Tropical forests face increasing climate risk1,2, yet our ability to predict their response to climate change is limited by poor understanding of their resistance to water stress. Although xylem embolism resistance thresholds (for example, Ψ50) and hydraulic safety margins (for example, HSM50) are important predictors of drought-induced mortality risk3-5, little is known about how these vary across Earth's largest tropical forest. Here, we present a pan-Amazon, fully standardized hydraulic traits dataset and use it to assess regional variation in drought sensitivity and hydraulic trait ability to predict species distributions and long-term forest biomass accumulation. Parameters Ψ50 and HSM50 vary markedly across the Amazon and are related to average long-term rainfall characteristics. Both Ψ50 and HSM50 influence the biogeographical distribution of Amazon tree species. However, HSM50 was the only significant predictor of observed decadal-scale changes in forest biomass. Old-growth forests with wide HSM50 are gaining more biomass than are low HSM50 forests. We propose that this may be associated with a growth-mortality trade-off whereby trees in forests consisting of fast-growing species take greater hydraulic risks and face greater mortality risk. Moreover, in regions of more pronounced climatic change, we find evidence that forests are losing biomass, suggesting that species in these regions may be operating beyond their hydraulic limits. Continued climate change is likely to further reduce HSM50 in the Amazon6,7, with strong implications for the Amazon carbon sink. Publisher PDF

Human activities pose a major threat to tropical forest biodiversity and ecosystem serv-ices. Although the impacts of deforestation are well studied, multiple land-use andland-cover transitions (LULCTs) occur in tropical landscapes, and we do not knowhow LULCTs differ in their rates or impacts on key ecosystem components. Here, wequantified the impacts of 18 LULCTs on three ecosystem components (biodiversity,carbon, and soil), based on 18 variables collected from 310 sites in the BrazilianAmazon. Across all LULCTs, biodiversity was the most affected ecosystem component,followed by carbon stocks, but the magnitude of change differed widely amongLULCTs and individual variables. Forest clearance for pasture was the most prevalentand high-impact transition, but we also identified other LULCTs with high impact butlower prevalence (e.g., forest to agriculture). This study brings information on the dynamics of C and N in urban forests in a subtropical region. We tested the hypothesis that C and N isotopic sign of leaves and soil and physiological traits of trees would vary from center to periphery in a megacity, considering land uses, intensity of automotive fleet and microclimatic conditions. 800 trees from four fragments were randomly chosen. Nhecolândia is a vast sub-region of the Pantanal wetland in Brazil with great diversity in surface water chemistry evolving in a sodic alkaline pathway under the influence of evaporation. In this region,15,000 shallow lakes are likely to contribute an enormous quantity of greenhouse gas to the atmosphere, but the diversity of the biogeochemical scenarios and their variability in time and space is a major challenge to estimate the regional contribution. From 4 selected alkaline lakes, we compiled measurements of the physico-chemical characteristics of water and sediments, gas fluxes in floating chambers, and sedimentation rates to illustrate this diversity. Although these lakes have a similar chemical composition, the results confirm a difference between the black-water and green-water alkaline lakes, corresponding to distinct biogeochemical functioning. Há uma intensificação nos processos de mudança associados aos sítios conchíferos do litoral catarinense a partir de 2000 AP, marcada por acontecimentos como a diminuição no número de sítios, a diminuição no uso de conchas em sua formação e o aparecimento da cerâmica. Com o objetivo de compreender melhor essas mudanças e entendendo o sítio Armação do Sul (Florianópolis/SC) como elemento chave para essa compreensão, foram realizadas análises isotópicas de estrôncio (87Sr/86Sr), carbono (δ13C) e nitrogênio (δ15N) nos indivíduos que nele se encontram sepultados, juntamente com o estabelecimento de uma cronologia estratigraficamente referenciada. Os resultados obtidos indicam que os processos de mudança se desenrolaram diferentemente em porções distintas do litoral catarinense e que, no caso do sítio Armação do Sul, as mudanças observadas estão relacionadas a um quadro que envolve maior circulação e incorporação de indivíduos de diferentes partes do litoral central e mudança na dieta dos indivíduos do sexo masculino. Abstract: There is an intensification in the processes of change associated with the shell-matrix sites of the Santa Catarina coast from 2000 BP onwards, marked by events such as the decrease in the number of sites, the decrease in the use of shells in their formation and the introduction of pottery. To better understand these changes, and taking the Armação do Sul site (Florianópolis/SC) as a key element in this understanding, we performed strontium (87Sr/86Sr), carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopic analyzes on the individuals buried there, together with the establishment of a stratigraphically referenced chronology. The results indicate that the processes of change occurred differently in different parts of the Santa Catarina coast and that, in the case of the Armação do Sul site, the observed changes are related to an increased circulation and incorporation of individuals from different parts of the central coast and dietary change in male individuals.

Situated in the fast-developing country of Brazil, the Atlantic rainforest Mata Atlântica faces risks generated by population growth-derived problems. Conversion of forest to agriculture has led to a mosaic landscape with fragments of secondary forest in agricultural land. This disturbance to a naturally well-adapted ecosystem prompts rapid soil degradation. Therefore, here we compared soil C incorporation into soil microorganisms and their turnover in typical land-use systems such as primary forest, secondary forest, and agricultural land at the Atlantic Plateau of Sao Paulo, Brazil. In C3 and C4 plants having different 13C/12C compositions, a C3–C4 vegetation change was induced using maize, a C4 plant. We measured the δ13C composition of individual phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) because PFLA are specific of typical microbes. Results show that statistical analysis of soil PLFA allow differentiation of four microbial units: (1) Gram-positive bacteria; (2) anaerobic Gram-positive bacteria; (3) fungi, vesicular–arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, and Gram-positive bacteria; and (4) actinomycetes and Gram-positive bacteria. We also found that soil organic matter is cycled for longer time in primary forest ecosystems, of mean turnover time of 28 years, than in agricultural ecosystems with mean turnover time of 4 years for organic farming and 8 years for conventional farming. Calculation of maize-derived carbon of each microbial unit suggested that fungi and vesicular–arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi dominate microbial activity in primary forest whereas Gram-negative bacteria are prominent in the agricultural sites. To conclude, we found that PLFA profiles are sensitive to land-use conversion, and their compound-specific stable-isotope analysis can strongly discriminate between different managements.

