Search

JWST has recently discovered a subset of reionization era galaxies with ionized gas that is metal poor in oxygen and carbon but heavily-enriched in nitrogen. This abundance pattern is almost never seen in lower redshift galaxies but is commonly observed in globular cluster stars. We have recently demonstrated that this peculiar abundance pattern appears in a compact ($\simeq 20$ pc) metal-poor galaxy undergoing a strong burst of star formation. This galaxy was originally selected based on strong CIV emission, indicating a hard radiation field rarely seen locally. In this paper, we present JWST/NIRSpec observations of another reionization-era galaxy known to power strong CIV emission, the $z=7.04$ gravitationally-lensed galaxy A1703-zd6. The emission line spectrum reveals this is a metal poor galaxy ($12+\log(\rm O/H) = 7.47\pm0.19$) dominated by a young stellar population ($1.6^{+0.5}_{-0.4}$ Myr) that powers a very hard ionizing spectrum (CIV EW = 19.4 $\unicode{x212B}$, He II EW = 2.2 $\unicode{x212B}$). The ISM is highly-enriched in nitrogen ($\log(\rm N/O)=-0.6$) with very high electron densities ($8-19\times10^4$ cm$^{-3}$) and extreme ionization conditions rarely seen at lower redshift. We also find intense CIV emission (EW$\gtrsim20$ $\unicode{x212B}$) in two new $z\gtrsim 6$ metal poor galaxies. To put these results in context, we search for UV line emission in a sample of 737 $z\gtrsim 4$ galaxies with NIRSpec spectra, establishing that 40(30)% of systems with [OIII]+H$\beta$ EW $>2000\unicode{x212B}$ have NIV] (CIV) detections with EW$>5$ $\unicode{x212B}$ ($>10$ $\unicode{x212B}$). These results suggest high N/O ratios and hard ionizing sources appear in a brief phase following a burst of star formation in compact high density stellar complexes., Comment: 29 pages, 18 figures; submitted to ApJ

JWST observations have recently begun delivering the first samples of Ly$\alpha$ velocity profile measurements at $z>6$, opening a new window on the reionization process. Interpretation of $z\gtrsim6$ line profiles is currently stunted by limitations in our knowledge of the intrinsic Ly$\alpha$ profile (before encountering the IGM) of the galaxies that are common at $z\gtrsim6$. To overcome this shortcoming, we have obtained resolved ($R\sim3900$) Ly$\alpha$ spectroscopy of $42$ galaxies at $z=2.1-3.4$ with similar properties as are seen at $z>6$. We quantify a variety of Ly$\alpha$ profile statistics as a function of [OIII]+H$\beta$ EW. Our spectra reveal a new population of $z\simeq 2-3$ galaxies with large [OIII]+H$\beta$ EWs ($>1200\ \r{A}$) and a large fraction of Ly$\alpha$ flux emerging near the systemic redshift (peak velocity $\simeq0$ km s$^{-1}$). These spectra indicate that low density neutral hydrogen channels are able to form in a subset of low mass galaxies ($\lesssim1\times10^8\ M_{\odot}$) that experience a burst of star formation (sSFR $>100$ Gyr$^{-1}$). Other extreme [OIII] emitters show weaker Ly$\alpha$ that is shifted to higher velocities ($\simeq240$ km s$^{-1}$) with little emission near line center. We investigate the impact the IGM is likely to have on these intrinsic line profiles in the reionization era, finding that the centrally peaked Ly$\alpha$ emitters should be strongly attenuated at $z\gtrsim5$. We show that these line profiles are particularly sensitive to the impact of resonant scattering from infalling IGM and can be strongly attenuated even when the IGM is highly ionized at $z\simeq 5$. In anticipation of the Euclid Wide and Deep Surveys, we present optical emission-line predictions at intermediate redshifts from 0.4 to 2.5. Our approach combines a mock light cone from the GAEA semi-analytic model to self-consistently model nebular emission from HII regions, narrow-line regions of active galactic nuclei (AGN), and evolved stellar populations. Our analysis focuses on seven optical emission lines: H$\alpha$, H$\beta$, [SII]$\lambda\lambda 6717, 6731$, [NII]$\lambda 6584$, [OI]$\lambda 6300$, [OIII]$\lambda 5007$, and [OII]$\lambda\lambda 3727, 3729$. We find that Euclid will predominantly observe massive, star-forming, and metal-rich line-emitters. Interstellar dust, modelled using a Calzetti law with mass-dependent scaling, may decrease observable percentages by a further 20-30% with respect to our underlying emission-line populations from GAEA. We predict Euclid to observe around 30-70% of H$\alpha$-, [NII]-, [SII]-, and [OIII]-emitting galaxies at redshift below 1 and under 10% at higher redshift. Observability of H$\beta$-, [OII]-, and [OI]- emission is limited to below 5%. For the Euclid-observable sample, we find that BPT diagrams can effectively distinguish between different galaxy types up to around redshift 1.8, attributed to the bias toward metal-rich systems. Moreover, we show that the relationships of H$\alpha$ and [OIII]+H$\beta$ to the star-formation rate, and the [OIII]-AGN luminosity relation, exhibit minimal changes with increasing redshift. Based on line ratios [NII]/H$\alpha$, [NII]/[OII], and [NII]/[SII], we further propose novel z-invariant tracers for the black hole accretion rate-to-star formation rate ratio. Lastly, we find that commonly used metallicity estimators display gradual shifts in normalisations with increasing redshift, while maintaining the overall shape of local calibrations. Nearly a decade ago, we began to see indications that reionization-era galaxies power hard radiation fields rarely seen at lower redshift. Most striking were detections of nebular CIV emission in what appeared to be typical low mass galaxies, requiring an ample supply of 48 eV photons to triply ionize carbon. The nature of this population has long remained unclear owing to limitations of ground-based spectroscopy. We have obtained deep JWST/NIRSpec R=1000 spectroscopy of the two z>6 CIV-emitting galaxies known prior to JWST. Here we present a rest-UV to optical spectrum of one of these two systems, the multiply-imaged z=6.1 lensed galaxy RXCJ2248-ID. NIRCam imaging reveals two compact (<22pc) clumps separated by 220pc, with one comprising a dense concentration of massive stars ($>10,400M_{\odot}$/yr/kpc$^2$) formed in a recent burst. We stack spectra of 3 images of the galaxy (J=24.8-25.9), yielding a very deep spectrum providing a high S/N template of strong emission line sources at z>6. The spectrum reveals narrow high ionization lines (HeII, CIV, NIV]) with line ratios consistent with powering by massive stars. The rest-optical spectrum is dominated by very strong emission lines ([OIII] EW=2800\AA), albeit with weak emission from low-ionization transitions ([OIII]/[OII]=184). The electron density is found to be very high($6.4-31\times10^4$cm$^{-3}$) based on three UV transitions. The ionized gas is metal poor ($12+\log(\rm O/H)=7.43^{+0.17}_{-0.09}$), yet highly enriched in nitrogen ($\log(\rm N/O)=-0.39^{+0.11}_{-0.10}$). The spectrum appears broadly similar to that of GNz11 at z=10.6, without showing the same AGN signatures. We suggest that the hard radiation field and rapid nitrogen enrichment may be a short-lived phase that many z>6 galaxies go through as they undergo strong bursts of star formation. We consider the correlator $\langle \mathcal{L} \mathcal{K} \tilde{ \mathcal{K}} \rangle $ of the Lagrange operator of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory and two conjugate two-excitation operators in an $su(2)$ sector. In a recent letter we presented the equations which describe tensionless limit of the excited-state spectrum for strings on $AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4$ supported by Ramond-Ramond flux, and their numerical solution. In this paper, we give a detailed account of the derivation of these equations from the mirror TBA equations proposed by Frolov and Sfondrini, discussing the contour-deformation trick which we used to obtain excited-state equations and the tensionless limit. Early JWST observations have uncovered a new population of red sources that might represent a previously overlooked phase of supermassive black hole growth (Kocevski et al. 2023; Matthee et al. 2023, Labb\'e et al. 2023). One of the most intriguing examples is an extremely red, point-like object that was found to be triply-imaged by the strong lensing (SL) cluster Abell 2744 (Furtak et al. 2023). Here we present deep JWST/NIRSpec observations of this object, Abell2744-QSO1. The spectroscopy confirms that the three images are of the same object, and that it is a highly reddened ($A_V\simeq3$) broad emission-line Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) at a redshift of $z_{\mathrm{spec}}=7.0451\pm0.0005$. From the width of H$\beta$ ($\mathrm{FWHM}=2800\pm250\,\frac{\mathrm{km}}{\mathrm{s}}$) we derive a black hole mass of $M_{\mathrm{BH}}=4_{-1}^{+2}\times10^7\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$. We infer a very high ratio of black hole to galaxy mass of at least 3%, an order of magnitude more than is seen in local galaxies (Bennert et al. 2011), and possibly as high as 100%. The lack of strong metal lines in the spectrum together with the high bolometric luminosity ($L_{\mathrm{bol}}=(1.1\pm0.3)\times10^{45}\,\frac{\mathrm{erg}}{\mathrm{s}}$) indicate that we are seeing the black hole in a phase of rapid growth, accreting at 30% of the Eddington limit. The rapid growth and high black hole to galaxy mass ratio of A2744-QSO1 suggest that it may represent the missing link between black hole seeds (Volonteri et al. 2021) and the first luminous quasars (Fan et al. 2022)., Comment: Published in Nature. In the current JWST era, rest-frame UV spectra play a crucial role in enhancing our understanding of the interstellar