Search

In the age of gravitational-wave (GW) sources and newly discovered local black holes (BH) and neutron stars (NS), understanding the fate of stars is a key question. Not every massive star is expected to successfully explode as a supernova and leave behind a NS; some stars form BHs. The remnant depends on explosion physics but also on the final core structure, often summarized by the compactness parameter or iron core mass, where high values have been linked to BH formation. Several groups have reported similar patterns in these parameters as a function of mass, characterized by a prominent compactness peak followed by another peak at higher masses, pointing to a common underlying physical mechanism. Here, we investigate its origin by computing single-star models from 17 to 50 solar masses with MESA. The first and second compactness increases originate from core carbon and neon burning, respectively, becoming neutrino dominated, which enhances the core contraction and ultimately increases the iron-core mass and compactness. An early core neon ignition during carbon burning, and an early silicon ignition during oxygen burning help counter the core contraction and decrease the final iron core mass and compactness. Shell mergers between C/Ne and O-burning shells further decrease the compactness and we show that they are due to an enhanced entropy production in these layers. We find that the final structure of massive stars is not random but already written in their cores at core helium exhaustion. The same mechanisms determine the final structure of any star in this core mass range, including binary products, though binary interactions systematical shift the range of expected BH formation. The majority of massive stars are expected to exchange mass or merge with a companion during their lives. This immediately implies that most supernovae (SNe) are from such post-mass-exchange objects. Here, we explore how mass accretion and merging affect the pre-SN structures of stars and their final fates. We use the stellar evolution code MESA, infer the outcome of core-collapse using a neutrino-driven SN model, and apply a rapid-accretion model. Our models cover initial masses from 11 to 70 Msun and the accreted mass ranges from 10-200% of the initial mass. We find that mass accretion in particular onto post-main-sequence (post-MS) stars can lead to a long-lived blue supergiant (BSG) phase. In comparison to genuine single stars, post-MS accretors have small core-to-total mass ratios, regardless of whether they end their lives as BSGs or cool supergiants (CSGs), and they can have genuinely different pre-SN core structures. As in single and binary-stripped stars, we find black-hole (BH) formation for the same characteristic CO core masses M_CO of ~7 Msun and >13 Msun. In models with the largest mass accretion, the BH-formation landscape as a function of M_CO is shifted by about 0.5 Msun to lower masses. We find a tight relation between our neutron-star (NS) masses and the central entropy of the pre-SN models, suggesting a universal relation that is independent of the evolutionary history of stars. Post-MS accretors explode both as BSGs and CSGs, and we show how to understand their pre-SN locations in the Hertzsprung--Russell diagram. Some BSGs that avoid the luminous-blue-variable (LBV) regime are predicted to collapse into BHs of up to 50 Msun while others explode in supernovae and eject up to 40 Msun, greatly exceeding ejecta masses from single stars. These masses can be even higher at lower metallicities, and they may fall into the pair-instability-supernova mass gap. The common-envelope (CE) phase is a crucial stage in binary star evolution because the orbital separation can shrink drastically while ejecting the envelope of a giant star. Three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic simulations of CE evolution are indispensable to learning about the mechanisms that play a role during the CE phase. While these simulations offer great insight, they are computationally expensive. We propose a one-dimensional (1D) model to simulate the CE phase within the stellar evolution code $\texttt{MESA}$ by using a parametric drag force prescription for dynamical drag and adding the released orbital energy as heat into the envelope. We compute CE events of a $0.97\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$ asymptotic giant-branch star and a point mass companion with mass ratios of 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75, and compare them to 3D simulations of the same setup. The 1D CE model contains two free parameters, which we demonstrate are both needed to fit the spiral-in behavior and the fraction of ejected envelope mass of the 1D method to the 3D simulations. For mass ratios of 0.25 and 0.50, we find good-fitting 1D simulations, while for a mass ratio of 0.75, we do not find a satisfactory fit to the 3D simulation as some of the assumptions in the 1D method are no longer valid. Massive stars can explode in powerful supernovae (SNe) forming neutron stars but they may also collapse directly into black holes (BHs). Understanding and predicting their final fate is increasingly important, e.g, in the context of gravitational-wave astronomy. The interior mixing of stars in general and convective boundary mixing remain some of the largest uncertainties in their evolution. Here, we investigate the influence of convective boundary mixing on the pre-SN structure and explosion properties of massive stars. Using the 1D stellar evolution code Mesa, we model single, non-rotating stars of solar metallicity with initial masses of $5-70\mathrm{M_\odot}$ and convective core step-overshooting of $0.05-0.50H_\mathrm{P}$. Stars are evolved until the onset of iron core collapse, and the pre-SN models are exploded using a parametric, semi-analytic SN code. We use the compactness parameter to describe the interior structure of stars at core collapse. Larger convective core overshooting shifts the location of the compactness peak by $1-2\mathrm{M_\odot}$ to higher $M_\mathrm{CO}$. As the luminosity of the pre-SN progenitor is determined by $M_\mathrm{CO}$, we predict BH formation for progenitors with luminosities $5.35<\log(L/\mathrm{L_\odot})<5.50$ and $\log(L/\mathrm{L_\odot})>5.80$. The luminosity range of BH formation agrees well with the observed luminosity of the red supergiant star N6946BH1 that disappeared without a bright SN and likely collapsed into a BH. While some of our models in the luminosity range $\log(L/\mathrm{L_\odot})=5.1-5.5$ indeed collapse to form BHs, this does not fully explain the lack of observed SN~IIP progenitors at these luminosities, ie the missing red-supergiant problem. This study builds on previous works, producing the most extensive prediction of the properties of such a hypothetical population to date, taking into account both Chandrasekhar and non-Chandrasekhar mass events. These results are then used to define criteria for membership of this population and characterise putative subpopulations This study contains 6x10^6 individual ejection trajectories out of the Galactic plane calculated with the stellar kinematics framework SHyRT, which are analysed with regard to their bulk observational properties. These are then put into