O ribeirão das Posses compõem o cenário do programa de Pagamento por Serviços Ambientais (PSA) do Conservador das Águas em Extrema Minas Gerais. Esta região faz parte da cabeceira das bacias dos rios Piracicaba, Capivari e Jundiaí, que abastecem 8 milhões de pessoas só na região metropolitana de São Paulo. Esse estudo teve como objetivo realizar um monitoramento ambiental multidisciplinar na microbacia do ribeirão das Posses integrando elementos qualitativos e quantitativos através do levantamento de dados de monitoramento hidrológico, Protocolo de Avaliação Rápida (PAR) e entrevista com os proprietários das áreas onde ocorre o fornecimento do serviço ecossistêmico (SE). Foram avaliados 14 trechos ao ribeirão e mais dois pontos nos trechos finais das microbacias vizinhas, ao longo de um ciclo hidrológico. Ao todo foram 13 campanhas de campo destinadas à coleta de amostras de água e material particulado em suspensão (MPS), e outras duas campanhas para aplicar o PAR e realizar as entrevistas. Durante o monitoramento hidrológico foram feitas 10 análises diferentes nas amostras de água e MPS, entre elas condutividade elétrica (CE), demanda bioquímica de oxigênio (DBO) e 13C e 15N. O PAR usou como base, protocolos bem consolidados para a região sudeste do Brasil e foi adaptado exclusivamente para a área estudada nesta pesquisa. As entrevistas foram guiadas por um questionário semiestruturado que tinha como objetivo tentar entender a visão ambiental dos provedores dos SE, além de tentar levantar informações que pudessem auxiliar na criação de indicadores socioambientais a partir de fatores como a motivação de participação e permanecer no programa, engajamento e visualização de resultados. Os resultados das análises indicam que no geral o ribeirão apresenta uma boa qualidade da água, dentro dos limites estabelecidos pela legislação (CONAMA 357/05), porém, fontes de poluição difusa oriundas de práticas inapropriadas de manejo de gado e pastagem impactam negativamente na qualidade da água em alguns trechos pontuais na microbacia, prejudicando a entrega dos SE. Os resultados isotópicos apontam que a cobertura do solo está de fato mudando, apontando uma tendência de maior contribuição das áreas florestais provenientes das atividades de restauração, contudo a contribuição do pasto no MPS ainda é bem predominante em algumas áreas. O solo é um recurso natural essencial à vida e é impactado pela atividade humana. Mais de 60% das emissões dos gases de efeito estufa (GEE) no Brasil estão relacionadas à mudanças no uso da terra e à agricultura. Neste sentido, a compreensão sobre a função do solo como dreno ou fonte de GEE relacionado aos diferentes sistemas de manejo é a base para subsidiar práticas sustentáveis no setor agrossilvipastoril, principalmente, em regiões de novas fronteiras agrícolas, como o Cerrado no leste maranhense. Assim, este estudo avaliou a emissão dos GEE (CO2, N2O e CH4) e as alterações no armazenamento de carbono (C) do solo em diferentes sistemas de manejo para a produção de soja. O estudo foi conduzido entre jul/2018 a jun/2019 no município de Brejo (MA), avaliando os seguintes sistemas de manejo: i) Sistema Plantio Convencional (SPC); ii) Sistema Integrado Lavoura-Pecuária com uma rotação de braquiária (ILP1), iii) Sistema Integrado Lavoura-Pecuária com duas rotações de braquiária (ILP2) e uma área referência sob Vegetação Nativa de Cerrado stricto sensu (VN). Os fluxos dos GEE foram coletados em câmaras estáticas e as concentrações determinadas por cromatografia gasosa; os estoques de C do solo foram obtidos de amostras indeformadas coletadas nas camadas do solo de 0-20 e 20-40 cm, nas quais foram determinadas a densidade aparente e a concentração de C por combustão seca em analisador elementar. A emissão acumulada de N-N2O foi maior no sistema ILP2 comparado aos demais sistemas avaliados, entretanto, não se verificou diferença estatística para a emissão de C-CO2 e de C-CH4. O estoque de carbono do solo foi de 47, 51 e 52 Mg ha-1 para o SPC, ILP1 e ILP2, respectivamente, na camada do solo de 0-40 cm. As taxas de acúmulo de C foram negativas no SPC, com perdas anuais de 0,20 Mg ha-1 ano-1, enquanto que a ILP1 e a ILP2 apresentaram acúmulo de 0,47 e 0,38 Mg ha-1 ano-1 respectivamente. Em termo de emissões líquidas de GEE pelo solo, a ILP1 apresentou o maior sequestro de C pelo solo de 0,47 Mg ha-1 ano-1 em Cequivalente (Ceq) seguida da ILP2 (0,31 Mg de Ceq ha-1 ano-1) e no SPC houve emissão líquida de GEE de 0,22 Mg de Ceq ha-1 ano-1. Considerando que das áreas utilizadas para produção agropecuária no Maranhão, somente 1,4% estão ocupadas com sistemas integrados de produção, a adoção da ILP nas condições edafoclimáticas da região representa um potencial de dreno de C atmosférico em relação ao SPC e contribui para a mitigação global de GEE pelo solo Soil is an essential natural resource for life and is impacted by human activity. More than 60% of greenhouse gas (GHG) calls in Brazil are related to changes in land use and agriculture. In this sense, an understanding of the function of the soil as a drain or source of GHG related to different management systems is a basis to support sustainable practices in the agroforestry sector, especially in regions with new agricultural frontiers, such as the Cerrado in eastern Maranhão. Thus, this study evaluated GHG emissions (CO2, N2O and CH4) and changes in soil carbon storage (C) in different management systems for soybean production. The study was conducted between Jul/2018 to Jun/2019 in the municipality of Brejo (MA), evaluating the following management systems: i) Conventional Planting System (CPS); ii) Integrated Crop-Livestock System with one rotation of brachiaria (ICL1) and iii) Integrated Crop-Livestock System with two rotations of brachiaria (ICL2) and also a reference area under Native Vegetation of Cerrado stricto sensu (NV). The GHG fluxes were carried out through collections in static chambers and the concentrations determined by gas chromatography; Soil C stocks were acquired from undisturbed samples in the 0-20 and 20-40 cm layers, where bulk density and C concentration were determined by dry combustion in an elemental analyzer. The accumulated emission of N-N2O was higher in the ICL2 system compared to the other systems evaluated, however, there was no statistical difference for the emission of C-CO2 and C-CH4. The soil carbon stock was 47, 51 and 52 Mg ha-1 for CPS, ICL1 and ICL2 respectively in the 0-40 cm deep layer of the soil, being found larger C stocks in the ILP. C accumulation rates were negative in CPS, with annual losses of 0.20 Mg ha-1 year-1, while ICL1 and ICL2 showed accumulation of 0.47 and 0.38 Mg ha-1 year-1, respectively. In terms of net GHG emissions from the soil, ICL1 had the highest soil C sequestration of 0.36 Mg ha-1 year-1 in Cequivalent (Ceq) followed by ICL2 (0.31 Mg Ceq ha-1 year-1) and in the CPS there was a net GHG emission of 0.22 Mg Ceq ha-1 year-1. Considering that of the areas used for agricultural production in Maranhão, only 1.4% are under some Integrated crop-livestock-forestry (ICLF) type, the adoption of ICL in the region\'s edaphoclimatic conditions represents a potential drain of atmospheric C in relation to the CPS, contributing to the mitigation of GHG by the soil

Brazil, as other countries, has established energy and climate policies that foster the use of biofuels as sugarcane ethanol, in which a growing practice is to use harvesting residues, the straw, for cogeneration of electricity or to produce second-generation ethanol. In this study, it was aimed to create machine learning (ML) models capable of predict short-term changes in the soil organic carbon stocks according to the mass of sugarcane straw leftover the soil during harvest. Considerations were also made on the current state of the art regarding the application of ML in soil science, with an emphasis on tropical soils and soil carbon stocks. The initial data was generated between 2015 and 2018 in five experimental sites under commercial cultivation of sugarcane in Brazilian south-central region and the available variables were related to climate, soil physical and chemical attributes, organic matter and crop variety. The variable to be predicted (y) was the rate of carbon stock change per area per year (Mg C ha-1 yr-1) in relation to the total dry mass of straw. The initial dataset was divided into training (80%) and test (20%) and eight ML models were trained using the algorithms Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) associated to four feature selection methods. Results were evaluated using 10-fold cross-validation of the root mean squared error (RMSE) in the training set and prediction RMSE in the test set. The trained models were statistically compared among them and to the use of mean y stratified by straw mass deposited and soil layer. All the ML models surpassed the simple generalization of previously known mean values of y. The model SVM associated with RF feature selection performed better with a considerable reduction in the number of attributes, which could reduce the costs and effort of data acquisition and processing in future applications. The achievements indicate that ML models are good tools to predict short-term changes in carbon stocks due to total or partial straw remotion from the field. The obtained results and applied methodology have the potential to help producers and decision-makers interested in identifying cause-effect relationships between in situ crop conditions, straw management and expected soil carbon variations. O Brasil estabeleceu políticas energéticas e climáticas que fomentam o uso de biocombustíveis como o etanol da cana-de-açúcar. Uma prática crescente é usar os resíduos da colheita, a palha de cana-de-açúcar, para cogeração de energia elétrica ou para produzir etanol de segunda geração. Neste estudo, objetivou-se prever mudanças de curto prazo nos estoques de carbono orgânico do solo de acordo com a massa de resíduos depositada na colheita utilizando técnicas de aprendizado de máquina (AM). Foram feitas também considerações sobre o atual estado da arte relativo à aplicação de AM nas ciências do solo, com ênfase em solos tropicais e estoques de carbono do solo. Os dados iniciais foram gerados entre 2015 e 2018 em cinco áreas de cultivo comercial de cana-de-açúcar na região centro-sul do Brasil e as variáveis disponíveis relacionam-se ao clima, atributos físicos e químicos do solo, matéria orgânica e variedade cultural. A variável predita (y) foi a taxa de variação do estoque de carbono por área por ano (Mg C ha-1 ano-1) em relação à massa seca total da palha. O conjunto de dados inicial foi dividido em treino (80%) e teste (20%) e oito modelos baseados em algoritmos de AM foram desenvolvidos utilizando Random Forest (RF) e Support Vector Machine (SVM) associados a quatro métodos de seleção de atributos. Os resultados foram avaliados pela raiz do erro quadrático médio (RMSE) com validação cruzada no conjunto treino e RMSE da predição no conjunto de teste. Os modelos treinados foram comparados com a adoção de valores médios de y estratificados por massa de palha depositada e camada de solo e entre eles (p < 0,05). Todos os modelos AM superaram a generalização de valores médios de y previamente conhecidos. O modelo SVM aplicado ao conjunto de atributos selecionado por RF apresentou melhor desempenho com redução considerável no número de atributos, o que poderia reduzir os custos e esforço de aquisição e processamento de dados em aplicações futuras. Conclui-se que modelos de AM são boas ferramentas para prever mudanças de curto prazo nos estoques de carbono devido à remoção total ou parcial da palha do campo. Os resultados obtidos e metodologia aplicada tem potencial de auxiliar produtores e gestores a identificar ralações de causa-efeito entre as condições locais de cultivo, o manejo da palhada adotado e as variações esperadas no carbono orgânico do solo.

