1. Multidisciplinary Observing in the World Ocean’s Oxygen Minimum Zone Regions: From Climate to Fish — The VOICE Initiative

Abstract

Multidisciplinary ocean observing activities provide critical ocean information to satisfy ever-changing socioeconomic needs and require coordinated implementation. The upper oxycline (transition between high and low oxygen waters) is fundamentally important for the ecosystem structure and can be a useful proxy for multiple observing objectives connected to eastern boundary systems (EBSs) that neighbor oxygen minimum zones (OMZs). The variability of the oxycline and its impact on the ecosystem (VOICE) initiative demonstrates how societal benefits drive the need for integration and optimization of biological, biogeochemical, and physical components of regional ocean observing related to EBS. In liaison with the Global Ocean Oxygen Network, VOICE creates a roadmap toward observation-model syntheses for a comprehensive understanding of selected oxycline-dependent objectives. Local to global effects, such as habitat compression or deoxygenation trends, prompt for comprehensive observing of the oxycline on various space and time scales, and for an increased awareness of its impact on ecosystem services. Building on the Framework for Ocean Observing (FOO), we present a first readiness level assessment for ocean observing of the oxycline in EBS. This was to determine current ocean observing design and future needs in EBS regions (e.g., the California Current System, the Equatorial Eastern Pacific off Ecuador, the Peru–Chile Current system, the Northern Benguela off Namibia, etc.) building on the FOO strategy. We choose regional champions to assess the ocean observing design elements proposed in the FOO, namely, requirement processes, coordination of observational elements, and data management and information products and the related best practices. The readiness level for the FOO elements was derived for each EBS through a similar and very general ad hoc questionnaire. Despite some weaknesses in the questionnaire design and its completion, an assessment was achievable. We found that fisheries and ecosystem management are a societal requirement for all regions, but maturity levels of observational elements and data management and information products differ substantially. Identification of relevant stakeholders, developing strategies for readiness level improvements, and building and sustaining infrastructure capacity to implement these strategies are fundamental milestones for the VOICE initiative over the next 2–5 years and beyond.

4. Coral settlement and recruitment are negatively related to reef fish trait diversity

Abstract

The process of coral recruitment is crucial to the functioning of coral reef ecosystems and recovery of coral assemblages following disturbances. Fishes can be key mediators of this process by removing benthic competitors like algae, but their foraging impacts are capable of being facilitative or harmful to coral recruits depending on species traits. Reef fish assemblages are highly diverse in foraging strategies, and the relationship between this diversity with coral settlement and recruitment success remains poorly understood. Here, we investigate how foraging trait diversity of reef fish assemblages covaries with coral settlement and recruitment success across multiple sites at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef. Using a multi-model inference approach incorporating six metrics of fish assemblage foraging diversity (foraging rates, trait richness, trait evenness, trait divergence, herbivore abundance, and sessile invertivore abundance), we found that herbivore abundance was positively related to both coral settlement and recruitment success. However, the correlation with herbivore abundance was not as strong in comparison with foraging trait diversity metrics. Coral settlement and recruitment exhibited a negative relationship with foraging trait diversity, especially with trait divergence and richness in settlement. Our findings provide further evidence that fish play a role in making benthic habitats more conducive for coral settlement and recruitment. Because of their ability to shape the reef benthos, the variation of fish biodiversity is likely to contribute to spatially uneven patterns of coral recruitment and reef recovery.

