Abstract

We present new exclusion bounds obtained at the European X-ray Free Electron Laser facility (EuXFEL) on axion-like particles (ALPs) in the mass range 10^{-3} eV < m_a < 10^{4} eV. Our experiment exploits the Primakoff effect via which photons can, in the presence of a strong external electric field, decay into axions, which then convert back into photons after passing through an opaque wall. While similar searches have been performed previously at a 3^rd generation synchrotron [1], our work demonstrates improved sensitivity, exploiting the higher brightness of X-rays at EuXFEL., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

2. Dose rate dependence of TID damage to 65 nm CMOS transistors in X-ray irradiations of the ATLAS ITk Pixel ASIC (ITkPix)

Abstract

The ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk) upgrade for the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) requires a radiation-tolerant pixel readout chip, which must withstand a total ionising dose (TID) of up to 1 Grad. The readout ASIC for the ITk upgrade has been designed by the RD53 collaboration using 65 nm CMOS technology. In order to characterise the radiation tolerance of the chip digital logic, the RD53 ASICs include ring oscillators, which can be used to measure gate delay degradation. Extensive X-ray irradiation studies of the ring oscillators have been performed on the ITk Pixel pre-production readout ASIC, ITkPixV1. A dependence of radiation damage on dose rate has been observed in 65 nm CMOS technology. This paper aims to quantify the dose rate dependence of TID damage to the ITkPix ring oscillators and, therefore, the ITkPix ASIC digital logic. X-ray irradiations at different dose rates between 20 krad/h and 30 Mrad/h are compared. A dose rate dependence is observed, with 2-3 times more damage at the lowest dose rate of 20 krad/h, compared to 4 Mrad/h. The dose rate dependence was also observed to be dependent on transistor size and type.

Abstract

This paper outlines the results of investigations into the effects of radiation damage in the mini-MALTA prototype. Measurements were carried out at Diamond Light Source using a micro-focus X-ray beam, which scanned across the surface of the device in 2 $\mathrm{\mu m}$ steps. This allowed the in-pixel photon response to be measured directly with high statistics. Three pixel design variations were considered: one with the standard continuous $\mathrm{n^-}$ layer layout and front-end, and extra deep p-well and $\mathrm{n^-}$ gap designs with a modified front-end. Five chips were measured: one unirradiated, one neutron irradiated, and three proton irradiated.

Abstract

CDS is a process used in many CCD readout systems to cancel the reset noise component that would otherwise dominate. CDS processing typically consists of subtracting the integrated video signal during a "signal" period from that during a "reset" period. The response of this processing depends therefore on the shape of the video signal with respect to the integration bounds. In particular, the amount of noise appearing in the final image and the linearity of the pixel value with signal charge are affected by the choice of the CDS timing intervals. In this paper, we use a digital CDS readout system which highly oversamples the video signal (as compared with the pixel rate) to reconstruct pixel values for different CDS timings using identical raw video signal data. We use this technique to develop insights into optimal strategy for selecting CDS timings both in the digital case (where the raw video signal may be available), and in the general case where it is not. In particular, we show that the linearity of the CDS operation allows subtraction of the raw video signals of pixels in bias images from those in illuminated images to directly show the effects of CDS processing on the final (subtracted) pixel values., Comment: presented at Image Sensors for Precision Astronomy (ISPA2018) conference, Caltech, December 2018

Abstract

We describe the commissioning of a system which has been built to investigate optimal operation of CCDs for the LSST telescope. The test system is designed for low vibration, high stability operation and is capable of illuminating a detector in flat-field, projected spot, projected pattern and Fe-55 configurations. We compare and describe some considerations when choosing a gain calibration method for CCDs which exhibit the brighter-fatter effect. An optimisation study on a prototype device of gain and full well with varying back substrate bias and gate clock levels is presented.

Abstract

The Timepix particle tracking telescope has been developed as part of the LHCb VELO Upgrade project, supported by the Medipix Collaboration and the AIDA framework. It is a primary piece of infrastructure for the VELO Upgrade project and is being used for the development of new sensors and front end technologies for several upcoming LHC trackers and vertexing systems. The telescope is designed around the dual capability of the Timepix ASICs to provide information about either the deposited charge or the timing information from tracks traversing the 14 x 14mm matrix of 55 x 55 um pixels. The rate of reconstructed tracks available is optimised by taking advantage of the shutter driven readout architecture of the Timepix chip, operated with existing readout systems. Results of tests conducted in the SPS North Area beam facility at CERN show that the telescope typically provides reconstructed track rates during the beam spills of between 3.5 and 7.5 kHz, depending on beam conditions. The tracks are time stamped with 1 ns resolution with an efficiency of above 98% and provide a pointing resolution at the centre of the telescope of 1.6 um . By dropping the time stamping requirement the rate can be increased to 15 kHz, at the expense of a small increase in background. The telescope infrastructure provides CO2 cooling and a flexible mechanical interface to the device under test, and has been used for a wide range of measurements during the 2011-2012 data taking campaigns., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

