Abstract

The Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on the James Webb Space Telescope affords the astronomical community an unprecedented space-based Multi-Object Spectroscopy (MOS) capability through the use of a programmable array of micro-electro-mechanical shutters. Launched in December 2021 and commissioned along with a suite of other observatory instruments throughout the first half of 2022, NIRSpec has been carrying out scientific observations since the completion of commissioning. These observations would not be possible without a rigorous program of engineering operations to actively monitor and maintain NIRSpec's hardware health and safety and enhance instrument efficiency and performance. Although MOS is only one of the observing modes available to users, the complexity and uniqueness of the Micro-Shutter Assembly (MSA) that enables it has presented a variety of engineering challenges, including the appearance of electrical shorts that produce contaminating glow in exposures. Despite these challenges, the NIRSpec Multi-Object Spectrograph continues to perform robustly with no discernible degradation or significant reduction in capability. 2. Optimal Experimental Design for Universal Differential Equations

Abstract

Complex dynamic systems are typically either modeled using expert knowledge in the form of differential equations or via data-driven universal approximation models such as artificial neural networks (ANN). While the first approach has advantages with respect to interpretability, transparency, data-efficiency, and extrapolation, the second approach is able to learn completely unknown functional relations from data and may result in models that can be evaluated more efficiently. To combine the complementary advantages, universal differential equations (UDE) have been suggested. They replace unknown terms in the differential equations with ANN. Such hybrid models allow to both encode prior domain knowledge, such as first principles, and to learn unknown mechanisms from data. Often, data for the training of UDE can only be obtained via costly experiments. We consider optimal experimental design (OED) for planning of experiments and generating data needed to train UDE. The number of weights in the embedded ANN usually leads to an overfitting of the regression problem. To make the OED problem tractable for optimization, we propose and compare dimension reduction methods that are based on lumping of weights and singular value decomposition of the Fisher information matrix (FIM), respectively. They result in lower-dimensional variational differential equations, which are easier to solve and yield regular FIM. Our numerical results showcase the advantages of OED for UDE, such as increased data-efficiency and better extrapolation properties.

3. Less Is More: A Mixed-Methods Study on Security-Sensitive API Calls in Java for Better Dependency Selection

Abstract

Security sensitive APIs provide access to security-sensitive resources, e.g., the filesystem or network resources. Including such API calls -- directly or through dependencies -- increases the application's attack surface. An example of such a phenomenon is Log4Shell, which rendered many applications vulnerable due to network-related capabilities (JNDI lookup) in log4j package. Before the Log4Shell incident, alternate logging libraries to log4j were available that do not make JNDI lookup calls. The impact of such an incident would be minimal if information about network-related API calls by logging libraries were available to the developers. And so the lack of visibility into the calls to these security sensitive APIs by functionally similar open-source packages makes it difficult for developers to use them as a dependency selection criterion. The goal of this study is to aid developers in selecting their dependency by understanding security sensitive APIs in their dependency through call graph analysis. We conducted a mixed-methods study with 45 Java packages and defined a list of 219 security sensitive APIs. We then used call graph analysis to analyze the prevalence of these APIs in our selected package versions, with and without their dependencies. Finally, we conducted a survey with open-source developers (110 respondents) showing the comparison of functionally similar packages w.r.t. Security sensitive API calls to understand the usefulness of this API information in the dependency selection process. The number of Security sensitive API calls of functionally similar packages can vary from 0 to 368 in one API category and 0 to 429 in total. Our survey results show that 73% developers agree that information about the number and type of security-sensitive API calls of functionally similar packages would have been useful in their dependency selection.

