Although agro-geotextile (AGT) emplacement shows potential to mitigate soil loss and, thus, increase carbon sequestration, comprehensive information is scanty on the impact of using agro-geotextiles on soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration, aggregate-associated C, and soil loss in the foothills of the Indian Himalayan Region. We evaluated the impacts of Arundo donax AGT in different configurations on SOC sequestration, aggregate stability, and carbon management index (CMI) since 2017 under maize-based cropping systems on a 4% land slope, where eight treatment procedures were adopted. The results revealed that A. donax placement at 0.5-m vertical-interval pea–wheat (M + AD10G0.5-P-W) treatment had ∼23% increase in SOC stock (27.87 Mg·ha−1) compared to the maize–wheat (M-W) system in the 0–30-cm soil layer. M + AD10G0.5-P-W and maize–pea–wheat treatments under bench terracing (M-P-W)BT had similar impacts on SOC stocks in that layer after 5 years of cropping. The total SOC values in bulk soils, macroaggregates, and microaggregates were ∼24, 20, and 31% higher, respectively, in plots under M + AD10G0.5-P-W treatment than M-W in the topsoil (0–5 cm). The inclusion of post-rainy season vegetable pea in the maize–wheat cropping system, along with AGT application and crop residue management, generated additional biomass and enhanced CMI by ∼60% in the plots under M + AD10G0.5-P-W treatment over M-W, although M + AD10G0.5-P-W and (M-P-W)BT had similar effects in the topsoil. In the 5–15-cm layer, there was no significant effect of soil conservation practices on CMI values. Under the M + AD10G0.5-P-W treatment, the annual mean soil loss decreased by ∼92% over M-W treatment. We observed that CMI, proportion of macroaggregates, aggregate-associated C, labile C, total SOC concentration (thus, SOC accumulation rate), and mean annual C input were strongly correlated with the mean annual soil loss from 2017 to 2021. The study revealed that the emplacement of an A. donax mat and incorporation of a legume in a cropping system (M-W), conservation tillage, and crop residue retention not only prevented soil loss but also enhanced C sequestration compared to farmers’ practice (M-W) in the Indian Himalayas. The significance of this study is soil conservation, recycling of residues and weeds, and climate change adaptation and mitigation, as well as increasing farmers’ income.

Sustainability of contemporary crop establishment and management practices is questioned due to soil degradation, higher carbon emission and declining soil productivity. Hence, this study was conducted to address the impacts of conservation agriculture (CA) practices like permanent broad beds (PBB), permanent narrow beds (PNB) and zero tilled flat beds (ZT) with residue retention on soil organic carbon (SOC) protection within aggregates in the Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP). Compared to conventionally tilled (CT) plots, the total SOC content was ∼27%–33% higher in the CA plots on equivalent mass basis. The soil physical properties, such as soil aggregation and mean weight diameter were considerably improved under the CA practices. The macroaggregates were ∼41, 37% and 27% higher in the PBB with residue (PBB + R), PNB with residue (PNB + R) and ZT with residue (ZT + R) plots (CA plots), respectively, than the CT plots in the surface soil (0–15 cm). The plots under PBB + R had ∼31% higher microaggregates within macroaggregates than the CT plots (24.4 g 100 g−1) soil. An increase in SOC content by ∼72, 55% and 69% was observed in the PBB + R, PNB + R and ZT + R plots over the CT plots in microaggregates within macroaggregates (3.02 Mg ha−1). However, plots under PBB + R, PNB + R and ZT + R had only ∼11, 3% and 23% more SOC within silt + clay fraction, respectively, than CT plots (5.85 Mg ha−1). Thus, SOC stabilization within microaggregates inside macroaggregates was the major mechanism, and not the chemical stabilization within silt + clay, of C sequestration under CA. As aggregate-associated carbon is an ecosystem property that strongly affects organic carbon stabilization, water holding capacity and resistance to erosion, growing maize/cotton–wheat system under PBB + R practice is a viable option for carbon sequestration in the IGP and similar agro-ecologies.

Despite many studies reporting conservation agriculture (CA) impacts on soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration, the impacts of long-term permanent bed planting under CA on SOC sequestration are rarely reported. Hence, this study assessed the permanent bed planted CA impacts on SOC sequestration rates in 0–30 and 30–60 cm soil depths under a cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)-wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) system in the Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP). The treatments comprised diverse combinations of tillage and residue retention (R), viz. conventional tillage (CT), narrow bed, narrow bed + R, broad bed, broad bed + R, flat bed + R and flat bed. Results indicated that the total SOC stock was ~32, 31 and 29% higher in CA plots than in CT plots (farmers' practice), in 0–30 cm soil depth. The SOC sequestration rate (over CT plots) in the CA plots was ~0.76 Mg C/ha/yr. The broad bed + R, narrow bed + R and flat bed + R plots had appreciably high total SOC sequestration (~0.24 Mg C/ha/yr) compared to CT plots in deep soil layer (30–60 cm). The yield data (2-year mean basis) was recorded highest in the broad bed + R (3.48 tonnes/ha and 8.11 tonnes/ha for cotton and wheat, respectively) and flat bed + R (3.38 tonnes/ha and 8.46 tonnes/ha for cotton and wheat, respectively) treatments showing a positive impact of the adoption of long-term CA in the IGP. Thus, adopting raised beds with residue retention has great potential for higher carbon sequestration and improving yields and can be recommended for sustainable intensification of arable lands in the region.

