2. The composition of massive white dwarfs and their dependence on the C-burning modeling

Abstract

Recent computations of the interior composition of ultra-massive white dwarfs (WD) have suggested that some white dwarfs could be composed of neon (Ne)-dominated cores. This result is at variance with our previous understanding of the chemical structure of massive white dwarfs, where oxygen is the predominant element. In addition, it is not clear whether some hybrid carbon (C) oxygen (O)-Ne white dwarfs might form when convective boundary mixing is accounted for during the propagation of the C-flame, in the C-burning stage. Both Ne-dominated and hybrid CO-Ne core would have measurable consequences for asteroseismological studies based on evolutionary models. In this work we explore in detail to which extent differences in the adopted micro- and macro-physics can explain the different final white dwarf compositions that have been found by different authors. Additionally, we explored the impact of such differences in the cooling times, crystallization and pulsational properties of pulsating WDs. We explore the impact of the intensity of convective boundary mixing during the C-flash, extreme mass-loss rates, and the size of the adopted nuclear networks on the final composition, age, crystallization and pulsational properties of white dwarfs. Based on the insight coming from 3D hydro-dynamical simulations, we expect that the very slow propagation of the carbon flame will be altered by turbulent entrainment affecting the inward propagation of the flame. Also, we find that Ne-dominated chemical profiles of massive WDs recently reported appear in their modeling due to the overlooking of a key nuclear reaction. We find that the inaccuracies in the chemical composition of ultra-massive white dwarfs recently reported lead to differences of 10% in the cooling times and degree of crystallization and about 8% in the period spacing of the models once they reach the ZZ Ceti instability strip., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

Introduction: Most of the pregnant women do not achieve the recommended dietary intake of vitamins A and E. These vitamins may counteract oxidative stress involved in some adverse perinatal outcomes. We aimed to assess the associations between maternal vitamin A and E at mid-pregnancy with both maternal and fetal outcomes and to identify possible early biomarkers during pregnancy to predict and prevent oxidative stress in the offspring. Methods: Data on dietary and serum levels of vitamins A and E were collected from 544 pregnant women from the Nutrition in Early Life and Asthma (NELA) study, a prospective mother-child cohort set up in Spain. Results: There were large discrepancies between low dietary vitamin E intake (78% of the mothers) and low serum vitamin E levels (3%) at 24 weeks of gestation. Maternal serum vitamins A and E at mid-pregnancy were associated with higher antioxidant status not only in the mother at this time point (lower hydroperoxides and higher total antioxidant activity [TAA]) but also with the newborn at birth (higher TAA). Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) was negatively associated with maternal serum vitamin A (OR: 0.95 CI: 0.91–0.99, p = 0.009) at mid-pregnancy. Nevertheless, we could not detect any association between GDM and oxidative stress parameters. Conclusions: In conclusion, maternal vitamin A and E serum levels may be used as an early potential biomarker of antioxidant status of the neonate at birth. Control of these vitamins during pregnancy could help avoid morbid conditions in the newborn caused by oxidative stress in GDM pregnancies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

34. Electrical Model and Electrical Temperature- Dependent Model for Electrospray Thrusters

Abstract

This article presents two equivalent electrical models of electrospray thrusters verified with experimental data. The first model presented in this article aims to improve the electrospray thruster representation in HV-dc/dc converter's steady-state and closed feedback-loop response simulations since it is one of the most critical subsystems of an electrospray propulsion system. The proposed model, adapted from cold cathode fluorescents lamps (CCFLs) models, is composed of basic electrical elements (resistors, capacitors, and diodes), and it is implemented in SIMULINK/MATLAB. The model parameters are extracted from experimental data, and it is possible to export them to any electrical simulation tool. The second model incorporates temperature dependencies based on electrospray physics to predict the thruster's behavior within an experimental data set. The absolute error between the experimental and simulated data is less than two microamps for the nontemperature-dependent model and two and five-tenths microamps for the temperature-dependent model in the thruster's operating range. Besides, the relative error is less than 4% for the nontemperature-dependent model and less than 8% in the thruster's operating range for the temperature-dependent model. A comparison with previous models is quantified showing that the models presented in this article are a better approximation, validating the proposed models.