5. Experiencia piloto con el uso extendido de un anticonceptivo oral combinado de baja dosis de estrógeno

Abstract

Objetivo: Evaluar en una experiencia piloto la aceptabilidad y bienestar de la usuaria, después de un periodo de 12 meses de un anticonceptivo hormonal combinado oral de baja dosis estrogénica, con modalidad de uso extendido de 84 píldoras activas consecutivas, seguidas de 7 días de placebo. Método: Se incorporan 25 mujeres voluntarias que usan una combinación de 20 ug de etinilestradiol + 3 mg de drospirenona, con un tiempo de uso de 12 meses. En calendario de registro diario se consignan los días de sangrado o goteo genital así como todo tipo de fármaco ingerido. Al término de los 12 meses se efectúa una encuesta respecto al grado de satisfacción con la posología recibida. Resultados: 13 usuarias (52%) cumplen los 12 meses de uso. Todas ellas manifiestan un alto grado de conformidad, destacando las ventajas de presentar periodos menstruales ocasionales, mejoría marcada en la sintomatología compatible con el síndrome de tensión premenstrual con el consiguiente incremento del bienestar general. Siete usuarias (28%) no terminan el estudio por razones médicas, siendo 6 de estas por alteraciones de los flujos rojos y en 5 casos (20%) se producen retiros no médicos. Conclusión: Esta experiencia, que es la primera con la formulación descrita, confirma en un porcentaje de usuarias las bondades adicionales reportadas en las experiencias previas con otros productos similares, respecto al uso extendido de anticoncepción hormonal oral en un grupo de mujeres que deseaban espaciar sus periodos menstruales.Objetives: A pilot study designed in order to know about the acceptability of an oral combined contraceptive pill, with low estrogen dose used in an extended way of 84 consecutive days, followed by 7 days of no pills ingestion during a scheduled follow up of 1 year. Methods: 25 volunteers women were recruited among those which wants to use oral combined contraceptive pills and who accepted this extended way of use. Combined contraceptive pills contains each 20 ug of ethinylestradiol plus 3 mg of drosperinone. At admission women were provided with menstrual diary cards in order to check all bleeding days plus any extra pharmaceutical compound received. At the end of the 12 months follow up an interview was done in order to know women experiences and acceptability of this extended way of use. Results: 52% of women end the study at the scheduled 12 months use. All of them feel that the main advantages of these extended way of use were to have few menstrual periods and improving premenstrual symtomatology with better quality of life. 7 women (28%) did not finish the study because of medical reasons being due in 6 of these for bleeding disturbances. Conclusions: This report is pioneer with the use this hormone combination in this extended type way of use. Results confirm previous positive reports experiences using another similar hormonal compounds with this extended way of use in women who want to reduce the interval of their menstrual periods.

Resultados de una encuesta con preguntas específicas contestadas por el 97,6% de los ginecoobstetras del Departamento de Obstetricia y Ginecología de Clínica Alemana de Santiago, para establecer un diagnóstico de situación sobre el uso de terapia de reemplazo hormonal (TRH). Se enfatizan preguntas sobre la aceptabilidad de las futuras usuarias tanto de TRH como de terapias alternativas; sobre la percepción de los eventuales beneficios desde un punto de vista general, o específicamente cardiovascular; así como las preferencias de hormonas a usar y predilecciones por las vías de administración; las asociaciones del uso y cáncer mamario; las variaciones sobre el uso de TRH pos publicación del Women Health Iniciative Study; los factores que inciden en la discontinuación del tratamiento; la importancia de edad para el uso, factores relacionados con los costos de las terapias y la preferencia o no de productos originales de investigación. Conclusión: Es necesaria una mayor capacitación sobre el uso de TRH en la actualidad tanto de los ginecólogos especialistas en climaterio y menopausia, como de los que no lo son. A falta de información concluyente sobre esta temática en el momento actual se sugiere que el manejo de este tipo de pacientes sea efectuado por los equipos médicos especializadosIn orderto set a diagnosis about the use of hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) in peri and postmenopau-sal women by the obstetricians and gynecologists members of our staff, we did a survey that was answered by 97.6% of them. Questions about the future patients desire related to use of HRT or use of natural or alternative medicines were included. There were also questions related to the "risk-benefit" relationship on the use of HRT from an overall point of view as well as from a cardiovascular point of view. The preference of medical doctors (MD) on choice of hormone type in HRT use, in respect to the administration, were also asked. Among others, questions were asked in order to know MD opinions on the relationship with breast cáncer, the changes on acceptability use after the WHI study, reasons for the treatment discontinuation, the importance of women's age and the cost of pharmaceuticals producís on HRT use. Conclusions: Are focused on a need of a solid educational program on use of HRT addressed to gynecologists, as well as to general practitioners, cardiologists, oncologists and others related. Educational programs are also quite beneficial to future users as well as women that are currently under treatment. In the absence of conclusive information available at the present moment, we advise that patients considering HRT should seek the coun-sel of medical teams whose specialties include menopause

