Abstract: Recent experiments on the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak aim at improving the physics base for ITER and DEMO to aid the machine design and prepare efficient operation. Type I edge localized mode (ELM) mitigation using resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) has been shown at low pedestal collisionality ( ν ∗ ped < 0 . 4 ) . In contrast to the previous high ν ∗ regime, suppression only occurs in a narrow RMP spectral window, indicating a resonant process, and a concomitant confinement drop is observed due to a reduction of pedestal top density and electron temperature. Strong evidence is found for the ion heat flux to be the decisive element for the L–H power threshold. A physics based scaling of the density at which the minimum P LH occurs indicates that ITER could take advantage of it to initiate H-mode at lower density than that of the final Q = 10 operational point. Core density fluctuation measurements resolved in radius and wave number show that an increase of R/L T e introduced by off-axis electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) mainly increases the large scale fluctuations. The radial variation of the fluctuation level is in agreement with simulations using the GENE code. Fast particles are shown to undergo classical slowing down in the absence of large scale magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) events and for low heating power, but show signs of anomalous radial redistribution at large heating power, consistent with a broadened off-axis neutral beam current drive current profile under these conditions. Neoclassical tearing mode (NTM) suppression experiments using electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) with feedback controlled deposition have allowed to test several control strategies for ITER, including automated control of (3,2) and (2,1) NTMs during a single discharge. Disruption mitigation studies using massive gas injection (MGI) can show an increased fuelling efficiency with high field side injection, but a saturation of the fuelling efficiency is observed at high injected mass as needed for runaway electron suppression. Large locked modes can significantly decrease the fuelling efficiency and increase the asymmetry of radiated power during MGI mitigation. Concerning power exhaust, the partially detached ITER divertor scenario has been demonstrated at P sep /R = 10 MW m − 1 in ASDEX Upgrade, with a peak time averaged target load around 5MWm − 2 , well consistent with the component limits for ITER. Developing this towards DEMO, full detachment was achieved at P sep /R = 7MWm − 1 and stationary discharges with core radiation fraction of the order of DEMO requirements (70% instead of the 30% needed for ITER) were demonstrated. Finally, it remains difficult to establish the standard ITER Q = 10 scenario at low q 95 = 3 in the all-tungsten (all-W) ASDEX Upgrade due to the observed poor confinement at low β N . This is mainly due to a degraded pedestal performance and hence investigations at shifting the operational point to higher β N by lowering the current have been started. At higher q 95 , pedestal performance can be recovered by seeding N 2 as well as CD 4 , which is interpreted as improved pedestal stability due to the decrease of bootstrap current with increasing Z eff . Concerning advanced scenarios, the upgrade of ECRH power has allowed experiments with central ctr-ECCD to modify the q -profile in improved H-mode scenarios, showing an increase in confinement at still good MHD stability with flat elevated q -profiles at values between 1.5 and 2. Abstract: Evidence of gamma-ray emission from fast ions in ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) is presented. The plasma scenarios developed for the experiments involve deuteron or proton acceleration. The observed gamma-ray emission level induced by energetic protons is used to determine the effective tail temperature of the proton distribution function that can be compared with neutral particle analyser measurements. More generally the measured emission rate is used to assess the confinement of protons with energies < 400 keV in discharges affected by toroidal Alfven eigenmode instabilities. The derived information on confined ions is combined with observations made with the AUG fast ion loss detector

