Cover crops can provide suppression of weeds and together with chemical control make the proper management of weeds in agricultural areas. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of cover crop cultivation during the off-season on weed development in a no-tillage area. The experimental design was in randomized blocks scheme with six treatments and four replications. The treatments were: fallow (control), millet (Pennisetum glaucum) + crotalaria (Crotalaria spectabilis + C. juncea + C. ochroleuca), millet + pigeon pea (Cajanus cajans), millet + Urochloa ruziziensis, millet + Urochloa ruziziensis + pigeon pea and millet + buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum. The evaluations were done at 30, 75 and 225 days after sowing of the cover crops (DAS). The main growth weed species in the area were Cenchrus echinathus, Euphorbia heterophylla and Digitaria insularis. Fallow treatment showed greater number of weed species with density of 184 plants m-2, 9.0 species and with 527.8 g m-2 of dry matter mass at 225 DAS. In all treatments verified reduction in the density and mass of weeds dry matter compared to the fallow, with average of 30 plants m-2, 5.8 species and 7.9 g m-2 at 225 DAS, respectively. RESUMO Plantas de cobertura podem proporcionar supressão de plantas daninhas e juntamente com o controle químico compor o manejo adequado de plantas daninhas nas áreas agrícolas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o efeito do cultivo de plantas de cobertura durante a entressafra sobre o desenvolvimento de plantas daninhas em área de plantio direto. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, com seis tratamentos e quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram compostos das seguintes coberturas vegetais: 1. pousio (testemunha), 2. milheto (Pennisetum glaucum) + crotalárias (Crotalaria spectabilis + C. juncea + C. ochroleuca), 3. milheto + feijão-guandu (Cajanus cajans), 4. milheto + Urochloa ruziziensis, 5. milheto + Urochloa ruziziensis + feijão-guandu e 6. milheto + trigo mourisco (Fagopyrum esculentum). As avaliações foram realizadas aos 30, 75 e 225 dias após a semeadura (DAS) das plantas de cobertura. As principais plantas daninhas na área foram Cenchrus echinathus, Euphorbia heterophylla e Digitaria insularis. A área de pousio apresentou a maior quantidade, número de espécies e produção de matéria seca de plantas daninhas com densidade de 184 plantas m-2, 9,0 espécies e 527,8 g m-2 de matéria seca aos 225 DAS. Em todos os tratamentos com plantas de cobertura constatou-se que reduziu a densidade e a massa seca das plantas daninhas em comparação com o pousio, com média de 30 plantas m-2, 5,8 espécies m-1 e 7,9 g m-2 aos 225 DAS, respectivamente. Constata-se que o uso de plantas de cobertura é importante estratégia para o controle de plantas daninhas nas áreas agrícolas.

Many researchers have reported relationships of physical and chemical properties with water erosion; however, little is known about microbiological properties in this context. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate soil properties in relation to erosion in areas with different cropping system practices under no-tillage in the Brazilian Cerrado. The experiment has been carried out since 2014 in a Typic Haplustox under soybean (S) and maize (M) monoculture, maize/soybean annual rotation (MS), maize/brachiaria/soybean/brachiaria rotation (MBSB), two of those treatments with high input of fertilizer (MBSB-HI and MS-HI), and bare soil (BS). Soil losses were quantified in erosion plots. The design was completely randomized. The greater vegetation cover crop, provided by intercropping/succession with brachiaria, increased microbial biomass carbon. The lack of vegetation cover affected the basal soil respiration and metabolic quotient. Basal soil respiration proved to be inversely related to soil and water losses. Vegetation cover was a key factor regulating water erosion. Penetration resistance and aggregate stability correlated with soil and water losses. Thus, not only physical and chemical, but also biological properties are deeply affected by erosion, aiding in early monitoring of water erosion. Atividade alimentar da fauna do solo em sistemas de produção sob palhadas de plantas de cobertura Conservar o nível desejável de qualidade do solo, especialmente prezando sua saúde e sustentabilidade, não é tarefa simples, devido aos inúmeros fatores que o influenciam. Objetivou-se mensurar a atividade alimentar da fauna do solo em sistemas de produção sob palhadas de plantas de cobertura amostradas à profundidade de 0-8,0 cm. Foi adotado delineamento em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições e oito tratamentos, que corresponderam ao cultivo de soja sob palhadas de plantas de cobertura: monocultivo de milho; milho consorciado com Urochloa ruziziensis; monocultivo de U. ruziziensis; sorgo consorciado com U. ruziziensis; monocultivo de sorgo; girassol consorciado com U. ruziziensis; mix (milheto + Crotalaria spectabilis + U. ruziziensis) e pousio. À profundidade de 1,0 cm, houve variação de 63,59-37,06 % no consumo entre os tratamentos, com maior consumo para o mix, em comparação ao pousio. À profundidade de 2,0-7,0 cm, o consumo não variou entre os tratamentos. Para a profundidade de 8,0 cm, o pousio apresentou o maior consumo (45,76 %; p < 0,05), em comparação ao girassol consorciado com U. ruziziensis (20,51 %), sorgo (20,58 %) e sorgo consorciado com U. ruziziensis (18,96 %). HIGHLIGHTS Multifunctional microorganisms promote the nutrient enrichment in Crotalaria plants. Cover crop residues are vital in managing soil fertility. Nutritionally improved cover crops increase soil nutrient levels for the subsequent crop. RESUMO Plantas de cobertura são essenciais na recuperação da produtividade do solo. Crotalaria é uma das mais eficientes espécies de leguminosas em termo de produção de biomassa e fixação de nitrogênio. Objetivou-se neste estudo avaliar o efeito de microorganismos multifuncionais no desempenho agronômico de Crotalaria juncea, C. spectabilis e C. ochroleuca. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram em seis isolados de rizobactérias (BRM 32109 e BRM 32110 (Bacillus sp.), BRM 32111 e BRM 32112 (Pseudomonas sp.), BRM 32113 (Burkholderia sp.), BRM 32114 (Serratia sp.)) e um isolado fúngico (Trichoderma sp. (T-26)), além do tratamento controle (sem microrganismo). O principal efeito dos microorganismos multifuncionais sobre as três espécies de Crotalaria foi o aumento da concentração de macro e micronutrientes. Enxofre e zinco aumentaram na raiz de plantas de C. juncea; cálcio e enxofre na parte aérea de plantas de C. spectabilis; e plantas de C. ochroleuca apresentaram maior concentração de fósforo e cobre na parte aérea e de zinco e cobre na raiz. Em resumo, o melhor status nutricional em plantas de Crotalaria afeta diretamente a disponibilidade de nutrientes para a cultura subsequente.

