Magneto-ionics, by which the magnetic properties of a thin layer can be modified through the migration of ions within a liquid or solid electrolyte, is a fast developing research field. This is mainly due to the perspective of energy efficient magnetic devices, in which the magnetization direction is controlled not by a magnetic field or an electrical current, as done in traditional devices, but by an electric field, leading to a considerable reduction of energy consumption. In this work, the interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of a series of Pt/Co/oxide trilayers covered by a ZrO$_2$ layer, acting as a ionic conductor, was finely tuned by a gate voltage at room temperature. The non-volatility and the time evolution of the effect point at oxygen ion migration across the ZrO$_2$ layer as the driving mechanism. A large variation of the PMA is obtained by modifying the degree of oxidation of the cobalt layer with the flux of oxygen ions: the easy magnetization axis can be switched reversibly from in-plane, with an under-oxidized Co, to in-plane, with an over-oxidized Co, passing through an out-of-plane magnetization with maximum PMA. The switching time between the different magnetic states is limited by the oxygen ion drift velocity through the multilayer structure. This was shown to depend exponentially on the applied bias voltage, and could be varied by over 5 orders of magnitude, from several minutes to a few ms. On the other hand, for a fixed gate-voltage, the oxidation of the cobalt layer decreases exponentially as a function of time. This behavior is in agreement with the theoretical model developed by Cabrera and Mott (1949) to explain the growth of very thin oxides at low temperatures. The domain wall dynamics driven by an out of plane magnetic field was measured for a series of magnetic trilayers with different strengths of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). The features of the field-driven domain wall velocity curves strongly depend on the amplitude of the HD field stabilising chiral N\'eel walls. The measured Walker velocity, which in systems with large DMI is maintained after the Walker field giving rise to a velocity plateau up to the Slonczewski field HS, can be easily related to the DMI strength. Yet, when the DMI field HD and the domain wall demagnetising field HDW have comparable values, a careful analysis needs to be done in order to evaluate the impact of the DMI on the domain wall velocity. By means of a one-dimensional model and 2D simulations, we successfully extend this method to explain experimental results to cases where HD and HDW are comparable., Comment: 9 pages, 3 Figures

We study field-driven domain wall (DW) velocities in asymmetric multilayer stacks with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), both experimentally and by micromagnetic simulations. Using magneto-optical Kerr microscopy under intense and nanoseconds-long fields, we show that DWs in these films propagate at velocities up to hundreds of m/s and that, instead of the expected decrease of velocity after the Walker field, a long plateau with constant velocity is observed, before breakdown. Both the maximum speed and the field extent of the velocity plateau strongly depend on the values of the spontaneous magnetization and the DMI strength, as well as on the magnetic anisotropy. Micromagnetic simulations reproduce these features in sufficiently wide strips, even for perfect samples. Spintronics, which is the basis of a low-power, beyond-CMOS technology for computational and memory devices, remains up to now entirely based on critical materials such as Co, heavy metals and rare-earths. Here, we show that Mn4N, a rare-earth free ferrimagnet made of abundant elements, is an exciting candidate for the development of sustainable spintronics devices. Mn4N thin films grown epitaxially on SrTiO3 substrates possess remarkable properties, such as a perpendicular magnetisation, a very high extraordinary Hall angle (2%) and smooth domain walls, at the millimeter scale. Moreover, domain walls can be moved at record speeds by spin polarised currents, in absence of spin-orbit torques. This can be explained by the large efficiency of the adiabatic spin transfer torque, due to the conjunction of a reduced magnetisation and a large spin polarisation. Finally, we show that the application of gate voltages through the SrTiO3 substrates allows modulating the Mn4N coercive field with a large efficiency., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, and supplementary information

Nanoscale magnetic skyrmions are considered as potential information carriers for future spintronics memory and logic devices. Such applications will require the control of their local creation and annihilation, which involves so far solutions that are either energy consuming or difficult to integrate. Here we demonstrate the control of skyrmion bubbles nucleation and annihilation using electric field gating, an easily integrable and potentially energetically efficient solution. We present a detailed stability diagram of the skyrmion bubbles in a Pt/Co/oxide trilayer and show that their stability can be controlled via an applied electric field. An analytical bubble model, with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction imbedded in the domain wall energy, account for the observed electrical skyrmion switching effect. This allows us to unveil the origin of the electrical control of skyrmions stability and to show that both magnetic dipolar interaction and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction play an important role in the skyrmion bubble stabilization.

