1. LIMA (v2.0): A full two-moment cloud microphysical scheme for the mesoscale non-hydrostatic model Meso-NH v5-6.

Abstract: A full two-moment microphysics parameterization of the LIMA scheme (with LIMA standing for Liquid Ice Multiple Aerosols and hereafter named LIMA v2.0) has been developed and successfully implemented in the Meso-NH cloud-resolving model. The novelty of the scheme is a set of prognostic equations of the number concentration of each precipitating ice category (snow/aggregates, graupel, and hail), in addition to the prediction of the mass mixing ratios. As a result, new microphysical conversion rates are introduced and explicitly computed using the size distributions of the hydrometeors. The new LIMA v2.0 scheme has been tested for an idealized deep convection case against the original LIMA scheme characterized by an empirical number-concentration–mixing-ratio relationship applied to the precipitating ice. Inclusion of number concentration equations for the snow/aggregates and graupel significantly alters the microphysical structure and dynamical evolution of the simulated supercell. When comparing to the results obtained with the previous version of LIMA, the new v2.0 of the scheme tends to increase the pristine ice mixing ratio; to decrease the other ice hydrometeors by slowing down the growing processes of snow/aggregates, graupel, and hail; and to enhance the feedbacks between raindrops and the ice-phase hydrometeors. This comparison also emphasizes the unreasonable diagnostic approach used to estimate the number concentration of precipitating ice particles in the previous version of the scheme. Abstract: This paper presents a hybrid approach to model warm-rain processes, merging the diverse schemes of bulk and detailed (bin) microphysics. In the bulk scheme, the key assumption is that the exact saturation is maintained inside a cloud. In contrast, the supersaturation inside a cloud is predicted in the bin scheme and is applied to calculate the diffusional growth of cloud droplets. Predicting the supersaturation is numerically cumbersome, however, and typically requires spatial and temporal resolutions that are significantly higher than those that can be applied in the bulk scheme. At the same time, supersaturations inside clouds are small, and the condensate amounts in bulk and bin schemes differ insignificantly. This critical observation forms a starting point for the hybrid bulk-bin approach. In this approach, when the cloud water first appears, the activation scheme inserts cloud droplets at the low end of the bin representation. Subsequent diffusional and eventually accretional growth shift the spectrum toward larger sizes so that the saturation inside a cloud is maintained. Details of the hybrid approach are discussed in this paper, and the validation against the traditional bin scheme in a framework of the adiabatic rising parcel is presented. Before the scheme can be applied to the multidimensional cloud model, a ID advection-condensation problem of Grabowski and Smolarkiewicz is used to address the issue of the numerical difficulties that finite- difference schemes experience near cloud edges. In the bulk case, these are in the form of condensation rate overshoots and undershoots; and this aspect requires special attention in the hybrid scheme. A novel approach is developed that provides a physically consistent solution near cloud edges using the hybrid bulk-bin scheme. The key is to allow grid boxes near the edges to be partly cloudy and to include spectral changes of cloud droplets that take this into account. Application of the hybrid scheme to an idealized 2D problem of moist thermal rising from rest and producing rain illustrates the application of the scheme to practical problems of cloud dynamics and warm-rain microphysics. 6. Radiative transfer simulations using mesoscale cloud model outputs: comparisons with passive microwave and infrared satellite observations for midlatitudes

Abstract: Real midlatitude meteorological cases are simulated over western Europe with the cloud mesoseale model Meso-NH, and the outputs are used to calculate brightness temperatures at microwave frequencies with the Atmospheric Transmission at Microwave (ATM) radiative transfer model. Satellite-observed brightness temperatures (TBs) from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Unit B (AMSU-B) and the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) are compared to the simulated ones. In this paper, one specific situation is examined in detail. The infrared responses have also been calculated and compared to the Meteosat coincident observations. Overall agreement is obtained between the simulated and the observed brightness temperatures in the microwave and in the infrared. The large-scale dynamical structure of the cloud system is well captured by Meso-NH. However, in regions with large quantities of frozen hydrometeors, the comparison shows that the simulated microwave TBs are higher than the measured ones in the window channels at high frequencies, indicating that the calculation does not predict enough scattering. The factors responsible for the scattering (frozen particle distribution, calculation of particle dielectric properties, and nonsphericity of the particles) are analyzed. To assess the quality of the cloud and precipitation simulations by Meso-NH, the microphysical fields predicted by the German Lokal-Modell are also considered. Results show that in these midlatitude situations, the treatment of the snow category has a high impact on the simulated brightness temperatures. The snow scattering parameters are tuned to match the discrete dipole approximation calculations and to obtain a good agreement between simulations and observations even in the areas with significant frozen particles. Analysis of the other meteorological simulations confirms these results. Comparing simulations and observations in the microwave provides a powerful evaluation of resolved clouds in mesoscale models, especially the precipitating ice phase.