Cultivation of cover crops in the off-season and the use of multifunctional microorganisms are strategic technologies to ensure sustainability in upland rice production. The objective of this work was to determine the effect of mix of cover crops cultivated in the off-season and multifunctional microorganisms on the growth promotion of upland rice plants, under no-tillage systems conducted in the Brazilian Cerrado. The experimental design was a complete randomized blocks in a 6x2 factorial scheme with four replications. The treatments consisted of a combination of six soil covering plants 1. Fallow (control); 2. millet (Pennisetum glaucum) and crotalaria (Crotalaria juncea, C. spectabilis and C. ochroleuca); 3. millet and pigeon pea (Cajanus cajanus); 4. millet and Urochoa ruziziensis; 5. millet, U. ruziziensis and pigeon pea; and 6. millet and buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum)), with or without the application of coinoculants 1301 (Bacillus sp.) + Azospirillum sp. The mix of cover crops millet + U. ruziziensis and millet + U. ruziziensis + pigeon pea recorded the largest biomass production and the highest nutrient content in the straw. Rice plants cultivated after millet + pigeon pea showed largest transpiration and stomata conductance. The application of multifunctional microorganisms contributed to an increase of 29% in the photosynthetic rates of rice plants. The highest upland rice grain yield was achieved after mix of millet + crotalaria (Crotalaria juncea, C. spectabilis and C. ochroleuca). The application of multifunctional microorganisms increased the mass of 1000 grains, but does not affect rice grain yield. O sistema de plantio direto sobre a palha é uma tecnologia consolidada e considerada a segunda revolução verde (Pereira, 1997). Atualmente, as pesquisas e validações de campo vem buscando seu aprimoramento em função das condições ambientais e dos fatores de crescimento nas diversas regiões. Neste sentido, o sucesso deste sistema deve-se a palha deixada por culturas de cobertura sobre a superfície do solo, criando um ambiente favorável ao crescimento e desenvolvimento da cultura principal subsequente (Alvarenga et al., 2001). A modernização dos sistemas de produção tem levado a busca por culturas de cobertura que não se restrinja apenas à proteção do solo, mas que apresente outras funcionalidades (Jian et al., 2020). Assim, embora a escolha da planta de cobertura seja um processo de certa forma complexo devido à pouca disponibilidade de famílias/espécies de plantas, este processo é primordial para garantir a evolução e os aumentos em produtividade do sistema. Na escolha desta planta devem ser considerados os objetivos para a lavoura, por exemplo, proteção e reestruturação física, química e biológica do solo, controle de nematoides e/ou interrupção de ciclos de pragas e doenças, aumento da biodiversidade, entre outros. O aumento da biodiversidade de plantas em cobertura, como ocorrem em sistemas consorciados, promove o aumento das características benéficas sobre o solo e, consequentemente, na cultura principal pela ação aditiva e conjugada das espécies (Silveira et al., 2020). Para exemplificar, o consórcio entre uma gramínea e uma leguminosa aumenta a proteção e estruturação do solo, e a ciclagem de nutrientes pela maior ação exploratória das raízes em profundidade (leguminosas) e subsuperfície (gramínea), além do aumento da biomassa, a qual resultará em maior quantidade e melhor qualidade da palhada em função da diferente relação carbono/nitrogênio (C/N) nas gramíneas e leguminosas (Calvo et al., 2010). The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of isolated or combined roots and straw of black oat and wheat, as previous crops in autumn/winter, on the performance of soybean in succession. The experiment was carried out in the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 crop seasons in a randomized complete block design, with four replicates. The following seven treatments were applied in the autumn/winter of 2017 and 2018, before soybean planting: fallow; straw of black oat or wheat, distributed on plots kept under fallow during autumn/winter, without roots; plots only with roots of black oat or wheat, without straw; and plots with straw and roots of black oat or wheat. Soybean crop performance was estimated using the following variables: plant density, leaf area index, soil plant analysis development (SPAD) index, shoot dry matter, grain yield, and yield components. In comparison with fallow, the cultivation of black oat or wheat, as previous crops during the autumn/winter, increases soybean grain yield. The impact of the roots of black oat or wheat on soybean yield is similar to that of straw. Soybean agronomic performance is improved in the combined presence of roots and straw of black oat or wheat. Resumo - O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência de raízes e palha, isoladamente ou combinadas, de aveia-preta e trigo, como culturas prévias no outono/inverno, sobre o desempenho da cultura de soja em sucessão. O experimento foi conduzido nas safras de 2017/2018 e 2018/2019, em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições. Foram aplicados os seguintes sete tratamentos no outono/inverno de 2017 e 2018, antes do plantio da soja: pousio; palha de aveia-preta ou de trigo distribuída em parcelas mantidas em pousio durante o outono/inverno, sem a presença de raízes; parcelas apenas com raízes de aveia-preta ou de trigo, sem a presença de palha; e parcelas com palha e raízes de aveia-preta ou trigo. O desempenho da cultura de soja foi estimado pelas seguintes variáveis: densidade de plantas, índice de área foliar, índice ?soil plant analysis development? (SPAD), massa seca da parte aérea, produtividade de grãos e componentes do rendimento. Comparativamente ao pousio, o cultivo de aveia-preta ou trigo, como culturas prévias durante o outono-inverno, aumenta a produtividade da soja em sucessão. A Região Centro-Oeste possui uma área de 160 milhões de hectares, correspondendo a 18,9% do território brasileiro (IBGE, 2010). No entanto, 119 milhões são estabelecimentos agropecuários em que ~43% são área destinada à preservação da vegetação nativa, segundo a estimativa apresentada pela (Embrapa, 2017) com base nos dados do Cadastro Ambiental Rural. É notório o grande potencial de produção agrícola da região Centro-Oeste, tornando-se o principal polo agropecuário do país. Isto ocorre em função da grande proporção da área encontrada no Bioma Cerrado, caracterizado por relevo suavemente ondulados, solos profundos e bem drenados, favorecendo a agricultura mecanizada (Pedreira et al., 2017). No entanto, estes solos apresentam baixa fertilidade natural e acidez acentuada, que são potencialmente corrigidos. Em termos de produção, a região Centro- Oeste foi responsável por aproximadamente 120 milhões de toneladas (47% da produção nacional de grãos), ranking liderado pelo Mato Grosso com 73,4 milhões de toneladas segundo a Companhia Nacional de Abastecimento (CONAB, 2020). A região também é polo nacional na produção de bovinos de corte, contemplando um rebanho de 73,2 milhões de cabeças, segundo o relatório da Associação Brasileira de Indústrias Exportadoras de Carne (ABIEC, 2019). O posicionamento estratégico, alta tecnologia de produção, relevo e clima também são propícios para o desenvolvimento de sistemas de produção sustentáveis. The objective of this work was to evaluate the dry matter yield of cover crops and their suppressive effects on weeds. The experiment was carried out during three years in a cerrado area of the state of Goiás, Brazil, and consisted of 16 treatments with fallow and cover crops cultivated in single cropping and intercropping. Fallow allowed high weed infestation. Cover crops affected the composition of weeds, which showed greater diversity in fallow, followed by the Pennisetum glaucum 'BRS 1501' and Cajanus cajan crops. In the average of the three experimental years, the highest dry matter yield was observed for the treatments Panicum maximum (10,857 kg ha-1), Urochloa brizantha 'Piatã' (11,437 kg ha-1), U. ruziziensis (9,463 kg ha-1), and U. ruziziensis intercropped with Crotalaria spectabilis (9,167 kg ha-1), which prevented weed infestation. No-tillage is an agricultural system that is proposed as a sustainable soil management system. This paper aims to evaluate the short-term effects of cover crops on a no-tillage system, by assessing a number of physical and chemical attributes of soil of the Brazilian Amazon region. The experiment was carried out in a typical Ferralsol under a no-tillage system from March to December, 2014. A randomized block design, with four replicates was used. The performance and effects of fourteen cover crops (Cajanus cajan, Canavalia ensiformis, Crotalaria juncea, Crotalaria ochroleuca, Crotalaria spectabilis, Stizolobium aterrima, Stizolobium cinereum, Pennisetum glaucum, Sorghum bicolor, Sorghum sudanense, Urochloa brizanha cv. Xaraés, Urochloa brizantha cv. Piatã and Urochloa ruziziensis and Zea mays) and fallow (control treatment) on the soil quality were assessed. The cover crops were sown in the off season in April 2014, before the summer crop (maize). The levels of P, K, Ca2+, Mg2+, Al3+, H+Al, saturation by aluminum, sum of bases, organic matter, pH and resistance to soil penetration were evaluated following the end of the cover crops growth. Some near-surface soil attributes were affected by the cover crops. Urochloa species improved the levels of potassium in the soil at depths up to 5 cm below the surface. The highest penetration resistance was observed in the superficial layer between 12 and 16 cm deep, with