Search

Recent years have witnessed a steady progress towards blending 2D quantum materials into technology, with future applications often rooted in the electronic structure. Since crossings and inversions of electronic bands with different orbital characters determine intrinsic quantum transport properties, knowledge of the orbital character is essential. Here, we benchmark angle-resolved photoelectron emission spectroscopy (ARPES) as a tool to experimentally derive orbital characters. For this purpose we study the valence electronic structure of two technologically relevant quantum materials, graphene and WSe$_2$, and focus on circular dichroism that is believed to provide sensitivity to the orbital angular momentum. We analyze the contributions related to angular atomic photoionization profiles, interatomic interference, and multiple scattering. Regimes in which initial-state properties could be disentangled from the ARPES maps are critically discussed and the potential of using circular-dichroic ARPES as a tool to investigate the spin polarization of initial bands is explored. For the purpose of generalization, results from two additional materials, GdMn$_6$Sn$_6$ and PtTe$_2$ are presented in addition. This research demonstrates rich complexity of the underlying physics of circular-dichroic ARPES, providing new insights that will shape the interpretation of both past and future circular-dichroic ARPES studies., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Magnetic 2D materials enable novel tuning options of magnetism. As an example, the van der Waals material FePS3, a zigzag-type intralayer antiferromagnet, exhibits very strong magnetoelastic coupling due to the different bond lengths along different ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic coupling directions enabling elastic tuning of magnetic properties. The likely cause of the length change is the intricate competition between direct exchange of the Fe atoms and superexchange via the S and P atoms. To elucidate this interplay, we study the band structure of exfoliated FePS3 by mu m scale ARPES (Angular Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy), both, above and, for the first time, below the Neel temperature TN. We find three characteristic changes across TN. They involve S 3p-type bands, Fe 3d-type bands and P 3p-type bands, respectively, as attributed by comparison with density functional theory calculations (DFT+U). This highlights the involvement of all the atoms in the magnetic phase transition providing independent evidence for the intricate exchange paths.

With increasing attention in Majorana physics for possible quantum bit applications, a large interest has been developed to understand the properties of the interface between a $s$-type superconductor and a topological insulator. Up to this point the interface analysis was mainly focused on in situ prepared Josephson junctions, which consist of two coupled single interfaces or to ex-situ fabricated single interface devices. In our work we utilize a novel fabrication process, combining selective area growth and shadow evaporation which allows the characterization of a single in situ fabricated Nb/$\mathrm{(Bi_{0.15}Sb_{0.85})_2Te_3}$ nano interface. The resulting high interface transparency is apparent by a zero bias conductance increase by a factor of 1.7. Furthermore, we present a comprehensive differential conductance analysis of our single in situ interface for various magnetic fields, temperatures and gate voltages. Additionally, density functional theory calculations of the superconductor/topological insulator interface are performed in order to explain the peak-like shape of our differential conductance spectra and the origin of the observed smearing of conductance features., Comment: Main manuscript: 11 pages, 6 figures, Supplementary material: 10 pages, 9 figures

Circular dichroism in angle-resolved photoemission (CD-ARPES) is one of the promising techniques for obtaining experimental insight into topological properties of novel materials, in particular to the orbital angular momentum (OAM) in dispersive bands, which might be related, albeit certainly in a non-trivial way, to the momentum resolved Berry curvature of the bands. Therefore, it is important to understand how non-vanishing CD-ARPES signal arises in graphene, a material where Dirac bands are made from C $|2p_z\rangle$ orbitals that carry zero OAM, spin-orbit-coupling (SOC) can be neglected, and Berry curvature effectively vanishes. Dubs et al., Phys. Rev. B 32, 8389 (1985) have demonstrated non-vanishing cricular dichroism in angular distribution (CDAD) from an oriented $p_z$ orbital, and this process can be responsible for the experimentally observed CD-ARPES in graphene. In this paper, we derive the CD-ARPES from $p_z$ orbitals by elementary means, using only simple algebraic formulas and tabulated numerical values, and show that it leads to significant CD-ARPES signal over the entire vacuum ultraviolet and soft x-ray energy range, with an exception of the photon energy region near $h\nu \approx 40$ eV. We also demonstrate that another process, emerging from the finite electron inelastic mean free path, also leads to CD-ARPES of the potentially similar order of magnitude, as previously discussed by Moser, J. Electron Spectrosc. Relat. Phenom. 214, 29 (2017). Among antiferromagnetic materials, Mn$_2$Au is one of the most intensively studied, and it serves as a very popular platform for testing various ideas related to antiferromagnetic magnetotransport and dynamics. Since recently, this material has also attracted considerable interest in the context of optical properties and optically-driven antiferromagnetic switching. In this work, we use first principles methods to explore the physics of charge photocurrents, spin photocurrents and inverse Faraday effect in antiferromagnetic Mn$_2$Au. We predict the symmetry and magnitude of these effects, and speculate that they can be used for tracking the dynamics of staggered moments during switching. Our calculations reveal the emergence of large photocurrents of spin in collinear Mn$_2$Au, whose properties can be understood as a result of a non-linear optical version of spin Hall effect $-$ which we refer to as the $\textit{photospin Hall effect}$ encoded into the relation between the driving charge and resulting spin photocurrents. Moreover, we suggest that even a very small canting in Mn$_2$Au can give rise to colossal spin photocurrents which are $\textit{chiral}$ in flavor. We conclude that the combination of staggered magnetization with the structural and electronic properties of this material results in a unique blend of prominent photocurrents, which makes Mn$_2$Au a unique platform for advanced optospintronics applications.

