Piton de la Fournaise is an active shield volcano located in the eastern area of the Réunion Island (Indian Ocean) whose activity is characterized by effusive and explosive episodes with the emission of scarcely differentiated magmas with mostly tholeiitic affinity. The presently active edifice has grown within the Enclos Fouqué caldera, a polylobate plain bounded on its western side by the 80–200 m high Bellecombe vertical cliffs. This escarpment exposes a vertical sequence of 12 lava flows cut by a dike with an age > 5.5 kyrs. In this work, the Bellecombe products were investigated by X-ray fluorescence, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy, a Scanning Electron Microscope and X-ray computed microtomography in order to characterize the evolution over time of the magmatic system feeding the eruptive activity prior to the Enclos Fouqué caldera collapse. The results indicate that lava flows share a geochemical affinity with the two main series documented at Piton de la Fournaise, namely, Steady State Basalts (SSB) at the bottom and top of the sequence and Abnormal basalt Group (AbG) with different degrees of differentiation in the central part. The emission of these two different products in both a restricted area and timespan testifies to the dynamic activity of the plumbing system, capable of shifting rapidly from central to eccentric activity in the recent past. Environmental parameters drive seasonal soil CO2 efflux toward the atmosphere. However, their influence is not fully understood in contexts of high CO2 fluxes where CO2 accumulates in the subsurface. A prime example are volcanoes subject to continuous CO2 diffuse degassing rising from deep magmatic reservoirs, through the subsurface and up to the atmosphere. For many of these volcanoes where soil CO2 is monitored, a seasonal influence of the atmosphere and water table is observed but not characterized. Here, we compare variations of air temperature, atmospheric pressure, rainfall and water table level with near‐surface soil CO2 concentration by performing a time‐lagged detrended cross‐correlation analysis on years‐long time series from the volcanoes of Piton de la Fournaise and Mayotte. At Piton de la Fournaise, soil CO2 variations correlate best with air temperature variations (0.81) and water table variations (0.74). In Mayotte, soil CO2 variations correlate best with atmospheric pressure variations (−0.95). We propose that at Piton de la Fournaise, the thick vadose zone and high permeability favor CO2 transfer by thermal convection. Additionally, energy transfer is decoupled from mass transfer. Slow heat transfer from the atmosphere down to the accumulated CO2 layers in the subsurface results in a delayed influence of air temperature and of the water table level on the thermal gradient between the subsurface and the atmosphere, and consequently on the efficiency of the CO2 transfer. In Mayotte, we propose that the thin vadose zone and the presence of a network of large fractures favor CO2 transfer by barometric pumping. It thus important to understand what controls its mobility. In contexts of high soil CO2 contents, environmental parameters can drive soil CO2 transfers toward the atmosphere, but their influence is still poorly understood at timescales beyond a few days. To address this issue, we studied how air temperature, atmospheric pressure, rainfall, and water table level affect soil CO2 efflux in volcanic environments where the soil CO2 content is naturally high due to magmatic degassing. Our study sites are the volcanoes of Piton de la Fournaise and Mayotte. We performed a time‐lagged detrended cross‐correlation analysis which compares the similarity between different time series. We find that air temperature, atmospheric pressure and water table level variations can cause soil CO2 to move toward the surface. The magnitude of their influence and the type of transfers depend on the geological properties of the study sites. We also find that these influences can occur with significant delays of over a hundred days. Formalised elicitation of expert judgements has been used to help tackle several problematic societal issues, including volcanic crises and pandemic threats. We present an expert elicitation exercise for Piton de la Fournaise volcano, La Réunion island, held remotely in April 2021. This involved 28 experts from nine countries who considered a hypothetical effusive eruption crisis involving a new vent opening in a high-risk area. The tele-elicitation presented several challenges, but is a promising and workable option for application to future volcanic crises. Our exercise considered an “uncommon” eruptive scenario with a vent outside the present caldera and within inhabited areas, and provided uncertainty ranges for several hazard-related questions for such a scenario (e.g. probability of eruption within a defined timeframe; elapsed time until lava flow reaches a critical location, and other hazard management issues). Our exercise indicated that such a scenario would probably present very different characteristics compared to recent eruptions, and that it is fundamental to include well-prepared expert elicitations in updated civil protection evacuation plans to improve disaster response procedures.

Near‐real time analysis of magnetization can provide important information for the imaging of volcano systems and their spatiotemporal evolution. This study focuses on the contribution of volcano‐magnetic signals from reiterations of ground magnetic measurements to investigate the evolution of active structures at the Piton de la Fournaise volcano from 2017 to 2020. Changes are demonstrated by magnetic anomalies along a reference profile by means of the reiteration periods. These variations are first modeled qualitatively in 2D using electrical resistivity constraints in order to investigate the evolution of magnetization at depth through time, and the model is subsequently compared with the 3D intrusive activity from depth up to the surface from Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) inverse modeling. The shallow areas of demagnetization modeled from one reiteration to another are consistent with the geometry and location of the underlying intrusions revealed by the 3D InSAR models, suggesting strong thermal, stress, and electrokinetic effects due to magmatic activity not only at the surface but also at depth, along the main magmatic paths. It also raises a question as to the extent of the associated thermal diffusion processes at the scale of individual magma injections. This study confirms that detecting resistivity and magnetization anomalies, and quantifying their spatiotemporal evolution, can provide powerful tools for imaging volcanic systems at various scales and for providing warning of associated hazards. It also highlights the necessity for 4D monitoring of volcanic edifices using this method to provide greater precision, an important issue that is now made possible by the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle measurements. In this study, we used repeated magnetic measurements conducted over 3 years along a 3,780‐m‐length profile close to the summit of Piton de la Fournaise. We used the complementarities between magnetization and electrical resistivity parameters in a 2D magnetic modeling approach, in order to image the consequence of the eruptive dynamics on the edifice structure at depth. The temporal evolution of the magnetic anomalies appears strongly correlated to the depths and volumes of magmatic intrusions along the main active area. These results open new perspectives in studying the spatiotemporal changes in magmatic, hydrothermal, and mechanical changes and alteration processes within volcanic edifices. In this study, we demonstrate the strong potential of combining Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-based thermal infrared (IR) and magnetic measurements to image the thermal state of volcanic edifices, as well as the distribution of active volcano-tectonic features at depth. Since magnetization is strongly dependent on temperature and alteration, thermally active structures are also associated with a decrease in magnetization. Based on the analysis of recent combined magnetic and infrared acquisitions, we focus on the recent evolution of the summit activity at Piton de la Fournaise. The comparison clearly highlights zones of major thermal activity, alteration and high permeability, and potentially areas of low mechanical resistance. Those observations provide information on preferential pathways for future activity, and also provide constraints on fluid transfer, diffusion, and cooling processes occurring within the volcano subsurface. Through reiterations, such combined UAV measurements are therefore particularly relevant in monitoring volcanic hazards before, during and after eruptions.