13. Climate-driven shift in coral morphological structure predicts decline of juvenile reef fishes.

Rapid intensification of environmental disturbances has sparked widespread decline and compositional shifts in foundation species in ecosystems worldwide. Now, an emergent challenge is to understand the consequences of shifts and losses in such habitat-forming species for associated communities and ecosystem processes. Recently, consecutive coral bleaching events shifted the morphological makeup of habitat-forming coral assemblages on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Considering the disparity of coral morphological growth forms in shelter provision for reef fishes, we investigated how shifts in the morphological structure of coral assemblages affect the abundance of juvenile and adult reef fishes. We used a temporal dataset from shallow reefs in the northern GBR to estimate coral convexity (a fine-scale quantitative morphological trait) and two widely used coral habitat descriptors (coral cover and reef rugosity) for disentangling the effects of coral morphology on reef fish assemblages. Changes in coral convexity, rather than live coral cover or reef rugosity, disproportionately affected juvenile reef fishes when compared to adults, and explained more than 20% of juvenile decline. The magnitude of this effect varied by fish body size with juveniles of small-bodied species showing higher vulnerability to changes in coral morphology. Our findings suggest that continued large-scale shifts in the relative abundance of morphological groups within coral assemblages are likely to affect population replenishment and dynamics of future reef fish communities. The different responses of juvenile and adult fishes according to habitat descriptors indicate that focusing on coarse-scale metrics alone may mask fine-scale ecological responses that are key to understand ecosystem functioning and resilience. Nonetheless, quantifying coral morphological traits may contribute to forecasting the structure of reef fish communities on novel reef ecosystems shaped by climate change.

16. Seasonal variability of the southern tip of the oxygen minimum zone in the Eastern South Pacific (30 degrees - 38 degrees S) : a modeling study

Abstract

We investigate the seasonal variability of the southern tip (30 degrees-38 degrees S) of the eastern South Pacific oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) based on a high horizontal resolution (1/12 degrees) regional coupled physical-biogeochemical model simulation. The simulation is validated by available in situ observations and the OMZ seasonal variability is documented. The model OMZ, bounded by the contour of 45 mu M, occupies a large volume (4.5x10(4) km(3)) during the beginning of austral winter and a minimum (3.5x10(4) km(3)) at the end of spring, just 1 and 2 months after the southward transport of the Peru-Chile Undercurrent (PCUC) is maximum and minimum, respectively. We showed that the PCUC significantly impacts the alongshore advection of dissolved oxygen (DO) modulating the OMZ seasonal variability. However, zonal transport of DO by meridionally alternating zonal jets and mesoscale eddy fluxes play also a major role in the seasonal and spatial variability of the OMZ. Consistently, a DO budget analysis reveals a significant contribution of advection terms to the rate of change of DO and the prominence of mesoscale variability within the seasonal cycle of these terms. Biogeochemical processes and horizontal and vertical mixing, associated with subgrid scale processes, play only a secondary role in the OMZ seasonal cycle. Overall, our study illustrates the interplay of mean and (mesoscale) eddy-induced transports of DO in shaping the OMZ and its seasonal cycle off Central Chile.