We identify an optical excitation mechanism that transfers a valley polarization from photo-excited electron-hole pairs to free charge carriers in twisted WSe$_2$/MoSe$_2$ heterobilayers. For small twist angles, the valley lifetimes of the charge carriers are surprisingly short, despite the occurrence of interlayer excitons with their presumably long recombination and polarization lifetimes. For large twist angles, we measure an increase in both the valley polarization and its respective lifetime by more than two orders of magnitude. Interestingly, in such heterobilayers we observe an interlayer transfer of valley polarization from the WSe$_2$ layer into the MoSe$_2$ layer. This mechanism enables the creation of a photo-induced valley polarization of free charge carriers in MoSe$_2$, which amplitude scales with the gate-induced charge carrier density. This is in contrast to monolayer MoSe$_2$, where such a gate-tunable valley polarization cannot be achieved. By combining time-resolved Kerr rotation, photoluminesence and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements with first principles calculations, we show that these findings can be explained by twist angle dependent interlayer scattering mechanisms involving the Q- and $\Gamma$-valleys., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures

Exfoliated magnetic 2D materials enable versatile tuning of magnetization, e.g., by gating or providing proximity-induced exchange interaction. However, their electronic band structure after exfoliation has not been probed, most likely due to their photochemical sensitivity. Here, we provide micron-scale angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of the exfoliated intralayer antiferromagnet MnPS$_3$ above and below the N\'{e}el temperature down to one monolayer. The favorable comparison with density functional theory calculations enables to identify the orbital character of the observed bands. Consistently, we find pronounced changes across the N\'{e}el temperature for bands that consist of Mn 3d and 3p levels of adjacent S atoms. The deduced orbital mixture indicates that the superexchange is relevant for the magnetic interaction. There are only minor changes between monolayer and thicker films demonstrating the predominant 2D character of MnPS$_3$. The novel access is transferable to other MPX$_3$ materials (M: transition metal, P: phosphorus, X: chalcogenide) providing a multitude of antiferromagnetic arrangements., Comment: 26 pages, 17 figures

We demonstrate that an important quantum material WTe$_2$ exhibits a new type of geometry-induced spin-filtering effect in photoemission, stemming from low symmetry that is responsible for its exotic transport properties. Through the laser-driven spin-polarized angle-resolved photoemission Fermi surface mapping, we showcase highly asymmetric spin textures of electrons photoemitted from the surface states of WTe$_2$. Such asymmetries are not present in the initial state spin textures, which are bound by the time-reversal and crystal lattice mirror plane symmetries. The findings are reproduced qualitatively by theoretical modeling within the one-step model photoemission formalism. The effect could be understood within the free-electron final state model as an interference due to emission from different atomic sites. The observed effect is a manifestation of time-reversal symmetry breaking of the initial state in the photoemission process, and as such it cannot be eliminated, but only its magnitude influenced, by special experimental geometries., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

In the realm of two-dimensional materials magnetic and transport properties of a unique representative $-$ Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ $-$ attract ever increasing attention. Here, we use a developed first-principles method for calculating laser-induced response to study the emergence of photo-induced currents of charge and spin in single-layer Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$, which are of second order in the electric field. We provide a symmetry analysis of the emergent photocurrents in the system finding it to be in excellent agreement with ab-initio calculations. We analyse the magnitude and behavior of the charge photocurrents with respect to disorder strength, frequency and band filling. Remarkably, not only do we find a large charge current response, but also predict that Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ can serve as a source of significant laser-induced spin-currents, which makes this material as a promising platform for various applications in optospintronics.

In this work, we studied the bulk band structure of a topological insulator (TI) Bi2Se3 and determined the contributions of the Bi and Se orbital states to the valence bands using standing wave-excited hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (SW-HAXPES). This SW technique can provide the element-resolved information and extract individual Bi and Se contributions to the Bi2Se3 valence band. Comparisons with density functional theory (DFT) calculations (LDA and GW) reveal that the Bi 6s, Bi 6p, and Se 4p states are dominant in the Bi2Se3 HAXPES valence band. These findings pave a way for studying the element-resolved band structure and orbital contributions of this class of TIs., Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures

Using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), we investigate the surface electronic structure of the magnetic van der Waals compounds MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ and MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$, the $n=$~1 and 2 members of a modular (Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$(MnBi$_2$Te$_4$) series, which have attracted recent interest as intrinsic magnetic topological insulators. Combining circular dichroic, spin-resolved and photon-energy-dependent ARPES measurements with calculations based on density functional theory, we unveil complex momentum-dependent orbital and spin textures in the surface electronic structure and disentangle topological from trivial surface bands. We find that the Dirac-cone dispersion of the topologial surface state is strongly perturbed by hybridization with valence-band states for Bi$_2$Te$_3$-terminated surfaces but remains preserved for MnBi$_2$Te$_4$-terminated surfaces. Our results firmly establish the topologically non-trivial nature of these magnetic van der Waals materials and indicate that the possibility of realizing a quantized anomalous Hall conductivity depends on surface termination.

