Abstract A de-embedding method for determining all scattering (S-) parameters (e.g., characterization) of a sensing area of planar microstrip sensors (two-port network or line) is proposed using measurements of S-parameters with no calibration. The method requires only (partially known) non-reflecting line and reflecting line standards to accomplish such a characterization. It utilizes uncalibrated S-parameter measurements of a reflecting line, direct and reversed configurations of a non-reflecting line, and direct and reversed configurations of the sensing area. As different from previous similar studies, it performs such a characterization without any sign ambiguity. The method is first validated by extracting the S-parameters of a bianisotropic metamaterial slab, as for a two-port network (line), constructed by split-ring-resonators (SRRs) from waveguide measurements. Then, it is applied for determining the S-parameters of a sensing area of a microstrip sensor involving double SRRs next to a microstrip line. The root-mean-square-error (RMSE) analysis was utilized to analyze the accuracy of our method in comparison with other techniques in the literature. It has been observed from such an analysis that our proposed de-embedding technique has the lowest RMSE values for the extracted S-parameters of the sensing area of the designed sensor in comparison with those of the compared other de-embedding techniques in the literature, and have similar RMSE values in reference to those of the thru-reflect-line calibration technique. For example, while RMSE values of real and imaginary parts of the forward reflection S-parameter of this sensing area are, respectively, around 0.0271 and 0.0279 for our de-embedding method, those of one of the compared de-embedding techniques approach as high as 0.0318 and 0.0324.

Thousands of pollutants are threatening our water supply, putting at risk human and environmental health. Between them, trace metals are of significant concern, due to their high toxicity at low concentrations. Abandoned mining areas are globally one of the major sources of toxic metals. Nowadays, no method can guarantee an immediate response for quantifying these pollutants. In this work, a novel technique based on microwave spectroscopy and planar sensors for in situ real-time monitoring of water quality is described. The sensors were developed to directly probe water samples, and in situ trial measurements were performed in freshwater in four polluted mining areas in the UK. Planar microwave sensors were able to detect the water pollution level with an immediate response specifically depicted at three resonant peaks in the GHz range. To the authors’ best knowledge, this is the first time that planar microwave sensors were tested in situ, demonstrating the ability to use this method for classifying more and less polluted water using a multiple-peak approach.

This paper highlights interest in the implementation of microwave sensors based on resonant elements, the subject of a special issue in the journal. A classification of these sensors on the basis of the operating principle is presented, and the advantages and limitations of the different sensor types are pointed out. Finally, the paper summarizes the different contributions to the special issue.

In this paper, an electromagnetic sensor which can operate simultaneously in capacitive and inductive modalities with sensitivities to permittivity, conductivity, and permeability is developed, and a novel measurement strategy is proposed accordingly. The sensor is composed of two planar spiral coils with a track width of 4 mm, which promotes its capacitive mode. The capacitive coupling is measured in common mode, while the inductive coupling is measured in differential mode. In capacitive mode, the sensor is sensitive to changes in permittivity, i.e., the dielectric material distribution; while in inductive mode, it is sensitive to magnetically permeable material and electrically conductive material. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the sensor can simultaneously measure dielectric and conductive materials. This novel sensing element has been designed and implemented. The ATLAS experiment will undergo a major upgrade of the tracker system in view of the high luminosity phase of the LHC (HL-LHC) foreseen to start around 2025. Thin planar pixel modules are promising candidates to instrument the new pixel system, thanks to the reduced contribution to the material budget and their high charge collection efficiency after irradiation. New designs of the pixel cells, with an optimized biasing structure, have been implemented in n-in-p planar pixel productions with sensor thicknesses of 270 μm. Using beam tests, the gain in hit efficiency is investigated as a function of the received irradiation fluence. The outlook for future thin planar pixel sensor productions will be discussed, with a focus on thin sensors with a thickness of 100 and 150 μm and a novel design with the optimized biasing structure and small pixel cells (50×50 and 25×100 μm 2 ). These dimensions are foreseen for the new ATLAS read-out chip in 65 nm CMOS technology and the fine segmentation will represent a challenge for the tracking in the forward region of the pixel system at HL-LHC. To predict the performance of 50×50 μm 2 pixels at high η , FE-I4 compatible planar pixel sensors have been studied before and after irradiation in beam tests at high incidence angle with respect to the short pixel direction. The main electroanalytical characteristics of potentiometric planar sensors made by screen printing are determined in solutions of an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The effect of the current lead material, composition of carbon ink (carbon type and concentration, plastifier, solvent, electroactive compound) on the analytical signal of planar sensors in SDS solutions are studied; the optimum conditions of their operations are found. Bacterial metabolisms using electron acceptors other than oxygen (e.g., methanogenesis and fermentation) largely contribute to element cycling and natural contaminant attenuation/mobilization, even in well-oxygenated porous environments, such as shallow aquifers. This paradox is commonly explained by the occurrence of small-scale anoxic microenvironments generated by the coupling of bacterial respiration and dissolved oxygen (O 2 ) transport by pore water. Such microenvironments allow facultative anaerobic bacteria to proliferate in oxic environments. Microenvironment dynamics are still poorly understood due to the challenge of directly observing biomass and O 2 distributions at the microscale within an opaque sediment matrix. To overcome these limitations, we integrated a microfluidic device with transparent O 2 planar optical sensors to measure the temporal behavior of dissolved O 2 concentrations and biomass distributions with time-lapse videomicroscopy. Our results reveal that bacterial colony morphology, which is highly variable in flowing porous systems, controls the formation of anoxic microenvironments. We rationalize our observations through a colony-scale Damköhler number comparing dissolved O 2 diffusion and a bacterial O 2 uptake rate. Our Damköhler number enables us to predict the pore space fraction occupied by anoxic microenvironments in our system for a given bacterial organization.

