Qualitative research that investigates the knowledge and cultural practices of the diaguita women of the Chilean northern Chico and their relationship with ancestral medicine. The diaguita have been made invisible as protagonists of the healing processes, in an andro-centered and subalternizing treatment, which contrasts with the abundant evidence on the importance of women in the survival of ancestral medicine. The methodology was based on a feminist ethnography carried out in the regions of Atacama and Coquimbo (Chile), between 2021 and 2023, with traditional diaguita authorities. The results show the characteristics, elements and strategies used in the healing processes developed by diaguita women, also highlighting the importance of medicinal plants. It is concluded that the diaguita are carriers and transmitters of ancestral knowledge and traditional practices in a matrilineal and intergenerational manner, establishing ancestral medicine as a form of decolonizing cultural resistance.

- Abstract
Introduction: Opportunistic fungal infections have increased in recent decades, requiring the search for therapeutic alternatives, also considering the appearance of new species and the increase in resistance to antifungals. Objective: This study describes plants of the Verbenaceae family with therapeutic potential against yeast fungi. Methodology: A systematic review was carried from 2015 to 2020, using different databases, applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, also exploring recent perspectives to 2022. Results and discussion: 5 genera and 14 species with potential antifungal activity were found, highlighting the genus Lippia which showed greater activity. The essential oil of the leaves was the most studied natural product, mainly active against Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans. Phytochemical analysis report mostly terpene-type metabolites such as carvacrol, thymol, linanol, and geraniol. For the determination of MIC, the in vitro technique of microdilution in broth was the most reported. Recent studies support the importance of species, including Lantana montevidensis (Spreng.) Briq., for their modulating activity of antifungal drugs. Conclusions: Five genera with potential activity were found: Aloysia, Lantana, Lippia, Stachytarpheta and Verbena; being of interest the species Lippia berlandieri Schauer and Lippia graveolens Kunth for its high activity against C. albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans. The importance of species of the Verbenaceae family for future research is recognized, which will allow the development of natural therapeutic alternatives against infections caused by yeast-like fungi.

Antibiotic resistance is a growing concern worldwide, necessitating the exploration of alternative antimicrobial agents. Platymiscium pinnatum (Jacq), a tree belonging to the Fabaceae family, has traditionally held medicinal value, particularly in the form of leaf infusions for treating skin and eye infections. This study delves into the antibacterial potential of the ethanolic extract obtained from the bark of P. pinnatum. Employing the renowned Kirby-Bauer agar diffusion method, the antibacterial activity of the extract against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was assessed. The results indicated inhibition zones in several Gram-positive strains, with Staphylococcus aureus showing the highest susceptibility. This points to the potential of the extract as a therapeutic agent against infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria. In contrast, the bioactivity of the extract was comparatively limited against prominent Gram-negative strains, such as E. coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The differential activity between Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria may be due to the mode of action or specific compounds within the extract. The distinctive antibacterial properties of the P. pinnatum bark extract suggests its potential as a source for the development of new antimicrobial agents. These findings are crucial in charting the course for future phytochemical analyses and studies to understand the specific bioactive components responsible for the observed effects. This paper contributes to studies on the practices of collectionism, going beyond the institutional histories of museums and herbariums to examine how specimens were collected and to identify the people who consolidated those practices. Centered on research by Mexico's Instituto Médico Nacional (IMN, National Institute of Medicine, Mexico City, 1890-1915), I trace the itineraries and explorations of various figures: naturalists, collectors, physicians, and entrepreneurs. The article describes the distinct strategies these figures used to collect medicinal plants, animals, and minerals in rural areas, far from the spaces of scientific institutions. Through the accounts of the naturalist Fernando Altamirano (1848-1908) of the IMN, and the American Cyrus Guernesey Pringle (1838-1911) of the Gray Herbarium and Smithsonian Institution, I visit the places where they collected, focusing as well on the invisible actors who participated in those searches for knowledge, including indigenous peasants and peons who, from the countryside, contributed significantly to their medical and botanical surveys of "Mexico's nature." Plant and human life are entangled in an organic meshwork. Considering the understandings about them and the ways of knowledge associated with their practical application, plants emerge as a privileged subject to demonstrate the overlap of different ontologies making it possible to highlight the plurality of ways of seeing and being in the world. This essay aims to reflect about the power of plants and their presence in popular medicine experienced in the southern region of Minas Gerais; the chosen approach crosses with religiosity when discussing the practice of benzimento. The methodology contemplates a multi-sited ethnography based on a circuit followed throughout the research and the flows that connect the different locations. By focusing on the plants, the results point to their importance, especially in relation to the production of healing and blessing, by the overlapping of cultural, ritual, medicinal and food aspects. Health and quality of life can be improved by using medicinal plants. In today's scientific arena there is a huge need for integrating modern algorithms for proving worth of any traditional system of knowledge. Two such plants used traditionally to cure health related disorders are Arnebia and Dactylorhiza. Arnebia has medicinal properties for treating sore throats, fevers, and other ailments and Dactylorhiza is traditionally used for the treatment of dysentery, diarrhea, chronic fever, stomachaches, as well as wounds and burns. It is also used to increase regenerative fluid in debilitated women after childbirth and to treat general weakness. Very few experimental studies are done to prove the therapeutic importance of both these plants. In this research work, therefore Data Mining algorithm of Clustering implemented through WEKA has been used for proving the therapeutic value of both the plants. The phytoconstituents of both the plants have been tested, using various attributes, to belong to a particular drug class and hence falling in the cluster to which these drugs belong. This kind of research work can open up multifarious ways of data analysis with merger of new techniques into traditional practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To evaluate the association between a history of comorbidities and the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to prevent COVID-19 in Lambayeque, Peru. Material and Methods: Analytical cross-sectional study that used information from the database of the Red Prestacional Lambayeque of the Social Security of Health. The outcome variable was the self-report of having consumed and/or used some type of MAC during the pandemic to prevent COVID-19. The main independent variable was the self-reported history of having any comorbidity. Sociodemographic and clinical confounding variables were included. To assess the association of interest, crude (PRc) and adjusted (PRa) prevalence ratios were calculated using Poisson regression models with robust variances. Results: A total of 243 participants with a history of COVID-19 were surveyed. Most were male (54.7%), and the median age was 29 [25-59] years. 29.2% used CAM to prevent COVID-19. In the adjusted model, a history of comorbidity increased the probability of CAM use (PR: 1.55; 95% CI: 1.05 - 2.28; p: 0.028). Conclusions: A history of comorbidity was associated with a higher probability of CAM consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic in adults to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The Solanaceae family is one of the most important families of angiosperms from an economic point of view. With nearly 100 genera and 3,000 species, it includes important food, condiment, and medicinal plants. One of the three most varied and extensive genera of Solanaceae is Lycianthes. Lycianthes sanctaeclarae (Greenm.) D’Arcy, is a species native to Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panama. which is found in the rainforest at an altitude of 0 to 600 meters above sea level. Objective: The purpose of this research is to obtain information about the species Lychianthes sanctaeclarae for the determination of the ethnobotanical potential of said species, through a bibliographic database review. Method: A bibliographic review and an analysis of the possible ethnobotanical applications, biological activities, and chemical constitution of the Solanaceae family, specifically Lycianthes sanctaeclarae, were conducted. Results: Solanaceae has floristic, ethnobotanical, ornamental, ritual, economic, and medical importance. They include a wide variety of phytochemicals, among which alkaloids stand out, with interesting biological properties, with anticholinergic activity being the most investigated. Conclusions: The lack of information that exists on the species Lycianthes sanctaeclarae was determined. Even so, due to its relationship with the Solanaceae family, it is possible to consider that this species could be a striking option for the development of new drugs; However, it is necessary in the future to identify, isolate, purify, and characterize the bioactive compounds that this species has by constructing its phytochemical profile. - Abstract
The Word, as the creative principle of life, is a concept found in many cultures, from the Hebraic to the Uitotos (or Murui) of the Colombian Amazon. The author finds parallels between the immersion of Joyce's Finnegans Wake in the Word as the key to unlocking different but interrelated dimensions of reality, and the cosmo-vision of the Murui. Finnegans Wake presents a panoptic view of practically the whole of life and history in the form of the dream world of a Dublin tavern owner. It deploys a complex use of word play, hidden meanings and mutations of language to depict both the conscious and subconscious perceptions of our primal humanity. Similarly, virtually every word of the Murui myths has multiple meanings and they embody a manual of correct thought and behavior ranging from spirituality to the practicalities of daily life. Their premier shamanic plants, mambe and ambil, derivatives of coca and tobacco, respectively, are the inspiration for the nightly colloquiums in their malocas (longhouses) where the meanings of their myths are teased out by the participants, guided by their medicine man, in a free-ranging conversation that, while it seems to be digressive, adheres, as does Joyce, to the inner logic of the Word. The author ends with some reflections on his own struggles, as a writer to grapple with the Word, which, as it communicates, also mystifies. For the Murui, this urge towards omniscience may have arisen because their survival depended on articulating all of the interrelated nuances of their environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we analyze the process of social production of knowledge regarding the use of medicinal plants in three groups of rural women who gather and commercialize plants in the department of Canelones, Uruguay. This study is based on the hypothesis that the social labeling of these practices as exclusive to the domestic sphere has decontextualized and hidden the production of knowledge in such spaces, invisibilizing and not recognizing female contributions. We analyze four behavioral dynamics of this knowledge (conservation, erosion, innovation and transformation) in relation to the influence of the sex/gender system in the production and social valuation of this knowledge. Finally, given that these groups of women commercialize medicinal plants and products, we reflect on the transition of this knowledge into the commercial sphere, the consequences, possible changes and the effects on the social valuation of this knowledge. Backgrounds and aims: The ethnobotanical heritage of the Huarpe community has not yet been documented, and could be lost. The objective of the work was to compile the medicinal ethnobotanical knowledge of the Huarpe Nation People of San Luis (Argentina) of the La Represita area, through dialogical meetings between the members of the community and the university. M&M: The fieldwork included semi-structured interviews and surveys of 31 residents, three workshops with the local educational community, and two meetings open ti the entire population. An analysis of the medicinal uses of local plant resources was carried out, which included the calculation of ethnobotanical indices: Relative frequency of citation, Fidelity level, Use Value and Novelty index. Results: The number of taxa used by the inhabitants for medicinal purposes was 48 and the most used parts of the plants were the leaves and stems, mainly in the form of infusion. Through the calculation of ethnobotanical indices, it was obtained that the aromatic plants were particularly important as medicinal resources. Fourteen medicinal and three veterinary etic categories were registered, the most prominent being those related to human digestive and respiratory disorders. Conclusions: Huarpe inhabitants of San Luis, and particularly women, treasure important knowledge about medicinal plants that are part of the actions of their daily life. For this reason, it is important to continue research through new studies that include the residents of the Huarpe Pinkanta community of San Luis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
