Abstract

The existing literature provides evidence of the link between media reporting and suicide in terms of either preventive or provocative effects. Hence, working with media representatives on responsible reporting on suicide is of great importance. Until recently in Slovenia, there has been an obvious lack of communication between media representatives and suicidologists. The aims of the present study were twofold; firstly, to introduce the adaptation and dissemination of intervention on responsible media reporting, and secondly, to evaluate the effectiveness of the implemented intervention on suicide reporting.

Abstract

Abstract Background The Awareness program was designed as a part of the EU-funded Saving and Empowering Young Lives in Europe (SEYLE) intervention study to promote mental health of adolescents in 11 European countries by helping them to develop problem-solving skills and encouraging them to self-recognize the need for help as well as how to help peers in need. Methods For this descriptive study all coordinators of the SEYLE Awareness program answered an open-ended evaluation questionnaire at the end of the project implementation. Their answers were synthesized and analyzed and are presented here. Results The results show that the program cultivated peer understanding and support. Adolescents not only learned about mental health by participating in the Awareness program, but the majority of them also greatly enjoyed the experience. Conclusions Recommendations for enhancing the successes of mental health awareness programs are presented. Help and cooperation from schools, teachers, local politicians and other stakeholders will lead to more efficacious future programs.

8. Slovenian validation of the Capacity to Love Inventory: associations with clinical measures and mindfulness.

Abstract

Aim: The main purpose of the present study was to validate the Slovenian version of the 41-item Capacity to Love Inventory (CTL-I). Based on psychoanalytic theory, limitations to capacity to love are expected to be associated with personality dysfunction and disintegration as well as fundamental mental capacities such as self-reflection and self-awareness. Method: To examine these assumptions, a sample of 552 Slovenian non-clinical individuals were recruited through academic networks. The construct validity of the CTL-I was assessed using a confirmatory factor analysis and convergent validity of the CTL-I and its subscales was established against IPO-16, PID-5 BF, MAAS. Results: Our findings show that the Slovenian version of the CTL-I replicated the six-factor structure, exhibiting good model fit as well as satisfactory internal consistency of all subscales. In line with expectations, capacity to love was found to be inversely associated with dysfunctional personality traits and structural personality disturbances. Accordingly, higher dispositional mindfulness was coherently associated with all domains of CTL-I. Conclusion: The results add to the growing evidence for the cross-cultural validity and sound psychometric properties of CTL-I, presented here in the Slovenian version. Abstract

Background and Objectives: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) preventive measures affected various aspects of people's lives, while also representing an important risk factor for people's mental health. In the present study, we examined the negative psychological consequences of the preventive measures on people's mental health and the protective factors that strengthened their mental health and well-being during the pandemic. Materials and Methods: A study, using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods based on a Delphi protocol, was conducted with a sample of Slovenian professionals who worked with people from different demographic groups (i.e., children and adolescents, emerging adults, the adult working population, the elderly) during the pandemic. We conducted (i) a qualitative study involving semi-structured interviews with 11 professionals and (ii) a quantitative study where 73 professionals completed a structured online questionnaire. Results: Experts recognized the disruption of informal face-to-face social contacts as the measure with the greatest impact on people's lives across all groups studied, the effect being particularly evident in relation to individuals' development period and socio-demographic characteristics. An individual's ability to adapt to change and emotional support provided by family or other close persons contributed significantly to maintaining mental health and well-being during the pandemic. Conclusions: Considering the interplay of various COVID-19-related risk and protective factors for mental health, enabling and promoting the maintenance and development of social relationships (including through alternative pathways) should be a priority aspect of (mental health) intervention for all demographic groups. Abstract