A method for the analysis of the thiocholine concentration, as well as the activity of the butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) enzyme and its inhibitors, using thiol-sensitive planar sensors has been proposed. Thiocholine sensitivity of the sensors was achieved by a mediator layer of manganese dioxide formed on a working carbon electrode. The detection limits for BChE and its inhibitor diazinon were 1 × 10 M and 1 × 10 M, respectively. The approach that was developed simplifies the analysis of inhibitors. Abstract: The foreseen luminosity upgrade for the LHC (a factor of 5-10 more in peak luminosity by 2021) poses serious constraints on the technology for the ATLAS tracker in this High Luminosity era (HL-LHC). In fact, such a luminosity increase leads to increased occupancy and radiation damage of the tracking detectors. To investigate the suitability of pixel sensors using the proven planar technology for the upgraded tracker, the ATLAS Planar Pixel Sensor R&D Project was established comprising 17 institutes and more than 80 scientists. Main areas of research are the performance of planar pixel sensors at highest fluences, the exploration of possibilities for cost reduction to enable the instrumentation of large areas, the achievement of slim or active edge designs to provide low geometric inefficiencies without the need for shingling of modules and the investigation of the operation of highly irradiated sensors at low thresholds to increase the efficiency. In the following I will present results from the group, concerning mainly irradiated-devices performance, together with studies for new sensors, including detailed simulations. Abstract: A novel planar interdigital sensor-based sensing system has been developed for detection of dangerous marine biotoxins in seafood. Our main objective is to sense the presence of dangerous contaminated acid in mussels and other seafood by observing the change of reactive impedance of the planar interdigital sensors. Initial studies were conducted with three peptide derivatives namely sarcosine, proline and hydroxylproline. These three chemicals are structurally closely related to our target molecule. The proline molecule is arguably the most important amino acid in peptide conformation, contains the basic structural similarity to the domoic acid. Three novel interdigital sensors have been designed and fabricated. All sensors have the same effective area but having different sensor configurations. The initial results show that sensors respond very well to the chemicals and it is possible to discriminate the different chemicals from the output of the sensor. The sensors were also being tested with three seafood products. Results from the analysis have shown that one configuration has better sensitivity compared to other configurations. The sensor with the best sensitivity was chosen for experiment using proline and mussels. The changes in sensor sensitivity were analyzed with mussels before and after adding the proline. The presence of proline on the mussel surface and also injected proline to the mussels was very clearly detected by the sensor. Further experiment was conducted with small amount of domoic acid (0.5–5.0μg) injected to a mussel and it was found that the chosen sensor was able to detect small amount of domoic acid (1.0μg) injected into the mussel sample. The result shows that the sensor was able to detect approximately 12.6μg/g of domoic acid in mussel meat. The outcomes from the experiments provide chances of opportunity for further research in developing a low cost miniature type of sensors for reliable sensing system for commercial use.