4. Generative AI Usage and Academic Performance

Abstract

This study evaluates the impact of students' usage of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools such as ChatGPT on their academic performance. We analyze student essays using GenAI detection systems to identify GenAI users among the cohort. Employing multivariate regression analysis, we find that students using GenAI tools score on average 6.71 (out of 100) points lower than non-users. While GenAI tools may offer benefits for learning and engagement, the way students actually use it correlates with diminished academic outcomes. Exploring the underlying mechanism, additional analyses show that the effect is particularly detrimental to students with high learning potential, suggesting an effect whereby GenAI tool usage hinders learning. Our findings provide important empirical evidence for the ongoing debate on the integration of GenAI in higher education and underscores the necessity for educators, institutions, and policymakers to carefully consider its implications for student performance., Comment: This version: May 2024

11. Learning and generalizing associations between social cues and outcomes

Abstract

To succeed in social situations, we must learn how social cues predict subsequent events. How do we quickly form associations between a variety of social cues, such as individuals signaling their current emotion state, and social outcomes? To address this question, we developed a task in which participants viewed images of individuals conveying different emotions and searched among these images to gain rewards. Rewards were associated with either individuals' identities or emotion cues. Across four experiments (N=720), individuals learned about rewards more efficiently from individual identity cues versus a wide variety of emotion cues. Participants also generalized cue-outcome associations more easily for individuals versus emotions. Learning was worse if participants experienced a change in the association rule, especially when switching from learning individual-based associations to emotion-based associations. Overall, we show that social cue type influences how associations between cues and rewards are learned, with implications for understanding learning in social contexts.

12. Children's Knowledge and Feelings Align in Response to Emotional Music

Abstract

Examining emotion recognition and response to music can isolate recognition of and resonance with emotion from the confounding effects of other social cues (e.g., faces). In a within-sample design, participants aged 5-6 years in the eastern region of the United States (N = 135, M[subscript age] = 5.98, SD[subscript age] = 0.54; 78 female, 56 male; eight Asian, 43 Black, 62 White, 13 biracial, and nine "other") listened to clips of calm, scary, and sad music. In separate sessions, participants identified the emotional content of the music or reported on the feelings elicited by the music clip, with above-chance accuracy. Emotion "recognition" was associated with age and higher levels of child emotional verbal expressivity. Children with higher parent-reported empathy reported greater "resonance" with the emotion conveyed by music, specifically for sad music. Recognition and resonance were correlated (i.e., alignment), although the relationship varied as a function of the emotion expressed, with the greatest alignment for sad music. Results provide insights into emotion recognition and resonance in the absence of direct social signals and provide evidence that children's ability to recognize and resonate with emotion differs depending on characteristics of the music and the child.

Abstract

While artificial intelligence (AI) has made many successful applications in various domains, its adoption in healthcare lags a little bit behind other high-stakes settings. Several factors contribute to this slower uptake, including regulatory frameworks, patient privacy concerns, and data heterogeneity. However, one significant challenge that impedes the implementation of AI in healthcare, particularly in orthopedics, is the lack of explainability and interpretability around AI models. Addressing the challenge of explainable AI (XAI) in orthopedics requires developing AI models and algorithms that prioritize transparency and interpretability, allowing clinicians, surgeons, and patients to understand the contributing factors behind any AI-powered predictive or descriptive models. The current contribution outlines several key challenges and opportunities that manifest in XAI in orthopedic practice. Abstract

Automatic segmentation of knee bony anatomy is essential in orthopedics, and it has been around for several years in both pre-operative and post-operative settings. While deep learning algorithms have demonstrated exceptional performance in medical image analysis, the assessment of fairness and potential biases within these models remains limited. This study aims to revisit deep learning-powered knee-bony anatomy segmentation using plain radiographs to uncover visible gender and racial biases. The current contribution offers the potential to advance our understanding of biases, and it provides practical insights for researchers and practitioners in medical imaging. The proposed mitigation strategies mitigate gender and racial biases, ensuring fair and unbiased segmentation results. Abstract

Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. Abstract

Abstract Many cellular processes are governed by protein–protein interactions that require tight spatial and temporal regulation. Accordingly, it is necessary to understand the dynamics of these interactions to fully comprehend and elucidate cellular processes and pathological disease states. To map de novo protein–protein interactions with time resolution at an organelle-wide scale, we developed a quantitative mass spectrometry method, time-resolved interactome profiling (TRIP). We apply TRIP to elucidate aberrant protein interaction dynamics that lead to the protein misfolding disease congenital hypothyroidism. We deconvolute altered temporal interactions of the thyroid hormone precursor thyroglobulin with pathways implicated in hypothyroidism pathophysiology, such as Hsp70-/90-assisted folding, disulfide/redox processing, and N-glycosylation. Functional siRNA screening identified VCP and TEX264 as key protein degradation components whose inhibition selectively rescues mutant prohormone secretion. Ultimately, our results provide novel insight into the temporal coordination of protein homeostasis, and our TRIP method should find broad applications in investigating protein-folding diseases and cellular processes.

26. Polyethylene liner dissociation in total hip arthroplasty: a retrospective case–control study on a single implant design

Abstract

Abstract Background Modular acetabular components for total hip arthroplasty (THA) provide intraoperative flexibility; however, polyethylene liner dissociation may occur. This study aimed to examine the incidence and causes of liner dissociation associated with a specific acetabular component design at a single centre. Materials and methods A retrospective analysis of 7027 patients who underwent primary THA was performed to identify isolated liner dislocations. Patient demographics, clinical presentations, surgical and implant details, and both radiographic and computed tomography (CT) findings were analysed. Patients with liner dislocation were matched to a control group via 2:1 propensity score matching, and a logistic regression analysis was employed to identify associated risk factors. Results A total of 32 patients (0.45%) experienced liner dislocation at a mean 71.47 ± 60.10 months post surgery. Significant factors contributing to dislocations included the use of a conventional compared with a highly crosslinked polyethylene component (p = 0.049) and screw fixation (p = 0.028). Radiographic and CT analysis highlighted the importance of proper component orientation, revealing that patients experiencing dislocations demonstrated significantly lower acetabular cup anteversion angles (p = 0.001) compared with the control group. Impingement and malposition, identified in 41% and 47% of the cases, respectively, further underscored the multifactorial nature of dislocation risks. Conclusions While the overall rate of polyethylene liner dislocation was low, the findings of this study highlight the importance of appropriate cup placement to decrease the risk of dissociation. It further substantiates the influence of impingement and malposition in liner displacement, with increased mechanical stress exerted on the locking mechanism under adverse conditions and the potential risk increase due to screw placement.

Abstract

Abstract AI-powered segmentation of hip and knee bony anatomy has revolutionized orthopedics, transforming pre-operative planning and post-operative assessment. Despite the remarkable advancements in AI algorithms for medical imaging, the potential for biases inherent within these models remains largely unexplored. This study tackles these concerns by thoroughly re-examining AI-driven segmentation for hip and knee bony anatomy. While advanced imaging modalities like CT and MRI offer comprehensive views, plain radiographs (X-rays) predominate the standard initial clinical assessment due to their widespread availability, low cost, and rapid acquisition. Hence, we focused on plain radiographs to ensure the utilization of our contribution in diverse healthcare settings, including those with limited access to advanced imaging technologies. This work provides insights into the underlying causes of biases in AI-based knee and hip image segmentation through an extensive evaluation, presenting targeted mitigation strategies to alleviate biases related to sex, race, and age, using an automatic segmentation that is fair, impartial, and safe in the context of AI. Our contribution can enhance inclusivity, ethical practices, equity, and an unbiased healthcare environment with advanced clinical outcomes, aiding decision-making and osteoarthritis research. Furthermore, we have made all the codes and datasets publicly and freely accessible to promote open scientific research.