The island of La Réunion is made up of two main shield volcanoes: Piton des Neiges and Piton de la Fournaise. A wide variety of seismic events is observed, including but not limited to: tectonic events, volcano-tectonic earthquakes, volcanic tremors, long-period and very-long-period earthquakes. The seismicity of La Réunion island illuminates different levels of its volcanic plumbing system. In the shallowest part of Piton de la Fournaise, earthquakes are clustered below the volcano summit area and often occur as intense seismic swarms during magma intrusions. Seismic activity is also observed below the East flank of Piton de la Fournaise, shaping an eastward dipping structure possibly accommodating seaward displacements of the volcano. At larger depths, episodes of upward seismicity migrations indicate magmatic recharges of the shallow reservoir from deeper parts of the volcano plumbing system. Earthquakes are also observed below the oceanic crust in a zone of underplating between Piton des Neiges and Piton de la Fournaise. A major event at Piton de la Fournaise was the collapse of its summit caldera in April 2007. This activity resulting in a summital depression of 330 m was accompanied by very-long-period earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from $M_W=4.4$ to $M_W=5.4$. Another noticeable activity in La Réunion island is an active seismic swarm located within the oceanic crust under the North flank of Piton des Neiges. The origin of this sustained seismic activity is still unclear and is currently investigated, thanks to the deployments of additional stations in the region.

The Failure Forecast Method (FFM) has been used to forecast the onset of volcanic eruptions with varying degrees of success. The method involves fitting its empirical equation to precursory observables, e.g., seismic data. Current models explaining the empirical equation assume that the seismic observables used (e.g., seismic event-rate, seismic moment-rate or seismic energy-rate) are related to accelerated fracture growth. In these models, such fracture growth results in an apparent increase in seismic activity. In this study, however, we propose an alternative explanation for the increase in seismicity culminating in volcanic eruptions. We suggest that the increase in seismicity, particularly in the seismic amplitudes, can result from ascending seismic sources towards the surface and that the increase can be used for eruption forecasts using the FFM. Our argument is based on the need for magma to migrate towards the surface to produce an eruption. To test our argument, we used synthetic and field/real data and fitted them with the FFM model. The synthetic data is generated using the body wave attenuation equation, and the real data is from the Piton de la Fournaise eruption on January 2nd, 2010. We used seismic amplitudes and seismic amplitude ratios as the precursory observables and used a combination of Simulated Annealing and Bayesian Inversion algorithms to obtain the best-fit parameters of the FFM model and their posterior distributions. For the synthetic cases, we found that the method gave reasonable estimates of failure or eruption time, suggesting that the seismic amplitudes and the seismic amplitude ratios can be used for forecasting using the FFM. For the field/real cases, the results gave information about the timing of magma chamber failure, magma propagation, and the eruption onset. Our results highlight an example of modelling volcano monitoring data with the FFM that gives reasonable estimates of eruption time even if the data may not fully represent failure processes. Piton de la Fournaise is one of the most active worldwide volcanoes, located on the southeastern part of La Réunion Island. In this work, we focus on the eruption that occurred on the southeastern flank of this volcano, inside the Enclos Fouqué caldera, from 11 to 15 August 2019. This distal event was characterized by the opening of two eruptive fissures and accompanied by shallow volcano–tectonic earthquakes. We exploit the ground displacements using Sentinel-1 Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) measurements, which include the ground deformations generated during both the pre- and co-eruptive phases. To investigate the sources responsible for the detected ground displacements, we perform an analytical modeling of the retrieved DInSAR measurements. Our results reveal the presence of five volcanic sources (i.e., one sill-like source and four dikes), whose concomitant action during the pre- and co-eruptive phases generated the complex detected deformation pattern. The retrieved volcanic sources correlate well with the location of the opened fissures, the spatial distribution and the temporal evolution of the recorded seismicity, and other geophysical evidence already known in the literature. The March–April 2007 Piton de la Fournaise basaltic eruption was the most significant eruption on La Réunion Island in historical times. On 2 April, a fissure opened on the southeastern flank of the volcano. Vigorous fountains fed lavas that rapidly reached the coast. Three days later, on the 5–6 April, major caldera collapse occurred at the summit, affecting the floor and walls of Dolomieu caldera. Monitoring records, primarily webcam images, have been analysed and integrated with geophysical data to reconstruct the chronology of events at the summit during caldera collapse. Those events included progressive subsidence of the former caldera floor, landslides, explosions, lava emissions and steam fumaroles, and lasted until 19 April though diminished greatly in frequency after 7 April. For two days after the main caldera collapse on 5 April, subsidence increments, intracaldera lava emission and explosions were closely associated in time and in location. Abundant steam and wet talus on the caldera walls imply that the shallow hydrothermal system and/or groundwater were exposed by subsidence. The presence of juvenile components in ash deposited at the summit during caldera collapse and the close link between intracaldera lavas and explosions suggest that many explosions were phreatomagmatic. Although caldera collapse was related to magma withdrawal from beneath the summit via the flank vent activity, numerous intracaldera lava emissions indicated that magma was nevertheless present at the summit during caldera collapse. We infer that the lava emissions were fed by an intrusion emplaced at the end of March into the eastern summit region and that the intrusion was being actively recharged during caldera collapse. We produced new multi-temporal Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) of the April 2007 summit collapse at Piton de la Fournaise from previously unused aerial photographs. This dataset revealed the precise temporal evolution of collapsed volume and caldera morphological changes. Four days after the onset of an eruption at an unusually low elevation, the summit started to collapse (20:48 UTC April 5th). During the first 30 hours, collapsing was relatively fast (840 m3 s-1 average), and continued for at least the following 12 days, at a slower rate (46 m3 s-1 average). On April 19th, the collapse reached 96% of its final volume, while the remaining 4% were probably attained by May 1st (end of lava emission at the vent). The post-collapse hydrothermal activity in the caldera is closely associated with the main ring faults evidenced as active during the collapse, which are now preferential paths for fluids to reach the surface.

Modeling of ionic diffusion in natural crystals has been developed over the last three decades to calculate timescales of geological processes. As the number of studies and the size of data sets have expanded, improvements in the precision of the general technique are needed to resolve temporal patterns that would otherwise be masked by large uncertainties. This contribution examines fundamental aspects of timescale calculation uncertainty using Mg-Fe zonation in olivine crystals from a Piton de la Fournaise oceanite erupted in 2002 CE. First, we quantitatively consider the role of geometric uncertainty in data sets from the perspectives of sectioning angle, crystal shape, and crystal agglomeration. Second, we assess how crystal growth and changing boundary conditions during diffusion pose problems for simplistic, 1D, diffusion-only modeling. An initial database of 104 timescales (7–45 days) was generated using typical, 1D, isothermal diffusion-only methods for profiles taken from 30 compositionally and texturally zoned crystals of olivine. This simplistic modeling yields poor model fits and imprecise timescales; prior to this work, we would have rejected >60% of these data. Universal-stage measurements of crystal boundary angles and three-dimensional (3D) X‑ray microcomputed tomography observations of crystal shape address geometric uncertainties. U-stage measurements show that, contrary to expectations of random sectioning, most boundaries modeled initially were close to the ideal sectioning plane. Assessment of crystal morphology from 2D thin sections suggests olivine crystals are dominantly euhedral; however, 3D imaging reveals that they are significantly subhedral and often exist as agglomerates, an observation that underscores both the potential for diverse crystal interactions through time in the magma (Wieser et al. 2019) and out-of-plane effects capable of influencing calculations of diffusion profiles. Refinements to timescale determination can be made using a dynamic 1D modeling code to resolve growth and changing boundary effects simultaneous with diffusion. We incorporated temperature-dependent crystal growth rates (both linear growth and quadratically increasing, with a peak growth rate ~1.9 ×10–11 ms–1) and temperature-dependent boundary conditions (controlled using a cooling rate of –0.5 ± 0.1 °C/h) to remodel 13 timescales, resulting in significantly improved fits of the diffusion model to the initial data, better agreement between different faces of the same crystal, and less scatter within the whole data set.The use of 3D imaging and the inclusion of changing boundary conditions and crystal growth for diffusion calculations will enable more robust conclusions to be drawn from similar data in the future. Abstract In September 2016, Piton de la Fournaise volcano, well known for its effusive and Hawaiian fountaining activity, produced, at the end of the eruption, an unusual phase of pulsating ash and bomb emission. Integration of geophysical data, with textural and petrological analysis of the samples, allowed us to constrain the main factors that controlled this sudden shift in activity, potentially dangerous for the tourist population that usually approach these “gentle” eruptive sites. Volcanic tremor, lava discharge rates, fountain heights, and SO2 emission changed rapidly during the eruption. Grain size and componentry of the tephra beds evolved from unimodal all along the sequence to bimodal on the last day of the activity, reflecting the contribution of both Hawaiian fountaining at the main vent (Vent A) and transient explosive activity at the second vent (Vent B). Hawaiian fountaining produced highly vesicular and almost microlite‐free tephra (golden pumice and fluidal scoria) while transient explosive activity emitted denser and crystal‐rich tephra (sideromelane and tachylite scoria) sometimes mingled with vesicular fragments. Permeability measurements on lapilli and bomb‐sized samples reveal that golden pumice and fluidal scoria were more gas‐permeable than the sideromelane and tachylite ones, while textural and chemical analyses of the ash support the hypothesis that these sideromelane and tachylite components were inherited from the subsurface crystallization of the initial golden pumice and fluidal scoria components. We thus suggest that Vent B accumulated a plug of degassed, cooled, and low‐permeable magma, which modulated overpressure pulses under the late input of ascending magma.

Five effusive eruptions of Piton de la Fournaise (La Réunion) are analyzed to investigate temporal trends of erupted mass and sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions. Daily SO2 emissions are acquired from three ultraviolet (UV) satellite instruments (the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS), and the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI)) and an array of ground-based UV spectrometers (Network for Observation of Volcanic and Atmospheric Change (NOVAC)). Time-averaged lava discharge rates (TADRs) are obtained from two automatic satellite-based hot spot detection systems: MIROVA and MODVOLC. Assuming that the lava volumes measured in the field are accurate, the MIROVA system gave the best estimation of erupted volume among the methods investigated. We use a reverse petrological method to constrain pre-eruptive magmatic sulfur contents based on observed SO2 emissions and lava volumes. We also show that a direct petrological approach using SO2 data might be a viable alternative for TADR estimation during cloudy weather that compromises hot spot detection. In several eruptions we observed a terminal increase in TADR and SO2 emissions after initial emission of evolved degassed magma. We ascribe this to input of deeper, volatile-rich magma into the plumbing system towards the end of these eruptions. Furthermore, we find no evidence of volatile excess in the five eruptions studied, which were thus mostly fed by shallow degassed magma.

Small-volume proximal-summit eruptions, sometimes with only little precursors, are common at Piton de la Fournaise (La Reunion Island, France). Their eruptive style ranges from Hawaiian to Strombolian, but their eruptive mechanisms are still not completely understood. To gain insight, we combined syn-eruptive field work, textural and geochemical measurements on the short-lived eruption of July 2015 and we compared it with the 2014 eruption, which opened the ongoing eruptive cycle at Piton de la Fournaise. Crystal-poor and moderately vesicular components were predominant at the beginning of the eruptions, during the lava flux peak and the Hawaiian-style activity. Their abundance decreased with time in favour of less vesiculated and crystal-rich components during the decrease of the lava flux and the Strombolian-style activity. Physical, textural and chemical characterization of the pyroclasts, as well as thermometry calculations, permit relating the different texture and chemical features of the eruptive products with the pre- and syn-eruptive processes. Geophysical precursors detected several weeks before the July 2015 eruption, as well as some evidences of magmatic reheating recorded in bulk and crystal compositions highlight that the July 2015 magma results from a pre-eruptive mixing between more and less differentiated magmas. We finally deduced that the observed syn-eruptive textural variations are related to the same batch of magma undergoing different cooling and degassing dynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Volcanic eruptions in basaltic systems represent the most frequent expression of volcanic activity in the World, whose surface manifestations range from effusive lava flows to more explosive events. Their eruptive dynamics and style are largely controlled by the degassing of magma. In this study, we analyze seismic tremors recorded during 23 eruptions that occurred at Piton de la Fournaise volcano (La Réunion, France) during 2014–2021 and show that their properties are strongly linked to the magma degassing. We apply the network covariance matrix method to build a catalog of tremor sources associated with all 23 eruptions, to measure their time-frequency properties, and to locate their sources. We then conduct a multi-disciplinary analysis by comparing the seismic tremor observations with images of the eruptive sites, lava flow rate measurements, impulsive earthquakes, as well as deformation and magma composition data. The tremor depth distribution is found to be well correlated with magma gas content, indicating that the tremor generating mechanism is largely controlled by the shallow magma degassing under the eruptive site. Abstract Many active European volcanoes and volcano observatories are island-based and located far from their administrative “mainland”. Consequently, Governments have developed multisite approaches, in which monitoring is performed by a network of individuals distributed across several national research centers. At a transnational level, multinational networks are also progressively emerging. Piton de la Fournaise (La Réunion Island, France) is one such example. Piton de la Fournaise is one of the most active volcanoes of the World, and is located at the greatest distance from its “mainland” than any other vulnerable “overseas” site, the observatory being 9365 km from its governing body in Paris. Effusive risk is high, so that a well-coordinated and rapid response involving near-real time delivery of trusted, validated and operational product for hazard assessment is critical. Here we review how near-real time assessments of lava flow propagation were developed using rapid provision, and update, of key source terms through a dynamic and open integration of near-real time remote sensing, modeling and measurement capabilities on both the national and international level. The multi-national system evolved during the five effusive crises of 2014–2015, and is now mature for Piton de la Fournaise. This review allows us to identify strong and weak points in an extended observatory system, and demonstrates that enhanced multi-national integration can have fundamental implications in scientific hazard assessment and response during an on-going effusive crisis.

