Several studies have reported conflicting results when assessing associations between stress and repetitive behaviors in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Some factors that may have caused these discrepant results include the monitoring of a single broad category for repetitive behaviors, the heterogeneity of the participants, and the use of indirect measures. To address the prior issues, our study explored the relationship between salivary cortisol and direct observation measures of stereotypy in four minimally verbal children with ASD. To this end, we combined an alternating-treatment design with multiple regression analyses to examine the interaction between the two variables. The analyses indicated that the mean value of cortisol was negatively associated with global and motor stereotypy. No significant relation was found between mean value of cortisol and vocal stereotypy. These results highlight the complex relationship between stress and stereotypy and emphasize the relevance of conducting research on a larger scale, which would have a direct impact on our understanding of a core feature of ASD.

Abstract This study investigated whether the facial expressions of chief executive officers (CEOs) are associated with corporate performance. A photograph of the CEO or president of each company that appeared on the Fortune Global 500 list for 2018 was taken from the company’s official website. The smile intensity and action unit activation in each face were calculated using a pre-trained machine learning algorithm, FACET. The results revealed a positive association between smile intensity and company profit, even when controlling for the company’s geographic location (Western culture versus others) and the CEO’s gender. Furthermore, when the type of smile was examined with the activation of each action unit, this significant positive association was identified in the dominant smile but not in the reward and affiliative smiles. Relationships among the leader’s smile intensity, group strategy, and group performance are discussed.

ObjectiveParents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have parenting styles that differ from parents of typically developing children. Integration of a service dog (SD) at home has been demonstrated as having multiple effects within families of children with ASD. Our aims were to investigate if (a) specific parenting styles can be identified during parents’ interactions with their child with ASD using ethological methods, and (b) integration of a SD have an effect on these styles.MethodsBehavioural coding was performed on videos recorded at home by 20 parents of 6-12-years old children with ASD before SD integration. Parents were asked to record themselves and their child while making a puzzle. 14 parents performed a second similar recording 3-6 months after SD integration. Data were analysed using Principal Component Analysis, Hierarchical Cluster Analysis and non-parametric tests.ResultsThree parenting styles emerged: Parents Involved in the Task (PIT), Parents Relaxed in the Interaction (PRI), and Parents Disengaged from the Interaction (PDI). PIT were characterised as more controlling and verbally focused on the activity. PRI were less controlling and talk about things other than the activity. The same applied to PDI, except that they were less warm in their interactions. Analysis performed after SD integration revealed that these groups also diverged in the evolution of certain behaviours.ConclusionThis study is the first to demonstrate that behavioural observations can highlight different parenting styles in caregivers of children with ASD, and that the integration of a SD has effects on these styles, with variation according to parents’ style prior to SD integration. Indeed, a decrease in activity control behaviours was observed in parents with an initial profile characterise by higher expression of such behaviours (i.e., PIT), while an increase of those behaviours was observed in parents initially with an initial profile characterise by a weaker expression of such behaviours (i.e., PRI). Interestingly, the last profile characterized by less engagement in the interaction and activity (i.e., PDI) did not seem to show significant changes.

This article provides an overview of over 100 years of social science research on deception and lying. The aim is to raise awareness on the full scope of research findings on deception and lying to help the scientific community to communicate these research findings to practitioners who assess the veracity of individuals statements, further future research, better understand the research field of deception and lying, and bridge gaps that are relevant to scholars and practitioners interested in deception and lying. To begin, Web of Science is introduced, and the steps undertaken to build our database are described. Then, the yearly evolution of research findings on deception and lying is presented. Finally, the journals and the research areas, as well as the authors, the institutions and the countries that contributed the most to the deception and lying literature are highlighted, as well as the most used keywords and cited articles.

Two original studies explored relationships between visual attention of children with ASD (candidates for receiving a service dog) and their behaviors during their first interaction with a service dog. The first study consisted in video behavioural analyses of 16 children with ASD interacting with a service dog. During the interaction with a service dog, the time children with ASD spent looking towards social items vs objects was associated with how they interacted with the service dog. The second study was exploratory (i.e. 6 children), using the same behavioural approach but coupled with eye-tracking data. The more children with ASD looked at both their parent and the evaluator, as opposed to inanimate items, the more they interacted with the service dog.