We review the contributions of surface science methods to discover and improve 3D topological insulator materials, while illustrating with examples from our own work. In particular, we demonstrate that spin-polarized angular-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy is instrumental to evidence the spin-helical surface Dirac cone, to tune its Dirac point energy towards the Fermi level, and to discover novel types of topological insulators such as dual ones or switchable ones in phase change materials. The quantum anomalous Hall effect is a fundamental transport response of a topologically non-trivial system in zero magnetic field. Its physical origin relies on the intrinsically inverted electronic band structure and ferromagnetism, and its most consequential manifestation is the dissipation-free flow of chiral charge currents at the edges that can potentially transform future quantum electronics. Here we report a previously unknown Berry-curvature-driven anomalous Hall regime ('Q-window') at above-Kelvin temperatures in the magnetic topological bulk crystals where through growth Mn ions self-organize into a period-ordered MnBi$_2$Te$_4$/Bi$_2$Te$_3$ superlattice. Robust ferromagnetism of the MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ monolayers opens a large surface gap, and anomalous Hall conductance reaches an $e^2/h$ quantization plateau when the Fermi level is tuned into this gap within a Q-window in which the anomalous Hall conductance from the bulk is to a high precision zero. The quantization in this new regime is not obstructed by the bulk conduction channels and thus should be present in a broad family of topological magnets.

The electronic structure of the ferromagnetic semiconductor EuO is investigated by means of spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (spin-ARPES) and density functional theory. EuO exhibits unique properties of hosting both weakly-dispersive nearly fully polarized Eu $4f$ bands, as well as O $2p$ levels indirectly exchange-split by the interaction with Eu nearest neighbors. Our temperature-dependent spin-ARPES data directly demonstrates the exchange splitting in O $2p$ and its vanishing at the Curie temperature. Our calculations with a Hubbard $U$ term reveal a complex nature of the local exchange splitting on the oxygen site and in conduction bands. We discuss the mechanisms of the indirect exchange in the O 2p levels by analyzing orbital-resolved band characters in ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. The directional effects due to spin-orbit coupling are predicted theoretically to be significant in particular in the Eu 4f band manifold. The analysis of the shape of spin-resolved spectra in the Eu $4f$ spectral region reveals signatures of hybridization with O $2p$, in agreement with the theoretical predictions. We also analyze spectral changes in the spin-integrated spectra throughout the Curie temperature and demonstrate they derive from both the magnetic phase transition and effects due to sample aging, unavoidable for this highly reactive material., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Many properties of real materials can be modeled using ab initio methods within a single-particle picture. However, for an accurate theoretical treatment of excited states, it is necessary to describe electron-electron correlations including interactions with bosons: phonons, plasmons, or magnons. In this work, by comparing spin- and momentum-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements to many-body calculations carried out with a newly developed first-principles method, we show that a kink in the electronic band dispersion of a ferromagnetic material can occur at much deeper binding energies than expected (E_b=1.5 eV). We demonstrate that the observed spectral signature reflects the formation of a many-body state that includes a photohole bound to a coherent superposition of renormalized spin-flip excitations. The existence of such a many-body state sheds new light on the physics of the electron-magnon interaction which is essential in fields such as spintronics and Fe-based superconductivity., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

The concepts of Weyl fermions and topological semimetals emerging in three-dimensional momentum space are extensively explored owing to the vast variety of exotic properties that they give rise to. On the other hand, very little is known about semimetallic states emerging in two-dimensional magnetic materials, which present the foundation for both present and future information technology. Here, we demonstrate that including the magnetization direction into the topological analysis allows for a natural classification of topological semimetallic states that manifest in two-dimensional ferromagnets as a result of the interplay between spin-orbit and exchange interactions. We explore the emergence and stability of such mixed topological semimetals in realistic materials, and point out the perspectives of mixed topological states for current-induced orbital magnetism and current-induced domain wall motion. Our findings pave the way to understanding, engineering and utilizing topological semimetallic states in two-dimensional spin-orbit ferromagnets.