Piton de la Fournaise is one of the world's most active and visited volcanoes. Its summit crater (Cratère Dolomieu), the main tourist attraction, underwent a major caldera collapse in 2007 and its rim is not yet stabilized. In order to assess the caldera rim instability risk for visitors, we followed its structural evolution from 2007 to 2015. Using aerial photogrammetry campaigns, we mapped the unstable sites very precisely, carried out a quantitative analysis of the temporal evolution of these instabilities, and assessed the risks for visitors. Considering the 2008–2015 period, four sites close to the crater's edge showed significant horizontal ground motion (0.5–2 m), fracture widening (average of 0.3–0.56 m) and large-scale mass wasting volumes (total of 1.8±0.1 × 106 m3). We infer two different processes at work: (1) to the west and north, toppling of the basalt units occurs after periods of fracture widening due to the combined effect of magmatic intrusions and long-term inflation/deflation cycles; (2) to the south and east, parts of the caldera rim slowly slide towards the caldera centre, with significant accelerations during periods of enhanced volcanic activity (in 2008–2010 and 2014–2015). The official observation platform is the most stable zone to overlook the Cratère Dolomieu. Volcano‐tectonic seismicity has been recorded for decades on various volcanoes and is linked with the magma transport and reservoir pressurization. Yet earthquakes often appear broadly distributed such that magma movement is difficult to infer from its analysis. We explore the seismicity that occurred before eruptions at Piton de la Fournaise in the last 5 years. Using template matching and relocation techniques, we produce a refined image of the summit seismicity, demonstrating that most earthquakes are located on a ring structure. However, only a portion of this structure is activated before each eruption, which provides an indication as to the direction of the future eruptive site. Furthermore, we show that the delay between the pre‐eruptive swarm and the eruption onset is proportional to the distance of the eruptive fissures relative to the summit cone. This reveals that the beginning of the intrusion already bears information regarding the future eruption location. Plain Language Summary: Earthquakes on volcanoes are usually related to the ascent of magma in the edifice and can therefore provide information concerning an impending eruption. Yet on many occasions, it is not easy to relate the recorded seismicity to the propagation of magma in the volcano. In this study, we detect and locate earthquakes that occurred before 13 eruptions at Piton de la Fournaise, a hawaiian‐type volcano located on La Réunion island in the Indian Ocean. We demonstrate that a detailed analysis of the seismicity occurring when the magma starts its ascent can bring important information regarding the future eruption location. Changes in magma properties and transport geometry can have a direct impact on volcanic activity. However, such variations can be difficult to track during eruptions. We report previously undetected very-long-period (VLP) signals at Piton de la Fournaise that can be used to probe changes in magma transport. Source analysis of VLP events during the August-October 2015 eruption indicates a source depth of about 0.9 -1.2 km and points to the resonance of the magma dike feeding the eruption. The evolution of the resonance period reveals a shortening of the dike when the magma flux decreases at the end of the eruption. VLP events are actually quite frequent at Piton de la Fournaise: all eruptions analyzed in this study exhibit VLP signals that are indicative of rapid drops in lava discharge. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) remote sensing plays a significant role in volcano monitoring despite the measurements’ non real-time nature. The technique’s capability of imaging the spatial extent of ground motion has especially helped to shed light on the location, shape, and dynamics of subsurface magmatic storage and transport as well as the overall state of activity of volcanoes worldwide. A variety of different deformation phenomena are observed at exceptionally active and frequently erupting volcanoes, like Piton de la Fournaise on La Réunion Island. Those offer a powerful means of investigating related geophysical source processes and offer new insights into an active volcano’s edifice architecture, stability, and eruptive behavior. Since 1998, Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) has been playing an increasingly important role in developing our present understanding of the Piton de la Fournaise volcanic system. We here collect the most significant scientific results, identify limitations, and summarize the lessons learned from exploring the rich Piton de la Fournaise SAR data archive over the past ~20 years. For instance, the technique has delivered first evidence of the previously long suspected mobility of the volcano’s unsupported eastern flank, and it is especially useful for detecting displacements related to eruptions that occur far away from the central cone, where Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) stations are sparse. However, superimposed deformation processes, dense vegetation along the volcano’s lower eastern flank, and turbulent atmospheric phase contributions make Piton de la Fournaise a challenging target for applying InSAR. Multitemporal InSAR approaches that have the potential to overcome some of these limitations suffer from frequent eruptions that cause the replacement of scatterers. With increasing data acquisition rates, multisensor complementarity, and advanced processing techniques that resourcefully handle large data repositories, InSAR is progressively evolving into a near-real-time, complementary, operational volcano monitoring tool. We therefore emphasize the importance of InSAR at highly active and well-monitored volcanoes such as Mount Etna, Italy, Kīlauea Volcano, Hawai’i, and Piton de la Fournaise, La Réunion.

