source, or by ram-pressure pushing the neutral gas towards the center of the continuum source, triggering the AGN activity., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a detailed analysis of star formation properties of galaxies in a nearby ($z\sim0.046$) young ($\sim$0.6 Gyr) post-merger cluster system A3376, with a moderate shock front ( $v_{s}\sim$1630 km/s) observed as symmetric radio relics. Exploiting the spectroscopic data from the wide-field OmegaWINGS survey and the associated photometric information, our investigations reveal the plausible effects of the dynamic post-merger environment differing from the putative pre-merger cluster environment. The remnants of the pre-merger relaxed cluster environment are realised through the existence of passive spiral galaxies located in the central regions of the cluster between the two BCGs. We discover A3376 to contain a population of massive $(M_{*}/M_{\odot})>10$) blue regular star-forming spirals in regions of maximum merger shock influence but exhibiting star formation rates similar to those in relaxed clusters at similar epoch. We further discover low-mass (Log $(M_{*}/M_{\odot})\leq 10$) late-type blue PSBs which could either be formed as a result of rapid quenching of low-mass spirals following the shock-induced star formation or due to the intense surge in the ICM pressures at the beginning of the merger. With the possibility of the merger shock affecting high- and low-mass spirals differently, our results bridge the seemingly contradictory results observed in known merging cluster systems so far and establish that different environmental effects are at play right from pre- to post-merger stage., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, submitted to Monthly Notices of Royal Astronomy Society (MNRAS)

With MUSE, Chandra, VLA, ALMA and UVIT data from the GASP programme we study the multiphase baryonic components in a jellyfish galaxy (JW100) with a stellar mass 3.2 X 10^{11} M_sun hosting an AGN. We present its spectacular extraplanar tails of ionized and molecular gas, UV stellar light, X-ray and radio continuum emission. This galaxy represents an excellent laboratory to study the interplay between different gas phases and star formation, and the influence of gas stripping, gas heating, and AGN. We analyze the physical origin of the emission at different wavelengths in the tail, in particular in-situ star formation (related to Halpha, CO and UV emission), synchrotron emission from relativistic electrons (producing the radio continuum) and heating of the stripped interstellar medium (ISM) (responsible for the X-ray emission). We show the similarities and differences of the spatial distributions of ionized gas, molecular gas and UV light, and argue that the mismatch on small scales (1kpc) is due to different stages of the star formation process. We present the relation Halpha--X-ray surface brightness, which is steeper for star-forming regions than for diffuse ionised gas regions with high [OI]/Halpha ratio. We propose that ISM heating due to interaction with the intracluster medium (either for mixing, thermal conduction or shocks) is responsible for the X-ray tail, the observed [OI]-excess and the lack of star formation in the northern part of the tail. We also report the tentative discovery in the tail of the most distant (and among the brightest) currently known ULX, a point-like ultraluminous X-ray source commonly originating in a binary stellar system powered either by an intermediate-mass black hole or a magnetized neutron star., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

Exploiting the sample of 30 local star-forming, undisturbed late-type galaxies in different environments drawn from the GAs Stripping Phenomena in galaxies with MUSE (GASP), we investigate the spatially resolved Star Formation Rate-Mass ({\Sigma}SFR-{\Sigma}_star) relation. Our analysis includes also the galaxy outskirts (up to >4 effective radii, re), a regime poorly explored by other Integral Field Spectrograph surveys. Our observational strategy allows us to detect H{\alpha} out to more than 2.7re for 75% of the sample. Considering all galaxies together, the correlation between the {\Sigma}SFR and {\Sigma}_star is quite broad, with a scatter of 0.3 dex. It gets steeper and shifts to higher {\Sigma}_star values when external spaxels are excluded and moving from less to more massive galaxies. The broadness of the overall relation suggests galaxy-by-galaxy variations. Indeed, each object is characterized by a distinct {\Sigma}SFR-{\Sigma}_star relation and in some