Background and Objectives: The impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) goes beyond the consequences of the infectious disease, especially as the measures taken to prevent the spread of the virus have had a very profound impact on people's social relationships and everyday lives. Several studies have investigated these effects, but there is a lack of longitudinal studies in Central Europe. Objective: The aim of our study was to observe changes in well-being, loneliness, and suicidal behaviour before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic using the same population-based cohort. Materials and Methods: A representative sample of 440 participants completed online questionnaires at four time points: 2019 (wave 0), 2021 (wave 1), 2022 (wave 2), and 2023 (wave 3). Results: The results show significant changes in the levels of well-being and loneliness over these periods. In particular, both social and emotional loneliness increased during the pandemic, while emotional loneliness increased to a greater extent without further decreases. Well-being appeared to increase after pandemic-related restrictions diminished but decreased again one year later. No significant changes concerning suicidal ideation were observed. Conclusions: Our study suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic changed the way in which people perceive their well-being and especially their relationships with others. 41. Teacher Satisfaction with School and Psychological Well-Being Affects Their Readiness to Help Children with Mental Health Problems

Abstract

Objective: In support of a whole-school approach to mental health promotion, this study was conducted to find out whether and how significantly teachers' satisfaction with school and their subjective psychological well-being are related to the belief that they can help pupils with mental health problems. Design: Cross-sectional data were collected as a part of the European Union's, Seventh Framework Programme for Research (FP7) Saving and Empowering Young Lives in Europe (SEYLE) study. One of the elements of the SEYLE study was to evaluate teachers' attitudes and knowledge related to pupils' mental health issues and their own psychological well-being, as well as their satisfaction with the school environment. Setting: The sample of schools from the SEYLE study sites representing 11 European countries was randomly chosen according to prior defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The final cross-sectional database used for analysis in the current study comprised 2485 teachers from 158 randomly selected schools. Method: Respondents' belief that teachers can help pupils with mental health problems served as the outcome variable in our predictions with probability of the positive answer being modelled in the logistic regression analysis. Teachers' subjective psychological well-being and school satisfaction were included as independent variables in the logistic regression model and several other relevant variables were added to statistically control for them. Multiple models were tested in order to obtain the final modResults: Logistic regression models showed that better satisfaction with general school climate, higher psychological well-being, and the ability to understand pupils' mental health problems increased the odds of teachers' readiness to help pupils with mental health problems. Conclusion: By providing a good school environment, by valuing the subjective psychological well-being of the teachers, and by providing adequate training to fulfil their 'gatekeeper' role, the preconditions to improve the mental health of the pupils they teach will be achieved. These suggestions are in line with a whole-school approach to mental health promotion.

47. Slovenian Validation of the Capacity to Love Inventory – A Preliminary Study

Abstract

Our study aimed to test the psychometric properties of the Slovenian version of the Capacity to Love Inventory (CTL-I, Kapusta et al., 2018). The CTL-I is a 41-item self-report questionnaire that measures the construct of capacity to love. The measure itself has been operationalized based on findings from clinical practice and psychodynamic theory and relates to both clinically relevant symptoms as well as healthier manifestations of personality. The CTL-I measures six dimensions:interest in the life project of the other, basic trust, gratitude, common ego ideal, permanence of sexual passion and loss and mourning. Due to the concept of capacity to love being closely related to relationship quality, we used the Quality of Relationship Inventory (QRI) to examine external validity. Our final study sample consisted of 224 non-clinical adults. Overall, the Slovenian version of the CTL-I showed a satisfactory model fit, comparable to that of previous validation studies. The QRI subscales were found to correlate with most of the CTL-I factors, as well as the CTL-I subscales with each other. Because of the instrument being tested on a smaller convenience sample in this study, we believe our findings should be viewed as a preliminary attempt at validating the Slovenian translation of the CTL-I. While the results of the present study are promising, we believe additional research is needed to fully assess the psychometric properties of the Slovenian CTL-I., Cilj je ovoga istraživanja bio ispitati psihometrijske karakteristike slovenske verzije Inventara sposobnosti za ljubav (CTL-I; Kapusta i sur., 2018). CTL-I je upitnik za samoprocjenu od 41 čestice koji mjeri konstrukt sposobnosti za ljubav. Sama je mjera operacionalizirana na temelju istraživanja u kliničkoj praksi i psihodinamskoj teoriji, a odnosi se na klinički relevantne simptome, kao i na zdravije manifestacije ličnosti. CTL-I mjeri šest dimenzija: zanimanje za životni plan drugoga, osnovno povjerenje, zahvalnost, zajednički ego ideal, postojanost seksualne strasti te gubitak I žalost. Budući da je poznato da je koncept sposobnosti za ljubav usko povezan s kvalitetom veze, koristili smo Inventar kvalitete odnosa (QRI) za ispitivanje vanjske valjanosti. Konačni se uzorak ispitanika sastojao od 224 nekliničke odrasle osobe. Slovenska verzija CTL-I-ja pokazala je zadovoljavajuće pristajanje modela usporedivo s onim u prethodnim validacijskim studijama. Supskale QRI-ja koreliraju s većinom faktora CTL-I-ja, kao i supskale CTL-I-ja jedna s drugom. Budući da je instrument u ovome istraživanju testiran na manjemu prigodnom uzorku, vjerujemo da bi dobivene nalaze trebalo promatrati kao preliminarni pokušaj validacije slovenskoga prijevoda CTL-I-ja. Iako su rezultati ove studije obećavajući, potrebna su daljnja istraživanja da bi se u potpunosti procijenila psihometrijska svojstva slovenskoga prijevoda CTL-I-ja.