Anticipating eruptions early enough to give warning to authorities is one of the main goals in volcanology. However, identifying and providing unequivocal identification on volcano reawakening remain challenging issues, mostly when unrests are sudden or undetectable. At the Piton de la Fournaise volcano, a clear increase in both the seismicity and the ground displacements are systematically observed a few days/weeks before eruptions, and appear as clear eruptive precursors. Here a systematic study of these long-term precursors demonstrates the changes in their intensity, duration, and time of appearance during 1998–2017 (43 eruptions), directly linked to the influence of the pre- and post-summit caldera formation (April 2007) and to changes in the deep magma refilling process since 2016. These changes in the precursors were not without consequence on the early alert to the authorities, with some false alerts and late alerts. It is thus of prime importance for crisis management to bear in mind the possibility of these rapid changes and that of sudden volcanic unrest with little warnings, to be able to take the most appropriate decisions, in particular raising the level of alert or lifting it totally. The findings of this study have enabled the relevant authorities to improve the alert chain protocol, and scientists to communicate more efficiently with the decision-makers.

We have analyzed the impact of different forcings, such as rain and seismicity, on slope instabilites on an active volcano. For this, we compiled a catalog of the locations and volumes of rockfalls in the Piton de la Fournaise crater using seismic records. We validated it by comparing the locations and volumes to those deduced from photogrammetric data. We analyzed 10,477 rockfalls, spanning the period 2014 to 2016. This period corresponds to the renewal of volcanic activity after a 41‐month rest. Our analysis reveals that renewed eruptive activity has unsettled the crater edges. External forcings such as rain and seismicity are shown to potentially increase the number and the volume of rockfalls, with a stronger impact on the volume. Preeruptive seismicity seems to be the main triggering factor for the largest volumes, with a delay of one to several days. Rain alone does not seem to trigger especially large rockfalls. We infer that repetitive vibrations from the many seismic events, combined with the action of rain, induce crack (or slip) growth in highly fractured (or granular) materials, leading to the collapse of large volumes. Regarding their spatial distribution before an eruption, the largest rockfalls seem to migrate toward the location of magma extrusion. La Réunion is a large volcanic construction resting on Paleocene oceanic crust. Through the 3D inversion of a large set of magnetotelluric (MT) soundings, our results reveal the general resistivity structure of the western part of Piton de la Fournaise volcano down to its base and the first 10 km or so of the underlying lithosphere. The resistivity pattern shows a general stratification of the resistivity values. An upper resistive layer corresponds to unsaturated and water-saturated lava flows. This layer is thinner (a few hundred meters) in the Enclos and Plaine des Sables/Fond de la Rivière de l'Est areas than on the NW flank where it reaches 2000 m. Below, the rest of the edifice is distinctly more conductive and shows highly conductive patches. The origin of the globally weak resistivity of the lower part of the construction is not established but can be tentatively attributed to a higher degree of alteration. The case of the highly conductive patches is different. Resistivity values of a few Ω·m imply the presence of highly conductive fluids and/or minerals that, in this context, are generally associated with hydrothermal phenomena. In the Enclos, highly conductive patches are unambiguously attributed to the presently active hydrothermal system. Beneath the Plaine des Sables/Fond de la Rivière de l'Est, they may be associated with hydrothermal alteration developed by the ancient volcanic center. The larger highly conductive patches are found below sea level and above the crust beneath the NW flank, at depths significantly larger than the others. This area coincides with the path of the N120 rift zone, with a deep (~10–20 km) seismicity and with diffuse CO 2 degassing. A relationship may therefore be inferred between deep magmatic activity, eruptive activity and postulated highly conductive hydrothermal zone. In the globally weak resistivity of the lower part of the edifice, a dome of moderate resistivity (>1 kΩ·m) is centered beneath the Plaine des Sables. It is wider than a dense intrusive complex inferred from gravity models in the same area. The present resolution of both MT and gravity models cannot exclude a same nature for both structures. Beneath 4 km b.s.l., an increase of the resistivity values underlines an interface in good agreement with the inferred location of the transition between the edifice and the oceanic crust at this depth. The upper lithosphere shows resistivity values above 250 Ω·m. This study therefore demonstrates the capability of the method to image major shallow structures such as the hydrothermally altered zones, and deeper ones such as the heterogeneity of the crust. Recent volcanic lava flows extending into the ocean represent an ideal opportunity to study the long-term successional development of marine floral assemblages on the bare new substratum. We describe the floral assemblages of nine lava flows of different ages (prehistoric to 2007) at Piton de la Fournaise (Reunion Island, Indian Ocean) based on a survey of 37 stations. We identified 159 species including 148 macroalgae, 1 seagrass, and 10 cyanobacteria. Fifty-one of those represent new records for Reunion Island, and at least 9 taxa were identified as new to science. Recent lava flows were characterized by the dominance of ephemeral, opportunistic species, such as Pseudobryopsis hainanensis and Acrocladus dotyanus , while prehistoric lava flows were mainly characterized by perennial species, particularly Sargassum portierianum and Turbinaria ornata . A canonical correspondence analysis revealed that the environmental factor that most significantly correlated to the variation in floral assemblages was the distance to the most recent lava flow (2007). This factor was also highly correlated to coral cover. The composition of the different floral assemblages is discussed in relation to abiotic and biotic factors to explain ecological succession in a tropical environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The added value of combining InSAR and GNSS data, characterized by good spatial coverage and high temporal resolution, respectively, is evaluated based on a specific event: the propagation of the magma intrusion leading to the 26 May 2016 eruption at Piton de la Fournaise volcano (Reunion Island, France). Surface displacement is a non linear function of the geometry and location of the pressurized source of unrest, so inversions use a random search, based on a neighborhood algorithm, combined with a boundary element modeling method. We first invert InSAR and GNSS data spanning the whole event (propagation phase and eruption) to determine the final geometry of the intrusion. Random search conducted in the inversion results in two best-fit model families with similar data fits. Adding the same time-period GNSS dataset to the inversions does not significantly modify the results. Even when weighting data to provide even contributions, the fit is systematically better for descending than ascending interferograms, which might indicate an eastward flank motion. Then, we invert the GNSS time series in order to derive information on the propagation dynamics, validating our approach using a SAR image acquired during the propagation phase. We show that the GNSS time series can only be used to correctly track the magma propagation when the final intrusion geometry derived from InSAR and GNSS measurements is used as an a priori. A new method to extract part of a mesh, based on the representation of meshes as graphs, better explains the data and better accounts for the opening of the eruptive fissure than a method based on the projection of a circular pressure sources. Finally, we demonstrate that the temporal inversion of GNSS data strongly favors one family of models over an other for the final intrusion, removing the ambiguity inherent in the inversion of InSAR data.