context with the only previously identified population member US\,708 and applied to a number of other possible candidate objects. We find that two additional previously observed objects possess properties to warrant a designation as candidate objects. Characterisation of these object with respect to the predicted population finds all of them to be extreme in at least one astrometric observable. We find that current observations support a Galactic SN rate on the order of ~3x10^-7/yr to ~2x10^-6/yr, three orders of magnitude below the inferred Galactic SN Ia rate and two orders of magnitude below the formation rate of predicted He-donor progenitors. The number of currently observed population members suggests that the He-donor scenariois not a dominant contributor to the number of observed SNe Ia. However, we find that, even at the low event rate suggested, the majority of possibly detectable population members is still undetected. Most massive stars are born in binary or higher-order multiple systems and exchange mass with a companion during their lives. In particular, the progenitors of a large fraction of compact object mergers, and Galactic neutron stars (NSs) and black holes (BHs) have been stripped off their envelopes by a binary companion. Here, we study the evolution of single and stripped binary stars up to core collapse with the stellar evolution code MESA and their final fates with a parametric supernova (SN) model. We find that stripped binary stars can have systematically different pre-SN structures compared to genuine single stars and thus also different SN outcomes. The bases of these differences are already established by the end of core helium burning and are preserved up to core collapse. We find a non-monotonic pattern of NS and BH formation as a function of CO core mass that is different in single and stripped binary stars. In terms of initial masses, single stars of >35 Msun all form BHs, while this transition is only at 70 Msun in stripped stars. On average, stripped stars give rise to lower NS and BH masses, higher explosion energies, higher kick velocities and higher nickel yields. Within a simplified population synthesis model, we show that our results lead to a significant reduction of the rates of BH-NS and BH-BH mergers with respect to typical assumptions made on NS and BH formation. Therefore, we predict lower detection rates of such merger events by, e.g., advanced LIGO than is often considered. We further show how features in the NS-BH mass distribution of single and stripped stars relate to the chirp-mass distribution of compact object mergers. Further implications of our findings are discussed with respect to the missing red-supergiant problem, a possible mass gap between NSs and BHs, X-ray binaries and observationally inferred nickel masses from Type Ib/c and IIP Sne. About 10% of stars more massive than ${\approx}\,1.5\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$ have strong, large-scale surface magnetic fields and are being discussed as progenitors of highly-magnetic white dwarfs and magnetars. The origin of these fields remains uncertain. Recent 3D magnetohydrodynamical simulations have shown that strong magnetic fields can be generated in the merger of two massive stars. Here, we follow the long-term evolution of such a 3D merger product in a 1D stellar evolution code. During a thermal relaxation phase after the coalescence, the merger product reaches critical surface rotation, sheds mass and then spins down primarily because of internal mass readjustments. The spin of the merger product after thermal relaxation is mainly set by the co-evolution of the star-torus structure left after coalescence. This evolution is still uncertain, so we also consider magnetic braking and other angular-momentum-gain and -loss mechanisms that may influence the final spin of the merged star. Because of core compression and mixing of carbon and nitrogen in the merger, enhanced nuclear burning drives a transient convective core that greatly contributes to the rejuvenation of the star. Once the merger product relaxed back to the main sequence, it continues its evolution similar to that of a genuine single star of comparable mass. It is a slow rotator that matches the magnetic blue straggler $\tau$ Sco. Farr and Mandel reanalyse our data, finding initial-mass-function slopes for high mass stars in 30 Doradus that agree with our results. However, their reanalysis appears to underpredict the observed number of massive stars. The 30 Doradus star-forming region in the Large Magellanic Cloud is a nearby analogue of large star-formation events in the distant Universe. We determine the recent formation history and the initial mass function (IMF) of massive stars in 30 Doradus based on spectroscopic observations of 247 stars more massive than 15 solar masses ($\mathrm{M}_\odot$). The main episode of massive star formation started about $8\,\mathrm{Myr}$ ago and the star-formation rate seems to have declined in the last $1\,\mathrm{Myr}$. The IMF is densely sampled up to $200\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$ and contains $32\pm12\%$ more stars above $30\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$ than predicted by a standard Salpeter IMF. SN 2002cx-like and SN Ia-CSM objects show similar early spectra and both belong to a young stellar population, suggesting that they could share the same progenitor origin. Adopting the framework of the common-envelope-wind (CEW) model developed in \citet{MENGXC17}, we here propose that both subclasses of SNe Ia are caused by the explosion of hybrid carbon-oxygen-neon white dwarfs (CONe WDs) in single-degenerate systems, where SNe Ia-CSM explode in systems with a massive common envelope (CE) of $\sim1~M_{\odot}$, while SN 2002cx-like events correspond to those events where most of the CE has been lost in a wind. Using binary-population-synthesis (BPS) calculations, we estimate a number ratio of SNe Ia-CSM to SN 2002cx-like objects between $\frac{1}{3}$ and $\frac{2}{3}$, consistent with observational constraints, and an overall contribution from hybrid CONe WDs to the total SN Ia population that also matches the observed number from these peculiar objects. Our model predicts a statistical sequence of CSM density from SN Ia-CSM to SN 2002cx-like events and normal SNe Ia, consistent with existing radio constraints. We also find a new subclass of hybrid SNe which share the properties of Type II and Type Ia SNe, consistent with some observed SNe, which do not have a surviving companion. Gravitational waves were discovered with the detection of binary black hole mergers and they should also be detectable from lower mass neutron star mergers. These are predicted to eject material rich in heavy radioactive isotopes that can power an electromagnetic signal called a kilonova. The gravitational wave source GW170817 arose from a binary neutron star merger in the nearby Universe with a relatively well confined sky position and distance estimate. Here we report observations and physical modelling of a rapidly fading electromagnetic transient in the galaxy NGC4993, which is spatially coincident with GW170817 and a weak short gamma-ray burst. The transient has physical parameters broadly matching the