1. Reconstruction of high-energy part of gamma-ray spectrum in thermal neutron capture by $^{113}$Cd

Abstract

The average gamma-ray spectrum $^{114}$Cd after thermal neutron capture in $^{113}$Cd was evaluated in units of mb/MeV. Two approaches are considered for estimation of the average gamma-ray spectrum with normalization of the experimental data: mean spectra for all gamma-energies were found by averaging frequency polygon for experimental data histogram, and mean spectra were estimated as the combination of theoretical values at low gamma-ray energies and averaging experimental data in high-energy range. The experi mental spectra were evaluated from the gamma-intensities presented by Mheemeed et al. [A. Mheemeed et al., Nucl. Phys. A 412 (1984) 113] and Belgya et al [T. Belgya et al., EPJ Web of Conf. 146 (2017) 05009]. They were normalized to the average theoretical spectrum which was calculated using EMPIRE and TALYS codes. The procedure of normalization of the high-energy part of the spectrum was described. Abstract

Photon strength functions describing the average response of the nucleus to an electromagnetic probe are key input information in the theoretical modelling of nuclear reactions. Consequently they are important for a wide range of fields such as nuclear structure, nuclear astrophysics, medical isotope production, fission and fusion reactor technologies. They are also sources of information for widely used reaction libraries such as the IAEA Reference Input Parameter Library and evaluated data files such as EGAF. In the past two decades, the amount of reaction gamma-ray data measured to determine photon strength functions has grown rapidly. Different experimental techniques have led to discrepant results and users are faced with the dilemma which (if any) of the divergent data to adopt. We report on a coordinated effort to compile and assess the existing experimental data on photon strength functions from the giant dipole resonance region to energies below the neutron separation energy. The assessment of the discrepant data at energies around or below the neutron separation energy has been possible only in a few cases where adequate information on the model-dependent analysis and estimation of uncertainties was available. In the giant dipole resonance region, we adopt the recommendations of the new IAEA photonuclear data library. We also present global empirical and semi-microscopic models that describe the photon strength functions in the entire energy region and reproduce reasonably well most of the experimental data. Abstract

Photo-induced reaction cross section data are of importance for a variety of current or emerging applications, such as radiation shielding design and radiation transport analyses, calculations of absorbed dose in the human body during radiotherapy, physics and technology of fission reactors (influence of photo-reactions on neutron balance) and fusion reactors (plasma diagnostics and shielding), activation analyses, safeguards and inspection technologies, nuclear waste transmutation, medical isotope production and astrophysical applications. Since the release of the IAEA Photonuclear Data Library in 1999 however, new experimental data as well as new methods to assess the reliability of experimental cross sections have become available. Theoretical models and input parameters used to evaluate photo-induced reactions have improved significantly over the years. In addition, new measurements of partial photoneutron cross sections using mono-energetic photon beams and advanced neutron detection systems have been performed allowing for the validation of the evaluations and assessments of the experimental data. Furthermore, technological advances have led to the construction of new and more powerful gamma-beam facilities, therefore new data needs are emerging. We report our coordinated efforts to address these data needs and present the results of the new evaluations of more than 200 nuclides included in the new updated IAEA Photonuclear Data Library, where the photon energy goes up to 200 MeV. We discuss the new assessment method and make recommendations to the user community in cases where the experimental data are discrepant and the assessments disagree. In addition, in the absence of experimental data, we present model predictions for photo-induced reaction cross section on nuclides of potential interest to medical radioisotope production.

