High-performance batteries are poised for electrification of vehicles and therefore mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, which, in turn, promote a sustainable future. However, the design of optimized batteries is challenging due to the nonlinear governing physics and electrochemistry. Recent advancements have demonstrated the potential of deep learning techniques in efficiently designing batteries, particularly in optimizing electrodes and electrolytes. This review provides comprehensive concepts and principles of deep learning and its application in solving battery-related electrochemical problems, which bridges the gap between artificial intelligence and electrochemistry. We also examine the potential challenges and opportunities associated with different deep learning approaches, tailoring them to specific battery requirements. Ultimately, we aim to inspire future advancements in both fundamental scientific understanding and practical engineering in the field of battery technology. Furthermore, we highlight the potential challenges and opportunities for different deep learning methods according to the specific battery demand to inspire future advancement in fundamental science and practical engineering.

Satellite sea surface temperature (SST) images are valuable for various oceanic applications, including climate monitoring, ocean modeling, and marine ecology. However, cloud cover often obscures SST signals, creating gaps in the data that reduce resolution and hinder spatiotemporal analysis, particularly in the waters near Taiwan. Thus, gap-filling methods are crucial for reconstructing missing SST values to provide continuous and consistent data. This study introduces a gap-filling approach using the Double U-Net, a deep neural network model, pretrained on a diverse dataset of Level-4 SST images. These gap-free products are generated by blending satellite observations with numerical models and in situ measurements. The Double U-Net model excels in capturing SST dynamics and detailed spatial patterns, offering sharper representations of ocean current-induced SST patterns than the interpolated outputs of Data Interpolating Empirical Orthogonal Functions (DINEOFs). Comparative analysis with buoy observations shows the Double U-Net model’s enhanced accuracy, with better correlation results and lower error values across most study areas. By analyzing SST at five key locations near Taiwan, the research highlights the Double U-Net’s potential for high-resolution SST reconstruction, thus enhancing our understanding of ocean temperature dynamics. Based on this method, we can combine more high-resolution satellite data in the future to improve the data-filling model and apply it to marine geographic information science.

Abstract Global warming has been affecting human health, including direct mortality and morbidity from extreme heat, storms, drought, and indirect infectious diseases. It is not only “global” but extremely “personal”—it is a matter of life and death for many of us. In this perspective, we propose the use of wearable technologies for localized personal thermoregulation as an innovative method to reduce the impact on health and enable wider adaptability to extreme thermal environments. The state‐of‐the‐art thermoregulation methods and wearable sensing technologies are summarized. In addition, the feasibility of thermoregulation technology in preventive medicine for promoting health under climate change is comprehensively discussed. Further, we provide an outlook on health‐oriented closed loop that can be achieved based on parallel thermoregulation and multiple data inputs from the physiological, environmental, and psychological cues, which could promote individuals and the public to better adapt to global warming.

In this study, a facile and rapid microwave-assisted synthesis method was used to synthesize In2S3 nanosheets, ZnS nanosheets, and ZnIn2S4 nanosheets with sulfur vacancies. The two-dimensional semiconductor photocatalysts of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets were characterized by XRD, FESEM, BET, TEM, XPS, UV–vis diffuse reflectance, and PL spectroscopy. The ZnIn2S4 with sulfur vacancies exhibited an evident energy bandgap value of 2.82 eV, as determined by UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and its energy band diagram was obtained through the combination of XPS and energy bandgap values. ZnIn2S4 nanosheets exhibited about 33.3 and 16.6 times higher photocatalytic hydrogen production than In2S3 nanosheets and ZnS nanosheets, respectively, under visible-light irradiation. Various factors, including materials, sacrificial reagents, and pH values, were used to evaluate the influence of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets on photocatalytic hydrogen production. In addition, the ZnIn2S4 nanosheets revealed the highest photocatalytic hydrogen production from seawater, which was about 209.4 and 106.7 times higher than that of In2S3 nanosheets and ZnS nanosheets, respectively. The presence of sulfur vacancies in ZnIn2S4 nanosheets offers promising opportunities for developing highly efficient and stable photocatalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen production from seawater under visible-light irradiation.

Viral and bacterial pathogens can be transmitted through direct contact with contaminated surfaces. Efficient decontamination of contaminated surfaces could lead to decreased disease transmission, if optimized methods for detecting contaminated surfaces can be developed. Here we describe such a method whereby thermal tracking technology is utilized to detect thermal signatures incurred by surfaces through direct contact. This is applicable in public places to assist with targeted sanitation and cleaning efforts to potentially reduce chance of disease transmission. In this study, we refer to the touched region of the surface as a “touch-point” and examine how the touch-point regions can be automatically localized with a computer vision pipeline of a thermal image sequence. The pipeline mainly comprises two components: a single-frame and a multi-frame analysis. The single-frame analysis consists of a Background subtraction method for image pre-processing and a U-net deep learning model for segmenting the touch-point regions. The multi-frame analysis performs a summation of the outputs from the single-frame analysis and creates a cumulative map of touch-points. Results show that the touch-point detection pipeline can achieve 75.0% precision and 81.5% F1-score for the testing experiments of predicting the touch-point regions. This preliminary study shows potential applications of preventing indirect pathogen spread in public spaces and improving the efficiency of cleaning sanitation.

Future zero-energy buildings require smart and dynamic utilization of renewable energy for efficient indoor temperature control. Here the authors show that the dual-mode device enables building envelopes to switch between solar heating and radiative cooling to save HVAC energy for all seasons and all climate zones.

Background: Wearable and unobtrusive sensing devices are rapidly evolving for long-term cardiovascular monitoring. However, most of the cardiovascular device requires multi-channel physiological signals acquisition, especially in continuous blood pressure (BP) measurement using pulse transition time (PTT) based methods. The multi-devices implementation could impede wearable applications. Objective: This study developed a wearable neck patch device using single-channel impedance plethysmography (IPG) sensing for cardiovascular monitoring, including continuous BP and heart rate (HR) measurement. Methods: IPG-based BP model was derived based on the Bramwell-Hill equation. A patch IPG device was designed and installed above the carotid artery of the subject neck. To validate the BP and HR functions of our device, the Bland-Altman plots were performed to evaluate the estimation error between the reference and the proposed devices within 20 healthy subjects. Results: The BP performance indicates that systolic BP (SBP) estimation error was -0.16 ± 2.97 mmHg and 2.43 ± 1.71 mmHg in terms of mean error (ME) and mean absolute error (MAE), and 0.09 ± 3.30 mmHg and 2.83 ± 1.68 mmHg for diastolic BP (DBP) estimation. Moreover, the HR accuracy has the ME and MAE of 0.02 ± 0.17 bpm and 0.14 ± 0.08 bpm; mean percentage error (MPE) and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) obtained 0.04 ± 0.23 % and 0.19 ± 0.12 %. Based on statistical results, the BP and HR function of our device satisfied with AAMI/ANSI criteria below 5 ± 8 mmHg and ± 5 bpm or ± 10%. Conclusion: This study implemented a wearable neck patch device with single-channel IPG acquisition that provided two significant cardiovascular parameters of continuous BP and HR, and its performance agreed with standard criteria based on validation with reference sensors. Significance: The proposed proof-of-concept IPG neck patch device has a high potential for wearable applications and low-cost manufacturing in cardiovascular monitoring.

The skin sea surface temperature (SST) observed by the geostationary Himawari-8 satellite and bulk SST, including four in situ observations from ships, drifters, Argo, and buoys constitute more than 90,000 SST pairs used to analyze near-surface temperature variations. From July 2015 to May 2022, an average SST bias of 0.10 °C and root mean square error of 0.99 °C were observed in the waters adjacent to Taiwan. This study effectively observed that the skin effect generated by ocean wind and solar shortwave radiation caused the occurrence of a cool skin layer and diurnal warm layer (DWL), and 90% of the SST bias was in a range of −1.55~1.71 °C. In the daytime, the skin layer received solar shortwave radiation, thus increasing temperature and causing a DWL. With the increase in insolation, the SST bias in the DWL became more obvious. During winter, strong wind, or low shortwave radiation, the DWL may disappear and turn into a cool skin layer. At night, the near-surface SST was dominated by the cool skin effect, but the DWL generated in the daytime would remain if the wind speed was weak. However, the different hydrological characteristics of the observation position and its distance from the coast could affect the results of the skin effect. Whether there is a rapid change in ocean stratification in a spatial grid of nearly four square kilometers needs to be explored in the future.