Abstract: The plasma in the WEGA stellarator is generated and heated by Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ECRH). The microwave is emitted from the low field side mid-plane with power of up to 6+20 kW and with a frequency of 2.45GHz (λ=12.45 cm). The low cut-off density of ncutoff=7.5×10¹⁶m⁻³ makes ECRH on the WEGA stellarator inefficient in both O-mode and X-mode regime. This was confirmed in the first experimental campaign by perpendicular launch of the microwave with a TE11 antenna. In these experiments only edge heating was observed. Density and temperature profiles were hollow [1]. For the over dense plasma heating, mode conversion into the electrostatic electron Bernstein waves (EBW) is required. Two schemes have been tested: the direct X-B (X-mode to Bernstein mode) conversion, where an X-wave must be launched perpendicular to the magnetic field into an over dense plasma with a steep density gradient. In these experiments the strong reflection of the microwave power at the cut-off layer prohibited efficient plasma heating. Another possibility is the O-X-B conversion scheme [2]. The methods of its achievement with different antennas are the subject of this paper. Низька критична щільність плазми для цієї частоти (ncutoff=7.5×10¹⁶м⁻³ ) робить традиційний ЕЦР-нагрів неефективним, як у режимі «Звичайної» (З-хвиля), так і у режимі «Незвичайної» хвилі (Н-хвиля), що було підтверджено у ході першої експериментальної кампанії, коли НІЧ-енергія вводилась перпендикулярно силовим лініям магнітного поля за допомогою циліндричного ТЕ11 хвилеводу. У цих експериментах спостерігався нагрів периферичної плазми, профілі щільності та температури мали порожній характер [1]. Для нагріву плазми з щільністю вище щільності відсічки необхідна трансформація в електростатичну Бернштейн хвилю (ЕБХ). Два сценарії нагріву було випробувано на установці: перший з трансформацією Н-хвилі у ЕБХ, в цьому випадку Н-хвиля повинна бути введена перпендикулярно магнітному полю в плазму з щільністю, яка перевищує критичну. У цих експериментах сильне відбиття НВЧ-енергії у шарі відсічки перешкоджало ефективному нагріву плазми. У другому випадку використовується сценарій з подвійною конверсією спочатку З-хвилі у Н-хвилю з наступною трансформацією Н-хвилі в ЕБХ [2]. Методи реалізації такого сценарію і є темою цієї роботи. Плазма в стеллараторе WEGA создается и нагревается при помощи СВЧ-нагрева на электронно- циклотронной частоте (ЭЦР). Ввод СВЧ-энергии производится с внешней стороны тора в его экваториальной плоскости на частоте 2.45 ГГц (λ=12.45 см) и с максимальной мощностью до 26 кВт. Низкая критическая плотность плазмы для данной частоты (ncutoff=7.5×10¹⁶м⁻³ ) делает традиционный ЭЦР-нагрев неэффективным, как в режиме «обыкновенной» (О-волна), так и в режиме «необыкновенной» волны (Н-волна), что было подтверждено в ходе первой экспериментальной кампании, когда СВЧ-энергия вводилась перпендикулярно силовым линиям магнитного поля при помощи цилиндрического ТЕ11 волновода. В этих экспериментах наблюдался нагрев периферийной плазмы, профили плотности и температуры имели полый характер [1]. Для нагрева плазмы с плотностью, выше плотности отсечки, необходима трансформация в электростатическую Бернштейн волну (ЭБВ). Два сценария нагрева были протестированы на установке: первый с непосредственной трансформацией Н-волны в ЭБВ, в этом случае Н-волна должна быть запущена перпендикулярно магнитному полю в плазму с плотностью, превышающей критическую. В этих экспериментах сильное отражение СВЧ- энергии в слое отсечки препятствовало эффективному нагреву плазмы. Во втором случае используется сценарий с двойной конверсией сначала О-волны в Н-волну с последующим превращением Н-волны в ЭБВ[2]. Методы реализации такого сценария и есть тема настоящей работы.

Abstract: The medium size divertor tokamak ASDEX Upgrade (major and minor radii 1.65 m and 0.5 m, respectively, magnetic-field strength 2.5 T) possesses flexible shaping and versatile heating and current drive systems. Recently the technical capabilities were extended by increasing the electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) power, by installing 2 × 8 internal magnetic perturbation coils, and by improving the ion cyclotron range of frequency compatibility with the tungsten wall. With the perturbation coils, reliable suppression of large type-I edge localized modes (ELMs) could be demonstrated in a wide operational window, which opens up above a critical plasma pedestal density. The pellet fuelling efficiency was observed to increase which gives access to H-mode discharges with peaked density profiles at line densities clearly exceeding the empirical Greenwald limit. Owing to the increased ECRH power of 4 MW, H-mode discharges could be studied in regimes with dominant electron heating and low plasma rotation velocities, i.e. under conditions particularly relevant for ITER. The ion-pressure gradient and the neoclassical radial electric field emerge as key parameters for the transition. Using the total simultaneously available heating power of 23 MW, high performance discharges have been carried out where feed-back controlled radiative cooling in the core and the divertor allowed the divertor peak power loads to be maintained below 5 MW m -2. Under attached divertor conditions, a multi-device scaling expression for the power-decay length was obtained which is independent of major radius and decreases with magnetic field resulting in a decay length of 1 mm for ITER. At higher densities and under partially detached conditions, however, a broadening of the decay length is observed. In discharges with density ramps up to the density limit, the divertor plasma shows a complex behaviour with a localized high-density region in the inner divertor before the outer divertor detaches.

