The COVD-19 pandemic has changed the mobility patterns of city dwellers worldwide. These changes apply to the number of trips made, their durations and directions as well as transport modes chosen for travelling purposes. In general, although the number of trips decreased, the use of cars increased and that of public transport declined. These mobility changes were induced by the fear of travelling in crowded vehicles and the extent of restrictions introduced by the governments. The effects of such changes are hard to assess and their evaluation is a complex issue. Based on data available about the transportation system in Warsaw and analysis of Big Data (comprising SIM card movements, acquired from mobile phone network operators), a research project has been carried out under the “IDUB against COVID-19” programme. Transportation models had been built which enabled estimation of the number of trips made at each stage of the pandemic in the spring 2020 and identification of differences through comparison with the models developed for the pre-pandemic conditions (year 2019). The calculations enabled assessment of the social costs of the pandemic associated with the urban transportation system, brought about mostly by changes in using private and public transport modes. The cost efficiency of public transport decreased as a result of limits on the number of passengers per vehicle introduced by transport authorities.

Abstract This study introduces a comprehensive approach for classifying individual malting barley kernels, involving dual-sided kernel imaging, a specifically designed image processing algorithm, an optimized deep neural network architecture, and a mechanical sorting system. The proposed method achieves precise classification into multiple classes, aligning with quality standards for malting material assessment. Throughout the study, various image analysis techniques were assessed, including traditional feature engineering, established transfer learning deep neural network architectures, and our custom-designed convolutional neural network tailored for barley kernel image analysis. Comparative analysis underscores the superior performance of our network model. The study reveals that our proposed deep learning network achieves a 94% accuracy in classifying barley kernel defects and varieties, outperforming well-established transfer learning models to complex architectures that attain 93% accuracy. Additionally, it surpasses the traditional machine learning approach involving feature extraction and support vector machine classifiers, which achieve accuracy below 90% in detecting defective kernels and below 70% in varietal classification. However, we also noted the traditional approach’s advantage in morphological feature recognition. This observation guides new research toward integrating morphological feature extraction techniques with modern convolutional networks. This paper presents a deep neural network designed specifically for the analysis of cereal kernel images in two applications: defect and variety classification. It emphasizes the importance of standardizing kernel orientation and merging images from both sides of the kernel, and introduces a device for image acquisition that fulfills this need.

Abstract A pattern of increasing species richness from the poles to the equator is frequently observed in many animal taxa. Ecological limits, determined by the abiotic conditions and biotic interactions within an environment, are one of the major factors influencing the geographical distribution of species diversity. Energy availability is often considered a crucial limiting factor, with temperature and productivity serving as empirical measures. However, these measures may not fully explain the observed species richness, particularly in marine ecosystems. Here, through a global comparative approach and standardised methodologies, such as Autonomous Reef Monitoring Structures (ARMS) and DNA metabarcoding, we show that the seasonality of primary production explains sessile animal richness comparatively or better than surface temperature or primary productivity alone. A Hierarchical Generalised Additive Model (HGAM) is validated, after a model selection procedure, and the prediction error is compared, following a cross-validation approach, with HGAMs including environmental variables commonly used to explain animal richness. Moreover, the linear effect of production magnitude on species richness becomes apparent only when considered jointly with seasonality, and, by identifying world coastal areas characterized by extreme values of both, we postulate that this effect may result in a positive relationship in environments with lower seasonality.

Abstract Background Microspore embryogenesis is a process that produces doubled haploids in tissue culture environments and is widely used in cereal plants. The efficient production of green regenerants requires stresses that could be sensed at the level of glycolysis, followed by the Krebs cycle and electron transfer chain. The latter can be affected by Cu(II) ion concentration in the induction media acting as cofactors of biochemical reactions, indirectly influencing the production of glutathione (GSH) and S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) and thereby affecting epigenetic mechanisms involving DNA methylation (demethylation—DM, de novo methylation—DNM). The conclusions mentioned were acquired from research on triticale regenerants, but there is no similar research on barley. In this way, the study looks at how DNM, DM, Cu(II), SAM, GSH, and β-glucan affect the ability of green plant regeneration efficiency (GPRE). Results The experiment involved spring barley regenerants obtained through anther culture. Nine variants (trials) of induction media were created by adding copper (CuSO4: 0.1; 5; 10 µM) and silver salts (AgNO3: 0; 10; 60 µM), with varying incubation times for the anthers (21, 28, and 35 days). Changes in DNA methylation were estimated using the DArTseqMet molecular marker method, which also detects cytosine methylation. Phenotype variability in β-glucans, SAM and GSH induced by the nutrient treatments was assessed using tentative assignments based on the Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. The effectiveness of green plant regeneration ranged from 0.1 to 2.91 plants per 100 plated anthers. The level of demethylation ranged from 7.61 to 32.29, while de novo methylation reached values ranging from 6.83 to 32.27. The paper demonstrates that the samples from specific in vitro conditions (trials) formed tight groups linked to the factors contributing to the two main components responsible for 55.05% of the variance (to the first component DNM, DM, to the second component GSH, β-glucans, Cu(II), GPRE). Conclusions We can conclude that in vitro tissue culture conditions affect biochemical levels, DNA methylation changes, and GPRE. Increasing Cu(II) concentration in the IM impacts the metabolism and DNA methylation, elevating GPRE. Thus, changing Cu(II) concentration in the IM is fair to expect to boost GPRE.

The majority of mitochondrial proteins are encoded in the nucleus, translated on cytosolic ribosomes, and subsequently targeted to the mitochondrial surface. Their further import into the organelle is facilitated by highly specialized protein translocases. Mitochondrial precursor proteins that are destined to the mitochondrial matrix and, to some extent, the inner membrane, utilize translocase of the inner membrane (TIM23). This indispensable import machinery has been extensively studied in yeast. The translocating unit of the TIM23 complex in yeast consists of two membrane proteins, Tim17 and Tim23. In contrast to previous findings, recent reports demonstrate the primary role of Tim17, rather than Tim23, in the translocation of newly synthesized proteins. Very little is known about human TIM23 translocase. Human cells have two orthologs of yeast Tim17, TIMM17A and TIMM17B. Here, using computational tools, we present the architecture of human core TIM23 variants with either TIMM17A or TIMM17B, forming two populations of highly similar complexes. The structures reveal high conservation of the core TIM23 complex between human and yeast. Interestingly, both TIMM17A and TIMM17B variants interact with TIMM23 and reactive oxygen species modulator 1 (ROMO1); a homolog of yeast Mgr2, a protein that can create a channel‐like structure with Tim17. The high structural conservation of proteins that form the core TIM23 complex in yeast and humans raises an interesting question about mechanistic and functional differences that justify existence of the two variants of TIM23 in higher eukaryotes.

