Search

We report on the multi-year evolution of the population of X-ray sources in the nuclear region of NGC 3621 based on Chandra, XMM-Newton and Swift observations. Among these, two sources, X1 and X5, after their first detection in 2008, seem to have faded below the detectability threshold, a most interesting fact as X1 is associated with the AGN of the galaxy. Two other sources, X3 and X6 are presented for the first time, the former showing a peculiar short-term variability in the latest available dataset, suggesting an egress from eclipse, hence belonging to the handful of known eclipsing ultra-luminous X-ray sources. One source, X4, previously known for its "heart-beat", i.e. a characteristic modulation in its signal with a period of $\approx1$ h, shows a steady behaviour in the latest observation. Finally, the brightest X-ray source in NGC 3621, here labelled X2, shows steady levels of flux across all the available datasets but a change in its spectral shape, reminiscent of the behaviours of Galactic disk-fed X-ray binaries., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables, 2 appendices available online. Galaxy clusters are expected to be dark matter (DM) reservoirs and storage rooms for the cosmic-ray protons (CRp) that accumulate along the cluster's formation history. Accordingly, they are excellent targets to search for signals of DM annihilation and decay at gamma-ray energies and are predicted to be sources of large-scale gamma-ray emission due to hadronic interactions in the intracluster medium. We estimate the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to detect diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Perseus galaxy cluster. We perform a detailed spatial and spectral modelling of the expected signal for the DM and the CRp components. For each, we compute the expected CTA sensitivity. The observing strategy of Perseus is also discussed. In the absence of a diffuse signal (non-detection), CTA should constrain the CRp to thermal energy ratio within the radius $R_{500}$ down to about $X_{500}<3\times 10^{-3}$, for a spatial CRp distribution that follows the thermal gas and a CRp spectral index $\alpha_{\rm CRp}=2.3$. Under the optimistic assumption of a pure hadronic origin of the Perseus radio mini-halo and depending on the assumed magnetic field profile, CTA should measure $\alpha_{\rm CRp}$ down to about $\Delta\alpha_{\rm CRp}\simeq 0.1$ and the CRp spatial distribution with 10% precision. Regarding DM, CTA should improve the current ground-based gamma-ray DM limits from clusters observations on the velocity-averaged annihilation cross-section by a factor of up to $\sim 5$, depending on the modelling of DM halo substructure. In the case of decay of DM particles, CTA will explore a new region of the parameter space, reaching models with $\tau_{\chi}>10^{27}$s for DM masses above 1 TeV. These constraints will provide unprecedented sensitivity to the physics of both CRp acceleration and transport at cluster scale and to TeV DM particle models, especially in the decay scenario., Comment: 93 pages (including author list, appendix and references), 143 figures. Since its start in 2014, the lightweight open source Python library Gammapy has come a long way to become a popular data analysis package for high-energy astrophysics. Selected as the official CTAO Science Analysis tool, it is also an approved analysis software within the H.E.S.S. and MAGIC collaborations. The first long-term version, Gammapy v1.0 was released on late 2022. It is compliant with several well-established data conventions in high-energy astrophysics, and provides serialised data products that are interoperable with other software. Event lists and instrument response functions curated within the same format from various instruments can be reduced to data binned in energy, time or spatial coordinates. Thereafter, the flux and morphology of one or more gamma-ray sources can be estimated using Poisson maximum likelihood fitting and assuming a variety of spectral, temporal and spatial models. Flux points, likelihood profiles and light curves extractions are supported. Complex user defined likelihoods and models can also be implemented. In this contribution, we will highlight the main features of Gammapy v1.0, including data reduction and analysis examples from different space and ground-based instruments, applications of various background rejection techniques, and a simultaneous fitting across multiple instruments with astrophysical models. We will also present our plans for the future, showcasing new features such as the support of different event types, unbinned likelihood analysis, spectral unfolding and transient source detections. The accretion flow / jet correlation in neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) is far less understood when compared to black hole (BH) LMXBs. In this paper we will present the results of a dense multi-wavelength observational campaign on the NS LMXB 4U 1820-30, including X-ray (Nicer, NuSTAR and AstroSAT) and quasi-simultaneous radio (ATCA) observations in 2022. 4U 1820-30 shows a peculiar 170 day super-orbital accretion modulation, during which the system evolves between "modes" of high and low X-ray flux. During our monitoring, the source did not show any transition to a full hard state. X-ray spectra were well described using a disc blackbody, a Comptonisation spectrum along with a Fe K emission line at 6.6 keV. Our results show that the observed X-ray flux modulation is almost entirely produced by changes in the size of the region providing seed photons for the Comptonisation spectrum. This region is large (about 15 km) in the high mode and likely coincides with the whole boundary layer, while it shrinks significantly (<10 km) in low mode. The electron temperature of the corona and the observed RMS variability in the hard X-rays also exhibit a slight increase in low mode. As the source moves from high to low mode, the radio emission due to the jet becomes about 5 fainter. These radio changes appear not to be strongly connected to the hard-to-soft transitions as in BH systems, while they seem to be connected mostly to variations observed in the boundary layer., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures. The transient X-ray source MAXI J1810-222 was discovered in 2018 and has been active ever since. A long combined radio and X-ray monitoring campaign was performed with ATCA and Swift respectively. It has been proposed that MAXI J1810-222 is a relatively distant black hole X-ray binary, albeit showing a very peculiar outburst behaviour. Here, we report on the spectral study of this source making use of a large sample of NICER observations performed between 2019 February and 2020 September. We detected a strong spectral absorption feature at $\sim$1 keV, which we have characterised with a physical photoionisation model. Via a deep scan of the parameters space, we obtained evidence for a spectral-state dependent outflow, with mildly relativistic speeds. In particular, the soft and intermediate states point to a hot plasma outflowing at 0.05-0.15 $c$. This speeds rule-out thermal winds and, hence, they suggest that such outflows could be radiation pressure or (most likely) magnetically-driven winds. The ASTRI (Astrofisica con Specchi a Tecnologia Replicante Italiana) Mini-Array will be composed of nine imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes at the Observatorio del Teide site. The array will be best suited for astrophysical observations in the 0.3-200 TeV range with an angular resolution of few arc-minutes and an energy resolution of 10-15\%. A core-science programme in the first four years will be devoted to a limited number of key targets, addressing the most important open scientific questions in the very-high energy domain. At the same time, thanks to a wide field of view of about 10 degrees, ASTRI Mini-Array will observe many additional field sources, which will constitute the basis for the long-term observatory programme that will eventually cover all the accessible sky. In this paper, we review different astrophysical Galactic environments, e.g. pulsar wind nebulae, supernova remnants, and gamma-ray binaries, and show the results from a set of ASTRI Mini-Array simulations of some of these field sources made to highlight the expected performance of the array (even at large offset angles) and the important additional observatory science that will complement the core-science program., Comment: Accepted for publication in Journal of High-Energy Astrophysics

