Abstract

In this work we report on a self-assembled growth of a Ge quantum dot lattice in a single 600-nm-thick Ge+Al2O3 layer during magnetron sputtering deposition of a Ge+Al2O3 mixture at an elevated substrate temperature. The self-assembly results in the formation of a well-ordered threedimensional body-centered tetragonal quantum dot lattice within the whole deposited volume. The quantum dots formed are very small in size less than 4.0 nm, have a narrow size distribution and a large packing density. The parameters of the quantum dot lattice can be tuned by changing the deposition parameters. The self-ordering of the quantum dots is explained by diffusionmediated nucleation and surface-morphology effects and simulated by a kinetic Monte Carlo model.

2. Boundary corrections for splitting methods in the time integration of multidimensional parabolic problems

Abstract

This work considers two boundary correction techniques to mitigate the reduction in the temporal order of convergence in PDE sense (i.e., when both the space and time resolutions tend to zero independently of each other) of $d$ dimension space-discretized parabolic problems on a rectangular domain subject to time dependent boundary conditions. We make use of the MoL approach (method of lines) where the space discretization is made with central differences of order four and the time integration is carried out with $s$-stage AMF-W-methods. The time integrators are of ADI-type (alternating direction implicit by using a directional splitting) and of higher order than the usual ones appearing in the literature which only reach order 2. Besides, the techniques here explained also work for most of splitting methods, when directional splitting is used. A remarkable fact is that with these techniques, the time integrators recover the temporal order of PDE-convergence at the level of time-independent boundary conditions.

3. Study of Multiuser Multiple-Antenna Wireless Communications Systems Based on Super-Resolution Arrays

Abstract

This work studies multiple-antenna wireless communication systems based on super-resolution arrays (SRAs). We consider the uplink of a multiple-antenna system in which users communicate with a multiple-antenna base station equipped with SRAs. In particular, we develop linear minimum mean-square error (MMSE) receive filters along with linear and successive interference cancellation receivers for processing signals with the difference co-array originating from the SRAs. We then derive analytical expressions to assess the achievable sum-rates associated with the proposed multiple-antenna systems with SRAs. Simulations show that the proposed multiple-antenna systems with SRAs outperform existing systems with standard arrays that have a larger number of antenna elements., Comment: 3 figures, 7 pages

5. Quantitative constraints on modified gravity paradigms

Abstract

We use low-redshift background cosmology data to place quantitative constraints on three separate modified gravity models, each of which aims to explain the low-redshift acceleration through a different physical mechanism. The Lifshitz cosmology is effectively a parametric extension of the canonical $\Lambda$CDM model, where a time-dependent cosmological constant originates from vacuum energy. The Infinite Statistics model is also a parametric extension of $\Lambda$CDM, where the dark energy is dynamic and originates from the curvature of a dual space-time. We show that the data restricts the additional parameters in these models to be consistent with their $\Lambda$CDM values, and in particular that it implies that the theoretically predicted value for a dimensionless coupling parameter in the Lifshitz model is ruled out at more than six standard deviations. In the Regge-Teitelboim model, gravity is described by embedding the usual space-time manifold in a fixed higher-dimensional background, and there is no parametric $\Lambda$CDM limit. We study several separate realizations of the model, respectively introduced by Davidson, by Fabi \textit{et al.}, and by Stern \& Xu, and show that the first two are ruled out by the low-redshift data we use, while the latter is consistent with this data but requires a non-standard value of the matter density. Overall, our analysis highlights the tight constraints imposed by current data on the allowed low-redshift deviations from the standard $\Lambda$CDM background evolution., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, Phys. This work studies coarse quantization-aware BD (${\scriptstyle\mathrm{CQA-BD}}$) and coarse quantization-aware RBD (${\scriptstyle\mathrm{CQA-RBD}}$) precoding algorithms for large-scale MU-MIMO systems with coarsely quantized signals and proposes the coarse-quantization most advantageous allocation strategy (${\scriptstyle\mathrm{CQA-MAAS}}$) power allocation algorithm for linearly-precoded MU-MIMO systems. An analysis of the sum-rate along with studies of computational complexity is also carried out. 14. Study of Block Diagonalization Precoding and Power Allocation for Multiple-Antenna Systems with Coarsely Quantized Signals

