Gaseous and liquid xenon particle detectors are being used in a number of applications including dark matter search and neutrino-less double beta decay experiments. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is often used in these detectors both as electrical insulator and as a light reflector to improve the efficiency of detection of scintillation photons. However, xenon emits in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) wavelength region (λ≃175 nm) where the reflecting properties of PTFE are not sufficiently known. In this work, we report on measurements of PTFE reflectance, including its angular distribution, for the xenon scintillation light. Various samples of PTFE, manufactured by different processes (extruded, expanded, skived, and pressed) have been studied. The data were interpreted with a physical model comprising both specular and diffuse reflections. The reflectance obtained for these samples ranges from about 47% to 66% for VUV light. Other fluoropolymers, namely, ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE), fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP), and perfluoro-alkoxyalkane (PFA) were also measured. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the results of the CPLEAR experiment on CP-, T-, and CPT-symmetries in the neutral kaon system. CP-violation parameters are given for the K-0, (K) over bar(0) --> 2 pi, 3 pi decay channels. For the first time, T-violation is measured by a direct method using semileptonic decays. The CPT symmetry is tested through the parameters Im(delta) with a precision of 10(-5) and Re(delta) with a precision of a few 10(-4). With these two measurements, the difference in mass and width of K-0 and (K) over bar(0) are bound to within 10(-18) GeV. In the limit of CPT invariance in the neutral kaon decays, the K-0 and (K) over bar(0) masses are equal within 10(-19) GeV. Nuclear Physics A

ZEPLIN II is a two-phase xenon detector designed to detect dark matter in the form of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). Following the first 31-day underground run in Boidby Mine, UK, the collaboration published dark matter Umits in January 2007; the first such limits using two-phase xenon technology. We outline the key detector design, performance and residts here. © 2009 American Institute of Physics.

- Abstract
We present the first measurements of the muon-induced neutron flux at the Boulby Underground Laboratory. The experiment was carried out with an 0.73 tonne liquid scintillator that also served as an anticoincidence system for the ZEPLIN-II direct dark matter search. The experimental method exploited the delayed coincidences between high-energy muon signals and gamma-rays from radiative neutron capture on hydrogen or other elements. The muon-induced neutron rate, defined as the average number of detected neutrons per detected muon, was measured as 0.079 ± 0.003 (stat.) neutrons/muon using neutron-capture signals above 0.55 MeV in a time window of 40-190 µs after the muon trigger. Accurate Monte Carlo simulations of the neutron production, transport and detection in a precisely modeled laboratory and experimental setup using the GEANT4 toolkit gave a result 1.8 times higher than the measured value. The difference greatly exceeds all statistical and systematic uncertainties. As the vast majority of neutrons detected in the current setup were produced in lead we evaluated from our measurements the neutron yield in lead as (1.31 ± 0.06) × 10- 3 neutrons/muon/(g/cm2) for a mean muon energy of about 260 GeV. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. We study $\pi\pi$ correlations in the exclusive reaction $\ppb \to 2\pi^+2\pi^-$ at rest measured by the CPLEAR experiment. Avoiding the introduction of an arbitrary reference sample, we analyse differential distributions for equal charge pion pairs removing the phase-space factor event by event. A peak at small relative momenta is most pronounced for large total momentum of the pair. The physical implications of bosonic symmetrization for the properties of the pion source, in particular its radius, are briefly discussed. The two extremes considered are the chaotic Hanbury-Brown--Twiss mechanism and the coherent Skyrmion model.

The neutral kaon regeneration amplitude in carbon at momenta between 250 and 750~MeV/$c$ was determined by measuring the interference of inherent and coherently regenerated \PKS\ amplitudes. This interference appears in the rates of initially pure (tagged) \PKz\ and \PaKz\ decaying to \Pgpp\Pgpm\ after crossing a carbon absorber.

- Abstract
The ratio R between the branching fractions of (p) over bar p --> KSKS and (p) over bar p --> KSKL for antiprotons annihilating at rest in gaseous hydrogen at 27 bar pressure was measured with the CPLEAR detector to be R(27 bar) = 0.037 +/- 0.002. The fraction of P-wave annihilation at rest at this target density was deduced to be 0.45 +/- 0.06. A value of R was also measured at 15 bar, with less statistics, yielding R(15 bar) = 0.041 +/- 0.009. (C) 1997 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. Physics Letters B

Particle Physics - Experiment - Abstract
The interference between CP-conserving $\ks$ and $\kl \rightarrow \threepi$ decay amplitudes was observed by studying the decay rate asymmetries between initial $\ko$ and $\kob$ separately for the phase space regions $E_{\mbox{\rm \scriptsize CM}}(\pi^+)> E_{\mbox{\rm \scriptsize CM}}(\pi^-)$ and $E_{\mbox{\rm \scriptsize CM}}(\pi^+)< E_{\mbox{\rm \scriptsize CM}}(\pi^-)$. For the parameter $\lambda$ we found $\mbox{\rm Re}(\lambda )=0.036\pm0.010(\mbox{\rm stat.}) ^{+0.002}_{-0.003} (\mbox{\rm syst.)}$ and $\mbox{Im}(\lambda)$ consistent with zero, leading for the CP-conserving $\ks \rightarrow \threepi$ decay, to a branching ratio $\mbox{\rm B} = \left[4.1 ^{+2.5}_{-1.9 } (\mbox{\rm stat.}) ^{+0.5} _{-0.6} (\mbox{\rm syst.)}\right] \times 10^{-7}$.

The essential characteristics of the neutral kaon system and the way CP, T, and possible CPT violations may be observed in it are recalled. The principle of the CPLEAH experiment is presented CPLEAH experimental results in the semi-leptonic decay channels are given and discussed. It is shown, in particular, that direct. time reversal invariance violation will be experimentally observed for the first time.

Particle Physics - Experiment - Abstract
The Bose-Einstein correlations (BEG) observed in hadronic experiments are reviewed. Emphasis is given to the factors that can modify the BEC parameters. The experimental results are studied and the behavior of the parameters is examined. The available data and the currently used parametrizations seem to indicate that the radius of particle sources does not depend on the energy of the system. However, new types of parametrization have been introduced and applied in certain experiments, which show a different behavior. In these cases, the data are not conclusive about the type of parametrization and the parameter values. Physics of Atomic Nuclei
