- Abstract
Achieving high-performance conditions and maximizing the fusion yield of plasma discharges have been one of the main goals of recent Joint European Torus (JET) campaigns in preparation for its second deuterium-tritium (D-T) campaign. The simulations shown in this work delve into the role of external heating using neutral beam injection (NBI) and radio-frequency waves in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) in order to optimise high fusion performance in the JET tokamak. A baseline discharge with record neutron rate is used as a reference in order to perform a D-T prediction, which considers the NBI+RF synergy. In this work, our focus is on JET’s two main minority schemes, H and 3He. This study tackles the heating mechanisms by which these schemes reach high-performance conditions. The H scheme typically boosts the ICRF fusion enhancement through the second D harmonic heating, whereas 3He minority is characterised by its strong bulk ion heating. Both features are beneficial for increasing the fusion yield. Nevertheless, the minority concentration is a relevant parameter, which needs to be assessed to understand in which concentration ranges the benefits of each particular minority scheme are met. Therefore, the main objective of this work is to assess in which concentration range the ICRF fusion enhancement and bulk ion heating are optimal, for H and 3He, respectively. Under these conditions, our prediction suggests 3He concentration should stay above 1.2% and H should remain below 2.2%.

Wildfires approaching the Wildland-Industrial Interfaces can be a serious threat for industrial items located at the plant boundary. These items are typically storage tanks involving large amounts of hazardous substances. Ensuring their integrity is of paramount importance to prevent the wildfire spread inside the industrial plant, avoiding the occurrence of major accidents such as fires, explosions and toxic releases. A methodology for the evaluation of safety distances between tanks and vegetation for the protection from wildfire hazard was developed and applied to a case study. The outcomes provide useful information for an effective emergency response planning in the case of wildfire. Moreover, the results obtained rise concern about the appropriateness of clearance areas between the vegetation and industrial areas currently adopted.

Wildland Urban Interface, Wuildfire, Safety - Abstract
Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) fires are posing tremendous management challenges in terms of civil protection and fire mitigation. Many critical factors are contributing and increasing the risk at the WUI, such as the presence of all sorts of fuels whose hazard is poorly characterized and disregarded by residents, the existence of vulnerable elements in houses and industrial installations and the absence of standards that deal with the WUI problem at the homeowner/property scale. The WUIVIEW project aims at developing an innovative risk management tool that will help WUI communities to adapt in order to face the new generation of forest fires. This is being done by designing, setting up and testing a virtual workbench service for the performance-based analysis of fire environments in the surroundings of buildings at the WUI. In this framework, a methodological approach for the assessment of LPG domestic tanks vulnerability under fire exposure at the WUI has been developed. The present work provides a demonstration of such methodology through a realistic case study, together with an overview of the WUIVIEW project activities.

