Professionals that work in neonatal units need to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the premature infant who is in the transition process from feeding through a gastric tube to oral feeding. The main aim of this study was to validate the Oral FEeding Assessment in premaTure INfants (OFEATINg) instrument. A psychometric validity and reliability study was conducted in Neonatal Intensive Care Units of two public, metropolitan, university hospitals. The study population were premature infants at a postconceptional age of 31-35 weeks. The study included evaluation of the reliability, convergent, discriminant and construct validity, sensitivity and specificity of the OFEATINg instrument. A total of 621 feedings of 56 preterm infants were evaluated. Confirmatory factor analysis identified 3 factors and 13 indicators with a good fit to the model. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.78. The instrument showed high indices of inter-rater reliability (Pearson 0.9 and intraclass correlation coefficient 0.95). The OFEATINg scale is a valid and reliable instrument for evaluating the readiness for oral feeding of preterm infants. It may enable clinicians to evaluate the physiological and behavioral abilities involved in the oral feeding process and help them make decisions related to the transition to full oral feeding.Clinical trial registration: This study was prospectively registered at the two Institutional review boards.

La observaci��n de la pr��ctica educativa avile��a y el an��lisis de la literatura cient��fico- pedag��gica consultada, evidenci�� insuficiencias te��ricas y metodol��gicas que limitan la atenci��n a las demandas sociales del desarrollo local en el proceso de formaci��n del licenciado en Educaci��n Construcci��n. En tal sentido, se plante�� el problema: ��C��mo contribuir a la atenci��n de las demandas sociales del desarrollo local en el proceso de formaci��n del licenciado en Educaci��n Construcci��n? El objetivo de la investigaci��n consisti�� en proponer un modelo de la dimensi��n desarrollo curricular que contribuya a la atenci��n de las demandas sociales del desarrollo local en el proceso de formaci��n de dicho licenciado; se revelan las caracter��sticas, las cualidades y las exigencias para su instrumentaci��n. Desde una posici��n materialista dial��ctica se utilizaron m��todos emp��ricos y te��ricos, que facilitaron la comprensi��n e interpretaci��n de la din��mica del objeto de investigaci��n; sus contradicciones, relaciones, tendencias y desarrollo; adem��s, la estructura del modelo. Las t��cnicas investigativas y los procedimientos estad��stico- matem��ticos, viabilizaron el procesamiento de los datos. Para la evaluaci��n de la pertinencia del modelo y su efectividad, se utiliz�� el m��todo criterio de expertos y se realiz�� un pre-experimento pedag��gico que constat�� el cumplimiento del objetivo investigativo. Como resultados de la investigaci��n se aport�� un modelo de dicha dimensi��n y en el orden pr��ctico, las acciones metodol��gicas para concretar el cumplimiento de las exigencias declaradas en el modelo, as�� como un proceder que facilita su implementaci��n en el proceso de ense��anza-aprendizaje y en la clase como su c��lula fundamental.

Circulating microRNAs have emerged as potential diagnostic biomarkers. The deregulation of the microRNA miR-99a-5p has been previously described as an effective biomarker of early breast cancer. Herein, we present a new nanoporous anodic alumina (NAA)-based biosensor that can detect plasma miR-99a-5p with high sensitivity and selectivity. NAA pores are loaded with rhodamine B and capped with a specific oligonucleotide that is able to block cargo release until the target is present. In the presence of miR-99a-5p, the capping oligonucleotide recognizes the miR-99a-5p sequence and displaces it allowing the release of the encapsulated dye. This method is able to successfully distinguish healthy controls from breast cancer patients, even at early stages with high efficiency, showing the presented system as a promising tool for breast cancer detection.

