Integrated photodetectors based on transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) face the challenge of growing their high-quality crystals directly on chips or transferring them to the desired locations of components by applying multi-step processes. Herein, we show that vertically oriented polycrystalline thin films of MoS2 and WS2 grown by sulfurization of Mo and W sputtered on highly doped Si are robust solutions to achieve on-chip photodetectors with a sensitivity of up to 1 mA W−1 and an ultrafast response time in the sub-μs regime by simply probing the device in a vertical arrangement, i.e., parallel to the basal planes of TMDs. These results are two orders of magnitude better than those measured earlier in lateral probing setups having both electrodes on top of vertically aligned polycrystalline TMD films. Accordingly, our study suggests that easy-to-grow vertically oriented polycrystalline thin film structures may be viable components in fast photodetectors as well as in imaging, sensing and telecommunication devices.

Several different methods are established for the analysis of gases, including optical spectroscopy, photoacoustic spectroscopy as well as colorimetric and resistive sensing, the measurements systems are either too complex or have limited sensitivity. In particular, when the goal is to apply a large number of sensors in networks, it is highly desirable to have devices that are simple, have low cost and energy consumption, yet sensitive and selective to monitor analytes even in traces. Herein, we propose a new type of resistive sensor device based on a composite of single-wall carbon nanotubes and an ion-in-conjugation polymer, poly(1,5-diaminonaphthalene-squaraine), capable of detecting H2S and NH3 in air even at room temperature with a theoretical concentration limit of ∼1 ppb and ∼7 ppb, respectively. Density functional theory calculations revealed that H atoms of the analytes and O atoms of the polymer chain interact and form hydrogen bonds, and the electron withdrawal from the gas molecules by the polymer chain results in the change of its electrical conductivity. To demonstrate the feasibility of the new nanocomposites in sensing, we show the devices for monitoring food safety with good sensor stability of operation for at least 3 months of period of time.

The continuously growing number of short-life electronics equipment inherently results in a massive amount of problematic waste, which poses risks of environmental pollution, endangers human health, and causes socioeconomic problems. Hence, to mitigate these negative impacts, it is our common interest to substitute conventional materials (polymers and metals) used in electronics devices with their environmentally benign renewable counterparts, wherever possible, while considering the aspects of functionality, manufacturability, and cost. To support such an effort, in this study, we explore the use of biodegradable bioplastics, such as polylactic acid (PLA), its blends with polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and composites with pyrolyzed lignin (PL), and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), in conjunction with processes typical in the fabrication of electronics components, including plasma treatment, dip coating, inkjet and screen printing, as well as hot mixing, extrusion, and molding. We show that after a short argon plasma treatment of the surface of hot-blown PLA-PHB blend films, percolating networks of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) having sheet resistance well below 1 kΩ/□ can be deposited by dip coating to make electrode plates of capacitive touch sensors. We also demonstrate that the bioplastic films, as flexible dielectric substrates, are suitable for depositing conductive micropatterns of SWCNTs and Ag (1 kΩ/□ and 1 Ω/□, respectively) by means of inkjet and screen printing, with potential in printed circuit board applications. In addition, we exemplify compounded and molded composites of PLA with PL and MWCNTs as excellent candidates for electromagnetic interference shielding materials in the K-band radio frequencies (18.0—26.5 GHz) with shielding effectiveness of up to 40 and 46 dB, respectively.

Articular cartilage is a highly organized tissue with very limited regenerative capacities. One limitation to mimic cartilage structure in tissue engineering is due to specific orientation of chondrocytes. Here, we use vertically aligned multi-wall carbon nanotubes (VA-MWCNT) micropillars to achieve unidirectional orientation of chondrocytes. We demonstrate that the attachment, proliferation and extracellular matrix (ECM) production by the chondrocytes is enhanced on VA-MWCNT micropillars compared to controls. The nanostructures offered by the VA-MWCNT allow the chondrocytes to anchor at cellular structure level, while mechanical flexibility of the VA-MWCNT micropillars mimics the cartilage’s natural ECM Young’s modulus. We exploit these features to extrapolate the contractile forces exerted by the chondrocytes on the micropillars. Our findings will guide the design of VA-MWCNT templates to model cell’s contractile forces. Furthermore, the capability of VA-MWCNTs to induce unidirectional chondrocytes orientation open new perspectives in cartilage tissue engineering.