Abstract

Updated values and corresponding uncertainties of Isovector Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR) parameters which are obtained by the least-squares fitting of theoretical photoabsorption cross sections to experimental data are presented. The theoretical photoabsorption cross sections are taken as a sum of the components corresponding to the excitation of the GDR and quasideuteron photodisintegration. The current compilation is an extension and improvement of the earlier compilations of Lorentzian parameters for ground-state photoneutron and photoabsorption cross sections and covers experimental data made available up to June 2017., Comment: 69 pages, 162 figures; accepted for publication in "Atomic Data and Nuclear Data Tables"

6. Shear viscosity of nuclear matter

Abstract

Shear viscosity $\eta$ is calculated for the nuclear matter described as a system of interacting nucleons with the van der Waals (VDW) equation of state. The Boltzmann-Vlasov kinetic equation is solved in terms of the plane waves of the collective overdamped motion. In the frequent-collision regime, the shear viscosity depends on the particle-number density $n$ through the mean-field parameter $a$, which describes attractive forces in the VDW equation. In the temperature region $T=15 - 40$~MeV, a ratio of the shear viscosity to the entropy density $s$ is smaller than 1 at the nucleon number density $n =(0.5 - 1.5)\,n^{}_0$, where $n^{}_0=0.16\,$fm$^{-3}$ is the particle density of equilibrium nuclear matter at zero temperature. A minimum of the $\eta/s$ ratio takes place somewhere in a vicinity of the critical point of the VDW system. Large values of $\eta/s\gg 1$ are, however, found in both the low-density, $n\ll n^{}_0$, and high-density, $n>2n^{}_0$, regions. Abstract

Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 (sqrt(s_NN) = 2.7 - 4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials (mu_B > 500 MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation-of-state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. Abstract

Photoabsorption cross sections and gamma-decay strength function are calculated and compared with experimental data to test the existing models of dipole radiative strength functions (RSF) for the middle-weight and heavy atomic nuclei. Simplified version of the modified Lorentzian model are proposed. New tables of giant dipole resonance (GDR) parameters are given. It is shown that the phenomenological closed-form models with asymmetric shape can be used for overall estimates of the dipole RSF in the gamma -ray energy region up to about 20 MeV when GDR parameters are known or the GDR systematics can be adopted. Otherwise, the HFB-QRPA microscopic model and the semi-classical approach with moving surface appear to be more adequate methods to estimate the dipole photoabsorption RSF., Comment: 33 pages; 5 figures, 3 tables. The collisional relaxation times and damping width of the giant isovector dipole resonances in nuclear matter are calculated. Abstract

The retardation and temperature effects in two-body collisions are studied. The collision integral with retardation effects is obtained on the base of the Kadanoff- Baym equations for Green functions in a form with allowance for reaching the local equilibrium system. The collisional relaxation times of collective vibrations are calculated using both the transport approach and doorway state mechanism with hierarchy of particle-hole configurations in heated nuclei. The relaxation times of the kinetic method are rather slowly dependent on multipolarity of the Fermi surface distortion and mode of the collective motion. The dependence of the relaxation times on temperature as well as on frequency of collective vibrations is considered and compared. It is shown that variations of the in-medium two-body cross-sections with energy lead to non-quadratic dependence of the collisional relaxation time both on temperature and on collective motion frequency., Comment: LaTeX, 14 pages; 6 gzipped *.ps files with figures. 15. Testing and improvements of gamma-ray strength functions for nuclear model calculations of nuclear data

Abstract

A closed-form thermodynamic pole approach,TPA, is developed for average description of the E1 radiative strength functions using the microcanonical ensemble for initial states. A semiclassical description of the collective excitation damping in this method is based on modern physical notion on the relaxation processes in Fermi systems.The TPA model gives rather accurate means of simultaneous description of the gamma- decay and photoabsorption strength functions in the medium and heavy nuclei. It is able to cover a relatively wide energy interval, ranging from zeroth gamma-ray energy to values above GDR peak energy, as compared with the others closed-form models for calculation of the E1 strength., Comment: LaTeX, 35 pages including 5 PostScipt figures. 16. Collisional relaxation of collective motion in a finite Fermi liquid

Abstract

Finite size effects in the equilibrium phase space density distribution function are taken into account for alculations of the relaxation of collective motion in finite nuclei. Memory effects in the collision integral and the diffusivity and the quantum oscillations of the equilibrium distribution function in momentum space are considered. It is shown that a smooth diffuse (Fermi-type) equilibrium distribution function leads to a spurious contribution to the relaxation time. The residual quantum oscillations of the equilibrium distribution function eliminates the spurious contribution. It ensures the disappearance of the gain and loss terms in the collision integral in the ground state of the system and strongly reduces the internal collisional width of the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonances., Comment: REVTeX, 36 pages, included 13 PostScript figures