penetration resistance values varying between 2472 and 2912 kPa. The Urochloa exhibited satisfactory agronomic performance when grown under a simulated crop livestock integration system. It is concluded that the use of cover crops in a no-till system has the potential to improve the chemical quality of soil in the Southwestern Amazon region. As plantas de cobertura têm a finalidade de cobrir, proteger o solo e fornecer palhada para o Sistema de Plantio Direto (SPD), e são cultivadas em áreas que seriam destinadas ao pousio ou antecedendo culturas comerciais. O uso dessas plantas no SPD na região do Cerrado pode proporcionar melhorias nas condições físicas, químicas e biológicas dos solos, bem como na saúde e desenvolvimento das culturas de interesse econômico. Na escolha da planta de cobertura para a sua área o produtor deve optar por espécies que atendam às suas necessidades e que tenham bom desenvolvimento na região. Existe uma grande variedade de espécies adaptadas à região do Cerrado, principalmente do grupo das gramíneas ou leguminosas, que podem proporcionar benefícios distintos ao solo e às culturas comerciais. As espécies também possuem características diferentes que podem favorecer o melhor aproveitamento dos recursos do meio, ou ter efeito sinergético nos benefícios proporcionados pelo uso de somente uma espécie de planta de cobertura. Assim, a utilização de mix de plantas de cobertura, principalmente com espécies que apresentem características contrastantes, vem crescendo uma vez que podem proporcionar maiores benefícios ao sistema do que o cultivo de espécies solteiras, como maior disponibilidade de nutrientes para as culturas e maior proteção do solo. Portanto o uso de plantas de cobertura, isoladas ou em mix, é uma ótima alternativa para melhorar a qualidade do solo e beneficiar as culturas comerciais em sucessão, podendo contribuir para a intensificação da agricultura sustentável no Cerrado. O estudo aborda o tema 'Utilização de plantas de cobertura como alternativa de manejo sustentável'. Trata-se de uma pesquisa bibliográfica, pautada nos pressupostos teóricos de vários autores e fontes sobre o tema abordado no presente estudo. Nestes termos, o estudo teve como principal objetivo apresentar informações relacionadas a utilização de plantas de cobertura como alternativa de manejo sustentável, com a finalidade de gerar informações que auxiliem pesquisas futuras, bem como para nortear produtores quanto a implementação dessa prática visando a conservação ambiental. O estudo se justifica devido ao aumento da população mundial demandar uma grande quantidade de alimentos produzidos, o que se torna um desafio, produzir em quantidade e com qualidade considerando a sustentabilidade. Diante dessa problemática, as plantas de cobertura quando adequadamente utilizadas constituem uma estratégia para melhoria dos atributos físicos, químicos e biológicos do solo agregando incremento na produtividade e sustentabilidade ao sistema agrícola. The maize intercropped with legume cover crops are used at low technological agriculture, due it?s potential to suppress weeds, recycle nutrients, and cover the soil. Weeds suppression it is important due to its competition effect on the commercial crops. The nutrient recycling it is important due to the low fertilizer use on low technological agriculture. The soil cover it is important to prevent the erosion and reduce the nutrients leaching. All those positive effects can be influenced due to the cultivated species on the consortium. This study aimed to evaluate the soil coverage, the phytomass production and, the accumulation of nutrients by plants in a maize and legume cover crops intercropping system. The experiment consisted of rustic maize ?Caiano de Sobrália? variety, intercropped with Brazilian velvet bean, black mucuna, lablab-bean and pigeon pea; a control treatment (sole maize culture) was added. The maize was sown on the experiment; 64 DAE, the legumes were sowed. The soil cover rates were evaluated at 0, 64, 84, 120, and 144 DAE. The corn grains were harvested at 120 DAE, resulting in the corn grain yields. The remaining portion of maize and entire legume cover crop plants were sampled at 144 DAE, when the accumulation of dry mass and nutrient were measured. The consortium system did not affect the corn grains yield and, the soil cover rate provided by maize plants. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados em parcelas subdivididas com 3 repetições.No primeiro ano,nas parcelas foram alocados os sistemas de manejo do solo:semeadura direta (SD) e cultivo mínimo (CM) e nas subparcelas as plantas de cobertura:Pennisetum glaucum, Urochloa ruziziensis, Crotalaria spectabilis, Crotalaria ochroleuca,consórcio dePennisetum glaucum+ Crotalaria spectabilise vegetação espontânea. Avaliou-seaprodução de massa seca (MS) e acúmulo de nutriente das plantas de cobertura. No segundo ano a soja foi cultivada sob a palhada remanescentedas plantas de cobertura. Para o estudo da marcha deabsorção levou-seem consideração as plantas de soja cultivadas sobCrotalaria spectabilise milheto e as subparcelas passam a corresponder aos dias após a emergência (DAE) de plantas de soja que foram: 31, 38, 45, 52, 59, 66, 73, 80, 87, 94, 101, 108 e 115.Na soja foi avaliado ocrescimento das plantas,aprodução de massa seca (MS),o acúmulo de nutrientes e a produtividade de grãos. Após a colheita avaliou-se no solo carbono e nitrogênio da biomassa microbiana (C-BMS e N-BMS), respiração basal (RBS), quociente metabólico (qCO2), atividade enzimáticadadesidrogenasee dodiacetatode fluoresceína (FDA).A soja sob Crotalaria spectabilisem SD apresentou maior altura. Até os 94 DAE as folhas foram os órgãosque contribuíram em maior acúmulo da MS seca total. Até os 66 DAE maior acúmulo de macronutrientes foi propiciado pelas condições da SD. Em SD a ordem decrescente deacúmulo foi: N >K >Ca >P> Mg >S e N >K >Ca >S> P >Mg, sob Crotalaria spectabilise milheto, respectivamente.Em CM sob ambas as coberturas a ordemdecrescente de acúmulofoi: N> K> Ca> P> S> Mgeos micronutrientes a ordem foi: Fe> Mn> Zn >B> Cu.Os macronutrientes exportados pela soja em maior e menor quantidade foram: N e Ca, respectivamente.A vegetação espontânea apresentou baixo C-BMS e N-BMS, baixa atividade enzimática e alto qCO2.A produtividade de grãos da soja aumentou em sucessão a milheto+Crotalaria spectabilis. Searching for alternatives to deal with weeds without the exclusive use of herbicides can increase the sustainability of agricultural production in the Amazon region. This study aimed to evaluate the allelopathic potential of cover crops on the weed shrubby false buttonweed (Spermacoce verticillata L.). Three straw levels (1; 2.5 and 5 mg cm-2) of thirteen cover crops (Cajanus cajan, Canavalia ensiformis, Crotalaria juncea, C. ochroleuca, C. spectabilis, Mucuna aterrima, M. cinereum, Pennisetum glaucum, Sorghum bicolor, S. sudanense, Urochloa brizanha cv. Xaraés, U. brizantha cv. Piatã and U. ruziziensis) were assessed on germination and initial growth of weed and lettuce. We carried out two experiments (weed and lettuce) in a factorial scheme (cover crops x straw levels) with additional treatment (control without straw) in a completely randomized experimental design, with four replicates. The straw of the cover crops inhibited the germination and initial growth of the target plants. The highest straw levels promoted 44.0 and 78.8% reductions in radicle length in relation to the lowest dose (1 mg cm-2), for lettuce and Spermacoce verticillata, respectively. The highest sensitivity to allelochemicals occurred on the radicle. The major suppressive effects on weed germination were promoted by Cajanus cajan, Urochloa brizanha cv. Xaraés, Mucuna cinereum, M. aterrima, Canavalia ensiformis, Crotalaria juncea, C. spectabilis and U. ruziziensis. Cover crops use is an integrated practice management to control Spermacoce verticillata under no-tillage system. RESUMO: A busca por alternativas no manejo de plantas daninhas sem a utilização exclusiva de herbicidas pode contribuir para aumento da sustentabilidade na produção agrícola na região Amazônica. Objetivou-se neste estudo avaliar o potencial alelopático de plantas de cobertura, sobre a planta daninha vassourinha-de-botão (Spermacoce verticillata L.). Três níveis de palhada (1; 2,5 e 5 mg cm-2) de treze plantas de cobertura (Cajanus cajan, Canavalia ensiformis, Crotalaria juncea, C. ochroleuca, C. spectabilis, Mucuna aterrima, M. cinereum, Pennisetum glaucum, Sorghum bicolor, S. sudanense, Urochloa brizanha cv. Xaraés, U. brizantha cv. Piatã e U. ruziziensis) foram avaliados, sobre a germinação e o crescimento inicial da planta daninha e da alface. Dois experimentos foram instalados (planta daninha e alface) em esquema fatorial (plantas de cobertura x níveis de palhada) com tratamento adicional (testemunha sem palhada) em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições. As palhadas das plantas de cobertura inibiram a germinação e o crescimento inicial das plantas alvo. Os maiores níveis de palhada promoveram reduções de 44,0 e 78,8% no comprimento da radícula em relação à menor dose (1 mg cm-2), para a alface e para a vassourinha-de-botão, respectivamente. A maior sensibilidade aos aleloquímicos foi observada sobre a radícula. Os maiores efeitos supressivos na germinação da planta daninha foram promovidos pelo Cajanus cajan, Urochloa brizanha cv. Xaraés, Mucuna cinereum, M. aterrima, Canavalia ensiformis, Crotalaria juncea, C. spectabilis e U. ruziziensis. A utilização de plantas de cobertura em área de cultivo sob plantio direto representa uma prática de manejo integrado no controle da Spermacoce verticillata.

