Abstract

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are the most widespread xenobiotic pollutants in water and their abatement usually involves expensive and energy-consuming treatments. In this work, anthracene (AN) was selected as the recalcitrant model of PAHs and its solar light-stimulated heterogeneous photocatalytic abatement in aerated aqueous media was investigated using a new TiO derived thermoplastic nanocomposite in thin film form. The results were also compared with the benchmark TiO photocatalyst in slurry form. Finally, the possible contribution of reactive intermediates such as hydroxyl radical, AN radical cation and singlet oxygen, was investigated by using a hydroxyl radical trap and laser flash photolysis. Based on the obtained results, a feasible mechanism for AN photodegradation, which involves hydroxyl radical as the key oxidizing species is proposed., This research was funded by the University of Catania (Piano di incentivi per la ricerca di Ateneo, PIACERI–Linea 2).

Abstract

Photocatalytic remediation represents a potential sustainable solution to the abatement of xenobiotic pollutants released within the water environment. Aeroxide® P25 titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) are well-known as one of the most efficient photocatalysts in several applications, and have also been investigated in water remediation as suspended powder. Recently, their application in the form of thin films has been revealed as a potential alternative to avoid time-consuming filtration processes. Polymers represent suitable substrates to immobilize TiO2 NPs, allowing further production of thin films that can be exploited as a photoactive coating for environmental remediation. Nevertheless, the methods adopted to immobilize TiO2 NPs on polymer matrix involve time-consuming procedures and the use of several reactants. Here, titanium dioxide-based nanocomposites (NCx) were obtained through a new approach based on Methyl Methacrylate in situ bulk polymerization and were compared with a blended mixture (BL). Their morphology and chemical–physical properties were investigated through Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), UV–Vis, and Raman spectroscopies. It was revealed that the in situ approach deeply influences the chemical–physical interactions between the polymer matrix and TiO2 NPs. Photocatalytic experiments revealed the boosted photodegradation activity of NCx thin films, induced by the in situ approach. The photodegradation of paraquat and acetaminophen was also ascertained.

Abstract

Distance Learning had evolve through many ages and generation. This became the main source of teaching on the present since its become convenient and efficient to everyone. As COVID-19 pandemic creates a devastating effect throughout the world, Philippines become innovative on how they will able to adapt and continue the classes with the use of parents as the molder of their children. The main objective of the study is to correlate the level of parent’s involvement on students’ performance in distance learning of Negros Occidental High School during this times of pandemic. A sample size of three hundred thirty-six (336) students were accommodated in the study covered the Senior High School day class students for S.Y. 2020-2021 who are under the two learning modalities — print and digital learning and were randomly selected from different strands both Academic and Non Academic Tracks composed of grade levels namely Grade 11 and 12. A researcher made survey questionnaire was used as a research instrument to gathered data. Proper encryption and verification of data was done to derive a certain result. Results shown that parents involvement in distance learning have no significant relationship towards the performance of the student. The proponents suggested continuing the wider scope of the same study with having larger samples in expanding the range to both Junior High School and Senior High School in order to show various results may add to the body of knowledge in parent’s involvement and student’s performance.

Abstract

We report on new Zn−Salen oligomer receptors able to recognize a nerve agent simulant, namely dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), by a supramolecular approach. In particular, three Zn-Salen oligomers (Zn−Oligo−A, −B, and −C), differing by the length distribution, were obtained and characterized by NMR, Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), UV-Vis, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Furthermore, we investigated their recognition properties towards DMMP by using fluorescence measurements. We found that the recognition ability depends on the length of the oligomeric chain, and the Zn−Oligo−C shows a binding constant value higher than those already reported in literature for the DMMP detection.

Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate associations between CD4/CD8 ratio and pregnancy outcomes in women with HIV. Methods: We evaluated, in a national study of pregnant women with HIV receiving antiretroviral treatment (ART), values of CD4/CD8 ratio at entry in pregnancy, changes between first and third trimester, and possible associations with preterm delivery, low birthweight, and HIV-RNA < 50 copies/ml at third trimester in univariate and multivariate analyses. Results: Among 934 women, 536 (57.4%) were already on ART at conception. CD4/CD8 ratio (baseline value 0.570) increased significantly between the first and third trimesters, particularly in women who started ART in pregnancy (+ 0.163, vs. + 0.036 in women already on treatment). The rate of CD4/CD8 ratio normalization, defined by achieving a ratio ≥ 1 at the third trimester, was 13.2%. In multivariable analyses, women who entered pregnancy with a CD4/CD8 ratio < 0.3, compared to women with ratio ≥ 1, were almost four-times less likely to have third-trimester HIV-RNA < 50 copies/ml (AOR 0.258, 95%CI 0.111–0.601), and more than twice as likely to have preterm delivery (AOR 2.379, 95%CI 1.082–5.232). For preterm delivery, also a baseline CD4/CD8 ratio between 0.3 and 0.45 was significantly associated with an increased risk (AOR: 3.415, 95%CI 1.690–6.900). Conclusion: We described for the first time independent associations of low CD4/CD8 ratio with preterm delivery and HIV-RNA suppression.

Abstract

Recognition and capture ofamyloidbeta (Aβ) is a challenging task for the early diagnosis of neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease. Here, we report a novel KLVFF-modified nanomagnet based on magneticnanoparticles(MNP) covered with a non-ionic amphiphilic β-cyclodextrin (SC16OH) and decorated with KLVFFoligopeptidefor the self-recognition of the homologous amino-acids sequence of Aβ to collect Aβ (1–42) peptide from aqueous samples. MNP@SC16OH and MNP@SC16OH/Ada-Pep nanoassemblies were fully characterized by complementary techniques both as solid powders and in aqueous dispersions. Single domain MNP@SC16OH/Ada-Pep nanomagnets of 20–40nm were observed by TEM analysis.DLSand ζ-potential measurements revealed that MNP@SC16OH nanoassemblies owned in aqueous dispersion ahydrodynamic radiusof about 150nm, which was unaffected by Ada-Pep decoration, while the negative ζ-potential of MNP@SC16OH (−40mV) became less negative (−30mV) in MNP@SC16OH/Ada-Pep, confirming the exposition of positively charged KLVFF on nanomagnets surface. The ability of MNP@SC16OH/Ada-Pep to recruit Aβ (1–42) in aqueous solution was evaluated by MALDI-TOF and compared with the ineffectiveness of undecorated MNP@SC16OH and VFLKF scrambled peptide-decorated nanoassemblies (MNP@SC16OH/Ada-scPep), pointing out theselectivityof KLVFF-decoratednanohybridtowards Aβ (1–42). Finally, the property of nanomagnets to extract Aβ inconditioned mediumof cells over-producing Aβ peptides was investigated as proof of concept of effectiveness of thesenanomaterialsas potential diagnostic tools.

Abstract

Background Atazanavir and darunavir represent the main HIV PIs recommended in pregnancy, but comparative data in pregnant women are limited. We assessed the safety and activity profile of these two drugs in pregnancy using data from a national observational study. Methods Women with atazanavir or darunavir exposure in pregnancy were evaluated for laboratory measures and main pregnancy outcomes (e.g. preterm delivery, low birthweight, non-elective caesarean section and neonatal gestational age-adjusted birthweight Z-score). Results Final analysis included 500 pregnancies with either atazanavir (n = 409) or darunavir (n = 91) exposure. No differences in pregnancy outcomes, weight gain in pregnancy, drug discontinuations, undetectable HIV-RNA, haemoglobin, ALT, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol were observed between the two groups. Abstract