Abstract

Off the coast of central Chile, subsurface anticyclonic eddies are a salient feature of the oceanic circulation, transporting a significant fraction of coastal water that is rich in nutrients and poor in dissolved oxygen offshore. In this study, the formation mechanism of these eddies is analyzed through a high-resolution (similar to 0.3 km) and low-resolution (similar to 3 km) oceanic model that realistically simulate the regional mean circulation, including the Peru-Chile Undercurrent (PCUC). An analysis of the vorticity and eddy kinetic energy in both simulations indicated that the subsurface eddies can be triggered through a combination of processes that are associated with instabilities of the PCUC. In the high-resolution simulation, we observed that the interaction between the PCUC and topographic slope generates anticyclonic vorticity and potential vorticity close to zero in the bottom boundary layer. The separation of the undercurrent from the slope favors the intensification of anticyclonic vorticity. It reaches magnitudes that are larger than the planetary vorticity while kinetic energy is converted from the PCUC to the eddy flow. These processes set the necessary conditions for the development of centrifugal instabilities, which can form submesoscale structures. The coalescence of submesoscale structures generates a subsurface anticyclonic mesoscale eddy. In the low-resolution simulations (>3 km) centrifugal instabilities are not simulated, and the barotropic conversion of the mean kinetic energy into eddy kinetic energy appears as the main process of eddy formation. We showed that the vertical structure of these eddies is sensitive to the spatial resolution of the model. Plain Language Summary Subsurface mesoscale eddies are swirling masses of water observed below the surface layer of the ocean (around 100- to 400-m depth). Off central Chile, these eddies have typical diameters of few tens of kilometers. They are formed near the coast, where an intense subsurface poleward flow, namely, the Peru-Chile Undercurrent (PCUC), interacts with the continental slope and the seaward border of the continental shelf. These eddies can travel long distances, toward the open ocean, transporting coastal waters with low dissolved oxygen and high nutrient concentrations and impacting the regional marine ecosystems. We use a high-resolution numerical oceanic model (similar to 0.3 km) to analyze the formation of an eddy near 33.5 degrees S off Chile. We showed that the eddy formation process requires the undercurrent to destabilize and detach from the coast, promoting the generation of submesoscale eddies (diameters -10 km). This means that in regions of eddy formation, initially, the PCUC drifts offshore transferring momentum to submesoscale eddies. Later on, these eddies begin to coalesce to form an eddy with larger dimensions. We also showed that the spatial resolution of the numerical model can impact the mechanism of transfer of momentum and the vertical structure of eddies.

Abstract

Resumen La obra de Hugo Correa goza hoy de un amplio reconocimiento, nacional e internacional, y es considerada una pieza clave en el desarrollo de la ciencia ficción chilena. Además de su insigne novela Los altísimos, la obra Los títeres suscitó un significativo interés por el modo en que sus cuentos abordaron los efectos del progreso y la industrialización en la subjetividad de una época. El presente trabajo buscará examinar, por una parte, el modo en que el clásico motivo del doble es revisitado bajo los códigos de la ciencia ficción y, por la otra, el modo en que títeres, sosias y dobles desafían la alteridad, dando cuenta de la conjugación de recursos literarios y tópicos relativos a los saberes psi. A partir de este análisis será posible sostener que, si bien los cuentos de Los Títeres problematizan las relaciones del ser humano con el futuro tecnológico, al mismo tiempo, sus personajes y sus tramas evidencian la intervención de principios psicológicos y conceptos psicopatológicos.