Space-borne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) provides an opportunity for monitoring ground deformation at active volcanoes with high temporal and spatial resolutions. Modern SAR satellites acquire very large volumes of data that no longer can be effectively and efficiently processed and interpreted manually. The development of novel automatic processing methodologies is warranted in order to fully utilize big data. The Multidimensional Small Baseline Subset (MSBAS) methodology is an example of the semi-automatic processing system for computing temporally dense two-dimensional, horizontal east-west and vertical time series of ground deformation from ascending and descending SAR imagery acquired by various satellites. Here MSBAS is used for mapping ground deformation at the Piton de la Fournaise volcano (La Réunion Island, France) during the February 2012–April 2016 period from RADARSAT-2 data. Five volcanic eruptions occurred during the June 2014–October 2015 period, producing over 60cm of horizontal and over 30cm of vertical ground deformation, well-resolved in the MSBAS-derived time series. Validation of DInSAR results by comparison with GNSS observations and modeling of the two last and largest eruptions was performed. Validation showed good overall agreement between DInSAR and GNSS observations while revealing the benefits and limitations of both techniques. Modeling of fault and dike geometries attempted to explain the dis-proportionally large eastward motion of the eastern flank of the Piton de la Fournaise volcano that occurred during these eruptions. Major and trace element compositions were obtained for bulk rocks and melt inclusions hosted in olivine crystals (Fo > 85) from the adventive cones of the Piton de La Fournaise volcano (La Réunion Island). Ratios of highly incompatible trace elements for these magmas are used to identify the nature of the La Réunion mantle plume source. Although adventive cone lavas display unusual major element compositions compared to the historical lavas of the volcano (e.g., lower CaO/AlO), trace element data suggest that the magmas emitted by the adventive cones originate from a common chemical source. This source may correspond to either a homogeneous mixed source of different mantle components or a near-primitive less-differentiated mantle source. The melt inclusions display ratios of highly incompatible elements (e.g., Th/La, Nb/La) which are similar to primitive mantle values, and lower Nb/U ratios compared to most oceanic basalts. These results and previous isotopic and trace element data suggest that La Réunion plume samples a source which is intermediate between a primitive-like mantle domain and a slightly depleted one almost unaffected by the recycling processes. This source could have originated from early depletion of the primitive mantle. Assuming a depletion 4.45 Gyr ago, ~10% melting of this slightly depleted source could explain the enriched trace element concentrations of the melt inclusions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Monitoring ground surface displacement of volcanoes over a long period of time helps improve understanding of the volcano structure, dynamics and mechanisms. In this paper, we investigate the spatio-temporal behavior of the long-term displacement field at Piton de la Fournaise volcano (La Réunion Island) by means of X-band InSAR and GNSS time series analysis from 2009 to 2014. We propose a new correction approach based on principal component analysis to mitigate the long-wavelength artifact in the interferograms over the study area. Our results show that most of the volcanic edifice including the Central Cone, the Eastern Flank and recent lava flow fields was affected by varying degrees of ground motion. More importantly, a widespread sector (~ 20 km 2 ) affected by time-dependent downward and eastward motion was observed on the Eastern Flank of Piton de la Fournaise. The combined analysis of InSAR and GNSS time series and previous studies allows us to confirm that this large mobile sector on the Eastern Flank underwent deformation for at least 7 years following the end of the large March–April 2007 eruption, including a stage of transient strain from the end of eruption to February 2011, followed by a stage of steady-state strain until late 2014. Several possible origins, including a pre-existing structural discontinuity, summit stress associated with magmatism, and activated fault movement are explored to explain the observed widespread long-term seaward motion that is considered to be direct evidence of potential flank instability. Persistent motion of the south flank of Kīlauea Volcano, Hawai'i, has been known for several decades, but has only recently been identified at other large basaltic volcanoes—namely Piton de la Fournaise (La Réunion) and Etna (Sicily)—thanks to the advent of space geodetic techniques. Nevertheless, understanding of long-term flank instability is based largely on the example of Kīlauea, despite the large differences in the manifestations and mechanisms of the process when viewed through a comparative lens. For example, the rate of flank motion at Kīlauea is several times that of Etna and Piton de la Fournaise and is accommodated on a slip plane several km deeper than is probably present at the other two volcanoes. Gravitational spreading also appears to be the dominant driving force at Kīlauea, given the long-term steady motion of the volcano's south flank regardless of eruptive/intrusive activity, whereas magmatic activity plays a larger role in flank deformation at Etna and Piton de la Fournaise. Kīlauea and Etna, however, are both characterized by heavily faulted flanks, while Piton de la Fournaise shows little evidence for flank faulting. A helpful means of understanding the spectrum of persistent flank motion at large basaltic edifices may be through a framework defined on one hand by magmatic activity (which encompasses both magma supply and edifice size), and on the other hand by the structural setting of the volcano (especially the characteristics of the subvolcanic basement or subhorizontal intravolcanic weak zones). A volcano's size and magmatic activity will dictate the extent to which gravitational and magmatic forces can drive motion of an unstable flank (and possibly the level of faulting of that flank), while the volcano's structural setting governs whether or not a plane of weakness exists beneath or within the edifice and can facilitate flank slip. Considering persistent flank instability using this conceptual model is an alternative to using a single volcano as a “type example”—especially given that the example is usually Kīlauea, which defines an extreme end of the spectrum—and can provide a basis for understanding why flank motion may or may not exist on other large basaltic volcanoes worldwide. Basaltic magma chambers are often characterized by emptying and refilling cycles that influence their evolution in space and time, and the associated eruptive activity. During April 2007, the largest historical eruption of Piton de la Fournaise (Île de La Réunion, France) drained the shallow plumbing system ( > 240 × 10 6 m 3 ) and resulted in collapse of the 1-km-wide summit crater. Following these major events, Piton de la Fournaise entered a seven-year long period of near-continuous deflation interrupted, in June 2014, by a new phase of significant inflation. By integrating multiple datasets (lava discharge rates, deformation, seismicity, gas flux, gas composition, and lava chemistry), we here show that the progressive migration of magma from a deeper (below sea level) storage zone gradually rejuvenated and pressurized the above-sea-level portion of the magmatic system consisting of a vertically-zoned network of relatively small-volume magma pockets. Continuous inflation provoked four small ( < 5 × 10 6 m 3 ) eruptions from vents located close to the summit cone and culminated, during August–October 2015, with a chemically zoned eruption that erupted 45 ± 15 × 10 6 m 3 of lava. This two-month-long eruption evolved through (i) an initial phase of waning discharge, associated to the withdrawal of differentiated magma from the shallow system, into (ii) a month-long phase of increasing lava and SO 2 fluxes at the effusive vent, coupled with CO 2 enrichment of summit fumaroles, and involving emission of less differentiated lavas, to end with, (iii) three short-lived (∼2 day-long) pulses in lava and gas flux, coupled with arrival