We carried out measurements of domain wall (DW) velocities driven by magnetic field pulses in symmetric Pt/Co/Pt and asymmetric Pt/Co/AlOx, Pt/Co/GdOx and Pt/Co/Gd trilayers with ultrathin Co layers and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. In agreement with theoretical models, the maximum observed velocity is much larger in the asymmetric samples, where the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) stabilises chiral N\'eel walls, than in the symmetric stack. In addition, in Pt/Co/Gd very large DW speeds (up to 600 m/s) are obtained, 2.5 times larger than in samples with oxidised Gd. Magnetic measurements reveal that this may be explained by the anti-parallel coupling between the magnetic moments of Gd and Co at the Gd/Co interface, leading to a decrease of the total magnetisation. In quantitative agreement with analytical models, in all samples the maximum observed DW speed scales as D=Ms, where D is the strength of the DMI and Ms the spontaneous magnetisation.

Magnetic domain walls (DWs) in nanostructures are low-dimensional objects that separate regions with uniform magnetisation. Since they can have different shapes and widths, DWs are an exciting playground for fundamental research, and became in the past years the subject of intense works, mainly focused on controlling, manipulating, and moving their internal magnetic configuration. In nanostrips with in-plane magnetisation, two DWs have been identified: in thin and narrow strips, transverse walls are energetically favored, while in thicker and wider strips vortex walls have lower energy. The associated phase diagram is now well established and often used to predict the low-energy magnetic configuration in a given magnetic nanostructure. However, besides the transverse and vortex walls, we find numerically that another type of wall exists in permalloy nanostrips. This third type of DW is characterised by a three-dimensional, flux closure micromagnetic structure with an unusual length and three internal degrees of freedom. Magnetic imaging on lithographically-patterned permalloy nanostrips confirms these predictions and shows that these DWs can be moved with an external magnetic field of about 1mT. We have carried out measurements of domain wall dynamics in a Pt/Co/GdOx(t) wedge sample with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. When driven by an easy-axis field Hz in the presence of an in-plane field Hx, the domain wall expansion along x is anisotropic, as expected for samples presenting Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. In the creep regime, the sign and the value of the domain wall velocity asymmetry changes along the wedge. We show that in our samples the domain wall speed vs. Hx curves in the creep regime cannot be explained simply in terms of the variation of the domain wall energy with Hx, as suggested by previous works. For this reason the strength and the sign of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) cannot be extracted from these measurements. To obtain reliable information on the DMI strength using magnetic field-induced domain wall dynamics, measurements have been performed with high fields, bringing the DW close to the flow regime of propagation. We show that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) can lead to a tilting of the domain wall (DW) surface in perpendicularly magnetized magnetic nanotracks when DW dynamics is driven by an easy axis magnetic field or a spin polarized current. The DW tilting affects the DW dynamics for large DMI and the tilting relaxation time can be very large as it scales with the square of the track width. The results are well explained by an analytical model based on a Lagrangian approach where the DMI and the DW tilting are included. We propose a simple way to estimate the DMI in a magnetic multilayers by measuring the dependence of the DW tilt angle on a transverse static magnetic field. Our results shed light on the current induced DW tilting observed recently in Co/Ni multilayers with inversion asymmetry, and further support the presence of DMI in these systems., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, 1 Supplementary Materials

The electric (E) field control of magnetic properties opens the prospects of an alternative to magnetic field or electric current activation to control magnetization. Multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) have proven to be particularly sensitive to the influence of an E-field due to the interfacial origin of their anisotropy. In these systems, E-field effects have been recently applied to assist magnetization switching and control domain wall (DW) velocity. Here we report on two new applications of the E-field in a similar material : controlling DW nucleation and stopping DW propagation at the edge of the electrode.

Current-induced domain wall (DW) displacements in an array of ultrathin Pt/Co/AlOx wires with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy have been directly observed by wide field Kerr microscopy. DWs in all wires in the array were driven simultaneously and their displacement on the micrometer-scale was controlled by the current pulse amplitude and duration. At the lower current densities where DW displacements were observed (j less than or equal to 1.5 x 10^12 A/m^2), the DW motion obeys a creep law. At higher current density (j = 1.8 x 10^12 A/m^2), zero-field average DW velocities up to 130 +/- 10 m/s were recorded., Comment: Minor changes to Fig. 1(b) and text, correcting for the fact that domain walls were subsequently found to move counter to the electron flow.