theoretical predictions of blue kilonovae from neutron star mergers. The emitted electromagnetic radiation can be explained with an ejected mass of 0.04 +/- 0.01 Msol, with an opacity of kappa <= 0.5 cm2/gm at a velocity of 0.2 +/- 0.1c. The power source is constrained to have a power law slope of beta = -1.2 +/- 0.3, consistent with radioactive powering from r-process nuclides. We identify line features in the spectra that are consistent with light r-process elements (90 < A < 140). As it fades, the transient rapidly becomes red, and emission may have contribution by a higher opacity, lanthanide-rich ejecta component. Double neutron star (DNS) systems represent extreme physical objects and the endpoint of an exotic journey of stellar evolution and binary interactions. Large numbers of DNS systems and their mergers are anticipated to be discovered using the Square-Kilometre-Array searching for radio pulsars and high-frequency gravitational wave detectors (LIGO/VIRGO), respectively. Here we discuss all key properties of DNS systems, as well as selection effects, and combine the latest observational data with new theoretical progress on various physical processes with the aim of advancing our knowledge on their formation. We examine key interactions of their progenitor systems and evaluate their accretion history during the high-mass X-ray binary stage, the common envelope phase and the subsequent Case BB mass transfer, and argue that the first-formed NSs have accreted at most $\sim 0.02\;M_{\odot}$. We investigate DNS masses, spins and velocities, and in particular correlations between spin period, orbital period and eccentricity. Numerous Monte Carlo simulations of the second supernova (SN) events are performed to extrapolate pre-SN stellar properties and probe the explosions. All known close-orbit DNS systems are consistent with ultra-stripped exploding stars. Although their resulting NS kicks are often small, we demonstrate a large spread in kick magnitudes which may, in general, depend on the past interaction history of the exploding star and thus correlate with the NS mass. We analyze and discuss NS kick directions based on our SN simulations. The single-degenerate (SD) model is one of the principal models for the progenitors of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), but some of the predictions in the most widely studied version of the SD model, i.e. the optically thick wind (OTW) model, have not been confirmed by observations. Here, we propose a new version of the SD model in which a common envelope (CE) is assumed to form when the mass-transfer rate between a carbon-oxygen white dwarf (CO WD) and its companion exceeds a critical accretion rate. The WD may gradually increase its mass at the base of the CE. Due to the large nuclear luminosity for stable hydrogen burning, the CE may expand to giant dimensions and will lose mass from the surface of the CE by a CE wind (CEW). Because of the low CE density, the binary system will avoid a fast spiral-in phase and finally re-emerge from the CE phase. Our model may share the virtues of the OTW model but avoid some of its shortcomings. We performed binary stellar evolution calculations for more than 1100 close WD + MS binaries. Compared with the OTW model, the parameter space for SNe Ia from our CEW model extends to more massive companions and less massive WDs. Correspondingly, the Galactic birth rate from the CEW model is higher than that from the OTW model by $\sim$30\%. The recently detected gravitational wave signals (GW150914 and GW151226) of the merger event of a pair of relatively massive stellar-mass black holes (BHs) calls for an investigation of the formation of such progenitor systems in general. We analyse the common envelope (CE) stage of the "traditional" formation channel in binaries where the first-formed compact object undergoes an in-spiral inside the envelope of its evolved companion star and ejects the envelope in that process. We calculate envelope binding energies of donor stars with initial masses between 4 and 115 Msun for metallicities of Z=Zsun/2 and Z=Zsun/50, and derive minimum masses of in-spiralling objects needed to eject these envelopes. We find that CE evolution, besides from producing WD-WD and NS-NS binaries, may, in principle, also produce massive BH-BH systems with individual BH component masses up to ~50-60 Msun, in particular for donor stars evolved to giants. However, the physics of envelope ejection of massive stars remains uncertain. We discuss the applicability of the energy-budget formalism, the location of the bifurcation point, the recombination energy and the accretion energy during in-spiral as possible energy sources, and also comment on the effect of inflated helium cores. Massive stars in a wide range of metallicities and with initial masses up to at least 115 Msun may possibly shed their envelopes and survive CE evolution, depending on their initial orbital parameters, similarly to the situation for intermediate mass and low-mass stars with degenerate cores. We conclude that based on stellar structure calculations, and in the view of the usual simple energy budget analysis, events like GW150914 and GW151226 could possibly be produced from the CE channel. The energy budget in common-envelope events (CEEs) is not well understood, with substantial uncertainty even over to what extent the recombination energy stored in ionised hydrogen and helium might be used to help envelope ejection. We investigate the reaction of a red-giant envelope to heating which mimics limiting cases of energy input provided by the orbital decay of a binary during a CEE, specifically during the post-plunge-in phase during which the spiral-in has been argued to occur on a time-scale longer than dynamical. We show that the outcome of such a CEE depends less on the total amount of energy by which the envelope is heated than on how rapidly the energy was transferred to the envelope and on where the envelope was heated. The envelope always becomes dynamically unstable before receiving net heat energy equal to the envelope's initial binding energy. We find two types of outcome, both of which likely lead to at least partial envelope ejection: "runaway" solutions in which the expansion of the radius becomes undeniably dynamical, and superficially "self-regulated" solutions, in which the expansion of the stellar radius stops but a significant fraction of the envelope becomes formally dynamically unstable. Almost the entire reservoir of initial helium recombination energy is used for envelope expansion. Hydrogen recombination is less energetically useful, but is nonetheless important for the development of the dynamical instabilities. Recent discoveries of weak and fast optical transients raise the question of their origin. We investigate the minimum ejecta mass associated with core-collapse supernovae (SNe) of Type Ic. We show that mass transfer from a helium star to a compact companion can produce an ultra-stripped core which undergoes iron core collapse and leads to an extremely fast and faint SN Ic. In this Letter, a detailed example is presented in which the pre-SN stellar mass is barely above the Chandrasekhar limit, resulting in the ejection of only ~0.05-0.20 M_sun of material and the