Abstract

The threat posed by invasive non-native species worldwide requires a global approach to identify which introduced species are likely to pose an elevated risk of impact to native species and ecosystems. To inform policy, stakeholders and management decisions on global threats to aquatic ecosystems, 195 assessors representing 120 risk assessment areas across all six inhabited continents screened 819 non-native species from 15 groups of aquatic organisms (freshwater, brackish, marine plants and animals) using the Aquatic Species Invasiveness Screening Kit. This multi-lingual decision-support tool for the risk screening of aquatic organisms provides assessors with risk scores for a species under current and future climate change conditions that, following a statistically based calibration, permits the accurate classification of species into high-, medium- and low-risk categories under current and predicted climate conditions. The 1730 screenings undertaken encompassed wide geographical areas (regions, political entities, parts thereof, water bodies, river basins, lake drainage basins, and marine regions), which permitted thresholds to be identified for almost all aquatic organismal groups screened as well as for tropical, temperate and continental climate classes, and for tropical and temperate marine ecoregions. In total, 33 species were identified as posing a ‘very high risk’ of being or becoming invasive, and the scores of several of these species under current climate increased under future climate conditions, primarily due to their wide thermal tolerances. The risk thresholds determined for taxonomic groups and climate zones provide a basis against which area-specific or climate-based calibrated thresholds may be interpreted. Abstract

Aim: Invasive species are of increasing global concern. Nevertheless, the mechanisms driving furtherdistribution after the initial establishment of non-native species remain largely unresolved, especiallyin marine systems. Ocean currents can be a major driver governing range occupancy, but this hasnot been accounted for in most invasion ecology studies so far. We investigate how well initialestablishment areas are interconnected to later occupancy regions to test for the potential role ofocean currents driving secondary spread dynamics in order to infer invasion corridors and thesource–sink dynamics of a non-native holoplanktonic biological probe species on a continental scale.Location: Western Eurasia.Time period: 1980s–2016.Major taxa studied: ‘Comb jelly’ Mnemiopsis leidyi.Methods: Based on 12,400 geo-referenced occurrence data, we reconstruct the invasion historyof M. leidyi in western Eurasia. We model ocean currents and calculate their stability to match thetemporal and spatial spread dynamics with large-scale connectivity patterns via ocean currents.Additionally, genetic markers are used to test the predicted connectivity between subpopulations.Results: Ocean currents can explain secondary spread dynamics, matching observed range expansionsand the timing of first occurrence of our holoplanktonic non-native biological probe species,leading to invasion corridors in western Eurasia. In northern Europe, regional extinctions after coldwinters were followed by rapid recolonizations at a speed of up to 2,000 km per season. Abstract

Three different models were applied to study the reproduction, survival and dispersal of Mnemiopsis leidyi in the Scheldt estuaries and the southern North Sea: a high-resolution particle tracking model with passive particles, a low-resolution particle tracking model with a reproduction model coupled to a biogeochemical model, and a dynamic energy budget (DEB) model. The results of the models, each with its strengths and weaknesses, suggest the following conceptual situation: (i) the estuaries possess enough retention capability to keep an overwintering population, and enough exchange with coastal waters of the North Sea to seed offshore populations; (ii) M. leidyi can survive in the North Sea, and be transported over considerable distances, thus facilitating connectivity between coastal embayments; (iii) under current climatic conditions, M. leidyi may not be able to reproduce in large numbers in coastal and offshore waters of the North Sea, but this may change with global warming; however, this result is subject to substantial uncertainty. Further quantitative observational work is needed on the effects of temperature, salinity and food availability on reproduction and on mortality at different life stages to improve models such as used here.

Abstract

© 2015 Kopf et al. Ocean Sampling Day was initiated by the EU-funded Micro B3 (Marine Microbial Biodiversity, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology) project to obtain a snapshot of the marine microbial biodiversity and function of the world's oceans. It is a simultaneous global mega-sequencing campaign aiming to generate the largest standardized microbial data set in a single day. This will be achievable only through the coordinated efforts of an Ocean Sampling Day Consortium, supportive partnerships and networks between sites. This commentary outlines the establishment, function and aims of the Consortium and describes our vision for a sustainable study of marine microbial communities and their embedded functional traits.

Abstract

International audience; Nous montrons que les systèmes fibrés présentent des caractéristiques remarquables pour la génération et le contrôle d'impulsions rares et intenses similaires aux vagues scélérates océaniques. En particulier, l'amplificateur Raman faiblement dispersif pompé par une onde incohérente a permis de mettre en évidence l'apparition d'ondes scélérates optiques. Un bon accord théorie - expérience est observé.

Les impulsions paraboliques ont généré depuis leur mise en évidence théorique et expérimentale [1] un intérêt croissant. En effet, leur profil d'intensité parabolique associé à une dérive de fréquence linéaire leur permet de résister aux effets du wave-breaking optique [2] qui dégrade habituellement la forme des impulsions ultrabrèves de forte puissance se propageant dans des fibres optiques.