Abstract

Introduction In clinical trials with hepatitis C virus-infected treatment-naive (TN) patients with compensated cirrhosis (CC), glecaprevir/pibrentasvir (G/P), a fixed-dose, once-daily, pangenotypic regimen, has demonstrated sustained virologic response at posttreatment Week 12 (SVR12) > 95%. We evaluated the real-world safety and effectiveness of 8-week G/P therapy in TN patients with CC, including certain subgroups of interest. Methods The CREST study is a real-world, noninterventional, multicenter study retrospectively assessing data from Canada, Germany, Israel, Italy, and Spain. The full analysis set (FAS) designated all patients in the study; the modified analysis set (MAS) excluded patients who discontinued G/P for nonvirologic failure or who had missing SVR12 data. The primary endpoint was SVR12; safety endpoints were also assessed. Results A total of 386 patients were included in the FAS, 375 patients completed the study, and 325 patients were included in the MAS; 51 patients had missing SVR12 data. Overall, in the MAS and FAS, SVR12 was achieved in 99.1% and 84.2% of patients, respectively. In subgroups of interest, the percentage of patients achieving SVR12 in the MAS (and FAS) was: genotype (GT)3: 97.5% (80.6%); FibroScan(R) >= 12.5 kPa: 98.9% (89.3%); platelet count < 100 x 10(9)/l: 100% (88.2%); both platelets < 150 x 10(9)/l and FibroScan(R) > 20 kPa: 100% (88.9%); aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index > 1.09: 98.7% (83.1%); fibrosis-4 index > 3.25: 98.6% (84.0%); albumin < 3 g/dl: 100% (91.7%); people who use drugs: 97.7% (84.3%); psychiatric disorders: 96.6% (84.8%); and human immunodeficiency virus coinfection: 100% (95.0%). Overall, 26.9% (104/386) of patients experienced an adverse event, none of which were classed as serious. Abstract

Clinical populations have memory deficits linked to sleep oscillations that can potentially be treated with sleep medications. Eszopiclone and zolpidem (two non-benzodiazepine hypnotics) both enhance sleep spindles. Zolpidem improved sleep-dependent memory consolidation in humans, but eszopiclone did not. These divergent results may reflect that the two drugs have different effects on hippocampal ripple oscillations, which correspond to the reactivation of neuronal ensembles that represent previous waking activity and contribute to memory consolidation. We used extracellular recordings in the CA1 region of rats and systemic dosing of eszopiclone and zolpidem to test the hypothesis that these two drugs differentially affect hippocampal ripples and spike activity. We report evidence that eszopiclone makes ripples sparser, while zolpidem increases ripple density. In addition, eszopiclone led to a drastic decrease in spike firing, both in putative pyramidal cells and interneurons, while zolpidem did not substantially alter spiking. These results provide an explanation of the different effects of eszopiclone and zolpidem on memory in human studies and suggest that sleep medications can be used to regulate hippocampal ripple oscillations, which are causally linked to sleep-dependent memory consolidation.

Abstract

Background: colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most frequent tumors in terms of incidence and mortality. Several elements, both inherited and environmental, have been related with its pathogenesis. Aims: to analyze the influence of age, gender and nutritional factors on the diagnosis of colonic polyps and CRC. Methods: a prospective, descriptive study over outpatients from the Health Area of León who took a colonoscopy between 09/09/2012 and 06/30/2013. Patients were asked to fill a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire with data such a sociodemographic, toxic and dietetic facts. Differences in diagnosis according to sociodemographic and hygiene-dietetic data were analyzed with a multivariate analysis by forward stepwise logistic regression. Results: data were collected from 1390 patients. Mean age was 57.88 (15.17) years and 47.8 % were male. CRC was diagnosed in 5 % of colonoscopies, and polyps in 20.4 %, with 9.4 % of them being HRA. Risk of polyps and HRA was higher in males (26.9 % vs 14.5 %) and (12.6 % vs 6.3 %), respectively (p < 0.001). Mean age was significantly higher in patients who presented polyps (56.51 (15.45) vs 63.22 (12.69) years; p < 0.001). Among the group who reported intake of smoked and salted food, the risk of polyps doubled (2.9 % vs 6.7 %, p = 0.002). In relation to alcohol intake we found that subjects with daily alcohol consumption showed a higher incidence of polyps when compared to occasional drinkers and teetotallers (32 % vs 20 % vs 18.6 %, p = 0.002). Conclusions: age correlated with higher risk of polyps, HRA and CRC. Moreover, male gender also was associated with a high risk of polyps and HRA. Abstract

Introduction: The extraction of vegetable oils with organic solvents pollutes the environment and is expensive. Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) has provided important benefits in the production of oils, such as: higher revenues, decreased operation time and solvent consumption, which makes it friendly to the planet. Objective: Provide the conceptual foundations, applications and potentialities of ultrasoundassisted extraction in the performance, physical-chemical characteristics and bioactivity of oils obtained from plant sources. Materials and Methods: 71 original and review publications were studied, using techniques and methodologies related to the extraction and characterization of vegetable oils using EAU, solvents and pressing in different types of seeds corresponding to the period 2013-2022, considering the quality and nature of the publications. Results and Discussion: The reviewed articles showed that, with the UAE in vegetables, vegetable and essential oils, and phenolic compounds were obtained; from both the seeds (chia), the leaves (soursop) and the mesocarp (avocado pulp). The new contributions and methods optimized the extraction of the required compounds, with the need to apply them in the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical process industry. Conclusions: The review of the articles dealing with the production of vegetable oils using the EAU, established that this technique used organic solvents such as hexane, but its consumption is lower than traditional methods; decreased work times; the yields of the extracts were more efficient and the bioactive properties benefit the organism as antioxidants (canola) or anticarcinogenic (olive).