Background No published studies have evaluated in pregnant women with HIV weight gain with different antiretroviral drug classes. Methods Data from a national cohort study were used. We compared absolute weight gain and occurrence of excessive weight gain in women with HIV who received during pregnancy integrase inhibitors (INSTI), protease inhibitors (PI), or non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTI). Excessive weight gain was defined according to the Institute of Medicine recommendations. Possible predictors of weight gain were assessed using univariate and multivariate analyses. Results Among 273 cases (PI: 191, NNRTI: 43, INSTI: 39), the mean weight increase was 11.3 kg, and 25.4% of the mothers had an excessive weight increase. No significant differences were found among the three treatment groups for absolute weight increase, occurrence of excessive weight gain, infant birthweight, and other pregnancy and laboratory outcomes. The comparisons of individual drugs, although based on a limited number of cases, suggested no major differences. A significant positive correlation was found between weight gain and CD4+ T-cell increase during pregnancy. In multivariate analyses, drug class and nucleoside backbone were not associated with absolute or excessive weight increase. Excessive weight increase was significantly associated with week of delivery (adjusted odds ratio: 1.74, 95% CI 1.15, 2.63), obesity (5.21, 95% CI 1.85, 14.64), overweight (7.95, 95% CI 3.26, 19.39), recent substance use (5.96, 95% CI 1.13, 31.40) and fasting 2nd trimester hyperglycaemia (3.94, 95% CI 1.14, 13.65). Conclusions No significant differences in absolute weight change or occurrence of excessive weight gain were found among women with HIV who received during pregnancy different classes of antiretroviral drugs.

Abstract

Objectives To assess in pregnant women with HIV the rates of amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS), and the outcomes associated with such procedures. Design Observational study. Data from the Italian National Program on Surveillance on Antiretroviral Treatment in Pregnancy were used. Setting University and hospital clinics. Population Pregnant women with HIV. Methods Temporal trends were analysed by analysis of variance and by the Chi-square test for trend. Quantitative variables were compared by Student's t-test and categorical data by the Chi-square test, with odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals calculated. Main outcome measures Rate of invasive testing, intrauterine death, HIV transmission. Results Between 2001 and 2015, among 2065 pregnancies in women with HIV, 113 (5.5%) had invasive tests performed. The procedures were conducted under antiretroviral treatment in 99 cases (87.6%), with a significant increase over time in the proportion of tests performed under highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) (100% in 2011–2015). Three intrauterine deaths were observed (2.6%), and 14 pregnancies were terminated because of fetal anomalies. Among 96 live newborns, eight had no information available on HIV status. Among the remaining 88 cases with either amniocentesis (n = 75), CVS (n = 12), or both (n = 1), two HIV transmissions occurred (2.3%). No HIV transmission occurred among the women who were on HAART at the time of invasive testing, and none after 2005. Conclusions The findings reinforce the assumption that invasive prenatal testing does not increase the risk of HIV vertical transmission among pregnant women under suppressive antiretroviral treatment. Tweetable abstract No HIV transmission occurred among women who underwent amniocentesis or CVS under effective anti-HIV regimens.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Morcellation of undiagnosed uterine sarcoma is cause of abdominal/pelvic dissemination, residual tumor and recurrence. In the preoperative evaluation of suspect uterine masses, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) total activity are referred to as the most effective tools, while computed tomography scan (CT) and LDH isoenzymes are less considered in literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 46 year old woman was admitted to our department with a large uterine mass. Ultrasonography, MRI and LDH total activity did not allow a diagnosis of malignancy, and the woman expressed the wish to avoid hysterectomy. In spite of this, we opted for a total abdominal hysterectomy instead of a laparoscopic myomectomy, due to an elevation of LDH5/LDH1 ratio and CT findings indicative of sarcoma. Histological examination revealed a high grade leiomyosarcoma, confirming our suspicion. Thus, we had avoided the risks linked to morcellation. CONCLUSIONS: Our experience suggests that LDH isoenzymes assessment may be relevant in preoperative diagnosis of uterine sarcoma. Further studies are necessary to determine its role in a diagnostic algorithm. We think it may be useful especially for patients with clinical or ultrasonographic suspicion of uterine sarcoma not confirmed by imaging techniques. Furthermore, the role of less considered imaging techniques, such as CT, should not be underestimated in challenging cases.