of cumulative olivine at the surface and deflation. The activity observed at Piton de la Fournaise in 2014 and 2015 points to a new model of shallow system rejuvenation and discharge, whereby continuous magma supply causes eruptions from increasingly deeper and larger magma storage zones. Downward depressurization continues until unloading of the deepest, least differentiated magma triggers pulses in lava and gas flux, accompanied by rapid contraction of the volcano edifice, that empties the main shallow reservoir and terminates the cycle. Seismic data have been used to catalog the location and volume of most of the rockfalls that occurred at the Piton de la Fournaise volcano from May 2007, just after the major collapse of the Dolomieu summit crater floor, to May 2011. This catalog made it possible to compare the evolution of the number and volume of rockfalls at a high temporal resolution and to investigate their links with eruptions, seismicity, deformations and rainfalls affecting the Piton de la Fournaise volcano. Results show that the purge of unstable areas created by the Dolomieu crater floor collapse occurred in two phases: a first phase, lasting three months, during which the intense rockfall activity immediately following the collapse decreased abruptly and a second phase, lasting more than two years, during which the daily volume of the rockfalls slowly decreased before reaching a steady state. A detailed study of 4 time periods, including 3 eruptive cycles, indicates that strong seismicity can increase the number of rockfalls. Furthermore, when a dike reaches the surface at the summit of the central cone, giving birth to an eruption, the associated local forcing can in some cases increase the volume of rockfalls, possibly by creating or expanding weak zones. In most cases, this is not observed for dike intrusions that do not reach the surface. The newly created weak zones are most often far from the eruptive fissures of the ongoing eruption, but close to the location of the next eruption. This suggests that these distant zones are also weakened at depth, thus creating preferred paths for future dikes propagating toward the surface. The impact of rainfall on rockfall activity was also studied, given that La Réunion Island is subject to very intense rainfall events. Our results show that rainfall can in some cases trigger rockfalls rapidly, with response times of less than a day, but not systematically, and no triggering rainfall threshold was found. Self potential (SP) anomalies over Piton de La Fournaise volcano (La Réunion Island) are generally interpreted as resulting from meteoritic water porous flow. However, there is no clear evidence that the subsurface is permanently saturated. Recently, a convective subsurface airflow has been evidenced within a quiescent cone at Piton de La Fournaise (Formica Leo). SP and thermal anomalies are reported on the unsaturated edifice and are seen to be correlated. It is proposed that the SP signal is generated by the movement of water films present on the porous matrix, induced by the intense humid airflow within Formica Leo. The structure of the cone, determined from electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), ground penetrating radar (GPR), microgravimetric and kinematic GPS data, is used to constrain a 3D numerical model of the air convection. The calculated temperature is then used to derive the related SP signal, the electrokinetic coupling coefficient being estimated from direct observations of the electrical resistivity of the soil. Extrapolating these results to the scale of the volcano, it is thus proposed that a cold humid airflow enters the flanks of the 400 m-high terminal dome, flows up along the sloped and stratified volcanic layers before exiting through the vertical fractures around the Dolomieu collapse. It is demonstrated that the SP anomalies catches the main features recovered over the entire volcano. This result strongly suggests that humid airflow may play a major role on the generation of SP anomalies at Piton de la Fournaise volcano, and perhaps in other unsaturated volcanic edifices. Immiscible sulfide liquids in basaltic magmas play an important role in trace metal transport and the sulfur budget of volcanic eruptions. However, sulfides are transient phases, whose origin and fate are poorly constrained. We address these issues by analyzing sulfide destabilization products preserved in lavas from La Réunion Island. Iron oxide globules and coatings, typically 20–80 μm in size, were found to occur in vesicles of differentiated lavas from Piton des Neiges, and recent pumice samples from Piton de la Fournaise. Field and mineralogical evidence indicates that the iron oxides are syn-eruptive phases not resulting from hydrothermal processes. Samples were first studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy. The globules were separated, whereas the smaller spherules and coatings were concentrated by magnetic sorting and acid leaching, and samples were processed through wet chemistry. The Fe oxide phases comprise 49–74 wt.% Fe, 26–40 wt.% O, and up to 6 wt.% Cu, 811 ppm Ni, 140 ppm Bi, and 8.5 ppm Pb. Compared to the host lava, Cu, Ni, and Bi are enriched by a factor of 10 1 –10 3 . Systematic Pb isotope disequilibrium (between 500 ppm and 2.9% for 206 Pb/ 204 Pb) exists between Fe oxides and host rocks, with Fe oxides generally displaying less radiogenic ratios. Unradiogenic Pb is a typical signature of sulfide, which tends to concentrate Pb, but not its parent elements U and Th. Thus, both the chemical and isotopic compositions of the vesicle-hosted Fe oxides suggest that they are more or less direct products of the destabilization of immiscible sulfide liquids. Although Pb dominantly partitions into the gas phase during sulfide breakdown, the original Pb isotope signature of sulfide is preserved in the residual oxide. The composition estimated for the parent sulfides ( 206 Pb/ 204 Pb = 18.20–18.77, 207 Pb/ 204 Pb = 15.575, and 208 Pb/ 204 Pb = 38.2–38.8) precludes a genetic link with the La Réunion plume, and suggests a lithospheric or crustal origin. It is estimated that magma ascent velocities at Piton de la Fournaise are high enough to counterbalance the settling velocities of millimeter-size sulfides. Despite their high density, sulfide liquids are thus transferred upward during eruptions and their destabilization contributes to SO 2 emanations. Assimilation of foreign sulfides from the lithosphere can explain why SO 2 emissions sometimes (e.g., during the April 2007 eruption) exceed those predicted from the S content of melt inclusions. Long-term deformation often occurs in lava fields at volcanoes after flow emplacements. The investigation and interpretation of deformation in lava fields is one of the key factors for the assessment of volcanic hazards. As a typical Hawaiian volcano, Piton de la Fournaise volcano’s (La Réunion Island, France) main eruptive production is lava. Characteristics of the lava flows at Piton de la Fournaise, including the geometric parameters, location, and elevation, have been investigated by previous studies. However, no analysis focusing on the long-term post-emplacement deformation in its lava fields at a large spatial extent has yet been performed. One of the previous studies revealed an instability of the Eastern Flank since the March–April 2007 eruption related to post-emplacement lava subsidence. However, it was only a preliminary investigation. In this paper, an InSAR time series analysis is performed to characterize the long-term deformation in lava fields emplaced between 1998 and 2007 at Piton de la Fournaise, and to conduct an in-depth investigation over the influence of post-emplacement lava subsidence processes on the instability of the Eastern Flank. Results reveal an important regional difference in the subsidence behavior between the lava fields inside and outside of the Eastern Flank Area (EFA), which confirms that, in addition to the post-lava emplacement processes, other processes must have played a role in the observed subsidence in the EFA. The contribution of other processes is estimated to be up to ~78%. The spatial variation of the observed displacement in the EFA suggests that a set of active structures (like normal faults) could control a slip along a pre-existing structural discontinuity beneath the volcano flank. This study provides essential insights for the interpretation of the Eastern Flank motion of Piton de la Fournaise.

