A representative system of fault and block dislocations in the Sea of Japan segment of the continent–ocean transition zone, identified using space-based geological data and a set of available geomorphological, geological, and geophysical materials, allow the eponymous Late Paleozoic mega-arch to be constructed. The ring form, duration, and scales of basite, acidic magmatism, and the presence of geological and geophysical signs of mantle diapirism associate the main features of its structure and development with plume activity. The geological prehistory, plume tectonics, and periodic inversions of the geodynamic regime determined the direction and character of destructive transformations of the continental margin in the Early Mesozoic and Middle and Late Cenozoic, and the specific character of the region evolution in general. Features of the inherited development of the structural plan include the preservation of the granite core of the mega-arch, associated with the underwater Yamato rise having a continental type of crust, in the geometric center of the Sea of Japan basin; the presence of radial-concentric hypsometric and structural-magmatic zonation; and the relict nature of many other underwater rises. The absence of compensatory collision–accretion dislocations in the east of Honshu Island and on the island arc slope of the adjacent deep-sea trench, the weak variability of strikes of dry land–sea tectonic marks through faults in satellite images, the preservation of the paleoarch structural elements, and other data contradict ideas about large horizontal movements of lithospheric blocks within the Sea of Japan segment of the Eurasia–Pacific Ocean transition zone.

The ancient cores of continents (cratons) are underlain by mantle keels-volumes of melt-depleted, mechanically resistant, buoyant and diamondiferous mantle up to 350 kilometres thick, which have remained isolated from the hotter and denser convecting mantle for more than two billion years. Mantle keels formed only in the Early Earth (approximately 1.5 to 3.5 billion years ago in the Precambrian eon); they have no modern analogues1-4. Many keels show layering in terms of degree of melt depletion5-7. The origin of such layered lithosphere remains unknown and may be indicative of a global tectonics mode (plate rather than plume tectonics) operating in the Early Earth. Here we investigate the possible origin of mantle keels using models of oceanic subduction followed by arc-continent collision at increased mantle temperatures (150-250 degrees Celsius higher than the present-day values). We demonstrate that after Archaean plate tectonics began, the hot, ductile, positively buoyant, melt-depleted sublithospheric mantle layer located under subducting oceanic plates was unable to subduct together with the slab. The moving slab left behind craton-scale emplacements of viscous protokeel beneath adjacent continental domains. Estimates of the thickness of this sublithospheric depleted mantle show that this mechanism was efficient at the time of the major statistical maxima of cratonic lithosphere ages. Subsequent conductive cooling of these protokeels would produce mantle keels with their low modern temperatures, which are suitable for diamond formation. Precambrian subduction of oceanic plates with highly depleted mantle is thus a prerequisite for the formation of thick layered lithosphere under the continents, which permitted their longevity and survival in subsequent plate tectonic processes.

The interplay of plume and plate tectonics is discussed with reference to well-documented late Paleozoic and Mesozoic–Cenozoic structures. The considered issues include models of lower mantle plumes; the typical case of the Hawaii plume; plate motions in the Pacific basin under the effect of plume activity and subduction processes; the role of plumes in the breakup of continents and rifting for the cases of the East African rifts and Gondwana breakup; large continental igneous provinces of Siberia and Tarim, with meimechites and kimberlites; and the formation of large granitic batholiths and related metallogeny. The study contains several points of novelty: integrated use of lower mantle seismic tomography and satellite altimetry data on gravity patterns; correlation of plume heat with plate velocities assuming that some plumes may dissolve in the asthenosphere; and correlation of rifting with compression and extension zones.

Plate tectonics describes the horizontal motions of lithospheric plates, the Earth’s outer shell, and interactions among them across the Earth’s surface. Since the establishment of the theory of plate tectonics about half a century ago, considerable debates have remained regarding the driving forces for plate motion. The early “Bottom up” view, i.e., the convecting mantle-driven mechanism, states that mantle plumes originating from the core-mantle boundary act at the base of plates, accelerating continental breakup and driving plate motion. Toward the present, however, the “Top down” idea is more widely accepted, according to which the negative buoyancy of oceanic plates is the dominant driving force for plate motion, and the subducting slabs control surface tectonics and mantle convection. In this regard, plate tectonics is also known as subduction tectonics. “Top down” tectonics has received wide supports from numerous geological and geophysical observations. On the other hand, recent studies indicate that the acceleration/deceleration of individual plates over the million-year timescale may reflect the effects of mantle plumes. It is also suggested that surface uplift and subsidence within stable cratonic areas are correlated with plume-related magmatic activities over the hundred-million-year timescale. On the global scale, the cyclical supercontinent assembly and breakup seem to be coupled with superplume activities during the past two billion years. These correlations over various spatial and temporal scales indicate the close relationship and intensive interactions between plate tectonics and plume tectonics throughout the history of the Earth and the considerable influence of plumes on plate motion. Indeed, we can acquire a comprehensive understanding of the driving forces for plate motion and operation mechanism of the Earth’s dynamic system only through joint analyses and integrated studies on plate tectonics and plume tectonics.