medium (ISM) and stellar properties of the first galaxies in the epoch of reionization (EoR, $z>6$). Here, we compare well-known and reliable optical diagrams sensitive to the main ionization source (i.e., star formation, SF; active galactic nuclei, AGN; shocks) to UV counterparts proposed in the literature - the so-called ``UV-BPT diagrams'' - using the HST COS Legacy Archive Spectroscopic SurveY (CLASSY), the largest high-quality, high-resolution and broad-wavelength range atlas of far-UV spectra for 45 local star-forming galaxies. In particular, we explore where CLASSY UV line ratios are located in the different UV diagnostic plots, taking into account state-of-the-art photoionization and shock models and, for the first time, the measured ISM and stellar properties (e.g., gas-phase metallicity, ionization parameter, carbon abundance, stellar age). We find that the combination of C III] $\lambda\lambda$1907,9 He II $\lambda1640$ and O III] $\lambda$1666 can be a powerful tool to separate between SF, shocks and AGN at sub-solar metallicities. We also confirm that alternative diagrams without O III] $\lambda$1666 still allow us to define a SF-locus with some caveats. Diagrams including C IV $\lambda\lambda$1548,51 should be taken with caution given the complexity of this doublet profile. Finally, we present a discussion detailing the ISM conditions required to detect UV emission lines, visible only in low gas-phase metallicity (12+log(O/H) $\lesssim8.3$) and high ionization parameter (log($U$) $\gtrsim-2.5$) environments. The first JWST spectroscopy of the luminous galaxy GN-z11 simultaneously both established its redshift at $z=10.6$ and revealed a rest-ultraviolet spectrum dominated by signatures of highly-ionized nitrogen, which has so far defied clear interpretation. Here we present a reappraisal of this spectrum in the context of both detailed nebular modeling and nearby metal-poor reference galaxies. The N IV] emission enables the first nebular density measurement in a star-forming galaxy at $z>10$, and reveals evidence for extremely high densities $n_e\gtrsim 10^5$ $\mathrm{cm^{-3}}$. We definitively establish with a suite of photoionization models that regardless of ionization mechanism and accounting for depletion and this density enhancement, an ISM substantially enriched in nitrogen ($[\mathrm{N/O}]=+0.52$) is required to reproduce the observed lines. A search of local UV databases confirms that nearby metal-poor galaxies power N IV] emission, but that this emission is uniformly associated with lower densities than implied in GN-z11. We compare to a unique nearby galaxy, Mrk~996, where a high concentration of Wolf-Rayet stars and their CNO-processed wind ejecta produce a UV spectrum remarkably similar to that of both GN-z11 and the Lyc-leaking super star cluster in the Sunburst Arc. Collating this evidence in the context of Galactic stellar abundances, we suggest that the peculiar nitrogenic features prominent in GN-z11 may be a unique signature of intense and densely clustered star formation in the evolutionary chain of the present-day globular clusters, consistent with in-situ early enrichment with nuclear-processed stellar ejecta on a massive scale. Despite impressive advances in the AdS3/CFT2 correspondence, the setup involving Ramond-Ramond backgrounds, which is related to the D1-D5 system of branes, remained relatively poorly understood. We use the Mirror TBA equations recently constructed by Frolov and Sfondrini to study the spectrum of pure Ramond-Ramond $AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4$ strings. We find that the leading-order contribution to the anomalous dimensions at small tension is due to the gapless worldsheet excitations, i.e. to the $T^4$ bosons and their superpartners, whose interactions are nontrivial., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We report the discovery of a triply imaged active galactic nucleus (AGN), lensed by the galaxy cluster MACS J0035.4-2015 ($z_{\mathrm{d}}=0.352$). The object is detected in Hubble Space Telescope imaging taken for the RELICS program. It appears to have a quasi-stellar nucleus consistent with a point-source, with a de-magnified radius of $r_e\lesssim100$ pc. The object is spectroscopically confirmed to be an AGN at $z_{\mathrm{spec}}=2.063\pm0.005$ showing broad rest-frame UV emission lines, and is detected in both X-ray observations with Chandra and in ALCS ALMA band 6 (1.2 mm) imaging. It has a relatively faint rest-frame UV luminosity for a quasar-like object, $M_{\mathrm{UV},1450}=-19.7\pm0.2$. The object adds to just a few quasars or other X-ray sources known to be multiply lensed by a galaxy cluster. Some diffuse emission from the host galaxy is faintly seen around the nucleus and there is a faint object nearby sharing the same multiple-imaging symmetry and geometric