O objetivo desse trabalho foi investigar o estoque de carbono e a qualidade da matéria orgânica do solo (MOS) após a conversão floresta-pastagem e floresta-soja, em Belterra-PA. Neste município predomina o clima quente e úmido, com temperatura média anual de 25,3°C e pluviosidade média anual de 1943 mm, concentrada entre janeiro a junho. O solo das áreas de estudo é classificado como Latossolo Amarelo distrófico muito argiloso. Nesta pesquisa foram investigadas: (i) uma área de soja conduzida em cultivo mínimo há oito anos; (ii) uma área de soja conduzida em cultivo mínimo há 18 anos; (iii) uma pastagem nominal (implantada há quatro anos, manejada com fogo, sem correção da fertilidade do solo e com manejo extensivo do rebanho); (iv) uma pastagem melhorada (implantada há seis anos, manejada com rotação de cultura e correção da fertilidade do solo por um período de três anos, posteriormente, permanecendo como pastagem homogênea, onde o rebanho bovino é manejado em sistema rotacionado); (v) uma área de floresta nativa, utilizada como referência. Em cada área de estudo foram coletadas amostras de solo em seis pontos diferentes, equidistantes 50 m. As amostras deformadas foram coletadas nas camadas 0-10, 10-20, 20-30, 30-50, 50-80, 80-100 cm e as amostras indeformadas até a camada 50 cm. Avaliou-se o teor de carbono, a densidade do solo, o estoque de carbono e a relação C:N. A abundância natural 13C:12C foi utilizada para estimar a incorporação de carbono oriundo de gramíneas nas áreas de pastagens. A qualidade da MOS foi avaliada pelo índice de humificação e pelo fracionamento físico da MOS. Os resultados foram submetidos à análise da variância e teste de Tukey (5%). Observou-se que a densidade do solo aumentou significativamente após a conversão de floresta para implantação de sistemas agropecuários. O estoque de carbono acumulado na camada 0-50 cm e o grau de humificação da MOS não diferiram entre as áreas. Este resultado foi influenciado pelo alto teor de argila presente no solo, fator que favorece a lenta decomposição da MOS, após mudança no uso da terra. Entre as áreas de sojicultura, o cultivo de 18 anos apresentou o menor índice de manejo do carbono, indicando perda de carbono no solo. Quanto à origem da matéria orgânica do solo, observou-se que a pastagem melhorada incorporou mais carbono oriundo de plantas C4, em relação à pastagem nominal, refletindo efeito positivo do melhoramento da pastagem. Em suma, as conversões floresta-pastagem e floresta-soja ocasionaram aumento da densidade do solo, mas tiveram baixo impacto no estoque de carbono no solo e na qualidade da matéria orgânica, devido a característica granulométrica do solo e pouco tempo de cultivo dos sistemas. Por isso, recomenda-se mais estudos a longo prazo para identificação dos efeitos dos manejos aplicados a tais áreas de produção The aim of this work was to investigate the carbon stock and soil organic matter (MOS) quality after the conversion from forest-pasture and forest-soybean in Belterra-PA. The climate there is hot and humid, and the annual average temperature is 25.3 °C, while rainfall averages are 1943 mm, concentrated between January and June. The soil of the region is classified as very clayey yellow Latosol. In this research we investigated: (i) a soybean areas in minimum tillage with similar managements - 18 years old; (ii) a soybean areas in minimum tillage with similar managements - 8 years old; (iii) a nominal pasture (implanted four years ago, managed with fire, without soil fertility correction and managed with extensive livestock) and an improved pasture (implanted six years ago, managed with crop rotation and soil fertility correction by a period of three years. Subsequently, it only remained homogeneous pasture, where the beef cattle herd is managed in a rotational system); (iv) an area of dense ombrophylous forest, used as the reference. Soil samples were collected at six different equidistant points every 50 m. Deformed samples were collected from 0-10, 10-20, 20-30, 30-50, 50-80, 80-100 cm depths and undisturbed samples were collect until 50 cm depth. We estimated the carbon content, soil density, carbon stocks and the C:N ratio. Natural abundance of 13C:12C was used to estimate the amount of carbon from grasses incorporated into the soil. The quality of the MOS was evaluated by humification index and by its physical fractionation. The same soil layers from different areas were compared by analysis of variance and Tukey test (5%). Both pastures were compared between them and in relation to forest area and soybean crops were also compared between them and the forest area. Soil bulk density increased significantly after forest to pasture conversion and forest to soybean conversion. The carbon stock accumulated in the 0-50 cm layer and the degree of humification of the MOS did not differ between the areas. This similarity may be the result of the high clay content presented in this soil, which leads to organic matter slow decomposition, even after changes in vegetation cover. On the soybean areas, the carbon management index was lower in the longer cultivated area, indicating a loss of carbon in this soil. On pasture areas, improved pasture incorporated more carbon from C4 plants in the soil in relation to the nominal pasture, reflecting a positive effect of the rational management on this production system

A tartaruga-verde (Chelonia mydas) ocupa diferentes habitats, com alternância de recursos alimentares ao longo de seu desenvolvimento. Embora apresente hábitos preferencialmente herbívoros a partir da fase juvenil nerítica, a espécie possui grande plasticidade alimentar, ingerindo também matéria animal. O método de análise dos conteúdos do trato gastrointestinal em conjunto à aplicação de análises de isótopos estáveis de ?13C e ?15N vem sendo amplamente utilizados na reconstrução da dieta de animais selvagens. O objetivo desse estudo foi determinar os padrões do consumo de alimentos por juvenis de C. mydas em Ubatuba-SP e Florianópolis-SC, bem como identificar a presença materiais antropogênicos no trato gastrointestinal desses organismos. Para este fim, foram necropsiados 34 animais em Ubatuba e 38 em Florianópolis, todos com morte recente. A análise do trato gastrointestinal mostrou que as algas, especialmente Sargassum sp. e Pterocladiella sp., compõem as maiores proporções de itens alimentares para os animais de ambas as regiões, embora também tenham sido encontradas conchas de moluscos (bivalves e gastrópodes), peixes, bicos de lula e material vegetal terrestre no trato gastrointestinal desses juvenis. A análise dos isótopos de ?