A progress of geodynamic processes in Early Precambrian of the Ukrainian Shield (USh) has been considered. Based on the known data on plate- and plume-tectonic processes of Phanerozoic the following problems have been investigated: 1) what trajectories of material flows in Precambrian mantle might occur; 2) what was an interaction of plumes and regular mantle convection; 3) the time of existence of plumes and are they permanent or pulsating; 4) the time of beginning of Precambrian geodynamic processes comparable with Phanerozoic ones. It has been shown taking as examples the Ukrainian and the Canadian shields that present-day thermochemical and dynamic processes do not completely delete geological-geophysical features of ancient zones of subduction and plumes in solid lithosphere and adjacent areas of mesosphere preserved since Early Precambrian. The Earth crust of these shields was intensely reprocessed by granitization and basification comparable with activity of hot points that were more developed than now. Within the area of USh these processes were the most active in the interval 2,0±0,2 Ga. Two of stages of geodynamic evolution of the USh within the limits of the Bug-Middle Dnieper-Periazov and Volyn-Podolian parts, superimposed in time, have been studied. Comparison of materials of geologic-geophysical mapping of this territory with the data of deep seismic sounding (DSS) and seismography allows refining geodynamic model of the Volyn-Podolian part of the USh along the trans-sect Eurobridge-97 composed earlier. Tectonophysical justification of necessity to include pulsating plumes with which formation of the Korsun-Novomyrgorod and Korosten plutons of gabbro -anorthosites and rapakivi was particularly associated to geodynamic process has been given. Comparison of models of subduction-collision processes within the limits of the USh and the Superior Province (Canada) has shown that independent approaches to solving geodynamic problems give relative results. The materials obtained on the USh do not exhaust all the possible episodes of its Neoarhean –Proterozoic geodynamic development. Trailing of super-modern DSS geo-travers along the axial part of the USh is required for their study.

Alkaline magmatism has occurred since 2.7–3Ga and its abundance has continuously increased throughout the Earth’s history. Alkaline rocks appeared on the Earth with changes in the geodynamic regime of our planet, i.e., when plume tectonics was supplemented by plate tectonics. Global scale development of plate tectonics at the Archean–Proterozoic boundary initiated subduction of already significantly oxidized oceanic crust enriched in volatiles and largescale mantle metasomatism caused the formation of enriched reservoirs as sources of alkaline and carbonatite magmatism. Study of metasomatized mantle material showed the occurrence of traces of primary carbonatite melts, which are strongly enriched in rare elements, according to ionmicroprobe analyses. The results obtained allowed us to propose a new two-stage genetic model for Ca-rich carbonatites including (1) metasomatic wehrlitization and carbonatization of mantle material and (2) partial melting of wehrlitized mantle with formation of carbonaterich melts or three immiscible liquids (at high alkali contents), i.e., silicate, carbonatitic, and sulfide (at high sulfur activity).

Decoding the seismic-velocity structure of the earth crust and the upper mantle on the basis of deep seismic sounding according to the Georift-2013 program along the Pripyat and Dnieper troughs along the Nesvizh-Bragin-ChernigovPoltava profile allows one to develop the ideas about the structure and Hercynian synriftic geodynamics of the contiguous adjacent structures of the Pripyat-Dnieper-Donets aulacogene. The abnormally powerful regional high-speed body, which is interpreted as a rift pillow, established in the lower crust under the Dnieper graben, is one of the indicators of manifestation of active plume tectonics in the process of Hercynian rifting in this segment of the aulacogen PDD. In the Pripyat segment, separated from the Dnieper segment by echeloned deep structures in the zone of the Bragin-Loevsky saddle, the structure of the crust– mantle boundary differs in comparison with the Dnieper segment by a lower level of the Moho surface; it is subhorizontal in the cross sections of the Pripyat paleorift. There were no active plume-tectonic events in scale.

Subject. The ideas of plume tectonics became active and developing only several years later than the theory of plate tectonics. But in the Urals, the question of plume tectonics, contrary to plate tectonics, was not raised, with rare exceptions, until the latest decade. It is explained by great difficulties in revelation of plumes in any ancient foldbelt, because seismic tomography is not applicable, and magmatic complexes are partly covered by younger sediments, partly eroded, and, additionally, undergone distortion, connected with continental break-ups and drift, subduction and fold-and thrust deformations. Materials and methods. However in recent years, among the magmatic complexes of the Urals (mostly in its western areas), Pay-Khoy and Novaya Zemlya, thanks to precise definition of magmatic formations ages, study of their geodynamically conditioned petrochemistry and their correlation with other regions, the author identified ten levels of probable manifestations of plume/superplume events. Results. It is assumed that in the modern Urals the relics of the following plumes: Navysh (Lower Riphean), Mashak (Middle Riphean), Arsha and Kiryabinka (Terminal Riphean), Mankhambo (Cambrian), Kidryas (Lower-Middle Ordovician, Ushat (Late Ordovician-Lower Silurian), Kola-Dniepr (Devonian), Stepninsk (Permian), Ural-Siberian (Lower-Middle Triassic) had remained.