The ASTRI (Astrofisica con Specchi a Tecnologia Replicante Italiana) Project led by the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) is developing and will deploy at the Observatorio del Teide a mini-array (ASTRI Mini-Array) composed of nine telescopes similar to the small-size dual-mirror Schwarzschild-Couder telescope (ASTRI-Horn) currently operating on the slopes of Mt. Etna in Sicily. The ASTRI Mini-Array will surpass the current Cherenkov telescope array differential sensitivity above a few tera-electronvolt (TeV), extending the energy band well above hundreds of TeV. This will allow us to explore a new window of the electromagnetic spectrum, by convolving the sensitivity performance with excellent angular and energy resolution figures. Despite two decades of studies, it is still not clear whether ULX spectral transitions are due to stochastic variability in the wind or variations in the accretion rate or in the source geometry. The compact object is also unknown for most ULXs. In order to place constraints onto such scenarios and on the structure of the accretion disc, we studied the temporal evolution of the spectral components of the variable source NGC 55 ULX-1. Using recent and archival data obtained with the XMM-Newton satellite, we modelled the spectra with two blackbody components which we interpret as thermal emission from the inner accretion flow and the regions around or beyond the spherization radius. The luminosity-temperature (L-T) relation of each spectral component agrees with the L proportional T^4 relationship expected from a thin disc model, which suggests that the accretion rate is close to the Eddington limit. However, there are some small deviations at the highest luminosities, possibly due to an expansion of the disc and a contribution from the wind at higher accretion rates. Assuming that such deviations are due to the crossing of the Eddington or supercritical accretion rate, we estimate a compact object mass of 6-14 Msun, favouring a stellar-mass black hole as the accretor., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are a class of accreting compact objects with X-ray luminosities above 10$^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The average number of ULXs per galaxy is still not well constrained, especially given the uncertainty on the fraction of ULX transients. Here, we report the identification of a new transient ULX in the galaxy NGC 55 (which we label as ULX-2), thanks to recent XMM-Newton and the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory observations. This object was previously classified as a transient X-ray source with a luminosity around a few 10$^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in a 2010 XMM-Newton observation. Thanks to new and deeper observations ($\sim$ 130 ks each), we show that the source reaches a luminosity peak $>1.6 \times 10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The X-ray spectrum of ULX-2 is much softer than in previous observations and fits in the class of soft ULXs. It can be well described using a model with two thermal components, as often found in ULXs. The time scales of the X-ray variability are of the order of a month and are likely driven by small changes in the accretion rate or due to super-orbital modulations, attributed to precession of the accretion disc, which is similar to other ULXs., Comment: 6 pages, including 4 figures and 2 tables, accepted for pubblication in MNRAS

We present results from radio and X-ray observations of the X-ray transient MAXI J1810-222. The nature of the accretor in this source has not been identified. In this paper, we show results from a quasi-simultaneous radio and X-ray monitoring campaign taken with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), the Neil Gehrels Swift observatory X-ray telescope (XRT), and the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT). We also analyse the X-ray temporal behaviour using observations from the Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). Results show a seemingly peculiar X-ray spectral evolution of MAXI J1810-222 during this outburst, where the source was initially only detected in the soft X-ray band for the early part of the outburst. Then, ~200 days after MAXI J1810-222 was first detected the hard X-ray emission increased and the source transitioned to a long-lived (~1.5 years) bright, harder X-ray state. After this hard state, MAXI J1810-222 returned back to a softer state, before fading and transitioning again to a harder state and then appearing to follow a more typical outburst decay. From the X-ray spectral and timing properties, and the source's radio behaviour, we argue that the results from this study are most consistent with MAXI J1810-222 being a relatively distant ($\gtrsim$6 kpc) black hole X-ray binary. A sufficiently large distance to source can simply explain the seemingly odd outburst evolution that was observed, where only the brightest portion of the outburst was detectable by the all-sky X-ray telescopes., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

ZTF J213056.71+442046.5 is the prototype of a small class of recently discovered compact binaries composed of a white dwarf and a hot subdwarf that fills its Roche-lobe. Its orbital period of only 39 min is the shortest known for the objects in this class. Evidence for a high orbital inclination (i=86 deg) and for the presence of an accretion disk has been inferred from a detailed modeling of its optical photometric and spectroscopic data. We report the results of an XMM-Newton observation carried out on 2021 January 7. ZTF J213056.71+442046.5 was clearly detected by the Optical Monitor, which showed a periodic variability in the UV band (200-400 nm), with a light curve similar to that seen at longer wavelengths. Despite accretion on the white dwarf at an estimated rate of the order of 10^{-9} M_sun/yr, no X-rays were detected with the EPIC instrument, with a limit of ~10^{30} erg/s on the 0.2-12 keV luminosity. Soft Ultra-Luminous X-ray (ULXs) sources are a subclass of the ULXs that can switch from a supersoft spectral state, where most of the luminosity is emitted below 1 keV, to a soft spectral state with significant emission above 1 keV. In a few systems, dips have been observed. The mechanism behind this state transition and the dips nature are still debated. To investigate these issues, we obtained a long XMM-Newton monitoring campaign of a member of this class, NGC 247 ULX-1. We computed the hardness-intensity diagram for the whole dataset and identified two different branches: the normal branch and the dipping branch, which we study with four and three hardness-intensity resolved spectra, respectively. All seven spectra are well described by two thermal components: a colder ($kT_{\rm bb}$ $\sim$ 0.1-0.2 keV) black-body, interpreted as emission from the photo-sphere of a radiatively-driven wind, and a hotter ($kT_{\rm disk}$ $\sim$ 0.6 keV) multicolour disk black-body, likely due to reprocessing of radiation emitted from the innermost regions. In addition, a complex pattern of emission and absorption lines has been taken into account based on previous high-resolution spectroscopic results. We studied the evolution of spectral parameters and the flux of the two thermal components along the two branches and discuss two scenarios possibly connecting the state transition and the dipping phenomenon. It is thought that ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are mainly powered by super-Eddington accreting neutron stars or black holes as shown by recent discovery of X-ray pulsations and relativistic winds. This work presents a follow up study of the spectral evolution over two decades of the pulsing ULX NGC 1313 X-2, in order to understand the structure of the accretion disc. The primary objective is to determine the shape and nature of the dominant spectral components by investigating their variability with the changes in the source luminosity. We have performed a spectral analysis over the canonical 0.3-10 keV energy band of all the high signal-to-noise XMM-Newton observations, and we have tested a number of different spectral models, which should approximate super-Eddington accretion discs. The baseline model consists of two thermal blackbody components with different temperatures plus an exponential cutoff powerlaw. In particular, the hotter and brighter thermal component describes the emission from the super-Eddington inner disc and the cutoff powerlaw the contribution from the accretion column of the neutron star. Instead, the cooler component describes the emission from the outer region of the disc close to the spherisation radius and the wind. The luminosity-temperature relation for the cool component follows a negative trend, which is not consistent with L$\propto$T$^4$, as expected from a sub-Eddington thin disc of Shakura-Sunayev, nor with L$\propto$T$^2$, as expected for advection-dominated disc, but would rather agree with a wind-dominated X-ray emitting region. Instead, the (L,T) relation for the hotter component is somewhere in between the first two theoretical scenarios. Our findings agree with the super-Eddington scenario and provide further detail on the disc structure. The candidate PeVatron MGRO J1908+06, which shows a hard spectrum beyond 100 TeV, is one of the most peculiar $\gamma$-ray sources in the Galactic plane. Its complex morphology and some possible counterparts spatially related with the VHE emission region, preclude to distinguish between a hadronic or leptonic nature of the $\gamma$-ray emission. In this paper we illustrate a new multiwavelength analysis of MGRO J1908+06, with the aim to shed light on its nature and the origin of its ultra high-energy emission. We performed an analysis of the $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO molecular line emission demonstrating the presence of dense molecular clouds spatially correlated with the source region. We also analyzed 12-years of Fermi-LAT data between 10 GeV and 1 TeV finding a counterpart with a hard spectrum ($\Gamma \sim 1.6$). Our reanalysis of XMM-Newton data allowed us to put a more stringent constraint on the X-ray flux from this source. We demonstrate that a single accelerator cannot explain the whole set of multiwavelength data, regardless of whether it accelerates protons or electrons, but a 2-zone model is needed to explain the emission from MGRO J1908+06. The VHE emission seems most likely the superposition of a TeV PWN powered by PSR J1907+0602, in the southern part, and of the interaction between the supernova remnant G40.5-0.5 and the molecular clouds towards the northern region., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Most ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are believed to be stellar mass black holes or neutron stars accreting beyond the Eddington limit. Determining the nature of the compact object and the accretion mode from broadband spectroscopy is currently a challenge, but the observed timing properties provide insight into the compact object and details of the geometry and accretion processes. Here we report a timing analysis for an 800 ks XMM-Newton campaign on the supersoft ultraluminous X-ray source, NGC 247 ULX-1. Deep and frequent dips occur in the X-ray light curve, with the amplitude increasing with increasing energy band. Power spectra and coherence analysis reveals the dipping preferentially occurs on $\sim 5$ ks and $\sim 10$ ks timescales. The dips can be caused by either the occultation of the central X-ray source by an optically thick structure, such as warping of the accretion disc, or from obscuration by a wind launched from the accretion disc, or both. This behaviour supports the idea that supersoft ULXs are viewed close to edge-on to the accretion disc., Comment: Accepted MNRAS version following minor comments. 8 pages, 6 figures