formation of a low-mass neutron star. We compute synthetic light curves of this case and demonstrate that SN 2005ek could be explained by our model. We estimate that the fraction of such ultra-stripped to all SNe could be as high as 0.001-0.01. This work aims to present our current best physical understanding of common-envelope evolution (CEE). We highlight areas of consensus and disagreement, and stress ideas which should point the way forward for progress in this important but long-standing and largely unconquered problem. Unusually for CEE-related work, we mostly try to avoid relying on results from population synthesis or observations, in order to avoid potentially being misled by previous misunderstandings. As far as possible we debate all the relevant issues starting from physics alone, all the way from the evolution of the binary system immediately before CEE begins to the processes which might occur just after the ejection of the envelope. In particular, we include extensive discussion about the energy sources and sinks operating in CEE, and hence examine the foundations of the standard energy formalism. Special attention is also given to comparing the results of hydrodynamic simulations from different groups and to discussing the potential effect of initial conditions on the differences in the outcomes. We compare current numerical techniques for the problem of CEE and also whether more appropriate tools could and should be produced (including new formulations of computational hydrodynamics, and attempts to include 3D processes within 1D codes). Finally we explore new ways to link CEE with observations. We present spectroscopic observations of GRB091127 (z=0.490) at the peak of the putative associated supernova, SN2009nz. Subtracting a late-time spectrum of the host galaxy, we isolate the contribution of SN2009nz and uncover broad features typical of nearby GRB-SNe. This establishes unambiguously that GRB091127 was accompanied by a broad-lined Type Ic SN, and links a cosmological long burst with a standard energy release (E_gamma,iso ~ 1.1e52 erg) to a massive star progenitor. The spectrum of SN2009nz closely resembles that of SN2006aj, with SN2003dh also providing an acceptable match, but has significantly narrower features than SNe 1998bw and 2010bh, indicative of a lower expansion velocity. The photospheric velocity inferred from the SiII 6355 absorption feature, v_ph ~ 17,000 km/s, is indeed closer to that of SNe 2006aj and 2003dh than to the other GRB-SNe. Combining the measured velocity with the light curve peak brightness and width, we estimate the following explosion parameters: M_Ni ~ 0.35 M_sun, E_K ~ 2.3e51 erg, and M_ej ~ 1.4 M_sun, similar to those of SN2006aj. These properties indicate that SN2009nz follows a trend of lower M_Ni for GRB-SNe with lower E_K and M_ej. Equally important, since GRB091127 is a typical cosmological burst, the similarity of SN2009nz to SN2006aj either casts doubt on the claim that XRF060218/SN2006aj was powered by a neutron star, or indicates that the nature of the central engine is encoded in the SN properties but not in the prompt emission. Future spectra of GRB-SNe at z > 0.3, including proper subtraction of the host galaxy contribution, will shed light on the full dispersion of SN properties for standard long GRBs, on the relation between SNe associated with sub-energetic and standard GRBs, and on a potential dispersion in the associated SN types., Comment: Submitted to ApJ; 11 pages; 2 tables; 4 figures; emulateapj style

Aims: Recurrent nova systems like RS Oph have been proposed as a possible channel to Type Ia Supernova explosions, based on the high mass of the accreting white dwarf. Additional support to this hypothesis has been recently provided by the detection of circumstellar material around SN2006X and SN2007le, showing a structure compatible with that expected for recurrent nova outbursts.In this paper we investigate the circumstellar environment of RS Oph and its structure, with the aim of establishing a firmer and independent link between this class of objects and Type Ia SN progenitors. Methods: We study the time evolution of CaII, NaI and KI absorption features in RS Oph, before, during, and after the last outburst, using multi-epoch, high-resolution spectroscopy, and applying the same method adopted for SN2006X and SN2007le. Results: A number of components, blue-shifted with respect to the systemic velocity of RS Oph, are detected. In particular, one feature strongly weakens in the first two weeks after the outburst, simultaneously with the disappearance of very narrow P-Cyg profiles overimposed on the much wider nova emission lines of H, He, FeII and other elements. Conclusions: We interpret these facts as the signature of density enhancements in the circumstellar material, suggesting that the recurrent eruptions might indeed create complex structures within the material lost by the donor star. This establishes a strong link between RS Oph and the progenitor system of the Type Ia SN2006X, for which similar features have been detected., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures. We have computed an extensive grid of binary evolution tracks to represent low- and intermediate mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs and IMXBs). The grid includes 42,000 models which covers 60 initial donor masses over the range of 1-4 solar masses and, for each of these, 700 initial orbital periods over the range of 10-250 hours. These results can be applied to understanding LMXBs and IMXBs: those that evolve analogously to CVs; that form ultracompact binaries with orbital periods in the range of 6-50 minutes; and that lead to wide orbits with giant donors. We also investigate the relic binary recycled radio pulsars into which these systems evolve. To evolve the donor stars in this study, we utilized a newly developed stellar evolution code called "MESA" that was designed, among other things, to be able to handle very low-mass and degenerate donors. This first application of the results is aimed at an understanding of the newly discovered pulsar PSR J1614-2230 which has a 1.97 solar masses neutron star, orbital period = 8.7 days, and a companion star of 0.5 solar mass. We show that (i) this system is a cousin to the LMXB Cyg X-2; (ii) for neutron stars of canonical birth mass 1.4 solar masses, the initial donor stars which produce the closest relatives to PSR J1614-2230 have a mass between 3.4-3.8 solar masses; (iii) neutron stars as massive as 1.97 solar masses are not easy to produce in spite of the initially high mass of the donor star, unless they were already born as relatively massive neutron stars; (iv) to successfully produce a system like PSR J1614-2230 requires a minimum initial neutron star mass of at least 1.6+-0.1 solar masses, as well as initial donor masses and orbital period of ~ 4.25+-0.10 solar masses and ~49+-2 hrs, respectively; and (v) the current companion star is largely composed of CO, but should have a surface H abundance of ~10-15%., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, simulateapj style, accepted by ApJ