Abstract

A simple analytical expression for the gamma-decay strength function is derived with microcanonical ensemble for initial excited states. The approach leads to both a non-zero limit of the strength function for vanishing gamma-ray energy and a partial breakdown of Brink hypothesis. It is shown that the low energy behaviour of the gamma-decay strength functions is governed by the energy behavior of the damping width. The damping of the collective vibrations in hot nuclei is studied within the semiclassical Vlasov-Landau kinetic theory. The extention of the method of independent sources of dissipation is used to allow for irreversible energy transfer by chaos weighted wall formula. The expressions for the intrinsic width of the giant multipole resonances are obtained. Abstract

Closed-form models for photon strength functions for the description of photoabsorption cross section in the energy range 5 - 30 MeV for even-even nuclei are tested. The experimental database was prepared with systematic uncertainty less than 10% from the EXFOR data. The uncertainties are estimated using the calculations of the photo cross sections within TALYS 1.6 code. The theoretical models are compared with experimental photoabsorption cross section data. The minimum of the least-square deviation and the root-mean-square deviation factor are used as a criteria comparison of the theoretical calculations with experimental data. It is shown that the simple modified Lorentzian model is the best approach for simulation of the photoabsorption cross section at the gamma-ray energies below ~ 30 MeV., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract

Photon strength functions describing the average response of the nucleus to an electromagnetic probe are key input information in the theoretical modelling of nuclear reactions. Consequently they are important for a wide range of fields such as nuclear structure, nuclear astrophysics, medical isotope production, fission and fusion reactor technologies. They are also sources of information for widely used reaction libraries such as the IAEA Reference Input Parameter Library and evaluated data files such as EGAF. In the past two decades, the amount of reaction gamma-ray data measured to determine photon strength functions has grown rapidly. Different experimental techniques have led to discrepant results and users are faced with the dilemma of which (if any) of the divergent data to adopt. We report on a coordinated effort to compile and assess the existing experimental data on photon strength functions from the giant dipole resonance region to energies below the neutron separation energy. The assessment of the discrepant data at energies around or below the neutron separation energy has been possible only in a few cases where adequate information on the model-dependent analysis and estimation of uncertainties was available. In the giant dipole resonance region, we adopt the recommendations of the new IAEA photonuclear data library. We also present global empirical and semi-microscopic models that describe the photon strength functions in the entire energy region and reproduce reasonably well most of the experimental data. Abstract

The average gamma-ray spectrum of 114Cd after thermal neutron capture in 113Cd was evaluated in units of mb/MeV. Two approaches are considered for estimation of the average gamma-ray spectrum with normalization of the experimental data: mean spectra for all gamma-energies were found by averaging frequency polygon for experimental data histogram, and mean spectra were estimated as the combination of theoretical values at low gamma-ray energies and averaging experimental data in high-energy range. The experimental spectra were evaluated from the gamma-intensities presented by Mheemeed et al. [A. Mheemeed et al. Nucl. Phys. A 412 (1984) 113] and Belgya et al. [T. Belgya et al. EPJ Web of Conf. 146 (2017) 05009]. They were normalized to the average theoretical spectrum which was calculated using EMPIRE and TALYS codes. The procedure of normalization of the high-energy part of the spectrum was described. Estimated gamma-spectra for 113Cd(,{xy }) n reaction induced by thermal neutrons were presented. Abstract