Most ULXs are believed to be powered by super-Eddington accreting neutron stars and, perhaps, black holes. Above the Eddington rate the disc is expected to thicken and to launch powerful winds through radiation pressure. Winds have been recently discovered in several ULXs. However, it is yet unclear whether the thickening of the disc or the wind variability causes the switch between the classical soft and supersoft states observed in some ULXs. In order to understand such phenomenology and the overall super-Eddington mechanism, we undertook a large (800 ks) observing campaign with XMM-Newton to study NGC 247 ULX-1, which shifts between a supersoft and classical soft ULX state. The new observations show unambiguous evidence of a wind in the form of emission and absorption lines from highly-ionised ionic species, with the latter indicating a mildly-relativistic outflow (-0.17c) in line with the detections in other ULXs. Strong dipping activity is observed in the lightcurve and primarily during the brightest observations, which is typical among soft ULXs, and indicates a close relationship between the accretion rate and the appearance of the dips. The latter is likely due to a thickening of the disc scale-height and the wind as shown by a progressively increasing blueshift in the spectral lines., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

THESEUS is a medium size space mission of the European Space Agency, currently under evaluation for a possible launch in 2032. Its main objectives are to investigate the early Universe through the observation of gamma-ray bursts and to study the gravitational waves electromagnetic counterparts and neutrino events. On the other hand, its instruments, which include a wide field of view X-ray (0.3-5 keV) telescope based on lobster-eye focusing optics and a gamma-ray spectrometer with imaging capabilities in the 2-150 keV range, are also ideal for carrying out unprecedented studies in time domain astrophysics. In addition, the presence onboard of a 70 cm near infrared telescope will allow simultaneous multi-wavelegth studies. HD49798 / RXJ0648.0-4418 is the only confirmed X-ray binary in which the mass donor is a hot subdwarf star of O spectral type and, most likely, it contains a massive white dwarf (1.28$\pm$0.05 M$_{\rm SUN}$) with a very fast spin period of 13.2 s. Here we report the results of new XMM-Newton pointings of this peculiar binary, carried out in 2018 and in 2020, together with a reanalysis of all the previous observations. The new data indicate that the compact object is still spinning-up at a steady rate of $(-2.17\pm0.01)\times10^{-15}$ s s$^{-1}$, consistent with its interpretation in terms of a young contracting white dwarf. Comparison of observations obtained at similar orbital phases, far from the ecplise, shows evidence for long term variability of the hard ($>$0.5 keV) spectral component at a level of $\sim$(70$\pm$20)\%, suggesting the presence of time-dependent inhomogeneities in the weak stellar wind of the HD49798 subdwarf. To investigate better the soft spectral component that dominates the X-ray flux from this system, we computed a theoretical model for the thermal emission expected from an atmosphere with element abundances and surface gravity appropriate for this massive white dwarf. This model gives a best fit with effective temperature of T$_{\rm eff}$=2.25$\times$10$^5$ K and an emitting area with radius of $\sim$1600 km, larger than that found with blackbody fits. This model also predicts a contribution of the pulsed emission from the white dwarf in the optical band significantly larger than previously thought and possibly relevant for optical variability studies of this system., Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRAS

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the new-generation ground-based observatory for $\gamma$-ray astronomy, provides unique capabilities to address significant open questions in astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. We study some of the salient areas of $\gamma$-ray cosmology that can be explored as part of the Key Science Projects of CTA, through simulated observations of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and of their relativistic jets. Observations of AGN with CTA will enable a measurement of $\gamma$-ray absorption on the extragalactic background light with a statistical uncertainty below 15% up to a redshift $z=2$ and to constrain or detect $\gamma$-ray halos up to intergalactic-magnetic-field strengths of at least 0.3pG. Extragalactic observations with CTA also show promising potential to probe physics beyond the Standard Model. The best limits on Lorentz invariance violation from $\gamma$-ray astronomy will be improved by a factor of at least two to three. CTA will also probe the parameter space in which axion-like particles could constitute a significant fraction, if not all, of dark matter. We provide an updated assessment of the power of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to search for thermally produced dark matter at the TeV scale, via the associated gamma-ray signal from pair-annihilating dark matter particles in the region around the Galactic centre. We find that CTA will open a new window of discovery potential, significantly extending the range of robustly testable models given a standard cuspy profile of the dark matter density distribution. Importantly, even for a cored profile, the projected sensitivity of CTA will be sufficient to probe various well-motivated models of thermally produced dark matter at the TeV scale. This is due to CTA's unprecedented sensitivity, angular and energy resolutions, and the planned observational strategy. The survey of the inner Galaxy will cover a much larger region than corresponding previous observational campaigns with imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. CTA will map with unprecedented precision the large-scale diffuse emission in high-energy gamma rays, constituting a background for dark matter searches for which we adopt state-of-the-art models based on current data. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date event reconstruction Monte Carlo tools developed by the CTA consortium, and pay special attention to quantifying the level of instrumental systematic uncertainties, as well as background template systematic errors, required to probe thermally produced dark matter at these energies. We report on the results of X-ray observations of 4XMM J111816.0-324910, a transient ultra-luminous X-ray source located in the galaxy NGC 3621. This system is characterised by a transient nature and marked variability with characteristic time-scale of ~3500 s, differently from other ULXs, which in the vast majority show limited intra-observation variability. Such a behaviour is very reminiscent of the so-called heartbeats sometimes observed in the Galactic black hole binary GRS 1915+105, where the variability time-scale is ~10-1000 s. We study the spectral and timing properties of this object and find that overall, once the differences in the variability time-scales are taken into account, they match quite closely those of both GRS 1915+105, and of a number of objects showing heartbeats in their light-curves, including a confirmed neutron star and a super-massive black hole powering an active galactic nucleus. We investigate the nature of the compact object in 4XMM J111816.0-324910 by searching for typical neutron star signatures and by attempting a mass estimate based on different methods and assumptions. The magnetar Swift ,J1818.0-1607 was discovered in March 2020 when Swift detected a 9 ms hard X-ray burst and a long-lived outburst. Prompt X-ray observations revealed a spin period of 1.36 s, soon confirmed by the discovery of radio pulsations. We report here on the analysis of the Swift burst and follow-up X-ray and radio observations. The burst average luminosity was $L_{\rm burst} \sim2\times 10^{39}$ erg/s (at 4.8 kpc). Simultaneous observations with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR three days after the burst provided a source spectrum well fit by an absorbed blackbody ($N_{\rm H} = (1.13\pm0.03) \times 10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ and $kT = 1.16\pm0.03$ keV) plus a power-law ($\Gamma=0.0\pm1.3$) in the 1-20 keV band, with a luminosity of $\sim$$8\times10^{34}$ erg/s, dominated by the blackbody emission. From our timing analysis, we derive a dipolar magnetic field $B \sim 7\times10^{14}$ G, spin-down luminosity $\dot{E}_{\rm rot} \sim 1.4\times10^{36}$ erg/s and characteristic age of 240 yr, the shortest currently known. Archival observations led to an upper limit on the quiescent luminosity $<$$5.5\times10^{33}$ erg/s, lower than the value expected from magnetar cooling models at the source characteristic age. A 1 hr radio observation with the Sardinia Radio Telescope taken about 1 week after the X-ray burst detected a number of strong and short radio pulses at 1.5 GHz, in addition to regular pulsed emission; they were emitted at an average rate 0.9 min$^{-1}$ and accounted for $\sim$50% of the total pulsed radio fluence. We conclude that Swift ,J1818.0-1607 is a peculiar magnetar belonging to the small, diverse group of young neutron stars with properties straddling those of rotationally and magnetically powered pulsars. ASTRI is a project aiming at the realization of a gamma-ray imaging Cherenkov telescope that observes the sky in the TeV band. Recently, the development of a mini-array (MA) of ASTRI telescopes has been funded by the Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica. The ASTRI Comprehensive Data Challenge (ACDC) project aims at optimizing the scientific exploitation and analysis techniques of the ASTRI MA, by performing a complete end-to-end simulation of a tentative scientific program, from the generation of suitable instrument response functions to the proposal, selection, analysis, and interpretation of the simulated data. We assumed that the MA will comprise nine ASTRI telescopes arranged in a (almost) square geometry (mean distance between telescopes of ~250m). We simulated three years of observations, adopting a realistic pointing plan that takes into account, for each field, visibility constraints for an assumed site in Paranal (Chile) and observational time slots in dark sky conditions. We simulated the observations of nineteen Galactic and extragalactic fields selected for their scientific interest, including several classes of objects (such as pulsar wind nebulae, supernova remnants, gamma-ray binaries etc), for a total of 81 point-like and extended sources. Here we present an overview of the ACDC project, providing details on the different software packages needed to carry out the simulated three-years operation of the ASTRI MA. We discuss the results of a systematic analysis applied on the whole simulated data, by making use of prototype science tools widely adopted by the TeV astronomical community. Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are a class of accreting compact objects with X-ray luminosities above 1e39 erg/s. The ULX population counts several hundreds objects but only a minor fraction is well studied. Here we present a detailed analysis of all ULXs hosted in the galaxy NGC 7456. It was observed in X-rays only once in the past (in 2005) by XMM-Newton, but the observation was short and strongly affected by high background. In 2018, we obtained a new, deeper (~90 ks) XMM-Newton observation that allowed us to perform a detailed characterization of the ULXs hosted in the galaxy. ULX-1 and ULX-2, the two brightest objects (Lx~(6-10)e39 erg/s), have spectra that can be described by a two-thermal component model as often found in ULXs. ULX-1 shows also one order of magnitude in flux variability on short-term timescales (hundreds to thousand ks). The other sources (ULX-3 and ULX-4) show flux changes of at least an order of magnitude, and these objects may be candidate transient ULXs although longer X-ray monitoring or further studies are required to ascribe them to the ULX population. In addition, we found a previously undetected source that might be a new candidate ULX (labelled as ULX-5) with a luminosity of ~1e39 erg/s and hard power-law spectral shape, whose nature is still unclear and for which a background Active Galactic Nucleus cannot be excluded. We discuss the properties of all the ULXs in NGC 7456 within the framework of super-Eddington accretion onto stellar mass compact objects. Hot subdwarfs are helium burning objects in late stages of their evolution. These stars can develop winds driven by light absorption in the lines of heavier elements. The wind strength depends on chemical composition which can significantly vary from star to star. We aim to understand the influence of metallicity on the strength of the winds of the hot hydrogen-rich subdwarfs HD 49798 and BD+18$^\circ\,$2647. We used UV and optical spectra to derive stellar parameters and abundances. For derived stellar parameters, we predicted wind structure (including mass-loss rates and terminal velocities) with our METUJE code. We derived effective temperature $T_\text{eff}=45\,900\,$K and mass $M=1.46\,M_\odot$ for HD 49798 and $T_\text{eff}=73\,000\,$K and $M=0.38\,M_\odot$ for BD+18$^\circ\,$2647. The abundances can be interpreted as a result of interplay between stellar evolution and diffusion. HD 49798 has a strong wind that does not allow for chemical separation and consequently it shows solar chemical composition modified by hydrogen burning. On the other hand, we did not find any wind in BD+18$^\circ\,$2647 and its abundances are therefore most likely affected by radiative diffusion. Accurate abundances do not lead to a significant modification of wind mass-loss rate for HD 49798, because the increase of the contribution of Fe and Ni to the radiative force is compensated by the decrease of the force due to other elements. The resulting wind mass-loss rate $\dot M=2.1\times10^{-9}\,M_\odot\,\text{yr}^{-1}$ predicts an X-ray light curve during the eclipse which closely agrees with observations. On the other hand, the absence of the wind in BD+18$^\circ\,$2647 for accurate abundances is a result of its peculiar chemical composition. Wind models with accurate abundances provide more reliable wind parameters, but the influence of abundances on the wind parameters is limited in many cases., Comment: 11 pages, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We report on the first detection of very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from the Crab Nebula by a Cherenkov telescope in dual-mirror Schwarzschild-Couder (SC) configuration. The result has been achieved by means of the 4 m size ASTRI-Horn telescope, operated on Mt. Etna (Italy) and developed in the context of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory preparatory phase. The dual-mirror SC design is aplanatic and characterized by a small plate scale, allowing us to implement large field of view cameras with small-size pixel sensors and a high compactness. The curved focal plane of the ASTRI camera is covered by silicon photo-multipliers (SiPMs), managed by an unconventional front-end electronics based on a customized peak-sensing detector mode. The system includes internal and external calibration systems, hardware and software for control and acquisition, and the complete data archiving and processing chain. The observations of the Crab Nebula were carried out in December 2018, during the telescope verification phase, for a total observation time (after data selection) of 24.4 h, equally divided into on- and off-axis source exposure. The camera system was still under commissioning and its functionality was not yet completely exploited. Furthermore, due to recent eruptions of the Etna Volcano, the mirror reflection efficiency was reduced. Nevertheless, the observations led to the detection of the source with a statistical significance of 5.4 sigma above an energy threshold of ~3 TeV. This result provides an important step towards the use of dual-mirror systems in Cherenkov gamma-ray astronomy. We discovered 2.8 s pulsations in the X-ray emission of the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) M51 ULX-7 within the UNSEeN project, which was designed to hunt for new pulsating ULXs (PULXs) with XMM-Newton. The pulse shape is sinusoidal and large variations of its amplitude were observed even within single exposures (pulsed fraction from less than 5% to 20%). M51 ULX-7 is a variable source, generally observed at an X-ray luminosity between $10^{39}$ and $10^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$, located in the outskirts of the spiral galaxy M51a at a distance of 8.6 Mpc. According to our analysis, the X-ray pulsar orbits in a 2-d binary with a projected semi-major axis $a_\mathrm{X} \sin i \simeq$ 28 lt-s. For a neutron star (NS) of 1.4 $M_{\odot}$, this implies a lower limit on the companion mass of 8 $M_{\odot}$, placing the system hosting M51 ULX-7 in the high-mass X-ray binary class. The barycentric pulse period decreased by $\simeq$0.4 ms in the 31 d spanned by our May -- June 2018 observations, corresponding to a spin-up rate $\dot{P} \simeq -1.5\times10^{-10}\text{s s}^{-1}$. In an archival 2005 XMM-Newton exposure, we measured a spin period of $\sim$3.3 s, indicating a secular spin-up of $\dot{P}_{\mathrm{sec}}\simeq -10^{-9}\text{ s s}^{-1}$, a value in the range of other known PULXs. Our findings suggest that the system consists of an OB giant and a moderately magnetic (dipole field component in the range $10^{12}$ G $\lesssim B_{\mathrm{dip}}\lesssim 10^{13}$G) accreting NS with weakly beamed emission ($1/12\lesssim b\lesssim1/4$)., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