When plate tectonics began on the Earth has been long debated and here we argue this topic based on the records of Earth-Moon geology and asteroid belt to conclude that the onset of plate tectonics was during the middle Hadean (4.37–4.20 Ga). The trigger of the initiation of plate tectonics is the ABEL Bombardment, which delivered oceanic and atmospheric components on a completely dry reductive Earth, originally comprised of enstatite chondrite-like materials. Through the accretion of volatiles, shock metamorphism processed with vaporization of both CI chondrite and supracrustal rocks at the bombarded location, and significant recrystallization went through under wet conditions, caused considerable eclogitization in the primordial continents composed of felsic upper crust of 21 km thick anorthosite, and 50 km or even thicker KREEP lower crust. Eclogitization must have yielded a powerful slab-pull force to initiate plate tectonics in the middle Hadean. Another important factor is the size of the bombardment. By creating Pacific Ocean class crater by 1000 km across impactor, rigid plate operating stagnant lid tectonics since the early Hadean was severely destroyed, and oceanic lithosphere was generated to have bi-modal lithosphere on the Earth to enable the operation of plate tectonics. Considering the importance of the ABEL Bombardment event which initiated plate tectonics including the appearance of ocean and atmosphere, we propose that the Hadean Eon can be subdivided into three periods: (1) early Hadean (4.57–4.37 Ga), (2) middle Hadean (4.37–4.20 Ga), and (3) late Hadean (4.20–4.00 Ga). Evidence for episodic crustal growth extending back to the Hadean has recently prompted a number of numerically based geodynamic models that incorporate cyclic changes from stagnant lid to mobile lid tectonics. A large part of the geologic record is missing for the times at which several of these cycles are inferred to have taken place. The cratons, however, are likely to retain important clues relating to similar cycles developed in the Mesoarchean and Neoarchean. Widespread acceptance of a form of plate tectonics by ∼3.2 Ga is not at odds with the sporadic occurrence of stagnant lid tectonics after this time. The concept of scale as applied to cratons, mantle plumes and Neoarchean volcanic arcs are likely to provide important constraints on future models of Earth's geodynamic evolution. The Superior Province will provide some of the most concrete evidence in this regard given that its constituent blocks may have been locked into a stagnant lid relatively soon after their formation and then assembled in the next global plate tectonic interval. Perceived complexities associated with inferred mantle plume – volcanic arc associations in the Superior Province and other cratons may be related to an over estimation of plume size. A possible stagnant lid episode between ∼2.9 Ga and ∼2.8 Ga is identified by previously unexplained lapses in volcanism on cratons, including the Kaapvaal, Yilgarn and Superior Province cratons. If real, then mantle dynamics associated with this episode likely eliminated any contemporaneous mantle plume incubation sites, which has important implications for widespread plumes developed at ∼2.7 Ga and favours a shallow mantle source in the transition zone. The Superior Province provides a uniquely preserved local proxy for this global event and could serve as the basis for detailed numerical models in the future.

The paper is focused on the evolution of the Earth starting with the planetary accretion and differentiation of the primordial material (similar in composition to CI chondrites) into the core and mantle and the formation of the Moon as a result of the impact of the Earth with a smaller cosmic body. The features of the Hadean eon (ca. 4500–4000 Ma) are described in detail. Frequent meteorite–asteroid bombardments which the Earth experienced in the Hadean could have caused the generation of mafic/ultramafic primary magmas. These magmas also differentiated to produce some granitic magmas, from which zircons crystallized. The repeated meteorite bombardments destroyed the protocrust, which submerged into the mantle to remelt, leaving refractory zircons, indicators of the Early Earth’s geologic conditions, behind. The mantle convection that started in the Archean could possibly be responsible for the Earth’s subsequent endogenous evolution. Long-living deep-seated mantle plumes could have promoted the generation of basalt–komatiitic crust, which, thickening, could have submerged into the mantle as a result of sagduction, where it remelted. Partial melting of the thick crust, leaving eclogite as a residue, could have yielded tonalite–trondhjemite–granodiorite (TTG) melts. TTG rocks are believed to compose the Earth’s protocrust. Banded iron bodies, the only mineral deposits of that time, were produced in the oceans that covered the Earth. This environment, recognized as LID tectonics combined with plume tectonics, probably existed on the Earth prior to the transitional period, which was marked by a series of new geologic processes and led to a modern-style tectonics, involving plate tectonics and plume tectonics mechanisms, by 2 Ga. The transitional period was likely to be initiated at about 3.4 Ga, with the segregation of outer and inner cores, which terminated by 3.1 Ga. Other rocks series (calc-alkaline volcanic and intrusive) rather than TTGs were produced at that time. Beginning from 3.4–3.3 Ga, mineral deposits became more diverse; noble and siderophile metal occurrences were predominant among ore deposits. Carbonatites, hosting rare-metal mineralization, could have formed only by 2.0 Ga. From 3.1 to 2.7 Ga, there was a period of “small-plate” tectonics and first subduction and spreading processes, which resulted in the first supercontinent by 2.7 Ga. Its amalgamation indicates the start of superplume–supercontinent cycles. Between 2.7 and 2.0 Ga, the D″ layer formed at the core–mantle interface. It became a kind of thermal regulator for the ascending already tholeiitic mantle plume magmas. All deep-seated layers of the Earth and large low-velocity shear provinces, called mantle hot fields, partially melted enriched EM-I and EM-II mantles, and the depleted recent asthenosphere mantle, which is parental for midocean-ridge basalts, were finally generated by 2 Ga. Therefore, an interaction of all Earth’s layers began from that time.

The great mantle plume debate (GPD) has been going on for ∼15 years (Foulger and Natland, 2003; Anderson, 2004; Niu, 2005; Davies, 2005; Foulger, 2005; Campbell, 2005; Campbell and Davies, 2006), centered on whether mantle plumes exist as a result of Earth’s cooling or whether their existence is purely required for convenience in explaining certain Earth phenomena (Niu, 2005). Despite the mounting evidence that many of the so-called plumes may be localized melting anomalies, the debate is likely to continue. We recognize that the slow progress of the debate results from communication difficulties. Many debaters may not truly appreciate (1) what the mantle plume hypothesis actually is, and (2) none of the petrological, geochemical and geophysical methods widely used can actually provide smoking-gun evidence for or against mantle plume hypothesis. In this short paper, we clarify these issues, and elaborate a geologically effective approach to test the hypothesis. According to the mantle plume hypothesis, a thermal mantle plume must originate from the thermal boundary layer at the core-mantle boundary (CMB), and a large mantle plume head is required to carry the material from the deep mantle to the surface. The plume head product in ocean basins is the oceanic plateau, which is a lithospheric terrane that is large (1000’s km across), thick (>200 km), shallow (2–4 km high above the surrounding seafloors), buoyant (∼1% less dense than the surrounding lithosphere), and thus must be preserved in the surface geology (Niu et al., 2003). The Hawaiian volcanism has been considered as the surface expression of a type mantle plume, but it does not seem to have a (known) plume head product. If this is true, the Hawaiian mantle plume in particular and the mantle plume hypothesis in general must be questioned. Therefore, whether there is an oceanic plateau-like product for the Hawaiian volcanism is key to testing the mantle plume hypothesis, and the Kamchatka-Okhotsk Sea basement is the best candidate to find out if it is indeed the Hawaiian mantle plume head product or not (Niu et al., 2003; Niu, 2004).