Abstract: The Tropical Warm Pool.International Cloud Experiment (TWP ]ICE) provided extensive observational data sets designed to initialize, force, and constrain atmospheric model simulations. In this first of a two ]part study, precipitation and cloud structures within nine cloud ]resolving model simulations are compared with scanning radar reflectivity and satellite infrared brightness temperature observations during an active monsoon period from 19 to 25 January 2006. Seven of nine simulations overestimate convective area by 20% or more leading to general overestimation of convective rainfall. This is balanced by underestimation of stratiform rainfall by 5% to 50% despite overestimation of stratiform area by up to 65% because of a preponderance of very low stratiform rain rates in all simulations. All simulations fail to reproduce observed radar reflectivity distributions above the melting level in convective regions and throughout the troposphere in stratiform regions. Observed precipitation ]sized ice reaches higher altitudes than simulated precipitation ]sized ice despite some simulations that predict lower than observed top ]of ]atmosphere infrared brightness temperatures. For the simulations that overestimate radar reflectivity aloft, graupel is the cause with one ]moment microphysics schemes whereas snow is the cause with two ]moment microphysics schemes. Differences in simulated radar reflectivity are more highly correlated with differences in mass mean melted diameter (Dm) than differences in ice water content. Dm is largely dependent on the mass ]dimension relationship and gamma size distribution parameters such as size intercept (N0) and shape parameter (m). Having variable density, variable N0, or m greater than zero produces radar reflectivities closest to those observed.

15. A model of marine boundary-layer cloudiness for mesoscale applications

Abstract: A one-dimensional version of a multilevel mesoscale model is used to represent the cloud-topped boundary layer (CTBL). Turbulent exchanges are parameterized with a prognostic equation for the turbulent kinetic energy and an improved length-scale formulation. Furthermore, the scheme is extended to give a statistical description of the subgrid-scale condensation with a one-and-a-half-order closure. Several observed reference cases are simulated in order to test the model against observational data and results obtained with a higher-order turbulence model. The latter one is used as a powerful approach for testing the closure of the second-order moments involved in the partial cloudiness scheme. Two of the reference cases are extracted from stratocumulus (Sc) observations off the coast of the United Kingdom with a purely buoyancy-driven and a purely shear-driven CTBL, respectively. The third experiment tries to reproduce a case of Californian Sc clouds where both turbulent effects are important. Finally, the last numerical experiment concentrates on a cloudiness transition case observed during FIRE (First International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project Regional Experiment) with a series of soundings documenting the cloudiness transition from a solid Sc cloud deck over a partly covered region to a clear-sky region. The model results are shown to be in reasonable agreement with both observational data and numerical outputs from the higher-order turbulence model. Finally, it is shown that the partial cloudiness scheme does not only produce more realistic cloudiness and cloud water content than a simple 'all or nothing' condensation scheme, but that it also assures model stability by producing a smooth onset of condensation.

Abstract: This paper presents the Meso-NH model version 5.4. Meso-NH is an atmospheric non hydrostatic research model that is applied to a broad range of resolutions, from synoptic to turbulent scales, and is designed for studies of physics and chemistry. It is a limited-area model employing advanced numerical techniques, including monotonic advection schemes for scalar transport and fourth-order centered or odd-order WENO advection schemes for momentum. The model includes state-of-the-art physics parameterization schemes that are important to represent convective-scale phenomena and turbulent eddies, as well as flows at larger scales. In addition, Meso-NH has been expanded to provide capabilities for a range of Earth system prediction applications such as chemistry and aerosols, electricity and lightning, hydrology, wildland fires, volcanic eruptions, and cyclones with ocean coupling. Here, we present the main innovations to the dynamics and physics of the code since the pioneer paper of Lafore et al. (1998) and provide an overview of recent applications and couplings.

Abstract: International audience; The main issue in front of the cyclone threat is to forecast both the track, the intensity and the main consequences (wind, precipitation, storm surge and swell) associated to a tropical cyclone. The past decade has been marked by significant advances in numerical weather prediction of cyclones, which have greatly contributed to the steady decrease of forecast track errors. However, the intensity forecasting remains a major issue in scientific research. The key role of cloud microphysics and aerosols on the structure and intensity of tropical storms has been recently underlined.A 2-moment microphysics scheme (LIMA ; Vié et al., 2015) is being coupled to an aerosol scheme (ORILAM ; Tulet et al., 2005) in the French mesoscale model Meso-NH. Aerosols are initialized by MACC analysis from ECMWF which also monitor the lateral boundary conditions of the aerosol fields (prognostic variables). A parameterization of the emission of sea salt aerosol is implemented as the main source of cloud condensation nuclei in the context of the South-West Indian Ocean.A first evaluation of this aerosol-cloud-microphysics coupling will be done through a simulation of the tropical cyclone Dumile that passed next to La Réunion in January 2013. Available observations (CALIPSO, CLOUDSAT, TRMM and METEOSAT satellites, ground radar and observations from the Maïdo observatory and Meteo-France ground stations) will be used to validate the simulation. The sensitivity of the system structure and intensity to the aerosol type and concentration will be analyzed.