LaCrO$_3$ (LCO) / SrTiO$_3$ (STO) heterojunctions are intriguing due to a polar discontinuity along (001), two distinct and controllable interface structures [(LaO)$^+$/(TiO$_2$)$^0$ and (SrO)$^0$/(CrO$_2$)$^-$], and interface-induced polarization. In this study, we have used soft- and hard x-ray standing-wave excited photoemission spectroscopy (SW-XPS) to generate a quantitative determination of the elemental depth profiles and interface properties, band alignments, and the depth distribution of the interface-induced built-in potentials in the two constituent oxides. We observe an alternating charged interface configuration: a positively charged (LaO)$^+$/(TiO$_2$)$^0$ intermediate layer at the LCO$_\textbf{top}$/STO$_\textbf{bottom}$ interface and a negatively charged (SrO)$^0$/(CrO$_2$)$^-$ intermediate layer at the STO$_\textbf{top}$/LCO$_\textbf{bottom}$ interface. Using core-level SW data, we have determined the depth distribution of species, including through the interfaces, and these results are in excellent agreement with scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS) mapping of local structure and composition. SW-XPS also enabled deconvolution of the LCO-contributed and STO- contributed matrix-element-weighted density of states (MEWDOSs) from the valence band (VB) spectra for the LCO/STO superlattice (SL). Monitoring the VB edges of the deconvoluted MEWDOS shifts with a change in probing profile, the alternating charge- induced built-in potentials are observed in both constituent oxides. Finally, using a two-step simulation approach involving first core-level binding energy shifts and then valence-band modeling, the built-in potential gradients across the SL are resolved in detail and represented by the depth distribution of VB edges., Comment: Main text: 29 pages, 5 figures; Supplementary Information: 20 pages, 10 figures

The dilute magnetic semiconductors have promise in spin-based electronics applications due to their potential for ferromagnetic order at room temperature, and various unique switching and spin-dependent conductivity properties. However, the precise mechanism by which the transition-metal doping produces ferromagnetism has been controversial. Here we have studied a dilute magnetic semiconductor (5% manganese-doped gallium arsenide) with Bragg-reflection standing-wave hard X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and resolved its electronic structure into element- and momentum- resolved components. The measured valence band intensities have been projected into element-resolved components using analogous energy scans of Ga 3d, Mn 2p, and As 3d core levels, with results in excellent agreement with element-projected Bloch spectral functions and clarification of the electronic structure of this prototypical material. This technique should be broadly applicable to other multi-element materials.

We have investigated the electronic structure of the dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS) $Ga_{0.98}Mn_{0.02}P$ and compared it to that of an undoped $GaP$ reference sample, using hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HXPS) and hard X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (HARPES) at energies of about 3 keV. We present experimental data, as well as theoretical calculations, in order to understand the role of the Mn dopant in the emergence of ferromagnetism in this material. Both core-level spectra and angle-resolved or angle-integrated valence spectra are discussed. In particular, the HARPES experimental data are compared to free-electron final-state model calculations and to more accurate one-step photoemission theory. The experimental results show differences between $Ga_{0.98}Mn_{0.02}P$ and $GaP$ in both angle-resolved and angle-integrated valence spectra. The $Ga_{0.98}Mn_{0.02}P$ bands are broadened due to the presence of Mn impurities that disturb the long-range translational order of the host $GaP$ crystal. Mn-induced changes of the electronic structure are observed over the entire valence band range, including the presence of a distinct impurity band close to the valence-band maximum of the DMS. These experimental results are in good agreement with the one-step photoemission calculations, and a prior HARPES study of $Ga_{0.97}Mn_{0.03}As$ and $GaAs$ (Gray et al. Nature Materials 11, 957 (2012)), demonstrating the strong similarity between these two materials. The Mn 2p and 3s core-level spectra also reveal an essentially identical state in doping both $GaAs$ and $GaP$., Comment: 37 pages (double spaced) 10 figures

The growth of up to 10 monolayer-thick Fe films on a Au(001) surface was investigated during deposition at room temperature and during annealing using low-energy electron diffraction and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy as well as locally with low-energy electron microscopy and photoemission electron microscopy. The growth proceeds with a submonolayer of Au segregating to the surface of Fe, which is in agreement with previous studies. Annealing was found to be critical for the presence of Au on the Fe surface. Our findings show that Au segregation proceeds by the formation of cracks in the Fe film, starting at the annealing temperature of 190 {\deg}C, through which Au diffuses towards the surface. We explain the localized Au segregation with a shadowing effect due to the oblique deposition geometry. As a result, an Fe film with significantly improved roughness, but covered with a Au overlayer, is obtained. This study shows the necessity to employ spatially-resolved techniques to fully understand the growth modes of the layered epitaxial systems.

Three-dimensional topological insulators host surface states with linear dispersion, which manifest as a Dirac cone. Nanoscale transport measurements provide direct access to the transport properties of the Dirac cone in real space and allow the detailed investigation of charge carrier scattering. Here, we use scanning tunnelling potentiometry to analyse the resistance of different kinds of defects at the surface of a (Bi0.53Sb0.47)2Te3 topological insulator thin film. The largest localized voltage drop we find to be located at domain boundaries in the topological insulator film, with a resistivity about four times higher than that of a step edge. Furthermore, we resolve resistivity dipoles located around nanoscale voids in the sample surface. The influence of such defects on the resistance of the topological surface state is analysed by means of a resistor network model. The effect resulting from the voids is found to be small compared to the other defects.