Even if plate tectonics was a truly significant unifying theory that began to give sense to a series of different geological observations, plate motions were considered scattered. The advent of space geodesy confirmed and greatly refined the models of plate kinematics, allowing also to study the motion of the lithosphere with respect to the inner layers of the Earth. Switching from the no net rotation to the hotspot reference frames, plate motion assumes coherence with a mean global westward drift of the lithosphere with respect to the mantle. However, the driving forces of plate tectonics are still under investigation and space geodesy may provide fundamental tools to develop comprehensive models which can take into account the contributes of mantle density gradients and astronomical forces, as Earth’s rotation and tides. This paper is dedicated to Prof. Michele Caputo who was a pioneer in measuring the misalignment of the tidal bulge with respect to the Earth–Moon gravitational alignment. The misplaced mass in excess may account for the westerly directed torque of the lithosphere relative to the mantle. Local GPS networks and satellite observations are providing new insights on plate boundary tectonics and allow unravelling the evolution of the interplay between the shallow brittle upper crust and the underlying visco-plastic lower crust, which is deforming in a steady state regime without releasing relevant seismic waves. Along active tectonic areas, zones marked by low strain rates are suitable to store larger energy, subsequently dissipated during the coseismic stage. GPS and InSAR observations have widely increased the capability to monitor the spatial and temporal variations of deformation. The coseismic deformation pattern suggests a different mechanism of energy store and release, mainly gravitational in extensional tectonic settings and essentially elastic in strike-slip and contractional tectonic settings. The increasing details provided by future dense and low-cost geodetic networks will allow to detect reliable deformation transients and new insight on seismic precursors.

During Solar System condensation, the early Earth formed through planetesimal accretion, including collision of a Mars-sized asteroid. These processes rapidly increased the overall thermal budget and partial fusion of the planet. Aided by heat supplied by radioactivity and infall of the Fe-Ni core, devolatilization and chemical-density stratification attended planetary growth. After the thermal maximum at ∼4.4 Ga, terrestrial temperatures gradually declined as an early Hadean magma ocean solidified. By ∼4.3–4.2 Ga, H2O oceans + a dense CO2-rich atmosphere blanketed the terrestrial surface. Near-surface temperatures had fallen well below the low-P solidi of dry peridotite, basalt, and granite, ∼1300, ∼1120, and ∼950 °C, respectively. At less than half their melting T, rocky materials existed as thin lithospheric platelets in the surficial Hadean Earth. Upper mantle stagnant-lid convection may have operated locally, but was rapidly overwhelmed by heat build-up-induced asthenospheric circulation, rifting and subduction, because massive heat transfer required vigorous mantle overturn in the early, hot planet. Bottom-up mantle overturn, involving abundant plume ascent, brought deep-seated heat to the surface. It decreased over time as cooling, plate enlargement, and top-down plate descent increased. Thickening, lateral extension, and contraction typified the post-Hadean lithosphere. Geologic evolutionary stages included: (a) ∼4.5–4.4 Ga, the magma ocean solidified, generating ephemeral, ductile platelets; (b) ∼4.4–2.7 Ga, small oceanic and continental plates were produced, then were destroyed by mantle return flow before ∼4.0 Ga; eventually, continental material began to accumulate as largely subsea, sialic crust-capped lithospheric collages; (c) ∼2.7–1.0 Ga, progressive suturing of old shields and younger orogenic belts led to cratonal plates typified by emerging continental freeboard, intense sedimentary differentiation, and episodic glaciation during transpolar plate drift; temporally limited stagnant-lid mantle convection occurred beneath growing supercontinents; (d) ∼1.0 Ga-present, laminar-flowing mantle cells are capped by giant, stately moving plates. Near-restriction of komatiitic lavas to the Archean, and formation of multicycle sediments, ophiolite complexes ± alkaline igneous rocks, and high-pressure/ultrahigh-pressure (HP/UHP) metamorphic belts in youngest Proterozoic and Phanerozoic orogens reflect increasing density of cool oceanic plates, but decreasing subductability of enlarging, more buoyant continental plates. Attending assembly of supercontinents, negative buoyancy of thickening oceanic lithosphere began to control the overturn of suboceanic mantle as cold, top-down convection. The scales and dynamics of hot asthenospheric upwelling versus plate foundering and mantle return flow (bottom-up plume ascent versus top-down plate subduction) evolved gradually, due to planetary cooling. After accretion of the Earth, heat transfer through mantle convection has resulted in the existence of surficial rocky plates or platelets, and vigorous, lithosphere-coupled mantle overturn since ∼4.4 Ga. Thus plate-tectonic processes have typified the Earth’s thermal history since Hadean time.