35. SAETTA: high resolution 3D mapping of the total lightning activity in the Mediterranean basin over Corsica, with a focus on a MCS event.

Abstract: Deployed in the mountainous island of Corsica for thunderstorm monitoring purpose in the Mediterranean Basin, SAETTA is a network of 12 LMA stations (Lightning Mapping Array, designed by New Mexico Tech, USA) that allows the 3-D mapping of VHF radiations emitted by cloud discharges in the 60-66 MHz band. It works at high temporal (80 µs) and spatial (tens of meters at best) resolutions within a range of about 350 km. Originally deployed in May 2014, SAETTA was commissioned during the summer and fall seasons and is now permanently operational since April 2016 until at least the end of 2020. We first evaluate the performances of SAETTA through the radial, azimuthal, and altitude errors of VHF sources localization with the theoretical model of Thomas et al. (2004). We also compute on a 240 km x 240 km domain the minimum altitude at which a VHF source can be detected by at least 6 stations by taking into account the mask effect of the relief. We then report the 3-year observations on the same domain in terms of number of lightning days per square kilometer and in terms of lightning days integrated on the whole domain. The lightning activity is first maximum in June because of daytime convection driven by solar energy input, but concentrates on a specific hot spot in July just above the crossroad of the three main valleys. This hot spot is probably due to the low-level convergence of moist air fluxes from sea breezes channeled by the three valleys. Lighting activity increases again in September due to numerous small thunderstorms above the sea and to some high precipitating events. Finally we report lightning observations of unusual high altitude discharges associated with the mesoscale convective system of June 8, 2015. Most of them are small discharges on top of an intense convective core during convective surges. They are considered in the flash classification of Thomas et al. (2003) as small-isolated and short-isolated flashes. The other high altitude discharges, much less numerous, are long range flashes that develop through the stratiform region and suddenly undergo upward propagations towards an uppermost thin layer of charge. This observation supports the recent conceptual model of Dye and Bansemer (2019) that explains such upper level layer of charge in the stratiform region by the development of a non-riming ice collisional charging in a mesoscale updraft. Abstract: International audience; The Mediterranean region is frequently affected by heavy precipitation events (HPE) associated with flash-floods (FF), landslides and mudslides each year that cost several thousands millions of euros in damage and causing too often casualties. Within the framework of the 10-year international HyMeX program dedicated to the hydrological cycle and related processes in the Mediterranean, a major field campaign has been dedicated to heavy precipitation and flash-floods from September to November 2012. The 2-month field campaign took place over the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea and its surrounding coastal regions in France, Italy and Spain. The observation strategy aimed at documenting four key components leading to heavy precipitation and flash-flooding in that region: (i) the marine atmospheric flows that transport moist and conditionally unstable air towards the coasts; (ii) the Mediterranean Sea as a moisture and energy source; (iii) the dynamics and microphysics of the convective systems; (iv) the hydrological processes during flash-floods. The presentation will briefly provide the rationale for developing this field campaign and an overview of the design and execution of the field campaign (Ducrocq et al, 2013). Highlights on specific Intense Observations Periods (IOPs) will illustrate some first results using aircraft and ground-based observations and associated modeling studies in terms of (i) atmospheric process understanding, (ii) HPE and FF predictability studies and (iii) NWP validation and improvement. Abstract: International audience; The PEACH (Projet en Electricité Atmosphérique pour la Campagne HyMeX) project is the Atmospheric Electricity component of the HyMeX (Hydrology cycle in the Mediterranean Experiment) experiment. PEACH aims at measuring and analyzing the lightning activity and electrical state of thunderstorms over the Mediterranean Sea. During the SOP1 (Special Observation Period; September-October 2012), records of four European operational lightning detection networks (ATDNET, UKMO; EUCLID; LINET, nowcast; ZEUS, NOA) and the NMT Lightning Mapping Array (LMA) were used to document the total lightning activity over South-Eastern France. Other research instruments such as induction rings (LA), electric field measurements (OVE; LA; NMT), video camera (OVE; ONERA), microbarometer and microphone arrays (CEA) were deployed to document the properties of the lightning flashes as well as the electrical state of parent thunderclouds. These observations are used to characterize the evolution of the electrical activity during the life cycle of SOP storms in conjunction with microphysics and kinematics description of the parent storms as derived from ground-based radar, ground-based and airborne in situ observations. Interpretation of the results are supported by the use of cloud models (MM5; MESO-NH with electrification and lightning schemes).We will discuss some of the recorded cases at both flash and storm scales, including the 14 October 2012 tornado case that occurred North of Marseille. We will also introduce some of the products that will be made available to the HyMeX Community.