After two major outbursts in 2006 and 2011, on 2017 May 16 the magnetar CXOU J164710.2-455216, hosted within the massive star cluster Westerlund I, emitted a short (20 ms) burst, which marked the onset of a new active phase. We started a long-term monitoring campaign with Swift (45 observations), Chandra (5 observations) and NuSTAR (4 observations) from the activation until 2018 April. During the campaign, Swift BAT registered the occurrence of multiple bursts, accompanied by two other enhancements of the X-ray persistent flux. The long time span covered by our observations allowed us to study the spectral as well as the timing evolution of the source. After 11 months since the 2017 May outburst onset, the observed flux was about 15 times higher than its historical minimum level and a factor of 3 higher than the level reached after the 2006 outburst. This suggests that the crust has not fully relaxed to the quiescent level, or that the source quiescent level has changed following the multiple outburst activities in the past 10 years or so. This is another case of multiple outbursts from the same source on a yearly time scale, a somehow recently discovered behaviour in magnetars., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 14 pages, 7 figures

We report the results provided by the XMM-Newton observation of the X-ray binary pulsar SXP59.0 during its most recent outburst in April 2017. The source was detected at $f_{\rm X}$(0.2-12 keV) = 8$\times 10^{-11}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, one of its highest flux levels reported to date. The measured pulse period was $P_{\rm spin}$ = 58.949(1) s, very similar to the periods measured in most of the previous observations. The pulsed emission was clearly detected over the whole energy range between 0.2 and 12 keV, but the pulse profile is energy dependent and the pulsed fraction increases as the energy increases. Although the time-averaged EPIC spectrum is dominated by a power-law component (with photon index $\Gamma = 0.76 \pm 0.01$), the data show an evident soft excess, which can be described with the sum of a black-body and a hot thermal plasma component (with temperatures $kT_{\rm BB} = 171^{+11}_{-14}$ eV and $kT_{\rm APEC} = 1.09^{+0.16}_{-0.09}$ keV, respectively). Moreover, the EPIC and RGS spectra show narrow emission lines due to N, O, Ne, Mg, and Fe. The phase-resolved spectral analysis of the EPIC data shows that the flux of the black-body component varies with the pulse phase, while the plasma component is almost constant. We show that the black-body component can be attributed to the reprocessing of the primary emission by the optically thick material at the inner edge of the accretion disc, while the hot plasma component is due to a diffuse gas far from the accretion region and the narrow emission lines of the RGS spectrum are most probably due to photoionized matter around the accreting source., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables. We discuss the spectral and timing properties of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SWIFT J1756.9-2508 observed by XMM-Newton, NICER and NuSTAR during the X-ray outburst occurred in April 2018. The spectral properties of the source are consistent with a hard state dominated at high energies by a non-thermal power-law component with a cut-off at ~70 keV. No evidence of iron emission lines or reflection humps has been found. From the coherent timing analysis of the pulse profiles, we derived an updated set of orbital ephemerides. Combining the parameters measured from the three outbursts shown by the source in the last ~11 years, we investigated the secular evolution of the spin frequency and the orbital period. We estimated a neutron magnetic field of 3.1E+8 G < B_pc< 4.5E+8 G and measured an orbital period derivative of -4.1E-12 s/s < P_dot_orb < 7.1E-12 s/s. We also studied the energy dependence of the pulse profile by characterising the behaviour of the pulse fractional amplitude in the energy range 0.3-80 keV. These results are compared with those obtained from the previous outbursts of SWIFT J1756.9-2508 and other previously known accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables. NGC 925 ULX-1 and ULX-2 are two ultraluminous X-ray sources in the galaxy NGC 925, at a distance of 8.5 Mpc. For the first time, we analyzed high quality, simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR data of both sources. Although at a first glance ULX-1 resembles an intermediate mass black hole candidate (IMBH) because of its high X-ray luminosity ($(2$$-$$4)\times10^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$) and its spectral/temporal features, a closer inspection shows that its properties are more similar to those of a typical super-Eddington accreting stellar black hole and we classify it as a `broadened disc' ultraluminous X-ray source. Based on the physical interpretation of this spectral state, we suggest that ULX-1 is seen at small inclination angles, possibly through the evacuated cone of a powerful wind originating in the accretion disc. The spectral classification of ULX-2 is less certain, but we disfavour an IMBH accreting at sub-Eddington rates as none of its spectral/temporal properties can be associated to either the soft or hard state of Galactic accreting black hole binaries., Comment: Accepted on MNRAS with very minor comments, 7 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