Celiac disease is a complex and autoimmune disorder caused by the ingestion of gluten affecting almost 1% of global population. Nowadays an effective treatment does not exist, and the only way to manage the disease is the removal of gluten from the diet. Owing the key role played by gluten, clear and regulated labelling of foodstuff and smart methods for gluten detection are needed to fight frauds on food industry and to avoid the involuntary ingestion of this protein by celiac patients. On that scope, the development of a novel detection system of gluten is here presented. The sensor consists of nanoporous anodic alumina films loaded with a fluorescent dye and capped with an aptamer that recognizes gliadin (gluten's soluble proteins). In the presence of gliadin, aptamer sequences displace from the surface of anodic alumina resulting in pore opening and dye delivery. The dispositive shows a limit of detection (LOD) of 100 µg kg -1 of gliadin, good selectivity and a detection time of approximately 60 min. Moreover, the sensor is validated in real food samples. This novel probe allows fast gluten detection through a simple signalling process with potential use for food control.

Oxygen is vital for energy metabolism in mammals and the variability of the concentration is considered a clinical alert for a wide range of metabolic malfunctions in medicine. In this article, we describe the development and application of a micro-needle implantable platinum-based electrochemical sensor for measuring partial pressure of oxygen in intramuscular tissue (in-vivo) and vascular blood (ex-vivo). The Pt-Nafion® sensor was characterized morphological and electrochemically showing a higher sensitivity of -2.496 nA/mmHg (-1.495 nA/µM) when comparing with its bare counterpart. Our sensor was able to discriminate states with different oxygen partial pressures (pO 2 ) for ex-vivo (blood) following the same trend of the commercial gas analyzer used as standard. For in-vivo (intramuscular) experiments, since there is not a gold standard for measuring pO 2 in tissue, it was not possible to correlate the obtained currents with the pO 2 in tissue. However, our sensor was able to detect clear statistical differences of O 2 between hyperoxia and hypoxia states in tissue.

Pneumocystis pneumonia (PcP) is a disease produced by the opportunistic infection of the fungus Pneumocystis jirovecii . As delayed or unsuitable treatments increase the risk of mortality, the development of rapid and accurate diagnostic tools for PcP are of great importance. Unfortunately, current standard methods present severe limitations and are far from adequate. In this work, a time-competitive, sensitive and selective biosensor based on DNA-gated nanomaterials for the identification of P. jirovecii is presented. The biosensor consists of a nanoporous anodic alumina (NAA) scaffold which pores are filled with a dye reporter and capped with specific DNA oligonucleotides. In the presence of P. jirovecii genomic DNA, the gated biosensor is open, and the cargo is delivered to the solution where it is monitored through fluorescence spectroscopy. The use of capping oligonucleotides able to form duplex or triplex with P. jirovecii DNA is studied. The final diagnostic tool shows a limit of detection (LOD) of 1 nM of target complementary DNA and does not require previous amplification steps. The method was applied to identify DNA from P. jirovecii in unmodified bronchoalveolar lavage, nasopharyngeal aspirates, and sputum samples in 60 min. This is a promising alternative method for the routinely diagnosis of Pneumocystis pneumonia.

This review includes examples of silica-based, chromo-fluorogenic nanosensors with the aim of illustrating the evolution of the discipline in recent decades through relevant research developed in our group. Examples have been grouped according to the sensing strategies. A clear evolution from simply functionalized materials to new protocols involving molecular gates and the use of highly selective biomolecules such as antibodies and oligonucleotides is reported. Some final examples related to the evolution of chromogenic arrays and the possible use of nanoparticles to communicate with other nanoparticles or cells are also included. A total of 64 articles have been summarized, highlighting different sensing mechanisms.