A prototype particle tracking telescope has been constructed using Timepix and Medipix ASIC hybrid pixel assemblies as the six sensing planes. Each telescope plane consisted of one 1.4 cm2 assembly, providing a 256x256 array of 55 micron square pixels. The telescope achieved a pointing resolution of 2.3 micron at the position of the device under test. During a beam test in 2009 the telescope was used to evaluate in detail the performance of two Timepix hybrid pixel assemblies; a standard planar 300 micron thick sensor, and 285 micron thick double sided 3D sensor. This paper describes a detailed charge calibration study of the pixel devices, which allows the true charge to be extracted, and reports on measurements of the charge collection characteristics and Landau distributions. The planar sensor achieved a best resolution of 4.0 micron for angled tracks, and resolutions of between 4.4 and 11 micron for perpendicular tracks, depending on the applied bias voltage. The double sided 3D sensor, which has significantly less charge sharing, was found to have an optimal resolution of 9.0 micron for angled tracks, and a resolution of 16.0 micron for perpendicular tracks. Abstract

Using data collected with the LHCb detector in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, the semileptonic decays B¯s0→Ds*Xμ-v¯ and B¯s0→D0K+Xμ-v¯ are detected. Two structures are observed in the D0K+ mass spectrum at masses consistent with the known Ds1+(2536) and Ds2*(2573)+ mesons. The measured branching fractions relative to the total B¯s0 semileptonic rate are B(B¯s0→Ds2*+Xμ-v¯)/B(B¯s0→D0→Xμ-v¯)=(3.3±1.0±0.4)%, \ud B(B¯s0→Ds1*+Xμ-v¯)/B(B¯s0→D0→Xμ-v¯)= (5.4±1.2±0.5)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This is the first observation of the Ds2*+ state in B¯s0 decays; we also measure its mass and width.

Abstract

Dose-rate heterogeneity (i.e. individual mineral grains receiving different radiation doses per unit of time) is now considered to be a major cause of dispersion in equivalent dose (De) estimates in trapped charge dating. This is caused by the inhomogeneous spatial distribution of radionuclides within sediments or archaeological materials (1-2) and relates to the different ranges (a few millimetres in the case of β- particles) of particles/radiation emitted during the decay of natural radioisotopes (3-5). Realizing this experimentally has been difficult but some attempts have been made [6-8]. Here, we investigate and demonstrate the potential of a silicon (Si)-based time-pixelated detector (Timepix 3) to determine the spatial distribution of different types of radiation (α-particles, β-particles, and γ-rays) and to help identify radionuclides such as potassium (K), uranium (U) and thorium (Th). Timepix detectors are small (area:14x14 mm, pixel matrix: 256x256) complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) hybrid pixel detectors that are capable of directly detecting and visualizing ionizing radiation without needing a complex experimental setup. We first discuss the pattern-recognition algorithm to distinguish between different types of particles and then demonstrate the timepix's capabilities in spotting radionuclides on polished sections rich in K, U and Th. Abstract

The Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) is a large international scientific facility proposed by the Chinese particle physics community to explore the Higgs boson and provide critical tests of the underlying fundamental physics principles of the Standard Model that might reveal new physics. The CEPC, to be hosted in China in a circular underground tunnel of approximately 100 km in circumference, is designed to operate as a Higgs factory producing electron-positron collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 240 GeV. The collider will also operate at around 91.2 GeV, as a Z factory, and at the WW production threshold (around 160 GeV). The CEPC will produce close to one trillion Z bosons, 100 million W bosons and over one million Higgs bosons. The vast amount of bottom quarks, charm quarks and tau-leptons produced in the decays of the Z bosons also makes the CEPC an effective B-factory and tau-charm factory. The CEPC will have two interaction points where two large detectors will be located. This document is the second volume of the CEPC Conceptual Design Report (CDR). It presents the physics case for the CEPC, describes conceptual designs of possible detectors and their technological options, highlights the expected detector and physics performance, and discusses future plans for detector R&D and physics investigations. The final CEPC detectors will be proposed and built by international collaborations but they are likely to be composed of the detector technologies included in the conceptual designs described in this document. Abstract

This paper outlines the results of investigations into the effects of radiation damage in the mini-MALTA prototype. Measurements were carried out at Diamond Light Source using a micro-focus X-ray beam, which scanned across the surface of the device in 2 $\mathrm{\mu m}$ steps. This allowed the in-pixel photon response to be measured directly with high statistics. Three pixel design variations were considered: one with the standard continuous $\mathrm{n^-}$ layer layout and front-end, and extra deep p-well and $\mathrm{n^-}$ gap designs with a modified front-end. Five chips were measured: one unirradiated, one neutron irradiated, and three proton irradiated.