Energy storage devices such as supercapacitors of high performance are in great need due to the continuous expansion of digitalization and related devices for mobile electronics, autonomous sensors, and vehicles of different kinds. However, the nonrenewable resources and often complex preparation processes associated with electrode materials and structures pose limited scale-up in production and difficulties in versatile utilization of the devices. Here, free-standing and flexible carbon nanofiber networks derived from renewable and abundant bioresources are demonstrated. By a simple optimization of carbonization, the carbon nanofiber networks reach a large surface area of 1670 m² g–1 and excellent specific gravimetric capacitance of ∼240 F g–1, outperforming many other nanostructured carbon, activated carbon, and even those decorated with metal oxides. The remarkable electrochemical performance and flexibility of the green carbon networks enable an all-solid-state supercapacitor device, which displays a device capacitance of 60.4 F g–1 with a corresponding gravimetric energy density of 8.4 Wh kg–1 while maintaining good mechanical properties.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are known for their excellent mechanical, electrical and thermal properties, that have fostered a vast number of applications during the last two decades, from composites, electrodes and nanoelectonics components, to sensors and biological scaffolds. Direct integration of CNTs into devices is not straightforward, as high growth temperatures (above 600 °C) challenge the chemical and thermal stability of substrates, catalysts and other nearby materials or components. However, by decreasing growth temperature and/or working out protocols that take into account the thermal stability of the materials involved, it is possible to create several new types of architectures and devices with functionalities not shown before. In this work, we show that, with selection of the appropriate substrate, diffusion barrier and catalyst materials, direct growth of functional CNT films and their micropatterns may be achieved, not only on Si chips, but also on other atypical surfaces, using chemical vapor deposition. This thesis explores low-temperature CNT synthesis over bi- and trimetallic catalysts, and investigates the effect of diffusion barrier layers on the electrical properties of substrate-to-CNT contacts. On one hand, the lowest achieved CNT synthesis temperature (400 °C) is compatible with most silicon technologies, thus enabling direct integration of CNTs with materials and devices with low thermal budgets. On the other hand, the results of diffusion barrier studies helped us in designing and demonstrating on-chip micropatterned CNT structures for super and pseudocapacitor electrodes. In addition, we also show a method for maskless growth of CNT micropatterns using laser-treated steel and superalloy surfaces, whose surface diffusion properties change as a result of barrier-type metal oxide formation. Furthermore, we present CNT growth on carbon materials and demonstrate entirely carbon-based hierarchical composites for electromagnetic interference shielding applications, exhibiting outstanding absorption-based shielding performance. The results presented in this thesis are expected to contribute to a further expansion of CNT-based technologies, in particular with potential for future advances in high-frequency devices (arrays, amplifiers and shielding materials), energy materials (electrodes and scaffolds), as well as in nanoelectromechanical systems (sensors and actuators). Tiivistelmä Hiilinanoputket tunnetaan niiden erinomaisista mekaanisista, sähköisistä ja termisistä ominaisuuksista, joita on hyödynnetty lukuisissa sovelluksissa viimeisen kahden vuosikymmenen aikana alkaen komposiiteista, elektrodeista, nanoelektroniikkakomponenteista ja sensoreista aina biologisiin tukirakenteisiin. Nanoputkien synteesi suoraan laitteessa ei ole suoraviivaista, sillä korkeat, yli 600 °C synteesilämpötilat asettavat haasteita substraatin, katalyytin sekä muiden lähellä olevien materiaalien ja komponenttien kemialliselle ja termiselle vakaudelle. Alentamalla synteesilämpötilaa ja/tai kehittämällä termisen vakauden huomioivia menetelmiä on mahdollista luoda uudenlaisia arkkitehtuureja ja sovelluksia ennennäkemättömillä ominaisuuksilla. Tässä työssä osoitetaan, että sopivan substraatin, diffuusiosuojan ja katalyyttimateriaalin valitsemalla funktionaalisten hiilinanoputkien synteesi on mahdollista piin lisäksi myös muille, epätavallisille pinnoille käyttäen kemiallista kaasufaasipinnoitusta. Väitöstyössä käsitellään hiilinanoputkien matalan lämpötilan synteesiä hyödyntäen kaksi- ja kolmimetallisia katalyyttejä sekä tutkitaan diffuusiosuojakerroksen sähköistä vaikutusta substraatin ja hiilinanoputkien väliseen kontaktiin. Alin saavutettu synteesilämpötila (400 °C) on yhteensopiva useimpien piiteknologioiden kanssa, mikä mahdollistaa nanoputkien suoran integroinnin matalaa lämpötilaa edellyttäville materiaaleille. Työssä tutkitun diffuusiosuojakerroksen kehitys mahdollisti myös piisirun päälle toteutettujen hiilinanoputkipohjaisten super- ja pseudokondensaattorielektrodien demonstroinnin. Lisäksi työssä esitetään menetelmä, jossa laserkäsittelemällä teräs- ja supermetalliseospinta, jonka avulla mikrokuvioitu hiilinanoputkien kasvu ilman litografiaprosessia on mahdollista. Viimeisenä työssä esitetään hiilinanoputkien synteesi suoraan toiselle hiilimateriaalille ja demonstroidaan täysin hiilipohjainen, hierarkkinen komposiittimateriaali erinomaisella absorptioon perustuvalla suojauskyvyllä sähkömagneettisiin häiriösuojaussovelluksiin. Väitöstyössä esitettyjen tulosten odotetaan osaltaan edistävän hiilinanoputkipohjaisten teknologioiden kehitystä erityisesti korkean taajuuden laitteissa, energiamateriaaleissa sekä nanosähkömekaanisissa järjestelmissä.