AIM: To compare intra-amniotic versus fetal subcutaneous injections for selective fetal labeling in multifetal rat pregnancies. METHODS: A total of 14 pregnant rats were randomized to receive intra-amniotic injections of dyes (including Fluorescein, Indigo Carmine, or Evans Blue) or fetal subcutaneous injections (of commercial tattoo ink) both guided by ultrasound at 15-17 days of gestation. Survival, injection, and labeling success rates of both techniques were compared. RESULTS: Survival rates (84.4% for intra-amniotic injections vs. 90.9% for fetal subcutaneous injections) and injection success rates (94% for intra-amniotic injections vs. 100% for fetal subcutaneous injections) were similar among both groups. None of the neonates from the intra-amniotic injections group were labeled at birth, while 93% of the neonates from fetal subcutaneous injections group were tagged, showing a visible spot in the skin at birth. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that ultrasound-guided fetal subcutaneous injections might be an adequate strategy for selectively labeling fetuses in multifetal pregnant animals.

To evaluate the perinatal effects of a prenatal therapy based on intra-amniotic nutritional supplementation in a rabbit model of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR).

INTRODUCTION: The structural correspondence of neurodevelopmental impairments related to intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) that persists later in life remains elusive. Moreover, early postnatal stimulation strategies have been proposed to mitigate these effects. Long-term brain connectivity abnormalities in an IUGR rabbit model and the effects of early postnatal environmental enrichment (EE) were explored. MATERIALS AND METHODS: IUGR was surgically induced in one horn, whereas the contralateral one produced the controls. Postnatally, a subgroup of IUGR animals was housed in an enriched environment. Functional assessment was performed at the neonatal and long-term periods. At the long-term period, structural brain connectivity was evaluated by means of diffusion-weighted brain magnetic resonance imaging and by histological assessment focused on the hippocampus. RESULTS: IUGR animals displayed poorer functional results and presented altered whole-brain networks and decreased median fractional anisotropy in the hippocampus. Reduced density of dendritic spines and perineuronal nets from hippocampal neurons were also observed. Of note, IUGR animals exposed to enriched environment presented an improvement in terms of both function and structure. CONCLUSIONS: IUGR is associated with altered brain connectivity at the global and cellular level. A strategy based on early EE has the potential to restore the neurodevelopmental consequences of IUGR.

Los niños nacidos más tarde dentro del año de competición sufren de menores posibilidades de promoción, debido a su menor grado de madurez física, mental y emocional. Este fenómeno, es conocido como Efecto Relativo de la Edad o RAE. Objetivos: determinar si la fecha de nacimiento (mes de nacimiento) es un factor que interviene en la configuración de los equipos profesionales del fútbol español. Método: Se determinan los meses de nacimiento de los jugadores de la primera y segunda división del fútbol española. Un total de 42 equipos profesionales fueron analizados. Los datos se dispusieron en semestres y trimestres. Resultado: Hay una fuerte tendencia a la selección de los jugadores profesionales nacidos en los primeros trimestres del año frente a los nacidos en los últimos. Como conclusión en España hay un predominio de jugadores de fútbol profesionales en función del mes de nacimiento. Children born later in the year of competition have lower chances of promotion due to their low degree of physical, mental and emotional maturity. This phenomenon is known as Relative AgeEffect or RAE. The objective of this study is to determine if the date of birth (month of birth) is a factor in the configuration of the professional teams of Spanish football. As for the methodology, we determined the months of birth of the players of the first and second division of Spanish football. A total of 42 professional teams were analyzed. The data were arranged in semesters and quarters. The results show that there is a strong tendency for the selection of professional players born in the first quarters of the year compared to those born in the later ones. In conclusion, in Spain there is a predominance of professional football players depending on the month of birth.

Analyses of species-diversity patterns of remote islands have been crucial to the development of biogeographic theory, yet little is known about corresponding patterns in functional traits on islands and how, for example, they may be affected by the introduction of exotic species. We collated trait data for spiders and beetles and used a functional diversity index (FRic) to test for nonrandomness in the contribution of endemic, other native (also combined as indigenous), and exotic species to functional-trait space across the nine islands of the Azores. In general, for both taxa and for each distributional category, functional diversity increases with species richness, which, in turn scales with island area. Null simulations support the hypothesis that each distributional group contributes to functional diversity in proportion to their species richness. Exotic spiders have added novel trait space to a greater degree than have exotic beetles, likely indicating greater impact of the reduction of immigration filters and/or differential historical losses of indigenous species. Analyses of species occurring in native-forest remnants provide limited indications of the operation of habitat filtering of exotics for three islands, but only for beetles. Although the general linear (not saturating) pattern of trait-space increase with richness of exotics suggests an ongoing process of functional enrichment and accommodation, further work is urgently needed to determine how estimates of extinction debt of indigenous species should be adjusted in the light of these findings. © 2014 PNAS.