¹³C e ?15N revelou que os animais de Ubatuba apresentam maior variedade na assimilação de itens alimentares, de forma que os tecidos de alguns animais refletiam mais matéria animal ou vegetal. Em contrapartida, os animais de Florianópolis assimilaram mais de 95% de matéria vegetal em seus tecidos, com pouca representatividade de matéria animal. A preferência alimentar de tartarugas-verdes por algas e fanerógamas as tornam mais propensas à ingestão de plásticos. Em Florianópolis, 86.8% dos animais apresentaram material antropogênico, e em Ubatuba essa porcentagem foi de 32.4% Apesar da presença de corda, linha de pesca, borracha, isopor e espuma, o plástico transparente foi o lixo encontrado em maiores proporções. Em Ubatuba, 72.7% dos animais ingeriram itens advindos de plásticos, enquanto em Florianópolis esses itens estavam presentes em 93.9% dos animais The green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) occupies different habitats alternating food resources throughout its development. Although effective, the foraging strategy of sea turtles implies a great risk of garbage ingestion. The method of analysis of the contents of the gastrointestinal tract and the application of stable isotope analyzes of ?13C and ?15N has been widely used in the reconstruction of the wild animals\' diet. The objective of this study was to determine the patterns of food intake by juveniles C. mydas in Ubatuba-SP and Florianópolis-SC, as well as to identify the presence of anthropogenic materials in the gastrointestinal tract of these organisms. Thirty-four animals were necropsied in Ubatuba and 38 in Florianópolis, all with recent death. Analysis of the gastrointestinal tract showed that algae, especially Sargassum sp. and Pterocladiella sp., made up the largest proportions of food items for the animals of both regions, although mollusk shells (bivalves and gastropods), fish, squid beaks and terrestrial plant material were also found in the gastrointestinal tract of these neritic juveniles. Analysis of the ?¹³C and ?15N isotopes revealed that the animals of Ubatuba showed greater variety in the assimilation of food items, so that the tissues of some animals reflected more animal or plant matter. However, the animals of Florianópolis assimilated more than 95% of plant matter in their tissues, with little representation of animal matter. The green turtles\' preference for algae and phanerogams makes them more prone to ingest plastics. In Florianópolis, 86.8% of the animals presented anthropogenic material, and in Ubatuba this percentage was 32.4%. Despite the presence of rope, fishing line, rubber, Styrofoam and foam, the transparent plastic was the garbage found in larger proportions. Aim Palms are an iconic, diverse and often abundant component of tropical ecosystems that provide many ecosystem services. Being monocots, tree palms are evolutionarily, morphologically and physiologically distinct from other trees, and these differences have important consequences for ecosystem services (e.g., carbon sequestration and storage) and in terms of responses to climate change. We quantified global patterns of tree palm relative abundance to help improve understanding of tropical forests and reduce uncertainty about these ecosystems under climate change. Location Tropical and subtropical moist forests. Time period Current. Major taxa studied Palms (Arecaceae). Methods We assembled a pantropical dataset of 2,548 forest plots (covering 1,191ha) and quantified tree palm (i.e., ≥10cm diameter at breast height) abundance relative to co‐occurring non‐palm trees. We compared the relative abundance of tree palms across biogeographical realms and tested for associations with palaeoclimate stability, current climate, edaphic conditions and metrics of forest structure. Results On average, the relative abundance of tree palms was more than five times larger between Neotropical locations and other biogeographical realms. Tree palms were absent in most locations outside the Neotropics but present in >80% of Neotropical locations. The relative abundance of tree palms was more strongly associated with local conditions (e.g., higher mean annual precipitation, lower soil fertility, shallower water table and lower plot mean wood density) than metrics of long‐term climate stability. Life‐form diversity also influenced the patterns; palm assemblages outside the Neotropics comprise many non‐tree (e.g., climbing) palms. Finally, we show that tree palms can influence estimates of above‐ground biomass, but the magnitude and direction of the effect require additional work. Conclusions Tree palms are not only quintessentially tropical, but they are also overwhelmingly Neotropical. Future work to understand the contributions of tree palms to biomass estimates and carbon cycling will be particularly crucial in Neotropical forests.

Latossolos são os solos mais representativos do Brasil, comumente associados a solos altamente intemperizados, profundos, e muito homogêneos. Essa homogeneização é atribuída ao processo de formação denominado bioturbação, que é a mistura de partículas do solo, inclusive fitólitos, que em condições tropicais são principalmente causadas pela ação de cupins, formigas, minhocas, e raízes de plantas. Os fitólitos são corpos de sílica opalina formados através da absorção do ácido monossilícico pelas raízes das plantas, que após a transpiração são polimerizados e tomam forma da célula ou tecido em que foram depositados. A análise fitolítica tem sido utilizada para reconstituições do clima, vegetação e ambientes pretéritos, pois sua composição (sílica biogênica) permite uma preservação nos solos, por longos períodos. Entretanto, as reconstituições paleoambientais realizadas em Latossolos têm sido contestadas devido à expressiva atividade biológica nesses solos, que podem \'pertubar\' a assembleia fitolítica colocando em dúvida a validade da técnica. Considerando a hipótese de que a bioturbação não é um processo homogêneo em todo o perfil, o estudo objetivou compreender a influência da atividade biológica na distribuição de fitólitos em dois Latossolos de texturas contrastantes. Os resultados obtidos para as análises químicas e físicas classificaram os solos em LATOSSOLO VERMELHO Distrófico típico (Perfil 1), e LATOSSOLO VERMELHO-AMARELO Distrófico típico (Perfil 2). Neste trabalho não foram feitas datações, impossibilitando o estabelecimento da cronologia dos eventos, porém as análises isotópicas e fitolíticas sugerem que estes solos foram formados sob vegetação mista de plantas do ciclo C3 e C4, com predomínio de plantas C3. As análises dos resultados não marcam mudanças climáticas, apenas oscilações de momentos mais secos que o atual. O protocolo adotado de observação e quantificação por área de feições biológicas em blocos e seções delgadas permitiu inferir que a bioturbação apresentou maior influência nos níveis do solo onde se constatou pela análise isotópica períodos em que as condições ambientais eram mais quentes e úmidas, esse comportamento refletiu na distribuição de fitólitos ao longo do perfil, com maiores concentrações de morfotipos em superfície e declínio com a profundidade. O contraste textural entre os solos estudados também promoveu diferenças na preservação dos fitólitos. No perfil de textura mais argilosa, os fitólitos apresentaram maior grau de preservação, em contrapartida, no perfil de textura média, e portanto menores teores de argila, óxidos de ferro e matéria orgânica, a superfície dos fitólitos estiveram mais expostas ao contato com os grãos de quartzo, favorecendo o ataque químico, fazendo com que nesse perfil os fitólitos fossem menos preservados. A presença de fitólitos corroídos em superfície e o aparecimento de fitólitos bem preservados em maiores profundidades indicou mistura causada pela bioturbação, mesmo em zonas onde a mesma foi menos expressiva. Por outro lado, mesmo com fortes indícios de mistura em atributos morfológicos, físicos e químicos a bioturbação não ocasionou alterações bruscas nas assembleias de fitólitos, indicando que os Latossolos mesmo sendo intensamente remodelados pela fauna edáfica e ação de raizes representam um bom registro de mudanças ambientais. Ferralsols are the most representative soils of Brazil, commonly associated weathered, deep, and very homogeneous soils. This homonegenization is attributed to the formation process called bioturbation, which is the mixture of the soil particles, including phytoliths, which in