ReS$_2$ is considered as a promising candidate for novel electronic and sensor applications. The low crystal symmetry of the van der Waals compound ReS$_2$ leads to a highly anisotropic optical, vibrational, and transport behavior. However, the details of the electronic band structure of this fascinating material are still largely unexplored. We present a momentum-resolved study of the electronic structure of monolayer, bilayer, and bulk ReS$_2$ using k-space photoemission microscopy in combination with first-principles calculations. We demonstrate that the valence electrons in bulk ReS$_2$ are - contrary to assumptions in recent literature - significantly delocalized across the van der Waals gap. Furthermore, we directly observe the evolution of the valence band dispersion as a function of the number of layers, revealing a significantly increased effective electron mass in single-layer crystals. We also find that only bilayer ReS$_2$ has a direct band gap. Our results establish bilayer ReS$_2$ as a advantageous building block for two-dimensional devices and van der Waals heterostructures.

We consider the details of the near-surface electronic band structure of a prototypical ferromagnet, Fe(001). Using high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy we demonstrate openings of the spin-orbit induced electronic band gaps near the Fermi level. The band gaps and thus the Fermi surface can be manipulated by changing the remanent magnetization direction. The effect is of the order of $\Delta$E = 100 meV and $\Delta \text {k} = 0.1\,\text{\AA}^{-1}$. We show that the observed dispersions are dominated by the bulk band structure. First-principles calculations and one-step photoemission calculations suggest that the effect is related to changes in the electronic ground state, rather than caused by the photoemission process itself. The symmetry of the effect indicates that the observed electronic bulk states are influenced by the presence of the surface, which might be understood as related to a Rashba-type effect. By pinpointing the regions in the electronic band structure where the switchable band gaps occur, we demonstrate the significance of spin-orbit interaction even for elements as light as 3d ferromagnets.

A combined theoretical and experimental study reveals evidence for the dual topological insulating character of the stoichiometric natural superlattice phase $\mathrm{Bi_{1}Te_{1}}=\mathrm{[Bi_{2}]_{1}[Bi_{2}Te_{3}]_{2}}$, being a stack of alternating Bi bilayers and two quintuple layers of $\mathrm{Bi_{2}Te_{3}}$. We identify $\mathrm{Bi_{1}Te_{1}}$ by density functional theory to exhibit a non trivial time-reversal symmetry-driven character of $\mathbb{Z}_{2}=(0;001)$ and additionally a mirror-symmetry induced mirror Chern number of $n_{{\cal M}}=-2$, which indicates that $\mathrm{Bi_{1}Te_{1}}$ is both a weak topological insulator and a topological crystalline insulator. The coexistence of the two phenomena preordains distinct crystal planes to host topological surface states that are protected by the respective symmetries. The surface perpendicular to the stacking direction is the 'dark' surface of the weak topological insulator, while hosting mirror-symmetry protected surface states along the $\bar{\Gamma\mathrm{M}}$ direction at non-time-reversal invariant momenta points. We confirm the stacking sequence of our MBE-grown $\mathrm{Bi_{1}Te_{1}}$ thin films by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, and find indications of the topological crystalline and weak topological character in the surface electronic spin structure by spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, which nicely match the results from density functional theory.

We report on the observation of a terahertz radiation induced photon drag effect in epitaxially grown $n$- and $p$-type (Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$)$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ three dimensional topological insulators with different antimony concentrations $x$ varying from 0 to 1. We demonstrate that the excitation with polarized terahertz radiation results in a $dc$ electric photocurrent. While at normal incidence a current arises due to the photogalvanic effect in the surface states, at oblique incidence it is outweighed by the trigonal photon drag effect. The developed microscopic model and theory show that the photon drag photocurrent is due to the dynamical momentum alignment by time and space dependent radiation electric field and implies the radiation induced asymmetric scattering in the electron momentum space., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

Ternary (Bi1-xSbx)2Te3 films with an Sb content between 0 and 100% were deposited on a Si(111) substrate by means of molecular beam epitaxy. X-ray diffraction measurements confirm single crystal growth in all cases. The Sb content is determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Consistent values of the Sb content are obtained from Raman spectroscopy. Scanning Raman spectroscopy reveals that the (Bi1-xSbx)2Te3 layers with an intermediate Sb content show spatial composition inhomogeneities. The observed spectra broadening in angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is also attributed to this phenomena. Upon increasing the Sb content from x=0 to 1 the ARPES measurements show a shift of the Fermi level from the conduction band to the valence band. This shift is also confirmed by corresponding magnetotransport measurements where the conductance changes from n- to p-type. In this transition region, an increase of the resistivity is found, indicating a location of the Fermi level within the band gap region. More detailed measurements in the transition region reveals that the transport takes place in two independent channels. By means of a gate electrode the transport can be changed from n- to p-type, thus allowing a tuning of the Fermi level within the topologically protected surface states., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, published in Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter

Time reversal dictates that nonmagnetic, centrosymmetric crystals cannot be spin-polarized as a whole. However, it has been recently shown that the electronic structure in these crystals can in fact show regions of high spin-polarization, as long as it is probed locally in real and in reciprocal space. In this article we present the first observation of this type of compensated polarization in MoS$_2$ bulk crystals. Using spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) we directly observed a spin-polarization of more than 65% for distinct valleys in the electronic band structure. By additionally evaluating the probing depth of our method we find that these valence band states at the $\overline{\text{K}}$ point in the Brillouin zone are close to fully polarized for the individual atomic trilayers of MoS$_2$, which is confirmed by our density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, we show that this spin-layer locking leads to the observation of highly spin-polarized bands in ARPES since these states are almost completely confined within two dimensions. Our findings prove that these highly desired properties of MoS$_2$ can be accessed without thinning it down to the monolayer limit.

