Josephson Traveling Wave Parametric Amplifiers (J-TWPAs) are promising platforms for realizing broadband quantum-limited amplification of microwave signals. However, substantial gain in such systems is attainable only when strict constraints on phase matching of the signal, idler and pump waves are satisfied -- this is rendered particularly challenging in the presence of nonlinear effects, such as self- and cross-phase modulation, which scale with the intensity of propagating signals. In this work, we present a simple J-TWPA design based on `left-handed' (negative-index) nonlinear Josephson metamaterial, which has phase matching native to its design precluding the need for any complicated circuit or dispersion engineering. The resultant efficiency of four-wave mixing process can implement gains in excess of 20 dB over few GHz bandwidths with much shorter lines than previous implementations. Furthermore, the autonomous nature of phase matching considerably simplifies the J-TWPA design than previous implementations based on `right-handed' (positive index) Josephson metamaterials, making the proposed architecture particularly appealing from a fabrication perspective. The left-handed JTL introduced here constitutes a new modality in distributed Josephson circuits, and forms a crucial piece of the unified framework that can be used to inform the optimal design and operation of broadband microwave amplifiers., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

Molecular beam epitaxy allows for the monolithic integration of wavelength-flexible epitaxial infrared plasmonic materials with quantum-engineered infrared optoelectronic active regions. We experimentally demonstrate a six-fold enhancement in photoluminescence from ultra-thin (total thickness of 1/32-th wavelength) long wavelength infrared (LWIR) superlattices grown on highly doped semiconductor designer metal virtual substrates when compared to the same superlattice grown on an undoped virtual substrate. Analytical and numerical models of the emission process via a Dyadic Greens function formalism are in agreement with experimental results and relate the observed enhancement of emission to a combination of Purcell enhancement due to surface plasmon modes as well as directionality enhancement due to cavity-substrate-emitter interaction. The results presented provide a potential path towards efficient, ultra-subwavelength LWIR emitter devices, as well as a monolithic epitaxial architecture offering the opportunity to investigate the ultimate limits of light-matter interaction in coupled plasmonic/optoelectronic materials.

Nonlinear processes are at the core of many optical technologies including lasers, information processing, sensing, and security, and require optimised materials suitable for nanoscale integration. Here we demonstrate the emergence of a strong bulk second-order nonlinear response in a composite plasmonic nanorod material comprised of centrosymmetric materials. The metamaterial provides equally strong generation of the p-polarized second harmonic light in response to both s- and p-polarized excitation. We develop an effective-medium description of the underlying physics, compare its predictions to the experimental results and analyze the limits of its applicability. We show that while the effective medium theory adequately describes the nonlinear polarization, the process of emission of second harmonic light cannot be described in the same framework. The work provides an understanding of the emergent nonlinear optical response in composites and opens a doorway to new nonlinear optical platform designs for integrated nonlinear photonics.

We have observed laser-like emission of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) decoupled to the glass prism in an attenuated total reflection setup. SPPs were excited by optically pumped molecules in a polymeric film deposited on the top of the silver film. Stimulated emission was characterized by a distinct threshold in the input-output dependence and narrowing of the emission spectrum. The observed stimulated emission and corresponding to it compensation of the metallic absorption loss by gain enables many applications of metamaterials and nanoplasmonic devices., Comment: 8 pages; 3 figures

We report the suppression of loss of surface plasmon polariton propagating at the interface between silver film and optically pumped polymer with dye. Large magnitude of the effect enables a variety of applications of "active" nanoplasmonics. The experimental study is accompanied by the development of the analytical description of the phenomenon and the solution of the controversy regarding the direction of the wavevector of a wave with a strong evanescent component in an active medium., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures
