Smart indoor tourist attractions, such as smart museums and aquariums, require a significant investment in indoor localization devices. The use of Global Positioning Systems on smartphones is unsuitable for scenarios where dense materials such as concrete and metal blocks weaken GPS signals, which is most often the case in indoor tourist attractions. With the help of deep learning, indoor localization can be done region by region using smartphone images. This approach requires no investment in infrastructure and reduces the cost and time needed to turn museums and aquariums into smart museums or smart aquariums. In this paper, we propose using deep learning algorithms to classify locations based on smartphone camera images for indoor tourist attractions. We evaluate our proposal in a real-world scenario in Brazil. We extensively collect images from ten different smartphones to classify biome-themed fish tanks in the Pantanal Biopark, creating a new dataset of 3654 images. We tested seven state-of-the-art neural networks, three of them based on transformers. On average, we achieved a precision of about 90% and a recall and f-score of about 89%. Identifying plantation lines in aerial images of agricultural landscapes is re-quired for many automatic farming processes. Deep learning-based networks are among the most prominent methods to learn such patterns and extract this type of information from diverse imagery conditions. However, even state-of-the-art methods may stumble in complex plantation patterns. Here, we propose a deep learning approach based on graphs to detect plantation lines in UAV-based RGB imagery, presenting a challenging scenario containing spaced plants. The first module of our method extracts a feature map throughout the backbone, which consists of the initial layers of the VGG16. This feature map is used as an input to the Knowledge Estimation Module (KEM), organized in three concatenated branches for detecting 1) the plant positions, 2) the plantation lines, and 3) the displacement vectors between the plants. A graph modeling is applied considering each plant position on the image as vertices, and edges are formed between two vertices (i.e. plants). Finally, the edge is classified as pertaining to a certain plantation line based on three probabilities (higher than 0.5): i) in visual features obtained from the backbone; ii) a chance that the edge pixels belong to a line, from the KEM step; and iii) an alignment of the displacement vectors with the edge, also from the KEM step. Experiments were conducted initially in corn plantations with different growth stages and patterns with aerial RGB imagery to present the advantages of adopting each module. We assessed the generalization capability in the other two cultures (orange and eucalyptus) datasets. The proposed method was compared against state-of-the-art deep learning methods and achieved superior performance with a significant margin considering all three datasets. The Dendrocephalus brasiliensis, a native species from South America, is a freshwater crustacean well explored in conservational and productive activities. Its main characteristics are its rusticity and resistance cysts production, in which the hatching requires a period of dehydration. Independent of the species utilization nature, it is essential to manipulate its cysts, such as the counting using microscopes. Manually counting is a difficult task, prone to errors, and that also very time-consuming. In this paper, we propose an automatized approach for the detection and counting of Dendrocephalus brasiliensis cysts from images captured by a digital microscope. For this purpose, we built the DBrasiliensis dataset, a repository with 246 images containing 5141 cysts of Dendrocephalus brasiliensis. Then, we trained two state-of-the-art object detection methods, YOLOv3 (You Only Look Once) and Faster R-CNN (Region-based Convolutional Neural Networks), on DBrasiliensis dataset in order to compare them under both cyst detection and counting tasks. Experiments showed evidence that YOLOv3 is superior to Faster R-CNN, achieving an accuracy rate of 83,74%, R2 of 0.88, RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) of 3.49, and MAE (Mean Absolute Error) of 2.24 on cyst detection and counting. Moreover, we showed that is possible to infer the number of cysts of a substrate, with known weight, by performing the automated counting of some of its samples. In conclusion, the proposed approach using YOLOv3 is adequate to detect and count Dendrocephalus brasiliensis cysts. Detection and classification of tree species from remote sensing data were performed using mainly multispectral and hyperspectral images and Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) data. Despite the comparatively lower cost and higher spatial resolution, few studies focused on images captured by Red-Green-Blue (RGB) sensors. Besides, the recent years have witnessed an impressive progress of deep learning methods for object detection. Motivated by this scenario, we proposed and evaluated the usage of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based methods combined with Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) high spatial resolution RGB imagery for the detection of law protected tree species. Three state-of-the-art object detection methods were evaluated: Faster Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (Faster R-CNN), YOLOv3 and RetinaNet. A dataset was built to assess the selected methods, comprising 392 RBG images captured from August 2018 to February 2019, over a forested urban area in midwest Brazil. The target object is an important tree species threatened by extinction known as Dipteryx alata Vogel (Fabaceae). The experimental analysis delivered average precision around 92% with an associated processing times below 30 miliseconds.

This article contains the data related to the research article "Long-term forecast of energy commodities price using machine learning" (Herrera et al., 2019). The datasets contain monthly prices of six main energy commodities covering a large period of nearly four decades. Four methods are applied, i.e. a hybridization of traditional econometric models, artificial neural networks, random forests, and the no-change method. Data is divided into 80-20% ratio for training and test respectively and RMSE, MAPE, and M-DM test used for performance evaluation. Other methods can be applied to the dataset and used as a benchmark.

Assessing the parental genetic differences and their subsequent prediction of progeny performance is an important first step to assure the efficiency of any breeding program. In this study, we estimate the genetic divergence in Eucalyptus camaldulensis based on the morphological traits of 132 progenies grown in a savanna biome. Thus, a field experiment was performed using a randomized block design and five replications to compare divergences in total height, commercial height, diameter at breast height, stem form and survival rate at 48 months. Tocher's clustering method was performed using the Mahalanobis and Euclidian distances. The Mahalanobis distance seemed more reliable for the assessed parameters and clustered all of the progenies into fourteen major groups. The most similar progenies (86 accessions) were clustered into Group I, while the most dissimilar (1 progeny) represented Group XIV. The divergence analysis indicated that promising crosses could be made between progenies allocated in different groups for high genetic divergence and for favorable morphological traits., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

The classification of pollen species and types is an important task in many areas like forensic palynology, archaeological palynology and melissopalynology. This paper presents the first annotated image dataset for the Brazilian Savannah pollen types that can be used to train and test computer vision based automatic pollen classifiers. A first baseline human and computer performance for this dataset has been established using 805 pollen images of 23 pollen types. In order to access the computer performance, a combination of three feature extractors and four machine learning techniques has been implemented, fine tuned and tested. The results of these tests are also presented in this paper.