49. Loneliness and mental health during the covid-19 pandemic among slovenian and croatian young adults

Abstract

The relationship between the epidemic and mental health is a complex and multifaceted problem, with loneliness being one of the central concepts related to the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic had a significant impact on feelings of loneliness among young adults, especially students. During this time, young adults were more likely to use social media and less likely to seek social support. The aim of our study was to compare loneliness and mental health among young adults in Croatia and Slovenia during COVID19 pandemic. A sample of 1199 young adults aged 18-29 years (M = 22.1, SD = 2.56), of whom 70.3% were female. We assessed mental health parameters (depression, anxiety, stress), loneliness, death ideation and suicide ideation. The study was conducted in spring 2021 during the third wave of COVID-19 pandemic. Results show that during the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, almost two thirds of young adults in Croatia and Slovenia reported moderate to severe feelings of loneliness. There was a significant difference between the two countries in mental health, death ideation and suicide ideation, where university students in Croatia reporting greater feelings of depression, anxiety, stress, death ideation and suicide ideation. However, in both countries, young adults with moderate to severe feelings of loneliness were significantly more likely to report poorer mental health and greater death ideation compared to those with no to mild feelings of loneliness, but only in the Croatian sample was there a significant difference between these two groups in suicide ideation. The results of this study show that during the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the mental health of young adults was more impaired in Croatia than in Slovenia, which might be partly explained by differences in the samples (only university students in the Croatian sample). However, loneliness played an important role in association in the poor mental health of this population during the pandemic. Thus, the circumstances of the pandemic only reinforce the need for effective approaches to address loneliness among young adults.

Abstract

Insecure attachment has been identified as a risk factor for adolescent psychopathology and, consequently, for suicidal behavior. We aimed to highlight the relationship between the attachment styles of adolescents and their suicidal behavior and to investigate the role of each parent in the suicidality pathway of adolescents. The sample consisted of 217 adolescent inpatients who were at the highest risk for suicidal behavior and who were hospitalized in the Unit for Intensive Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Self-report questionnaires assessing their attachment to their parents, their acquired capability for attempting suicide, their suicidality, and a number of traumatic life events were administered. The results showed a higher level of attachment avoidance rather than attachment anxiety among the most at-risk adolescents. An acquired capability for suicide (ACS) mediated the positive correlation between adolescents’ attachment avoidance in relation to the mother or father and their suicidality. The suppressive mediating effect of an ACS on the association between attachment anxiety in relation to the father and suicidality was detected. The odds ratio for attempted suicide was more than two times higher for adolescents who were insecurely attached to their father compared to adolescents who were insecurely attached to their mother. Our results confirmed the importance of attachment, especially paternal attachment, in developing suicidality during adolescence. Preventive and clinical interventions should target these important domains with the aim of decreasing suicidality among adolescents.