The origin of hot subdwarf B stars (sdBs) is still unclear. About half of the known sdBs are in close binary systems for which common envelope ejection is the most likely formation channel. Little is known about this dynamic phase of binary evolution. Due to the tidal influence of the companion in close binary systems, the rotation of the primary becomes synchronised to its orbital motion. In this case it is possible to constrain the mass of the companion, if the primary mass, its projected rotational velocity as well as its surface gravity are known. For the first time we measured the projected rotational velocities of a large sdB binary sample from high resolution spectra. We analysed a sample of 51 sdB stars in close binaries, 40 of which have known orbital parameters comprising half of all such systems known today. Synchronisation in sdB binaries is discussed both from the theoretical and the observational point of view. The masses and the nature of the unseen companions could be constrained in 31 cases. The companions to seven sdBs could be clearly identified as late M stars. One binary may have a brown dwarf companion. The unseen companions of nine sdBs are white dwarfs with typical masses. The mass of one white dwarf companion is very low. In eight cases the companion mass exceeds 0.9 solar masses, four of which even exceed the Chandrasekhar limit indicating that they may be neutron stars. Even stellar mass black holes are possible for the most massive companions. The distribution of the inclinations of the systems with low mass companions appears to be consistent with expectations, whereas a lack of high inclinations becomes obvious for the massive systems. Most stars are members of binaries, and the evolution of a star in a close binary system differs from that of an ioslated star due to the proximity of its companion star. The components in a binary system interact in many ways and binary evolution leads to the formation of many peculiar stars, including blue stragglers and hot subdwarfs. We will discuss binary evolution and the formation of blue stragglers and hot subdwarfs, and show that those hot objects are important in the study of evolutionary population synthesis (EPS), and conclude that binary interactions should be included in the study of EPS. Indeed, binary interactions make a stellar population younger (hotter), and the far-ultraviolet (UV) excess in elliptical galaxies is shown to be most likely resulted from binary interactions. This has major implications for understanding the evolution of the far-UV excess and elliptical galaxies in general. In particular, it implies that the far-UV excess is not a sign of age, as had been postulated prviously and predicts that it should not be strongly dependent on the metallicity of the population, but exists universally from dwarf ellipticals to giant ellipticals., Comment: Oral talk on IAUS 262, Brazil

It is widely believed that Type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) originate in binary systems where a white dwarf accretes material from a companion star until its mass approaches the Chandrasekhar mass and carbon is ignited in the white dwarf's core. This scenario predicts that the donor star should survive the supernova explosion, providing an opportunity to understand the progenitors of Type Ia supernovae.In this paper we argue that rotation is a generic signature expected of most non-giant donor stars that is easily measurable. \citep{2004Natur.431.1069R} examined stars in the center of the remnant of SN 1572 (Tycho's SN) and showed evidence that a subgiant star (Star G by their naming convention) near the remnant's centre was the system's donor star. We present high-resolution (R \simeq 40000) spectra taken with the High Dispersion Spectrograph on Subaru of this candidate donor star and measure the star's radial velocity as $79\pm 2$ \kms with respect to the LSR and put an upper limit on the star's rotation of 7.5 \kms. In addition, by comparing images that were taken in 1970 and 2004, we measure the proper motion of Star G to be $\mu_l = -1.6 \pm 2.1$ \masyr and $\mu_b = -2.7 \pm 1.6$ \masyr. We demonstrate that all of the measured properties of Star G presented in this paper are consistent with those of a star in the direction of Tycho's SN that is not associated with the supernova event. However, we discuss an unlikely, but still viable scenario for Star G to be the donor star, and suggest further observations that might be able to confirm or refute it., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We show how the recent discovery of a likely close white dwarf companion to the well known star Regulus, one of the brightest stars in the sky, leads to considerable insight into the prior evolutionary history of this star, including the cause of its current rapid rotation. We infer a relatively narrow range for the initial masses of the progenitor system: M_{10} = 2.3 +/- 0.2 M_sun and M_{20} = 1.7 +/- 0.2 M_sun, where M_{10} and M_{20} are the initial masses of the progenitors of the white dwarf and Regulus, respectively. In this scenario, the age of the Regulus system would exceed 1 Gyr. We also show that Regulus, with a current orbital period of 40 days, has an interesting future ahead of it. This includes (i) a common envelope phase, and, quite possibly, (ii) an sdB phase, followed by (iii) an AM CVn phase with orbital periods < 1 hr. Binary evolution calculations are presented in support of this scenario. We also discuss alternative possibilities, emphasizing the present uncertainties in binary evolution theory. In this talk, we present the general principles of binary evolution and give two examples. The first example is the formation of subdwarf B stars (sdBs) and their application to the long-standing problem of ultraviolet excess (also known as UV-upturn) in elliptical galaxies. The second is for the progenitors of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). We discuss the main binary interactions, i.e., stable Roche lobe overflow (RLOF) and common envelope (CE) evolution, and show evolutionary channels leading to the formation of various binary-related objects. In the first example, we show that the binary model of sdB stars of Han et al. (2002, 2003) can reproduce field sdB stars and their counterparts, extreme horizontal branch (EHB) stars, in globular clusters. By applying the binary model to the study of evolutionary population synthesis, we have obtained an ``a priori'' model for the UV-upturn of elliptical galaxies and showed that the UV-upturn is most likely resulted from binary interactions. This has major implications for understanding the evolution of the UV excess and elliptical galaxies in general. In the second example, we introduce the single degenerate channel and the double degenerate channel for the progenitors of SNe Ia. The collapsar model requires rapidly rotating Wolf-Rayet stars as progenitors of long gamma-ray bursts. However, Galactic Wolf-Rayet stars rapidly lose angular momentum due to their intense stellar winds. We investigate whether the tidal interaction of a Wolf-Rayet star with a compact object in a binary system can spin up the Wolf-Rayet star enough to produce a collapsar. We compute the evolution of close Wolf-Rayet binaries, including tidal angular momentum exchange, differential rotation of the Wolf-Rayet star, internal magnetic fields, stellar wind mass loss, and