redshift, possibly an interacting galaxy or a star-forming knot in the host. We present an accompanying lens model, calculate the magnifications and time delays, and infer physical properties for the source. We find the rest-frame UV continuum and emission lines to be dominated by the AGN, and the optical emission to be dominated by the host galaxy of modest stellar mass $M_{\star}\simeq10^{9.2} \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$. We also observe some variation in the AGN emission with time, which may suggest that the AGN used to be more active. This object adds a low-redshift counterpart to several relatively faint AGN recently uncovered at high redshifts with HST and JWST., Comment: Published in MNRAS. It is argued that the integrable model for the planar spectrum of the AdS/CFT correspondence can accommodate for the full spectrum of excitations $D^{\alpha \dot \alpha}, \phi^{[IJ]}, \psi^I, \bar \psi_I, F^{\alpha \beta}, \tilde F^{\dot \alpha \dot \beta}$ (with $I,J \in 1 \ldots 4$) if double excitations are allowed for all three raising operators of the internal $SU(4)$ symmetry. We present a tree-level analysis of related creation amplitudes in the nested Bethe ansatz as well as in the original level-1 picture in which excitations of various flavours scatter by a true $S$-matrix. In the latter case, the creation amplitudes for all double excitations we encounter take a perfectly universal form. Building on these ideas we work out Bethe solutions and states relevant in the mixing problem concerning the on-shell Lagrangian of ${\cal N} = 4$ super Yang-Mills theory. Owing to the very existence of double excitations, the chiral Yang-Mills field strength tensor can be represented by the four fermions $\{\psi^{31}, \psi^{32}, \psi^{41}, \psi^{42}\}$ moving on a spin chain of length two. Our analysis remains restricted to leading order in the coupling, where the conformal eigenstate corresponding to the on-shell Lagrangian only comprises the pure Yang-Mills action. It should eventually be possible to augment our analysis to higher loop orders by incorporating coupling corrections in the relevant ingredients from the Bethe ansatz. Finally, it was recently realised how structure constants for operators containing the hitherto hidden half of the excitations can be computed by the hexagon formalism. We use this for a first test of our conjecture for the on-shell Lagrangian, namely that its three-point function with two half-BPS operators of equal length ought to vanish., Comment: LaTeX, 18 pp, 3 figures

We describe new JWST/NIRSpec observations of galaxies at $z\gtrsim7$ taken from the CEERS survey. Previous observations of this area have revealed associations of Ly$\alpha$ emitters at redshifts ($z=7.5$, $7.7$, $8.7$) where the intergalactic medium (IGM) is thought to be mostly neutral, leading to suggestions that these systems are situated in large ionized bubbles. We identify 21 $z\gtrsim7$ galaxies with robust redshifts in the CEERS dataset, including 10 in the Ly$\alpha$ associations. Their spectra are indicative of very highly ionized and metal poor gas, with line ratios (O32 $=17.84$ and Ne3O2 $=0.89$, linear scale) and metallicity ($12+\log{(\rm{O/H})}=7.84$) that are rarely seen at lower redshifts. We find that the most extreme spectral properties are found in the six $z\gtrsim7$ Ly$\alpha$ emitters in the sample. Each has a hard ionizing spectrum indicating that their visibility is likely enhanced by efficient ionizing photon production. Ly$\alpha$ velocity offsets are found to be very large ($\gtrsim300$ km s$^{-1}$), likely also contributing to their detectability. We find that Ly$\alpha$ in $z\gtrsim7$ galaxies is $6-12\times$ weaker than in lower redshift samples with matched rest-optical spectral properties. If the bubbles around the Ly$\alpha$ emitters are relatively small ($\lesssim0.5-1$ pMpc), we may expect such significant attenuation of Ly$\alpha$ in these ionized regions. We discuss several other effects that may contribute to weaker Ly$\alpha$ emission at $z\gtrsim7$. We here report the detection of the nebular HeII4686 line in 32 HII regions in the metal-poor collisional ring galaxy Cartwheel using the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) dataset. The measured I(HeII4686)/I(Hbeta) ratio varies from 0.004 to 0.07, with a mean value of 0.010+/-0.003. Ten of these 32 HII regions are coincident with the location of an Ultra Luminous X-ray (ULX) source. We used the flux ratios of important diagnostic lines and results of photoionization by Simple Stellar Populations (SSPs) to investigate the likely physical mechanisms responsible for the ionization of He+. We find that the majority of the regions (27) are consistent with photoionization by star clusters in their Wolf-Rayet (WR) phase with initial ionization parameter -3.5