SAX J1748.9-2021 is an accreting X-ray millisecond pulsar observed in outburst five times since its discovery in 1998. In early October 2017, the source started its sixth outburst, which lasted only ~13 days, significantly shorter than the typical 30 days duration of the previous outbursts. It reached a 0.3-70 keV unabsorbed peak luminosity of $\sim3\times10^{36}$ erg/s. This is the weakest outburst ever reported for this source to date. We analyzed almost simultaneous XMM-Newton, NuSTAR and INTEGRAL observations taken during the decaying phase of its 2017 outburst. We found that the spectral properties of SAX J1748.9-2021 are consistent with an absorbed Comptonization plus a blackbody component. The former, characterized by an electron temperature of ~20 keV, a photon index of ~1.6-1.7 keV and seed photon temperature of 0.44 keV, can be associated to a hot corona or the accretion column, while the latter is more likely originating from the neutron star surface (kT$_{bb}\sim0.6$ keV, R$_{bb}\sim2.5$ km). These findings suggest that SAX J1748.9-2021 was observed in a $hard$ spectral state, as it is typically the case for accreting millisecond pulsars in outburst., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 7 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

We report on the serendipitous discovery of a new transient in NGC 5907, at a peak luminosity of 6.4x10^{39} erg/s. The source was undetected in previous 2012 Chandra observations with a 3 sigma upper limit on the luminosity of 1.5x10^{38} erg/s, implying a flux increase of a factor of >35. We analyzed three recent 60ks/50ks Chandra and 50ks XMM-Newton observations, as well as all the available Swift observations performed between August 2017/March 2018. Until the first half of October 2017, Swift observations do not show any emission from the source. The transient entered the ULX regime in less than two weeks and its outburst was still on-going at the end of February 2018. The 0.3-10 keV spectrum is consistent with a single multicolour blackbody disc (kT~1.5 keV). The source might be a ~30 solar mass black hole accreting at the Eddington limit. However, although we did not find evidence of pulsations, we cannot rule-out the possibility that this ULX hosts an accreting neutron star., Comment: Accepted on MNRAS, 5 pages, 2 figure, 1 table

We report on the results of the $XMM-Newton$ observation of IGR J01572-7259 during its most recent outburst in 2016 May, the first since 2008. The source reached a flux $f \sim 10^{-10}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, which allowed us to perform a detailed analysis of its timing and spectral properties. We obtained a pulse period $P_{\rm spin}$ = 11.58208(2) s. The pulse profile is double peaked and strongly energy dependent, as the second peak is prominent only at low energies and the pulsed fraction increases with energy. The main spectral component is a power-law model, but at low energies we also detected a soft thermal component, which can be described with either a blackbody or a hot plasma model. Both the EPIC and RGS spectra show several emission lines, which can be identified with the transition lines of ionized N, O, Ne, and Fe and cannot be described with a thermal emission model. The phase-resolved spectral analysis showed that the flux of both the soft excess and the emission lines vary with the pulse phase: the soft excess disappears in the first pulse and becomes significant only in the second, where also the Fe line is stronger. This variability is difficult to explain with emission from a hot plasma, while the reprocessing of the primary X-ray emission at the inner edge of the accretion disk provides a realiable scenario. On the other hand, the narrow emission lines can be due to the presence of photoionized matter around the accreting source., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables. We report on the X-ray dust-scattering features observed around the afterglow of the gamma ray burst GRB 160623A. With an XMM-Newton observation carried out ~2 days after the burst, we found evidence of at least six rings, with angular size expanding between ~2 and 9 arcmin, as expected for X-ray scattering of the prompt GRB emission by dust clouds in our Galaxy. From the expansion rate of the rings, we measured the distances of the dust layers with extraordinary precision: 528.1 +\- 1.2 pc, 679.2 +\- 1.9 pc, 789.0 +\- 2.8 pc, 952 +\- 5 pc, 1539 +\- 20 pc and 5079 +\- 64 pc. A spectral analysis of the ring spectra, based on an appropriate dust-scattering model (BARE-GR-B from Zubko et al. 2004}) and the estimated burst fluence, allowed us to derive the column density of the individual dust layers, which are in the range 7x10^20-1.5x10^22 cm^-2. The farthest dust-layer (i.e. the one responsible for the smallest ring) is also the one with the lowest column density and it is possibly very extended, indicating a diffuse dust region. The properties derived for the six dust-layers (distance, thickness, and optical depth) are generally in good agreement with independent information on the reddening along this line of sight and on the distribution of molecular and atomic gas., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, 1 table; accepted for publication in MNRAS

