14. WASH and biosecurity interventions for reducing burdens of infection, antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance in animal agricultural settings: a One Health mixed methods systematic review

- Abstract
Background: Infection prevention and control (IPC) is recognised as essential to addressing the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in human health, food production and the environment. How best to address this through a One Health perspective remains a challenge. This systematic review addresses this gap by identifying and synthesising evidence from interventions designed to improve water, hygiene, sanitation (WASH), and biosecurity in animal agriculture and in people that live and/or work with animals. This review aimed to capture evidence of effects of all types of intervention and across different settings. Methods: We conducted a systematic search for studies that reported on WASH and biosecurity interventions with the potential to reduce the burden of infections and reliance on antibiotics in animal production for populations living with animals and/or involved in agriculture/aquaculture with a primary focus on LMICs. We searched the following databases: Web of Science, PubMed, OVID, ProQuest, Epistemonikos, Trip, AgEcon, and Cochrane Library. For articles in Spanish, we searched Scielo, BIREME, E-Revistas, Redalyc, Lilacs, AfricaPortal, IMSEAR and WPRIM. A hand search of literature was also conducted in relevant sources, and Google Scholar and Open Grey were used for grey literature. The main outcomes of interest were: (i) reduction of infections/cases, (ii) reduction of bacterial load, and (iii) reduction of antimicrobial use and AMR. We extracted data from selected studies, performed a narrative synthesis, and developed a framework. PROSPERO Registration: The protocol for the systematic review was registered at PROSPERO, registration number CRD42020162345. Findings: A total of 104 studies were included in this systematic review. The majority of studies (64/104) (61.5%) were conducted in HICs, especially in Europe and the USA. Only 13 (12.5%) studies took place in LMICs. The majority of studies (77) were animal based, followed by 12 targeting both animals and the environment, nine focused exclusively on the environment, and only one study was exclusively about humans. Most studies were conducted in poultry (36) and pigs (27), and assessed impacts on multiple types of bacteria (commonly Salmonella spp. and Campylobacter spp.). Eighty-seven (87) studies assessed impact on IPC, 3 on AMU, and 14 on AMR. The interventions were classified as follows: 57 applied biological or chemical products to eliminate pathogens; 26 modified infrastructure and apparatus; 15 were educational/behavioural and one was a structural intervention. Around 52.8% (55/104) studies included WASH interventions focused on water quality (20), water quantity (2), hygiene (30), and sanitation (3). Likewise, 47.1% (49/104) included biosecurity interventions focused on bio-management (34), bio-containment (10), and bio-exclusion (5). Positive impacts were reported for 64 (61.5%) interventions, on infection burden (54/87), antibiotic use (3/3) or AMR (7/14). The majority were non-randomised studies (55), although a quarter were randomised controlled trials (26). A total of 27 studies were classified as having low risk of bias, 21 moderate and 56 high risk of bias. Interpretation: This review identifies a number of effective interventions to reduce the burden of infections, antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic use in animal agricultural settings. Interventions which undertook bio-management and bio-containment measures appeared to have positive effects most often. These measures attempted to create and maintain a conducive environment for animal raising in terms of physical infrastructure and protocols. The few studies reporting sanitation measures - which were similar to bio-containment interventions - all reported positive effects. By contrast, efforts to impact water quantity, water quality, and hygiene had more mixed effects on the outcomes assessed. Bio-exclusion interventions had mostly negative effects. Risk of bias was high or moderate in many studies, however, and publication bias should also be considered. The paucity of studies evaluating structural interventions needs to be addressed. There are opportunities to learn from biosecurity Interventions for WASH and we propose the 'A' In WASH represents both 'Animals' and 'Air' in recognition of pathways of infection that can be addressed to also impact AMR.