Abstract Background Despite primary care being largely free at the point of delivery, many Canadians experience challenges in accessing the services they need. A systematic review was conducted to summarize the evidence on the level of unmet need for primary care in Canada and its social determinants. Methods MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of Science databases were screened from inception to December 2023 using relevant search terms for primary care and unmet healthcare needs. Quantitative observational studies in the English language that included Canadian adults aged 18 years and older and focused on unmet needs for primary care were included. The risk of bias in the studies was assessed using either the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal checklist or the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale. The included studies were synthesized narratively. Results Forty-six studies met the inclusion criteria for this review. Of the included studies, 96% were cross-sectional in design and 91% had low risk of bias. The prevalence of unmet need, mostly self-reported, varied between 6.6% and 25.2% in national studies. Social determinants of unmet needs were heterogeneous across studies. Findings suggest that unmet need for primary care is related to having low income, mental health diagnoses, and chronic conditions, and negatively associated with older age, having better-perceived health, and having a family physician. Conclusions Universal access to primary care is the founding principle of the Canadian healthcare system. However, we found evidence suggesting that the extent to which primary care needs are met is influenced by social determinants of health. Further research is needed to improve our understanding of the mechanisms of unmet primary care needs in Canada. Systematic review registration PROSPERO CRD42021285074.

Abstract There are available studies assessing the development of maxillary sinuses in relation to the viscerocranium. However, there are no publications analyzing the development of maxillary sinuses in relation to the development of the cranium, i.e. both the viscerocranium and the neurocranium. The aim of the study was to analyze the correlation between the dimensions of maxillary sinuses and anthropometric measurements of the cranium in children. The study was retrospective and was conducted at the based on the results of head computed tomography investigation. The study group included 180 girls and 180 boys, aged from birth to 18 years. To assess the correlation between the degree of development of the paranasal sinuses and the growth of the cranium, standard anthropometric points on the skull and strictly defined dimensions of the height, length, width, and volume of right and left maxillary sinuses were used. Abstract Background The study evaluated the prognostic impact of the immune microenvironment in LSCC with markers of major immune cells to identify the key determinants of short-term disease-free survival (ST DFS) and reveal factors related to disease progression. Methods The study cohort included 61 patients who underwent total laryngectomy, 83.6% of whom were male with a mean age of 64.3 years at the time of surgery. Twenty-five patients had long term DFS (over 5 years), 8 – had moderate DFS (between 2 and 5 years), and 28 had short-term DFS (less than 2 years). Immunohistochemical staining and evaluation were performed on samples collected after the laryngectomy. Results The samples’ assessment revealed that the mean expression of all analysed markers was the highest both in stroma and the tumor compartment for short term DFS (ST DFS) patients. Analysis confirmed that a high stromal density of CD8 cells (p = 0.038) significantly correlated with DFS, and that the increased presence of CD57 cells (p = 0.021) was significantly associated with ST DFS. Moreover, the high density of CD68 cells in the tumor epithelial compartment had a negative prognostic impact on DFS (p = 0.032). Analysis of overall survival in the studied cohort with Kaplan-Meyer curves revealed that a high stromal density of CD68 cells was a significant negative predictor of OS (p = 0.008). Conclusions The observed associations of CD68 cells infiltration with progression and prognosis in patients with LSCC provide potential screening and therapeutic opportunities for patients with unfavourable outcomes.

We conducted univariate and multivariate genome-wide association analyses (GWAS) to explore the genetic architecture of basal ganglia volumes using brain scans obtained from 34,794 Europeans with replication in 4,808 white and generalization in 5,220 non-white Europeans. Offsite construction technologies are developed to reduce project cost and duration. To make the most of the potential offered by prefabrication the planner should consider the whole supply chain. A failure to coordinate the off-site production with on-site erection is a source of waste (waiting time of the construction crews or redundant handling activities on-site). Most of the research to date focused on optimizing operations of a prefabrication plant assuming a deterministic schedule of demand for its products. The purpose of this paper is to develop a mathematical model for integrated scheduling of offsite and on-site operations. Its solution is a schedule that minimizes the downtime of both the prefabrication plant and the on-site erection crews. In accordance with the Just-in-Time concept, the prefabrication schedule is set in a way to reduce the stocks of finished products, thus reducing the storage area and cost of funds tied up in inventory. The schedule’s robustness against the disturbance in the production and erection workflows is assumed to be assured allocating time buffers. The advantage of the proposed method is the ease of collecting the input: instead of detailed cost records, estimates of unit cost of lost time can be used.

Background and objective: Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and overactive bladder (OAB) intimately affect the psychological wellbeing and mental health of men. However, to date, the association of aggression with LUTS and OAB has not been investigated. To address this knowledge gap, we evaluated the association of aggression with LUTS and OAB in a large representative cohort of men at the population level. Methods: We used computer-assisted web interviews that included reliable questionnaires for assessment of LUTS, OAB, and aggression. A population-representative group of men was based on the most recent census. For data analysis, we developed univariate and multivariate regression models. Key findings and limitations: We analyzed data for a cohort of 3001 men that was representative for age and place of residence. Abstract Aims Inflammation has emerged as a potential key pathophysiological mechanism in heart failure (HF) in general and acute HF (AHF) specifically, with inflammatory biomarkers shown to be highly predictive of adverse outcomes in these patients. The CORTAHF study builds on both these data and the fact that steroid burst therapy has been shown to be effective in the treatment of respiratory diseases and COVID‐19. Our hypothesis is that in patients with AHF and elevated C‐reactive protein (CRP) levels without symptoms or signs of infection, a 7‐day course of steroid therapy will lead to reduced inflammation and short‐term improvement in quality of life and a reduced risk of worsening HF (WHF) events. Methods and results The study, which is currently ongoing, will include 100 patients with AHF ages 18–85, regardless of ejection fraction, screened within 12 h of presentation. Patients will be included who have NT‐proBNP > 1500 pg/mL and CRP > 20 mg/L at screening. Exclusion criteria include haemodynamic instability and symptoms and signs of infection. After signed consent, eligible patients will be randomized according to a central randomization scheme stratified by centre 1:1 to either treatment once daily for 7 days with 40 mg prednisone orally or to standard care. Patients will be assessed at study day 2, day 4 or at discharge if earlier, and at days 7 and 31 at the hospital; and at day 91 through a telephone follow‐up. The primary endpoint is the change in CRP level from baseline to day 7, estimated from a mixed model for repeated measures (MMRM) including all measured timepoints, in patients without a major protocol violation. Secondary endpoints include the time to the first event of WHF adverse event, readmission for HF, or death through day 91; and changes to day 7 in EQ‐5D visual analogue scale score and utility index. Additional clinical and laboratory measures will be assessed. Conclusions The results of the study will add to the knowledge of the role of inflammation in AHF and potentially inform the design of larger studies with possibly longer duration of anti‐inflammatory therapies in AHF.