Processing and recognizing facial expressions are key factors in human social interaction. Past research suggests that individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) present difficulties to decode facial expressions. Those difficulties are notably attributed to altered strategies in the visual scanning of expressive faces. Numerous studies have demonstrated the multiple benefits of exposure to pet dogs and service dogs on the interaction skills and psychosocial development of children with ASD. However, no study has investigated if those benefits also extend to the processing of facial expressions. The aim of this study was to investigate if having a service dog had an influence on facial expression processing skills of children with ASD. Two groups of 15 children with ASD, with and without a service dog, were compared using a facial expression recognition computer task while their ocular movements were measured using an eye-tracker. While the two groups did not differ in their accuracy and reaction time, results highlighted that children with ASD owning a service dog directed less attention toward areas that were not relevant to facial expression processing. They also displayed a more differentiated scanning of relevant facial features according to the displayed emotion (i.e., they spent more time on the mouth for joy than for anger, and vice versa for the eyes area). Results from the present study suggest that having a service dog and interacting with it on a daily basis may promote the development of specific visual exploration strategies for the processing of human faces.

Worldwide increased concern of the CO2 emissions has led to the replacement of coal by biomass in combustion-based power plants. However, this would cause the scarcity of fly ash, one of the most well-known rest products from coal combustion, which is used as supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) in construction sector to reduce the large environmental footprint of cement production. Seeking to find alternative SCMs, this article aims to demonstrate the viability of using bio ashes in Sweden as SCM, which, due to lack of studies validating their value, are landfilled today. According to the obtained results, bio ashes produced at pulp and paper industries have a considerably consistent chemical composition and exhibit a satisfactory pozzolanic behaviour. Nevertheless, according to the conclusions of this study, the pozzolanicity of these alternative binders is not reflected equally with respect to the most known reactivity tests for common SCMs. The results imply that although “R3” tests method infers the pozzolanic characteristics of the bio ashes in focus of this study, the “activity index test” as well as “calcium consumption test” indicate otherwise.

For security and justice professionals (e.g., police officers, lawyers, judges), the thousands of peer-reviewed articles on nonverbal communication represent important sources of knowledge. However, despite the scope of the scientific work carried out on this subject, professionals can turn to programs, methods, and approaches that fail to reflect the state of science. The objective of this article is to examine (i) concepts of nonverbal communication conveyed by these programs, methods, and approaches, but also (ii) the consequences of their use (e.g., on the life or liberty of individuals). To achieve this objective, we describe the scope of scientific research on nonverbal communication. A program (SPOT; Screening of Passengers by Observation Techniques), a method (the BAI; Behavior Analysis Interview) and an approach (synergology) that each run counter to the state of science are examined. Finally, we outline five hypotheses to explain why some organizations in the fields of security and justice are turning to pseudoscience and pseudoscientific techniques. We conclude the article by inviting these organizations to work with the international community of scholars who have scientific expertise in nonverbal communication and lie (and truth) detection to implement evidence-based practices.

First, a review of important issues that must be addressed when designing the use of geomembrane linings in canals is presented: water flow characteristics affecting exposed geomembranes and mechanisms that could cause failure of geomembrane linings. The reviewed mechanisms include: deformation of the supporting soil; uplift of geomembrane by wind, flowing water, or groundwater; mechanical damage to the geomembrane lining, e.g. by puncture or excessive stresses Recommendations are presented to address these issues. Then, design methods are presented for the sizing of canal components such as geomembrane protection, geomembrane ballasting, and geomembrane anchorage. It is shown that, in many cases, the association of geomembrane watertight lining and concrete protection layer is a successful solution.

