International audience; Systems based on renewable energies coupled to an hydrogen storage are original solutions for the electrical supplying of sites not very or not at all electrified. The H2/O2 battery, association of an electrolyzer, a fuel cell and gas tanks, could be an interesting solution to satisfy long periods of autonomy (typically seasonal storage). But its implementation is not so easy and the operation particularities due to involved electrochemical processes forced us to associate a secondary storage (typically a lead-acid battery) to this H2/O2 battery. This paper presents the reflections about electrical architectures achieved in the framework of the PEPITE French project whose objective was to supply a stand-alone technical site (meteorological pylon) from a photovoltaic generator and a H2/O2 battery.

24th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference, 21-25 September 2009, Hamburg, Germany; 4318-4320, PEPITE (Study And Experimentation of Intermittent Energy Management using Electrochemical Technologies) is a project endorsed by the French PAN-H research program (action plan on hydrogen and fuel cell) supported by the ANR (French Research National Agency). This project concerns, among other tasks, a demonstration of the electricity supply of a weather station with help of a PV/ H2 hybrid system in Cadarache (Aix in Provence, 43°3152N 5°2714E, France). This paper describes the optimization method of the whole system sizing, considering a predefined load profile, via observing his ability to meet the specifications taking into account the appropriate constraints of the site. This approach has been made via a new numerical sizing code named ORIENTE (Optimization of Renewable Intermittent Energies with hydrogeN for auTonomous Electrification) under Matlab software.. The system is composed by a renewable source of energy (solar radiation with a PV array), an energy storage system (H2 chain and battery pack) and converters which are associated to them. This article presents optimal sizing curves for the PV/ H2 hybrid system in relation to the predefined load and the energy system balance for LLP = 0 (Loss of Load Probability). These results, determining the size of each subsystem (P ,V ,V ,P ,etc.) PV H2 O2 FC will allow to build the best energy flows regulation mode.

Abstract: This paper concerns the impacts of the meteorological data, the choice of the load profile, and the time simulation (1–11 years) on the energy flows and on the H2/O2/H2O storage sizing in a photovoltaic/fuel cell/electrolyzer hybrid system (PEPITE project). The simulations were computed with the ORIENTE software. 4 load profiles have been investigated (3 diurnal and one nocturnal) with an identical daily consumption (26 kWh). According to load profiles, the gap observed between the most favorable and the most disadvantageous years induces H2 storage variations rates between 45.5% and 55.3%. Furthermore, if we compare the most penalizing meteorological year with the sizing when we simulate several successive years, we also obtain variation rates (ration between the standard deviation and the corresponding averaged value) ranges from 24.4 to 37.9% for the 3 diurnal profiles. The nocturnal profile presents specific results because it is unsustainable. The main conclusion of this work is the great importance to consider several consecutive years of tilted irradiation data, 7 in our case, to size the H2/O2/H2O storages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
To accurately determine the spread of any pathogen, including plant viruses, a quick, sensitive, cost-effective, point-of-care diagnostic assay is necessary. Wheat spindle streak mosaic virus (WSSMV) is a Bymovirus, transmitted by the plasmodiophorid Polymyxa graminis Led, which causes yellow mosaic and reduces the grain yield in wheat. Currently, detection protocols for WSSMV use ELISA or more sensitive PCR-based approaches requiring specialized laboratory and personnel. A protocol for reverse transcription loop mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) has been developed and optimized for the rapid detection of viruses using crude extracts from wheat leaves. The protocol was specific for WSSMV detection, while no reaction was observed with SBCMV or SBWMV, the non-target viruses transmitted by the same vector. The RT-LAMP assay was shown to be as sensitive as the one-step WSSMV specific RT-PCR. The RT-LAMP assay can be performed under field conditions using a portable instrument, and can help the actual spread of WSSMV, an aspect of this virus not yet well understood, to be explored., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing interests., (Copyright: © 2024 Marra et al. 20. NMR and pulsed field gradient NMR approach of water sorption properties in Nafion at low temperature.

- Abstract
The water uptake and the water self-diffusion coefficient were measured in Nafion membranes at subzero temperatures. NMR spectroscopy was used to precisely quantify the actual concentration of water in membranes as a function of the temperature and their hydration rates at room temperature. We find that below 273 K the water concentration decreases with temperature to reach, at around 220 K, a limit value independent of the initial concentration. This regime is observed if the concentration at room temperature is higher than 10%. Below this concentration no membrane deswelling was observed. The water self-diffusion coefficient, measured by pulsed field gradient NMR in function of the temperature, is determined by the actual concentration C(T) whatever the concentration at room temperature. The concentration variation is attributed to a decrease in the relative humidity RH(T) of the water vapor surrounding the membrane induced by the simultaneous presence of supercooled water inside the membrane and ice outside the membrane.

- Abstract
The mechanism of nicotinic acid action in smooth muscle was studied by testing the drug in rat stomach fundus and descending colon using either the superfusion or perfusion technique. In the rat stomach strips nicotinic acid (or Na-nicotinate) induces concentration-dependent contractions that are drastically antagonized by indomethacin but not by the other inhibitors tested (scopolamine, phenoxybenzamine, propranolol, methysergide, pyrilamine, imidazole, anacardic acid). Reduced glutathione, on the contrary, clearly potentiates the contractile effect of nicotinic acid in the tissue. The response of the rat stomach strips to different prostanoids (PGE1, PGE2 alpha, PGF2 alpha, and PGI2) shows that only PGE2 (at a very low concentration: 14 nM) induces muscle contraction similar to that evoked by Na-nicotinate (34.4 nM). In segments of rat descending colon Na-nicotinate induces concentration-dependent contractions that are abolished by scopolamine, by hemicholinium-3 or incubation at low temperature (20 degrees C). These results provide evidence that nicotinic acid influences gastrointestinal smooth muscle by indirect mechanisms, i.e. by release of endogenous autacoids, namely prostaglandins in the stomach fundus and cholinergic transmitter in the descending colon.