Soil pollution by heavy metals is a problem of global concern, requiring the development of remediation technologies. Here the authors report a method based on asymmetrical alternating current electrochemistry, which enables recycling of soil washing chemicals and eliminates secondary pollution.

Podocytes derived from human induced pluripotent stem (hiPS) cells are enabling studies of kidney development and disease. However, many of these studies are carried out in traditional tissue culture plates that do not accurately recapitulate the molecular and mechanical features necessary for modeling tissue- and organ-level functionalities. Overcoming these limitations requires the design and application of tunable biomaterial scaffolds. Silk fibroin is an attractive biomaterial due to its biocompatibility and versatility, which include its ability to form hydrogels, sponge-like scaffolds, and electrospun fibers and membranes appropriate for tissue engineering and biomedical applications. In this study, we show that hiPS cells can be differentiated into post-mitotic kidney glomerular podocytes on electrospun silk fibroin membranes functionalized with laminin. The resulting podocytes remain viable and express high levels of podocyte-specific markers consistent with the mature cellular phenotype. The resulting podocytes were propagated for at least two weeks, enabling secondary cell-based applications and analyses. This study demonstrates for the first time that electrospun silk fibroin membrane can serve as a supportive biocompatible platform for human podocyte differentiation and propagation. We anticipate that the results of this study will pave the way for the use of electrospun membranes and other biomimetic scaffolds for kidney tissue engineering, including the development of co-culture systems and organs-on-chips microphysiological devices.

Coastal ocean dynamics application radar (CODAR) SeaSonde high-frequency (HF) radars deployed along the coast of Taiwan were used to reveal ocean surface current variations both hourly and through climatological seasons in the Penghu Channel (PHC), southeastern Taiwan Strait (TS), from December 2014 to December 2020. The ocean current in the PHC has a semidiurnal tidal cycle, and the seasonal main flow, wind direction, and wind strength significantly affect the direction and speed of the flow passing through the PHC. The speed of the tidal current in the PHC area can reach more than 1 m/s, and the monthly average flow speed in the PHC is between 0.12 (winter) and 0.24 m/s (summer). Several buoys indicated that the southward flow along the western coast of Taiwan drifted through the PHC in fall and winter. The HF radar observations confirmed the same, implying that this occurred during the strong northeastern monsoon. For a weak northerly wind or even southerly wind, the flow in the PHC can be northward. Different wind directions can affect the speed of the flow passing through the PHC and the branch flow in the northern PHC. The HF radar results are highly consistent with the spatial characteristics of satellite data regarding the sea surface temperature, sea surface salinity, and chlorophyll concentrations; however, there are significant differences from the satellite-derived ocean current.

This study investigates the variations in flow patterns in the northern Taiwan Strait in summer using high-frequency (HF) radar measurements, satellite-tracked drifter trajectories and numerical models. There is an obvious interaction between intra-diurnal tides and ocean currents in northwestern Taiwan. When the tide changes between high tide and low tide, the change in direction of the nearshore flow occurs before the change in the offshore flow. Drifter trajectories show that there are three different drifting paths in the Taiwan Strait in summer. One path is along the west coast of Taiwan from the southwest coast to the northeast coast. Another path is the same as the first one but leads northward to the East China Sea instead of eastward to the northeast coast of Taiwan. The other path exists along the west coast of Taiwan, some distance out, after being deflected by the bottom ridge. The regional ocean modeling system model was used in this study to clarify the influencing factors that lead to these three paths. The results of multiple simulations and HF radar data indicate that the bifurcation of the first two drift paths in northwestern Taiwan is caused by ebb and flood tide transitions. The different routes of the latter two paths are due to the significant speed difference between the nearshore current and the offshore current approximately 45 km from the coast.

