Abstract

The selection of plastic packaging for foodstuffs requires consideration of many factors including the amount of molecular migration between the food and plastic and the permeation of water, light or other gases through the packaging. Migration is regulated based on the amount and the toxicity of the substance while permeation factors usually involve preserving the quality of the food. Other problems are the possible adsorption of food molecules by the polymer which can remove the aroma or the diffusion of volatile organic compounds that can cause off-odors or tastes.

Abstract

The materials selection process is a critical element in reaching the targeted properties of a plastic material suitable for a given application. An important factor when choosing a polymer is its average molecular weight because this determines the performance properties of the plastic material. The average molecular weight provides a measure of the strength of intermolecular forces of the material and thus, can be used to gauge its resistance to mechanical stress. It can be measured using the melt flow rate, a standard test that measures the ability of the polymer to flow through an orifice at a specific temperature and load.

Abstract

The use of plastic to make automobile fuel tanks may be hampered by new regulations governing hydrocarbon emissions from automobiles. The EPA is expected to require no more than 2 grams of hydrocarbon vapor loss over 24 hours for a complete vehicle. Unlike steel fuel tanks, plastic tanks are permeable to some hydrocarbon vapors and may not meet the standard. However, technologies exist to reduce plastic permeability which may allow its continued use in fuel tanks.