Abstract: International audience; Observations made during the TWP-ICE campaign are used to drive and evaluate thirteen cloud-resolving model simulations with periodic lateral boundary conditions. The simulations employ 2D and 3D dynamics, one- and two-moment microphysics, several variations on large-scale forcing, and the use of observationally derived aerosol properties to prognose droplet numbers. When domain means are averaged over a 6-day active monsoon period, all simulations reproduce observed surface precipitation rate but not its structural distribution. Simulated fractional areas covered by convective and stratiform rain are uncorrelated with one another, and are both variably overpredicted by up to a factor of ∼2. Stratiform area fractions are strongly anticorrelated with outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) but are negligibly correlated with ice water path (IWP), indicating that ice spatial distribution controls OLR more than mean IWP. Overpredictions of OLR tend to be accompanied by underpredictions of reflected shortwave radiation (RSR). When there are two simulations differing only in microphysics scheme or large-scale forcing, the one with smaller stratiform area tends to exhibit greater OLR and lesser RSR by similar amounts. After ∼10 days, simulations reach a suppressed monsoon period with a wide range of mean precipitable water vapor, attributable in part to varying overprediction of cloud-modulated radiative flux divergence compared with observationally derived values. Differences across the simulation ensemble arise from multiple sources, including dynamics, microphysics, and radiation treatments. Close agreement of spatial and temporal averages with observations may not be expected, but the wide spreads of predicted stratiform fraction and anticorrelated OLR indicate a need for more rigorous observation-based evaluation of the underlying micro- and macrophysical properties of convective and stratiform structures.

Abstract: International audience; A Saharan dust event affected the Rhine valley in southwestern Germany and eastern France on 1 August 2007 during the Convective and Orographically induced Precipitation Study (COPS) experiment. Prior to an episode of intense convection, a layer of dry, clean air capped by a moist, dusty layer was observed using Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO) and airborne and ground-based lidar observations from North Africa to western Europe. The origin of the different layers was investigated using the regional model Meso-NH. For the purpose of modelling evaluation, a lidar simulator was developed for direct comparison of observed and simulated vertical structures of the lidar backscattered signal. Overall, the model reproduced the vertical structure of dust probed several times by the different lidar systems during its long-range transport. From Lagrangian back trajectories it was found that the dust was mobilized from sources in Mauritania six days earlier, while the dry layer subsided over the north Atlantic. Off the Moroccan coasts, the dry layer folded down beneath the dusty air mass and the two-layer structure was advected to the Rhine valley in about two days. By heating the atmosphere, the dust layer changed the static stability of the atmosphere and thus the occurrence of convection. A study of sensitivity to the radiative effect of dust showed a better prediction of precipitation when a dust prognostic scheme was used rather than climatology or when dust effects were ignored. This result suggests that dust episodes that occur prior to convective events might be important for quantitative precipitation forecasts

Abstract: International audience; Clouds play an active role in the processing and cycling of chemicals in the atmosphere. Particularly, it is known that a large portion of the atmospheric particulate sulphate, which contributes to a significant fraction of the total PM mass, is produced in cloud via aqueous-phase oxidation. As a result, most of the current aerosol forecast models do include the representation of in-cloud oxidation. On the other hand, the modelling of cloud processing of gases and aerosols and its evaluation are challenging. Past studies have shown that the modeled cloud processing of gases and aerosols depends critically on the predicted cloud microphysics fields. Furthermore, observations suited for evaluating cloud chemistry in models are extremely limited, and there is also the issue with scale disparity (both temporal and spatial) between the model resolution and the observation. This study examines model simulations from three different regional/meso-scale aerosol models, WRF-CHEM (NOAA/ESRL), MESO-NHC (LA/CNRS), and AURAMS (EC), with a focus on cloud processing of urban-industrial plumes. The study case is based on airborne measurements from two flights during the ICARTT field campaign in summer 2004, when the National Research Council of Canada Convair 580 sampled in and below stratocumulus downwind of Chicago along each of the 84°W and 86°W meridians between 40.5 and 42.6°N. The Chicago urban plume was encountered along both meridians, and the observations indicate cloud processing. Model simulations of cloud microphysics, trace gases and aerosol particle concentrations are compared with aircraft observations. Uncertainties in model predicted gases and aerosol concentrations due to model resolution, microphysics and aqueous-phase chemistry parameterization will be assessed.
