Federally certified opioid treatment programs (OTPs) provide psychosocial counselling in addition to medications for opioid use disorder (MOUDs) using a patient-centered approach in providing substance use disorder treatment. This study explored factors associated with patients' adherence to counselling while receiving MOUD at an OTP. A retrospective cohort design using data on adult patients (n = 1151, 61% females, 39% males) admitted to an OTP from July 1, 2014, to June 30, 2016, was employed. The data were for single episodes of care up to 52 weeks. Survival analysis (cox proportional hazards regression) assessed the relationship of personal characteristics, socio-economic status, payment for services, type of substance use, comprehensive care and social support with counselling for up to a year. Results indicated that age, having services paid for by public means, was associated with counselling adherence. Primary heroin use patients had a higher risk of counselling adherence failure than patients who primarily used non-medicinal prescription substances. Treatment agencies may benefit from funding and using evidence-based practices for primary heroin use patients and young adults to better engage and retain these populations in treatment., (© 2022 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

A novel optical γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-based sensor was developed on interacting thiol compounds and o-phthalaldehyde (OPA) to form thiacetal compounds. Then, the thiacetal interacts with the GABA molecule to form an isoindole compound. The effects of four thiol compounds on the stability of the resulting isoindole compound were assessed. The 2-mercaptoethanol, "one of the most used derivatizing agents," is unexpectedly the least stable; while, 16-mercaptohexadecanoic acid resulted in the most durable isoindole compound. The developed sensor showed the capability for detecting GABA within a wide concentration range spanning from 500 nmol L -1 to 100 µmol L -1 . The detection limit was about 330 nmol L -1 , which indicated the high sensitivity of the developed sensor compared with those previously reported. The findings illustrated the ability to detect GABA at the physiological pH (pH = 7.4) without adjusting the pH value, opening the door for real applications. Furthermore, the sensor could detect various GABA concentrations in human serum with good recovery percentages (98% to 101.4%). In addition, this assay was applied to monitor GABA release from the SH-SY5Y cell line to convert glutamate into GABA. Aim: COVID-19 has exerted distress on virtually every aspect of human life with disproportionate mortality burdens on older individuals and those with underlying medical conditions. Variations in COVID-19 incidence and case fatality rates (CFRs) across countries have incited a growing research interest regarding the effect of social factors on COVID-19 case-loads and fatality rates. We investigated the effect of population median age, inequalities in human development, healthcare capacity, and pandemic mitigation indicators on country-specific COVID-19 CFRs across countries and regions., Subject and Methods: Using population secondary data from multiple sources, we conducted a cross-sectional study and used regional analysis to compare regional differences in COVID-19 CFRs as influenced by the selected indicators., Results: The analysis revealed wide variations in COVID-19 CFRs and the selected indicators across countries and regions. Mean CFR was highest for South America at 1.973% (± 0.742) and lowest for Oceania at 0.264% (± 0.107), while the Africa sub-region recorded the lowest scores for pandemic preparedness, vaccination rate, and other indicators. Population Median Age [0.073 (0.033 0.113)], Vaccination Rate [-3.3389 (-5.570.033 -1.208)], and Inequality-Adjusted Human Development Index (IHDI) [-0.014 (-0.023 -0.004)] emerged as statistically significant predictors of COVID-19 CFR, with directions indicating increasing Population Median Age, higher inequalities in human development and low vaccination rate are predictive of higher fatalities from COVID-19., Conclusion: Regional differences in COVID-19 CFR may be influenced by underlying differences in sociodemographic and pandemic mitigation indicators. Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) properties have been reported in organic molecular films. In particular, cyanine and squaraine films have been shown to exhibit ENZ properties in the visible spectral region with a strong 3 rd order nonlinear optical response near the ENZ spectral region. Noting both cyanine and squaraine belong to the polymethine family, a series of six curcuminoid borondifluoride (Curc) derivatives were developed to examine whether such a polymethine character is positively correlated with the ENZ property of the organic films. Those Curc derivatives possess a Donor-Acceptor-Donor (D-A-D) architecture with acceptor, AcacBF 2 , located at the molecular center. The backbone of Curc is designed such that the donor strength can be tuned to transit between charge transfer (CT) and polymethine character. This balance between CT and polymethine character of the Curc series is examined based on the Lippert-Mataga plot. As donor strength in the D-A-D structure increases, CT character is less marked resulting in a more dominant polymethine character. The structural and optical properties of the Curc films with a thickness in the order of 30 nm were examined to correlate the polymethine character with the ENZ response. The results obtained in isotropic Curc thin films demonstrate that an increase of polymethine character associated with a stronger donor strength leads to an appearance/enhancement of the ENZ property in the visible spectrum range from 500 to 670 nm. Near-IR organic light-emitting diodes (NIR-OLEDs) are potential light-sources for various sensing applications as OLEDs have unique features such as ultra-flexibility and low-cost fabrication. However, the low external electroluminescence (EL) quantum efficiency (EQE) of NIR-OLEDs is a critical obstacle for potential applications. Here, we demonstrate a highly efficient NIR emitter with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and its application to NIR-OLEDs. The NIR-TADF emitter, TPA-PZTCN, has a high photoluminescence quantum yield of over 40 % with a peak wavelength at 729 nm even in a highly doped co-deposited film. The EL peak wavelength of the NIR-OLED is 734 nm with an EQE of 13.4 %, unprecedented among rare-metal-free NIR-OLEDs in this spectral range. TPA-PZTCN can sensitize a deeper NIR fluorophore to achieve a peak wavelength of approximately 900 nm, resulting in an EQE of over 1 % in a TADF-sensitized NIR-OLED with high operational device durability (LT 95 >600 h.)., (© 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Nanoparticle-based cell differentiation therapy has attracted increasing research interest as it is a promising substitute for conventional cancer treatment methods. Here, the topological insulator bismuth selenide nanoparticle (Bi 2 Se 3 NP) was core-shelled with silver (Ag@Bi 2 Se 3 ) to represent remarkable biocompatibility and plasmonic features (ca. 2.3 times higher than those of Ag nanoparticle). Moreover, a newly developed RNA three-way junction (3WJ) structure was designed for the quad-functionalization of any type of nanoparticle and surface. One leg of the 3WJ was attached to the Ag@Bi 2 Se 3 , and the other leg harbored a cell-penetrating RNA and a florescence tag. The third leg was designed to inhibit micro-RNA-17 (miR-17) and to further release retinoic acid (RA). A new drug delivery mechanism was developed for the slow release of RA inside the cytosol based on the prerequisite inhibition of miR-17 using a strand displacement strategy. In this paper, we report a simple methodology for resolving the hydrophobicity challenges of RA by its conjugation with a RNA strand (RA/R) through a stimulus-responsive cross-linker. The developed nanobiohybrid material could fully differentiate SH-SY5Y cancer cells into neurons and stop their growth in 6 days without requiring sequential treatments which has not been reported yet. Using a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy technique, the RA delivery and the cell differentiation process were monitored nondestructively in real time. The fabricated nanobiohybrid material could open the new horizons in the fabrication of different diagnostic/therapeutic agents.