cases the correlation is very loose. The scatter of the relation mainly arises from the existence of bright off-center star-forming knots whose {\Sigma}SFR-{\Sigma}_star relation is systematically broader than that of the diffuse component. The {\Sigma}SFR-{\Sigma}tot gas (total gas surface density) relation is as broad as the {\Sigma}SFR-{\Sigma}_star relation, indicating that the surface gas density is not a primary driver of the relation. Even though a large galaxy-by-galaxy variation exists, mean {\Sigma}SFR and {\Sigma}_star values vary of at most 0.7 dex across galaxies. Galaxy filaments are a peculiar environment, and their impact on the galaxy properties is still controversial. Exploiting the data from the GAs Stripping Phenomena in galaxies with MUSE (GASP), we provide the first characterisation of the spatially resolved properties of galaxies embedded in filaments in the local Universe. The four galaxies we focus on show peculiar ionised gas distributions: Halpha clouds have been observed beyond four times the effective radius. The gas kinematics, metallicity map and the ratios of emission line fluxes confirm that they do belong to the galaxy gas disk, the analysis of their spectra shows that very weak stellar continuum is associated to them. Similarly, the star formation history and luminosity weighted age maps point to a recent formation of such clouds. The clouds are powered by star formation, and are characterised by intermediate values of dust absorption. We hypothesise a scenario in which the observed features are due to "Cosmic Web Enhancement": we are most likely witnessing galaxies passing through or flowing within filaments that assist the gas cooling and increase the extent of the star formation in the densest regions in the circumgalactic gas. Based on MUSE data from the GASP survey, we study the Halpha-emitting extraplanar tails of 16 cluster galaxies at z~0.05 undergoing ram pressure stripping. We demonstrate that the dominating ionization mechanism of this gas (between 64% and 94% of the Halpha emission in the tails depending on the diagnostic diagram used) is photoionization by young massive stars due to ongoing star formation (SF) taking place in the stripped tails. This SF occurs in dynamically quite cold HII clumps with a median Halpha velocity dispersion sigma = 27 km s^-1. We study the characteristics of over 500 star-forming clumps in the tails and find median values of Halpha luminosity L_{Halpha} = 4 X 10^38 erg s^-1, dust extinction A_V=0.5 mag, star formation rate SFR=0.003 M_sun yr^-1, ionized gas density n_e =52 cm^-3, ionized gas mass M_gas = 4 X 10^4 Msun, and stellar mass M_{*} = 3 X 10^6 Msun. The tail clumps follow scaling relations (M_gas-M_{*}, L_{Halpha} -sigma, SFR-M_gas) similar to disk clumps, and their stellar masses are comparable to Ultra Compact Dwarfs and Globular Clusters.The diffuse gas component in the tails is ionized by a combination of SF and composite/LINER-like emission likely due to thermal conduction or turbulence. The stellar photoionization component of the diffuse gas can be due either to leakage of ionizing photons from the HII clumps with an average escape fraction of 18%, or lower luminosity HII regions that we cannot individually identify., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

Exploiting the data from the GAs Stripping Phenomena in galaxies with MUSE (GASP) program, we compare the integrated Star Formation Rate- Mass relation (SFR-M_ast) relation of 42 cluster galaxies undergoing ram pressure stripping ("stripping galaxies") to that of 32 field and cluster undisturbed galaxies. Theoretical predictions have so far led to contradictory conclusions about whether ram pressure can enhance the star formation in the gas disks and tails or not and until now a statistically significant observed sample of stripping galaxies was lacking. We find that stripping galaxies occupy the upper envelope of the control sample SFR-M_ast relation, showing a systematic enhancement of the SFR at any given mass. The star formation enhancement occurs in the disk (0.2 dex), and additional star formation takes place in the tails. Our results suggest that strong ram pressure stripping events can moderately enhance the star formation also in the disk prior to gas removal., Comment: ApJL in press