Abstract

In this work, we present block diagonalization and power allocation algorithms for large-scale multiple-antenna systems with coarsely quantized signals. In particular, we develop Coarse Quantization-Aware Block Diagonalization ${\scriptstyle\mathrm{\left(CQA-BD\right)}}$ and Coarse Quantization-Aware Regularized Block Diagonalization ${\scriptstyle\mathrm{\left(CQA-RBD\right)}}$ precoding algorithms that employ the Bussgang decomposition and can mitigate the effects of low-resolution signals and interference. Moreover, we also devise the Coarse Quantization-Aware Most Advantageous Allocation Strategy ${\scriptstyle\mathrm{\left(CQA-MAAS\right)}}$ power allocation algorithm to improve the sum rate of precoders that operate with low-resolution signals. An analysis of the sum-rate performance is carried out along with computational complexity and power consumption studies of the proposed and existing techniques. Simulation results illustrate the performance of the proposed ${\scriptstyle\mathrm{CQA-BD}}$ and ${\scriptstyle\mathrm{CQA-RBD}}$ precoding algorithms, and the proposed ${\scriptstyle\mathrm{CQA-MAAS}}$ power allocation strategy against existing approaches., Comment: 9 figures, 33 pages

Abstract

Results on unconditional convergence in the Maximum norm for ADI-type methods, such as the Douglas method, applied to the time integration of semilinear parabolic problems are quite difficult to get, mainly when the number of space dimensions $m$ is greater than two. Such a result is obtained here under quite general conditions on the PDE problem in case that time-independent Dirichlet boundary conditions are imposed. To get these bounds, a theorem that guarantees, in some sense, power-boundeness of the stability function independently of both the space and time resolutions is proved.

17. Study of Coarse Quantization-Aware Block Diagonalization Algorithms for MIMO Systems with Low Resolution

Abstract

It is known that the estimated energy consumption of digital-to analog converters (DACs) is around 30\% of the energy consumed by analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) keeping fixed the sampling rate and bit resolution. Assuming that similarly to ADC, DAC dissipation doubles with every extra bit of resolution, a decrease in two resolution bits, for instance from 4 to 2 bits, represents a 75$\% $ lower dissipation. The current limitations in sum-rates of 1-bit quantization have motivated researchers to consider extra bits in resolution to obtain higher levels of sum-rates. Following this, we devise coarse quantization-aware precoding using few bits for the broadcast channel of multiple-antenna systems based on the Bussgang theorem. In particular, we consider block diagonalization algorithms, which have not been considered in the literature so far. The sum-rates achieved by the proposed Coarse Quantization-Aware Block Diagonalization (CQA-BD) and its regularized version (CQA-RBD) are superior to those previously reported in the literature. Abstract

In this work, we present direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation algorithms based on the Krylov subspace that effectively exploit prior knowledge of the signals that impinge on a sensor array. The proposed multi-step knowledge-aided iterative conjugate gradient (CG) (MS-KAI-CG) algorithms perform subtraction of the unwanted terms found in the estimated covariance matrix of the sensor data. Furthermore, we develop a version of MS-KAI-CG equipped with forward-backward averaging, called MS-KAI-CG-FB, which is appropriate for scenarios with correlated signals. Unlike current knowledge-aided methods, which take advantage of known DoAs to enhance the estimation of the covariance matrix of the input data, the MS-KAI-CG algorithms take advantage of the knowledge of the structure of the forward-backward smoothed covariance matrix and its disturbance terms. Abstract

In this work, we propose a subspace-based algorithm for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation applied to the signals impinging on a two-level nested array, referred to as multi-step knowledge-aided iterative nested MUSIC method (MS-KAI-Nested-MUSIC), which significantly improves the accuracy of the original Nested-MUSIC. Differently from existing knowledge-aided methods applied to uniform linear arrays (ULAs), which make use of available known DOAs to improve the estimation of the covariance matrix of the input data, the proposed Multi-Step KAI-Nested-MU employs knowledge of the structure of the augmented sample covariance matrix, which is obtained by exploiting the difference co-array structure covariance matrix, and its perturbation terms and the gradual incorporation of prior knowledge, which is obtained on line. Abstract

The XIFU X-ray spectrometer instrument on the future Athena mission needs X-ray calibration sources to calibrate the gains of the individual detector pixels. For this purpose, electronically controlled Modulated X-ray Sources (MXS) are proposed, similar to the calibrations sources used on the Hitomi spacecraft and which will also fly on its successor, XARM. Here we present a simulation package based on the particle transport GEANT4 toolkit. Using this package, we compute the results for different targets and window configurations for the MXS's. The simulations expose the trade-offs to be made to select the optimum source configuration for the Athena/XIFU and XARM/Resolve spectrometer instruments., Comment: Poster presentation at the SPIE conference on Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation

Abstract

Abstract

Multi Micro-Channel-Plate Photomultiplier tubes (MCP-PMT) with High Collection Efficiency (Hi-CE) MCPs are developed and characterised. With these Hi-CE MCPs more than 90% of photoelectrons emitted from the photocathode can be detected; this is in contrast to conventional MCPs where about 50% of photoelectrons are lost at the MCP stage. The drawback of the Hi-CE MCPs is a small degradation of the transfer time spread (TTS). However for applications where no sub-ns time resolution is required the implementation of Hi-CE MCPs is extremely beneficial, as it improves the detection efficiency of the MCP-PMT almost by a factor of two., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

This article describes a novel minimally invasive technique for bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) that aims to reduce surgical trauma while maintaining bone overlap and rigid internal fixation for proper consolidation of the bone segments. The technique involves a small vestibular mucoperiosteal incision made on the lateral aspect of the mandible between the first and second molars, enabling a standard ramus split, surgical segment movement, and miniplate fixation. A retrospective evaluation of 67 consecutive patients who underwent BSSO using this protocol showed favorable split of the mandible with no unfavorable splits or non-union. Patients were discharged from hospital within an average of 17 h with minimal postoperative complications. This technique provides good surgical visualization with a very small incision and allows standard BSSO surgery without difficulty. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The understanding of the relationship between topology and behaviour in interconnected networks would allow to characterise and predict behaviour in many real complex networks since both are usually not simultaneously known. Most previous studies have focused on the relationship between topology and synchronisation. In this work, we provide analytical formulas that shows how topology drives complex behaviour: chaos, information, and weak or strong synchronisation; in multiplex networks with constant Jacobian. We also study this relationship numerically in multiplex networks of Hindmarsh-Rose neurons. Whereas behaviour in the analytically tractable network is a direct but not trivial consequence of the spectra of eigenvalues of the Laplacian matrix, where behaviour may strongly depend on the break of symmetry in the topology of interconnections, in Hindmarsh-Rose neural networks the nonlinear nature of the chemical synapses breaks the elegant mathematical connection between the spectra of eigenvalues of the Laplacian matrix and the behaviour of the network, creating networks whose behaviour strongly depends on the nature (chemical or electrical) of the inter synapses.

Abstract

A new Small Angle Neutron Scattering instrument is proposed for the European Spallation Source. The pulsed source requires a time-of-flight analysis of the gathered neutrons at the detector. The optimal instrument length is found to be rather large, which allows for a polarizer and a versatile collimation. The polarizer allows for studying magnetic samples and incoherent background subtraction. The wide collimation will host VSANS and SESANS options that increase the resolution of the instrument towards um and tens of um, respectively. Two 1m2 area detectors will cover a large solid angle simultaneously. The expected gains for this new instrument will lie in the range between 20 and 36, depending on the assessment criteria, when compared to up-to-date reactor based instruments. This will open new perspectives for fast kinetics, weakly scattering samples, and multi-dimensional contrast variation studies., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

The CMS GEM collaboration is considering Gas Electron Multipliers (GEMs) for upgrading the CMS forward muon system in the 1.5<|eta|<2.4 endcap region. GEM detectors can provide precision tracking and fast trigger information. They would improve the CMS muon trigger and muon momentum resolution and provide missing redundancy in the high-eta region. Employing a new faster construction and assembly technique, we built four full-scale Triple-GEM muon detectors for the inner ring of the first muon endcap station. We plan to install these or further improved versions in CMS during the first long LHC shutdown in 2013/14 for continued testing. These detectors are designed for the stringent rate and resolution requirements in the increasingly hostile environments expected at CMS after the second long LHC shutdown in 2018/19. The new prototypes were studied in muon/pion beams at the CERN SPS. We discuss our experience with constructing the new full-scale production prototypes and present preliminary performance results from the beam test. We also tested smaller Triple-GEM prototypes with zigzag readout strips with 2 mm pitch in these beams and measured a spatial resolution of 73 microns. •In a RIETE registry analysis of 103 818 patients with VTE, 20.3% were tested for IT, showing a substantial variance in outcomes.•A thoughtful IT testing approach should consider patients’ VTE risk factors and comorbidities.