Summary: Excessive phosphorus in water is the primary culprit for eutrophication, which causes approximately $2.2 billion annual economic loss in the United States. This study demonstrates a phosphate-selective sustainable method by adopting Garcinia subelliptica leaves as a natural bio-template, where MgMn-layered double hydroxide (MgMn-LDH) and graphene oxide (GO) can be grown in situ to obtain L-GO/MgMn-LDH. After calcination, the composite shows a hierarchical porous structure and selective recognition of phosphate, which achieves significantly high and recyclable selective phosphate adsorption capacity and desorption rate of 244.08 mg-P g−1 and 85.8%, respectively. The detail variation of LDHs during calcination has been observed via in situ transmission electron microscope (TEM). Moreover, the roles in facilitating phosphate adsorption and antimicrobial ability of chemical constituents in Garcinia subelliptica leaves, biflavonoids, and triterpenoids have been investigated. These results indicate the proposed bio-templated adsorbent is practical and eco-friendly for phosphorus sustainability in commercial wastewater treatment.

Yilan Bay is in the northeast corner of Taiwan at the junction of the East China Sea (ECS) and the Pacific Ocean. This study clarified the composition of water masses adjacent to Yilan Bay. The upper seawater in the bay is characterized by Kuroshio surface water, Taiwan warm current water, and shelf mixed water masses. The flow field in this area is mainly determined by the inter-actions among the northeastern Taiwan countercurrent, Kuroshio Current (KC), and tidal currents. The fall season is the main rainfall period in Yilan Bay, which causes a large amount of river runoff and a further increase in chlorophyll concentration, and the salinity of the upper water layer is observed much lower than other seasons. Water with a high chlorophyll concentration can flow into the ECS with ebb currents and the KC with ebb and flood currents. Combining hourly geosynchronous ocean color imager data and numerical simulation flow field helps us understand short-term changes of chlorophyll concentration. The trajectories of the drifters and virtual particle simulations help us understand the sources and movement of ocean currents in Yilan Bay. The seasonal swing of the KC path outside the bay is an important factor affecting the flow field and hydrological characteristics.

Continuous hemodynamic monitoring is important for long-term cardiovascular healthcare, especially in hypertension. The impedance plethysmography (IPG) based carotid pulse sensing is a non-invasive diagnosis technique for measuring pulse signals and further evaluating the arterial conditions of the patient such as continuous blood pressure (BP) monitoring. To reach the high-resolution IPG-based carotid pulse detection for cardiovascular applications, this study provides an optimized measurement parameter in response to obvious pulsation from the carotid artery. The influence of the frequency of excitation current, electrode cross-sectional area, electrode arrangements, and physiological site of carotid arteries on IPG measurement resolution was thoroughly investigated for optimized parameters. In this study, the IPG system was implemented and installed on the subject’s neck above the carotid artery to evaluate the measurement parameters. The measurement results within 6 subjects obtained the arterial impedance variation of 2137 mΩ using the optimized measurement conditions, including excitation frequency of 50 kHz, a smaller area of 2 cm2, electrode spacing of 4 cm and 1.7 cm for excitation and sensing functions, and location on the left side of the neck. The significance of this study demonstrates an optimized measurement methodology of IPG-based carotid pulse sensing that greatly improves the measurement quality in cardiovascular monitoring.

Satellite remote-sensing data and glider data are used to study the Kuroshio meander and surface properties, east of Taiwan. The Kuroshio meandered eastward 13 times between 1993 and 2013 because of cold eddies propagating from the western Pacific. The maximum duration of the meanders was 80 days. The farthest eastward shift of the Kuroshio axis was approximately 270 km from its original position, depending on the size of the cold eddy. Cold eddies reduce the current speed at the Kuroshio axis to 84% of its seasonal average, which is approximately 0.75 m/s. According to glider data, isopycnal uplifting is produced when cold eddies impinge on the Kuroshio, and satellite observations show that the sea surface temperature (SST) drops 1-3 °C and that the chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentration increases up to 0.54 mg/m3.

