Abstract

The use of a cochlear implant in patients who have had their inner ear surgically destroyed (labyrinthectomy) is evaluated. The result of the first such patient to receive an artificial implant in an attempt to provide some level of 'hearing' following a prior destructive surgery is documented. The relative success of this procedure shows that total destruction of the inner ear is not a reason to avoid a cochlear implant. The technique for performing an implant in individuals who have had massive destruction of their bony ear is also discussed.