Aim: To assess the effect of immersion in distilled water or phosphate‐buffered saline (PBS) on the solubility, volumetric change and presence of voids of calcium silicate‐based root canal sealers (TotalFill BC, Sealer Plus BC and Bio‐C), in comparison with the gold standard epoxy resin‐based sealer (AH Plus). Methodology: All properties were evaluated after immersion in distilled water or PBS. Solubility was determined by the percentage of mass loss, whereas volumetric change and presence of voids were evaluated by micro‐computed tomography, after 7 days of immersion. The volumetric change and percentage of voids between the baseline (after setting) and the experimental period were calculated. Statistical analysis was performed using one‐way anova and Tukey's or Student's t‐tests (α = 0.05). Results: The calcium silicate‐based sealers had significantly greater solubility and volumetric loss than AH Plus, after immersion in distilled water or PBS (P < 0.05). Bio‐C had the greatest solubility (P < 0.05), followed by TotalFill BC and Sealer Plus BC, which were similar (P > 0.05). Regarding the volumetric change, AH Plus had a volume increase, with similar values in distilled water and PBS (P > 0.05). TotalFill BC, Sealer Plus BC and Bio‐C had a similar volumetric change (P > 0.05). The calcium silicate‐based materials had the greatest solubility and volume loss after immersion in distilled water (P < 0.05). There was no difference in the percentage of voids amongst the sealers, before and after immersion in distilled water or PBS (P > 0.05). Conclusions: TotalFill BC, Sealer Plus BC and Bio‐C had significantly greater solubility and volumetric loss than AH Plus. Although storage in PBS significantly reduced the solubility and volumetric change of calcium silicate‐based sealers, their solubility remained above that recommend by ISO 6876. All the sealers evaluated had low and similar voids, even after immersion in distilled water or PBS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on measurements of the inclusive production of J, $\psi'$ and $\mathrm{\chi_c}$ mesons in hadronic Z decays, based on 3.2 million hadronic events collected using the L3 detector at LEP. The J and $\psi'$ mesons are reconstructed through their decays into lepton pairs, while the $\mathrm{\chi_c}$ mesons are reconstructed via the decay mode $ \mathrm{\chi_c} \rightarrow \mathrm{J} + \gamma $. The measured branching fractions are: \begin{eqnarray*} \mathrm{Br(Z \rightarrow J + X)} &=& (3.40 \pm 0.23\:(\mathrm {stat.}) \pm 0.27\:(\mathrm {sys.}))\,\times\,10^{-3} \\ \mathrm{Br(Z \rightarrow \psi' + X)} &=& (1.6 \pm 0.5\:(\mathrm {stat.}) \pm 0.3\:(\mathrm {sys.}))\,\times\,10^{-3} \\ \mathrm{Br(Z \rightarrow \chi_{c1} + X)} &=& (2.7 \pm 0.6\:(\mathrm {stat.})\pm 0.5\:(\mathrm {sys.}))\, \times\,10^{-3}. \\ \end{eqnarray*} In the absence of a clear $\mathrm{\chi_{c2}}$ signal, the upper limit at 90\% C.L. is set: \mathrm{ Br(Z \rightarrow \chi_{c2} + X) 3.2\,\times\,10^{-3}}. \end{document}

We report on the measurement of W-boson pair-production with the L3 detector at LEP at an average centre-of-mass energy of 172.13 GeV. In a data sample corresponding to a total luminosity of 10.25 pb(-1) we select 110 four-fermion events with pairs of hadronic jets or leptons with high invariant masses. Branching fractions of W decays into different fermion-antifermion pairs are determined with and without the assumption of charged-current lepton universality. The branching fraction for hadronic W decays is measured to be: B(W --> hadrons) = 64.2(-3.8)(+3.7) (stat.) +/- 0.5 (syst.) %. Combining all final states the total cross section for W-pair production is measured to be: sigma(ww) = 12.27(-1.32)(+1.41) (stat.) +/- 0.23 (syst.) pb. The results are in good agreement with the Standard Model. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

On the basis of about 3.1 million Z decays collected with the L3 detector at LEP, we observe that the production of these particles is well modelled by string fragmentation. - Abstract
The present contribution is divided into three parts: First, I present the theoretical framework that guided the research on the family relationships we conducted within the Family Studies and Research University Centre of the Catholic University of Milan. Second, I give a brief overview of some of the research findings that in the past several years we obtained on the topic of couple functioning. Finally, I summarize how our theory and research informed the model of interventions we have designed and implemented with and for families for about a decade. The underlying idea is the need for theory, research, and intervention all to be connected when dealing with promoting family ties and competences (e.g., Bradbury, Karney, Iafrate, & Donato, 2009). I focus especially on the couple relationship, because of my specific research interests, but many of the things I present in this contribution, especially parts 1 and 3, apply to family relationships in general.