Abstract Aims We aim to identify the most accurate marker for early prediction of poor diuretic response in acute heart failure (AHF) patients with signs of congestion requiring intravenous diuretic treatment. Methods In this single‐centre, prospective observational study, AHF patients with signs of congestion received a standardized intravenous furosemide dose (1 mg/kg of body weight; 40 mg in bolus and remaining dose in 2 h continuous infusion). Subsequently, we assessed spot urine composition at 2 h post‐administration, comparing it with total urine output at 6 h. Various potential urine markers were analysed for predicting urine output using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and logistic regression models. We investigated guideline‐recommended markers, including spot urine sodium (UNa+) and its cut‐off, and introduced the UNa+/UCr (urine creatinine concentration) ratio adjusting UNa+ for urine dilution. Results Out of 111 patients (85% males, 66.4 ± 13.9 years old, NTproBNP 7290 [4493–14 582] pg/ml), there were 18 (16%) with a poor diuretic response (cumulative urine output

The purpose of the work is to present issues related to the influence of surface treatment on the strength of adhesive joints of C45 steel sheets by grinding based on experimental research. These issues were related to determining the impact of the gradation and type of abrasive material on the strength of adhesive joints of the steel sheets. The grinding was carried out manually using an angle grinder with a disc diameter of 125 mm and a rotational speed of 11,060 min-1, using abrasive materials with grains made of: ceramics, zirconium and electro-corundum with a gradation of P40, and sandpaper with grains made of electro-corundum with various grain sizes with three gradations P40, P220, P400 (according to European FEPA standards). To make the adhesive joints of steel sheets, the epoxy adhesive was used, which contains an epoxy resin based on bisphenol A and a triethyleneteramine curing agent. A profilographometer from Hommel - Etamic was used to determine selected 2D and 3D surface roughness parameters, and the strength tests of the steel sheets adhesive joints were performed on a ZWICK/ROELL Z150 testing machine. The analysis of the tests showed a significant impact of the surface treatment method on the attained shear strength of the steel sheets adhesive joints. Comparing the samples prepared with electrocorundum of the variable gradation, the tests exhibited that the samples prepared with P40 paper had the highest roughness, while samples prepared with P400 paper had the highest shear strength. Roughness analysis indicated that in the comparison group of samples prepared with abrasives of the various abrasive materials, ceramics showed the highest roughness parameters and the shear strength of the adhesive joints after this treatment.

The paper determines the effect of daily precipitation, occurring in the sewerage catchment area located in the Jastków Commune, on the volume of wastewater, flowing into the treatment plant in Snopków. Daily and annual volumes of incidental water, caused by precipitation, flowing into the selected sewerage system were determined, and then the annual costs incurred for their treatment were calculated. The sewerage system selected for the study is located in the eastern part of Poland, in the Lublin Voivodeship, within the Jastków Commune. The design average daily inflow of wastewater to the classical treatment plant with activated sludge is 1200 m3·d-1. To the sewage network made of PVC with a length of 67.22 km domestic wastewater from 1119 single-family buildings from 3350 residents are discharged. The study was carried out in 2019–2022, and the daily precipitation totals and daily sewage inflows to the treatment plant were analyzed. The results of the calculations were related to the humidity classification of the year (dry, average and wet) under temperate climate conditions. The study showed that during precipitation events, the share of incidental water in the average daily volume of wastewater flowing into the treatment plant ranged from 3 to 26%. Annually, 7,400 to 10,325 m3 of rainwater flowed into the studied treatment plant, which accounted for 5.0 to 6.3% of the annual volume of wastewater. The incidental waters flowing into the sewage system resulted in the need to spend additional sums – from PLN 47,814 (€10,897) to PLN 71,232 (€16,234) per year. Thus, the annual cost of wastewater treatment in the studied system increased by about 5–6%. The results of the study are important and valuable information for the operators of the analyzed sewerage network and the wastewater treatment plant, as well as for other units that use similar systems. They will allow to initiate actions to detect and eliminate illegal connections of roof gutters and/or yard drains to sanitary sewers in the analyzed area, which would then allow to reduce the cost of wastewater treatment in the studied case.

The objective of this study was to verify the response of 10 European asparagus cultivars grown for green spear production using post-harvest drip irrigation. Irrigation, used to compensate for periodic deficiencies in precipitation, allows for high and good quality crops for many species, and also keeps soil in good condition. The field experiment was carried out in 2006–2008 on a very light sandy soil in central Poland. Irrigation treatments were applied using the tensiometer indications. Water needs of asparagus were calculated on the base of reference evapotranspiration and crop coefficients. The following evaluations were made: height, diameter and number of summer stalks, as well marketable yield, weight and number of green spears. Drip irrigation applied for two years in the post-harvest period, had a positive effect on all studied traits, both summer stalks and green spears in 2007–2008. A significant increase in the height, number and diameter of summer stalks, as well as an increase in the marketable yield, weight and number of green spears was observed for most of the cultivars. Both factors, the irrigation used and the asparagus cultivars significantly modified the antioxidant content in asparagus spears. The Rapsody cultivar accumulated significantly more, and the Grolim cultivar significantly less, total polyphenols in asparagus spears at unirrigated plots. An inverse relationship was obtained in the Grolim cultivar with respect to the content of vitamin C, which accumulated the most of it under the irrigation conditions. The Ramada cultivar from irrigated plots contained significantly the highest amount of total carotenoids. In turn, the Cipres and Grolim cultivars from irrigated plots were characterized by the highest antioxidant activity.

Advanced metal implants are used in modern medical practice and significantly improve clinical prognosis and quality of life; however, the potential health risks caused by the release of heavy metal ions make further research in this area relevant. The aim of this study is to analyze current scientific sources on the impact of heavy metals released from metal biomedical implants on patients’ health, focusing on the clinical manifestations of these complications, the structure and characteristics of different metal implants, and the possibilities of modifying them. The following scientific methods were used in the study: analysis and synthesis, the method of analogy, induction, abstraction, and the bibliographic method. The study revealed significant health risks of heavy metal ions, such as allergic reactions, toxic complications, carcinogenesis, and systemic effects, including neurological and cardiovascular problems. Innovative modification methods, including surface treatments, nanotechnology, and the development of bio-soluble materials, showed potential to reduce these risks. However, the long-term effects of these modifications remain poorly understood and require further investigation. Heavy metal ions from biomedical implants pose significant health risks. Effective management and reduction of these risks require continuous monitoring, development of new materials, and advanced modification techniques. Further research is essential to understand the long-term effects of metal implants and to develop strategies to ensure patient safety and improve implant efficacy.

Abstract Background Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is an infectious disease caused by the gram-positive, anaerobic bacterium C. difficile. The vulnerable populations for CDI include the elderly, immunocompromised individuals, and hospitalized patients, especially those undergoing antimicrobial therapy, which is a significant risk factor for this infection. Due to its complications and increased resistance to treatment, CDI often leads to longer hospital stays. This study aimed to determine the average length of hospital stay (LOS) of Polish patients with CDI and to identify factors affecting the LOS of infected patients. Methods The study analyzed medical records of adult patients treated with CDI in one of the biggest clinical hospitals in Poland between 2016–2018. Information encompassed the patient's age, LOS results of selected laboratory tests, number of antibiotics used, nutritional status based on Nutritional Risk Screening (NRS 2002), year of hospitalization, presence of diarrhea on admission, systemic infections, additional conditions, and undergone therapies. The systematic collection of these variables forms the foundation for a comprehensive analysis of factors influencing the length of stay. Results In the study period, 319 patients with CDI were hospitalized, with a median LOS of 24 days (min–max = 2–344 days). The average LOS was 4.74 days in 2016 (median = 28 days), 4.27 days in 2017 (median = 24 days), and 4.25 days in 2018 (median = 23 days). There was a weak negative correlation (Rho = -0.235, p 0.05). However, the multivariate regression model explained a substantial portion of the variance in hospitalization length, with an R-squared value of 0.844. Conclusions Hospitalization of a patient with CDI is long. Low albumin levels and increased risk of malnutrition were observed in longer hospitalized patients. Longer hospitalized patients had pneumonia, stroke, or surgery, and were admitted for a reason other than CDI.

