Search

Charge transport in disordered two-dimensional (2D) systems showcases a myriad of unique phenomenologies that highlight different aspects of the underlying quantum dynamics. Electrons in such systems undergo a crossover from ballistic propagation to Anderson localization, contingent on the system's effective coherence length. Between the extended and localized phases lies a diffusive crossover in which the charge conductivity is properly defined. The numerical observation of this regime has remained elusive because it requires fully coherent transport to be simulated in systems whose dimensions are sufficiently large to meaningfully split the mean-free path and localization length scales. To address this challenge, we employed a novel linear scaling time-resolved approach that enabled us to derive the dc-transport characteristics and observe the three expected 2D transport regimes - ballistic, diffusive, and localized., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures

Topological semimetals are a class of novel three-dimensional (3D) electronic phases that feature topologically protected conical band-touchings at the Fermi level. These band-touching points are monopoles of Berry curvature in momentum space and effectively realize (3+1)-dimensional Weyl fermions as emergent quasiparticles. Such features are robust to perturbations but not completely insensitive to them. In this thesis, we explore the yet fertile ground of disordered Weyl semimetals (WSMs), most notably by analysing the effects of on-site random fields, random smooth potential regions, point-like scalar impurities, and lattice point-defects in their electronic structure and electrodynamic properties., Comment: PhD Thesis (U. It has long been known that quantum particles moving in a periodic lattice and subject to a constant force field undergo an oscillatory motion that is referred to as Bloch Oscillations (BOs). However, it is also known that, under quite general conditions, a biased mesoscopic system connected to leads should settle in a steady-state regime characterized by a constant electric current (described by the Landauer formula). Since both effects are driven by a constant field, these two quantum transport phenomena appear to be at odds with each other. Here, we solve this apparent contradiction by theoretically demonstrating that BOs can actually be observed in biased two-terminal mesoscopic devices as a transient phenomenon, which relaxes for long times to a steady-state current that agrees with the Landauer formula. Furthermore, we also combine analytical and numerical time-evolution results for a one-dimensional tight-binding model of a biased two-terminal mesoscopic system, in order to characterize the decay times of the transient BOs and establish the conditions under which they can occur., Comment: 13 pages + 12 Figures. Using the nascent concept of quantum spin-transfer torque [A. Zholud et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 119}, 257201 (2017); M. D. Petrovi\'{c} {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. X {\bf 11}, 021062 (2021)], we demonstrate that a current pulse can be harnessed to entangle quantum localized spins of two spatially separated ferromagnets (FMs) which are initially unentangled. The envisaged setup comprises a spin-polarizer (FM$_p$) and a spin-analyzer (FM$_a$) FM layers separated by normal metal (NM) spacer. The injection of a current pulse into the device leads to a time-dependent superposition of many-body states characterized by a high degree of entanglement between the spin degrees of freedom of the two distant FM layers. The non-equilibrium dynamics are due to the transfer of spin angular momentum from itinerant electrons to the localized spins via a quantum spin-torque mechanism that remains active even for {\em collinear but antiparallel} arrangements of the FM$_p$ and FM$_a$ magnetizations (a situation in which the conventional spin-torque is absent). We quantify the mixed-state entanglement generated between the FM layers by tracking the time-evolution of the full density matrix and analyzing the build-up of the mutual logarithmic negativity over time. The effect of decoherence and dissipation in the FM layers due to coupling to bosonic baths at finite temperature, the use of multi-electron current pulses and the dependence on the number of spins are also considered in an effort to ascertain the robustness of our predictions under realistic conditions. Fast interpolation-grid frameworks facilitate an efficient and flexible evaluation of higher-order predictions for any choice of parton distribution functions or value of the strong coupling $\alpha_s$. They constitute an essential tool for the extraction of parton distribution functions and Standard Model parameters, as well as studies of the dependence of cross sections on the renormalisation and factorisation scales. The APPLfast project provides a generic interface between the parton-level Monte Carlo generator NNLOJET and both the APPLgrid and the fastNLO libraries for the grid interpolation. The extension of the project to include hadron-hadron collider processes at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD is presented, together with an application for jet production at the LHC., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, 6 tables