Abstract

The Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) is one of the four focal plane instruments on the James Webb Space Telescope. In this paper, we summarize the in-orbit performance of NIRSpec, as derived from data collected during its commissioning campaign and the first few months of nominal science operations. More specifically, we discuss the performance of some critical hardware components such as the two NIRSpec Hawaii-2RG (H2RG) detectors, wheel mechanisms, and the micro-shutter array. We also summarize the accuracy of the two target acquisition procedures used to accurately place science targets into the slit apertures, discuss the current status of the spectro-photometric and wavelength calibration of NIRSpec spectra, and provide the as measured sensitivity in all NIRSpec science modes. Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent chronic joint disease worldwide, where knee OA takes more than 80% of commonly affected joints. Knee OA is not a curable disease yet, and it affects large columns of patients, making it costly to patients and healthcare systems. Etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of knee OA might be argued by variability in its clinical and physical manifestations. Although knee OA carries a list of well-known terminology aiming to standardize the nomenclature of the diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and clinical outcomes of the chronic joint disease, in practice there is a wide range of terminology associated with knee OA across different data sources, including but not limited to biomedical literature, clinical notes, healthcare literacy, and health-related social media. Among these data sources, the scientific articles published in the biomedical literature usually make a principled pipeline to study disease. Rapid yet, accurate text mining on large-scale scientific literature may discover novel knowledge and terminology to better understand knee OA and to improve the quality of knee OA diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. The present works aim to utilize artificial neural network strategies to automatically extract vocabularies associated with knee OA diseases. Abstract

Effective communication is vital for patient safety, yet failures are common, often due to outdated methods. This study aimed to assess whether in-ear communication devices improve communication in orthopedic surgery simulations compared to traditional loud voice methods. Fifteen participants underwent simulations using both in-ear wireless devices and standard communication. Results showed significant improvements with in-ear devices in correctly identifying phrases (78.6% vs 44%), effectiveness (7.9/10 vs 4.9/10), and clarity (8/10 vs 4/10), all P < .001. Participants also favored in-ear devices in usability assessments. Sound levels recorded were comparable between groups. In conclusion, in-ear communication is safe and effective in orthopedic settings, potentially enhancing efficiency and safety. These devices can mitigate loud noises, benefiting surgeon well-being and patient outcomes.

Abstract

Open-source software supply chain attacks aim at infecting downstream users by poisoning open-source packages. The common way of consuming such artifacts is through package repositories and the development of vetting strategies to detect such attacks is ongoing research. Despite its popularity, the Java ecosystem is the less explored one in the context of supply chain attacks. In this paper we present indicators of malicious behavior that can be observed statically through the analysis of Java bytecode. Then we evaluate how such indicators and their combinations perform when detecting malicious code injections. We do so by injecting three malicious payloads taken from real-world examples into the Top-10 most popular Java libraries from libraries.io. We found that the analysis of strings in the constant pool and of sensitive APIs in the bytecode instructions aid in the task of detecting malicious Java packages by significantly reducing the information, thus, making also manual triage possible.

Unfortunately, there exists a paucity of cardiac surgery outcomes data in modern patients who are HIV+. Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of PearlDiver, an all-payer claims administrative database. In total, 14,714,743 patients were captured between 2010 and 2020. Of these, 59,695 (0.4%) of patients had a history of HIV+, and 1759 (2.95%) of these patients underwent cardiac surgery. Patients who were HIV+ were younger, more often male, and had greater comorbidity, history of hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic liver disease, chronic kidney disease, chronic lung disease, and heart failure. Abstract

The Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) is one the four focal plane instruments on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) which was launched on December 25, 2021. We present the in-flight status and performance of NIRSpec's detector system as derived from the instrument commissioning data. The instrument features two 2048 x 2048 HAWAII-2RG sensor chip assemblies (SCAs) that are operated at a temperature of about 42.8 K and are read out via a pair of SIDECAR ASICs. NIRSpec supports "Improved Reference Sampling and Subtraction" (IRS2) readout mode that was designed to meet NIRSpec's stringent noise requirements and to reduce 1/f and correlated noise. In addition, NIRSpec features subarrays optimized for bright object time series observations, e.g. for the observation of exoplanet transit around bright host stars. The NIRSpec instrument for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a highly versatile near-infrared spectrograph that can be operated in various observing modes, slit apertures, and spectral resolutions. Obtaining dedicated calibration data for all possible combinations of aperture and disperser is an intractable task. We have therefore developed a procedure to derive a highly realistic model of the instrument's optical geometry across the entire field of view, using calibration data acquired through only a subset of NIRSpec apertures, which nevertheless allows the light paths within the spectrograph to be accurately computed for all apertures and all observing modes. This parametric instrument model thus provides the basis for the extraction of wavelength-calibrated spectra from any NIRSpec exposure, regardless of observing mode or aperture used. Optimizing the NIRSpec instrument model and deriving its final wavelength and astrometric calibration was one of the most crucial elements of the NIRSpec commissioning phase. Abstract

The Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on board of the James Webb Space Telescope will be the first multi-object spectrograph in space offering ~250,000 configurable micro-shutters, apart from being equipped with an integral field unit and fixed slits. At its heart, the NIRSpec grating wheel assembly is a cryogenic mechanism equipped with six dispersion gratings, a prism, and a mirror. The finite angular positioning repeatability of the wheel causes small but measurable displacements of the light beam on the focal plane, precluding a static solution to predict the light-path. To address that, two magneto-resistive position sensors are used to measure the tip and tilt displacement of the selected GWA element each time the wheel is rotated. The calibration of these sensors is a crucial component of the model-based approach used for NIRSpec for calibration, spectral extraction, and target placement in the micro-shutters. Abstract

To achieve its ambitious scientific goals, the Near-Infrared Spectrograph, NIRSpec, on board the Webb Space Telescope, needs to meet very demanding throughput requirements, here quantified in terms of photon-conversion efficiency (PCE). During the calibration activities performed for the instrument commissioning, we have obtained the first in-flight measurements of its PCE and also updated the modeling of the light losses occurring in the NIRSpec slit devices. The measured PCE of NIRSpec fixed-slit and multi-object spectroscopy modes overall meets or exceeds the pre-launch model predictions. The results are more contrasted for the integral-field spectroscopy mode, where the differences with the model can reach -20%, above 4 micron, and exceed +30%, below 2 micron. Additionally, thanks to the high quality of the JWST point-spread function, our slit-losses, at the shorter wavelength, are significantly decreased with respect to the pre-flight modeling. Abstract

The NIRSpec instrument on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) brings the first multi-object spectrograph (MOS) into space, enabled by a programmable Micro Shutter Array (MSA) of ~250,000 individual apertures. During the 6-month Commissioning period, the MSA performed admirably, completing ~800 reconfigurations with an average success rate of ~96% for commanding shutters open in science-like patterns. We show that 82.5% of the unvignetted shutter population is usable for science, with electrical short masking now the primary cause of inoperable apertures. In response, we propose a plan to recheck existing shorts during nominal operations, which is expected to reduce the number of affected shutters. We also present a full assessment of the Failed Open and Failed Closed shutter populations, which both show a marginal increase in line with predictions from ground testing. We suggest an amendment to the Failed Closed shutter flagging scheme to improve flexibility for MSA configuration planning. Abstract

This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period. We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments, and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases, JWST will go deeper faster than expected. Abstract

We describe a previously unappreciated role for Bruton's tyrosine kinase (BTK) in fungal immune surveillance against aspergillosis, an unforeseen complication of BTK inhibitors (BTKi) used for treating B cell lymphoid malignancies. We studied BTK-dependent fungal responses in neutrophils from diverse populations, including healthy donors, patients who were treated with BTKi, and X-linked agammaglobulinemia patients. Upon fungal exposure, BTK was activated in human neutrophils in a TLR2-, Dectin-1-, and Fc[gamma]R-dependent manner, triggering the oxidative burst. BTK inhibition selectively impeded neutrophil-mediated damage to Aspergillus hyphae, primary granule release, and the fungus-induced oxidative burst by abrogating NADPH oxidase subunit [p40.sup.phox] and GTPase RAC2 activation. Moreover, neutrophil-specific Btk deletion in mice enhanced aspergillosis susceptibility by impairing neutrophil function, not recruitment or lifespan. Conversely, GM-CSF partially mitigated these deficits by enhancing [p47.sup.phox] activation.