- Abstract
Trabajo presentado en la International Conference & Exposition Aquaculture Europe, celebrada en Funchal, Maderia (Portugal) del 04 al 07 de octubre de 2021., [Introduction]: Turbellarian flatworms are controverted organisms with changing taxonomical adscription. Most of these platyhelminths are terrestrial and aquatic free-living organisms, but also include symbiotic species, and few cases of parasitic ones associated to fish, crustaceans and molluscs. Here, we report an epizootic due to a rhabdocoelan infection in cultured red drum (Sciaenops ocellatum) in a sea-cage farm in a tropical area. We describe the morphological, histological and molecular approaches for its identification., [Methods]: Two subsequent outbreaks in 2018-2019 affected red drum in the first year after entering the farm (weight ranging from 12g to 180 g). Water temperature ranged from 23 to 29.5°C and salinity was 36 ‰. Different types of samples of fish presenting acute mortalities and clinical signs were taken. Fresh smears of gills were observed at light microscope on site. Necropsied gills were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin (NBF), processed routinely, embedded in Technovit7100-resin, sectioned at 1 µm and stained with Giemsa, PAS, and alcian blue-PAS. Some NBF-fixed specimens were dehydrated, cleared with dimethyl phthalate and stained with iron acetic carmine. Another sample set was stored in 70% ethanol for molecular identification. The ribosomal genes 18S and 28S were PCR-amplified (Giribet et al., 1996; Jovelin & Justine, 2001) and used concatenated to infer a phylogeny by Bayesian inference. Other representatives of Rhabdocoela present in GenBank were included in the analyses. Bacterial samples were taken for basic bacteriological analysis., [Results]: Prevalence of infection was 100 % in some stocks, and mortality ranged from 5% to 60%. Clinical signs included anaemia, weight loss, pale and necrotic gills with mucous masses, desquamation and erosion of the skin, and asphyxiation. Bacteriological results were variable, from negative to opportunistic bacteria or septicaemia, often accompanied by splenomegaly. Microscopical observation of gill scrapings of affected fish revealed ciliated turbellarians with eyespots. When gravid adults were mounted in seawater under a glass coverslip, active swimming eyed juvenile emerged. Worms, with characteristic anterior eyes, were visible under low magnification (Fig. 1). The morphometric study of fixed worms showed that adults were elongated, piriform with pointed posterior end (854-1403 × 356-589 µm) and a short anterior distal projection. Eyespots were separated. Pharynx was subconical and anterior. Testes and ovary were small and follicular. Some large specimens exhibited numerous completely developed juveniles occupying most of the body. Based on the body shape, pharynx arrangement and the presence of juveniles, the worms were tentatively assigned to the family Graffillidae. Histologically, worms were placed in shallow epithelial tunnels on secondary and primary lamella, and even on the cartilages of gill arches, and some small specimens were found free among gill filaments (Fig.1). The infection caused destruction of the normal gill architecture with minor histopathological reaction, lacking signs of necrosis or inflammation. Among the epithelial host cells forming the tunnel walls, little or no focal hyperplasia was observed. The primary direct effect of the turbellarian gill infection was the loss of respiratory function by impairment of gas exchange in parasitized lamella. In some sections, long filamentous bacteria covered the tissue and worm surface, suggesting secondary bacterial infections involved in the epizootic case. The worms enclosed within epithelial tunnels appeared to be covered by a sheath of cellular and mucous material. The molecular study placed the parasite within the Order Rhabdocoela, Suborder Dalytyphloplanida and Infraorder Neodalyellida. However, it was highly divergent from all the deposited sequences of the group, indicating that it may belong to a new species not yet described. It did not match with the recent sequence of the old known Pseudografillaria arenicola (Meixner, 1938), and it could be similar to a turbellarian causing epitozootics (with mortalities > 60%) in the same fish species as well as in other cultured marine fish in China (Wang et al., 2002). Attempts to treat the infections with formalin baths were unsuccessful., [Conclusions]: The histological examination revealed the invasive nature of the worms infecting red drum, and the gill damage could easily explain the anaemia and the asphyxiation of the fish. According to the obtained molecular data, the available orphan sequences and morphological descriptions, the species could be new to science, but probably present in other far distant locations and hosts. Studies are ongoing for the full description of the species. The current study and the previous reports on turbellarians causing lesions on various marine fish from the Pacific, Caribbean, Chinese and Australian waters, suggest that these parasites may represent and emerging problem in aquaculture, as they are transmitted fish-to-fish, and topic treatments can be ineffective since they live within gill tissues. Future studies are needed to decipher if other reservoir hosts could be involved in its transmission to cultured fish, and which farming conditions favour its blooming.

Sheltering inside a civilian vehicle has proved to be a high risk strategy in case of wildfire entrapment. Survival is by no means guaranteed, especially in moderate to high-intensity wildfires. However, vehicles do offer a certain degree of fire protection, which can be reinforced by ad-hoc fire resistant technology. In this paper, we present the experimental performance analysis of a self-protection system that has been designed to protect people’s life in case of fire entrapment. Similar to a firefighter fire shelter, the designed system can be quickly deployed covering the whole vehicle. In case of fire exposure, this fabric provides additional heat protection to the occupants and the vehicle itself. An experimental burning was designed in order to simulate real fire exposure conditions in case of vehicle entrapment in a rural road. An ex-situ 2-m high fuel bed composed of Pinus halepensis fine logging slash was arranged in a 13 m long x 6 m wide area. Fire was ignited at one end of the fuel bed and spread driven by an induced constant air flow (3 m/s midflame wind speed). 2.8 m away from the other fuel bed end, a car covered with the fire protection fabric was placed, parallel to the fire. Data analysis provided mean values of fire rate of spread (2 m/s), fireline intensity (1800 kW/m), flame height (6.5 m), flame tilt angle (30º), flame depth (2 m), flame temperature (800 ºC) and flame emissive power (47.5 kW/m2 ). Maximum air temperatures inside the vehicle ranged around 41-42.5 ºC during a period between 20 min and 35 min after ignition. A thermocouple in contact with the internal side of the driver’s window registered a maximum value of 47.3 ºC. These results evidenced the good performance of the fabric when protecting eventual vehicle occupants against thermal exposure from wildfires of moderate intensity.