Line ratio diagnostics provide valuable clues on the source of ionizing radiation in galaxies with intense black hole accretion and starbursting events, such as local Seyfert or galaxies at the peak of the star formation history. We aim to provide a reference joint optical and mid-IR analysis for studying AGN identification via line ratios and testing predictions from photoionization models. We obtained homogenous optical spectra with the Southern Africa Large Telescope for 42 Seyfert galaxies with Spitzer/IRS spectroscopy and X-ray to mid-IR multiband data available. After confirming the power of the main optical ([OIII]) and mid-IR ([NeV], [OIV], [NeIII]) emission lines in tracing AGN activity, we explore diagrams based on ratios of optical and mid-IR lines by exploiting photoionization models of different ionizing sources (AGN, star formation and shocks). We find that pure AGN photoionization models are good at reproducing observations of Seyfert galaxies with an AGN fractional contribution to the mid-IR (5-40 micron) emission larger than 50 per cent. For targets with a lower AGN contribution these same models do not fully reproduce the observed mid-IR line ratios. Mid-IR ratios like [NeV]/[NeII], [OIV]/[NeII] and [NeIII]/[NeII] show a dependence on the AGN fractional contribution to the mid-IR unlike optical line ratios. An additional source of ionization, either from star formation or radiative shocks, can help explain the observations in the mid-IR. Among combinations of optical and mid-IR diagnostics in line ratio diagrams, only those involving the [OI]/Halpha ratio are promising diagnostics for simultaneously unraveling the relative role of AGN, star formation and, shocks. A proper identification of the dominant ionizing source would require the exploitation of analysis tools based on advanced statistical techniques as well as spatially resolved data., Comment: 31 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. Recent JWST/NIRCam imaging taken for the ultra-deep UNCOVER program reveals a very red dropout object at $z_{\mathrm{phot}}\simeq7.6$, triply imaged by the galaxy cluster Abell 2744 ($z_{\mathrm{d}}=0.308$). All three images are very compact, i.e. unresolved, with a de-lensed size upper-limit of $r_{e}\lesssim35$ pc. The images have apparent magnitudes of $m_{\mathrm{F444W}}\sim25-26$ AB, and the magnification-corrected absolute UV magnitude of the source is $M_{\mathrm{UV},1450}=-16.81\pm0.09$. From the sum of observed fluxes and from a spectral energy distribution (SED) analysis, we obtain estimates of the bolometric luminosities of the source of $L_{\mathrm{bol}}\gtrsim10^{43} \frac{\mathrm{erg}}{\mathrm{s}}$ and $L_{\mathrm{bol}}\sim10^{44}-10^{46} \frac{\mathrm{erg}}{\mathrm{s}}$, respectively. Based on its compact, point-like appearance, its position in color-color space and the SED analysis, we tentatively conclude that this object is a UV-faint dust-obscured quasar-like object, i.e. an active galactic nucleus (AGN) at high redshift. We also discuss other alternative origins for the object's emission features, including a massive star cluster, Population III, supermassive, or dark stars, or a direct-collapse black hole. Although populations of red galaxies at similar photometric redshifts have been detected with JWST, this object is unique in that its high-redshift nature is corroborated geometrically by lensing, that it is unresolved despite being magnified -- and thus intrinsically even more compact -- and that it occupies notably distinct regions in both size-luminosity and color-color space. Planned UNCOVER JWST/NIRSpec observations, scheduled in Cycle 1, will enable a more detailed analysis of this object., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. The hexagon approach provides an integrability framework for the computation of structure constants in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang--Mills theory in four dimensions. Three-point functions are cut into two hexagonal patches, on which the excitations of the long-range Bethe ansatz of the spectrum problem scatter. To this end, the Bethe states representing the operators also need to be cut into two parts. In rank-one sectors such entangled states are fairly straightforward to construct so that most applications of the method have so far been restricted to this simplest case. In this article we construct entangled states for operators in $psu(1,1|2)$ sectors, importing a minimum of information from the nested Bethe ansatz. The idea is successfully tested against free field theory for a sample set of correlators with up to three higher-rank operators. Further, we take a look at the same correlators in the presence of marginal deformations of the theory. While a systematic modification of the hexagon procedure remains out of reach for now, in practical applications the undeformed amplitudes are surprisingly efficient, especially for a certain one-parameter deformation., Comment: 43 pages, 1 figure