19. Síndrome de Sweet en Pediatría. A proposito de un caso

Abstract

Resumen: Introducción: El Síndrome de Sweet es una dermatosis muy infrecuente en pediatría, de patogenia desconocida, caracterizado clínicamente por fiebre, neutrofilia, placas solevantadas y dolorosas en piel de cara, cuello y extremidades e histológicamente por infiltración dérmica de neutrófílos. Objeti vo: Presentación de un caso clínico de Síndrome de Sweet en paciente pediátrico. Caso clínico: Prees colar femenino de 3 años, portador de cromosomopatia compleja 46XX add(8). Consultó por cuadro clínico de 7 días de evolución caracterizado por placas y ampollas localizadas en dorso y posterior mente en extremidades, asociado a fiebre alta, sin respuesta a tratamiento antibiótico indicado por sospecha de impetigo ampollar. Al examen físico presentaba múltiples placas eritemato-violáceas, con centro ampollar en dorso, extremidades superiores e inferiores, junto a placas y nódulos eritematosos en brazo y muslo izquierdo. En los exámenes de laboratorio destacó leucocitosis con neutrofilia (RAN 45954/mm3) y PCR elevada (347 mg/L). Se realizó biopsia de lesiones cutáneas con hallazgos histopatológicos compatibles con Síndrome de Sweet. Se indicó tratamiento con prednisona 1 mg/ kg/día, con buena respuesta clínica. A las 2 semanas de tratamiento presentaba placas costrosas de menor tamaño, sin lesiones ampollares. Conclusiones: El síndrome de Sweet corresponde a una der matosis infrecuente en pediatría, por lo que se debe tener un alto índice de sospecha ante la presencia de fiebre asociado a lesiones cutáneas persistentes. Si bien la mayoría de los casos son idiopáticos, se debe realizar el tamizaje de condiciones asociadas, principalmente de trastornos proliferativos, infec ciones e inmunodeficiencias. Abstract: Introduction: Sweet’s syndrome is a very rare dermatosis in pediatrics, of unknown pathogenesis, clinically characterized by fever, neutrophilia, raised and painful plaques on the skin of the face, neck, and limbs, and histologically by dermal infiltration of neutrophils. Objective: To present a clinical case of Sweet Syndrome in a pediatric patient. Clinical case: 3-years-old female child, with history of complex chromosomopathy 46XX add(8), with a 7-day history of plaques and blisters on the back and later also on the limbs, associated with high fever, without response to antibiotic treatment pres cribed due to suspicion of bullous impetigo. Physical examination showed multiple erythematous- violaceous plaques, with bullous center on the back, upper and lower limbs, along with plaques and erythematous nodules on the left arm and thigh. Laboratory tests showed leukocytosis with neutro philia (absolute neutrophil count 45954/mm3) and elevated CRP (347 mg/L). Biopsy of skin lesions reported histopathological findings compatible with Sweet’s Syndrome. Treatment with prednisone 1 mg/kg/day was indicated with good clinical response. After two weeks of treatment, she presented crusty plaques of smaller size, without bullous lesions. Conclusions: Sweet’s syndrome is an uncom mon dermatosis in pediatrics, therefore, a high index of suspicion should be held in the presence of fever associated with persistent skin lesions. While most cases are idiopathic, screening for associated conditions, mainly proliferative disorders, infections, and immunodeficiencies must be performed.

Abstract

Introduccion: El Sindrome de Sweet es una enfermedad infrecuente en pediatria, de patogenia desconocida, caracterizado clinicamente por fiebre, neutrofilia, placas solevantadas dolorosas en cara, cuello y extremidades e histologicamente por infiltracion dermica de neutrofilos. Objetivo: Presentacion del primer caso clinico de Sindrome de Sweet en pediatria en Chile. Caso clinico: Preescolar de 3 anos, sexo femenino, con antecedentes de cromosomopatia compleja. Consulta por cuadro clinico de 7 dias de evolucion caracterizado por lesiones papulares y vesiculares en dorso que se extienden a extremidades, se asocian a fiebre alta y no responden a tratamiento antibiotico por sospecha de impetigo ampollar. Al examen fisico se observan multiples ampollas y algunas ulceras costrosas en dorso, extremidades superiores e inferiores, papulas y nodulos eritematosos en brazo y muslo izquierdo. En examenes de laboratorio destaca leucocitosis con neutrofilia y PCR elevada. Se realiza biopsia cutanea de lesiones que informa hiperplasia psoriasiforme de epidermis, espongiosis y edema papilar. Infiltrado inflamatorio perivascular con neutrofilos polimorfonucleares en dermis profunda y subcutaneo. Los hallazgos histopatologicos son compatibles con Sindrome de Sweet. Se indica tratamiento corticoesteroidal con prednisona 1 mg/kg/dia, con buena respuesta clinica, sin aparicion de nuevas lesiones y ausencia de fiebre. Al control en 1 semana presenta placas y ulceras costrosas de menor tamano y cicatrices. Conclusiones: El sindrome de Sweet corresponde a una dermatosis poco comun en pediatria. Si bien la mayoria de los casos son idiopaticos, se debe tener un indice de sospecha elevado y realizar el tamizaje de posibles condiciones asociadas.