tropical conditions are mainly caused by action of termites, ants, eartworms, e plant roots. Phytoliths are opaline silica bodies formed by the uptake of monossilicic acid by plant roots, which after evapotranspiration are polymerized and take the form of the cell or tissue in which they were deposited. The phytolytic analysis has been used for reconstitutions of the climate, vegetation and past environments, since its composition (biogenic silica) allows a preservation in the soils, for long periods. However, the paleoenvironmental reconstitutions carried out in Ferralsols have been challenged due to the significant biological activity in these soils, which may \'disturb\' the phytolithic assembly, casting doubt on the validity of the technique. Considering the hypothesis that bioturbation is not a homogeneous process throughout the profile, the study aimed to understand the influence of biological activity on the distribution of phytoliths in two Latosols of contrasting textures. The results obtained for the chemical and physical analysis classified the soils in Rodhic Ferralsol (clayic, dystric) (profile 1), Haplic Ferralsol (loamic, dystric) (profile 2). In this work no dating was made, making it impossible to establish the chronology of the events, but the isotopic and phytolytic analyzes suggest that these soils were formed under mixed vegetation of C3 and C4 plants, with predominance of C3 plants. The analyzes of the results do not mark climatic changes, only oscillations of moments drier than the present one. Bioturbation showed greater influence in the soil in periods where the environmental conditions were hotter and wetter, this behavior reflected in the distribution of phytoliths along the profile, with higher concentrations of surface morphotypes and decline with depth. The textural contrast between the studied soils also promoted differences in the preservation of phytoliths. In the more clayey texture profile, the phytoliths presented a higher degree of conservation, in contrast, in the medium texture profile, and therefore lower levels of clay, iron oxides and organic matter, the phytoliths were more exposed to the contact of their surface with the with higher quartz grains, providing larger areas of contact for the chemical attack, making the phytoliths less preserved in this profile. The presence of corroded phytoliths on the surface and the appearance of well preserved phytoliths at greater depths indicated a mixture caused by bioturbation, even in areas where it was less expressive. On the other hand, even with strong mix of evidence in morphological attributes, physical and chemical bioturbation did not cause abrupt changes in phytoliths assemblies, indicating that Latosols even being intensively refurbished by the soil fauna and roots of action represent a good record of environmental changes .

A utilização de traçadores como os isótopos estáveis de carbono e nitrogênio, é crescente e complementa as técnicas convencionais nos estudos referentes à dieta em animais silvestres. Isso é possível pois o valor isotópico dos itens utilizados na alimentação é refletido nos tecidos. A diferença isotópica resultante chamada de fator de discriminação ou fracionamento, está associada aos processos metabólicos necessários para que ocorra a incorporação de nutrientes. O estudo teve como objetivo medir o tempo de incorporação dos isótopos no plasma e nas células sanguíneas, componentes de \"tecido\" não mortal reamostrável, e determinar o fator de discriminação em cinco espécies de quelônios de água doce: Podocnemis expansa (tartaruga-da-Amazônia), Podocnemis unifilis (tracajá), Phrynops geofroanus (cágado-de-barbicha), Trachemys scripta (tartaruga-de-orelha-vermelha) e Trachemys dorbigni (tigre-d\'água). Os animais foram mantidos em cativeiro e as diferenças isotópicas dos 10 indivíduos adultos de cada espécie, foram medidas a partir da troca de dietas com valores isotópicos distintos. Com a mudança da dieta, o turnover do carbono e nitrogênio foram estimados entre 7 e 185 dias por meio de regressão exponencial não linear, quando os novos fatores de fracionamento foram estimados. O tempo de turnover para as espécies de quelônios variou de 72 a 337 dias para o carbono, e de 29 a 270 dias para o nitrogênio no plasma. Nas células sanguíneas o turnover variou de 3 a 373 dias para o carbono, e de 51 a 216 dias para o nitrogênio. Os fatores de discriminação que eram em média próximos a zero para o carbono, e entre 3-4‰ para o nitrogênio, variaram de 1,01 a 3,28‰ para o 13C e -0,76 a 0,49‰ para o 15N no plasma, e de 1,49 a 3,98‰ para o 13C e 0,99‰ a 4,69 para o 15N nas células sanguíneas, com a diminuição de 3,7‰ e aumento de 6,2‰, respectivamente para carbono e nitrogênio, na nova dieta. A diferença encontrada entre os fatores de discriminação calculados anteriormente a troca da dieta e após a troca, mostraram que provavelmente a incorporação dos isótopos estáveis se dá de forma heterogênea nos tecidos. De acordo com a literatura foi possível analisar que fatores como a memória isotópica, as rotas metabólicas e elementos característicos dos répteis possivelmente estão ligados ao turnover mais lento, diferente dos animais endotérmicos em que esse processo é mais rápido. The use of tracers such as stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes is crescent and complements the conventional techniques used in the studies referring to the diet in wild animals. This is possible because the isotopic value of the items used in the diet reflects their isotopic values on the tissues. The resulting isotopic difference called the discrimination factor or fractionation is associated with the metabolic processes required for nutrient incorporation to occur. The object of the study was to measure the incorporation time of isotopes into plasma and blood cells, components of re-portable non-lethal \"tissue\", and to determine the discriminant factor of five species of freshwater chelonians: Podocnemis expansa (Amazonia tortoise), Podocnemis unifilis (tracajá), Phrynops geofroanus (geoffroy´s side necked turtle), Trachemys scripta (red-eared slider turtle) and Trachemys dorbigni (d\'orbigny\'s slider). The isotopic differences of 10 adult individuals of each species kept in captivity were measured through shifting diets with different isotopic values. With the diet variation, carbon and nitrogen turnover was estimated between 7 and 185 days by non-linear exponential regression, when the new fractionation factors were estimated. The turnover time for the chelonians species varied from 72 to 337 days for carbon, and from 29 to 270 days for the plasma nitrogen. In blood cells, the turnover ranged from 3 to 373 days for carbon, and from 51 to 216 days for nitrogen. Discrimination factors that were, in average, close to zero for carbon and between 3 and 4‰ for nitrogen ranged from 1.01 to 3.28‰ for 13C and -0.76 to 0.49‰ for 15N in plasma, and from 1.49 to 3.98‰ for 13C and 0.99 to 4.69 for 15N in blood cells, with a decrease of 3.7‰ and an increase of 6.2‰, respectively for carbon and nitrogen in the new diet. The difference found between the discrimination factors calculated before and after the diet shift, showed that stable isotopes incorporation probably occurs in a heterogenous way in tissues. According to the literature it was possible to analyze that factors such as isotopic memory, metabolic routes and reptiles characteristic elements are possibly linked to slower turnover, different from endothermic animals in which this process is faster.