GAs Stripping Phenomena in galaxies with MUSE (GASP) is a program aimed at studying gas removal processes in nearby galaxies in different environments. We present the study of four galaxies that are part of the same group (z= 0.06359) and highlight the multitude of mechanisms affecting the spatially resolved properties of the group members. One galaxy is passive and shows a regular stellar kinematics. The analysis of its star formation history indicates that the quenching process lasted for a few Gyr and that the star formation declined throughout the disk in a similar way, consistent with strangulation. Another galaxy is characterised by a two-component stellar disk with an extended gas disk that formed a few 10^8 yr ago, most likely as a consequence of gas accretion. The third member is a spiral galaxy at the edges of the group, but embedded in a filament. We hypothesise that the compression exerted by the sparse intergalactic medium on the dense circumgalactic gas switches on star formation in a number of clouds surrounding the galaxy ("cosmic web enhancement"). Alternatively, also ram pressure stripping might be effective. Finally, the fourth galaxy is a spiral with a truncated ionised gas disk and an undisturbed stellar kinematics. An analytical model of the galaxy's restoring pressure, and its location and velocity within the cluster, suggest ram pressure is the most likely physical mechanism in action. It is well known that galaxies falling into clusters can experience gas stripping due to ram-pressure by the intra-cluster medium (ICM). The most spectacular examples are galaxies with extended tails of optically-bright stripped material known as "jellyfish". We use the first large homogeneous compilation of jellyfish galaxies in clusters from the WINGS and OmegaWINGS surveys, and follow-up MUSE observations from the GASP MUSE programme to investigate the orbital histories of jellyfish galaxies in clusters and reconstruct their stripping history through position vs. velocity phase- space diagrams. We construct analytic models to define the regions in phase-space where ram-pressure stripping is at play. We then study the distribution of cluster galaxies in phase-space and find that jellyfish galaxies have on average higher peculiar velocities (and higher cluster velocity dispersion) than the overall population of cluster galaxies at all clustercentric radii, which is indicative of recent infall into the cluster and radial orbits. In particular, the jellyfish galaxies with the longest gas tails reside very near the cluster cores (in projection) and are moving at very high speeds, which coincides with the conditions of the most intense ram-pressure. We conclude that many of the jellyfish galaxies seen in clusters likely formed via fast (~1- 2 Gyr), incremental, outside-in ram-pressure stripping during first infall into the cluster in highly radial orbits., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, MNRAS in press

In the context of the GAs Stripping Phenomena in galaxies with Muse (GASP) survey, we present the characterization of JO204, a jellyfish galaxy in A957, a relatively low-mass cluster with $M=4.4 \times10^{14}M_\odot$. This galaxy shows a tail of ionized gas that extends up to 30 kpc from the main body in the opposite direction of the cluster center. No gas emission is detected in the galaxy outer disk, suggesting that gas stripping is proceeding outside-in. The stellar component is distributed as a regular disk galaxy; the stellar kinematics shows a symmetric rotation curve with a maximum radial velocity of 200km/s out to 20 kpc from the galaxy center. The radial velocity of the gas component in the central part of the disk follows the distribution of the stellar component; the gas kinematics in the tail retains the rotation of the galaxy disk, indicating that JO204 is moving at high speed in the intracluster medium. Both the emission and radial velocity maps of the gas and stellar components indicate ram-pressure as the most likely primary mechanism for gas stripping, as expected given that JO204 is close to the cluster center and it is likely at the first infall in the cluster. The spatially resolved star formation history of JO204 provides evidence that the onset of ram-pressure stripping occurred in the last 500 Myr, quenching the star formation activity in the outer disk, where the gas has been already completely stripped. When supermassive black holes at the center of galaxies accrete matter (usually gas), they give rise to highly energetic phenomena named Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). A number of physical processes have been proposed to account for the funneling of gas towards the galaxy centers to feed the AGN. There are also several physical processes that can strip gas from a galaxy, and one of them is ram pressure stripping in galaxy