Abstract

Motivation: The BioTIME database contains raw data on species identities and abundances in ecological assemblages through time. These data enable users to calculate temporal trends in biodiversity within and amongst assemblages using a broad range of metrics. BioTIME is being developed as a community‐led open‐source database of biodiversity time series. Our goal is to accelerate and facilitate quantitative analysis of temporal patterns of biodiversity in the Anthropocene. Main types of variables included: The database contains 8,777,413 species abundance records, from assemblages consistently sampled for a minimum of 2 years, which need not necessarily be consecutive. In addition, the database contains metadata relating to sampling methodology and contextual information about each record. Spatial location and grain: BioTIME is a global database of 547,161 unique sampling locations spanning the marine, freshwater and terrestrial realms. Grain size varies across datasets from 0.0000000158 km² (158 cm²) to 100 km² (1,000,000,000,000 cm²). Time period and grain: BioTIME records span from 1874 to 2016. The minimal temporal grain across all datasets in BioTIME is a year. Major taxa and level of measurement: BioTIME includes data from 44,440 species across the plant and animal kingdoms, ranging from plants, plankton and terrestrial invertebrates to small and large vertebrates. Software format: .csv and .SQL.

Abstract

This Australian benthic data set (BENTHOZ-2015) consists of an expert-annotated set of georeferenced benthic images and associated sensor data, captured by an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) around Australia. This type of data is of interest to marine scientists studying benthic habitats and organisms. AUVs collect georeferenced images over an area with consistent illumination and altitude, and make it possible to generate broad scale, photo-realistic 3D maps. Marine scientists then typically spend several minutes on each of thousands of images, labeling substratum type and biota at a subset of points. Labels from four Australian research groups were combined using the CATAMI classification scheme, a hierarchical classification scheme based on taxonomy and morphology for scoring marine imagery. This data set consists of 407,968 expert labeled points from around the Australian coast, with associated images, geolocation and other sensor data. The robotic surveys that collected this data form part of Australia's Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) ongoing benthic monitoring program. There is reuse potential in marine science, robotics, and computer vision research.

Resultados de una encuesta con preguntas específicas contestadas por el 97,6% de los ginecoobstetras del Departamento de Obstetricia y Ginecología de Clínica Alemana de Santiago, para establecer un diagnóstico de situación sobre el uso de terapia de reemplazo hormonal (TRH). Se enfatizan preguntas sobre la aceptabilidad de las futuras usuarias tanto de TRH como de terapias alternativas; sobre la percepción de los eventuales beneficios desde un punto de vista general, o específicamente cardiovascular; así como las preferencias de hormonas a usar y predilecciones por las vías de administración; las asociaciones del uso y cáncer mamario; las variaciones sobre el uso de TRH pos publicación del Women Health Iniciative Study; los factores que inciden en la discontinuación del tratamiento; la importancia de edad para el uso, factores relacionados con los costos de las terapias y la preferencia o no de productos originales de investigación. Conclusión: Es necesaria una mayor capacitación sobre el uso de TRH en la actualidad tanto de los ginecólogos especialistas en climaterio y menopausia, como de los que no lo son. A falta de información concluyente sobre esta temática en el momento actual se sugiere que el manejo de este tipo de pacientes sea efectuado por los equipos médicos especializados In orderto set a diagnosis about the use of hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) in peri and postmenopau-sal women by the obstetricians and gynecologists members of our staff, we did a survey that was answered by 97.6% of them. Questions about the future patients desire related to use of HRT or use of natural or alternative medicines were included. There were also questions related to the "risk-benefit" relationship on the use of HRT from an overall point of view as well as from a cardiovascular point of view. The preference of medical doctors (MD) on choice of hormone type in HRT use, in respect to the administration, were also asked. Among others, questions were asked in order to know MD opinions on the relationship with breast cáncer, the changes on acceptability use after the WHI study, reasons for the treatment discontinuation, the importance of women's age and the cost of pharmaceuticals producís on HRT use. Conclusions: Are focused on a need of a solid educational program on use of HRT addressed to gynecologists, as well as to general practitioners, cardiologists, oncologists and others related. Educational programs are also quite beneficial to future users as well as women that are currently under treatment. In the absence of conclusive information available at the present moment, we advise that patients considering HRT should seek the coun-sel of medical teams whose specialties include menopause