Abstract The aim of presented study was to test nutritional properties of potato tubers and silver ions accumulation pattern after foliar application of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) during potato vegetation. Potato plants were sprayed with different concentration of Ag nanoparticles (0.1, 1.0 and 10 mg·dm−3) synthesized with incorporation with sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and sodium citrate as stabilizing agent. The lowest amounts of silver ions were transported to the tubers after spraying with AgNPs synthesized with SDS, rather than with citrate. Nevertheless silver ions accumulation in tubers was negligible. SDS method of synthesis was more favourable in terms of nutritional properties of potato tubers. The highest tested concentration of AgNPs_SDS had a favourable effect on a variety of macro- and micronutrients, ascorbic acid and soluble sugars. In turn, lower concentrations of AgNPs_SDS increased the content of phenolic compounds and free radical scavenging efficiency of tubers. These correlations were also confirmed by Principal Component Analysis.

Abstract The primary plant cell wall (PCW) is a specialized structure composed predominantly of cellulose, hemicelluloses and pectin. While the role of cellulose and hemicelluloses in the formation of the PCW scaffold is undeniable, the mechanisms of how hemicelluloses determine the mechanical properties of PCW remain debatable. Thus, we produced bacterial cellulose–hemicellulose hydrogels as PCW analogues, incorporated with hemicelluloses. Next, we treated samples with hemicellulose degrading enzymes, and explored its structural and mechanical properties. As suggested, difference of hemicelluloses in structure and chemical composition resulted in a variety of the properties studied. By analyzing all the direct and indirect evidences we have found that glucomannan, xyloglucan and arabinoxylan increased the width of cellulose fibers both by hemicellulose surface deposition and fiber entrapment. Arabinoxylan increased stresses and moduli of the hydrogel by its reinforcing effect, while for xylan, increase in mechanical properties was determined by establishment of stiff cellulose–cellulose junctions. In contrast, increasing content of xyloglucan decreased stresses and moduli of hydrogel by its weak interactions with cellulose, while glucomannan altered cellulose network formation via surface deposition, decreasing its strength. The current results provide evidence for structure–dependent mechanisms of cellulose–hemicellulose interactions, suggesting the specific structural role of the latter.

Abstract Unruptured giant intracranial aneurysms (GIA) are those with diameters of 25 mm or greater. As aneurysm size is correlated with rupture risk, GIA natural history is poor. Parent artery occlusion or trapping plus bypass revascularization should be considered to encourage intra-aneurysmal thrombosis when other treatment options are contraindicated. The mechanistic background of these methods is poorly studied. Thus, we assessed the potential of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and fluid–structure interaction (FSI) analyses for clinical use in the preoperative stage. A CFD investigation in three patient-specific flexible models of whole arterial brain circulation was performed. A C6 ICA segment GIA model was created based on CT angiography. Two models were then constructed that simulated a virtual bypass in combination with proximal GIA occlusion, but with differing middle cerebral artery (MCA) recipient vessels for the anastomosis. FSI and CFD investigations were performed in three models to assess changes in flow pattern and haemodynamic parameters alternations (wall shear stress (WSS), oscillatory shear index (OSI), maximal time averaged WSS (TAWSS), and pressure). General flow splitting across the entire domain was affected by virtual bypass procedures, and any deficiency was partially compensated by a specific configuration of the circle of Willis. Following the implementation of bypass procedures, a reduction in haemodynamic parameters was observed within the aneurysm in both cases under analysis. In the case of the temporal MCA branch bypass, the decreases in the studied parameters were slightly greater than in the frontal MCA branch bypass. The reduction in the magnitude of the chosen area-averaged parameters (averaged over the aneurysm wall surface) was as follows: WSS 35.7%, OSI 19.0%, TAWSS 94.7%, and pressure 24.2%. FSI CFD investigation based on patient-specific anatomy models with subsequent stimulation of virtual proximal aneurysm occlusion in conjunction with bypass showed that this method creates a pro-thrombotic favourable environment whilst reducing intra-aneurysmal pressure leading to shrinking. MCA branch recipient selection for optimum haemodynamic conditions should be evaluated individually in the preoperative stage.

Abstract Background Zinc nanoparticles (NPs) are characterized by high bioavailability, small size, and high absorbability. The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effect of Zn-NP feed supplementation on ruminal fermentation, microbiota, and histopathology in lambs. In vitro (24 h), short-term (STE, 28 d), and long-term (LTE, 70 d) experiments were performed. The lambs in STE were fed a basal diet (BD) composed of 350 g/d ground barley and 700 g/d meadow hay (Control), BD enriched with ZnO-NPs (80 mg Zn/kg of diet, ZnO-NPs), and BD enriched with Zn phosphate-based NPs (80 mg Zn/kg of diet, ZnP-NP). The in vitro gas production technique was used in incubated rumen fluid from STE. The lambs in LTE were fed BD (Control), BD enriched with ZnO-NPs (40 mg Zn/kg of diet, ZnO-NP40), BD enriched with ZnO-NPs (80 mg Zn/kg of diet, ZnO-NP80) and BD enriched with ZnO (80 mg Zn/kg of diet, ZnO-80). Abstract Objective To investigate whether Molybdenum blood level is a marker of cancer risk on BRCA1 carriers. Methods A prospective cohort study was conducted among 989 initially unaffected women with a BRCA1 mutation. Blood samples were collected to measure molybdenum levels, and participants were followed for an average of 7.5 years. Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess the association between blood molybdenum levels and cancer incidence, adjusting for potential confounders. Results High blood molybdenum levels (> 0.70 µg/L) were significantly associated with an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer (HR = 5.55; 95%CI: 1.59–19.4; p = 0.007) and any cancer (HR = 1.74; 95%CI: 1.17–2.61; p = 0.007) but not breast cancer (HR = 1.46, CI = 0.91–2.33; p = 0.12). The cumulative incidence of ovarian cancer at ten years was 1.2% for the lowest molybdenum tertile, 4.2% for the middle tertile, and 8.7% for the highest tertile. Conclusion Elevated blood molybdenum levels are associated with an increased risk of ovarian cancer on BRCA1 mutation carriers. Lowering molybdenum levels may potentially reduce cancer risk in this population, and high molybdenum levels could serve as a marker for considering preventive oophorectomy in BRCA1 carriers. Further research is warranted to confirm these findings and explore interventions targeting molybdenum levels as a preventive measure for ovarian cancer in BRCA1 mutation carriers.