Our paper aims to redefine the concept of stress in the context of maintaining allostasis; the term has been reserved for situations that concomitantly involve established physiological and psychological stress components. In particular, we analyze how novelty, unpredictability, threat to the ego, and low sense of control challenge allostasis. The concept of stress is then related to a state of difficulty in maintaining allostasis, rather than referring to the overall body response to the situation. This state of difficulty may be observed either in planning the strategy to deal with the situation, evaluating consequent target trajectories for the actuators, the catabolic mediators and the activators, or regulation of the biological systems through these trajectories. Catabolic mediator excesses are proposed as scaling the level of difficulty in maintaining allostasis. The excess proportion of cortisol load (EPCL) is consequently proposed to scale the stress level. A first proof-of-concept of this indicator is realized using the Physiostress dataset, by asserting that it is, as predicted from its theoretical basis, more in phase with the stress level expected from the nature of the task and participant-reported stress compared to common indicators based on the cortisol response magnitude itself.

The present article describes the one-pot synthesis of double- and single-tailed surfactants by a cascade process that involves the hydrolysis/butanolysis of pectins into butyl galacturonate monosaccharides followed by transesterification/transacetalisation processes with fatty alcohols, and subsequent aqueous basic and acid treatments. The cascade mode allows the depolymerisation to proceed more efficiently, and the purification conditions are optimised to make the production of single-tailed surfactants more manufacturable. These products in a pure form or as mixtures with alkyl glycosides resulting from butanolysis and transglycosylation of pectin-derived hexoses, exhibit attractive surface-tension properties, especially for the n-oleyl ᴅ-galactosiduronic acid products. In addition, a readily biodegradability and an absence of aquatic ecotoxicity are shown for the galacturonic acid derivatives possessing an oleyl alkyl chain at the anomeric position.

In the Dornes syncline, southern Central Iberian Zone, Portugal, the uppermost levels of the Serra do Luação Formation up to now have been considered to be of Pridoli-Lochkovian? age because they lie immediately under the Dornes Formation, which is of Pragian age and is well defined stratigraphically. New paleontological elements including benthic faunas and palynomorphs allow us to confirm that the top of the Serra do Luação Formation is securely Lochkovian, for upper Lochkovian strata are present although relatively thin. The transition from the Serra do Luação to the Dornes formations and their lithostratigraphical relationship are now clear: the terrigenous succession belongs to the Serra do Luação Formation and the limestones represent the Dornes Formation. The benthic faunas clearly have North-Gondwanan affinities.

Considerable leaching of alkali metals was documented, both in concrete samples exposed to accelerated laboratory testing and field samples. CWE allowed to quantitatively determine the free alkali metal profiles as a function of the depth. However, CWE cannot account for the changes in the paste content towards a cast surface leading to a seemingly increase in alkali metals. The μXRF allowed to distinguish paste and aggregates. It allowed thereby to determine qualitative Na and K profiles in the cement paste phase of the concrete samples. The laboratory exposed samples showed a clear leaching profile into a depth of about 15 mm after 21 weeks of exposure at 60°C. Corresponding numbers for the 12 years field exposed cube were 50-60 mm. Alkali sorption by alkali silica gel was detected using the μXRF. For the laboratory exposed samples, the prisms prepared with Portland fly ash cement leached less alkali compared to the prisms prepared with ordinary Portland cement, as expected. The leaching in the middle of the prisms estimated based on the μXRF profiles agreed rather well with the level of alkali leaching determined based on the analysis of the leachate (i.e. the water below the samples during exposure).

Le glycérol est l’un des principaux sous-produits de l’oléochimie. Un des axes de recherche pour valoriser ce co-produit demeure la production de polyglycérols et d’esters de polyglycérols, tensioactifs non ioniques. Cependant, ceux-ci sont généralement préparés industriellement dans des conditions drastiques (milieu caustique et températures élevées), générant des mélanges complexes d’oligomères de composition moléculaire mal définie. C’est dans ce contexte qu’un programme européen a été initié dans le but de préparer des échantillons standard et d’établir des corrélations structure/activité (analyse, performances, environnement) par une étude plus fondamentale sur les oligomères du glycérol et leurs esters. Notre travail a consisté à mettre au point des voies d’accès à des oligoglycérols linéaires et cycliques, de degré 2 à 5, ainsi que des monoesters et monoéthers d’acides gras, de structure parfaitement définie, en privilégiant des synthèses courtes et efficaces pour obtenir des échantillons de plusieurs grammes. Les stratégies pour les structures linéaires reposent dans un premier temps sur des synthèses convergentes impliquant l’ouverture régiospécifique d’époxydes. La préparation de dimères cycliques du glycérol repose sur des réactions d’iodocyclisation, alors que les oligomères cycliques de degré 3 à 5 ont été préparés via la condensation de deux fragments linéaires. Dans un deuxième temps, le choix de groupes protecteurs orthogonaux et de réactions sélectives a permis de synthétiser une gamme de molécules amphiphiles de structure définie, en faisant varier aussi bien la tête polaire (nombre d’unités glycérol impliquées) que la chaîne hydrophobe (longueur, insaturation, position sur la tête polaire, liaison chimique ester ou éther).