36. Vertical energy flux at ENSO time scales in the subthermocline of the Southeastern Pacific.

Abstract

The question of how energy is redistributed in the ocean has renewed the interest for the processes leading to midlatitude subthermocline variability at low frequency. Here we investigate a process that has been disregarded although potentially relevant for climatic studies dealing with the planetary energy budget. The focus is on the Southeastern Pacific where an efficient oceanic teleconnection takes place, linking the remote surface equatorial momentum forcing with the subthermocline through the vertical propagation of low-frequency long-wavelength extratropical Rossby waves (ETRW). A high-resolution model is used to document the vertical energy flux associated with ETRW at interannual to decadal time scales. The analysis of a long-term (1958-2008) simulation reveals that the vertical energy flux can be interpreted to a large extent as resulting from the coastally forced ETRW as far south as 35°S, so that heat content variability can be predicted along theoretical trajectories originating from the coast below the thermocline. It is shown that the vertical energy flux associated with the El Niño Southern Oscillation forms beams below the thermocline that account for a large fraction of the total vertical energy flux at interannual time scales. Extreme El Niño events are the dominant contributor to this flux, which is hardly impacted by mesoscale activity. The energy beams experience a dissipation processes in the ocean below 1000 m that is interpreted as resulting from vertical turbulent diffusion. Our results suggest that the ETRW at ENSO time scales are strongly dissipated at the surface but still can modulate the heat content in the deep ocean of the Southeastern Pacific. 37. SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL VARIABILITY OF THERMAL FRONTS OFF CENTRAL CHILE (33-40S)

Abstract

During the upwelling season along the coast off central Chile (33-40S), cold upwelled water can be easily distinguished from warm oceanic water using satellite infrared images. The boundary between cold and warm surface waters is a relatively narrow region with large horizontal gradients, denominated upwelling front, which is also clearly visible in satellite images. Here, using daily NOAA satellite infrared images from the period 1998-2000, we described the spatial distribution of mesoscale features related to upwelling fronts. Together with infrared data, we use SeaWiFS's color images to explore the relationship between Chlorophyll concentration and thermal upwelling fronts. Our results show that thermal fronts have maximum intensities (0.2C/km) in spring and summer and they are typically located between 30 and 300 km off the coast. The offshore extension of the upwelling front was usually larger between 35-37S, related to the presence of a large anticyclonic eddy in this region during the warm season. In general, chlorophyll was well correlated (inversely) to SST showing similar offshore variability scale and covariance in mesoscale features like eddies and filaments

Abstract

Monitoring marine habitats and biodiversity is critical for understanding ecological processes, conserving natural resources, and achieving ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM). Here, we describe the application of autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) technologyto conduct ongoing monitoring of benthic habitats at two key locations in Western Australia. Benthic assemblages on rocky reefs were sampled with an AUV, which captured .200 000 geo-referenced images. Surveys were designed to obtain 100% coverage of25 × 25 m patches of benthic habitat. In 2010, multiple patches were surveyed at 15–40-m depths at three reference sites at the Houtman Abrolhos Islands and at six reference sites at Rottnest Island. The following year, repeat surveys of the same geo-referenced patches were conducted. Benthic assemblages at the Houtman Abrolhos Islands were varied in that one reference site was dominated by hard corals, whereas the other two were macroalgae dominated. Conversely, assemblages at Rottnest Island were dominated by thekelp Ecklonia radiata. The AUV resurveyed each patch with high precision and demonstrated adequate power to detect change. Repeated observations at the reference sites will track natural variability in benthic habitat structure, which in turn will facilitate the detection of ecological change and ultimately feed back into EBFM processes.