clusters due to the hot and dense gas filling the space between galaxies. We report the discovery of a strong connection between severe ram pressure stripping and the presence of AGN activity. Searching in galaxy clusters at low redshift, we have selected the most extreme examples of jellyfish galaxies, which are galaxies with long tentacles of material extending for dozens of kpc beyond the galaxy disk. Using the MUSE spectrograph on the ESO Very Large Telescope, we find that 6 out of the 7 galaxies of this sample host a central AGN, and two of them also have galactic-scale AGN ionization cones. The high incidence of AGN among the most striking jellyfishes may be due to ram pressure causing gas to flow towards the center and triggering the AGN activity, or to an enhancement of the stripping caused by AGN energy injection, or both. Our analysis of the galaxy position and velocity relative to the cluster strongly supports the first hypothesis, and puts forward ram pressure as another, yet unforeseen, possible mechanism for feeding the central supermassive black hole with gas., Comment: published in Nature, Vol.548, Number 7667, pag.304

Within the GAs Stripping Phenomena in galaxies with MUSE (GASP) sample, we identified an ongoing 1:1 merger between two galaxies and the consequent formation of a tidal dwarf galaxy (TDG). The system is observed at z = 0.05043 and is part of a poor group. Exploiting the exquisite quality of the MUSE/VLT data, we present the spatially resolved kinematics and physical properties of gas and stars of this object and describe its evolutionary history. An old (luminosity weighted age ~2x10^9yr), gas poor, early-type-like galaxy is merging with a younger (luminosity weighted age ~2.5x10^8 yr), gas rich, late-type galaxy . The system has a quite strong metallicity gradient, indicative of an early-stage phase. Comparing the spatial extension of the star formation at different epochs, we date the beginning of the merger between ~10^7 yr

GASP (GAs Stripping Phenomena in galaxies with MUSE) is a new integral-field spectroscopic survey with MUSE at the VLT aiming at studying gas removal processes in galaxies. We present an overview of the survey and show a first example of a galaxy undergoing strong gas stripping. GASP is obtaining deep MUSE data for 114 galaxies at z=0.04-0.07 with stellar masses in the range 10^9.2-10^11.5 M_sun in different environments (galaxy clusters and groups, over more than four orders of magnitude in halo mass). GASP targets galaxies with optical signatures of unilateral debris or tails reminiscent of gas stripping processes ("jellyfish galaxies"), as well as a control sample of disk galaxies with no morphological anomalies. GASP is the only existing Integral Field Unit (IFU) survey covering both the main galaxy body and the outskirts and surroundings, where the IFU data can reveal the presence and the origin of the outer gas. To demonstrate GASP's ability to probe the physics of gas and stars, we show the complete analysis of a textbook case of a "jellyfish" galaxy, JO206. This is a massive galaxy (9 x 10^10 M_sun in a low-mass cluster (sigma ~500 km/s), at a small projected clustercentric radius and a high relative velocity, with >=90kpc-long tentacles of ionized gas stripped away by ram pressure. We present the spatially resolved kinematics and physical properties of gas and stars, and depict the evolutionary history of this galaxy., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

We reexamine the systematic properties of local galaxy populations, using published surveys of star formation, structure, and gas content. After recalibrating star formation measures, we are able to reliably measure specific star formation rates well below the "main sequence" of star formation vs mass. We find an unexpectedly large population of galaxies with star formation rates intermediate between vigorously star-forming main sequence galaxies and passive galaxies, and with gas content disproportionately high for their star formation rates. Several lines of evidence suggest that these quiescent galaxies form a distinct population rather than a low star formation tail of the main sequence. We demonstrate that a tight main sequence, evolving with epoch, is a natural outcome of most histories of star formation and has little astrophysical significance, but that the quiescent population requires additional astrophysics to explain its properties. Using a simple model for disk evolution based on the observed dependence of star formation on gas content in local galaxies, and assuming simple histories of cold gas inflow, we show that the evolution of galaxies away from the main sequence can be attributed to the depletion of gas due to star formation after a cutoff in gas inflow. The quiescent population is composed of galaxies in which the density of disk gas has fallen below a threshold for disk stability. The evolution of galaxies beyond the quiescent state to gas exhaustion requires another process, probably wind-driven mass loss. The SSFR distribution of the quiescent and passive implies that the timescale of this process must be greater than a few Gyrs but less than a few tens of Gyrs. Exploiting the data of the Grism Lens-Amplified Survey from Space (GLASS), we characterize the spatial distribution of star formation in 76 high star forming galaxies in 10 clusters at 0.3< z <0.7. All these galaxies are likely restricted to first infall. In a companion paper we contrast the properties of field and cluster galaxies, whereas here we correlate the properties of H{\alpha} emitters to a number of tracers of the cluster environment to investigate its role in driving galaxy transformations. H{\alpha} emitters are found in the clusters out to 0.5 virial radii, the maximum radius covered by GLASS. The peak of the H{\alpha} emission is offset with respect to the peak of the UV-continuum. We decompose this offsets into a radial and tangential component. The radial compo- nent points away from the cluster center in 60% of the cases, with 95% confidence. The decompositions agree with cosmological simulations, i.e. the H{\alpha} emission offset correlates with galaxy velocity and ram-pressure stripping signatures. Trends between H{\alpha} emitter properties and surface mass density distributions and X-ray emissions emerge only for unrelaxed clusters. The lack of strong correlations with the global environment does not allow us to identify a unique environmental effect originating from the cluster center. In contrast, correla- tions between H{\alpha} morphology and local number density emerge. Exploiting the slitless spectroscopy taken as part of the Grism Lens-Amplified Survey from Space (GLASS), we present an extended analysis of the spatial distribution of star formation in 76 galaxies in 10 clusters at 0.3< z <0.7. We use 85 foreground and background galaxies in the same redshift range as a field sample. The samples are well matched in stellar mass (10^8-10^11 M_sun) and star formation rate (0.5-50 M_sun/yr). We visually classify galaxies in terms of broad-band morphology, Halpha morphology and likely physical process acting on the galaxy. Most Halpha emitters have a spiral morphology (41+/-8% in clusters, 51+/-8% in the field), followed by mergers/interactions (28+/-8%, 31+/-7%, respectively) and early-type galaxies (remarkably as high as 29+/-8% in clusters and 15+/-6% in the field). A diversity of Halpha morphologies is detected, suggesting a diversity of physical processes. In clusters, 30+/-8% of the galaxies present a regular morphology, mostly consistent with star formation diffused uniformly across the stellar population (mostly in the disk component, when present). The second most common morphology (28+/-8%) is asymmetric/jellyfish, consistent with ram pressure stripping or other non-gravitational processes in 18+/-8% of the cases. Ram pressure stripping appears significantly less prominent in the field (2+/-2%), where the most common morphology/mechanism appears to be consistent with minor gas rich mergers or clump accretion. This work demonstrates that while environment specific mechanisms affect galaxy evolution at this redshift, they are diverse and their effects subtle. We present coarse but robust star formation histories (SFHs) derived from spectro-photometric data of the Carnegie-Spitzer-IMACS Survey, for 22,494 galaxies at 0.3

Using deep Hubble Frontier Fields imaging and slitless spectroscopy from the Grism Lens-Amplified Survey from Space, we analyze 2200 cluster and 1748 field galaxies at $0.2\leq z\leq0.7$ to determine the impact of environment on galaxy size and structure at $\log M_*/M_\odot>7.8$, an unprecedented limit at these redshifts. Based on simple assumptions-$r_e=f(M_*)$-we find no significant differences in half-light radii ($r_e$) between equal-mass cluster or field systems. More complex analyses-$r_e=f(M_*,U-V,n,z,\Sigma$)-reveal local density $(\Sigma$) to induce only a $7\% \pm 3\%$ ($95\%$ confidence) reduction in $r_e$ beyond what can be accounted for by $U-V$ color, Sersic index ($n$), and redshift ($z$) effects.Almost any size difference between galaxies in high- and low-density