Continuing our initiative on advancing the calculations of planetesimal accretion in the core-accretion model, we present here the results of our recent study of the contributions of planetesimals around and beyond the orbit of Saturn. In our first two papers [ApJ, 899:45; 941:117], where our focus was on the effects of the Sun and Saturn, the initial distribution of planetesimals was limited to the regions around the accretion zone of a growing Jupiter. In this paper, we expanded that distribution to regions beyond the accretion zone of Saturn. We integrated the orbits of a large ensemble of planetesimals and studied the rate of their capture by the growing proto-Jupiter. In order to be consistent with our previous studies, we did not consider the effect of the nebular gas. Results demonstrated that the exterior planetesimals, especially those beyond 8 AU, have only slight contributions to the growth and metallicity of the growing Jupiter. The final mass and composition of this planet is mainly due to the planetesimals inside and around its accretion zone. Our study shows that although the rate of capture varies slightly by the size and composition of planetesimals, in general, the final results are independent of the size and material of these bodies. Results also pointed to a new finding: the rate of accretion follows the same trend as that of the evolution of Jupiter's envelope, with the largest accretion occurring during the envelope's collapse. As part of our ongoing initiative on accurately calculating the accretion rate of planetesimals in the core-accretion model, we demonstrated in a recent article that when the calculations include the gravitational force of the Sun (the original core-accretion model did not include solar gravity), results change considerably [ApJ, 899:45]. In this paper, we have advanced our previous study by including the effect of Saturn. To maintain focus on the effect of this planet, and in order to be consistent with previous studies, we did not include the effect of the nebular gas. Results demonstrated that as expected, Saturn's perturbation decreases the rate of accretion by scattering many planetesimals out of Jupiter's accretion zone. It also increases the velocities with which planetesimals encounter the envelope, which in agreement with our previous findings, enhances their break-up due to the ram-pressure. Results also show that, because the effect of Saturn in scattering of planetesimals increases with its mass, this planet might not have played a significant role in the accretion of planetesimals by proto-Jupiter during the early stage of its growth. Finally, the late accretion of planetesimals, as obtained in our previous study, appears in our new results as well, implying that combined with the rapid in-fall of the gas, it can result in the mixing of material in the outer regions of the envelope which may explain the enhancement of the envelope's high-Z material., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present results of a detailed study of the rate of the accretion of planetesimals by a growing proto-Jupiter in the core-accretion model. Using a newly developed code, we accurately combine a detailed three-body trajectory calculation with gas drag experienced during the passage of planetesimals in the protoplanet's envelope. We find that the motion of planetesimals is excited to the extent that encounters with the proto-planetary envelope become so fast that ram pressure breaks up the planetesimals in most encounters. As a result, the accretion rate is largely independent of the planetesimal size and composition. For the case we explored of a planet forming at 5.2 AU from the Sun in a disk with a solid surface density of 6 g/cm^2 (Lozovsky et al. 2017) the accretion rate we compute differs in several respects from that assumed by those authors. We find that only 4-5 M_Earth is accreted in the first 1.5x10^6 years before the onset of rapid gas accretion. Most of the mass, some 10 M_Earth, is accreted simultaneously with this rapid gas accretion. In addition, we find that the mass accretion rate remains small, but non-zero for at least a million years after this point, and an additional 0.3-0.4 M_Earth is accreted during that time. This late accretion, together with a rapid infall of gas could lead to the accreted material being mixed throughout the outer regions, and may account for the enhancement of high-Z material in Jupiter's envelope., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Scientific model building can be a time intensive and painstaking process, often involving the development of large and complex computer programs. Despite the effort involved, scientific models cannot easily be distributed and shared with other scientists. In general, implemented scientific models are complex, idiosyncratic, and difficult for anyone but the original scientist/programmer to understand. We believe that advanced software techniques can facilitate both the model building and model sharing process. We propose to construct a scientific modeling software tool that serves as an aid to the scientist in developing and using models. The proposed tool will include an interactive intelligent graphical interface and a high level, domain specific, modeling language. As a testbed for this research, we propose development of a software prototype in the domain of planetary atmospheric modeling.

A prototype is described that can serve as a scientific-modeling software tool to facilitate the development of useful scientific models. The prototype is developed for applications to planetary modeling, and specific examples are given that relate to the atmosphere of Titan. The scientific modeling tool employs a high-level domain-specific modeling language, several data-display facilities, and a library of experimental datasets and scientific equations. The planetary modeling prototype links uncomputed physical variables to computed variables with computational transformations based on a backchaining procedure. The system - implemented in LISP with an object-oriented knowledge-representation tool - is run on a workstation that provides interface with several models. The prototype is expected to form the basis for a sophisticated modeling tool that can permit active experimentation.