The paper considers the conditions and mechanisms of the formation of linear volcanic structures in the Brazil Basin, South Atlantic. Among these objects, those related to the ascent of deep mantle plumes predominate. It is shown that the ascent of melts from plume sources leads to the formation of (a) hot spot tracks in the form of linear volcanic ridges and (b) active hot lines in the form of submarine mountain chains with trends differing from those of hot spot tracks and with a more variable character of the age distribution of volcanic rocks. Fault tectonics affects the character of plume activity. In addition, plume material from a hot spot area is dragged by a moving plate as a flow or a sublithospheric lens, which leads to the long-term existence of particular independent segments of linear structures and sometimes to late volcanism reactivation within their limits. Decompression melting of the asthenospheric mantle in zones where thin lithosphere undergoes tension causes the formation of passive hot lines. The main mantle source for the considered volcanic rocks was a mixture of DMM and HIMU mantle components, with the latter abruptly dominating. In marginal oceanic regions, the EM1 component is also present (the EM2 component is found more rarely) within fragments of tectonically delaminated continental mantle that was trapped by the oceanic mantle during the breakup of Gondwana.

Geological–geochemical evidence point towards higher mantle potential temperature and a different type of tectonics (global plume-lid tectonics) in the early Earth (>3.2 Ga) compared to the present day (global plate tectonics). In order to investigate tectono-magmatic processes associated with plume-lid tectonics and crustal growth under hotter mantle temperature conditions, we conduct a series of 3D high-resolution magmatic-thermomechanical models with the finite-difference code I3ELVIS. No external plate tectonic forces are applied to isolate 3D effects of various plume–lithosphere and crust–mantle interactions. Results of the numerical experiments show two distinct phases in coupled crust–mantle evolution: (1) a longer (80–100 Myr) and relatively quiet ‘growth phase’ which is marked by growth of crust and lithosphere, followed by (2) a short (∼20 Myr) and catastrophic ‘removal phase’, where unstable parts of the crust and mantle lithosphere are removed by eclogitic dripping and later delamination. This modelling suggests that the early Earth plume-lid tectonic regime followed a pattern of episodic growth and removal also called episodic overturn with a periodicity of ∼100 Myr.

Comparing the early Earth to the present day, geological–geochemical evidence points towards higher mantle potential temperature and a different type of tectonics. In order to investigate possible changes in Precambrian tectonic styles, we conduct 3D high-resolution petrological–thermomechanical numerical modelling experiments for oceanic plate subduction under an active continental margin at a wide range of mantle potential temperature T P (∆ T P = 0 − 250 K, compared to present day conditions). At present day mantle temperatures (∆ T P = 0 K), results of numerical experiments correspond to modern-style subduction, whereas at higher temperature conditions important systematic changes in the styles of both lithospheric deformation and mantle convection occur. For ∆ T P = 50 − 100 K a regime of dripping subduction emerges which is still very similar to present day subduction but is characterised by frequent dripping from the slab tip and a loss of coherence of the slab, which suggests a close relationship between dripping subduction and episodic subduction. At further increasing ∆ T P = 150 − 200 K dripping subduction is observed together with unstable dripping lithosphere, which corresponds to a transitional regime. For ∆ T P = 250 K, presumably equivalent to early Archean, the dominating tectonic style is characterised by small-scale mantle convection, unstable dripping lithosphere, thick basaltic crust and small plates. Even though the initial setup is still defined by present day subduction, this final regime shows many characteristics of plume-lid tectonics. Transition between the two end-members, plume-lid tectonics and plate tectonics, happens gradually and at intermediate temperatures elements of both tectonic regimes are present. We conclude, therefore, that most likely no abrupt geodynamic regime transition point can be specified in the Earth's history and its global geodynamic regime gradually evolved over time from plume-lid tectonics into modern style plate tectonics.

The relationship between plate- and plume-tectonics is considered in view of the growth and breakdown of supercontinents, active rifting, the formation of passive volcanic-type continental margins, and the origin of time-progressive volcanic chains on oceanic and continental plates. The mantle wind phenomenon is described, as well as its effect on plume morphology and anisotropy of the ambient mantle. The interaction of plumes and mid-ocean ridges is discussed. The principles and problems of plume activity analysis in subduction- and collision-related foldbelts are considered and illustrated with examples.

As we continue searching for exoplanets, we wonder if life and technological species capable of communicating with us exists on any of them. As geoscientists, we can also wonder how important is the presence or absence of plate tectonics for the evolution of technological species. This essay considers this question, focusing on tectonically active rocky (silicate) planets, like Earth, Venus, and Mars. The development of technological species on Earth provides key insights for understanding evolution on exoplanets, including the likely role that plate tectonics may play. An Earth-sized silicate planet is likely to experience several tectonic styles over its lifetime, as it cools and its lithosphere thickens, strengthens, and becomes denser. These include magma ocean, various styles of stagnant lid, and perhaps plate tectonics. Abundant liquid water favors both life and plate tectonics. Ocean is required for early evolution of diverse single-celled organisms, then colonies of cells which specialized further to form guts, appendages, and sensory organisms up to the complexity of fish (central nervous system, appendages, eyes). Large expanses of dry land also begin in the ocean, today produced above subduction zones in juvenile arcs and by their coalescence to form continents, although it is not clear that plate tectonics was required to create continental crust on Earth. Dry land of continents is required for further evolution of technological species, where modification of appendages for grasping and manipulating, and improvement of eyes and central nervous system could be perfected. These bioassets allowed intelligent creatures to examine the night sky and wonder, the beginning of abstract thinking, including religion and science. Technology arises from the exigencies of daily living such as tool-making, agriculture, clothing, and weapons, but the pace of innovation accelerates once it is allied with science. Finally, the importance of plate tectonics for developing a technological species is examined via a thought experiment using two otherwise identical planets: one with plate tectonics and the other without. A planet with oceans, continents, and plate tectonics maximizes opportunities for speciation and natural selection, whereas a similar planet without plate tectonics provides fewer such opportunities. Plate tectonics exerts environmental pressures that drive evolution without being capable of extinguishing all life. Plate tectonic processes such as the redistribution of continents, growth of mountain ranges, formation of land bridges, and opening and closing of oceans provide a continuous but moderate environmental pressure that stimulates populations to adapt and evolve. Plate tectonics may not be needed in order for life to begin, but evolution of technological species is favored on planets with oceans, continents, plate tectonics, and intermittently clear night sky.