XB 1254-690 is a dipping low mass X-ray binary system hosting a neutron star and showing type I X-ray bursts. We aim at obtaining more accurate orbital ephemeris and at constraining the orbital period derivative of the system for the first time. In addition, we want to better constrain the distance to the source in order to locate the system in a well defined evolutive scenario. We apply for the first time an orbital timing technique to XB 1254-690, using the arrival times of the dips present in the light curves that have been collected during 26 years of X-ray pointed observations performed from different space missions. We estimate the dip arrival times using a statistical method that weights the count-rate inside the dip with respect to the level of the persistent emission outside the dip. We fit the obtained delays as a function of the orbital cycles both with a linear and a quadratic function. We infer the orbital ephemeris of XB 1254-690 improving the accuracy of the orbital period with respect to previous estimates. We infer a mass of M$_{2}=0.42\pm 0.04$ M$_{\odot}$ for the donor star, in agreement with the estimations already present in literature, assuming that the star is in thermal equilibrium while it transfers part of its mass via the inner Lagrangian point, and assuming a neutron star mass of 1.4 M$_{\odot}$. Using these assumptions, we also constrain the distance to the source, finding a value of 7.6$\pm 0.8$ kpc. We present a timing analysis of the 2015 outburst of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658, using non-simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuStar observations. We estimate the pulsar spin frequency and update the system orbital solution. Combining the average spin frequency from the previous observed, we confirm the long-term spin down at an average rate $\dot{\nu}_{\text{SD}}=1.5(2)\times 10^{-15}$ Hz s$^{-1}$. We also discuss possible corrections to the spin down rate accounting for mass accretion onto the compact object when the system is X-ray active. Finally, combining the updated ephemerides with those of the previous outbursts, we find a long-term orbital evolution compatible with a binary expansion at a mean rate $\dot{P}_{orb}=3.6(4)\times 10^{-12}$ s s$^{-1}$, in agreement with previously reported values. This fast evolution is incompatible with an evolution driven by angular momentum losses caused by gravitational radiation under the hypothesis of conservative mass transfer. We discuss the observed orbital expansion in terms of non-conservative mass transfer and gravitational quadrupole coupling mechanism. We find that the latter can explain, under certain conditions, small fluctuations (of the order of few seconds) of the orbital period around a global parabolic trend. At the same time, a non-conservative mass transfer is required to explain the observed fast orbital evolution, which likely reflects ejection of a large fraction of mass from the inner Lagrangian point caused by the irradiation of the donor by the magneto-dipole rotator during quiescence (radio-ejection model). This strong outflow may power tidal dissipation in the companion star and be responsible of the gravitational quadrupole change oscillations., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures. We present the spectral and timing analysis of the X-ray pulsar GRO J1744-28 during its 2014 outburst using data collected with the X-ray satellites Swift, INTEGRAL, Chandra, and XMM-Newton. We derived, by phase-connected timing analysis of the observed pulses, an updated set of the source ephemeris. We were also able to investigate the spin-up of the X-ray pulsar as a consequence of the accretion torque during the outburst. Relating the spin-up rate and the mass accretion rate as $\dot{\nu}\propto\dot{M}^{\beta}$, we fitted the pulse phase delays obtaining a value of $\beta=0.96(3)$. Combining the results from the source spin-up frequency derivative and the flux estimation, we constrained the source distance to be between 3.4-4.1 kpc, assuming a disc viscous parameter $\alpha$ to be in the range 0.1-1. Finally, we investigated the presence of a possible spin-down torque by adding a quadratic component to the pulse phase delay model. The marginal statistical improvement of the updated model does not allow us to firmly confirm the presence of this component., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are a population of extragalactic objects whose luminosity exceeds the Eddington limit for a 10 Msun black hole (BH). Their properties have been widely interpreted in terms of accreting stellar-mass or intermediate-mass BHs. However at least three neutron stars (NSs) have been recently identified in ULXs through the discovery of periodic pulsations. Motivated by these findings we studied the spectral properties of a sample of bright ULXs using a simple continuum model which was extensively used to fit the X-ray spectra of accreting magnetic NSs in the Galaxy. We found that such a model, consisting of a power-law with a high-energy exponential cut-off, fits very well most of the ULX spectra analyzed here, at a level comparable to that of models involving an accreting BH. On these grounds alone we suggest that other non-pulsating ULXs may host NSs. We found also that above 2 keV the spectrum of known pulsating ULXs is harder than that of the majority of the other ULXs of the sample, with only IC 342 X-1 and Ho IX X-1 displaying spectra of comparable hardness. We report on the spectral and timing properties of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar IGR J00291+5934 observed by XMM-Newton and NuSTAR during its 2015 outburst. The source is in a hard state dominated at high energies by a comptonization of soft photons ($\sim0.9$ keV) by an electron population with kT$_e\sim30$ keV, and at lower energies by a blackbody component with kT$\sim0.5$ keV. A moderately broad, neutral Fe emission line and four narrow absorption lines are also found. By investigating the pulse phase evolution, we derived the best-fitting orbital solution for the 2015 outburst. Comparing the updated ephemeris with those of the previous outbursts, we set a $3\sigma$ confidence level interval $-6.6\times 10^{-13}$ s/s $< \dot{P}_{orb} < 6.5 \times 10^{-13}$ s/s on the orbital period derivative. Moreover, we investigated the pulse profile dependence on energy finding a peculiar behaviour of the pulse fractional amplitude and lags as a function of energy. We performed a phase-resolved spectroscopy showing that the blackbody component tracks remarkably well the pulse-profile, indicating that this component resides at the neutron star surface (hot-spot)., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures. In this paper, we report on the analysis of the peculiar X-ray variability displayed by the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar IGR J00291+5934 in a 80 ks-long joint NuSTAR and XMM-Newton observation performed during the source outburst in 2015. The light curve of the source was characterized by a flaring-like behavior, with typical rise and decay time scales of ~120 s. The flares are accompanied by a remarkable spectral variability, with the X-ray emission being generally softer at the peak of the flares. A strong quasi periodic oscillation (QPO) is detected at ~8 mHz in the power spectrum of the source and clearly associated with the flaring-like behavior. This feature has the strongest power at soft X-rays (<3 keV). We carried out a dedicated hardness-ratio resolved spectral analysis and a QPO phase-resolved spectral analysis, together with an in-depth study of the source timing properties, to investigate the origin of this behavior. We suggest that the unusual variability of IGR J00291+5934 observed by XMM-Newton and NuSTAR could be produced by an heartbeat-like mechanism, similar to that operating in black-hole X-ray binaries. The possibility that this variability, and the associated QPO, are triggered by phases of quasi-stable nuclear burning, as suggested in the literature for a number of other neutron star binaries displaying a similar behavior, cannot be solidly tested in the case of IGR J00291+5934 due to the paucity of type-I X-ray bursts observed from this source., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS on 23 Sept 2016. The source 4U 1702-429 (Ara X-1) is a low-mass X-ray binary system hosting a neutron star. Albeit the source is quite bright ( $\sim10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$) its broadband spectrum has never been studied. Neither dips nor eclipses have been observed in the light curve suggesting that its inclination angle is smaller than 60$^{\circ}$.We analysed the broadband spectrum of 4U 1702-429 in the 0.3-60 keV energy range, using XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL data, to constrain its Compton reflection component if it is present. After excluding the three time intervals in which three type-I X-ray bursts occurred, we fitted the joint XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL spectra obtained from simultaneous observations. A broad emission line at 6.7 keV and two absorption edges at 0.87 and 8.82 keV were detected. We found that a self-consistent reflection model fits the 0.3-60 keV spectrum well. The broadband continuum is composed of an emission component originating from the inner region of the accretion disc, a Comptonised direct emission coming from a corona with an electron temperature of $2.63 \pm 0.06$ keV and an optical depth $\tau=13.6 \pm 0.2$, and, finally, a reflection component. The best-fit indicates that the broad emission line and the absorption edge at 8.82 keV, both associated with the presence of \ion{Fe}{xxv} ions, are produced by reflection in the region above the disc with a ionisation parameter of $Log(\xi) \simeq 2.7$. We have inferred that the inner radius, where the broad emission line originates, is $64^{+52}_{-15}$ km, and the inner radius of the accretion disc is $39^{+6}_{-8}$ km. We report on the timing analysis of the 2015 outburst of the intermittent accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1748.9-2021 observed on March 4 by the X-ray satellite XMM-Newton. By phase-connecting the time of arrivals of the observed pulses, we derived the best-fit orbital solution for the 2015 outburst. We investigated the energy pulse profile dependence finding that the pulse fractional amplitude increases with energy while no significant time lags are detected. Moreover, we investigated the previous outbursts from this source, finding previously undetected pulsations in some intervals during the 2010 outburst of the source. Comparing the updated set of orbital parameters, in particular the value of the time of passage from the ascending node, with the orbital solutions reported from the previous outbursts, we estimated for the first time the orbital period derivative corresponding with $\dot{P}_{orb}=(1.1\pm0.3)\times 10^{-10}$ s/s. We note that this value is significant at 3.5 sigma confidence level, because of significant fluctuations with respect to the parabolic trend and more observations are needed in order to confirm the finding. Assuming the reliability of the result, we suggest that the large value of the orbital-period derivative can be explained as a result of an highly non-conservative mass transfer driven by emission of gravitational waves, which implies the ejection of matter from a region close to the inner Lagrangian point. A sub-set of the brightest ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs), with X-ray luminosities well above $10^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$, typically have energy spectra which can be well described as hard power-laws, and short-term variability in excess of $\sim10\%$. This combination of properties suggests that these ULXs may be some of the best candidates to host intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs), which would be accreting at sub-Eddington rates in the hard state seen in Galactic X-ray binaries. In this work, we present a temporal and spectral analysis of all of the available XMM-Newton data from one such ULX, the previously poorly studied 2XMM J143242.1$-$440939, located in NGC 5643. We report that its high quality EPIC spectra can be better described by a broad, thermal component, such as an advection dominated disc or an optically thick Comptonising corona. In addition, we find a hint of a marginal change in the short-term variability which does not appear to be clearly related to the source unabsorbed luminosity. We discuss the implications of these results, excluding the possibility that the source may be host an IMBH in a low state, and favouring an interpretation in terms of super-Eddington accretion on to a black hole of stellar origin. 4U 1323-619 is a low mass X-ray binary system that shows type I X-ray bursts and dips. The most accurate estimation of the orbital period is 2.941923(36) hrs and a distance from the source that is lower than 11 kpc has been proposed. We aim to obtain the orbital ephemeris, the orbital period of the system, as well as its derivative to compare the observed luminosity with that predicted by the theory of secular evolution. We took the advantage of about 26 years of X-ray data and grouped the selected observations when close in time. We folded the light curves and used the timing technique, obtaining 12 dip arrival times. We fit the delays of the dip arrival times both with a linear and a quadratic function. We locate 4U 1323-619 within a circular area centred at RA (J2000)= 201.6543\degree and DEC (J2000)= -62.1358\degree with an associated error of 0.0002\degree, and confirm the detection of the IR counterpart already discussed in literature. We estimate an orbital period of P=2.9419156(6) hrs compatible with the estimations that are present in the literature, but with an accuracy ten times higher. We also obtain a constraint on the orbital period derivative for the first time, estimating $\dot{P}=(8\pm 13)\times 10^{-12}$ s/s. Assuming that the companion star is in thermal equilibrium in the lower main sequence, and is a neutron star of 1.4 M$_{\odot}$, we infer a mass of 0.28$\pm$0.03 M$_{\odot}$ for the companion star. Assuming a distance of 10 kpc, we obtained a luminosity of (4.3$\pm$0.5)$\times 10^{36}$ erg s$^{-1}$, which is not in agreement with what is predicted by the theory of secular evolution. Using a 3D extinction map of the K$_{s}$ radiation in our Galaxy, we obtain a distance of 4.2$^{+0.8}_{-0.7}$ kpc at 68\% confidence level. In this paper, we report on the available X-ray data collected by INTEGRAL, Swift, and XMM-Newton during the first outburst of the INTEGRAL transient IGR J17451-3022, discovered in 2014 August. The monitoring observations provided by the JEM-X instruments on-board INTEGRAL and the Swift/XRT showed that the event lasted for about 9 months and that the emission of the source remained soft for the entire period. The source emission is dominated by a thermal component (kT~1.2 keV), most likely produced by an accretion disk. The XMM-Newton observation carried out during the outburst revealed the presence of multiple absorption features in the soft X-ray emission that could be associated to the presence of an ionized absorber lying above the accretion disk, as observed in many high-inclination low mass X-ray binaries. The XMM-Newton data also revealed the presence of partial and rectangular X-ray eclipses (lasting about 820 s), together with dips. The latter can be associated with increases in the overall absorption column density in the direction of the source. The detection of two consecutive X-ray eclipses in the XMM-Newton data allowed us to estimate the source orbital period at 22620.5(-1.8,+2.0) s (1{\sigma} c.l.)., Comment: Accepted for publication on A&A