We compute synthetic, rest-frame optical and ultraviolet (UV) emission-line properties of galaxy populations at redshifts from z$\approx$0 to z=8 in a full cosmological framework. We achieve this by coupling, in post-processing, the cosmological IllustrisTNG simulations with new-generation nebular-emission models, accounting for line emission from young stars, post-asymptotic-giant-branch (PAGB) stars, accreting black holes (BHs) and, for the first time, fast radiative shocks. The optical emission-line properties of simulated galaxies dominated by different ionizing sources are largely consistent with those expected from classical diagnostic diagrams and reflect the observed increase in [OIII]/H$\beta$ at fixed [NII]/H$\alpha$ and the evolution of the H$\alpha$, [OIII]$\lambda5007$ and [OII]$\lambda3727$ luminosity functions from z$\approx$0 to z$\sim$2. At higher redshift, we find that the emission-line galaxy population is dominated by star-forming and active galaxies, with negligible fractions of shock- and PAGB-dominated galaxies. We highlight 10 UV-diagnostic diagrams able to robustly identify the dominant ionizing sources in high-redshift galaxies. We also compute the evolution of several optical- and UV-line luminosity functions from z=4 to z=7, and the number of galaxies expected to be detectable per field of view in deep, medium-resolution spectroscopic observations with the NIRSpec instrument on board the James Webb Space Telescope. We find that 2-hour-long exposures are sufficient to achieve unbiased censuses of H$\alpha$ and [OIII]$\lambda5007$ emitters, while at least 5 hours are required for H$\beta$, and even 10 hours will detect only progressively smaller fractions of [OII]$\lambda3727$, OIII]$\lambda1663$, CIII]$\lambda1908$, CIV$\lambda1550$, [NII]$\lambda6584$, SiIII]$\lambda1888$ and HeII$\lambda1640$ emitters, especially in the presence of dust., Comment: 28 pages, 15 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We present the addition of nebular emission from the narrow-line regions (NLR) surrounding active galactic nuclei (AGN) to BEAGLE (BayEsian Analysis of GaLaxy sEds). Using a set of idealised spectra, we fit to a set of observables (emission-line ratios and fluxes) and test the retrieval of different physical parameters. We find that fitting to standard diagnostic-line ratios from Baldwin et al. (1981) plus [O II]3726,3729/[O III]5007, Hbeta/ Halpha, [O I]6300/[O II]3726,3729 and Halpha flux, degeneracies remain between dust-to-metal mass ratio and ionisation parameter in the NLR gas, and between slope of the ionizing radiation (characterising the emission from the accretion disc around the central black hole) and total accretion-disc luminosity. Since these degeneracies bias the retrieval of other parameters even at maximal signal-to-noise ratio (S/N), without additional observables, we suggest fixing the slope of the ionizing radiation and dust-to-metal mass ratios in both NLR and HII regions. We explore the S/N in Hbeta required for un-biased estimates of physical parameters, finding that S/N(Hbeta)~10 is sufficient to identify a NLR contribution, but that higher S/N is required for un-biased parameter retrieval (~20 for NLR-dominated systems, ~sim30 for objects with approximately-equal Hbeta contributions from NLR and HII regions). We also compare the predictions of our models for different line ratios to previously-published models and data. By adding [He II]4686-line measurements to a set of published line fluxes for a sample of 463 AGN NLR, we show that our models with $-4<$ionisation parameter in the NLR gas$<-1.5$ can account for the full range of observed AGN properties in the local Universe., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures. Spitzer/IRAC imaging has revealed that the brightest $z\sim7-8$ galaxies often exhibit young ages and strong nebular line emission, hinting at high ionizing efficiency among early galaxies. However, IRAC's limited sensitivity has long hindered efforts to study the fainter, more numerous population often thought largely responsible for reionization. Here we use CEERS JWST/NIRCam data to characterize 116 UV-faint (median M$_{UV}=-19.5$) $z\sim6.5-8$ galaxies. The SEDs are typically dominated by young ($\sim$10-50 Myr), low-mass ($M_\ast\sim10^8\ M_\odot$) stellar populations, and we find no need for extremely high stellar masses ($\sim10^{11} M_\odot$). Considering previous studies of UV-bright (M$_{UV}\sim-22$) $z\sim7-8$ galaxies, we find evidence for a strong (5-10$\times$) increase in specific star formation rate toward lower luminosities (median sSFR=103 Gyr$^{-1}$ in CEERS). The larger sSFRs imply a more dominant contribution