The activities based on the analysis of historical texts help to improve the integral education of students, while providing them with additional knowledge about the social and scientific context of the periods involved. Students gain a vision of mathematics not as a final product, but as a useful, human, interdisciplinary and heuristic science which has been developed by trying to answer the questions that humanity has posed throughout time with respect to the world around us. Through our experience as teachers, we have realized that many students have difficulty understanding and handling negative numbers. Accordingly, this paper presents an analysis of some relevant historical texts that deal with negative numbers. On the basis of these texts, classroom activities can be designed with contents related to numbering, which forms part of the numbering and calculation block of the curriculum. In addition, students can work with problem-solving, reasoning and proof processes in these activities, thus addressing connections, communication and representation.

L’activitat que presentem està dissenyada a partir de la justificació geomètrica de la resolució de l’equació de segon grau en el tractat Kit a b al-Mukhtasar f i his a b al-jabr wa’l- muq a bala, i emfasitza el raonament visual, alhora que combina l’àlgebra amb la geometria. L’objectiu d’aquesta activitat és que els alumnes aprenguin conceptes i processos matemàtics a través de la seva història. L’objectiu d’aquesta comunicació és analitzar alguns aspectes rellevants del desenvolupament històric de l’àlgebra prenent com a fil conductor diferents maneres de resoldre l’equació de segon grau al llarg de la història que poden ser emprades a l’aula per ajudar l’alumne a entendre millor els procediments algebraics. Free public teaching of physics in Catalonia started in the early 19th century, even if the interest in experimental physics goes back to the 18th century, where this discipline was discussed at various learned societies. The first chair of Physics in Barcelona was not a university chair but that of the Junta de Comerç de Barcelona (Trade Board of Barcelona), which had several scientific-technical Schools. In fact, at that time, Barcelona had no university, because it had been supressed by King Felipe V after the War of the Spanish Succession (ended in 1714). The promoter of free public teaching of experimental physics was Pere (Pedro) Vieta i Gibert (1779–1856), who was the first professor of that subject both at the School of the Trade Board and at the University of Barcelona, once it was restored in 1842. Vieta, who was a surgeon in the Army, combined his two professions and his interest in meteorology, he having recorded meteorological observations in Barcelona for many years. Many of his students were influential people in the scientific, intellectual, political and economic history of the 19th century in Catalonia and Spain. [Contrib Sci 11:237-247 (2015)]

Dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) is an epipelagic, highly migratory species distributed worldwide in tropical and temperate waters including the Mediterranean Sea. Protein electrophoresis analyses can provide knowledge of the genetic population structure of the species and therefore be used as a tool for fishery management. Areas sampled include the islands of Majorca and Sicily in the western Mediterranean and the Canary Islands in the eastern Atlantic. The results of the protein electrophoresis reveal a level of genetic variability similar to other highly migratory species. Aquest treball va ser el resultat d’una sol·licitud feta per l’Ateneu Barcelonès dins del Projecte Almirall. Portal de pensament i cultura del segle XIX que aquesta entitat impulsava amb el suport del GEHCI, la Biblioteca de Catalunya, l’ETSEIB (UPC), el Consorci de Biblioteques Universitàries de Catalunya i el Ministeri de Cultura. El vaig lliurar l’any 2013. Tanmateix, atès que finalment el Projecte es va haver d’interrompre, diversos treballs de recerca que ja s’havien dut a terme i lliurat van quedar sense poder-se publicar. Per això, i després de parlar amb el responsable del projecte, vaig decidir donar-lo a conèixer. S’ha mantingut el text tal com es va lliurar en el seu moment; és per això que manté el mateix format i estructura, que bàsicament consistia en fer una descripció del subjecte, entitat o objecte estudiat i mostrar la seva projecció social o recepció, bàsicament, a Catalunya. La Societat Filosòfica, com es va autodenominar, va ser una reunió de joves que es va constituir a casa de Josep Oliveró al carrer Monach [carrer d’en Mònec?] 35 de Barcelona el dia 11 de juliol de 1815 i que va ser activa fins l’any 1821. La seva fundació va ser el resultat d’unes converses i canvis d’impressions entre un grup de joves estudiosos, iniciades el 20 de desembre de 1814. Els membres inicials de la Societat Filosòfica de Barcelona eren molt joves alguns eren gairebé adolescents, tenien entre 15 i 20 anys. Entre els promotors i fundadors hi trobem Joaquim Llaró i Vidal (1796-1824), Antoni Monmany i Albornà (1797-1861), Josep Oliveró, Bonaventura Carles Aribau i Farriols (1798-1862), Francesc Puig i Buscall i també Josep Vehil. Havien començat a esbossar els estatuts de la societat el 17 de gener de 1815, estatuts que Monmany va llegir en la sessió inaugural que va presidir com es pot saber gràcies a l’Acta de instalación de la Sociedad Filosófica.

La determinació de la forma i dimensions de la Terra va trobar en la triangulació un mètode pertinent que va establir les bases de la geodèsia. In 1717 the King Philip V established the Royal Guards Headquarters (Cuartel de Guardias de Corps), mirroring the French garde du corps du roi. Intended mainly for noblemen, it was an elitist institution, all its members having the rank of officers and benefitting from huge privileges. Towards the end of 1750 an Academy of Mathematics (Academia de Matemáticas) was created within the Royal Guards Headquarters, under the direction of Captain Pedro Padilla (1724-1807?). This academy was ruled by the same regulations as the Military Academy of Mathematics of Barcelona (1720-1803).1 Attendance was not mandatory; it was only devised for those interested in getting a deeper mathematical knowledge. In fact, rather than its real practical use for the Royal Guards, mathematics was studied as a mark of prestige as Hidalgo (1991) pointed out.