Mantle flow beneath mid-ocean ridges was thought to respond passively to plate motions. Analysis of seismic data from ridges reveals a skew between the directions of plate motion and mantle flow, implying mantle flow may stress the plates.

Paradoxically, the lists of “proxies” of both plate- and plume-related settings are devoid of even a mention of the high-grade metamorphic rocks (granulite, amphibolite and high-temperature eclogite facies). However, the granulite-gneiss belts and areas which contain these rocks, have a regional distribution in both the Precambrian and the Phanerozoic records. The origin and evolution of the granulite-gneiss belts correspond to the activity of plumes expressed in vigorous heating of the continental crust; intraplate magmatism; formation of rift depressions filled with sediments, juvenile lavas, and pyroclastic flow deposits; and metamorphism of lower and middle crustal complexes under conditions of granulite and high-temperature amphibolite facies that spreads over the fill of rift depressions also. Granulite-gneiss complexes of the East European Craton form one of the main components of the large oval intracontinental tectonic terranes of regional or continental rank. Inclusion of the granulite-gneiss complexes from Eastern Europe, North and South America, Africa, India, China and Australia in discussion of the problem indicated in the title to this paper, suggests consideration of a significant change in existing views on the relations between the plate- and plume-tectonic processes in geological history, as well as in supercontinent assembly and decay. The East European and North American cratons are fragments of the long-lived supercontinent Lauroscandia. After its appearance at ~2.8 Ga, the crust of this supercontinent evolved under the influence of the sequence of powerful mantle plumes (superplumes) up to ~0.85 Ga. During this time Lauroscandia was subjected to rifting, partial breakup and the following reconstruction of the continent. The processes of plate-tectonic type (rifting with the transition to spreading and closing of the short-lived ocean with subduction) within Lauroscandia were controlled by the superplumes. Revision of the nature of the granulite-gneiss complexes has led to a fundamental new understanding of: a more important role than envisaged previously for mantle-plume processes in the juvenile additions to the continental crust, especially during the Neoarchaean-Proterozoic; the existence of the supercontinent Lauroscandia from ~2.80 to 0.85 Ga; the leading role of mantle plumes in the interaction of plate- and plume-tectonics in the Neoarchaean-Proterozoic history of Lauroscandia and perhaps of the continental crust as a whole. We propose that the evolution of the geodynamic settings of the Earth’s crust origin can be represented as a spiral sequence: the interaction of mantle-plume processes and embryonic microplate tectonics during the Palaeo-Mezoarchaean (~3.8–2.8 Ga) → plume-tectonics and local plume-driven plate-tectonics (~2.80–0.55 Ga) → Phanerozoic plate tectonics along with a reduced role of mantle plumes.

Advances in global seismic tomography have increasingly motivated identification of subducted lithosphere in Earth's deep mantle, creating novel opportunities to link plate tectonics and mantle evolution. Chief among those is the quest for a robust subduction reference frame, wherein the mantle assemblage of subducted lithosphere is used to reconstruct past surface tectonics in an absolute framework anchored in the deep Earth. However, the associations heretofore drawn between lower mantle structure and past subduction have been qualitative and conflicting, so the very assumption of a correlation has yet to be quantitatively corroborated. Here we show that a significant, time‐depth progressive correlation can be drawn between reconstructed subduction zones of the last 130 Myr and positive S wave velocity anomalies at 600–2300 km depth, but that further correlation between greater times and depths is not presently demonstrable. Plate tectonics is a unique feature of Earth, and it plays a dominant role in transporting Earth's internally generated heat. It also governs the nature, shape, and the motion of the surface of Earth. The initiation of plate tectonics on Earth has been difficult to establish observationally, and modeling of the plate breaking process has not consistently accounted for the nature of the preplate tectonic Earth. We have performed numerical simulations of heat transport in the preplate tectonic Earth to understand the transition to plate tectonic behavior. This period of time is dominated by volcanic heat transport called the heat pipe mode of planetary cooling. These simulations of Earth's mantle include heat transport by melting and melt segregation (volcanism), Newtonian temperature-dependent viscosity, and internal heating. We show that when heat pipes are active, the lithosphere thickens and lithospheric isotherms are kept flat by the solidus. Both of these effects act to suppress plate tectonics. As volcanism wanes, conduction begins to control lithospheric thickness, and large slopes arise at the base of the lithosphere. This produces large lithospheric stress and focuses it on the thinner regions of the lithosphere resulting in plate breaking events.