The current concerning on potential effect of CO2 on climate change has assigned to the biomass of the tropical forest the importance as a sink of carbon. However, the heterogeneity of the natural ecosystems in tropics has significant implications for biomass estimation. This study proposed different biomass models using destructive sampling for the highly diverse Atlantic Forest. Models from two different approaches: generalized and species-specific were fitted and had the performance compared. Regarding the generalized models, it was proposed different covariates including diameter at breast height (dbh), height to the crown base, woody specific gravity (wsg) and functional plant traits. The species-specific models were fitted by linear mixed-models (LME) using species as a random effect and ordinary least square (OLS). The performance of all models and approaches were compared to existing models from the literature. Also, different estimates of biomass in stand- and forest-level, and the implications for carbon quantification were verified. Additionally, two methods for calibration for individual tree-level biomass model were proposed, and different strategies for tree selection were tested. The primary results show that the species-specific model using LME had better performance and can be used for the most abundant species, and models that include dbh, wsg, and plant traits are suitable for less abundant species. The calibration using the LME method in some cases can be used as an alternative for species that do not have a random effect presented here being a reasonable alternative for diverse tropical forests such as Atlantic Forest. Devido à atual preocupação do potencial efeito do CO2 nas mudanças climáticas atribuiu-se à biomassa das florestas tropicais uma grande importância como reservatório de carbono. No entanto, a heterogeneidade dos ecossistemas naturais nos trópicos tem significativas implicações para a estimativa de sua biomassa. O presente estudo propõe diferentes modelos de biomassa utilizando amostragem destrutiva para Mata Atlântica, uma floresta altamente diversa. Duas abordagens de modelos: generalizados e espécies-específicos foram ajustados e o desempenho comparado. Em relação aos modelos generalizados, foram testadas diferentes covariáveis, utilizando o diâmetro à altura do peito (dbh; em inglês), a altura da base da copa, densidade básica da madeira (wsg; em inglês) e os \"functional plant traits\". Os modelos espécies-específicos foram ajustados por modelos mistos lineares (LME; em inglês) utilizando as espécies como efeito aleatório e pelos mínimos quadrados (OLS; em inglês). O desempenho dos diferentes modelos e abordagens foi comparado ao desempenho de modelos existentes da literatura. Também foram verificadas diferentes estimativas de biomassa em nível de estande e floresta, assim como as implicações para a quantificação de carbono. Ainda, foram testados dois métodos de calibração para o modelo de biomassa em nível de árvore individual, variando o número de árvores e estratégias para seleção de árvores. Com base nos resultados, o modelo espécies-específicos usando LME apresentou melhor desempenho, podendo ser uma alternativa para as espécies mais abundantes, enquanto o modelo generalizado que inclui dbh, wsg e \"functional plant traits\" mostraram-se adequados para espécies menos abundantes. A calibração usando o método LME em alguns casos pode ser usada como uma alternativa para espécies que não possuem equação específica, sendo uma alternativa razoável para florestas tropicais altamente diversas, como a Mata Atlântica.

A análise das oscilações dos estoques de biomassa em florestas tropicais permite descrever o comportamento desses ecossistemas diante de alterações naturais ou antropogênicas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o estoque e a dinâmica de biomassa no período (2007-2010) em Floresta Ombrófila Densa de duas áreas de pesquisa na FLONA - Tapajós: Amazônia oriental, denominadas Área 1 e Área 2, distantes aproximadamente 45 km uma da outra. A biomassa foi estimada através de equação alométrica e medidas de DAP, proveniente de 12 parcelas permanentes, sendo 6 em cada área. Os resultados mostraram que houve diferença significativa no estoque médio anual de biomassa entre a Área 1 (293,19 ± 27,74; 298,21 ± 31,73; 299,60 ± 29,46; 298,11 ± 29,40 Mg.ha-1) e a Área 2 (254,35 ± 69,61; 259,10 ± 70,05; 261,00 ± 69,43; 248,92 ± 61,78 Mg.ha-1). Notou-se variação anual no estoque de biomassa em intervalos de medições superiores a um ano, devido às oscilações na taxa de mortalidade, recrutamento e incremento, além da área basal e abundância dos indivíduos em cada área. A maior concentração de indivíduos ocorreu nas classes diamétricas 10 ≤ DAP ≤ 30 cm, porém, verificou-se que os indivíduos com DAP ≥ 60 cm em concentração menor estocam biomassa equivalente à da classe diamétrica 10 ≤ DAP ≤ 30 cm. Concluiu-se que as oscilações na taxa de mortalidade, recrutamento e incremento, além da abundância e área basal nestes locais afetaram os estoques de biomassa. Com o objetivo principal de aumentar a quantidade e qualidade dos produtos agrícolas, cada vez mais está-se empregando agrotóxicos, substâncias tóxicas as quais provocam problemas de saúde ambiental e pública. Frente a esse crescente emprego de agrotóxicos propõe-se, no presente trabalho, determinar-se as concentrações de agrotóxicos usados na lavoura da cana-de-açúcar - ametrina, ácido 2,4 D, tebuthiuron, hexazinona, diuron e fipronil, assim como os organoclorados - BHC, aldrin, endossulfan, dieldrin, endrin e DDT, cujos resíduos podem estar presentes nas águas dos rios que abastecem a cidade de Araraquara (Ribeirão das Cruzes, Ribeirão das Anhumas e Córrego do Paiól), região esta altamente agrícola, com cultivo intensivo de cana-de-açúcar. Avaliou-se, também, a metodologia mais eficiente na extração e análise de multiresíduos de agrotóxicos em diversas matrizes aquosas. Como técnicas de extração estudou-se a extração líquido-líquido, extração em fase sólida e extração com fluido supercrítico. Já como técnica de análise empregou-se a cromatografia sendo que para analitos voláteis ou parcialmente voláteis utilizou-se a cromatografta gasosa (HRGC) e para compostos menos voláteis a cromatografia líquida (HPLC). Amostras de água provenientes de vários pontos de captação foram analisadas empregando a metodologia desenvolvida. Dentre as três técnicas avaliadas, os melhores resultados foram obtidos empregando-se a extração em fase sólida. Não foram registrados nenhum dos compostos estudados nas amostras reais de água do Ribeirão das Cruzes, Ribeirão das Anhumas e Córrego do Paiól. Pesticides are being used more and more with the main objective to increase the quantity and quality of agricultural products; they are toxic substances that cause public and environmental health problems. Because of this increasing use of pesticides, this thesis aimed to determine the concentraction of both pesticides widely used in sugar cane plantation - ametrina, ácido 2,4 D, tebuthiuron, hexazinona, diuron e fipronil, as well as organochlorine BHC, aldrin, endossulfan, dieldrin, endrin e DDT in water samples. The residues of pesticides can be present in rivers that supply the city of Araraquara (Ribeirão das Cruzes, Ribeirão das Anhumas and Córrego do Paiól); this area is highly agricultural and it has a high sugar cane cultivation. The most efficient methodology for the extraction and analysis of multiresidues of pesticides in several fountains has been evaluated. Liquid-liquid extraction, solid phase extraction and supercritical fluid extraction have been studied as extraction teclmiques. Gas chromatography (HRGC) was used for the determination of partially volatile analites and liquid chromatography (HPLC) was employed for less volatile compounds. Samples of water originating from several reception points were analyzed using the developed methodology. Among the three appraised techniques, the best results were obtained being used the solid phase extraction. They were not registered none of the compositions studied at the real samples of water of Ribeirão das Cruzes, Ribeirão das Anhumas and Córrego do Paiól.