Cowpea is a source of protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Its importance for the North, Northeast and Center-West regions is related to economic and social aspects, as it is an important food for low income populations, meeting their nutritional needs. This study was carried out in Manaus, Amazonas, under greenhouse conditions, with the objective of evaluating the effect of different dead coverages on the agronomic characteristics of cowpea cultivars. The design was completely randomized in a 4x4 factorial arrangement. The treatments applied were four cultivars of cowpea (BRS Caldeir??o, BRS Tumucumaque, BRS Guariba and BRS Tracuateua) and three cover crop species (Brachiaria decumbens, Brachiaria ruziziensis and Mucuna pruriens) and another control treatment, without soil cover, totaling 16 treatments, with four replicates and two plants per experimental unit. The data were submitted to analysis of variance, and the means, compared by the Scott-Knott test, at 5% probability. The following characteristics were evaluated: number of pods per plant, pod length, number of grains per pod, weight of dry shoot mass, and yield. BRS Tumucumaque presented higher pod length. BRS Caldeir??o stood out with the best results for number of pods per plant and also, together with BRS Guariba, the highest number of beans per pod. The cultivars with the highest dry weight of shoot were BRS Caldeir??o, BRS Tumucumaque and BRS Guariba. The highest grain yields were recorded for BRS Caldeir??o and BRS Guariba (977.32 kg ha-1, 952.73 kg ha-1), respectively. Early fertilizer nitrogen (N) application on cover crops or their residues during the off-season is a practice adopted in Brazil subtropical conditions under no-tillage corn (Zea mays L.) systems. However, the effect of early N application on yield, plant N content, and N recovery efficiency (NRE) for corn is not yet well documented. Five fertilizer N timings in an oat-corn system were evaluated in two studies utilizing an isotopic-labeled N determination, 15N isotope. The N fertilization timings were: (i) oat tillering, (ii) 15 days before corn planting time, over the oat residues, (iii) at corn planting time, (iv) in-season at the three-leaf growth stage (V3), and (v) in-season split application at V3 and six-leaf (V6) growth stages. Based on the statistical analysis, the N fertilization timings were separated into three groups: 1) N-OATS, designated to N applied at oat; 2) N-PLANT, referred to pre-plant and planting N applications; and 3) N-CORN, designated to in-season corn N applications. Corn yield was not affected by the N fertilization timing. However, the N-CORN N fertilization timings enhanced NRE by 17% and 35% and final N recovery system (plant plus soil) by 16% and 24% all relative to N-OATS and N-PLANT groups, respectively. Overall, N-OATS resulted in the largest N derived from fertilizer (NDFF) amount in the deeper soil layer, in overall a delta of 10 kg N ha-1 relative to the rest of the groups. Notwithstanding corn yield was not affected, early N fertilization under subtropical conditions is not a viable option since NRE was diminished and the non-recovery N increased relative to the in-season N applications. Soybean is the major crop in the Brazilian Cerrado region. Tocantins state has been increasing soybean production mostly into degraded pasture. However, cover crops such as forages crops are important to implement in regional soybean agricultural systems to increase systems resilience due to climate variability. There is a lack of information regarding to agronomic performance of soybean intercropped with cover crops under no-tillage. The experimental design was randomized complete blocks with four replications in factorial 7 × 2. Seven soybean cultivation systems were tested: 1) soybean intercropped with Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu; 2) soybean intercropped with Urochloa ruziziensis; 3) soybean intercropped with Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça; 4) soybean intercropped with Panicum infestans cv. Massai; 5) soybean intercropped with Pennisetum americanum; 6) soybean followed by Pennisetum americanum; and 7) soybean and fallow. Two soil acidity and amelioration were tested: 1) with lime and gypsum application; 2) without lime and gypsum application. Soybean grain yield, plant height and number of pods per plant were different. Soybean grain yield were higher with lime ad gypsum application. The highest soybean plants height were observed in the treatments where lime and gypsum were applied, and with soybean intercropped with P. maximun and Millet. Soybean number of pods was positively affected P. infestans intercropped with soybean. There was no significant difference among treatments for mass per 100 seeds. Cover crops can provide changes in soil chemical and physical properties, which could allow a sustainable development of soybean and upland rice rotation in Brazilian Cerrado. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of cover crops (cultivated in the offseason) in the soybean-upland rice rotation (cultivated in the summer season) on the soil chemical and physical properties, yield components and grain yield of the cash crops. The experimental design was a randomized block design in factorial scheme 4 × 2 with six replications. Treatments were composed by four cover crops: fallow, millet (Pennisetum glaucum) + Crotalaria ochroleuca, millet + pigeon pea (Cajanus cajans), and millet + pigeon pea + Urochola ruziziensis in the offseason with one or two cycles of cover crops, with rice (Oryza sativa) or soybean (Glycine max) in the summer season. Cover crops alone provided no changes in soil chemical properties. However, the rotation cover crops / cash crops / cover crops / cash crops reduced pH, Al and H + Al and increased Ca, Mg, K and Fe contents in the soil. The cover crops millet + pigeon pea and millet + pigeon pea + U. ruziziensis improved soil physical properties in relation to fallow, especially in the 0?0.10 m soil layer. In spite of the improvement of the soil physical properties after two years of rotation with cover crops and cash crops, the soil physical quality was still below the recommended level, showing values of macroporosity, S index and soil aeration capacity lower than 0.10 m3/m3, 0.035 and 0.34, respectively. Upland rice production was higher under mixtures of cover crops than under fallow, mainly because of soil physical changes done by these mixtures of cover crops. Soybean grain yield was similar under all cover crops tested, but was higher after the rotation cover crops / upland rice / cover crops than after only one cycle of cover crops. Besides providing benefits to the environment such as soil protection, release of nutrients, soil moisture maintenance, and weed control, cover crops can increase food production for grain production. The aim of this study was to evaluate the production of biomass and grain cover crops (and its respective effects on soil chemical and physical attributes), yield components, and grain yield of rice in Mozambique. The study was conducted in two sites located in the province of Cabo Delgado, in Mozambique. The experimental design was a randomized block in a 2 × 6 factorial, with four repetitions. Treatments were carried out in two locations (Cuaia and Nambaua) with six cover crops: Millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.); namarra bean (Lablab purpureus (L.) Sweet), velvet beans (Mucuna pruriens L.), oloco beans (Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.), and fallow. Cover crops provided similar changes in chemical and physical properties of the soil. Lablab purpureus, Vigna unguiculata, and Mucuna pruriens produced the highest dry matter biomass. Vigna unguiculada produced the highest amount of grains. Rice grain yields were similar under all cover crops and higher in Cuaia than Nambaua. RESUMO As plantas de cobertura, além de proporcionar benefícios ao ambiente como a proteção do solo, liberação de nutrientes, manutenção da umidade do solo e controle de plantas daninhas, pode servir para aumentar a produção de alimentos pela sua própria produção de grãos. O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar a produção de biomassa seca e de grãos de espécies de plantas de cobertura e seu respectivo efeito nos atributos químicos e físicos do solo, componentes de produção e produtividade de arroz em Moçambique. O trabalho foi desenvolvido em dois locais na Província de Cabo Delgado, em Moçambique. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso no esquema fatorial 2 x 6, com 4 repetições. Os tratamentos foram compostos pelas 2 localidades (Cuaia e Nambaua) e 6 coberturas vegetais: Milheto (Pennisetum glaucum L.); Lablabe (Lablab purpureus (L.) Sweet), mucuna (Mucuna pruriens L.), feijão oloco (Vigna radiata (L) R. Wilczek), feijão caupi (Vigna unguiculata L.) e pousio. As plantas de cobertura proporcionaram alterações semelhantes nas propriedades químicas e físicas do solo. Lablab purpureus, Vigna unguiculata e Mucuna pruriens produziram a maior quantidade de biomassa seca. Vigna unguiculata foi a cultura de cobertura que produziu a maior quantidade de grãos. A produtividade de grãos do arroz foi semelhante em todas as culturas de cobertura e maior em Cuaia que Nambaua.