Several studies have emphasized the association between socioeconomic status (SES) and inadequate response of the biological stress system. However, other factors related to SES are rarely considered, such as cultural values, social norms, organization, language and communication skills, which raises the need to investigate cross-country differences in stress response. Although some studies have shown differences in cortisol levels between immigrants and natives, there is no cross-country evidence regarding cortisol levels in country-native elders. This is particularly important given the high prevalence of stress-related disorders across nations during aging. The current study examined basal diurnal and reactive cortisol levels in healthy older adults living in two different countries.Salivary cortisol of 260 older adults from Canada and Brazil were analyzed. Diurnal cortisol was measured in saliva samples collected at home throughout two working days at awakening, 30 min after waking, 1400 h, 1600 h and before bedtime. Cortisol reactivity was assessed in response to the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) in both populations.Our results showed that even under similar health status, psychological and cognitive characteristics, Brazilian elders exhibited higher basal and stress-induced cortisol secretion compared to the Canadian participants.These findings suggest that country context may modulate cortisol secretion and could impact the population health.

Background : A few weeks ago and for the first time in 20 years, US health officials have lowered the threshold for lead (Pb) poisoning from 10 to 5 g/dL in blood, but only in young children. However, elders are also a high-risk population when considering adverse effects of lead exposure. The association between low-level lead exposure and cognitive variability is well documented in elderly people, e.g. in the domain of attention and memory. Toxicokinetic studies have also demonstrated that the skeleton is the site of storage for around 95% of lead in the adult human body, resulting in a release of lead in blood in elderly people with bone demineralization. One potential mechanism explaining adverse health effects of lead exposure stands in its endocrine disrupting function, and a recent study has found significant associations in children between low-lead levels and cortisol reactivity to the cold pressure task. We hypothesized that this association between lead exposure and hypothalamo–pituitary–adrenal functioning could be observed in elders from the general population. Methods : Pb levels were determined from blood samples of 78 elderly individuals (mean age = 58.37, SE = 4.01) without previous occupational Pb exposure. Diurnal cortisol was measured using salivary cortisol samples collected at home over two working days at awakening, 30 min after waking, 14: 00 h, 16: 00 h and before bedtime (∼10 pm) periods. Salivary cortisol reactivity was assessed in response to the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Results : All participants showed blood Pb levels below the threshold limit recommended by the CDC with a mean Pb of 2.6 g/dL, SE = 1.4. No association was found between lead exposure and diurnal cortisol activity (n=75, r= − 0.02, p=0.98). In 2008, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) announced that in the next few decades, it will be essential to study the various biological, psychological and social “signatures” of mental disorders. Along with this new “signature” approach to mental health disorders, modifications of DSM were introduced. One major modification consisted of incorporating a dimensional approach to mental disorders, which involved analyzing, using a transnosological approach, various factors that are commonly observed across different types of mental disorders. Although this new methodology led to interesting discussions of the DSM5 working groups, it has not been incorporated in the last version of the DSM5. Consequently, the NIMH launched the “Research Domain Criteria” (RDoC) framework in order to provide new ways of classifying mental illnesses based on dimensions of observable behavioral and neurobiological measures. The NIMH emphasizes that it is important to consider the benefits of dimensional measures from the perspective of psychopathology and environmental influences, and it is also important to build these dimensions on neurobiological data. The goal of this paper is to present the perspectives of DSM5 and RDoC to the science of mental health disorders and the impact of this debate on the future of human stress research. The second goal is to present the “Signature Bank” developed by the Institut Universitaire en Santé Mentale de Montréal (IUSMM) that has been developed in line with a dimensional and transnosological approach to mental illness.