Представлено результати дослідження різних методів теоретичного опису гамма-переходів у процесах поглинання швидких нейтронів та фотоподілі. Використовуються недавні експериментальні дані, а саме спектр миттєвих гамма-квантів у енергетичному діапазоні 2÷18 МеВ від поглинання нейтронів з енергією 14-МеВ ізотопами Ni та ізомерні відношення у первинних фрагментах фотоподілу ізотопів U, Np та Pu гальмівним випромінюванням із граничними енергіями Ee=10.5, 12 та 18 МеВ. Експериментальні дані порівнюються з теоретичними розрахунками, виконаними за допомогою кодів EMPIRE 3.2 та TALYS 1.6. Розраховано розподіли кутових моментів та середні значення кутових моментів у первинних фрагментах 84Br, 97Nb, 90Rb, 131,133Te, 132Sb, 132,134I, 135Xe. Досліджено вплив характеристик збуджених станів ядер, а саме різних моделей фотонних силових функцій та густин ядерних рівнів, на результати розрахунків, The results of the study of gamma-transition description in fast neutron capture and photofission are presented. The mean value of angular momenta and their distributions were determined in the primary fragments 84Br, 97Nb, 90Rb, 131,133Te, 132Sb, 132,134I, 135Xe of photofission. Abstract

Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 (sqrt(s_NN) = 2.7 - 4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials (mu_B > 500 MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation-of-state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. In this article, we review the motivation for and the physics programme of CBM, including activities before the start of data taking in 2022, in the context of the worldwide efforts to explore high-density QCD matter.

Abstract

Closed-form models for photon strength functions for the description of photoabsorption cross section in the energy range 5 -30 MeV for even-even nuclei are tested. The experimental database was prepared with systematic uncertainty less than 10 % from the EXFOR data. The uncertainties are estimated using the calculations of the photo cross sections within TALYS 1.6 code. The theoretical models are compared with experimental photoabsorption cross section data. The minimum of the least-square deviation and the root-mean-square deviation factor are used as a criteria comparison of the theoretical calculations with experimental data. It is shown that the simple modified Lorentzian model is the best approach for simulation of the photoabsorption cross section at the gamma-ray energies below ~ 30 MeV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Angular distributions of the 15N+12C elastic and inelastic scattering were measured at Elab(15N) = 81 MeV to study the nuclear-nuclear interactions and possible transfer contributions to the scattering. The data were analyzed with the coupled-reaction-channels (CRC) method using the 15N+12C optical potential ofWoods-Saxon shape. The elastic and inelastic scattering as well as the most obvious one- and two-step transfer reactions were included in the channel-coupling scheme. The 15N+12C optical potential and deformation parameters of 15N were deduced. The transfer reaction contributions to the 15N+12C elastic and inelastic scattering channels were estimated. The 15N+12C elastic scattering at 81 MeV was compared with the 14N+12C elastic scattering of 14N beam energy 78 MeV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 (sqrt(s_NN) = 2.7 - 4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials (mu_B > 500 MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation-of-state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. In this article, we review the motivation for and the physics programme of CBM, including activities before the start of data taking in 2022, in the context of the worldwide efforts to explore high-density QCD matter.

Abstract

The cross-sections of prompt gamma-ray production from natSn and natC elements induced by 14.1-MeV neutrons were measured. The time-of-flight technique was used for n-γ discrimination. The experimental results were compared with theoretical calculations performed by Empire 3.2 and Talys 1.6 codes using different models for photon strength function and nuclear level density. Abstract

Photoabsorption cross sections and y-decay strength function are calculated and compared with experimental data to test the existing models of dipole radiative strength functions (RSF) for the middle-weight and heavy atomic nuclei. Simplified version of the modified Lorentzian model are proposed. New tables of giant dipole resonance (GDR) parameters are given. It is shown that the phenomenological closed-form models with asymmetric shape can be used for overall estimates of the dipole RSF in the y-ray energy region up to about 20 MeV when GDR parameters are known or the GDR systematics can be adopted. Otherwise, the HFB-QRPA microscopic model and the semi-classical approach with moving surface appear to be more adequate methods to estimate the dipole photoabsorption RSF., SCOPUS: cp.p, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract

The yield of prompt γ-rays produced by interaction of 14 MeV neutrons with natNi was measured using the time-offlight technique. A differential cross section from (n, xγ) reactions was unfolded from amplitude spectrum. Experimental results were compared with theoretical calculations performed using EMPIRE 3.2 and TALYS 1.6 codes.