mass transfer. The Wolf-Rayet companion is approximated as a point mass. We then employ a population synthesis code to infer the occurrence rates of the various relevant binary evolution channels. We find that the simple scenario -- i.e., the Wolf-Rayet star being tidally spun up and producing a collapsar -- does not occur at solar metallicity and may only occur with low probability at low metallicity. It is limited by the widening of the binary orbit induced by the strong Wolf-Rayet wind or by the radius evolution of the Wolf-Rayet star that most often leads to a binary merger. The tidal effects enhance the merger rate of Wolf-Rayet stars with black holes such that it becomes comparable to the occurrence rate of long gamma-ray bursts., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We investigate the evolution of the properties of model populations of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) consisting of a black-hole accretor in a binary with a donor star. We have computed models corresponding to three different populations of black-hole binaries; two invoke stellar-mass (~10 Msun) black hole accretors, and the third utilizes intermediate-mass (~1000 Msun) black holes (IMBHs). For each of the three populations, we computed 30,000 binary evolution sequences using a full Henyey stellar evolution code. The optical flux from the model ULXs includes contributions from the accretion disk, due to x-ray irradiation as well as intrinsic viscous heating, and that due to the donor star. We present "probability images" for the ULX systems in planes of color-magnitude, orbital period vs. X-ray luminosity, and luminosity vs. evolution time. Estimates of the numbers of ULXs in a typical galaxy as functions of time and of X-ray luminosity are also presented. Our model CMDs are compared with six ULX counterparts that have been discussed in the literature. Overall, the observed systems seem more closely related to model systems with very high-mass donors (> ~25 Msun) in binaries with IMBH accretors. The nature of the companion stars in Type Ia Supernova (SNe) progenitor systems remains unclear. One possible way to discriminate between different scenarios is the presence (or absence) of circumstellar material, the left overs from the progenitor evolution that may be revealed by their interaction with the SN. A new method to probe the circumstellar environment has been exploited for the normal Type Ia SN 2006X, leading for the first time to the direct detection of material which escaped the progenitor system. In this paper we apply the same analysis to the peculiar Type Ia SN 2000cx, with the aim of constraining the properties of its progenitor system. Using multi-epoch, high-resolution spectroscopy we have studied the spectral region where narrow, time-variable NaID absorption features are expected in case circumstellar material is present along the line of sight. No NaID absorption is detected in the rest-frame of the host galaxy to a level of a few mA, setting a stringent upper limit to the column density of the absorbing material (N(NaI)<=2 x 10^10 cm-2). In this respect the peculiar Type Ia SN 2000cx is different from the normal Ia SN 2006X. Whether this is to be attributed to a different progenitor system, to viewing-angle effects or to a low metallicity remains to be clarified., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. Type Ia supernovae are thought to be thermonuclear explosions of accreting white dwarfs that reach a critical mass limit. Despite their importance as cosmological distance indicators, the nature of their progenitors has remained controversial. Here we report the detection of circumstellar material in a normal Type Ia supernova. The expansion velocities, densities and dimensions of the circumstellar envelope indicate that this material was ejected from the progenitor system. The relatively low expansion velocities appear to favor a progenitor system where a white dwarf accretes material from a companion star which is in the red-giant phase at the time of explosion., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures. The discovery of a flux excess in the far-ultraviolet (UV) spectrum of elliptical galaxies was a major surprise in 1969. While it is now clear that this UV excess is caused by an old population of hot helium-burning stars without large hydrogen-rich envelopes, rather than young stars, their origin has remained a mystery. Here we show that these stars most likely lost their envelopes because of binary interactions, similar to the hot subdwarf population in our own Galaxy. We have developed an evolutionary population synthesis model for the far-UV excess of elliptical galaxies based on the binary model developed by Han et al (2002, 2003) for the formation of hot subdwarfs in our Galaxy. Despite its simplicity, it successfully reproduces most of the properties of elliptical galaxies with a UV excess: the range of observed UV excesses, both in $(1550-V)$ and $(2000-V)$, and their evolution with redshift. We also present colour-colour diagrams for use as diagnostic tools in the study of elliptical galaxies. The model has major implications for understanding the evolution of the UV excess and of elliptical galaxies in general. The discovery of an excess of light in the far-ultraviolet (UV) in 1969 in elliptical galaxies was a major surprise. Supernova 1987A, the first naked-eye supernova observed since Kepler's supernova in 1604, defies a number of theoretical expectations. Its anomalies have long been attributed to a merger between two massive stars that occurred some 20,000 years before the explosion, but so far there has been no conclusive proof that this merger took place. Here, we present three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of the mass ejection associated with such a merger and the subsequent evolution of the ejecta, and we show that this accurately reproduces the properties of the triple-ring nebula surrounding the supernova., Comment: 16 pages (including 7 pages of supplementary material), 2 figures (reduced in size), appeared in Science on 23rd February 2007. The redshift distribution of the short-duration GRBs is a crucial, but currently fragmentary, clue to the nature of their progenitors. Here we present optical observations of nine short GRBs obtained with Gemini, Magellan, and the Hubble Space Telescope. We detect the afterglows and host galaxies of two short bursts, and host galaxies for two additional bursts with known optical afterglow positions, and five with X-ray positions (<6'' radius). In eight of the nine cases we find that the most probable host galaxies are faint, R~23-26.5 mag, and are therefore starkly different from the first few short GRB hosts with R~17-22 mag and z<0.5. Indeed, we measure spectroscopic redshifts of z~0.4-1.1 for the four brightest hosts. A comparison to large field galaxy samples, as well as the hosts of long GRBs and previous short GRBs, indicates that the fainter hosts likely reside at z>1. Our most conservative limit is that at least half of the five hosts without a known redshift reside at z>0.7 (97% confidence level), suggesting that about 1/3-2/3 of all short GRBs originate at higher redshifts than previously determined. We present the results of a systematic exploration of an alternative evolutionary scenario to form double neutron-star binaries, first proposed by Brown (1995), which does not involve a neutron star passing through a common envelope. In this scenario, the initial binary components have very similar masses, and both components have left the main sequence before they evolve into contact; preferably the primary has already developed a CO core. We have performed population synthesis simulations to study the formation of double neutron star binaries via this channel and to predict the orbital properties and system velocities of such systems. We obtain a merger rate for DNSs in this channel in the range of 0.1 - 12/Myr. These rates are still subject to substantial uncertainties such as the modelling of the contact phase., Comment: MNRAS, accepted