The mixture of herbicides is a widely used technique in weed control in several crops, including maize. However, interactions that might potentially result from mixing herbicides are a matter of constant concern and research. Soils are ideal settings to study transport and behavior of herbicides along gradients of physicochemical properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate sorption-desorption, leaching mineralization, biodegradation, and microbial respiration of mesotrione applied alone and mixed with S-metolachlor + terbuthylazine in samples from Brazilian sites cultivated with maize. The sorption-desorption of 14C-labeled [cyclohexane-2-14C] mesotrione was evaluated using the batch method, leaching was in glass columns, mineralization and degradation experiments were conducted using biometric flask, and microbial respiration was established according to the soil microorganisms: carbon transformation test with 14C-glucose solution in biometric flasks as well. Sorption of mesotrione applied alone and mixed had Kd sorption coefficient) values ranging from 0.08 to 5.05 kg L-1 and from 0.09 to 5.20 kg L-1, respectively, with similar behavior across soils. Mesotrione sorption was influenced primarily by the clay mineral (CM) content and the soil pH. Leaching of mesotrione is relatively high in the tropical soils and correlates with the pH (R2 = -0.84) and CM content (R2 = 0.75) and may pose a potential groundwater contamination risk. From the 49 d laboratory incubation data, increased mineralization half-life of mesotrione were observed for the mixture of herbicides, ranging from a 4 d increase for the sandy loam soil to a 1 d increase in the sandy clay texture soils. Mesotrione degradation rate had a 2-fold increase in the sandy loam compared to the sandy clay soil. Two metabolites can be identified from mesotrione degradation, 4-methyl-sulfonyl-2-nitrobenzoic acid (MNBA) and 2-amino-4-methylsulfonyl benzoic acid (AMBA). For unamended soil - control (without herbicide), microbial activity followed similar behavior to amended soil with herbicides in total 14CO2 released and accumulated, ranging from 23 to 27%. The mode of application of mesotrione did not influence sorption, desorption or leaching. Mesotrione sorption was relatively low in soils, which creates the high potential for leaching in maize producing areas. Thus, recommendations for mesotrione application, without the prior knowledge of the soil physical and chemical properties can result in an inefficient weed control. Mesotrione biotransformation was relatively quick, indicating this herbicide has low persistence, and consequently, low residual effect on crops and weeds when present in similar soils to this present study. Microbial respiration for all treatments was slightly higher in the sandy clay compared with sandy loam soil; although soil samples with application of herbicides (alones and in a mixture) did not have decreased basal microbial respiration or mineralization rate of glucose A mistura de herbicidas é uma técnica amplamente utilizada no controle de plantas daninhas em diversas culturas, incluindo o milho. No entanto, as interações que podem potencialmente resultar da mistura de herbicidas são uma questão de constante preocupação e pesquisa. Os solos são os locais ideais para estudar o transporte e o comportamento de herbicidas ao longo dos gradientes de propriedades físico-químicas. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a sorção-dessorção, lixiviação, mineralização, biodegradação e respiração microbiana do mesotrione aplicado isolado e misturado com S-metolachlor + terbuthylazine em amostras de locais brasileiros cultivados com milho. A sorção-dessorção do mesotrione 14C-marcado [ciclohexano-2-14C] foi avaliada utilizando o método de lote, a lixiviação foi em colunas de vidro, experimentos de mineralização e de degradação foi realizados utilizando frascos biométricos e a respiração microbiana foi estabelecida de acordo com os microorganismos do solo: teste de transformação de carbono com uma solução de 14C-glicose em frascos biométricos também. A sorção do mesotrione aplicado isolado e misturado apresentou valores de Kd (coeficiente de sorção) varando de 0,08 à 5,05 kg L-1 e de 0,09 à 5,20 kg L-1, respectivamente, com comportamento semelhante nos solos. A sorção do mesotrione foi influenciada principalmente pelo teor de argila mineral (CM) e o pH do solo. A lixiviação do mesotrione é relativamente elevada nos solos tropicais e correlaciona-se com o pH (R2 = -0,84) e teor de CM (R2 = 0,75) e pode representar um potencial risco de contaminação das águas subterrâneas. A partir dos dados de laboratório de 49 dias de incubação, o aumento da meia-vida de mineralização do mesotrione foi observado para a mistura de herbicidas, variando de um aumento de 4 dias do solo franco-arenoso para um aumento de 1 dia nos solos de textura argilo-arenosa. A taxa de degradação do mesotrione apresentou um aumento de 2 vezes no franco-arenoso em relação ao solo de textura argilo-arenosa. Dois metabólitos podem ser identificados a partir de degradação do mesotrione, o ácido 4-metil-sulfonil-2-nitrobenzóico (MNBA) e 2-amino-4-metilsulfonil benzóico (AMBA). Para o solo sem alterações - controle (sem aplicação de herbicida), a atividade microbiana seguiu comportamento similar ao solo tratado com herbicidas no total de 14CO2 liberado e acumulado, variando de 23 a 27%. O modo de aplicação do mesotrione não influenciou a sorção, dessorção ou lixiviação. A sorção do mesotrione foi relativamente baixa nos solos, que gera alto potencial de lixiviação em áreas produtoras de milho. Assim, as recomendações para a aplicação do mesotrione, sem o conhecimento prévio das propriedades físicas e químicas do solo podem resultar em um ineficiente controle de plantas daninhas. A biotransformação do mesotrione foi relativamente rápida, indicando que este herbicida tem baixa persistência, e, consequentemente, baixo efeito residual sobre as culturas e plantas daninhas, quando presentes em solos semelhantes ao presente estudo. A respiração microbiana em todos os tratamentos foi ligeiramente superior no argilo-arenoso em comparação com o solo franco-arenoso; embora as amostras de solo com aplicação de herbicidas (isolados e em uma mistura) não têm diminuído a respiração microbiana basal ou a taxa de mineralização da glicose

O lagarto teiú Salvator merianae pertence à família TEIIDAE, são animais forrageadores ativos e alimentam-se principalmente de insetos quando filhotes, e onívoros quando jovens e adultos. Na região sudeste do Brasil S. merianae apresenta um ciclo anual de atividade durante o verão e inatividade durante o inverno, assim, estudar esse modelo de animal é de extrema importância, pois, se trata de uma espécie que obedece a um ciclo de ajustes fisiológicos distintos que podem influenciar a taxa de turnover e o fator de discriminação isotópico. Foram coletados dados de 26 indivíduos juvenis e 11 adultos. A delta13C das células vermelhas inicial não apresentou diferença entre juvenis e adultos, no entanto para o plasma foram distintos. Essa diferença pode ter ocorrido porque a dieta ao longo de suas vidas não era homogênea. A delta15N das células vermelhas e do plasma foram distintos entre os juvenis e adultos. A diferença encontrada pode ser atribuída a modelos de balanço nitrogenado distintos. Foi apontado a comparação entre os períodos de pré-dormência e despertar da dormência sazonal, a fim de verificar se a utilização das reservas endógenas poderia influenciar os dados iniciais. A delta13C das células vermelhas dos juvenis e dos adultos não foram diferentes entre os períodos. Entretanto, a delta15N dos juvenis foi distinto e similar para os adultos. O plasma se comportou de forma similar as células vermelhas para a delta13C nos juvenis e adultos. Todavia o nitrogênio do plasma se anotou distintos, sendo o período de despertar enriquecido tanto para os juvenis como adultos. Desta forma, a espécie utilizou um misto da reserva lipídica e aminoácidos endógenos na produção de energia diante de uma taxa metabólica muito baixa. As taxas de turnover das células vermelhas para 13C e 15N dos juvenis e dos adultos foram 79,57 e 34,88 dias e 66,84 e 43,38 dias respectivamente, porém o plasma foi mais rápido sendo, 41,64 e 20,83 dias e 38,77 e 22,78 dias respectivamente. Os valores de Delta13C das células vermelhas dos juvenis e dos adultos 1,43? e 1,25 ?, e Delta13C do plasma apresentaram os valores de 2,10? e 1,87? na ordem. O do Delta15N das células vermelhas dos juvenis e dos adultos foram 3,05? e 3,44?, seguido dos valores de Delta15N do plasma 3,93? e 4,34?. Todos os valores não apontaram um padrão entre os táxons da literatura devido influências peculiares que podem ser intrínsecos entre as espécies. Houve uma correlação entre o índice de massa corpórea com o Delta13C do plasma dos juvenis e com os Delta13C das células vermelhas e plasma e Delta15N das células vermelhas dos adultos. Essa correlação parece estar relacionada com uma