We present the first theoretical study of transport properties of Weyl semimetals with point defects. Focusing on a class of time-reversal symmetric Weyl lattice models, we show that dilute lattice vacancies induce a finite density of quasi-localized states at and near the nodal energy, causing strong modifications to the low-energy spectrum. This generates novel transport effects, namely (i) an oscillatory behaviour of the dc-conductivity with the charge carrier density in the absence of magnetic fields, and (ii) a plateau-shaped dissipative optical response for photon frequencies below the inter-band threshold, $E_{F}\!\lesssim\!\hbar\omega\!\lesssim\!2E_{F}$.Our results provide a path to engineer unconventional quantum transport effects in Weyl semimetals by means of common point defects., Comment: 6 pages + 1 page of Supplementary Material; 4 + 2 Figures. The electronic structure of a cubic $\mathcal{T}$-symmetric Weyl semimetal is analysed in the presence of atomic-sized vacancy defects. Isolated vacancies are shown to generate nodal bound states with $r^{{\scriptscriptstyle -2}}$ asymptotic tails, even when immersed in a weakly disordered environment. These states show up as a significantly enhanced nodal density of states which, as the concentration of defects is increased, reshapes into a nodal peak that is broadened by inter-vacancy hybridisation into a comb of satellite resonances at finite energies. Our results establish point defects as a crucial source of elastic scattering that leads to nontrivial modifications in the electronic structure of Weyl semimetals., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures. An overwhelming number of theoretical predictions for hadron colliders require parton distribution functions (PDFs), which are an important ingredient of theory infrastructure for the next generation of high-energy experiments. This whitepaper summarizes the status and future prospects for determination of high-precision PDFs applicable in a wide range of energies and experiments, in particular in precision tests of the Standard Model and in new physics searches at the high-luminosity Large Hadron Collider and Electron-Ion Collider. We discuss the envisioned advancements in experimental measurements, QCD theory, global analysis methodology, and computing that are necessary to bring unpolarized PDFs in the nucleon to the N2LO and N3LO accuracy in the QCD coupling strength. Special attention is given to the new tasks that emerge in the era of the precision PDF analysis, such as those focusing on the robust control of systematic factors both in experimental measurements and theoretical computations. Various synergies between experimental and theoretical studies of the hadron structure are explored, including opportunities for studying PDFs for nuclear and meson targets, PDFs with electroweak contributions or dependence on the transverse momentum, for incisive comparisons between phenomenological models for the PDFs and computations on discrete lattice, and for cross-fertilization with machine learning/AI approaches. We provide an overview of the status of Monte-Carlo event generators for high-energy particle physics. Guided by the experimental needs and requirements, we highlight areas of active development, and opportunities for future improvements. Particular emphasis is given to physics models and algorithms that are employed across a variety of experiments. These common themes in event generator development lead to a more comprehensive understanding of physics at the highest energies and intensities, and allow models to be tested against a wealth of data that have been accumulated over the past decades. A cohesive approach to event generator development will allow these models to be further improved and systematic uncertainties to be reduced, directly contributing to future experimental success. Event generators are part of a much larger ecosystem of computational tools. They typically involve a number of unknown model parameters that must be tuned to experimental data, while maintaining the integrity of the underlying physics models. Making both these data, and the analyses with which they have been obtained accessible to future users is an essential aspect of open science and data preservation. The HERAPDF2.0 ensemble of parton distribution functions (PDFs) was introduced in 2015. The final stage is presented, a next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) analysis of the HERA data on inclusive deep inelastic $ep$ scattering together with jet data as published by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations. A perturbative QCD fit, simultaneously of $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$ and and the PDFs, was performed with the result $\alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1156 \pm 0.0011~{\rm (exp)}~ ^{+0.0001}_{-0.0002}~ {\rm (model}$ ${\rm +~parameterisation)}~ \pm 0.0029~{\rm (scale)}$. The PDF sets of HERAPDF2.0Jets NNLO were determined with separate fits using two fixed values of $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$, $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)=0.1155$ and $0.118$, since the latter value was already chosen for the published HERAPDF2.0 NNLO analysis based on HERA inclusive DIS data only. The different sets of PDFs are presented, evaluated and compared. The consistency of the PDFs determined with and without the jet data demonstrates the consistency of HERA inclusive and jet-production cross-section data. The inclusion of the jet data reduced the uncertainty on the gluon PDF. Predictions based on the PDFs of HERAPDF2.0Jets NNLO give an excellent description of the jet-production data used as input., Comment: 43 pages, 24 figures, to be submitted to Eur. Phys. J. C