from OB stars in the relatively numerous UV-faint population, perhaps suggesting that these galaxies are very efficient ionizing agents (median $\xi_{ion}=10^{25.7}$ erg$^{-1}$ Hz). In spite of their much larger sSFRs, we find no significant increase in [OIII]$+$H$\beta$ EWs towards fainter M$_{UV}$ (median $\approx$780 $\mathring{A}$). If confirmed, this may indicate that a substantial fraction of our CEERS galaxies possess extremely low metallicities ($\lesssim$3% $Z_\odot$) where [OIII] emission is suppressed. Alternatively, high ionizing photon escape fractions or bursty star formation histories can also weaken the nebular lines in a subset of our CEERS galaxies. While the majority of our objects are very blue (median $\beta=-2.0$), we identify a significant tail of very dusty galaxies ($\beta\sim-1$) at $\approx$0.5$L_{UV}^\ast$ which may contribute significantly to the $z\sim7-8$ star formation rate density., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS. The ultraviolet (UV) continuum slope ($\beta~$where$~f_\lambda\propto\lambda^\beta$) of galaxies is sensitive to a variety of properties, from the metallicity and age of the stellar population to dust attenuation throughout the galaxy. Considerable attention has focused on identifying reionization-era galaxies with very blue UV slopes ($\beta<-3$). Not only do such systems provide a signpost of low-metallicity stars, but they also identify galaxies likely to leak ionizing photons from their HII regions as such blue UV slopes require the reddening effect of nebular continuum to be diminished. In this paper we present a search for reionization-era galaxies with very blue UV colors in recent JWST/NIRCam imaging of the EGS field. We characterize UV slopes for a large sample of$~z\simeq7-11~$galaxies, finding a median of$~\beta=-2.0$. Two lower luminosity (M$_{\rm{UV}}\simeq-19.5$) and lower stellar mass (6-10$\times10^7$M$_\odot$) systems exhibit extremely blue UV slopes ($\beta=-2.9~$to$~-3.1$) and rest-optical photometry indicating weak nebular line emission. Each system is very compact (r$_e\lesssim$260pc) with very high star-formation-rate surface densities. We model the SEDs with a suite of BEAGLE models with varying levels of ionizing photon escape. The COS Legacy Archive Spectroscopic SurveY (CLASSY) is designed to provide the community with a spectral atlas of 45 nearby star-forming galaxies which were chosen to cover similar properties as those seen at high-z (z>6). The prime high level science product of CLASSY is accurately coadded UV spectra, ranging from ~1000-2000A, derived from a combination of archival and new data obtained with HST's Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS). This paper details the multi-stage technical processes of creating this prime data product, and the methodologies involved in extracting, reducing, aligning, and coadding far-ultraviolet (FUV) and near-ultraviolet (NUV) spectra. We provide guidelines on how to successfully utilize COS observations of extended sources, despite COS being optimized for point sources, and best-practice recommendations for the coaddition of UV spectra in general. Moreover, we discuss the effects of our reduction and coaddition techniques in the scientific application of the CLASSY data. In particular, we find that accurately accounting for flux calibration offsets can affect the derived properties of the stellar populations, while customized extractions of NUV spectra for extended sources are essential for correctly diagnosing the metallicity of galaxies via CIII] nebular emission. Despite changes in spectral resolution of up to ~25% between individual datasets (due to changes in the COS line spread function), no adverse affects were observed on the difference in velocity width and outflow velocities of isolated absorption lines when measured in the final combined data products, owing in-part to our signal-to-noise regime of S/N<20., Comment: 31 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in ApJS

We report the discovery of a double-peaked Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) emitter (LAE) at $z=3.2177\pm0.0001$ in VLT/MUSE data. The galaxy is strongly lensed by the galaxy cluster RXC~J0018.5+1626 recently observed in the RELICS survey, and the double-peaked Ly$\alpha$ emission is clearly detected in the two counter images in the MUSE field-of-view. We measure a relatively high Ly$\alpha$ rest-frame equivalent width (EW) of $\mathrm{EW}_{\mathrm{Ly}\alpha,0}=(63\pm2)\,\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$. Additional near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy allows us to measure the H$\beta$, [OIII]$\lambda4959\,\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$ and [OIII]$\lambda5007\,\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$ emission lines, which show