RESUMOEste trabalho objetivou determinar o impacto de sistemas silviagrícolas na qualidade física de um Latossolo Vermelho ácrico. Em 2012 foram coletadas amostras de solo na camada de 0-0,10 m, nas linhas de árvores e entre essas linhas, em dois sistemas silviagrícolas conduzidos em semeadura direta, sendo um voltado para a segurança alimentar e outro para produção de energia, implantados em 2009, em Santo Antônio de Goiás, GO. Foram determinados a densidade do solo, macroporosidade, porosidade total, índice S, diâmetro dos agregados, capacidade de água disponível e capacidade de aeração, os quais foram comparados com valores considerados, na literatura, como não limitantes à produtividade. Após três anos de implantação dos sistemas silviagrícolas o solo apresentou, nas linhas, melhor qualidade física que entre as linhas de árvores. A densidade do solo, macroporosidade, porosidade total, índice S e capacidade de aeração do solo foram os principais responsáveis por discriminarem os tratamentos. De maneira geral, as combinações de culturas de cobertura e cultura principal que envolveram poáceas resultaram em pior qualidade física do solo.

Resumo:O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a produção de matéria seca e o controle de plantas daninhas por espécies de leguminosas consorciadas com cana-de-açúcar, em cultivo orgânico. As espécies leguminosas Arachis pintoi, Cajanus cajan, Calopogonium mucunoides, Crotalaria anagyroides, Crotalaria juncea e Stylosanthes 'Campo Grande' foram semeadas em novembro de 2012, nas entrelinhas da cana-de-açúcar. O delineamento experimental em blocos ao acaso foi utilizado com quatro repetições e dois controles - um tratamento capinado e outro sem capinar. A massa de matéria seca das leguminosas foi avaliada aos 142 dias após a semeadura (DAS), e a massa de matéria seca de plantas daninhas, aos 29, 85 e 142 DAS. A massa de matéria seca de plantas daninhas foi inferior à da testemunha em todas as épocas amostradas. A produção de massa de matéria seca das leguminosas no consórcio foi baixa. As espécies Crotalaria juncea, Cajanus cajan e Calopogonium mucunoides produziram massa de matéria seca superior à das espécies Arachis pintoi e Stylosanthes 'Campo Grande'. A produtividade de colmos da cana-de-açúcar não foi afetada pelo consórcio. O consórcio entre cana-de-açúcar orgânica e leguminosas com semeadura tardia, para adubação verde, é eficiente no controle de plantas daninhas. Abstract:The objective of this work was to evaluate dry matter production and weed control by intercropped legumes with sugarcane, in organic cropping. The legume species Arachis pintoi, Cajanus cajan, Calopogonium mucunoides, Crotalaria anagyroides, Crotalaria juncea, and Stylosanthes 'Campo Grande' were sown on November 2012 in the inter-rows of sugarcane. A randomized complete block experimental design was used with four replicates and two controls - a weeded treatment and an unweeded one. Legume dry matter was evaluated 142 days after sowing (DAS), and the weed dry matter, at 29, 85, and 142 DAS. Weed dry matter was lower than that of the control in all sampling periods. The production of legume dry matter was low in intercropping. The species Crotalaria juncea, Cajanus cajan, and Calopogonium mucunoides produced higher dry matter than the species Arachis pintoi and Stylosanthes 'Campo Grande'. Stalk yield of sugarcane was not affected by intercropping. The intercropping of organic sugarcane and legumes in late sowing, for green manure, is efficient for weed control.

As a result of soil management systems, like the conventional tillage system (CTS) versus the no-tillage system (NTS) for vegetable crops, modifications in soil properties occur, which change, for example, the rates of soil aggregation and the content of total organic carbon (TOC). The aim of this study was to quantify the TOC contents and evaluate the rates of soil aggregation and the distribution of aggregates by diameter classes in a soil planted to onion in NTS and CTS and compare them to an adjacent forest area in Ituporanga, Santa Catarina, Brazil. We evaluated the following treatments, which consisted of planting cover crops, alone and intercropped, in NTS: spontaneous vegetation (SV); 100 % oats; 100 % rye; 100 % wild radish; intercropping of wild radish (14 %) and rye (86 %); and intercropping of wild radish (14 %) and oats (86 %). We also evaluated an onion-growing area under CTS for +/- 37 years, and a forest area (secondary forest for +/- 30 years), both adjacent to the experimental area. In September 2013, five years after setting up treatments with cover crops, undisturbed soil samples were collected from the 0-5, 5-10, and 10-20 cm soil layers, and aggregates were separated to assess stability by the wet method. Os tratamentos constituíram-se da semeadura de plantas de cobertura, solteiras e consorciadas, em SPDH: vegetação espontânea (VE); 100 % aveia; 100 % centeio; 100 % nabo-forrageiro; consórcio de nabo-forrageiro (14 %) e centeio (86 %); e consórcio de nabo-forrageiro (14 %) e aveia (86 %). Adicionalmente, foram avaliadas uma área de cultivo de cebola em SPC por ±37 anos e uma área de mata (floresta secundária; ±30 anos), ambas adjacentes ao experimento. Em setembro de 2013, cinco anos após a implantação dos tratamentos com plantas de cobertura, foram coletadas amostras indeformadas do solo nas camadas de 0-5, 5-10 e 10-20 cm e separados os agregados para avaliar a estabilidade via úmida. Assim, um estudo foi realizado para avaliar as alterações nas propriedades químicas do solo causadas pelas culturas de cobertura em sistema de plantio direto. O experimento de campo consistiu na rotação das seguintes culturas: plantas de cobertura/ arroz/ plantas de cobertura/ arroz. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados com três repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram de quatro espécies de plantas de cobertura (Brachiaria brizantha(Hochst. ex A. Rich.) Stapf. cv. Marandu, Brachiaria ruziziensis R. Germ. and C.M. Evrard, Panicum maximum Jacq. cv. Colonião and Pennisetum glaucum(L.) R. Br. cv. BN-2) e pousio (tratamento controle). As amostras foram coletadas no início da safra de verão, em outubro de 2007, 2008 e 2009, a 0-5 cm de profundidade. O uso de plantas de cobertura proporcionou aumento significativo na concentração de nutrientes, matéria orgânica do solo, capacidade de troca catiônica e saturação por bases. A fertilidade do solo melhorou do primeiro para o segundo ano com o cultivo de plantas de cobertura. O solo sob as plantas de cobertura P. glaucum, B. ruziziensis e B. brizantha apresentou maior fertilidade do que a área mantida sob pousio. The use of cover crops in no-tillage systems (NTS) can significantly improve the soil's fertility. Thus, a study was performed to evaluate changes in chemical properties of soil caused by cover crops in a no-tillage system. The field experiment consisted of the following crop rotation: cover crops/rice/cover crops/rice. The experimental design was in randomized blocks with three replications. Treatments consisted of four cover crops (Brachiaria brizantha(Hochst. ex A. Rich.) Stapf. cv. Marandu, Brachiaria ruziziensis R. Germ. and C.M. Evrard, Panicum maximum Jacq. cv. Colonião, and Pennisetum glaucum(L.) R. Br. cv. BN-2) and fallow (control treatment). The present study evaluated the effects of cover crops (Pennisetum glaucum, Crotalaria spectabilis and Urochloa ruziziensis) associated with the application of herbicides {glyphosate; (glyphosate + haloxyfop-R); (glyphosate + fluazifop-p-butyl); (glyphosate + imazethapyr) and (glyphosate + imazaquin)} in soybean desiccation management for volunteer RR® corn control. The experiment was conducted under field conditions at Sinop-MT, during the 2013/2014 crop season, in a randomized complete blocks design with factorial scheme and four replications. The following parameter were evaluated: dry matter of cover crops and ground coverage rate, control of volunteer RR® corn present at the time of desiccation, dry matter, height and intoxication level on soybean plants caused by herbicides at 7, 14 and 28 days after emergence (DAE), control of volunteer RR® corn derived from emergence fluxes subsequent to desiccation management and soybean yield. The joint application of (glyphosate + haloxyfop-R) provided the best level of volunteer RR® corn control present at the time of desiccation. Satisfactory control (80%) of volunteer corn was obtained with the application of (glyphosate + imazethapyr). This treatment displayed an additional residual effect of imazethapyr, which efficiently controled volunteer RR® corn derived from fluxes subsequent to desiccation management, especially in treatments performed under U. ruziziensis straw. None of the herbicides used in desiccation management caused any significant effect on dry matter, height and phytotoxicity of soybean plants at 7, 14 and 28 DAE nor on grain yield. RESUMO - Avaliaram-se nesta pesquisa os efeitos de plantas de cobertura (Pennisetum glaucum, Urochloa ruziziensis e Crotalaria spectabilis) associadas à aplicação de herbicidas {glyphosate; (glyphosate+haloxyfop-R), (glyphosate+fluazifop-p-butil), (glyphosate+imazethapyr) e (glyphosate+imazaquin)} no manejo de dessecação na cultura da soja, visando o controle do milho RR® voluntário. O experimento foi conduzido em campo no município de Sinop-MT, na safra 2013/2014, no delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial, com quatro repetições. Foram avaliados: matéria seca das plantas de cobertura e cobertura do solo, controle do milho RR® voluntário presente no momento da dessecação, matéria seca, altura e intoxicação das plantas de soja pelos herbicidas aos 7, 14 e 28 dias após a emergência (DAE), controle do milho RR® voluntário oriundo de fluxos de emergência posterior ao manejo de dessecação e produtividade da soja. A aplicação conjunta de (glyphosate+haloxyfop-R) proporcionou o melhor nível de controle do milho RR® voluntário presente no momento da dessecação. Controle satisfatório (80%) do milho voluntário foi obtido com a aplicação de (glyphosate+imazethapyr). Este tratamento teve como adicional o efeito residual do imazethapyr, que controlou de maneira eficiente o milho RR® voluntário oriundo de fluxo posterior ao manejo de dessecação, principalmente nos tratamentos cultivados sob palhada de U. ruziziensis. Não houve efeito significativo dos herbicidas utilizados no manejo de dessecação na matéria seca, altura e fitotoxicidade das plantas de soja aos 7, 14 e 28 DAE e na produtividade de grãos.

An important point in no-tillage system is the time between cover crop glyphosate desiccation and rice sowing. This study aimed to verify the effect of Brachiaria ruziziensis management time before rice sowing on rice yield and its components. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions and consisted of four types of B. ruziziensis management: with Brachiaria and with herbicide (WBWH), without Brachiaria shoots and with herbicide (NBWH), without Brachiaria shoots and without herbicide (NBNH), and with Brachiaria and without herbicide (WBNH), at four times: 30, 20, 10, and 0 days, preceding the rice sowing. The amount of B. ruziziensis dry matter increased as the management was done closer to the rice sowing date. The WBWH and WBNH managements (this one causes the lowest rice grain yield) must be done 30 days before rice sowing; while NBWH management must be done ten or more days before rice sowing. On the other hand, NBNH management (this one favors the best rice grain yield) can be done until rice sowing day. Despite some reduction in rice yield caused by the B. ruziziensis management, when it was done at the proper time the rice grain yield was similar to the control (without Brachiaria sowing and without herbicide application). No sistema de plantio direto é importante o tempo entre a dessecação da cobertura com glifosato e a semeadura do arroz. Este estudo objetivou verificar o efeito da época de manejo da Brachiaria ruziziensis antes da semeadura do arroz na produtividade do arroz e seus componentes de produção. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, com quatro tipos de manejo da B. ruziziensis: com Brachiaria e com herbicida (CBCH), sem a parte aérea da Brachiaria e com herbicida (SBCH), com Brachiaria e sem herbicida (CBSH) e sem a parte aérea da Brachiaria e sem herbicida (SBSH), em quatro épocas: 30, 20, 10 e 0 dias anteriores à semeadura do arroz. A matéria seca de B. ruziziensis aumentou à medida que o manejo foi realizado próximo à semeadura do arroz. Os manejos CBCH e CBSH (este proporcionou a menor produtividade de arroz) devem ser feitos 30 dias antes da semeadura do arroz; já o manejo SBCH deve ser feito dez ou mais dias antes da semeadura. O manejo SBSH, que proporcionou a maior produtividade de arroz, pode ser feito até o dia da semeadura do arroz. Apesar de alguma redução na produtividade causada pelo manejo da B. ruziziensis, quando ele foi feito no momento adequado a produtividade do arroz foi semelhante ao controle (sem semeadura da Brachiaria e sem herbicida).