3D topological insulators are a new state of quantum matter which exhibits both a bulk band structure with an insulating energy gap as well as metallic spin-polarized Dirac fermion states when interfaced with a topologically trivial material. There have been various attempts to tune the Dirac point to a desired energetic position for exploring its unusual quantum properties. Here we show a direct experimental proof by angle-resolved photoemission of the realization of a vertical topological p-n junction made of a heterostructure of two different binary 3D TI materials $\mathrm{Bi_2Te_3}$ and $\mathrm{Sb_2Te_3}$ epitaxially grown on Si(111). We demonstrate that the chemical potential is tunable by about 200 meV when decreasing the upper $\mathrm{Sb_2Te_3}$ layer thickness from 25 to 6 quintuple layers without applying any external bias. These results make it realistic to observe the topological exciton condensate and pave the way of exploring other exotic quantum phenomena in the near future., Comment: 5 Figures; including supplementary information

The interfaces between two condensed phases often exhibit emergent physical properties that can lead to new physics and novel device applications, and are the subject of intense study in many disciplines. We here apply novel experimental and theoretical techniques to the characterization of one such interesting interface system: the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) formed in multilayers consisting of SrTiO$_3$ (STO) and GdTiO$_3$ (GTO). This system has been the subject of multiple studies recently and shown to exhibit very high carrier charge densities and ferromagnetic effects, among other intriguing properties. We have studied a 2DEG-forming multilayer of the form [6 unit cells STO/3 unit cells of GTO]$_{20}$ using a unique array of photoemission techniques including soft and hard x-ray excitation, soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission, core-level spectroscopy, resonant excitation, and standing-wave effects, as well as theoretical calculations of the electronic structure at several levels and of the actual photoemission process. Standing-wave measurements below and above a strong resonance have been introduced as a powerful method for studying the 2DEG depth distribution. We have thus characterized the spatial and momentum properties of this 2DEG with unprecedented detail, determining via depth-distribution measurements that it is spread throughout the 6 u.c. layer of STO, and measuring the momentum dispersion of its states. The experimental results are supported in several ways by theory, leading to a much more complete picture of the nature of this 2DEG, and suggesting that oxygen vacancies are not the origin of it. Similar multi-technique photoemission studies of such states at buried interfaces, combined with comparable theory, will be a very fruitful future approach for exploring and modifying the fascinating world of buried-interface physics and chemistry., Comment: 34 pages, 10 figures

In order to stabilize Majorana excitations within vortices of proximity induced topological superconductors, it is mandatory that the Dirac point matches the Fermi level rather exactly, such that the conventionally confined states within the vortex are well separated from the Majorana-type excitation. Here, we show by angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy that (Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$)$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ thin films with $x=0.94$ prepared by molecular beam epitaxy and transferred in ultrahigh vacuum from the molecular beam epitaxy system to the photoemission setup matches this condition. The Dirac point is within 10 meV around the Fermi level and we do not observe any bulk bands intersecting the Fermi level.

The evolution of both information and energy technology is intimately connected to complex condensed matter systems, the properties of which are determined by electronic and chemical interactions and processes on a broad range of length and time scales. Dedicated photoelectron spectroscopy and spectromicroscopy experiments can provide important insights. We discuss some recent methodological developments with application to relevant questions in spintronics, and towards in-operando studies of resistive switching and electrochemical processes.

Helical locking of spin and momentum and prohibited backscattering are the key properties of topologically protected states. They are expected to enable novel types of information processing such as spintronics by providing pure spin currents, or fault tolerant quantum computation by using the Majorana fermions at interfaces of topological states with superconductors. So far, the required helical conduction channels used to realize Majorana fermions are generated through application of an axial magnetic field to conventional semiconductor nanowires. Avoiding the magnetic field enhances the possibilities for circuit design significantly. Here, we show that sub-nanometer wide electron channels with natural helicity are present at surface step-edges of the recently discovered topological insulator Bi14Rh3I9. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals the electron channels to be continuous in both energy and space within a large band gap of 200 meV, thereby, evidencing its non-trivial topology. The absence of these channels in the closely related, but topologically trivial insulator Bi13Pt3I7 corroborates the channels' topological nature. The backscatter-free electron channels are a direct consequence of Bi14Rh3I9's structure, a stack of 2D topologically insulating, graphene-like planes separated by trivial insulators. We report on the observation of photogalvanic effects in epitaxially grown Sb_2Te_3 three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators (TI). We show that asymmetric scattering of Dirac electrons driven back and forth by the terahertz electric field results in a dc electric current. Due to the "symmetry filtration" the dc current is generated in the surface electrons only and provides an opto-electronic access to probe the electric transport in TI, surface domains orientation and details of electron scattering even in 3D TI at room temperature where conventional surface electron transport is usually hindered by the high carrier density in the bulk.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is a powerful technique for the study of electronic structure, but it lacks a direct ability to study buried interfaces between two materials. We address this limitation by combining ARPES with soft x-ray standing-wave (SW) excitation (SWARPES), in which the SW profile is scanned through the depth of the sample. We have studied the buried interface in a prototypical magnetic tunnel junction La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrTiO3. Depth- and momentum-resolved maps of Mn 3d eg and t2g states from the central, bulk-like and interface-like regions of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 exhibit distinctly different behavior consistent with a change in the Mn bonding at the interface. We compare the experimental results to state-of-the-art density-functional and one-step photoemission theory, with encouraging agreement that suggests wide future applications of this technique., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures and Supplementary Information

