Abstract

A two-sublattice ferrimagnet undergoes a transition from a collinear to canted magnetic phase at magnetic field oriented along an easy magnetization direction. In this work, we study the transition by means of the magneto-optical Faraday effect in a thin film of compensated iron garnet (Lu$_{3-{\rm{x}}}$Bi$_{\rm{x}}$)(Fe$_{5-{\rm{y}}-{\rm{z}}}$Ga$_{\rm{y}}$Al$_{\rm{z}}$)O$_{12}$ grown on Gd$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ substrate. In the immediate vicinity of the compensation temperature a precursor of the transition with a complex shape was observed. Using a special sample with variable thickness we demonstrate an interfacial origin of the precursor. Diffusion of gadolinium from the substrate into the film forms a thin intermixed layer with enhanced magnetization. It induces an extended inhomogeneous magnetic structure in the film. A two-step shape of the precursor appears due to an easy-plane anisotropy of the intermixed magnetic layer. Abstract

We report on magnetospectroscopy of HgTe quantum wells in magnetic fields up to 45 T in temperature range from 4.2 K up to 185 K. We observe intra- and inter-band transitions from zero-mode Landau levels, which split from the bottom conduction and upper valence subbands, and merge under the applied magnetic field. To describe experimental results, realistic temperature-dependent calculations of Landau levels have been performed. We show that although our samples are topological insulators at low temperatures only, the signature of such phase persists in optical transitions at high temperatures and high magnetic fields. Our results demonstrate that temperature-dependent magnetospectroscopy is a powerful tool to discriminate trivial and topological insulator phases in HgTe quantum wells.

Abstract

Experiments on the dynamic isentropic compression of solid CO2 samples by the megabar pressure induced by the superstrong magnetic field of an explosive magnetic generator have been performed with the X-ray diffraction detection of the state of the compressed samples. The generator operation is based on the fast compression of the initial magnetic flux in the cavity of the generator by a conducting cylindrical liner accelerated by the products of the explosion of a cylindrical explosive charge. Two points at pressures of 349 and 459 GPa on the compressibility diagram of CO2 have been determined in the experiments, where the degree of compression ρ/ρ0 of CO2 has reached currently highest values of 3.90 and 4.02, respectively. Comparison has shown that theoretically calculated equations of states for crystal phases of CO2 almost completely reproduce the experimental results, which confirms a high accuracy of theoretical predictions and the identity of the experimental and theoretical equations of states of CO2 modifications stable at high pressures. Abstract

The dependence of the magnetic susceptibility on the magnetic field is investigated for the single molecular magnet [Mn(hfac)$_2$NITPh]$_6$. The spikes of the susceptibility detected in a magnetic field ranging from 90 T to 285 T are interpreted as a manifestation of magnetic quantum jumps under spins reorientation from ferrimagnetic to ferromagnetic structure. The characteristic feature of the single molecular magnet Mn$_6$ R$_6$ is a deficiency of pair Heisenberg exchange interactions for the description of its magnetic properties in high magnetic fields. The comparison of the experimental data with the results of theoretical calculations allows us to prove the existence of strong three-spin interaction in this molecular cluster and to determine the values of exchange constants. 30. Synthesis of Tb2 O3 nanoparticles by laser ablation in Ar gas flow

Abstract

In this paper, we report on the synthesis of terbium sesquioxide (Tb2 O3 ) nanopowder by laser ablation of a solid target material in Ar gas flow using an ytterbium fiber laser with an average power of 300 W. The as-synthesized nanoparticles featured spherical morphology, an average size of 13 nm and a substantially monoclinic crystal structure, whose symmetry was converted into cubic by heat treatment at 850°C under vacuum. Pressureless densification of powder compact at 1450°C yields 95.6 % of the relative density indicating excellent sinterability of the produced nanoparticles. XPS analysis was used to estimate the ratio between O and Tb concentrations as [O] / [Tb] =1.51, which is close to the Tb2 O3 stoichiometry indicating a very low content of detrimental Tb4+ ions. The obtained results suggest that laser ablation in Ar gas flow is a promising technique for synthesizing Tb2 O3 nanoparticles suitable for further fabrication of advanced magnetooptical ceramics. © 2022, Institute for Metals Superplasticity Problems of Russian Academy of Sciences. Abstract

A dynamic deformation of sheet magnetic and nonmagnetic metal workpieces under a combination of a slowly varying primary magnetic field and a sequence of short magnetic field pulses with the opposite polarity is studied. This regime corresponds to backward electromagnetic forming. A fast motion of the workpiece induces an additional electromotive force in a discharge circuit and substantially alters a shape of the current pulse in an inductor. During the short opposite pulses, the Lorentz and magnetization components of the magnetic pressure on the magnetic workpiece demonstrate an unusual behavior, that is, the Lorentz pressure is attractive and the magnetization one is predominantly repulsive relative to the inductor.