O figo (Ficus carica L.) é uma espécie frutífera com grande expansão mundial, pois é considerada uma espécie de clima temperado, mas que apresenta boa adaptação a uma grande diversidade de climas e solos. Dentre os problemas fitossanitários ocorrentes na ficicultura, o de maior importância são os nematoides. O objetivo do presente estudo é avaliar a influência da aplicação de diferentes doses de composto orgânico e da consorciação com Crotalaria spectabilis sobre a densidade populacional de nematoides e a produtividade de figueira. O experimento foi conduzido no pomar já instalado, a partir de setembro do ano de 2015 até setembro de 2016. As plantas estavam dispostas em um espaçamento de 4 m entrelinhas e 2 m entre plantas. Os tratamentos foram cinco doses de composto orgânico, tendo elas como referência a quantidade recomendada de nitrogênio para a cultura da figueira, combinadas com a presença ou a ausência de Crotalaria spectabilis em consórcio. Foram identificados cinco espécies de fitonematoides no pomar sendo, Meloidogyne incognita, Pratylenchus sp., Helicotylenchus sp., Criconemoide sp. e Rotylenchulus sp.. M. incognita apresentou-se em maiores densidades populacionais e com dominância acima de 90% nas três épocas de avaliação. Esta espécie não foi afetada pelas doses de composto orgânico nem pelo uso de C. spectabilis. A produtividade das figueiras aumentou com o aumento da dose de composto orgânico aplicado. The fig (Ficus carica L.) is a fruitful species with great worldwide expansion, since it is considered a species of temperate climate, but that presents / displays good adaptation to a great diversity of climates and solos. Among the phytosanitary problems occurring in ficiculture, nematodes are the most important. The objective of the present study is to evaluate the influence of the application of different doses of organic compost and the intercropping with Crotalaria spectabilis on nematode population density and fig yield. The experiment was conducted in the orchard already installed, from September of the year 2015 to September 2016. The plants were arranged in a spacing of 4 m between rows and 2 m between plants. The treatments were five doses of organic compound, having as reference the recommended amount of nitrogen for the fig tree crop, combined with the presence or absence of Crotalaria spectabilis in a consortium. Five phytoematoid species were identified in the orchard, being Meloidogyne incognita, Pratylenchus sp., Helicotylenchus sp., Criconemoide sp. and Rotylenchulus sp .. M. incognita was present in higher population densities and with dominance over 90% in the three evaluation periods. This species was not affected by the doses of organic compound nor by the use of C. spectabilis. The productivity of the fig trees increased with the increase of the dose of applied organic compound. Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq The objective of this research was to adjust non-linear models, Gompertz and Logistic, in the description of morphological and productive traits of sunn hemp in two sowing season, October the 22th 2014 and December the 3th 2014. Two uniformity were performed. The seeds were between rows 0.5m with rows and density of 20 plants per row meter of floor area of 52m x 50m (2.600m2). The evaluations began on October the 29th 2014 and December the 16th 2014, totaling 94 and 76 evaluation days for seasons 1 and 2, respectively. After the emergence of the seeds of sunn hemp, for season 1 from 7 days after sowing, and from 2 to 13 days after sowing, on each day, they were collected randomly four plants. The traits: plant height (PH), number of leaves (NL), stem diameter (SD), root length (RL), fresh matter leaf (FML), fresh matter stem (FMS), fresh matter root (FMR), fresh matter shoot (FMSH), the fresh matter total (FMT), mass of dry matter leaf (DML), dry matter stem (DMS), dry matter root (DMR), dry matter shoot (DMSH), and total dry matter (DMT). The residual assumptions of the characters studied were verified by test Shapiro-Wilk, test Breusch-Pagan and test Durbin-Watson. To model was used Gompertz equation: and the Logistic model was used the equation: . The inflection point (pi), maximum acceleration point (pam), maximum deceleration point (pdm) and asymptotic deceleration point (pda) for the Gompertz and Logistic models were calculated. For both models the confidence interval (CI) was calculated. The quality setting of the Gompertz and Logistic models was verified by the determination coefficient (R²), the Akaike information criteria(AIC), residual standard deviation (RSD), mean absolute deviation (MAD), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and mean prediction error (MPE). The calculations were performed with the help of SOLVER of Microsoft Office Excel® application and software statistic R. The Gompertz model when compared between the sowing dates by means of the CI of the parameters, for the morphological and 9 productive characters differ. Same result was found for the Logistic model. The Gompertz and Logistic models are suitable for adjusting the morphological and productive traits of the sunn hemp. O objetivo deste trabalho foi ajustar os modelos não lineares, Gompertz e Logístico, na descrição dos caracteres morfológicos e produtivos de crotalária juncea em duas épocas de semeadura, 22/10/2014 e 03/12/2014. Foram realizados dois ensaios de uniformidade. A semeadura foi em fileiras com 0,5m entre fileiras e com densidade de 20 plantas por metro de fileira em área útil de 52m x 50m (2.600m2). O início das avaliações foi em 29/10/2014 e 16/12/2014, totalizando 94 e 76 dias de avaliação para as épocas 1 e 2, respectivamente. Após a emergência das plântulas de crotalária juncea, para a época 1 a partir dos 7 dias após a semeadura, e para época 2 a partir dos 13 dias após a semeadura, em cada dia, foram coletadas, aleatoriamente, quatro plantas. Foram verificados os pressupostos dos resíduos dos caracteres, por meio dos seguintes testes: teste de Shapiro-Wilk, teste de Breusch-Pagan e teste de Durbin-Watson. Para o modelo de Gompertz foi utilizada a equação:, e para o modelo Logístico foi utilizada a equação. Também foi calculado o ponto de inflexão (pi), ponto de aceleração máxima (pam), ponto de desaceleração máxima (pdm) e ponto de desaceleração assintótica (p1) para os modelos Gompertz e Logístico. Para ambos os modelos, realizou-se o cálculo do intervalo de confiança (IC) para os parâmetros a, b e c. A qualidade do ajuste dos modelos de Gompertz e Logístico foi verificada pelo coeficiente de determinação (R²), o critério de informação de Akaike (AIC), desvio padrão residual (DPR), desvio médio absoluto (DMA), erro percentual médio absoluto (MAPE) e erro de predição médio (EPM). Os cálculos foram realizados com o auxílio do aplicativo SOLVER do Microsoft Office Excel® e o software estatístico R. O modelo de Gompertz quando comparado entre as épocas de semeadura por meio do IC dos parâmetros, para os caracteres morfológicos e produtivos diferem. Mesmo resultado foi encontrado para o modelo Logístico. Os modelos de Gompertz e Logístico são adequados para o ajuste dos caracteres morfológicos e produtivos para a cultura de crotalária juncea.

In flood plains, cover crops are able to alter soil properties and significantly affect rice nutrition and yield. The aims of this study were to determine soil properties, plant nutrition, and yield of tropical rice cultivated on flood plains after cover crop cultivation with conventional tillage (CT) and no-tillage system (NTS) at low and high nitrogen (N) fertilization levels. The experimental design was a randomized block in a split-split-plot scheme with four replications. In the main plots were cover crops [sunhemp (Crotalaria juncea and C. spectabilis), velvet bean (Mucuna aterrima), jackbean (Canavalia ensiformis), pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan), Japanese radish (Raphanus sativus), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata)] and a fallow field. In the subplots were the tillage systems (CT or NTS). The nitrogen fertilization levels in the sub-subplots were (10 kg N ha-1 and 45 kg N ha-1). All cover crops except Japanese radish significantly increased mineral soil nitrogen and nitrate concentrations. Sunhemp, velvet bean, and cowpea significantly increased soil ammonium content. The NTS provides higher mineral nitrogen and ammonium content than that by CT. Overall, cover crops provided higher levels of nutrients to rice plants in NTS than in CT. Cover crops provide greater yield than fallow treatments. Rice yield was higher in NTS than in CT, and greater at a higher rather than lower nitrogen fertilization level.