Exclusive measurements of the quasi-free $pn \to pp\pi^0\pi^-$ reaction have been performed by means of $pd$ collisions at $T_p$ = 1.2 GeV using the WASA detector setup at COSY. Total and differential cross sections have been obtained covering the energy region $\sqrt s$ = (2.35 - 2.46) GeV, which includes the region of the ABC effect and its associated resonance structure. No ABC effect, {\it i.e.} low-mass enhancement is found in the $\pi^0\pi^-$-invariant mass spectrum -- in agreement with the constraint from Bose statistics that the isovector pion pair can not be in relative s-wave. At the upper end of the covered energy region $t$-channel processes for Roper, $\Delta(1600)$ and $\Delta\Delta$ excitations provide a reasonable description of the data, but at low energies the measured cross sections are much larger than predicted by such processes. Adding a resonance amplitude for the resonance at $m$=~2.37 GeV with $\Gamma$ =~70 MeV and $I(J^P)=~0(3^+)$ observed recently in $pn \to d\pi^0\pi^0$ and $pn \to d\pi^+\pi^-$ reactions leads to an agreement with the data also at low energies.

An exclusive measurement of the dd -> 3He n \pi 0 reaction was carried at a beam momentum of p = 1.2 GeV/c using the WASA-at-COSY facility. For the first time data on the total cross section as well as differential distributions were obtained. The data are described with a phenomenological approach based on a combination of a quasi-free model and a partial wave expansion for three-body reaction. The total cross section is found to be \sigma(tot) = (2.89 +- 0.01(stat) +- 0.06(sys) +- 0.29(norm)) \mu b. The contribution of the quasi-free processes (with the neutron being target or beam spectator) accounts for 38% of the total cross section and dominates the differential distributions in specific regions of the phase space. The remaining part of the cross section can be described within a partial wave decomposition indicating the significance of p-wave contributions in the final state., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

The presently world largest data sample of pi0 --> gamma e+e- decays containing nearly 5E5 events was collected using the WASA detector at COSY. A search for a dark photon U produced in the pi0 --> gamma U --> gamma e+e- decay from the pp-->pp\pi^0 reaction was carried out. An upper limit on the square of the U-gamma mixing strength parameter epsilon^2 of 5e-6 at 90% CL was obtained for the mass range 20 MeV

An exclusive measurement of the excitation function for the dd->3Heppi- reaction was performed at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY-Juelich with the WASA-at-COSY detection system. The data were taken during a slow acceleration of the beam from 2.185 GeV/c to 2.400 GeV/c crossing the kinematic threshold for the eta meson production in the dd->4He-eta reaction at 2.336 GeV/c. The corresponding excess energy with respect to the 4He-eta system varied from -51.4MeV to 22MeV. The integrated luminosity in the experiment was determined using the dd->3Hen reaction. The shape of the excitation function for the dd->3Heppi- was examined. No signal of the 4He-eta bound state was observed. An upper limit for the cross-section for the bound state formation and decay in the process dd->(4He-eta)bound->3Heppi- was determined on the 90% confidence level and it varies from 20nb to 27nb for the bound state width ranging from 5MeV to 35MeV, respectively., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

Exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurements of the basic double pionic fusion reactions pn -> dpi0pi0, pn -> d pi+pi- and pp -> dpi+pi0 have been carried out simultaneously over the energy region of the ABC effect using the WASA detector setup at COSY. Whereas the isoscalar reaction part given by the dpi0pi0 channel exhibits the ABC effect, i.e. a low-mass enhancement in the pipi-invariant mass distribution, as well as the associated resonance structure in the total cross section, the isovector part given by the dpi+pi0 channel shows a smooth behavior consistent with the conventional t-channel Delta Delta process. The dpi+pi- data are very well reproduced by combining the data for isovector and isoscalar contributions, if the kinematical consequences of the isospin violation due to different masses for charged and neutral pions are taken into account.