In this Article, we report the self-assembly of lanthanide complexes formed with two new tripodal ligands, L2 and L3, where binding strands are connected to a rigid triptycene anchor. The pyridine moieties are functionalized with methoxy and PEG groups to enhance ligand solubility and to evaluate the effect of these substituents on lanthanide coordination. These ligands were successfully synthesized and characterized, and their coordination properties were examined along the lanthanide series through speciation studies with NMR and ESI-MS. Well-defined tetranuclear complexes are formed with both ligands, but their stabilities with heavier lanthanides are considerably reduced, especially for complexes with L3. This is attributed to a destabilizing effect of pending PEG arms in combination with increased steric hindrance between binding strands upon complexation with smaller cations. The sensitization of lanthanide luminescence in tetranuclear complexes occurs despite one water molecule being coordinated to a metal ion.

During the course of our research studies aiming to combine the unique photophysical properties of lanthanide complexes and the intrinsic advantage of a nonlinear two-photon excitation, we described the proof-of-concept of a biphotonic multiplexing bio-imaging experiment. To that end, a new Tb-luminescent bioprobe [TbL(2)] was designed using the TACN-trispicolinate platform. The biphotonic imaging of T24 fixed cells stained either with [TbL(2)] or with the already described [EuL(1)] complexes is reported. Finally the biphotonic multiplexing experiment was performed using a combination of both probes using the spectral mode of the two-photon microscope.

A series of europium and terbium complexes based on a functionalized triazacyclononane carboxylate or phosphinate macrocyclic ligand is described. The influence of the anionic group, that is, carboxylate, methylphosphinate, or phenylphosphinate, on the photophysical properties was studied and rationalized on the basis of DFT calculated structures. The nature, number, and position of electron-donating or electron-withdrawing aryl substituents were varied systematically within the same phenylethynyl scaffold in order to optimize the brightness of the corresponding europium complexes and investigate their two-photon absorption properties. Herein, we provide some structural evidence of the complexation color-change of murexide solutions in presence of lanthanide, which has been used for decades in complexometric studies. For Ln = Sm to Lu and Y, the compounds crystallize as monomeric [Ln(Murex)3]⋅11 H2O with an N3O6 tricapped square-antiprism environment, which are stable up to 250 °C. Single-ion magnet (SIM) behavior is then observed on the Yb(III) derivative in an original nine-coordinated environment. In-field slow relaxation (Δ = (15.6±1) K; τ0 = 2.73×10(-6) s) is observed with a very narrow distribution of the relaxation time (αmax = 0.09). Magnetic and photophysical properties can be correlated. On one hand the analysis of NIR emission spectrum permits to have access to crystal field parameters and to compare them with those extracted from dc measurements. On the other hand, magnetic measurements permit to identify the nature of the MJ states involved in the (2)F5/2 → (2)F7/2 luminescence spectrum. A new family of glycodendrimer scaffolds containing 12 and 18 peripheral alpha-d-mannopyranosidic units has been synthesized by Cu(I)-catalyzed [1,3]-dipolar cycloadditions using sulfurated dendritic scaffolds bearing alkyne functionalities and novel TRIS derivatives.

We have synthesized a novel class of dendrimers, consisting of a polysulfurated pyrene core with appended poly(thiophenylene) dendrons (PyG0, PyG1, and PyG2, see Scheme 1), which exhibit remarkable photophysical and redox properties. In dichloromethane or cyclohexane solution they show a strong, dendron-localized absorption band with a maximum at around 260 nm and a band in the visible region with a maximum at 435 nm, which can be assigned to the pyrene core strongly perturbed by the four sulfur substituents. The dendrimers exhibit a strong (Phi=0.6), short-lived (tau=2.5 ns) core-localized fluorescence band with maximum at approximately 460 nm in cyclohexane solution at 293 K. A strong fluorescence is also observed in dichloromethane solution at 293 K, in dichloromethane/chloroform rigid matrix at 77 K, and in the solid state (powder) at room temperature. The dendrimers undergo reversible chemical and electrochemical one-electron oxidation with formation of a strongly colored deep blue radical cation. A second, reversible one-electron oxidation is observed at more positive potential values. The photophysical and redox properties of the three dendrimers are finely tuned by the length of their branches. The strong blue fluorescence and the yellow to deep blue color change upon reversible one-electron oxidation can be exploited for optoelectronic devices.