Small-scale crop production in many parts of Tanzania is constrained by many problems among which soil fertility degradation is a major problem. Over 80% of cassava (Manihot esculenta) production in Tanzania is done by the small-scale farmers who continuously cultivate their fields, but use limited inputs to restore depleted plant nutrients. The objective of this study was to examine the best legume species that could be incorporated in cassava (Manihot esculenta) production systems under farmers? conditions and result in increase in soil fertility and crop yields. Mucuna pruriens and Canavalia ensiformis were either incorporated with cassava (Manihot esculenta) or planted as sole crop in rotation with cassava. Mucuna pruriens and Canavalia ensiformis were found to produce almost similar amount of biomass. The two legumes, however, produced higher biomass in rotation than intercropping system. The amount of biomass produced by Mucuna pruriens and Canavalia ensiformis in rotation system was 6.28 t.ha-1 and 5.31 t.ha-1, respectively. The Mucuna use represents an input of nitrogen into the soil which simulates a saving cost of 181.42 and 141.96 US$ ha-1. In the first year, cassava root yields were significantly increased (p < 0.05) over control (continuous sole cassava) (1.44 t.ha-1) by the use of intercropping of cassava (Manihot esculenta) with Mucuna pruriens (2.41 t.ha-1) and or Canavalia ensiformis (2.25 t.ha-1). Intercropping and rotation of cassava with legumes increase cassava yield and represent a sustainable alternative to reduce the farms? dependence on external inputs and to enhance inherent soil fertility. The common bean requires high levels of nitrogen (N) to achieve high productivity, which can be supplied, at least partially, by the biological nitrogen fixation (BFN). Two field experiments were carried out in the winter season of 2015 aiming to evaluate the effects of different cover crops, desiccation times and the agronomic performance of the common bean inoculated with rhizobia. The experiments were assembled in a randomized block design with four replications, in a factorial split-plot arrangement with two additional treatments (5x4x2+2). The factors were composed of five cover crops, four desiccation times, two seed inoculation treatments and two additional controls (TN = 90 Kg N ha-1 and T0 = without N and without inoculation). The variables analyzed in the cover crops were dry mass (DM) and total nitrogen (Total-N). With the common bean, the chlorophyll content (CC), the number of nodules (NN), the nodule dry weight (NDW), the shoot dry weight (SDW), the root dry weight (RDW) and the grain yield (GY) were evaluated. The results showed that the agronomic performance of the common bean was not affected by the desiccation times of the cover crops, although the amount of Total-N accumulated by cover crops was influenced by sowing times. Inoculation of the common bean promoted an increase in the NN, NDW, CC and SDW. Estudos sobre plantas de cobertura de solo, em areas de milho para silagem, sao raros no Brasil e aqueles que abordam o efeito dessas plantas na nutricao do milho sao ainda mais escassos. Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito de diferentes plantas de cobertura na produtividade de massa seca (MS) e no acumulo de macronutrientes na parte aerea da planta de milho (espigas, folhas, colmos). O trabalho foi realizado na Fazenda Santo Antonio, em Matozinhos, MG. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repeticoes e nove tratamentos, sendo oito especies de cobertura – nabo forrageiro ( Raphanus sativus ), milheto ( Pennisetum americanum ), Brachiaria ruzziziensis , B. decumbens , Crotalarea juncea , tremoco ( Lupinus albus ), aveia preta ( Avena strigosa ) e girassol ( Helianthus annuus ) - e uma area de pousio. A produtividade de MS da parte aerea do milho nao foi modificada pelas plantas de cobertura. As concentracoes dos macronutrientes nas plantas de milho nao variaram devido aos tratamentos. Por sua vez, as quantidades totais de Ca e S nas plantas de milho foram modificadas. As quantidades acumuladas de macronutrientes nas espigas tambem nao foram afetadas pelos tratamentos, com excecao das quantidades de P e Ca nas folhas e no colmo.

Deforestation is responsible for a substantial fraction of global carbon emissions and changes in surface energy budgets that affect climate. Deforestation losses include wildlife and human habitat, and myriad forest products on which rural and urban societies depend for food, fiber, fuel, fresh water, medicine, and recreation. Ecosystem services gained in the transition from forests to pasture and croplands, however, are often ignored in assessments of the impact of land cover change. The role of converted lands in tropical areas in terms of carbon uptake and storage is largely unknown. Pastures represent the fastest-growing form of converted land use in the tropics, even in some areas of rapid urban expansion. Tree biomass stored in these areas spans a broad range, depending on tree cover. Trees in pasture increase carbon storage, provide shade for cattle, and increase productivity of forage material. As a result, increasing fractional tree cover can provide benefits land managers as well as important ecosystem services such as reducing conversion pressure on forests adjacent to pastures. This study presents an estimation of fractional tree cover in pasture in a dynamic region on the verge of large-scale land use change. An appropriate sampling interval is established for similar studies, one that balances the need for independent samples of sufficient number to characterize a pasture in terms of fractional tree cover. This information represents a useful policy tool for government organizations and NGOs interested in encouraging ecosystem services on converted lands. Using high spatial resolution Rio Branco, Brazil. A semivariogram and devolving spatial resolution are employed to determine the coarsest sampling interval that may be used, minimizing effects of spatial autocorrelation. The coarsest sampling interval that minimizes spatial dependence was about 22 m. The area-weighted fractional tree cover for the study area was 1.85 %, corrected for a slight bias associated with the coarser sampling resolution. The pastures sampled for fractional tree cover were divided between ?high? and ?low? tree cover, which may be the result of intentional incorporation of arboreal species in pasture. Further research involving those ranchers that have a higher fractional tree cover may indicate ways to promote the practice on a broader scale in the region. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o efeito das plantas de cobertura e da fonte de N nas bactérias nitrificantes e amonificantes do solo, bem como nos teores de nitrato e amônio. O experimento foi conduzido em um latossolo vermelho distrófico sobre sistema plantio direto (SPD) por seis anos. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, no esquema de parcelas subdivididas, com quatro repetições. As parcelas foram constituídas por seis espécies de plantas de cobertura do solo (Brachiaria brizantha, Brachiaria decumbens, Brachiaria humidicola, Brachiaria ruziziensis, Pennisetum americanum e Crotalaria spectabilis) e as subparcelas pelo controle e três fontes de N (1- controle, sem aplicação de N, 2- nitrato de cálcio, 3- sulfato de amônio e 4-sulfato de amônio + dicianodiamida (DCD)) aplicadas imediatamente após a emergência do arroz na dose de 40 kg ha-1 de N. Foram avaliadas a atividade das bactérias e os teores de nitrato e amônio no solo aos 15 DAE. As plantas de cobertura milheto (Pennisetum americanum), crotalaria (Crotalaria spectabilis); Brachiaria brizantha, B. decumbens; e B. humidicola proporcionaram os maiores teores de amônio no solo; O uso do inibidor de nitrificação (dicianodiamida-DCD) inibiu parte das bactérias nitrificantes e proporcionou os maiores teores de amônio no solo. A atividade das bactérias amonificantes e nitrificantes foi maior nas parcelas cultivadas com braquiárias. Plantas de cobertura aliada ao uso de DCD pode ser uma estratégia para aumentar os teores de amônio do solo cultivado sobre SPD.

Better understanding of the use of cover crops at no-tillage systems in upland rice crop could contribute to increase grain production in this environment and allow moving toward sustainable agriculture. The objective of this research was to determine the effect of pearl millet intercropped with other cover crops on N mineral forms and urease activity in the soil, nitrate reductase enzyme activity in the leaves and yield components and grain yield of upland rice. The experiment was performed in the year 2012/2013 in two locations, in Haplorthox soil under no-tillage system. The experimental design was a complete randomized block with eight replications. The treatments consisted of four types of cover crop [(1) Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) - control; (2) Pearl millet + Crotalaria spectabilis; (3) Pearl millet + Brachiaria ruziziensis; (4) Pearl millet + C. spectabilis + B. ruziziensis]. The mixture of cover crops pearl millet + C. spectabilis allowed the highest levels of nitrate in the soil. The cover crops pearl millet, pearl millet + C. spectabilis, pearl millet + Brachiaria ruziziensis, and pearl millet + C. spectabilis + Brachiaria ruziziensis provided similar results for ammonium content and urease activity in the soil, nitrate reductase activity in leaves, yield components and grain yield of upland rice grown under no-tillage. Our results allow inferring that the use of pearl millet, as cover crop, alone or intercropped with B. ruziziensis or C. spectabilis is a management practice option to provide high rice grain yield.