- Abstract
BACKGROUND: In the Iberian Peninsula, the Mirandese dialect, spoken in Miranda do Douro (Portugal) close to the north-eastern border with Spain, has attracted much attention. Aim, subjects and methods: This study focuses on providing further insight into the connections forged between Miranda do Douro and regions in the nearby Province of Zamora. This is in order to better assess the extent to which such relations could have been detained by the current patterns of genetic diversity of the populations, whilst contributing to refining the knowledge on patterns of micro-differentiation within the Peninsula. The genetic characterization of both populations was performed through the analysis of X-chromosomal markers: X-STRs and X-indels.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The results showed that Miranda do Douro tended to present slightly lower levels of diversity in comparison to the other studied regions, which can be a discreet sign of isolation of that population over the years that might have led the way to the preservation of a language not spoken anywhere else in the country. The analysis of X-STRs particularly brought to light the presence of a subtle population sub-structure at the micro-geographical area encompassing the north-eastern border, which seems to portray the importance of the political border as a mechanism withholding gene flow between the two countries.

O presente estudo visa analisar qual o grau de mudança verificado nas práticas de Controlo de Gestão de empresas a operar em Portugal na última década, e contribuir para o conhecimento da natureza e causas dessa mudança. Quatro questões de investigação foram colocadas na preparação do estudo: (i) ‘Existiu ou não alteração nas práticas e/ou sistemas de Controlo de Gestão das empresas a operar em Portugal, e em caso afirmativo, qual o grau de mudança?’; (ii) ‘Quais os factores que provocaram a mudança?’; (iii) ‘Quais as principais técnicas adoptadas pelas empresas?’; e (iv) ‘Quais os factores que provocaram a inibição de mudança no Controlo de Gestão em Portugal’. Para tal foi replicado o questionário elaborado por Burns et al. (2002) no Reino Unido. O questionário foi enviado aos directores fnanceiros e controllers de gestão de 687 empresas de pequena, média e grande dimensão, tendo sido recebidas 116 respostas. À semelhança dos resultados obtidos no Reino Unido, as empresas a operar em Portugal têm vindo a alterar de forma substancial as suas práticas de Controlo de Gestão, não tendo sido encontrado suporte empírico para o argumento de Johnson e Kaplan (1987) relativo ao desfasamento entre as práticas de Controlo de Gestão das empresas e o seu ambiente de negócio.

O aumento do número de empresas certificadas em Portugal e no Mundo tem vindo a demonstrar que a certificação é cada vez mais encarada como um objetivo estratégico. Mas quais serão as verdadeiras razões que justificam esta aposta dos gestores? O aumento da quota de mercado, maior competitividade ou simplesmente a melhoria da imagem organizacional? Tendo por base a evolução das certificações ISO 9001, ISO 14001 e OHSAS 18001/NP 4397 em Portugal, de 1995 até ao final de 2007, procurou analisar-se qual o nível de importância que as empresas portuguesas atribuem à certificação de uma forma geral e quais os fatores que mais contribuem para tal. A presente investigação baseou-se num estudo sobre a génese da Gestão da Qualidade e a sua evolução histórica, tendo sido suportada pela realização de um inquérito a 364 empresas certificadas com base nos referenciais acima mencionados. Os dados recolhidos foram tratados em SPSS e através da aplicação do modelo de regressão ordinal foi possível identificar os três fatores determinantes da importância da certificação – «Reduzir custos e desperdícios (retrabalho, devoluções)», «Melhorar internamente a organização (eficiência dos processos)» e «Aumentar a quota de mercado/número de clientes», referidos por ordem de importância. É de salientar a boa capacidade preditiva do modelo que classificou corretamente 72,3% dos casos.

Este artigo apresenta uma forma de construir o conceito da função logarítmica a partir da modelagem de um problema que conduza à função exponencial. Distingue e utiliza representação de gráficos de funções definidas em conjuntos discretos e contínuos para, a partir de simetrias de funções inversas e respectivas representações, obter a representação da função inversa da exponencial, chamada logarítmica.