We re-assess the question of a systematic time delay between the formation of the progenitor and its explosion in a type Ia supernova (SN Ia) using the Hubble Higher-z Supernova Search sample (Strolger et al. 2004). While the previous analysis indicated a significant time delay, with a most likely value of 3.4 Gyr, effectively ruling out all previously proposed progenitor models, our analysis shows that the time-delay estimate is dominated by systematic errors, in particular due to uncertainties in the star-formation history. We find that none of the popular progenitor models under consideration can be ruled out with any significant degree of confidence. The inferred time delay is mainly determined by the peak in the assumed star-formation history. We show that, even with a much larger Supernova sample, the time delay distribution cannot be reliably reconstructed without better constraints on the star-formation history., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

Thanks to a stellar evolution code able to compute through the C-flash we link the binary population synthesis of single degenerate progenitors of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) to their physical condition at the time of ignition. We show that there is a large range of possible ignition densities and we detail how their probability distribution depends on the accretion properties. The low density peak of this distribution qualitatively reminds of the clustering of the luminosities of Branch-normal SNe Ia. We tighten the possible range of initial physical conditions for explosion models: they form a one-parameter family, independent of the metallicity. We discuss how these results may be modified if we were to relax our hypothesis of a permanent Hachisu wind or if we were to include electron captures., Comment: 10 pages, 14 figures, MNRAS accepted

We examine the proposal that the subset of neutron-star and black-hole X-ray binaries that form with Ap or Bp star companions will experience systemic angular-momentum losses due to magnetic braking, not otherwise operative with intermediate-mass companion stars. We suggest that for donor stars possessing the anomalously high magnetic fields associated with Ap and Bp stars, a magnetically coupled, irradiation-driven stellar wind can lead to substantial systemic loss of angular-momentum. In this paper we apply this mechanism to a specific astrophysics problem involving the formation of compact black-hole binaries with low-mass donor stars. At present, it is not understood how these systems form, given that low-mass companion stars are not likely to provide sufficient gravitational potential to unbind the envelope of the massive progenitor of the black hole during a prior `common-envelope' phase. However, in the absence of magnetic braking, such systems tend to evolve to long orbital periods. We show that, with the proposed magnetic braking properties afforded by Ap and Bp companions, such a scenario can lead to the formation of compact black-hole binaries with orbital periods, donor masses, lifetimes, and production rates that are in accord with the observations. In spite of these successes, our models reveal a significant discrepancy between the calculated effective temperatures and the observed spectral types of the donor stars. Finally, we show that this temperature discrepancy would still exist for other scenarios invoking initially intermediate-mass donor stars, and this presents a substantial unresolved mystery., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS. 10 pages with 5 figures (one reduced-quality to minimise file size)

We have computed models for ultraluminous X-ray sources ("ULXs") consisting of a black-hole accretor of intermediate mass ("IMBH"; e.g., ~1000 Msun) and a captured donor star. For each of four different sets of initial donor masses and orbital separations, we computed 30,000 binary evolution models using a full Henyey stellar evolution code. To our knowledge this is the first time that a population of X-ray binaries this large has been carried out with other than approximation methods, and it serves to demonstrate the feasibility of this approach to large-scale population studies of mass-transfer binaries. In the present study, we find that in order to have a plausible efficiency for producing active ULX systems with IMBHs having luminosities > 10^{40} ergs/sec, there are two basic requirements for the capture of companion/donor stars. First, the donor stars should be massive, i.e., > 8 Msun. Second, the initial orbital separations, after circularization, should be close, i.e., < 6-30 times the radius of the donor star when on the main sequence. Even under these optimistic conditions, we show that the production rate of IMBH-ULX systems may fall short of the observed values by factors of 10-100., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, submitted to ApJ

We present near-IR imaging of a sample of the faint, hard X-ray sources discovered in the 2001 Chandra ACIS-I survey towards the Galactic Centre (GC) (Wang et al. 2002). These ~800 discrete sources represent an important and previously undetected population within the Galaxy. From our VLT observations of 77 X-ray sources, we identify candidate K-band counterparts to 75% of the Chandra sources in our sample. Double neutron stars (DNSs), binary systems consisting of a radio pulsar and a generally undetected second neutron star (NS), have proven to be excellent laboratories for testing the theory of general relativity. The seven systems discovered in our Galaxy exhibit a remarkably well-defined relation between the pulsar spin period and the orbital eccentricity. Here we show, using a simple model where the pulsar is spun up by mass transfer from a helium-star companion, that this relation can only be produced if the second neutron star received a kick that is substantially smaller (with a velocity dispersion of less than 50 km/s) than the standard kick received by a single radio pulsar. This demonstrates that the kick mechanism depends on the evolutionary history of the NS progenitor and that the orbital parameters of DNSs are completely determined by the evolution in the preceding helium star - neutron star phase. This has important implications for estimating the rates of NS-NS mergers, one of the major potential astrophysical sources for the direct detection of gravitational waves, and for short-period gamma-ray bursts., Comment: 5 pages, MNRAS Letters, accepted

