Abstract

An online, cross-sectional survey was carried out between November 2017 and January 2018 to assess fertility awareness among students attending the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in Mexico City. A total of 371 students participated in the survey (n = 228 females, 143 males). 75% of females and 74% of males believed a woman's fertility begins to decline markedly after age 40. Over 75% of all participants overestimated the probability of couples having a live birth after undergoing one cycle of IVF. With regard to parenting intentions, only 48% of females wished to have children compared to 59% of males (p = 0.037) and men were more likely to have their first child at age 30 or later (71% men vs 55% women). In the event of infertility, participants had a higher preference not to have children or to pursue adoption rather than use in vitro fertilisation (IVF). In summary, university students in Mexico City demonstrated low levels of fertility awareness and a smaller proportion indicated a wish to have children than has been reported by young people elsewhere in the world. Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare blood glucose and plasma insulin profiles after bolus insulin infusion by a patch pump (PP) versus a conventional pump (CP), directly after placement and after Day 3 of use. Twenty patients with type 1 diabetes came in for two blocks of visits: one block of two visits while wearing the OmniPod® (Insulet Corp., Bedford, MA) insulin pump (PP) and one block of two visits while wearing the Medtronic Diabetes (Northridge, CA) Paradigm® pump (CP). Patients administered an identical mealtime insulin bolus of at least 6 IU. For PP, maximum glucose levels were 28.7% lower on Day 3 (P=0.020), when maximum insulin levels were 30.3% higher (P=0.002). For CP, maximum glucose levels were 26.5% lower on Day 3 (P=0.015), when maximum insulin levels were 46.4% higher (P=0.003). Glucose levels (mean [interquartile range]) were significantly lower on Day 3 for PP (168.2 [145.8] mg/dL vs. 139.4 [77.8] mg/dL; P=0.013), but not significantly so for CP (159.0 [66.1] mg/dL vs. 139.5 [57.9] mg/dL; P=0.084). Mean insulin levels were significantly higher on Day 3 for CP (195 [120] pmol/L vs. 230 [90] pmol/L; P=0.01), but not significantly so for PP (178 [106] pmol/L vs. 194 [120] pmol/L; P=0.099). There were no significant differences between the two catheter lengths. Postprandial glycemic excursions were lower on Day 3 of catheter wear time, but there were no differences between PPs and CPs. These findings support the proposal that catheter wear time plays an important role in insulin absorption

Abstract

Background: The Control to Range Study was a multinational artificial pancreas study designed to assess the time spent in the hypo- and hyperglycemic ranges in adults and adolescents with type 1 diabetes while under closed-loop control. The controller attempted to keep the glucose ranges between 70 and 180 mg/dL. A set of prespecified metrics was used to measure safety.

26. Delineating structures controlling sandstone-hosted base-metal deposits using high-resolution multicomponent seismic and radio-magnetotelluric methods: A case study from Northern Sweden

Abstract

Over the past few decades seismic methods have increasingly been used for the exploration of mineral, geothermal, and groundwater resources. Nevertheless, there have only been a few cases demonstrating the advantages of multicomponent seismic data for these purposes. To illustrate some of the benefits of three-component data, a test seismic survey, using 60 digital three-component sensors spaced between 2 m and 4 m and assembled in a 160 m-long prototype landstreamer, was carried out over shallow basement structures underlying mineralized horizons and over a magnetic lineament of unknown origin. Two different types of seismic sources, i.e., explosives and a sledgehammer, were used to survey an approximately 4 km-long seismic profile. Radio-magnetotelluric measurements were also carried out to provide constraints on the interpretation of the seismic data over a portion of the profile where explosive sources were used. Good quality seismic data were recorded on all three components, particularly when explosives were used as the seismic source. The vertical component data from the explosive sources image the top of the crystalline basement and its undulated/faulted surface at a depth of about 50 m-60 m. Supported by the radio-magnetotelluric results, however, shallower reflections are observed in the horizontal component data, one of them steeply dipping and associated with the magnetic lineament. The vertical component sledgehammer data also clearly image the crystalline basement and its undulations, but significant shear-wave signals are not present on the horizontal components. This study demonstrates that multicomponent seismic data can particularly be useful for providing information on shallow structures and in aiding mineral exploration where structural control on the mineralization is expected.

Abstract

This study assessed the accuracy and reliability of three continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems. We studied the Animas® (West Chester, PA) Vibe™ with Dexcom® (San Diego, CA) G4™ version A sensor (G4A), the Abbott Diabetes Care (Alameda, CA) Freestyle® Navigator I (NAV), and the Medtronic (Northridge, CA) Paradigm® with Enlite™ sensor (ENL) in 20 patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. All systems were investigated both in a clinical research center (CRC) and at home. In the CRC, patients received a meal with a delayed and increased insulin dose to induce a postprandial glucose peak and nadir. Hereafter, randomization determined which two of the three systems would be worn at home until the end of functioning, attempting use beyond manufacturer-specified lifetime. Patients performed at least five reference finger sticks per day. An analysis of variance was performed on all data points ≥15 min apart. Abstract

The incorporation of information-processing technology into analytical systems in the form of standard computing software has recently been advanced by the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI), both as expert systems and as neural networks.This paper considers the role of software in system operation, control and automation, and attempts to define intelligence. AI is characterized by its ability to deal with incomplete and imprecise information and to accumulate knowledge. Expert systems, building on standard computing techniques, depend heavily on the domain experts and knowledge engineers that have programmed them to represent the real world. Neural networks are intended to emulate the pattern-recognition and parallel processing capabilities of the human brain and are taught rather than programmed. The future may lie in a combination of the recognition ability of the neural network and the rationalization capability of the expert system.In the second part of the paper, examples are given of applications of AI in stand-alone systems for knowledge engineering and medical diagnosis and in embedded systems for failure detection, image analysis, user interfacing, natural language processing, robotics and machine learning, as related to clinical laboratories.It is concluded that AI constitutes a collective form of intellectual propery, and that there is a need for better documentation, evaluation and regulation of the systems already being used in clinical laboratories.

37. Reflection seismic characterization of the Grangesberg iron deposit and its mining-induced structures, central Sweden

Abstract

Reflection seismic investigation has been conducted on the Grangesberg apatite iron deposit. At the time of closure in 1989, the mine was operated at about 650 m below the surface. Mining activities might be resumed in the next years, which require better understanding of (1) the ore geometry and (2) the fault network which has developed up to the surface from excavated zones at depth. Two E-W oriented reflection lines with a total length of3.5 km were acquired. The seismic lines intersect the Grangesberg ore body and open pit, as well as several of the mining-induced faults. A weight drop mounted on an hydraulic bobcat truck was used as a seismic source; both cabled and wireless receivers were used for the data recording. Preprocessing of the data first required the cable-and wireless-recorded datasets to be merged before stacking all data available at each shot point. The dataset exhibits several shallow reflections which are likely to occur on steep lithologic or tectonic structures. Other deeper reflections are recorded; careful processing will be carried out in order to preserve such events in final stacked sections and help with refining the geological model of the area.