Benthic surveys were conducted on submerged lava beds of varying age off the east coast of Reunion in 2011. Scuba-mediated collecting and photography was undertaken within depth zones at 10 sites on four pre-1977 lava beds and those formed in 1977, 2002, 2004 and 2007. Sponges (23 species in 18 genera and 17 families), octocorals (20 species in 9 genera and 5 families) and ascidians (4 species in 4 genera and 2 families) were identified and these were differentially distributed in terms of lava bed age but not depth. Older lava formations had a greater biotic density and diversity, and colonisation of the lava beds appeared to be slow. The benthic fauna differed from that on the west coast of Reunion and the octocoral diversity was impoverished relative to published records elsewhere in the region. These characteristics of the benthos were attributed primarily to harshness of the lava reef, abrasive nature of the associated sediment and the turbulent sea conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Identifying the onset of volcano unrest and providing an unequivocal identification of volcano reawakening remain challenging problems in volcanology. At Piton de la Fournaise, renewal of eruptive activity in 2014–2015, after 41 months of quiescence and deflation, was associated with long-term continuous edifice inflation measured by GNSS. Inflation started on June 9, 2014, and its rate progressively increased through 2015. Inflation onset was rapidly followed by an eruption on June 20–21, 2014, showing that volcano reactivation can be extremely fast, even after long non-eruptive phases. This short-lived eruption involved a shallow source (1.3–1.9 km depth below the summit). The inflation that followed, and eruptions in 2015, involved a larger depth range of fluid accumulation, constrained by inverse modeling at ca. 3.9 to 1.2–1.7 km depth. This time evolution reveals that volcano reawakening was associated with continuous pressurization of the shallowest parts of its plumbing system, triggered by progressive upwards transfer of magma from greater depth. A deep magma pulse occurred in mid-April 2015 and was associated with deep seismicity (3 to 9.5 km depth) and CO 2 enrichment in fluids emitted by summit fumaroles. From this date, ground deformation accelerated and the output rates of eruptions increased, culminating in the long-lasting, large-volume, August–October eruption (~ 36 Mm 3 ). This evolution suggests that deep magma/fluid transfer through an open conduit system first provoked the expulsion of the top of the plumbing system in June 2014, and then induced the progressive vertical transfer of the entire plumbing system down to 9 km (four eruptions in 2015). The new sustained feeding of the volcano was also at the origin of the hydrothermal system perturbation and the acceleration of the eastern flank motion, which favor lateral dike propagation and the occurrence of frequent and increasingly large eruptions. On ocean basaltic volcanoes, magma transfer to the surface proceeds by subvertical ascent from the mantle lithosphere through the oceanic crust and the volcanic edifice, possibly followed by lateral propagation along rift zones. We use a 19-year-long database of volcano-tectonic seismic events together with detailed mapping of the cinder cones and eruptive fissures to determine the geometry and the dynamics of the magma paths intersecting the edifice of Piton de la Fournaise volcano. We show that the overall plumbing system, from about 30 km depth to the surface, is composed of two structural levels that feed distinct types of rift zones. The deep plumbing system is rooted between Piton des Neiges and Piton de la Fournaise volcanoes and has a N30–40 orientation. Above 20 km below sea level (bsl), the main axis switches to a N120 orientation, which permits magma transfer from the lithospheric mantle to the base of the oceanic crust, below the summit of Piton de la Fournaise. The related NW-SE rift zone is 15 km wide, linear, spotted by small to large pyroclastic cones and related lava flows and emits slightly alkaline magmas resulting from high-pressure fractionation of clinopyroxene ± olivine. This rift zone has low magma production rate of ~ 0.5–3.6 × 10 − 3 m 3 s − 1 and an eruption periodicity of around 200 years over the last 30 ka. Seismic data suggest that the long-lasting activity of this rift zone result from regional NNE-SSW extension, which reactivates inherited lithospheric faults by the effect of underplating and/or thermal erosion of the mantle lithosphere. The shallow plumbing system (< 11 km bsl) connects the base of the crust with the Central Cone. It is separated from the deep plumbing system by a relatively large aseismic zone between 8 and 11 km bsl, which may represent a deep storage level of magma. The shallow plumbing system feeds frequent, short-lived summit and flank (NE and SE flanks) eruptions along summit and outer rift zones, respectively. Summit rift zones are very active (~ 0.1–0.25 m 3 s − 1 ), short (2–3 km), and present an orthogonal pattern confined to the central active cone of Piton de la Fournaise. Outer NE and SE rift zones are much less active (~ 4–7.3 × 10 − 3 m 3 s − 1 ) and extend from inside the Enclos Fouqué caldera to bound the mobile eastern volcano flank. We show that the outer rift zones are almost aseismic and are genetically linked to the seaward flank displacements, whose most recent events where detected in 2004 and 2007. East flank sliding is itself triggered by shallow (< 2 km depth) sill intrusions. We propose that the subvertical magma intrusions along the perpendicular summit rift zones, sill intrusions, and subsequent magma injections along the outer rift zones are controlled by cycles of stress permutations. We thus tentatively propose that as for Piton de la Fournaise, the regional stress field acting on Etna and Hawaiian volcanoes is an important parameter in the control of the magma transfer along their deep plumbing system whereas the dynamics of their summit system is governed by shallow stress variations (above 5–10 km bsl) due to edifice deformation and magma transfers.