possível intolerância aos carboidratos provenientes da dieta. No entanto o Delta15N do plasma parece estra relacionado com a entrada de reserva endógena e o controle do catabolismo. Juvenis e adultos, machos e fêmeas mostraram semelhança em todas as comparações. Esse resultado era esperado porque no final do experimento os indivíduos juvenis se enquadravam em sub-adultos e a alocação para reprodução ter sua maior contribuição da fonte endógena. The tegu lizard Salvator merianae belongs to the TEIIDAE family. They are active foraging animals that feed mainly on insects when cubs, becoming omnivores when they reach youth and adulthood. In the Southeastern of Brazil, S. merianae presents an annual cycle of activity during the summer and inactivity during the winter. Thereupon, studying this animal is extremely important, since it\'s a species that obeys a cycle of physiological adjustments which may influence the turnover rate and the isotopic discrimination factor. Data were collected from 26 juveniles and 11 adults. The delta13C of the red cells didn\'t present difference between juveniles and adults; however these values were different for plasma. This difference may have occurred because the diet throughout their lives was not homogeneous. The delta15N of red cells and plasma were distinct between juveniles and adults. The difference found can be attributed to different nitrogen balance models. It was pointed out the comparison between the periods of pre-dormancy and awakening of the seasonal dormancy, in order to verify if the use of the endogenous reserves could influence the initial data. The delta13C of the red cells of juveniles and adults was not different between periods. However, the delta15N of juveniles was distinct and similar for adults. Plasma behaved similarly to red cells for delta13C in juveniles and adults. Meanwhile, the nitrogen of plasma was distinct and the arousal period was enriched for both juveniles and adults. The species used a mixture of its own lipid reserves and endogenous amino acids for the energy production before a very low metabolic rate. Red cell turnover rates for 13C and 15N of juveniles and adults were 79.57 and 34.88 days and 66.84 and 43.38 days, respectively. Nonetheless, the plasma rate was faster as the values found were 41.64 and 20.83 days and 38.77 and 22.78 days. The Delta13C values of red cells for juveniles and adults were 1.43? and 1.25?, and the Delta13C values of plasma were 2.10? and 1.87? respectively. The Delta15N values of red cells for juveniles and adults were 3.05? and 3.44 ?, followed by Delta15N values of 3.93? and 4.34? for plasma. All values didn\'t indicate a pattern among the taxa due to peculiar influences that may be intrinsic among the species. There was a correlation between body mass index and Delta13C values for juvenile plasma and Delta13C of red cells and plasma, as well as Delta15N values for red cells in adults. This correlation seems to be related to a possible intolerance to dietary carbohydrates. However, the Delta15N of plasma appears to be related to endogenous reserve inflow and catabolism control. Juveniles and adults, males and females showed similarity in all comparisons. This result was expected because at the end of the experiment juveniles could be classified as sub-adults and the allocation for reproduction had its greatest contribution from the endogenous source

Soil organic matter (SOM) plays an important role in the global carbon cycle. Therefore, it is important to understand the stability of SOM, which is related to several processes. Its intrinsic properties may be related to its stability, for example black carbon is considered to be relatively resistant to degradation. In most soils, the dark horizons coincide with the superficial layers or horizons due to the greater accumulation of organic matter, but in the southern states of Brazil, the presence of soils with dark subsurface horizons is frequently observed. The dark subsurface horizon of these soils are similar to a sombric horizon. Aspects about its origin, formation and preservation have not yet been fully elucidated. The objective of this work is to understand the formation of \'sombric\' horizons in soils of the region from Tijucas do Sul (Paraná, Brazil). Five soil profiles were described and collected, from which three originate from a toposequence and contained a \'sombric\' horizon (P1-P3), a reference soil that is representative of the area (P5) and an intermediate soil (P4) that showed morphology between the reference soil and the soils with a \'sombric\' horizon. To this end SOM is studied for its molecular composition by the pyrolysis technique coupled to gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (pyrolysis-GC-MS). In addition, 13C isotopic composition (δ13C) and phytolytic composition were studied in order to understand paleoclimatic conditions. These results will be related to past environmental conditions using 14C dating techniques, and supported by classical soil analysis. The samples of the horizons were submitted to the SOM chemical fractionation, generating two fractions: extractable fraction with NaOH (EXT) and residue (RES). The morphology of the profiles showed an intense biological activity in A horizons and a wide distribution of microfragments of charcoals. The lateral continuity of \'sombric\' horizons in toposequence soils was also observed, which differentiated them (P1-P3) from buried A horizons. The distribution of SOM in the fractions studied was the same for the five profiles studied: EXT> RES. Products related to wildfires such as polyaromatics (PAHs; BC) were found in all profiles, but in greater relative abundance in the \'sombric\' horizons, indicating a higher incidence of fire during the formation of these horizons and these compounds can be related to the maintenance of dark color of the \'sombric\' horizons. In relation to the paleoclimatic conditions it was observed that the dark subsurface horizons were developed during the Mid-Holocene under vegetation composed mainly by C4 grasses with shrubs, evidencing a drier climate corresponding to a higher fire incidence. A matéria orgânica do solo (MOS) desempenha um papel importante no ciclo global do carbono. Portanto, é importante entender a estabilidade da MOS, que está relacionada a vários processos. As suas propriedades intrínsecas podem estar relacionadas com a sua estabilidade, por exemplo, o \"black carbon\" é considerado relativamente resistente à degradação. Na maioria dos solos, os horizontes escuros coincidem com as camadas ou horizontes superficiais devido ao maior acúmulo de matéria orgânica, mas nos estados do sul do Brasil, a presença de solos com horizontes subsuperficiais escurecidos é frequentemente observada. O horizonte subsuperficial escurecido destes solos assemelha-se a um horizonte sômbrico. Aspectos sobre sua origem, formação e preservação ainda não foram totalmente elucidados. O objetivo deste trabalho é compreender a formação de horizontes \'sômbricos\' em solos da região de Tijucas do Sul (Paraná, Brasil). Foram descritos e coletados cinco perfis de solo, dos quais três estão localizados em uma topossequência e continham um horizonte similar ao sômbrico (P1-P3), um solo de referência representativo da área (P5) e um solo intermediário (P4) que apresentou uma morfologia entre o solo de referência e os solos com horizonte \'sômbrico\'. Para este fim, a MOS foi estudada pela sua composição molecular através da técnica de pirólise acoplada à cromatografia gasosa e espectrometria de massa (pirólise-GC-MS). Além disso, estudou-se a composição isotópica 13C (δ 13C) e a composição fitolítica, a fim de compreender as condições paleoclimáticas que foram relacionados com as condições ambientais passadas usando técnicas de datação com 14C, e suportados pelas análises clássicas de solo. As amostras dos horizontes foram submetidas ao fracionamento químico MOS, gerando duas frações: fração extraível com NaOH (EXT) e resíduo (RES). A morfologia dos perfis mostrou uma intensa atividade biológica nos horizontes A e uma ampla distribuição de microfragmentos de carvão. Observouse também a continuidade lateral de horizontes \'sômbricos\' em solos da topossequência (P1-P3), diferenciando-os dos horizontes A enterrados. A distribuição da MOS nas frações estudadas pela pirólise foi a mesma para os cinco perfis: EXT> RES. Os produtos relacionados a incêndios florestais como os poliaromáticos (PAHs, BC) foram encontrados em todos os perfis, mas em maior abundância relativa nos horizontes sômbricos, indicando uma maior incidência de incêndio durante a formação destes horizontes. Os PAHs podem estar relacionados com a manutenção da cor escura dos horizontes \'sômbricos\'. Em relação às condições paleoclimáticas observou-se que os horizontes subsuperficiais escurecidos foram desenvolvidos durante o Holoceno Médio sob vegetação composta principalmente por gramíneas C4 com arbustos, evidenciando um clima mais seco correspondente a maior incidência de incêndio.