The production of Z0 bosons in the reaction ep -> eZ0p*, where p* stands for a proton or a low-mass nucleon resonance, has been studied in ep collisions at HERA using the ZEUS detector. The analysis is based on a data sample collected between 1996 and 2007, amounting to 496 pb-1 of integrated luminosity. The Z0 was measured in the hadronic decay mode. The elasticity of the events was ensured by a cut on eta_max < 3.0, where eta_max is the maximum pseudorapidity of energy deposits in the calorimeter defined with respect to the proton beam direction. A signal was observed at the Z0 mass. The cross section of the reaction ep -> eZ0p* was measured to be sigma(ep -> eZ0p*) = 0.13 +/- 0.06 (stat.) +/- 0.01 (syst.) pb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 0.16 pb. The magnitude of electron spin polarization in topologically protected surface states is an important parameter with respect to spintronics applications. In order to analyze the warped spin texture in Bi$_2$Te$_3$ thin films, we combine angle- and spin-resolved photoemission experiments with theoretical \textit{ab initio} calculations. We find an \textit{in-plane} spin polarization of up to $\sim$~45\% in the topologically protected Dirac cone states near the Fermi level. The Fermi surface of the Dirac cone state is warped and shows an \textit{out-of-plane} spin polarization of $\sim$~15\%. These findings are in quantitative agreement with dedicated simulations which find electron density of the Dirac cone delocalized over the first quintuple layer with spin reversal occurring in the surface atomic layer., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Measurements of neutral current cross sections for deep inelastic scattering in e+p collisions at HERA with a longitudinally polarised positron beam are presented. The single-differential cross-sections d(sigma)/dQ2, d(sigma)/dx and d(sigma)/dy and the reduced cross-section were measured in the kinematic region Q2 > 185 GeV2 and y < 0.9, where Q2 is the four-momentum transfer squared, x the Bjorken scaling variable, and y the inelasticity of the interaction. The measurements were performed separately for positively and negatively polarised positron beams. The measurements are based on an integrated luminosity of 135.5 pb-1 collected with the ZEUS detector in 2006 and 2007 at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV. The structure functions F3 and F3(gamma)Z were determined by combining the e+p results presented in this paper with previously published e-p neutral current results. The asymmetry parameter A+ is used to demonstrate the parity violation predicted in electroweak interactions. Exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurements of the double pionic fusion reaction $dd \to ^4$He$\pi^0\pi^0$ have been performed in the energy range 0.8 - 1.4 GeV covering thus the region of the ABC effect, which denotes a pronounced low-mass enhancement in the $\pi\pi$-invariant mass spectrum. The experiments were carried out with the WASA detector setup at COSY. Similar to the observation in the basic $pn \to d \pi^0\pi^0$ reaction, the data reveal a correlation between the ABC effect and a resonance-like energy dependence in the total cross section. The maximum occurs at m=2.37 GeV + 2$m_N$, i.e. at the same position as in the basic reaction. The observed resonance width $\Gamma \approx$ 160 MeV can be understood from broadening due to Fermi motion of the nucleons in initial and final nuclei together with collision damping. Differential cross sections are described equally well by the hypothesis of a $pn$ resonance formation during the reaction process.

Inclusive-jet cross sections have been measured in the reaction ep->e+jet+X for photon virtuality Q2 < 1 GeV2 and gamma-p centre-of-mass energies in the region 142 < W(gamma-p) < 293 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 300 pb-1. Jets were identified using the kT, anti-kT or SIScone jet algorithms in the laboratory frame. Single-differential cross sections are presented as functions of the jet transverse energy, ETjet, and pseudorapidity, etajet, for jets with ETjet > 17 GeV and -1 < etajet < 2.5. In addition, measurements of double-differential inclusive-jet cross sections are presented as functions of ETjet in different regions of etajet. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations give a good description of the measurements, except for jets with low ETjet and high etajet. The influence of non-perturbative effects not related to hadronisation was studied. Measurements of the ratios of cross sections using different jet algorithms are also presented; the measured ratios are well described by calculations including up to O(alphas2) terms. Values of alphas(Mz) were extracted from the measurements and the energy-scale dependence of the coupling was determined. The value of alphas(Mz) extracted from the measurements based on the kT jet algorithm is alphas(Mz) = 0.1206 +0.0023 -0.0022 (exp.) +0.0042 -0.0035 (th.); the results from the anti-kT and SIScone algorithms are compatible with this value and have a similar precision., Comment: 53 pages, 17 figures

The exclusive electroproduction of two pions in the mass range 0.4 < M{\pi}{\pi} < 2.5 GeV has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 82 pb-1. The analysis was carried out in the kinematic range of 2 < Q2 < 80 GeV2, 32 < W < 180 GeV and |t| < 0.6 GeV2, where Q2 is the photon virtuality, W is the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy and t is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The two-pion invariant-mass distribution is interpreted in terms of the pion electromagnetic form factor, |F(M{\pi}{\pi})|, assuming that the studied mass range includes the contributions of the {\rho}, {\rho}' and {\rho}" vector-meson states. The masses and widths of the resonances were obtained and the Q2 dependence of the cross-section ratios {\sigma}({\rho}' \rightarrow {\pi}{\pi})/{\sigma}({\rho}) and {\sigma}({\rho}" \rightarrow {\pi}{\pi})/{\sigma}({\rho}) was extracted. The pion form factor obtained in the present analysis is compared to that obtained in e+e- \rightarrow {\pi}+{\pi}-., Comment: 24 pages, including 11 figures