The waters in the north of Taiwan are located at the southern end of the East China Sea (ECS), adjacent to the Taiwan Strait (TS), and the Kuroshio region. To understand the physical dynamic process of ocean currents and the temporal and spatial distribution of the ocean chlorophyll concentration in the north of Taiwan, hourly coastal ocean dynamics applications radar (CODAR) flow field data and geostationary ocean color imager (GOCI) data are analyzed here. According to data from December 2014 to May 2020, the water in the TS flows along the northern coast of Taiwan into the Kuroshio region with a velocity of 0.13 m/s in spring and summer through the ECS. In winter, the Kuroshio invades the ECS shelf, where the water flows into the TS through the ECS with a velocity of 0.08 m/s. The seasonal variation of ocean chlorophyll concentration along the northwestern coast of Taiwan is obvious, where the average chlorophyll concentration from November to January exceeds 2.0 mg/m3, and the lowest concentration in spring is 1.4 mg/m3. It is apparent that the tidal currents in the north of Taiwan flow eastward and westward during ebb and flood periods, respectively. Affected by the background currents, the flow velocity exhibits significant seasonal changes, namely, 0.43 m/s in summer and 0.27 m/s in winter during the ebb period and is 0.26 m/s in summer and 0.45 m/s in winter during the flood period. The chlorophyll concentration near the shore is also significantly affected by the tidal currents. Based on CODAR data, virtual drifter experiments, and GOCI data, this research provides novel and important knowledge of ocean current movement process in the north of Taiwan and indicates diurnal to seasonal variations in the ocean chlorophyll concentration, facilitating future research on the interaction between the TS, ECS, and Kuroshio.

Dynamics of ocean current-induced island wake has been an important issue in global oceanography. Green Island, a small island located off southeast of Taiwan on the Kuroshio path was selected as the study area to more understand the spatial structure and temporal variation of well-organized vortices formed by the interaction between the Kuroshio and the island. Sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration data derived from the Himawari-8 satellite and the second generation global imager (SGLI) of global change observation mission (GCOM-C) were used in this study. The spatial SST and Chl-a variations in designed observation lines and the cooling zone transitions on the left and right sides of the vortices were investigated using 250 m spatial resolution GCOM-C data. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology general circulation model (MITgcm) simulation confirmed that the positive and negative vortices were sequentially detached from each other in a few hours. In addition, totals of 101 vortexes from July 2015 to December 2019 were calculated from the 1-h temporal resolution Himawari-8 imagery. The average vortex propagation speed was 0.95 m/s. Totals of 38 cases of two continuous vortices suggested that the average vortex shedding period is 14.8 h with 1.15 m/s of the average incoming surface current speed of Green Island, and the results agreed to the ideal Strouhal-Reynolds number fitting curve relation. Combined with the satellite observation and numerical model simulation, this study demonstrates the structure of the wake area could change quickly, and the water may mix in different vorticity states for each observation station.

The HadISST (Hadley Centre Sea Ice and Sea Surface Temperature) dataset is used to define the years of El Niño, El Niño Modoki, and La Niña events and to find out the impacts of these events on typhoon activity. The results show that the formation positions of typhoon are farther eastward moving in El Niño years than in La Niña years and much further eastward in El Niño Modoki years. The lifetime and the distance of movement are longer, and the intensity of typhoons is stronger in El Niño and in El Niño Modoki years than in La Niña years. The Accumulated Cyclone Energy of typhoon is highly correlated with the Oceanic Niño Index with a correlation coefficient of 0.79. We also find that the typhoons anomalously decrease during El Niño years but increase during El Niño Modoki years. Besides, there are two types of El Niño Modoki, I and II. The intensity of typhoon in El Niño Modoki I years is stronger than in El Niño Modoki II years. Furthermore, the centroid position of the Western Pacific Warm Pool is strongly related to the area of typhoon formation with a correlation coefficient of 0.95.