Abstract Background The article describes attitudes towards vaccinations in Poland in relation to issues such as voluntary versus compulsory vaccinations, the method of financing vaccinations, the method of organizing and carrying out vaccinations, the cognitive and educational aspect of vaccines (how to obtain knowledge about vaccines) and the preferred model of work and research on new vaccines. Taking into account these issues, the authors have created four ideal models of preferred vaccination policies: (a) the market model; (b) the state model; (c) the vaccine hesitancy model; and (d) the civic–social model. This perspective makes it possible to better understand and learn about the various motives behind the attitudes of anti-vaccination movements, as well as to notice cracks and divisions among vaccination supporters and their attitudes towards the financing and organization of vaccinations. Methods The study was carried out using the CATI method on a representative random-quota sample of Polish society of 1000 people aged 18 and over. The study took age, sex, education and the size of the place of residence into account. Additionally, in the Socio-demographic factors influencing attitudes towards vaccination practices in Poland section, we used the chi-squared test and regression analysis of factors influencing vaccination practices in Poland. PASW Statistics 18 (a version of SPSS) software was used for statistical analysis. Significant correlations were demonstrated at a significance level of 0.05% Pearson. Results This article has shown that attitudes towards vaccinations are embedded in broader divisions and orientations related to the vision of the social order: the role of the state, the organization of healthcare and payments for vaccinations and medical services, as well as preferred ways of knowledge production in society and work on new vaccines. The political sympathies and the age of the respondents were the most important variables influencing vaccination behaviour. The education of the respondents was less important. Conclusions A few years after the peak of the pandemic, the scope of anti-vaccination attitudes in Polish society ranges from 20% of the population (dogmatic anti-vaxxers) to 30% (vaccine hesitancy occurring depending on attitudes towards vaccinations).

The aim of the study was to identify and assess the transformations and regional differentiation of the area structure of farms in Poland. The primary source of data was information collected from the Central Statistical Office (CSO) on the basis of the results of the 2002, 2010 and 2020 Agricultural Censuses and the CSO’s Local Data Bank. The research was carried out on a voivodeship basis. In the study, econometric models were constructed and subjected to detailed verification, the dependent variable being the average area of the farm in hectares of agricultural land. The dependent variable was compared with 16 independent variables, which were selected because of their information potential and discriminatory ability. To explain the reasons for this variation, it was decided to use a model for panel data with constant effects. Lagrange and Hausman tests were used to verify them. The analysis showed that in the period studied, the most important factor adversely affecting the level of the area structure of farms in Poland was the labor resources in agriculture. The factors that accelerated the changes in the area structure also included the rate of succession and the level of education of farm managers.

Abstract Background Cotton is one of the topmost fiber crops throughout the globe. During the last decade, abrupt changes in the climate resulted in drought, heat, and salinity. These stresses have seriously affected cotton production and significant losses all over the textile industry. The GhAGC kinase, a subfamily of AGC group and member of serine/threonine (Ser/Thr) protein kinases group and is highly conserved among eukaryotic organisms. The AGC kinases are compulsory elements of cell development, metabolic processes, and cell death in mammalian systems. The investigation of RNA editing sites within the organelle genomes of multicellular vascular plants, such as Gossypium hirsutum holds significant importance in understanding the regulation of gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. Methods In present work, we characterized twenty-eight GhAGC genes in cotton and constructed phylogenetic tree using nine different species from the most primitive to the most recent. Results In sequence logos analyses, highly conserved amino acid residues were found in G. hirsutum, G. arboretum, G. raimondii and A. thaliana. The occurrence of cis-acting growth and stress-related elements in the promoter regions of GhAGCs highlight the significance of these factors in plant development and abiotic stress tolerance. Ka/Ks levels demonstrated that purifying selection pressure resulting from segmental events was applied to GhAGC with little functional divergence. We focused on identifying RNA editing sites in G. hirsutum organelles, specifically in the chloroplast and mitochondria, across all 28 AGC genes. Conclusion The positive role of GhAGCs was explored by quantifying the expression in the plant tissues under abiotic stress. These findings help in understanding the role of GhAGC genes under abiotic stresses which may further be used in cotton breeding for the development of climate smart varieties in abruptly changing climate.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection of the central nervous system caused by viruses belonging to the family Flaviviridae. The disease manifests with a range of symptoms, including fever, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and neurological complications, such as meningoencephalitis and paralysis. These symptoms can have severe and long-lasting consequences for human health, potentially leading to permanent neurological damage or even death. Recent epidemiological trends reveal a marked and alarming increase in TBE cases across Poland and the Baltic states, signaling an emerging public health threat in these regions. This article aims to highlight the growing prevalence of TBE in Poland, examining environmental and socio-economic factors contributing to the virus’s spread. Additionally, it outlines proposed strategies for the implementation of an effective control and prevention plan that includes public awareness campaigns, vaccination programs, and tick control measures. By presenting comprehensive data on TBE transmission, incidence rates, and the socio-economic burden of the disease, this article underscores the critical importance of preventing the spread of TBE and safeguarding public health.

Experimental tests and numerical analyses were carried out on short, thin-walled channel columns with modified cross-sectional shape. The columns were loaded with an axial compressive force applied at the center of gravity of the cross section. Tests were carried out on a universal testing machine, while numerical analyses were performed in ANSYS software. The purpose of the tests was to determine the values of critical forces for the compressed columns and to determine the values of maximum forces at which failure of the columns occurs. Critical forces were determined based on the strain-averaged method. Based on the study, it was found that the strength and resistance to loss of stability of columns is primarily affected by their stiffness, and therefore by the shape of the cross-sections. In addition, for short columns, it seems more important to determine the value of maximum forces than the values of critical forces.

This article presents the results of comparative tests of gear wheels based on the contactless and contact measurement methods. Measurements of gear wheels in accuracy classes containing deviations within the range of measurement capabilities of the GOM ATOS II optical scanner are proposed. Elementary deviations of teeth related to the involute profile were analyzed. In undertaking a non-contact gear measurement using the GOM ATOS II scanner, a new method was developed to extract parameters from the point cloud, which were then used to determine the total deviation of the profile. The results of the measurements obtained using the non-contact method were compared with the results obtained with the contact method using the Wenzel WGT 600 four-axis machine specialized for measuring gear wheels. Measurement uncertainty was also compared. The result of the conducted tests is the comparability of results for gear wheels made in accuracy class 10 according to DIN 3961/62. The proposed non-contact method shows the possibility of using it to measure gear wheels commonly used in agricultural and construction machines. The information obtained from comparing the measurement model and the nominal wheel model provides additional information about surface defects of the part which result from the production and operation process.