moderate rest-frame EWs of the order of a few $\sim10-100\,\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$, an [OIII]$\lambda5007\,\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$/H$\beta$ ratio of $4.8\pm0.7$, and a lower limit on the [OIII]/[OII] ratio of $>5.6$. The galaxy has very blue UV-continuum slopes of $\beta_{\mathrm{FUV}}=-2.23\pm0.06$ and $\beta_{\mathrm{NUV}}=-3.0\pm0.2$, and is magnified by factors $\mu\sim7-10$ in each of the two images, thus enabling a view into a low-mass ($M_{\star}\simeq10^{7.5}\,\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$) high-redshift galaxy analog. Notably, the blue peak of the Ly$\alpha$ profile is significantly stronger than the red peak, which suggests an inflow of matter and possibly very low HI column densities in its circumgalactic gas. Combined with the high lensing magnification and image multiplicity, these properties make this galaxy a prime candidate for follow-up observations to search for LyC emission and constrain the LyC photon escape fraction., Comment: Updated to match published version

Far-ultraviolet (FUV; ~1200-2000 angstroms) spectra are fundamental to our understanding of star-forming galaxies, providing a unique window on massive stellar populations, chemical evolution, feedback processes, and reionization. The launch of JWST will soon usher in a new era, pushing the UV spectroscopic frontier to higher redshifts than ever before, however, its success hinges on a comprehensive understanding of the massive star populations and gas conditions that power the observed UV spectral features. This requires a level of detail that is only possible with a combination of ample wavelength coverage, signal-to-noise, spectral-resolution, and sample diversity that has not yet been achieved by any FUV spectral database. We present the COS Legacy Spectroscopic SurveY (CLASSY) treasury and its first high level science product, the CLASSY atlas. CLASSY builds on the HST archive to construct the first high-quality (S/N_1500 >~ 5/resel), high-resolution (R~15,000) FUV spectral database of 45 nearby (0.002 < z < 0.182) star-forming galaxies. The CLASSY atlas, available to the public via the CLASSY website, is the result of optimally extracting and coadding 170 archival+new spectra from 312 orbits of HST observations. The CLASSY sample covers a broad range of properties including stellar mass (6.2 < logM_star(M_sol) < 10.1), star formation rate (-2.0 < log SFR (M_sol/yr) < +1.6), direct gas-phase metallicity (7.0 < 12+log(O/H) < 8.8), ionization (0.5 < O_32 < 38.0), reddening (0.02 < E(B-V < 0.67), and nebular density (10 < n_e (cm^-3) < 1120). CLASSY is biased to UV-bright star-forming galaxies, resulting in a sample that is consistent with z~0 mass-metallicity relationship, but is offset to higher SFRs by roughly 2 dex, similar to z >~2 galaxies. This unique set of properties makes the CLASSY atlas the benchmark training set for star-forming galaxies across cosmic time., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Metal-poor nearby galaxies hosting massive stars have a fundamental role to play in our understanding of both high-redshift galaxies and low metallicity stellar populations. But while much attention has been focused on their bright nebular gas emission, the massive stars that power it remain challenging to constrain. Here we present exceptionally deep Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet spectra targeting six galaxies that power strong nebular C IV emission approaching that encountered at $z>6$. We find that the strength and spectral profile of the nebular C IV in these new spectra follow a sequence evocative of resonant scattering models, indicating that the hot circumgalactic medium likely plays a key role in regulating C IV escape locally. We constrain the metallicity of the massive stars in each galaxy by fitting the forest of photospheric absorption lines, reporting measurements driven by iron that lie uniformly below 10% solar. Comparison with the gas-phase oxygen abundances reveals evidence for enhancement in O/Fe above solar across the sample, robust to assumptions about the absolute gas-phase metallicity scale. This supports the idea that these local systems are more chemically-similar to their primordial high-redshift counterparts than to the bulk of nearby galaxies. Finally, we find significant tension between the strong stellar wind profiles observed and our population synthesis models constrained by the photospheric forest in our highest-quality spectra. This reinforces the need for caution in interpreting wind lines in isolation at high-redshift, but also suggests a unique path towards validating fundamental massive star physics at extremely low metallicity with integrated ultraviolet spectra., Comment: 34 pages, 14 figures, submitted to AAS Journals
