The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic brought about significant disruptions in higher education, including changes within the field of academic librarianship. This paper reports on a March 2021 survey of tenure-track faculty librarians. The purpose was to identify the challenges they faced because of the pandemic, the effect on their confidence, and the impact on job responsibilities, workload, and promotion and tenure requirements. Key findings showed that several factors, including colleague retirements and changes in instructional needs, precipitated workplace changes during the pandemic. Furthermore, support for the meeting of promotion and tenure requirements diminished for most participants, as evidenced by decreases in funding for professional development and lack of time to devote to research and writing. Respondents also provided personal reflections regarding how work changed during the pandemic. This paper adds to the growing body of pandemic-related literature and proposes future research.

Map librarianship, in the past incorporating duties involving acquisition, cataloging, or curation of physical map and atlas collections, has evolved into a profession often requiring knowledge of geographic information systems (GIS) software and data. This study examines descriptions for map and geospatial academic library positions from 2015 to 2020 with a goal of observing trends in requirements and specific duties for these roles. Institutions are recruiting individuals with strong backgrounds in geospatial technologies for some positions. However, a Master of Library and Information Science degree is still preferred for new hires in this field. Graduate library and information science programs can support future academic librarians by incorporating coursework related to geospatial data and traditional map resources into their curricula.

The traditional map library full of map drawers, aerial photographs, atlases and globes has evolved to include computer terminals and data collection equipment. Library patrons are accessing maps and geospatial data digitally. As the library has changed, so has the role of the map librarian. Historically, specialized coursework for map librarianship has been minimal in graduate library science programs. To effectively support library users of geographic information system (GIS), education is needed in this field, as well. A survey was distributed to map librarians via email listserv with a goal of observing trends in job duties and educational backgrounds of today's map librarians. The views of 67 responding map librarians regarding training, professional development and the direction of map librarianship as a profession were also collected. The resulting data show a strong need for training opportunities for work with paper maps as well as GIS data and software. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