regions is thus attributable to their different distributions in properties other than environment. Indeed, we find a clear color-$r_e$ correlation in low-mass passive cluster galaxies ($\log M_*/M_\odot<9.8$) such that bluer systems have larger radii, with the bluest having sizes consistent with equal-mass star-forming galaxies. We take this as evidence that large-$r_e$ low-mass passive cluster galaxies are recently acquired systems that have been environmentally quenched without significant structural transformation (e.g., by ram pressure stripping or starvation).Conversely, $\sim20\%$ of small-$r_e$ low-mass passive cluster galaxies appear to have been in place since $z\sim3$. Given the consistency of the small-$r_e$ galaxies' stellar surface densities (and even colors) with those of systems more than ten times as massive, our findings suggest that clusters mark places where galaxy evolution is accelerated for an ancient base population spanning most masses, with late-time additions quenched by environment-specific mechanisms are mainly restricted to the lowest masses., Comment: The accepted version. In a hierarchical Universe clusters grow via the accretion of galaxies from the field, groups and even other clusters. As this happens, galaxies can lose their gas reservoirs via different mechanisms, eventually quenching their star-formation. We explore the diverse environmental histories of galaxies through a multi-wavelength study of the combined effect of ram-pressure stripping and group "processing" in Abell 963, a massive growing cluster at $z=0.2$ from the Blind Ultra Deep HI Environmental Survey (BUDHIES). We incorporate hundreds of new optical redshifts (giving a total of 566 cluster members), as well as Subaru and XMM-Newton data from LoCuSS, to identify substructures and evaluate galaxy morphology, star-formation activity, and HI content (via HI deficiencies and stacking) out to $3\times R_{200}$. We find that Abell 963 is being fed by at least 7 groups, that contribute to the large number of passive galaxies outside the cluster core. More massive groups have a higher fraction of passive and HI-poor galaxies, while low-mass groups host younger (often interacting) galaxies. For cluster galaxies not associated with groups we corroborate our previous finding that HI gas (if any) is significantly stripped via ram-pressure during their first passage through the intra-cluster medium, and find mild evidence for a starburst associated with this event. In addition, we find an overabundance of morphologically peculiar and/or star-forming galaxies near the cluster core. We speculate that these arise as groups pass through the cluster (post-processing). We present a detailed study of the colours in late-type galaxy discs for ten of the EDisCS galaxy clusters with 0.5 < z < 0.8. Our cluster sample contains 172 spiral galaxies, and our control sample is composed of 96 field disc galaxies. We deconvolve their ground-based V and I images obtained with FORS2 at the VLT with initial spatial resolutions between 0.4 and 0.8 arcsec to achieve a final resolution of 0.1 arcsec with 0.05 arcsec pixels, which is close to the resolution of the ACS at the HST. After removing the central region of each galaxy to avoid pollution by the bulges, we measured the V-I colours of the discs. We find that 50% of cluster spiral galaxies have disc V-I colours redder by more than 1 sigma of the mean colours of their field counterparts. This is well above the 16% expected for a normal distribution centred on the field disc properties. The prominence of galaxies with red discs depends neither on the mass of their parent cluster nor on the distance of the galaxies to the cluster cores. Passive spiral galaxies constitute 20% of our sample. These systems are not abnormally dusty. They are are made of old stars and are located on the cluster red sequences. Another 24% of our sample is composed of galaxies that are still active and star forming, but less so than galaxies with similar morphologies in the field. These galaxies are naturally located in the blue sequence of their parent cluster colour-magnitude diagrams. The reddest of the discs in clusters must have stopped forming stars more than ~5 Gyr ago. Some of them are found among infalling galaxies, suggesting preprocessing. Our results confirm that galaxies are able to continue forming stars for some significant period of time after being accreted into clusters, and suggest that star formation can decline on seemingly long (1 to 5 Gyr) timescales., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A