Agrogeotextiles (AGT) have potential for soil conservation, but limited information is available on effect of AGT on C sequestration and soil aggregation in Indian Himalayan region (IHR). Hence, the study was conducted on a 4% slope at Selakui, Dehradun in a maize-based cropping system where Arundo donax mats were used as AGT mats for soil conservation. Soil sampling was done in December 2021 after vegetable pea harvest and results indicated that in 0–15 cm soil depth, Maize + Arundo donax mat (10 cm thick) on 0.5 m vertical interval vegetable pea - wheat (M+A10D0.5-V-W) had ~23% higher total soil organic C (TSOC) in bulk soils than the control (M-W) plots. Plots with Arundo donax mats exhibited ~12% higher TSOC than plots without the mats. Plots under M+A10D0.5-V-W and maize-vegetable pea-wheat under bench terracing (M-V-W)B showed similar impacts on C sequestration. M+A10D0.5-V-W plots had ~36% greater macroaggregate and ~35% higher mean weight diameter (MWD) than M-W plots in the 0–15 cm soil depth. Microbial biomass C (MBC) enhanced by ~86% under M+A10D0.5-V-W over M-W in the 0–15 cm soil depth due to higher root biomass, root exudates and metabolizable C. Thus, microbial quotient (MQ) was also increased. Mean annual soil loss value of 2020–2021 and 2021–2022 ranged from 0.4 t/ha/yr to 2.9 t/ha/yr which was correlated with carbon management index (CMI) value. The CMI was ~38% higher in M+A10D0.5-V-W plots than M-W due to emplacement of Arundo donax mats, resulting in better soil aggregate stability. Thus, AGT application can be a potential practice for soil aggregation stability and C sequestration in the IHR. Conservation soil practices along with AGT are more profitable than conservation soil practices alone which had ~10% less benefit : cost ratio (B:C) on 4% land slopes of IHR.

Abstract Advanced pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is usually an incurable malignancy that needs newer therapeutic targets. Interleukin-1 receptor accessory protein (IL1RAP) is an innate immune mediator that regulates activation of pro-inflammatory and mitogenic signaling pathways. Immunohistochemistry on tissue microarrays demonstrated expression of IL1RAP in majority of human PDAC specimens and in murine pancreatic tumors from K-RasG122D/p53R172H/PDXCre (KPC) mice. Single cell RNA-Seq analysis of human primary pre-neoplastic lesions and adenocarcinoma specimens indicated that overexpression occurs during carcinogenesis. IL1RAP overexpression was associated with worse overall survival. IL1RAP knockdown significantly reduced cell viability, invasiveness, and clonogenic growth in pancreatic cancer cell lines. Inhibition of the downstream interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinase 4 (IRAK4) using two pharmacologic inhibitors, CA-4948 and PF06650833, resulted in reduced growth in pancreatic cancer cell lines and in xenograft models.

The aim of our study was to consider cellular telephone interference using different cellular telephones and implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) models. Thirty (26 men, 4 women) patients with ICDs were considered during follow-up. The ICD models were: Telectronics (7), CPI (7), Medtronic (7), Ventritex (5), and Ela Medical (4). AU patients were monitored with surface ECC; permanent telemetric endo-ECC monitoring was activated. Then, the effect of two different European telephone systems were tested: TACS system (Sony CM-Rlll, 2 W power) and GSM system (Motorola MG1-4All, 2 W power). For both systems, the effect during call, reception, active conversation (dialogue), and passive conversation (listening) were observed. Cellular telephones were located first in contact with the programming head, then near the leads system, and lastly, in the hands of the patient. At the end of the evaluations, memories were interrogated again to check for false arrhythmia detections. In five of these patients during arrhythmia induction at device implant (first implant or ICD replacement), we also evaluated possible interference between cellular telephones in the reception phase and the ventricular fibrillation detection phase of the ICD. All evaluated models showed significant noise in the telemetric transmission when the cellular telephone (both TACS and GSM) was located near the ICD and the programming head; noise was particularly significant during call and reception, in most cases leading to loss of telemetry. No false arrhythmia detections have been observed during tests with cellular telephones located on the ICDs. During tests performed with cellular telephones located near the leads or in the hands of patients, no telemetric noises or false arrhythmia detections were observed. During induced ventricular fibrillation and cellular telephones in reception mode near the device, the arrhythmia recognition was always correct and not delayed. In conclusion, present...
