Abstract

Interprofessional education within clinical teaching sites is a key part of training for pre-professional students. However, the necessary characteristics of these interprofessional clinical teaching sites is unclear. We developed a tool, the Interprofessional Education Site Readiness, or InSITE, tool, for individuals at a site to use as a self-assessment of the site's current readiness for providing interprofessional education. The tool progressed through six stages of development, collecting evidence for validity and reliability, resulting in a final tool with 23 questions distributed across five domains. Data from 94 respondents from a variety of national sites were used for the item analysis showing acceptable item-to-total correlations. Internal reliability testing gave a Cronbach's coefficient alpha of more than 0.70 for each group level comparison. Known groups validity testing provides strong evidence for its responsiveness in detecting differences in sites where IPE is implemented. The results of the testing lead us to conclude that the InSITE tool has acceptable psychometric properties. Additionally, we discovered that the process in which the InSITE tool was used demonstrated that it can facilitate learning in practice for the health professionals and can help make implicit, informal workplace learning and the hidden curriculum explicit. 19. Leveraging Learning Technologies for Collaborative Writing in an Online Pharmacotherapy Course

Abstract

The purpose of this project was to evaluate the development and delivery of a hypertext case scenario document to be used as the capstone assessment tool for doctoral-level physical therapy students. The integration of Web-based collaborative tools (PBworks[TM] and Google Sites[TM]) allowed students in this all-online course to apply their pharmacotherapy knowledge in a physical therapy patient scenario, while working with colleagues to determine the best route of patient care. Students developed digital writing skills imperative to a patient-centered, collaborative health-care field, and practiced evidence-based patient care. The findings demonstrate that the implementation of collaborative digital writing with a hypertext document case scenario assessment as the primary assessment tool in this online pharmacotherapy course delivered to doctoral-level physical therapy students is a feasible and effective educational strategy. 20. Exploring the Use of a Social Network to Facilitate and Integrate Long-Term Interprofessional Educational Experiences

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of implementing interprofessional education to students from six health professional programs through use of an online social networking platform. Specifically, three pedagogical models (Minimally Structured, Facilitated, Highly Structured) were evaluated for impact on student engagement, attitude, professional identity and satisfaction. This research attempted to create a participatory culture and an environment that fostered participation by all members, but also allowed members to interact with the environment in a personal way, acknowledging that the environment is different for each learner. An ecological perspective of learning and strategies for fostering collaborative engagement guided this research, both in the design of the Ning learning environment and in the development of learning goals. Students from all six University of Minnesota Academic Health Center (AHC) colleges (Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine, and Public Health) were represented in each pedagogical structure group and participated within their assigned group for 15 weeks. Students reported that Ning was a simple tool to use and a suitable virtual gathering place. Results of the quantitative measures (interprofessional perception and attitude survey tools, number of postings or self-reported time on the website) showed no significant differences between participants based on pedagogical group. Despite the lack of significance detected with the quantitative measures, qualitative measures, including content and discourse analysis of student postings and focus group transcripts, showed dramatic differences and suggest that the pedagogical structure did impact student engagement and effectiveness in fostering interprofessional awareness. This study found that students want meaningful interprofessional education opportunities, but logistical barriers have prevented all-encompassing, long-term experiences from being offered to students. Utilizing a social networking website, such as Ning, may be a feasible and effective strategy for making this long-standing goal a reality. As the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) have published the Core Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) as a standard for new pharmacy graduates, mapping these competencies to the American Society of Health‐System Pharmacists (ASHP) PGY1 pharmacy residency standards may allow for progression tracking. Methods: Using group consensus, the guidance documents from the ASHP PGY1 pharmacy residency standards and the AACP Core EPAs for new pharmacy graduates were compared and mapped. Results: The ASHP PGY1 pharmacy residency standards included one additional tier (ie, goals) when evaluating structural levels compared with the AACP Core EPAs. All of the 15 AACP Core EPAs mapped to at least one ASHP educational objective. In addition, all of the ASHP educational objectives mapped to the Core EPAs except for one objective in Patient Care and four in the Leadership and Management competency areas. Discussion: With only a slight difference in structure and a small gap between ASHP education objectives and AACP EPAs, tracking of progression from new pharmacy graduate to postgraduate pharmacy resident may be possible.