Background: A chronic disease occurring in a person’s life is a stressor, disrupting every aspect of their life. Objectives: This study aims to assess the relationship between functioning in chronic illness and quality of life with the prevalence of symptoms of depression and anxiety in patients with high cardiovascular risk. Material and methods: This study included 200 patients (aged 18–80 years) under the care of a primary care physician, diagnosed with hypertension and/or hypercholesterolemia, and/or diabetes between 6 and 24 months before the enrollment. The presented analysis assessed the symptoms of anxiety and depression using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS); and the quality of life of patients with cardiovascular disease using the Heart Quality of Life (HeartQoL) questionnaire and functioning in chronic illness using the Functioning in Chronic Illness Scale (FCIS). Results: The HADS scores amounted to 4.34 ± 3.414 points for the HADS-Anxiety subscale and 3.20 ± 2.979 points for the HADS-Depression subscale. The score indicative of functioning in chronic illness assessed with the FCIS was 98.32 ± 13.89 points. The independent predictors of HADS-anxiety were HeartQoL Emotional and FCIS Global, while HeartQoL Global and FCIS Global were the independent predictors for HADS-depression. Better functioning in chronic illness (FCIS Global) was associated with less frequent symptoms of anxiety and depression based on the HADS: HADS-Anxiety (R Spearmann = −0.3969; p < 0.0001) and HADS-Depression (R Spearmann = −0.5884; p < 0.0001). Higher HeartQoL scores, both globally, as well as in emotional and physical dimensions, were associated with a lower severity of anxiety and depression assessed with the HADS: HADS-Anxiety (R Spearmann = −0.2909; p = 0.0001) and HADS-Depression (R Spearmann = −0.2583; p = 0.0002). Conclusions: The quality of life and functioning in chronic illness are connected with symptoms of depression and anxiety. When assessing the severity of the depression symptoms in relation to the individual aspects of functioning in chronic illness, the areas requiring supportive-educational intervention can be identified. The assessment of both functioning in a chronic disease and the severity of the depression symptoms should be included in a standard nursing diagnosis and further supportive and educational intervention.

Abstract The main challenges when managing a fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles are to ensure the relative stability of its formation and to minimise disorganisation, specifically when undergoing an intrusion. When planning the mission it is beneficial for the operator to set the parameters of the formation to balance the needs of the mission with the disorganisation that an intruder may cause. The model developed in this research predicts the anticipated disturbance as a function of the parameters of the formation. The effectiveness of six machine learning methods are compared with a previously established baseline, using data obtained from simulations. CatBoost (categorical boosting) delivered the best results, with an $$R^2$$ R 2 (coefficient of determination) value of 83.3%, representing an improvement of 80% over the baseline. The SHAP (Shapley Additive Explanations) method was used to extend the model beyond predictability for particular combinations of values of parameters, towards generalised recommendations for the operator of the formation.

Abstract Background Fruit storage methods such as dynamic controlled atmosphere (DCA) technology enable adjusting the level of oxygen in the storage room, according to the physiological state of the product to slow down the ripening process. However, the successful application of DCA requires precise and reliable sensors of the oxidative stress of the fruit. In this study, respiration rate and chlorophyll fluorescence (CF) signals were evaluated after introducing a novel predictors of apples' hypoxic stress based on laser speckle imaging technique (LSI). Results Both chlorophyll fluorescence and LSI signals were equally good for stress detection in principle. However, in an application with automatic detection based on machine learning models, the LSI signal proved to be superior, due to its stability and measurement repeatability. Moreover, the shortcomings of the CF signal appear to be its inability to indicate oxygen stress in tissues with low chlorophyll content but this does not apply to LSI. A comparison of different LSI signal processing methods showed that method based on the dynamics of changes in image content was better indicators of stress than methods based on measurements of changes in pixel brightness (inertia moment or laser speckle contrast analysis). Data obtained using the near-infrared laser provided better prediction capabilities, compared to the laser with red light. Conclusions The study showed that the signal from the scattered laser light phenomenon is a good predictor for the oxidative stress of apples. Results showed that effective prediction using LSI was possible and did not require additional signals. The proposed method has great potential as an alternative indicator of fruit oxidative stress, which can be applied in modern storage systems with a dynamically controlled atmosphere.

Abstract Background While conspiracy theories cover many different themes, medical conspiracy theories (MCTs) have become particularly prevalent in modern societies. As beliefs in MCTs can become a source of “infodemics”, influence individual health behaviors and cause distrust in medical institutions and personnel, healthcare workers must find ways to overturn patients’ conspiracy thinking. However, as the medical world is not free of these beliefs, in this study, we investigated beliefs in MCTs among medical and health science students and their association with reported health behaviors. Methods Our sample was derived from a self-administered, anonymized, computer-assisted web survey conducted among 1,175 medical and health science students enrolled at the Poznan University of Medical Sciences, Poland. Results From a set of twenty different MCTs, one-third of students rejected all of them, 18% believed in one, 15% in two, 10% in three, and 24% supported four or more conspiracy theories. In addition, many students were hesitant or unsure about MCTs. We also found that nursing and midwifery students were the most likely to believe in MCTs, while medical and dental students were the least supportive. Support for MCTs was higher among students in the early years of their studies and who declared themselves religious and conservative. This study also highlights the association between students’ support for MCTs and their reported health behaviors, including avoiding vaccinations, using alternative medicine, taking vitamin C, or using social media as an essential source of health information. Conclusions As medical and health science students are prone to conspiratorial thinking, they should be trained to act as a trusted and reliable source of medical information, to mitigate conspiratorial beliefs, and to act as role models for their patients and society, effectively shaping health behaviors in the population.

Semaphorins (SEMAs), ADAM, and ADAMTS family members are implicated in various cancer progression events within the tumor microenvironment across different cancers. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the expression of SEMA7A, SEMA4D, ADAM8, and ADAMTS10 in colorectal cancer (CRC) in relation to the mutational landscape of KRAS, NRAS, BRAF, PIK3CA, and AKT genes, microsatellite instability (MSI) status, and clinicopathological features. We also examined the associations between the expression of these proteins and selected cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors, assessed using a multiplex assay. Protein concentrations were quantified using ELISA in CRC tumors and tumor-free surgical margin tissue homogenates. Gene mutations were evaluated via RT-PCR, and MSI status was determined using immunohistochemistry (IHC). GSEA and statistical analyses were performed using R Studio. We observed a significantly elevated expression of SEMA7A in BRAF-mutant CRC tumors and an overexpression of ADAM8 in KRAS 12/13-mutant tumors. The expression of ADAMTS10 was decreased in PIK3CA-mutant CRC tumors. No significant differences in the expression of the examined proteins were observed based on MSI status. The SEMA7A and SEMA4D expressions were correlated with the expression of numerous cytokines associated with various immune processes. The potential immunomodulatory functions of these molecules and their suitability as therapeutic targets require further investigation.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is one of the most versatile semiconductor materials with many potential applications. Understanding the interactions between the surface chemistry of ZnO along with its physico-chemical properties are essential for the development of ZnO as a robust photocatalyst for the removal of aqueous pollutants. We report on the fabrication of nanoparticle-like porous ZnO films and the correlation between the fabrication process parameters, particle size, surface oxygen vacancies (SOV), photoluminescence and photocatalytic performance. The synthesis route is unique, as highly porous zinc layers with nanoscale grains were first grown via magnetron sputtering, a vacuum-based technique, and subsequently annealed at temperatures of 400 °C, 600 °C and 800 °C in oxygen flow to oxidise them to zinc oxide (ZnO) while maintaining their porosity. Our results show that as the annealing temperature increases, nanoparticle agglomeration increases, and thus there is a decrease in the active sites for the photocatalytic reaction. However, for selected samples the annealing leads to an increase of the photocatalytic efficiency, which we explain based on the analysis of defects in the material, based on photoluminescence (PL). PL analysis showed that in the material the transition between the conduction band and the oxygen vacancy is responsible for the green emission centered at 525 nm, but the photocatalytic activity correlated best with surface states—related emission.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is a major public health issue, as the second most common cancer and the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men. Many PCa cases are indolent and pose minimal risk, making active surveillance a suitable management approach. However, clinically significant prostate carcinoma (csPCa) can lead to serious health issues, including progression, metastasis, and death. Differentiating between insignificant prostate cancer (inPCa) and csPCa is crucial for determining appropriate treatment. Diagnosis of PCa primarily involves trans-perineal and transrectal systematic biopsies. Systematic transrectal prostate biopsy, which typically collects 10–12 tissue samples, is a standard method, but it can miss csPCa and is associated with some complications. Recent advancements, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-targeted biopsies, have been suggested to improve risk stratification and reduce overtreatment of inPCa and undertreatment of csPCa, thereby enhancing patient quality of life and treatment outcomes. Guided biopsies are increasingly recommended for their ability to better detect high-risk cancers while reducing identification of low-risk cases. MRI-targeted biopsies, especially when used as an initial biopsy in biopsy-naïve patients and those under active surveillance, have become more common. Utilization of MRI-TB alone can decrease septic complications; however, the combining of targeted biopsies with perilesional sampling is recommended for optimal detection of csPCa. Future advancements in imaging and biopsy techniques, including AI-augmented lesion detection and robotic-assisted sampling, promise to further improve the accuracy and effectiveness of PCa detection.