The concept of local pressure is pivotal to describe many important physical phenomena, such as buoyancy or atmospheric phenomena, which always require the consideration of space-varying pressure fields. These fields have precise definitions within the phenomenology of hydro-thermodynamics, but a simple and pedagogical microscopic description based on Statistical Mechanical is still lacking in present literature. In this paper, we propose a new microscopic definition of the local pressure field inside a classical fluid, relying on a local barometer potential that is built into the many-particle Hamiltonian. Such a setup allows the pressure to be locally defined, at an arbitrary point inside the fluid, simply by doing a standard ensemble average of the radial force exerted by the barometer potential on the gas' particles. This setup is further used to give a microscopic derivation of the generalized Archimedes's buoyancy principle, in the presence of an arbitrary external field. As instructive examples, buoyancy force fields are calculated for ideal fluids in the presence of: i) a uniform force field, ii) a spherically symmetric harmonic confinement field, and iii) a centrifugal rotating frame., Comment: Pedagogical Paper with 9 pages, 3 figures. We propose a fiber-based environmental sensor that exploits the reflection phase shift tunability provided by the use of layered coatings composed of dielectric slabs spaced by conducting membranes. A transfer matrix study is done in a simplified theoretical model, for which an enhanced sensitivity of the reflection interference pattern to the output medium is demonstrated, in the typical refractive index range of liquid media. An experimental configuration using a cascaded Fabry-Perot microcavity coated by a graphene oxide/polyethylenimine (GO/PEI) multilayered structure is demonstrated. Its cost effective chemical production method makes graphene oxide-based hybrid coatings excellent candidates for future real-life sensing devices., Comment: 15 Pages + 12 Figures. In this report, we present a discussion about different frameworks to perform precise higher-order computations for high-energy physics. These approaches implement novel strategies to deal with infrared and ultraviolet singularities in quantum field theories. Dirac-Weyl semimetals are unique three-dimensional (3D) phases of matter with gapless electrons and novel electrodynamic properties believed to be robust against weak perturbations. Here, we unveil the crucial influence of the disorder statistics and impurity diversity in the stability of incompressible electrons in 3D semimetals. Focusing on the critical role played by rare impurity configurations, we show that the abundance of low-energy resonances in the presence of diluted random potential wells endows rare localized zero-energy modes with statistical significance, thus lifting the nodal density of states. The strong nonperturbative effect here reported converts the 3D Dirac-Weyl semimetal into a compressible metal even at the lowest impurity densities. The Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) is designed to move the field of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the energy and intensity frontier of particle physics. Exploiting energy recovery technology, it collides a novel, intense electron beam with a proton or ion beam from the High Luminosity--Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent electron-proton and proton-proton operation. This report represents an update of the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) of the LHeC, published in 2012. It comprises new results on parton structure of the proton and heavier nuclei, QCD dynamics, electroweak and top-quark physics. It is shown how the LHeC will open a new chapter of nuclear particle physics in extending the accessible kinematic range in lepton-nucleus scattering by several orders of magnitude. Due to enhanced luminosity, large energy and the cleanliness of the hadronic final states, the LHeC has a strong Higgs physics programme and its own discovery potential for new physics. Building on the 2012 CDR, the report represents a detailed updated design of the energy recovery electron linac (ERL) including new lattice, magnet, superconducting radio frequency technology and further components. Challenges of energy recovery are described and the lower energy, high current, 3-turn ERL facility, PERLE at Orsay, is presented which uses the LHeC characteristics serving as a development facility for the design and operation of the LHeC. An updated detector design is presented corresponding to the acceptance, resolution and calibration goals which arise from the Higgs and parton density function physics programmes. The paper also presents novel results on the Future Circular Collider in electron-hadron mode, FCC-eh, which utilises the same ERL technology to further extend the reach of DIS to even higher centre-of-mass energies., Comment: 373 pages, many figures, to be published by J. In this paper, we study the emergence of a Landauer transport regime from the quantum-mechanical dynamics of free electrons in a disordered tight-binding chain, which is coupled to finite leads with open boundaries. Both partitioned and partition-free initial conditions are analyzed and seen to give rise, for large enough leads, to the same spatially uniform quasi-steady-state current, which agrees with the Landauer value. The quasi-steady-state regime is preceded by a transient regime, which last for a time proportional to the length of the disordered sample, and followed by recursions, after a time that is proportional to the lead size. These theoretical predictions may be of interest to future experiments on transport of fermionic ultra-cold atoms across optical lattices. We also observe finite-size current oscillations, superimposed on the quasi-steady-state, whose behavior depends crucially on the conditions initially imposed on the system. Finally, we show how a time-resolved Kubo formula is able to reproduce this Landauer transport regime, as the leads grow bigger., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures

This document collects a written summary of all contributions presented at the workshop "$\alpha_s$(2019): Precision measurements of the strong coupling" held at ECT* (Trento) in Feb. 11--15, 2019. The workshop explored in depth the latest developments on the determination of the QCD coupling $\alpha_s$ from the key categories where high precision measurements are available: (i) lattice QCD, (ii) hadronic $\tau$ decays, (iii) deep-inelastic scattering and parton distribution functions, (iv) event shapes, jet cross sections, and other hadronic final-states in $e^+e^-$ collisions, (v) Z boson and W boson hadronic decays, and (vi) hadronic final states in p-p collisions. The status of the current theoretical and experimental uncertainties associated to each extraction method, and future perspectives were thoroughly reviewed. The extension of interpolation-grid frameworks for perturbative QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) is presented for deep inelastic scattering (DIS) processes. A fast and flexible evaluation of higher-order predictions for any a posteriori choice of parton distribution functions (PDFs) or value of the strong coupling constant is essential in iterative fitting procedures to extract PDFs and Standard Model parameters as well as for a detailed study of the scale dependence. The APPLfast project, described here, provides a generic interface between the parton-level Monte Carlo program NNLOJET and both the APPLgrid and fastNLO libraries for the production of interpolation grids at NNLO accuracy. Details of the interface for DIS processes are presented together with the required interpolation grids at NNLO, which are made available. They cover numerous inclusive jet measurements by the H1 and ZEUS experiments at HERA. The possibility of having a delocalization transition in the 1D de Moura-Lyra class of models (having a power-spectrum $\propto q^{-\alpha})$ has been the object of a long standing discussion in the literature, filled with ambiguities. In this letter, we report the first numerical evidences that such a transition happens at $\alpha=1$, where the localization length (measured from the scaling of the conductance) is shown to diverge as $(1-\alpha)^{-1}$. The persistent finite-size scaling of the data is shown to be caused by a very slow convergence of the nearest-neighbor correlator to its infinite-size limit, and controlled by the choice of a proper scaling parameter. This last conclusion leads to the re-interpretation of the localization in these models to be caused by an effective Anderson uncorrelated model at small length-scales. The successful operation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the excellent performance of the ATLAS, CMS, LHCb and ALICE detectors in Run-1 and Run-2 with $pp$ collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV as well as the giant leap in precision calculations and modeling of fundamental interactions at hadron colliders have allowed an extraordinary breadth of physics studies including precision measurements of a variety physics processes. The LHC results have so far confirmed the validity of the Standard Model of particle physics up to unprecedented energy scales and with great precision in the sectors of strong and electroweak interactions as well as flavour physics, for instance in top quark physics. The upgrade of the LHC to a High Luminosity phase (HL-LHC) at 14 TeV center-of-mass energy with 3 ab$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity will probe the Standard Model with even greater precision and will extend the sensitivity to possible anomalies in the Standard Model, thanks to a ten-fold larger data set, upgraded detectors and expected improvements in the theoretical understanding. This document summarises the physics reach of the HL-LHC in the realm of strong and electroweak interactions and top quark physics, and provides a glimpse of the potential of a possible further upgrade of the LHC to a 27 TeV $pp$ collider, the High-Energy LHC (HE-LHC), assumed to accumulate an integrated luminosity of 15 ab$^{-1}$., Comment: Report from Working Group 1 on the Physics of the HL-LHC, and Perspectives at the HE-LHC

The future opportunities for high-density QCD studies with ion and proton beams at the LHC are presented. Four major scientific goals are identified: the characterisation of the macroscopic long wavelength Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) properties with unprecedented precision, the investigation of the microscopic parton dynamics underlying QGP properties, the development of a unified picture of particle production and QCD dynamics from small (pp) to large (nucleus--nucleus) systems, the exploration of parton densities in nuclei in a broad ($x$, $Q^2$) kinematic range and the search for the possible onset of parton saturation. In order to address these scientific goals, high-luminosity Pb-Pb and p-Pb programmes are considered as priorities for Runs 3 and 4, complemented by high-multiplicity studies in pp collisions and a short run with oxygen ions. High-luminosity runs with intermediate-mass nuclei, for example Ar or Kr, are considered as an appealing case for extending the heavy-ion programme at the LHC beyond Run 4. We investigate the spectral function of Bloch states in an one-dimensional tight-binding non-interacting chain with two different models of static correlated disorder, at zero temperature. We report numerical calculations of the single-particle spectral function based on the Kernel Polynomial Method, which has an $\mathcal{O}(N)$ computational complexity. These results are then confirmed by analytical calculations, where precise conditions were obtained for the appearance of a classical limit in a single-band lattice system. Spatial correlations in the disordered potential give rise to non-perturbative spectral functions shaped as the probability distribution of the random on-site energies, even at low disorder strengths. In the case of disordered potentials with an algebraic power-spectrum, $\propto\left|k\right|^{-\alpha}$, we show that the spectral function is not self-averaging for $\alpha\geq1$., Comment: 27 Pages with 10 Figures