BackgroundNon-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been proposed as an independent cardiovascular risk factor. The present study evaluated the prevalence of NAFLD in a cohort of type 1 diabetic (T1D) patients and its potential relationship with subclinical cardiovascular disease (CVD). MethodsOne hundred T1D patients (mean [SD] age 39.47.8years, disease duration 21.78.6years) were included in the present cross-sectional study. All subjects underwent abdominal ultrasonography for detection of NAFLD, carotid ultrasonography to measure the carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and atheroma plaques, and cardiac tomography for evaluation of the coronary artery calcium score (CACS). ResultsOf the study cohort, 12% had NAFLD and 23% had a CACS >0. The T1D subjects with NAFLD had a greater CIMT than those without NAFLD (0.650.17 vs 0.550.14mm; P=0.029), but there were no significant differences between the two groups with regard to CACS, glycemic control, or the presence of carotid plaques. Patients with high liver enzyme concentrations (>20U/L) had a higher CIMT (0.600.16 vs 0.540.13; P=0.04) and there was a higher proportion of altered CACS (17 [73.9%] vs 6 [26.1%]; P=0.001) and detection of carotid plaques (10 [76.9%] vs 3 [23.1%]; P=0.014) in this group. ConclusionsA low prevalence of NAFLD was found in the T1D cohort that was associated globally with a low proportion of abnormal CVD imaging markers, although these imaging parameters were worse in subjects in whom NAFLD was detected.

Authors report a community school study about smoking adolescent behaviour, 8º, 9º, and 10 º year in Zaragoza (Spain). The study was implemented in the 2006-2007 and 20072008 courses respectively. The study's objectives were to asses the effectiveness of smoking counselling with the aid of a specifically designed leaflet. The study also included an evaluation of expired CO. The authors surveyed on smoking behaviour as well as on personal details of the students. The study includes 8 intervention schools and 7 control schools. Allocation wasn't randomized due to logistic reasons. The interventional group received advice against smoking by means of spoken counsel from a professional supported by a leaflet. The control group only received the spoken counsel. The expired CO was assessed in each group. The counsel was repeated in each group one year later to the same students. In all 1,720 students were assessed: 51.95% men and 48.5% women. The median age of the students was 14.6 years SD: 1.36. The authors found that 19.7% of the students were smokers. The distribution of smokers by sex was 24.7% of women versus 15.3% of men X2 = 24.1 p < 0.0001. Smoking behaviour between interventional or control group wasn't statistically different. Conclusions: There wasn't any evidence of effectiveness in using a leaflet added to the spoken counsel. Prevalence of smoking was very high: 19.7% among adolescents of Zaragoza. The study shows a increase of smoking between 8º and 10º.

- Abstract
Trabajo presentado en la 14th EAFP International Conference (European Association of Fish Pathologists), celebrada en Praga (República Checa), del 14 al 19 de septiembre de 2009, An expert working group used a risk ranking technique to compile a list of fish disease hazards (pathogens) of relevance to Spanish aquaculture. It was possible to divide the list into three groups: I-high national risk; II-regional risk; III-low risk. The three groups were as follows: Group I (high risk) Aphanomyces invadans (EUS)**, spring viraemia of carp virus (SVCV), koi herpes virus (KHV)¿ and infectious haematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV)¿ Group II (regional risk) Enteromyxum spp. (leei and scophthalmi), Aquabirnaviridae (incl. IPNV), viral encephalopathy and retinopathy virus (VERV), Streptococcus iniae, Philasterides dicentrarchi and Aeromonas salmonicida (in the marine environment). Group III (low risk) Sparicotyle chrysophrii/Microcotylidae, Flavobacterium maritimus, Photobacterium piscicida, Togaviridae, Sphaerospora testicularis, Edwardsiella tarda, Birnavirus (no-EVE), Lactococcus garviae, viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV)¿, Tenacibaculum maritimum, epizootic haematopoietic necrosis virus (EHNV)**, Renibacterium salmoninarum (BKD) and Gyrodactylus salaris. The exercise formed part of a project concerning aquaculture health management (Jacumar-GESAC¿) in Spain and is being used to help define sampling plans for disease monitoring using epidemiological and risk-based criteria. **The diseases caused by these pathogens are notifiable and exotic according to Directive 2006/88/EC ¿The diseases caused by these pathogens are notifiable and non-exotic according to Directive 2006/88/EC ¿Plan Nacional de Cultivos Marinos; Gestión sanitaria de la acuicultura: Adaptación a la nueva normativa (GESAC) ¿ financed by the Junta Nacional Asesora de Cultivos Marinos (Jacumar)