El deporte de competición constituye, probablemente, la manifestación deportiva más importante en niños en edad escolar. El objetivo de este estudio es el analizar la apreciación de los profesores sobre la competición deportiva como medio de enseñanza-aprendizaje en la educación primaria. Para alcanzar este objetivo se utiliza un cuestionario. La muestra está compuesta por 140 profesores. De los resultados se deduce que la competición es un buen instrumento para la formación y educación de los niños. Competitive sport probably constitutes, the most important sport manifestation among children at school age. The aim of this study is to analyze the teachers? perception about the competitive sports as a mean for teaching and learning in Primary Education.To reach this aim, a questionnaire has been use. The sample consists of 140 teachers. From the results it has been concluded that competition is a good instrument for the training and education of children.

This working group, which is concerned with operational research methods and applications to agricultural science in its broad meaning (i.e. including Forest Management and Fisheries), was formed in 2003 within the European Association of Operational Research Societies (EURO). The first meeting of the group was held at the former Silsoe Research Institute in 2004. The group intends to have regular meetings in Europe at approximately yearly intervals, usually within the EURO Conferences. However, the next meeting will be held in 2008 within the British Operational Research Society's OR50 conference in York, followed by the EURO XXIII conference in Bonn in 2009 and the EURO XXIV conference in Lisbon in 2010. The third meeting of the working group; chaired by Dr L. M. Plà of the University of Lleida, with the assistance of D. L. Библ. 18., Energy evolved from hemagglutination reaction or spent in dissociating erythrocyte agglutinates has been proved to be an excellent parameter for analyzing cell-cell interactions mediated by bridging molecules such as antibodies or lectins. We developed a new rheo-optical method to estimate the energy of dissociation of red blood cell agglutinates. In a Couette shear field agglutinates can be dissociated until a suspension of monodispersed cell is obtained. Intensity of light backscattered by suspended agglutinates increases during their mechanical dissociation. Variation of backscattered light intensity correlates with the energy spent in the process. The adhesive energy of erithrocyte agglutination induced by lectins has been estimated by applying this method. Two specific lectins (Dolichus Biflorus agglutinin and Ulex Europaeus agglutinin) and a new lectin obtained from Amarantus Gruentus seeds which specificity unknown were studied. Results obtained in this work for Dolichus Biflorus lectin are comparable with values published by other authors. An asymptotic decrease of adhesive energy was observed when the mechanical dissociation was applied several times on the same sample. Our results suggest that the cell detachment is accompanied by the extraction of membrane receptors. This finding is consistent with results obtained by other authors.

This chapter presents a case study of online teaching in Statistics and Operations Research (OR) at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC). UOC is a purely online university with headquarters in Barcelona, Spain, with students from many countries. As common to most math-related knowledge areas, teaching and learning Statistics and OR present difficult challenges in traditional higher education. These issues are exacerbated in online environments where face-to-face interactions between students and instructors as well as among students themselves are limited or non-existent. Despite these difficulties, as evidenced in the global growth of online course offerings, Web-based instruction offers comparative benefits to traditional face-to-face instruction. While there exists a plethora of literature covering experiences and best practices in traditional face-to-face instruction in mathematics, there is a lack of research describing long-term successful experiences in Statistics and OR online courses. Based on the authors’ experiences during the last decade, this chapter aims to share some insights on how to design and develop successful online courses in these knowledge areas.