The difficulties and contradictions of the classical concept of plate tectonics are discussed. It was shown the postulate of rigid plates and Euler’s theorem on the motion of rigid body with one fixed point, which is the basis of the kinematic description of plate tectonics, cannot be universally applied, e.g., to the analysis of Cretaceous reconstructions of the North Atlantic and Arctic. The second postulate of the existence of lithosphere as separate and distinct tectonic plates, which is equivalent to the assumption on the continuity of all plate boundaries, is not satisfied. This study provides a generalization of the theory of classical plate tectonics, in which plates are treated as deformable bodies, the concept of deformable plate tectonics. The study also discusses a new regional geodynamic model for the Cretaceous and Cenozoic evolution of lithosphere beneath Arctic and Northeastern Asia. The model is based on the assumption of a laterally extended convection cell in the upper mantle driven by a conveyor-belt-like process of subduction of the Pacific plate. The proposed model provides a physically sound explanation for the standard tectonomagmatic processes, such as island arc roll-back and opening of back-arc basins, formation of continental rift zones and igneous provinces at great distances (over 1000 km) from subduction zones, etc.

In the early model of plate tectonics, the plate was depicted as a passive raft floating on the convecting mantle and carried away by the mantle flow. At the same time, ridge push at spreading boundaries and drag force exerted by the mantle on the base of lithosphere were described as the dominant driving forces of plate movements. However, in recent studies of plate tectonics, it is generally accepted that the primary force driving plate motion is slab pull beneath subduction zones rather than other forces driven by mantle convection. The current view asserts that the density contrast between dense oceanic lithosphere and underlying asthenosphere is the substance of slab pull. The greater density of oceanic slab allows it to sink deeper into mantle at trenches by gravitational pull, which provides a dominant driving force for plate motion. Based on this plate tectonics development, this study investigated the contents of plate tectonics in high school Earth Science textbooks and how they have been depicted for the last few decades. Results showed that the early explanation of plate movement driven by mantle convection has been consistently highlighted in almost all high school textbooks since the 5th curriculum, whereas most introductory college textbooks rectified the early theory of plate movement and introduced a newly accepted theory in revised edition. Therefore, we suggest that the latest theory of plate tectonics be included in high school textbooks so that students get updated with recent understanding of it in a timely manner.

We present three-dimensional deep-mantle laboratory models of a compositional plume within the vicinity of a buoyancy-driven subducting plate with a fixed trailing edge. We modelled front plumes (in the mantle wedge), rear plumes (beneath the subducting plate) and side plumes with slab/plume systems of buoyancy flux ratio spanning a range from 2 to 100 that overlaps the ratios in nature of 0.2–100. This study shows that 1) rising side and front plumes can be dragged over thousands of kilometres into the mantle wedge, 2) flattening of rear plumes in the trench-normal direction can be initiated 700 km away from the trench, and a plume material layer of lesser density and viscosity can ultimately almost entirely underlay a retreating slab after slab/plume impact, 3) while side and rear plumes are not tilted until they reach ∼600 km depth, front plumes can be tilted at increasing depths as their plume buoyancy is lessened, and rise at a slower rate when subjected to a slab-induced downwelling, 4) rear plumes whose buoyancy flux is close to that of a slab, can retard subduction until the slab is 600 km long, and 5) slab–plume interaction can lead to a diversity of spatial plume material distributions into the mantle wedge. We discuss natural slab/plume systems of the Cascadia/Bowie–Cobb, and Nazca/San Felix–Juan Fernandez systems on the basis of our experiments and each geodynamic context and assess the influence of slab downwelling at depths for the starting plumes of Java, Coral Sea and East Solomon. Overall, this study shows how slab/plume interactions can result in a variety of geological, geophysical and geochemical signatures.

The onset of the modern tectonic style that combines plate-related and plume-related mechanisms has been discussed. Such a tectonic style could have started on the Earth when all layers of our planet had formed. Analysis of available geological data shows that the solid inner core crystallized by 2.7 Ga. Typical geologic complexes appeared on the continents as a result of plate tectonics processes at that time. The layer D″ that accumulates lithospheric slabs, which do not remain at the upper-lower mantle interface but can go down to the core-mantle boundary, was finally produced by 2 Ga. At pressures and temperatures of the D″ layer perovskite, a principal mineral of the lower mantle transforms into postperovskite phase. The isotope data suggest the existence of mantle (EM-I and EM-II) domains, being the sources for oceanic island basalts (OIB) and the depleted upper mantle (asthenosphere), the source for mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB), from at least 2 Ga. It is accepted that the recent tectonic style started on the Earth at that period. Deep-seated processes suggest the involvement of all Earth’s layers. The asthenosphere–lithosphere interaction is responsible for different types of large surface structures that develop as fold mountains, oceanic spaces, and subduction zones. The descending lithospheric slabs (cold mantle material) and ascending mantle material in hot mantle provinces or the so-called low shear velocity provinces are responsible for the lower mantle convection. The plume is produced in the layer D″, which accumulates the descending lithosphere slabs as well as light elements released from the outer liquid core, which are oxidized in this layer, thus resulting in thermochemical plume formation. At the same time the molten ferric iron penetrates the core. So, we see the interaction of all Earth’s layers. The article also considers the evolutionary history of the Siberian continent over 700 Myr as early as the breakdown of Rodinia and the formation of mountain folds and rifting structures and the associated metallogeny.

An understanding of the dynamic Earth is crucial from the point of view of the physical inevitability and historical reality of the problem of the origin of life. Why has life occurred then evolved? How, when, and where? In Chapter 1, recent views of the dynamic Earth are outlined historically, beginning with the epoch-making proposal of continental drift theory. After the notion of immovable continents had been dispelled in the latter half of the twentieth century, the concept of the dynamic Earth rapidly emerged.

The new high-accuracy data on U–Pb zircon geochronology, Sm–Nd systematics, and geochemistry of anorthosites of the Anabar Shield are discussed. It is established that anorthosite massifs are composed of gabbro–anorthosites (1.96 Ga old) and oligoclasites (1.93 Ga old) in association with monzodiorites (1.84–1.90 Ga old) and porphyroblastic granites. These rocks were generated in the Archean (3.2–2.7 Ga ago) in the lower crust from quartz–diorite melts under the plume tectonics regime in line with the filterpressing mechanism. The rocks were successively exhumed to upper levels of the crust owing to the Paleoproterozoic impact-triggered process to form a tectonically juxtaposed complementary magmatic complex.

A variety of mantle plume types have been proposed and there is a wide range of ways that these plumes might interact with subduction zone arcs. This study looks at the frequency of interaction between previously catalogued plumes and subduction zones while also assessing the potential role of slab windows to either generate false plume signals or contribute to genuine examples of mantle plume–subduction zone interactions. Of the plumes included in several widely cited catalogues, 29% have moved within 1000 km of a subduction zone and 17% have moved within 500 km of a subduction zone over the past 60 Ma, assuming that the plume life span extended over this period. Of the plumes that moved within 1000 km of a subduction zone, 56% are rated as either a deep or mid-mantle plume by an author of at least one of the catalogues. The 44% of interacting plumes that are not rated as mid-mantle or deep by at least one author are the most likely to be related to “top-down” plate tectonic processes. This study shows that they were never coincident with a slab window, although they have often interacted within distances of 1000 km. The manner of interaction between plumes and slab windows depends on the relative positions of the plume, ridge, and slab window. Of the plumes that interact over a 1000 km circular “Zone of Potential Interaction” (ZPI), 28% are no longer interacting today, but have survived that process. While most plumes interact in the form of a ZPI moving over a trench from either behind or in front of the trench, several plumes do cross the trench, demonstrating that plumes can survive even that interaction. Plume–trench interaction occurs in clusters in the northeast and southwest Pacific with limited events in the northwest and southeast Pacific. The presence of clusters in the northeast and southwest Pacific may be caused by the closer proximity of mid-mantle and deep plumes to a subduction zone in these areas. Whereas some deeper plumes may be modified by slab related mantle flow, the coincidence of shallow plumes with changes in plate boundaries suggests an origin related to sites of weakness or extension in the oceanic crust.

Half a century ago, principles of the theory of lithosphere plate tectonics, or plate tectonics, were first formulated. Since then, the theory has become substantially more complicated and tectonic processes and phenomena have been identified that are not described by the theory. This relates to certain types of vertical movements, primarily to the newest uplifts that led to the formation of modern mountain systems. Comparison of geological processes (both those described by the theory of plate tectonics and those unexplained thus far) with data of the seismic tomography of the mantle has made it possible to outline a new tectonic model, according to which the source of observable tectonic manifestations is lateral flows of upper mantle matter, propagating from superplumes—flows of matter and energy rising from the mantle’s bottom. These lateral flows not only move lithospheric plates but also determine structural–substantial transformations of the lithosphere and the upper underlithospheric mantle, which lead to vertical movements and mounting building.

The Hadean and Archean geologic history of the Earth is discussed in the context of available knowledge from different sources: space physics and comparative planetology; isotope geochronology; geology and petrology of Archean greenstone belts (GB) and tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) complexes; and geodynamic modeling review to analyse plate-tectonic, plume activity, and impact processes. Correlation between the age peaks of terrestrial Hadean–Early Archean zircons and late heavy bombardment events on the Moon, as well as the Hf isotope composition of zircons indicating their mostly mafic sources, hint to an important role of impact processes in the Earth’s history between 4.4 and 3.8 Ga. The earliest continental crust (TTG complexes) formed at 4.2 Ga (Acasta gneisses), while its large-scale recycling left imprint in Hf isotope signatures after 3.75 Ga. The associations and geochemistry of rocks suggest that Archean greenstone belts formed in settings of rifting, ocean floor spreading, subduction, and plume magmatism generally similar to the present respective processes. The Archean history differed in the greater extent of rocks derived from mantle plumes (komatiites and basalts), boninites, and adakites as well as in shorter subduction cycles recorded in alternation of typical calc-alkaline andesite-dacite-rhyolite and adakite series that were generated in a hotter mantle with more turbulent convection and unsteady subduction. The Archean is interpreted as a transient period of small plate tectonics.

The paper is focused on the fundamental problem of influence of extraterrestrial factors on the Earth’s geologic and tectonic evolution. Extraterrestrial factors played a decisive role in the Earth’s genesis, the formation of the first Hadean continental crust, and the beginning of the Archean era. Their significant influence persisted in the later epochs: Even in the Phanerozoic, extraterrestrial factors might have had a considerable influence on the environment. The sialic cores of protocontinental crust (4.4–3.9 Ga) with first-generation greenstone zones (3.8–3.2 Ga) and the global system of granite–greenstone belts (3.1–2.7 Ga) formed in the rotation–plume regime, mainly in the subequatorial hot belt. The formation of these global structures was, to a large extent, influenced by asteroid impacts, which caused the impact-triggered genesis of mantle plumes. Dramatic changes in the subsequent geologic history began at 2.7–2.0 Ga; at 2.0 Ga they terminated with the Moon’s transition to an orbit similar to the present-day one (50 ± 3 Earth’s radii), accompanied by the abrupt slowdown of the Earth’s axial rotation, the termination of formation of the layer D″, and the start of recent plate tectonics, which is accompanied by the plume tectonics.