VEXAS syndrome is a new disease entity with symptoms that can mimic hematological, rheumatic and dermatological diseases. It is important to take a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, taking into account genetic testing, in which the presence of mutations in the UBA1 gene can confirm the diagnosis. UBA1 mutation has been shown to be involved in the induction of the inflammatory response through many different mechanisms. NF-κB and TNF-α pathways appear to be the most important in VEXAS syndrome. There are many different UBA1 mutations which can result in different outcomes, suggesting it is a possible prognostic factor. Furthermore, mutations differ in how they impair UBA1 function. Cytokines have been shown to be significantly altered in VEXAS patients; however, their exact expression and importance were not clearly defined. Interleukins, such as interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1, IL-2R and others, were reported to be expressed at an altered level, similarly to other cytokines, such as IFN-γ or TNF-α. It is worth noting that the expression of certain cytokines can vary between patients, which poses therapeutic difficulties in selecting the right drug. Therefore, the aim of this review was to describe the cytokines involved in VEXAS syndrome and associate their expression with UBA1 mutation.

Abstract Laser texturing seems to be a promising technique for reducing bacterial adhesion on titanium implant surfaces. This work aims to demonstrate the possibility of obtaining a functionally orientated surface of titanium implant elements with a specific architecture with specific bacteriological and photocatalytic properties. Femtosecond laser-generated surface structures, such as laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS, wrinkles), grooves, and spikes on titanium, have been characterised by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The photocatalytic activity of the titanium surfaces produced was tested based on the degradation effect of methylene blue (MB). The correlation between the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 coatings and their morphology and structure has been analysed. Features related to the size, shape, and distribution of the roughness patterns were found to influence the adhesion of the bacterial strain on different surfaces. On the laser-structurised surface, the adhesion of Escherichia coli bacteria were reduced by 80% compared to an untreated reference surface.

Abstract Background Mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) is increasingly considered vital for addressing the needs of displaced communities. The mental health of young people in Lebanon, including members of the host community and refugees, has been severely affected by multiple crises. Physical activity (PA) is an effective means for enhancing mental health, but evidence of PA’s impact on mental health among forcibly displaced populations is still emerging and often varies widely across studies. Method In this waitlist-controlled study, we examined the effectiveness of an 8-week psychosocial bouldering group intervention offered by the nonprofit organization ClimbAID on psychological well-being, distress, self-efficacy, and social cohesion in a group of mostly Syrian refugee adolescents residing in the Bekaa Valley, Lebanon. The intervention consisted of 8 sessions and took place once a week for 2 h in a group of up to 12 adolescents with 2 trained facilitators and up to 2 volunteers, supervised by a climbing instructor and a social worker. Multilevel analyses were performed for all outcomes. Results 233 people were included in the study. The dropout rate was approximately 33%. The IG improved significantly more than the waitlist group in terms of overall mental well-being and psychological distress. Group allocation was a significant predictor of improvements in mental well-being and psychological distress and showed a trend toward predicting self-efficacy. There was no positive impact of the intervention on social cohesion. Conclusions Even in complex humanitarian settings of forced displacement, a psychosocial bouldering intervention reduces psychological distress and increases well-being in a mixed group of host and refugee youth in Bekaa, Lebanon. Trial registration Prospectively registered with ISRCTN 13005983, registered April 1st, 2022.

Abstract It has been suggested that having a reputation for being prosocial is a critical part of social status across all human societies. It has also been argued that prosocial behavior confers benefits, whether physiological, such as stress reduction, or social, such as building allies or becoming more popular. Here, we investigate the relationship between helping reputation (being named as someone others would go to for help), and hair-derived chronic stress (hair cortisol concentration). In a sample of 77 women and 62 men, we found that perceived helping reputation was not related to chronic stress. Overall, the results of our study suggest that, in an egalitarian society with fluid camp membership and widely practiced generosity such as the Hadza, helping reputation does not necessarily boost stress-related health benefits through prestige-signaling mechanisms observed in hierarchical, large-scale societies.

Abstract This study examines the influence of different grain size fractions of coal fly ash on the properties of clay-cement mortars used in flood levee construction. Dry aerodynamic separation and mesh sieving were used to obtain ultrafine, fine, and medium fractions of high-calcium and silica fly ash. The experimental results reveal that the rheological properties of fresh mortars are significantly influenced by these fractions. High-calcium fly ash mortars exhibit high reactivity and rapid increase in viscosity, with finer fractions showing the highest reactivity. Silica ashes show increased reactivity in the later stages of suspension hardening. Their spherical shape contributes to reducing internal friction during flow in initial technological operations. Furthermore, the compressive strength of hardened mortars improves as the particle size decreases for both ashes, resulting in a dense and uniform microstructure. The separation and fractionation of fly ashes contribute to the obtaining of fractions that influence the parameters of clay-cement suspension application on different scales. The results show the potential benefits of ash separation, which can bring advantages in terms of economic viability, engineering performance, and ecological sustainability.

Abstract Periodically driven quantum systems exhibit a diverse set of phenomena but are more challenging to simulate than their equilibrium counterparts. Here, we introduce the Quantum High-Frequency Floquet Simulation (QHiFFS) algorithm as a method to simulate fast-driven quantum systems on quantum hardware. Central to QHiFFS is the concept of a kick operator which transforms the system into a basis where the dynamics is governed by a time-independent effective Hamiltonian. This allows prior methods for time-independent simulation to be lifted to simulate Floquet systems. We use the periodically driven biaxial next-nearest neighbor Ising (BNNNI) model, a natural test bed for quantum frustrated magnetism and criticality, as a case study to illustrate our algorithm. We implemented a 20-qubit simulation of the driven two-dimensional BNNNI model on Quantinuum’s trapped ion quantum computer. Our error analysis shows that QHiFFS exhibits not only a cubic advantage in driving frequency ω but also a linear advantage in simulation time t compared to Trotterization.