Abstract: Evidence of gamma-ray emission from fast ions in ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) is presented. The plasma scenarios developed for the experiments involve deuteron or proton acceleration. The observed gamma-ray emission level induced by energetic protons is used to determine the effective tail temperature of the proton distribution function that can be compared with neutral particle analyser measurements. More generally the measured emission rate is used to assess the confinement of protons with energies < 400 keV in discharges affected by toroidal Alfven eigenmode instabilities. The derived information on confined ions is combined with observations made with the AUG fast ion loss detector

Abstract: The ASDEX Upgrade programme is directed towards physics input to critical elements of the ITER design and the preparation of ITER operation, as well as addressing physics issues for a future DEMO design. After the finalization of the tungsten coating of the plasma facing components, the re-availability of all flywheel-generators allowed high-power operation with up to 20 MW heating power at Ip up to 1.2 MA. Implementation of alternative ECRH schemes (140 GHz O2- and X3-mode) facilitated central heating above ne = 1.2 × 1020 m−3 and low q95 operation at Bt = 1.8 T. Central O2-mode heating was successfully used in high P/R discharges with 20 MW total heating power and divertor load control with nitrogen seeding. Improved energy confinement is obtained with nitrogen seeding both for type-I and type-III ELMy conditions. The main contributor is increased plasma temperature, no significant changes in the density profile have been observed. This behaviour may be explained by higher pedestal temperatures caused by ion dilution in combination with a pressure limited pedestal and hollow nitrogen profiles. Core particle transport simulations with gyrokinetic calculations have been benchmarked by dedicated discharges using variations of the ECRH deposition location. The reaction of normalized electron density gradients to variations of temperature gradients and the Te/Ti ratio could be well reproduced. Doppler reflectometry studies at the L–H transition allowed the disentanglement of the interplay between the oscillatory geodesic acoustic modes, turbulent fluctuations and the mean equilibrium E × B flow in the edge negative Er well region just inside the separatrix. Improved pedestal diagnostics revealed also a refined picture of the pedestal transport in the fully developed H-mode type-I ELM cycle. Abstract: The ICRF system at ASDEX Upgrade has proved to be very flexible in use, from high power heating down to moderate or low power levels needed for vessel conditioning. As a consequence of these wide varieties of applications the present capabilities of the data acquisition system became a limiting factor, as the CAMAC system could only record up to about 500 ksamples per channel with 12 bit resolution. The upgrade to the SIO (serial I/O data acquisition) system allows a constant sampling time of 5 µs during the whole plasma discharge with an increased resolution of 16 bit. The SIO system was already used in the last campaign of ASDEX Upgrade with 96 channels and will be further expanded. At low power ICRF experiments the output voltage of the linear rf-detectors was rather low, which led to large measurement errors. As a consequence of this the linear detectors were replaced by logarithmic detectors, expanding the dynamic range from 30 db to 60 dB. Abstract: The WEGA stellarator [1] is well suited for fundamental electron Bernstein wave (EBW) studies. Heating and current drive experiments at 2.45 GHz and 28 GHz, carried out in WEGA’s low temperature, steady state overdense plasmas, were supported by intensive modelling. We employ our AMR (Antenna—Mode-conversion—Ray-tracing) code [3] to calculate the O-X-EBW conversion efficiency with a full-wave equation solver, while the power deposition and current drive profiles using ray tracing. Several phenomena have been studied and understood. Particularly, EBW current drive was theoretically predicted and experimentally detected at 2.45 GHz. Simulations confirmed the presence of two (cold and hot) electron components and the resonant behaviour of the EBW power deposition and its dependence on the magnetic field configuration. Abstract: The heavy ion beam probe (HIBP) is a non-perturbing diagnostic, which allows to determine the spatial distributions of the main plasma parameters such as plasma potential, density, electron temperature and poloidal magnetic field in magnetically confined fusion plasma devices. The heavy ion beam probe plasma diagnostic system has been installed and tested on the WEGA stellarator in Greifswald, Germany in 2006-2007. The HIBP on WEGA is planned to be used for the basic investigations of the plasma confinement in a different magnetic configurations. Also, power deposition region will be investigated in experiments with modulated gyrotron heating power. In this work, the first plasma potential and total secondary current profiles measurements results are presented in a comparison with Langmuir probes data. Діагностика зондування плазми за допомогою пучка важких іонів (ЗППВІ) – це