In this study, lignin-based carbon nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning, followed by carbonization at four different temperatures (800, 1,000, 1,200, and 1,400°C). The surface and bulk elemental compositions were analyzed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. In addition, the structure of the prepared carbon nanofibers was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, focused ion beam microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Results showed that all carbon nanofibers, irrespective of the carbonization temperature, had continuous and homogeneous structures. They were dense and no phase separation was observed. Moreover, the nanofibers carbonized at 800°C or 1,000°C predominately contained amorphous carbon and some non-carbon elements. When the carbonization was performed at a higher temperature (1,200°C or 1,400°C), non-carbon elements were effectively removed and nanocrystalline graphite was formed, indicating that high temperature carbonization facilitated the formation of ordered carbon structures.

Catalyst size affects the overall kinetics and mechanism of almost all heterogeneous chemical reactions. Since the functional sensing materials in resistive chemical sensors are practically the very same nanomaterials as the catalysts in heterogeneous chemistry, a plausible question arises: Is there any effect of the catalyst size on the sensor properties? Our study attempts to give an insight into the problem by analyzing the response and sensitivity of resistive H₂ sensors based on WO₃ nanowire supported Pt nanoparticles having size of 1.5±0.4 nm, 6.2±0.8 nm, 3.7±0.5 nm and 8.3±1.3 nm. The results show that Pt nanoparticles of larger size are more active in H₂ sensing than their smaller counterparts and indicate that the detection mechanism is more complex than just considering the number of surface atoms of the catalyst.

Structural, interfacial, optical, and transport properties of large-area MoS₂ ultra-thin films on BN-buffered silicon substrates fabricated using magnetron sputtering are investigated. A relatively simple growth strategy is demonstrated here that simultaneously promotes superior interfacial and bulk MoS₂ properties. Few layers of MoS₂ are established using x-ray reflectivity, diffraction, ellipsometry, and Raman spectroscopy measurements. Layer-specific modeling of optical constants show very good agreement with first-principles calculations. Conductivity measurements reveal that few-layer MoS₂ films are more conducting than many-layer films. Photo-conductivity measurements reveal that the sputter deposited MoS₂ films compare favorably with other large-area methods. Our work illustrates that sputtering is a viable route for large-area device applications using transition metal dichalcogenides.

van der Waals solids have been recognized as highly photosensitive materials that compete conventional Si and compound semiconductor based devices. While 2-dimensional nanosheets of single and multiple layers and 1-dimensional nanowires of molybdenum and tungsten chalcogenides have been studied, their nanostructured derivatives with complex morphologies are not explored yet. Here, we report on the electrical and photosensitive properties of WS₂ nanowire-nanoflake hybrid materials we developed lately. We probe individual hybrid nanostructured particles along the structure using focused ion beam deposited Pt contacts. Further, we use conductive atomic force microscopy to analyze electrical behavior across the nanostructure in the transverse direction. The electrical measurements are complemented by in situ laser beam illumination to explore the photoresponse of the nanohybrids in the visible optical spectrum. Photodetectors with responsivity up to ∼0.4 AW⁻¹ are demonstrated outperforming graphene as well as most of the other transition metal dichalcogenide based devices.