We have analyzed XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of the transient magnetar XTE J1810-197, spanning more than 11 years, from the initial phases of the 2003 outburst to the current quiescent level. We investigated the evolution of the pulsar spin period and we found evidence for two distinct regimes: during the outburst decay, the spin derivative (nu_dot) was highly variable in the range -(2-4.5)x10^-13 Hz/s, while during quiescence the spin-down rate was more stable at an average value of -1x10^{-13} Hz/s. Only during ~3000 days (from MJD 54165 to MJD 56908) in the quiescent stage, it was possible to find a phase-connected timing solution, with nu_dot = -4.9x10^{-14} Hz/s, and a positive second frequency derivative, nu_dotdot = 1.8x10^{-22} Hz/s. These results are in agreement with the behavior expected if the outburst of XTE J1810-197 was due to a strong magnetospheric twist., Comment: Final published version with erratum; 7 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables

We report on the results of Swift and XMM-Newton observations of SMC X-2 during its last outburst in 2015 October, the first one since 2000. The source reached a very high luminosity ($L \sim 10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$), which allowed us to perform a detailed analysis of its timing and spectral properties. We obtained a pulse period $P_{\rm spin}$ = 2.372267(5) s and a characterization of the pulse profile also at low energies. The main spectral component is a hard ($\Gamma \simeq 0$) power-law model with an exponential cut-off, but at low energies we detected also a soft (with kT $\simeq$ 0.15 keV) thermal component. Several emission lines can be observed at various energies. The identification of these features with the transition lines of highly ionized N, O, Ne, Si, and Fe suggests the presence of photoionized matter around the accreting source., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables.
