Abstract

Featured Application: Featured Application: A Design of Experiments approach and multivariate analysis can help to understand the complex relationship between the chemical profile and the extraction conditions in the preparation of liqueurs such as the myrtle alcoholic drink. Preparation of myrtle liqueur through ethanol-based extraction is a widely employed methodology. Nevertheless, optimization of existing processes is possible, especially through a modern statistical multivariate approach. In this context, a Design of Experiments (DoE) approach was used to quantitatively assess for the first time the effect of the time, ethanol concentration, temperature, and the ratio between the Myrtus communis berries' weight and the extractant volume (v/w) on the amounts of anthocyanins, volatile compounds and dry residues in the liqueur. The kinetic profile relative to the volatile fraction variation during the process was described by gas chromatography (GC), while spectrophotometric analysis allowed quantification of the total anthocyanins and total polyphenols. Multiple response analysis showed that the maximum efficiencies in terms of the considered parameters (desirability function) were reached by setting the temperature to 25 °C and the ethanol percentage to 96% after 20 days of processing. Some hints as to the chemical instability and not negligible sensitivity of anthocyanins in relation to the experimental conditions for longer extraction times were also observed. Abstract

Salvia verbenaca is a perennial herbaceous plant well appreciated as medicinal herb which can be found in Mediterranean area, Europe, Africa and Asia. In this study, S. verbenaca flowers and leaves were collected in six different geographical areas of Sardinia (Italy). Information about the variation of the chemical composition of plants grown in different locations were obtained from gas chromatography analysis of the extracted essential oils. Gas chromatography analysis detected 33 compounds, which have been grouped in oxygenated monoterpenes, monoterpene hydrocarbons, sesquiterpenes and other compounds. The chemical composition of each group resulted significantly affected by sampling site in terms of geography and altitude. Concerning the geographical distribution of the detected chemicals, sesquiterpenes were found in considerable amount in three localities, monoterpenes hydrocarbons in two and other compounds were predominant only in one site. Abstract

Due to the high nutritional value as well as the appreciated sensory characteristic Citruscrop is one of the most popular fruits over the world. Albedo and flavedo are commonly discarded as waste and could represent an important by-product of food industry. In a circular economy contest we carried out a characterization of albedo and flavedo of Citrus limonvar pompia (pompia) followed by the evaluation of antioxidant potential and cytotoxic activity. The chemical analysis showed the presence of several functional ingredients such as the flavanones, naringin, neohesperidin, nereriocitrin and hesperidin while quinic acid resulted the main phenolic acid detected. The flavedo extract exerted a complete inhibition of the cholesterol oxidative process from 25 μg of extract. Pompiaextracts showed an inhibition of lipid oxidation in the β-carotene-linoleate system with an activity equivalent to about 0.31% (albedo) and 0.34% (flavedo) of the BHT activity, while the antiradical activity resulted equivalent to that of 62.90% (albedo) and 60.72% (flavedo) of the trolox activity. Finally, all extracts did not show any cytotoxic effect on differentiated Caco-2 cells by the AlamarBlue assay while exhibited, by MTT assay, a significant decrease in colon cancer Caco-2 cell viability.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: This study was performed to clarify the strategies of Penicillium digitatum during pathogenesis on citrus, assessing, on albedo plugs, the effects of treatment with sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), at two different pH values (5 and 8.3), on cell‐wall‐degrading enzyme activity over a period of 72 h. RESULTS: Treatment with NaHCO3, under alkaline pH, delayed the polygalacturonase activity for 72 h, or 48 h in the case of the pectin lyase, compared with the control or the same treatment at pH 5. In contrast, pectin methyl esterase activity rapidly increased after 24 h, in plugs dipped in the same solution. In this case, the activity remained higher than untreated or pH 5‐treated plugs up to 72 h. CONCLUSION: The rapid increase in pectin methyl esterase activity under alkaline conditions is presumably the strategy of the pathogen to lower the pH, soon after the initiation of infection, in order to restore an optimal environment for the subsequent polygalacturonase and pectin lyase action. In fact, at the same time, a low pH delayed the enzymatic activity of polygalacturonase and pectin lyase, the two enzymes that actually cleave the α‐1,4‐linkages between the galacturonic acid residues. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Ocotea puchury-major Mart. is a tree native to the Brazilian rain forest, where it is popularly known as puxurì. In local folk medicine the leaves are used for their sedative, gastroenteric and antireumatic properties. The morphoanatomical study determined those features useful in distinguishing this species from other closely related taxa. Chemical analysis was focused on the study of the volatile oil. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses indicated safrol as the main compound of the volatile oil (39%). The results confirm and authenticate the use of its leaves in folk medicine. Furthermore, safrol is economically important as the starting material for hemisynthesis of several products. The antimicrobial activity of the essential oil was studied which showed promising activity against environmental microorganisms as well as anti-inflammatory activity.

Abstract

The oil composition of Stachys glutinosa L. from two different areas of Sardinia was analyzed by GC/MS. The oil from Gallura plants was characterized by the four main constituents: terpinen-4-ol (12.7%), α-terpinyl acetate (10.6%), trans-cadina-1(6),4-diene (8.5%), and α-terpineol (8.4%) whilst α-cedrene (19.2%), α-terpineol (18.5%), terpinen-4-ol (12.6%), and α-terpinyl acetate (8.6%) were the main compounds in the oil from Ulassai plants. The oils showed good bacteriostatic activities against Vibrio cholerae (MIC 0.6%), all the Candida tested (1.25%) and Rodotorula rubra (2.5%). There were also bactericidal activities against Candida glabrata (1.25 %) and Rodotorula rubra (2.5%).

Abstract

The origin and taxonomy of C itrus monstruosa ( Rutaceae) are currently unknown and thus a nontargeted metabolomic analysis on the flavedo volatiles was performed. Headspace solid-phase micro extraction coupled with gas chromatography analysis was applied to eight C itrus spp. including Citrus monstruosa, and the chemical composition of the volatile organic compounds ( VOC) was analyzed to give a chemical comparison between different C itrus species. Forty-four metabolites were detected across the species: several monoterpenes were found in all C itrus spp. and among them limonene comes first in all C itrus spp. ranging from 96.7 to 66.7%. Conversely, some molecules were found to be specific for only a few of the samples. The classical univariate evaluation of the VOC data is unlikely to give objective data for the cultivar classification; a multivariate approach, principal component analysis, is an easy to use, powerful tool. Therefore, a chemometric comparison between chromatographic data of all C itrus spp. was performed with the aim of understanding the role of VOC in the discrimination of the eight studied cultivars. Practical Application A chemometrics' method was applied on the volatiles of eight C itrus spp. including C itrus monstruosa. Results were used to discriminate and classify C . monstruosa from several other C itrus spp. This method may also be used to discriminate other C itrus spp. as well as being applied to the volatiles-based classification of other botanicals.
