Tangencies correspond to singularities of impact systems, separating between impacting and non-impacting trajectory segments. The closure of their orbits constitute the singularity set, which, even in the simpler billiard limit, is known to have a complex structure. The properties of this set are studied in a class of near integrable two degrees-of-freedom Hamiltonian impact systems. For this class of systems, in the integrable limit, on iso-energy surfaces, tangency appears at an isolated torus. We construct a piecewise smooth iso-energy return map for the perturbed flow near such a tangent torus and study its properties. Away from the singularity set, this map has invariant curves, so, the singularity set is included in a limiting singularity band. An asymptotic upper bound of this band width is found for both non-resonant and resonant tangent tori. Numerical simulations of the dynamics inside the band reveal long transients, yet, these are made shorter when the singular term coefficient is large.

The dynamics of a beam held on a horizontal frame by springs and bouncing off a step is described by a separable two degrees of freedom Hamiltonian system with impacts that respect, point wise, the separability symmetry. The energy in each degree of freedom is preserved, and the motion along each level set is conjugated, via action angle coordinates, to a geodesic flow on a flat two-dimensional surface in the four dimensional phase space. Yet, for a range of energies, these surfaces are not the simple Liouville-Arnold tori - these are tori of genus two, thus the motion on them is not conjugated to simple rotations. Namely, even though energy is not transferred between the two degrees of freedom, the impact system is quasi-integrable and is not of the Liouville-Arnold type. In fact, for each level set in this range, the motion is conjugated to the well studied and highly non-trivial dynamics of directional motion in L-shaped billiards, where the billiard area and shape as well as the direction of motion vary continuously on iso-energetic level sets. Return maps to Poincar\'e section of the flow are shown to be conjugated, on each level set, to interval exchange maps which are computed, up to quadratures, in the general nonlinear case and explicitly for the case of two linear oscillators bouncing off a step. It is established that for any such oscillator-step system there exist step locations for which some of the level sets exhibit motion which is neither periodic nor ergodic. Changing the impact surface by introducing additional steps, staircases, strips and blocks from which the particle is reflected, leads to iso-energy surfaces that are foliated by families of genus-k level set surfaces, where the number and order of families of genus k depend on the energy., Comment: To appear in the "Proceedings of the MSRI 2018 Fall semester on Hamiltonian Systems"

Near-integrability is usually associated with smooth small perturbations of smooth integrable systems. Studying integrable mechanical Hamiltonian flows with impacts that respect the symmetries of the integrable structure provides an additional rich class of non-smooth systems that can be analyzed. Such systems exhibit rich dynamics, as, in addition to the underlying integrable structure, some of the trajectories may undergo only transverse impact, others may undergo also tangential impacts, and some trajectories do not impact at all. Under perturbations, each of these classes of orbits behaves differently. Tools for classifying these different types of dynamics in 2 degrees-of-freedom Hamiltonian impact systems with underlying separable integrable dynamics are presented. Moreover, some of these tools may be extended to far from integrable cases. In particular, a generalization of the energy momentum bifurcation diagram, Fomenko graphs and the hierarchy of bifurcations framework to impact systems is constructed. It is shown that such representations classify dynamically different regions in phase space. For the integrable and near integrable (small perturbations) cases these provide global information on the dynamics whereas for the far from integrable (non-perturbative) regimes, these provide rough classification of the first impact map. A class of Hamiltonian impact systems exhibiting smooth near integrable behavior is presented. The underlying unperturbed model investigated is an integrable, separable, 2 degrees of freedom mechanical impact system with effectively bounded energy level sets and a single straight wall which preserves the separable structure. Singularities in the system appear either as trajectories with tangent impacts or as singularities in the underlying Hamiltonian structure (e.g. separatrices). It is shown that away from these singularities, a small perturbation from the integrable structure results in smooth near integrable behavior. Such a perturbation may occur from a small deformation or tilt of the wall which breaks the separability upon impact, the addition of a small regular perturbation to the system, or the combination of both. In some simple cases explicit formulae to the leading order term in the near integrable return map are derived. Near integrability is also shown to persist when the hard billiard boundary is replaced by a singular, smooth, steep potential, thus extending the near-integrability results beyond the scope of regular perturbations. These systems constitute an additional class of examples of near integrable impact systems, beyond the traditional one dimensional oscillating billiards, nearly elliptic billiards, and the near-integrable behavior near the boundary of convex smooth billiards with or without magnetic field., Comment: Submitted

We propose a general framework for reconstructing transform-sparse images from undersampled (squared)-magnitude data corrupted with outliers. This framework is implemented using a multi-layered approach, combining multiple initializations (to address the nonconvexity of the phase retrieval problem), repeated minimization of a convex majorizer (surrogate for a nonconvex objective function), and iterative optimization using the alternating directions method of multipliers. Exploiting the generality of this framework, we investigate using a Laplace measurement noise model better adapted to outliers present in the data than the conventional Gaussian noise model. Using simulations, we explore the sensitivity of the method to both the regularization and penalty parameters. We include 1D Monte Carlo and 2D image reconstruction comparisons with alternative phase retrieval algorithms. The results suggest the proposed method, with the Laplace noise model, both increases the likelihood of correct support recovery and reduces the mean squared error from measurements containing outliers. We also describe exciting extensions made possible by the generality of the proposed framework, including regularization using analysis-form sparsity priors that are incompatible with many existing approaches., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures
