3. Crustacea Stomatopoda and Decapoda collected by the MesoRun and HydMeR projects in Réunion Island, with 16 new records

Abstract

A sampling of stomatopod and decapod crustaceans has been performed between 60-110 m off Reunion Island. Most of the specimens are very small, collected with hydrozoan or antipatharian hosts. Thirtyone species have been recognized, including 16 new records for Reunion Island. With these new observations, 598 species of Stomatopoda and Decapoda are now reported from Réunion Island.

Abstract

Nine species of marine fishes are observed from R��union Island for the first time, during a faunal inventory under MesoRun program (Meso: mesophotic and Run: Reunion). These species, Dunckerocampus boylei Kuiter 1998 (Syngnathidae), Luzonichthys waitei (Fowler, 1931) (Serranidae), Plectranthias winniensis (Tyler, 1966) (Serranidae), Ostorhinchus fukuii (Hayashi, 1990) (Apogonidae), Hoplolatilus cuniculus Randall & Dooley, 1974 (Malacanthidae), Pterocaesio lativittata (Carpenter, 1987) (Caesionidae), Halichoeres trispilus Randall & Smith, 1982 (Labridae), Priolepis nocturna (Smith, 1957) (Gobiidae) and Canthigaster tyleri Allen & Randall, 1977 (Tetraodontidae) were photographed in the lower mesophotic zone (70-110 m depth). New depth records are provided for Luzonichthys waitei (102 m), Ostorhinchus fukuii (100 m), Pterocaesio lativittata (100 m), Halichoeres trispilus (110 m), Priolepis nocturna (97 m) and Canthigaster tyleri (85 m). The ichthyological diversity in the mesophotic zone in the southwestern Indian Ocean, especially within mesophotic coral ecosystems, has been poorly studied. More thorough sampling efforts would probably result in the photographing of new species never before observed in R��union Island.

Abstract

Ichthyofaunal assemblages of mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs) remain largely uncharacterized in the Western Indian Ocean. Recent underwater exploration of MCEs on the island of Réunion in the Mascarene Archipelago, Western Indian Ocean, resulted in several high-quality photographs of the island’s deep reef ichthyofauna. We report new distributional records for Plectranthias inermis Randall, 1980 and Pseudanthias bimarginatus Randall, 2011 at Réunion Island based on field observations and underwater photographs. Additionally, we provide new live photographs of the little-known Réunion Angelfish, Apolemichthys guezei (Randall & Maugé, 1978), representing only the second photographic documentation of this elusive and apparently endemic species.