Abstract The concept of resilience has changed over time and nowadays it refers to the positive adaptation to life adversities, rather than to the absence of a pathological response normally occurring in susceptible people. Based on our previous data showing that the exposure to the chronic mild stress (CMS) paradigm differently affected bioenergetics in the ventral hippocampus of vulnerable and resilient animals, here we investigated whether resilience is a stable trait or if the energetic strategy set in motion to sustain resilience unveils a vulnerability feature in a more dynamic situation. To this aim, vulnerable and resilient rats after 6 weeks of CMS were subjected to a further acute, unfamiliar restraint stress (ARS) and metabolomic studies were conducted in the ventral hippocampus. We observed that exposure to a single novel challenge negatively affects the fuel utilization of resilient animals. Indeed, while they increase glycolysis to sustain the non-hedonic phenotype when exposed to CMS, they shift to fatty acid β-oxidation after ARS, as vulnerable animals following CMS, suggesting that the energy strategy that guarantees resilience is fragile and can be negatively modified by a different environmental condition. These results suggest that strengthening resilience to foster individuals to bounce back from stressful life events may represent a strategy to decrease vulnerability or prevent the risk of relapsing to a pathological state.

With the advancement of computational network science, its research scope has significantly expanded beyond static graphs to encompass more complex structures. The introduction of streaming, temporal, multilayer, and hypernetwork approaches has brought new possibilities and imposed additional requirements. For instance, by utilising these advancements, one can model structures such as social networks in a much more refined manner, which is particularly relevant in simulations of the spreading processes. Unfortunately, the pace of advancement is often too rapid for existing computational packages to keep up with the functionality updates. This results in a significant proliferation of tools used by researchers and, consequently, a lack of a universally accepted technological stack that would standardise experimental methods (as seen, e.g., in machine learning). This article addresses that issue by presenting an extended version of the Network Diffusion library. First, a survey of the existing approaches and toolkits for simulating spreading phenomena is shown, and then, an overview of the framework functionalities. Finally, we report four case studies conducted with the package to demonstrate its usefulness: the impact of sanitary measures on the spread of COVID-19, the comparison of information diffusion on two temporal network models, and the effectiveness of seed selection methods in the task of influence maximisation in multilayer networks. We conclude the paper with a critical assessment of the library and the outline of still awaiting challenges to standardise research environments in computational network science.

Abstract The study analyzes the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions for the human–environment relations through the lenses of biophilic design. The mixed-method quantitative and qualitative explanatory research combines contextual and personal variables, such as, among others, country, age group, gender, overcrowding, time spent outside, access to nature/food and the exposure to biophilic elements, during and after the lockdown. The results indicate that psychological pressure on individuals caused by pandemic restrictions imposed early 2020, triggered changes in human-environmental relation. More precisely, our comparative analysis of six European countries (Italy, Germany, Poland, Spain, Denmark and Sweden) indicates that people-environment relations do not depend on the objective severity of country-wise restrictions, but rather on the individual perceptions of these restrictions. The results complement the lack of the research for the role of biophilic design in understanding and enhancing human–environment relations during the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and thereafter.

Abstract Susceptibility to diseases and fear of infections might vary intra-individually, depending on life circumstances. The main aims of the current research were to examine whether perceived vulnerability to disease (PVD) is higher in expectant women and their partners as compared to their non-pregnant peers (Study 1), and to test whether a mother’s disease aversion during pregnancy relates to health of her newborn (Study 2). In Study 1 we collected cross-sectional data from 412 men and women varying in parenthood status. Pregnant female participants were more likely to exhibit higher levels of PVD as compared with childless peers, although mothers also reported relatively high PVD scores. PVD in men, generally lower than that of women, seemed to be rather independent of their parenthood status. In Study 2, a sample of 200 pregnant women completed the PVD scale during the second pregnancy trimester and a follow-up survey after their child was born. We found that PVD in pregnant women was not related to further health outcomes in their newborns. Birth weight, average Apgar score, and general health of a newborn were not associated with the pregnancy-period mother’s PVD score. However, the probability of giving birth to a child with 10 Apgar points was higher in younger mothers and tended to decrease with the increasing number of health issues before pregnancy. Overall, this research contributes to understanding of the health-oriented beliefs of expectant parents and parents of infants, but it also shows that the possible, PVD-related disease avoidance has a relatively little effect on basic markers of a newborn’s health.

Abstract This study aimed to compare the gut and oral microbiota composition of professional male football players and amateurs. Environmental and behavioral factors are well known to modulate intestinal microbiota composition. Active lifestyle behaviors are involved in the improvement of metabolic and inflammatory parameters. Exercise promotes adaptational changes in human metabolic capacities affecting microbial homeostasis. Twenty professional football players and twelve amateurs were invited to the study groups. Fecal and oral microbiota were analyzed using next-generation sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. Diversity in the oral microbiota composition was similar in amateurs and professionals, while the increase in training intensity reduced the number of bacterial species. In contrast, the analysis of the intestinal microbiota showed the greatest differentiation between professional football players and amateurs, especially during intensive training. Firmicutes were characterized by the largest population in all the studied groups. Intensive physical activity increases the abundance of butyrate and succinate-producing bacteria affecting host metabolic homeostasis, suggesting a very beneficial role for the host immune system's microbiome homeostasis and providing a proper function of the host immune system.

Abstract Background Equivalent efficacy and comparable pharmacokinetic, immunogenicity, and safety profiles of the biosimilar BAT1806/BIIB800 and reference tocilizumab (TCZ) in participants with moderate-to-severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have been reported up to week 24 (treatment period [TP] 1) of the phase 3 study. Here we present results for TP2 (study weeks 24–48). Methods In this phase 3, multicenter, multiregional, double-blind, active-controlled, equivalence study, participants with active RA despite methotrexate were randomized (1:1:2) to intravenous administration of 8 mg/kg TCZ every 4 weeks to week 48 (TCZ group), or TCZ to week 24 followed by BAT1806/BIIB800 to week 48 (TCZ to BAT1806/BIIB800 group), or BAT1806/BIIB800 to week 48 (BAT1806/BIIB800 group). Efficacy in TP2 was evaluated using American College of Rheumatology (ACR) response criteria (ACR20/50/70) and change from baseline in Disease Activity Score on 28 joints (DAS28). Pharmacokinetics (trough levels), safety, and immunogenicity were also evaluated. Results Of 621 randomized participants, 577 (92.9%) completed TP1 and entered TP2 (TCZ: N = 145 [93.5%]; TCZ to BAT1806/BIIB800: N = 142 [92.2%]; BAT1806/BIIB800: N = 290 [92.9%]). Proportions of ACR20 responders were similar between treatment groups throughout TP2 (87.8%, 90.3%, and 90.4%, respectively, at week 48), as were proportions of ACR50 and ACR70 responders, and reduction in DAS28. Drug trough levels and antidrug antibody incidences were comparable between the treatment groups. Adverse events were balanced across the treatment groups and no fatal events were reported. Conclusion In TP2, efficacy, safety, immunogenicity, and pharmacokinetic profiles were comparable between the TCZ, TCZ to BAT1806/BIIB800, and BAT1806/BIIB800 groups.