діагностика, яка не впливає на параметри плазми, та дозволяє вимірювати просторовий розподіл головних параметрів, таких як потенціал плазми, густина, електронна температура та полоїдальне магнітне поле у пристроях з магнітним утриманням. Діагностика плазми пучком важких іонів була встановлена на стелараторі ВЕГА у м. Грайфсвальд, Німеччина, у 2006-2007р. ЗППВІ на стелараторі ВЕГА заплановано використовувати для дослідження процесів утримання плазми при різних магнітних конфігураціях. Також буде досліджена область поглинання ВЧ- потужності у експериментах з модульованою потужністю гіротрону. У цій роботі представлено перші вимірювання профілю потенціалу та повного струму вторинного пучка у порівнянні з даними, які були одержані від Ленгмюрівських зондів. Диагностика зондирования плазмы с помощью пучка тяжелых ионов (ЗППТИ) является диагностикой, которая не влияет на параметры плазмы и позволяет измерять пространственные распределения главных параметров, таких как потенциал плазмы, плотность, электронная температура и полоидальное магнитное поле в установках с магнитным удержанием. Диагностика плазмы пучком тяжелых ионов была установлена на стеллараторе ВЕГА в г. Грайфсвальде, Германия, в 2006-2007г. ЗППТИ на стеллараторе ВЕГА планируется использовать для исследования процессов удержания плазмы в различных магнитных конфигурациях. Также будет исследована область поглощения ВЧ- мощности в экспериментах с модулируемой мощностью гиротрона. Abstract: Evidence of γ-ray emission from fast ions in ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) is presented. The plasma scenarios developed for the experiments involve deuteron or proton acceleration. The observed γ-ray emission level induced by energetic protons is used to determine the effective tail temperature of the proton distribution function that can be compared with neutral particle analyser measurements. More generally the measured emission rate is used to assess the confinement of protons with energies <400 keV in discharges affected by toroidal Alfvén eigenmode instabilities. Abstract: The ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) programme is directed towards physics input to critical elements of the ITER design and the preparation of ITER operation, as well as addressing physics issues for a future DEMO design. Since 2015, AUG is equipped with a new pair of 3-strap ICRF antennas, which were designed for a reduction of tungsten release during ICRF operation. As predicted, a factor two reduction on the ICRF-induced W plasma content could be achieved by the reduction of the sheath voltage at the antenna limiters via the compensation of the image currents of the central and side straps in the antenna frame. There are two main operational scenario lines in AUG. Experiments with low collisionality, which comprise current drive, ELM mitigation/suppression and fast ion physics, are mainly done with freshly boronized walls to reduce the tungsten influx at these high edge temperature conditions. Full ELM suppression and non-inductive operation up to a plasma current of I p = 0.8 MA could be obtained at low plasma density. Plasma exhaust is studied under conditions of high neutral divertor pressure and separatrix electron density, where a fresh boronization is not required. Substantial progress could be achieved for the understanding of the confinement degradation by strong D puffing and the improvement with nitrogen or carbon seeding. Inward/outward shifts of the electron density profile relative to the temperature profile effect the edge stability via the pressure profile changes and lead to improved/decreased pedestal performance. Seeding and D gas puffing are found to effect the core fueling via changes in a region of high density on the high field side (HFSHD). The integration of all above mentioned operational scenarios will be feasible and naturally obtained in a large device where the edge is more opaque for neutrals and higher plasma temperatures provide a lower collisionality. The combination of exhaust control with pellet fueling has been successfully demonstrated. High divertor enrichment values of nitrogen E N ⩾ 10 have been obtained during pellet injection, which is a prerequisite for the simultaneous achievement of good core plasma purity and high divertor radiation levels. Impurity accumulation observed in the all-metal AUG device caused by the strong neoclassical inward transport of tungsten in the pedestal is expected to be relieved by the higher neoclassical temperature screening in larger devices.

39. Direct observation of electron-Bernstein wave heating by O-X-B-mode conversion at low magnetic field in the WEGA stellarator.

Abstract: The ordinary-extraordinary-Bernstein-mode conversion process for overdense plasma heating with electron-Bernstein waves is demonstrated in the WEGA stellarator at low magnetic field (approximately 50 mT) at 2.45 GHz. For the first time the conversion from an O wave to an X wave is clearly demonstrated by probe measurements of amplitude and phase of the wave field in the conversion region and supported by two-dimensional full-wave calculations. The propagation and resonant absorption of the Bernstein wave is measured in fast power modulation experiments.