The double pulsar J0737--3039 has become an important astrophysical laboratory for testing fundamental physics. Here we demonstrate that the low measured mass of Pulsar B can be used to constrain the equation of state of neutron star matter {\em under the assumption} that it formed in an electron-capture supernova. We show that the observed orbital parameters as well as the likely evolutionary history of the system support such a hypothesis and discuss future refinements that will improve the constraints this test may provide., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, to be published in MNRAS

Evidence of high-velocity features such as those seen in the near-maximum spectra of some Type Ia Supernovae (eg SN 2000cx) has been searched for in the available SNIa spectra observed earlier than one week before B maximum. Recent observational efforts have doubled the number of SNeIa with very early spectra. Remarkably, all SNeIa with early data (7 in our RTN sample and 10 from other programmes) show signs of such features, to a greater or lesser degree, in CaII IR, and some also in SiII 6255A line. High-velocity features may be interpreted as abundance or density enhancements. Abundance enhancements would imply an outer region dominated by Si and Ca. Density enhancements may result from the sweeping up of circumstellar material by the highest velocity SN ejecta. In this scenario, the high incidence of HVFs suggests that a thick disc and/or a high-density companion wind surrounds the exploding white dwarf, as may be the case in Single Degenerate systems. Large-scale angular fluctuations in the radial density and abundance distribution may also be responsible: this could originate in the explosion, and would suggest a deflagration as the more likely explosion mechanism. CSM-interaction and surface fluctuations may coexist, possibly leaving different signatures on the spectrum. We investigate the mass loss from a rotationally distorted envelope following the early, rapid in-spiral of a companion star inside a common envelope. For initially wide, massive binaries (M_1+M_2=20M_{\odot}, P\sim 10 yr), the primary has a convective envelope at the onset of mass transfer and is able to store much of the available orbital angular momentum in its expanded envelope. Three-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics calculations show that mass loss is enhanced at mid-latitudes due to shock reflection from a torus-shaped outer envelope. Mass ejection in the equatorial plane is completely suppressed if the shock wave is too weak to penetrate the outer envelope in the equatorial direction (typically when the energy deposited in the star is less than about one-third of the binding energy of the envelope). We present a parameter study to show how the geometry of the ejecta depends on the angular momentum and the energy deposited in the envelope during a merging event. Applications to the nearly axisymmetric, but very non-spherical nebulae around SN1987A and Sheridan 25 are discussed, as well as possible links to RY Scuti and the Small Magellanic Cloud object R4., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. We present results from the first near-IR imaging of the weak X-ray sources discovered in the Chandra/ACIS-I survey (Wang et al. 2002) towards the Galactic Centre (GC). These ~800 discrete sources, which contribute significantly to the GC X-ray emission, represent an important and previously unknown population within the Galaxy. From our VLT observations we will identify likely IR counterparts to a sample of the hardest sources, which are most likely X-ray binaries. We derive a new formalism for convective motions involving two radial flows. This formalism provides a framework for convective models that guarantees consistency for the chemistry and the energy budget in the flows, allows time-dependence and accounts for the interaction of the convective motions with the global contraction or expansion of the star. In the one-stream limit the formalism reproduces several existing convective models and allows them to treat the chemistry in the flows. We suggest a version of the formalism that can be implemented easily in a stellar evolution code. We then apply the formalism to convective Urca cores in Chandrasekhar mass white dwarfs and compare it to previous studies. We demonstrate that, in degenerate matter, nuclear reactions that change the number of electrons strongly influence the convective velocities and we show that the net energy budget is sensitive to the mixing. We illustrate our model by computing stationary convective cores with Urca nuclei. Even a very small mass fraction of Urca nuclei (as little as $10^{-8}$) strongly influences the convective velocities. One possible fate of an accreting white dwarf is explosion in a type Ia supernova. However, the route to the thermonuclear runaway has always been uncertain owing to the lack of a convective model consistent with the Urca process. We derive a formalism for convective motions involving two radial flows. This formalism provides a framework for convective models that guarantees self-consistency for chemistry and energy budget, allows time-dependence and describes the interaction of convective motions with the global contraction or expansion of the star. A critical comparison of estimates for the rates of hypernovae (HNe) and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is presented. Within the substantial uncertainties, the estimates are shown to be quite comparable and give a Galactic rate of $10^{-6}$ -- $10^{-5} $yr$^{-1}$ for both events. These rates are several orders of magnitude lower than the rate of core-collapse supernovae, suggesting that the evolution leading to a HN/GRB requires special circumstances, very likely due to binary interactions. Various possible binary channels are discussed, and it is shown that these are generally compatible with the inferred rates., Comment: Accepted by Astrophysical Journal Letters. 12 pages

The massive star which underwent core-collapse to produce SN1993J was identified as a non-variable red supergiant star in images of the galaxy M81 taken before explosion. However the stellar source showed an excess in UV and B-band colours that suggested it had either a hot, massive companion star or was embedded in an unresolved young stellar association. The spectra of SN1993J underwent a remarkable transformation between a hydrogen-rich Type II supernova and a helium-rich (hydrogen-deficient) Type Ib. The spectral and photometric peculiarities were explained by models in which the 13-20 solar mass supergiant had lost almost its entire hydrogen envelope to a close binary companion. The binary scenario is currently the best fitting model for the production of such type IIb supernovae, however the hypothetical massive companion stars have so far eluded discovery. Here we report the results of new photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN1993J, 10 years after explosion. At the position of the fading SN we detect the unambiguous signature of a massive star, the binary companion to the progenitor. This is evidence that this type of SN originate in interacting binary systems., Comment: 18 pages (3 figures)
