22. Pollination systems and nectar rewards in four Andean species of Salvia (Lamiaceae)

Abstract

Adaptation to the most effective pollinator is often conceived as the primary explanation of widespread convergence in flower phenotypes. However, specialization does not exclude the presence of other floral visitors, which may contribute to plant reproduction. Here we combined observations about pollinators' visitation rates and effectiveness with nectar secretion dynamics and sugar composition in four Andean Salvia species from Bolivia. The study revealed a wider diversity than expected both in pollination systems and in nectar strategies. While Salvia haenkei Benth. and Salvia stachydifolia Benth. were almost exclusively pollinated by either hummingbirds or bees, respectively mixed pollination was found in Salvia orbignaei Benth., a species previously described as hummingbird-pollinated. Salvia personata Epling. was exclusively pollinated by syrphid flies. Differences in nectar volume and sugar concentration were found between insect-pollinated species and mixed- or hummingbird-pollinated species. However, the four Salvia species displayed different strategies regarding nectar sugar composition, with sucrose-rich nectar in Salvia orbignaei, glucose-rich nectar in Salvia haenkei and Salvia stachydifolia, and glucose-rich nectar lacking fructose in Salvia personata, suggesting an adaptation to syrphid fly pollination. Our results provide a clearer picture of floral trait evolution in Salvia and highlight the contribution of some pollinators different from those expected according to the floral syndromes. Abstract

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) provide a means of examining the common genetic variation underlying a range of traits and disorders. In addition, it is hoped that GWAS may provide a means of differentiating affected from unaffected individuals. This has potential applications in the area of risk prediction. Current attempts to address this problem focus on using the polygene risk score (PRS) to predict case-control status on the basis of GWAS data. However this approach has so far had limited success for complex traits such as schizophrenia (SZ). This is essentially a classification problem. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been shown in recent years to be highly effective in such applications. Here we apply an ANN to the problem of distinguishing SZ patients from unaffected controls. We compare the effectiveness of the ANN with the PRS in classifying individuals by case-control status based only on genetic data from a GWAS. We use the schizophrenia dataset from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC) for this study. Our analysis indicates that the ANN is more sensitive to sample size than the PRS. As larger and larger sample sizes become available, we suggest that ANNs are a promising alternative to the PRS for classification and risk prediction for complex genetic disorders.

Abstract

Pollinator richness, abundance and visitation frequency may be affected by the abundance of floral resources and abiotic factors, influencing plant reproductive success. We analysed whether the diversity, abundance and frequency of butterfly visitation on Lantana camara vary across the year in a tropical urban landscape and whether this variation in butterfly community influences plant’s reproductive success. A two-period survey, referred to here as rainier and drier seasons, was carried out in 12 spatially independent plants. Five pollination treatments were applied: single visit, hand cross-pollination, hand self-pollination, spontaneous self-pollination and open pollination (control). A total of 15,749 flowers were used for fruit production analysis. Butterfly richness, abundance and the reproductive success of L. camara increased in the drier season. Open pollination was ninefold more reproductively successful during the drier season. Fruit production of hand cross-pollinated plants was threefold higher than open-pollinated plants during the rainier season. No significant difference was found between these treatments in the drier season, attesting the highest abundance of pollination during this period. We provide evidence that changes in the pollinator community affect fruit production. The increase in pollinator diversity allows different visitors to pollinate the plant, increasing fruit set through functional complementarity. This effort establishes baseline data of plant–pollinator interactions for further long-term investigations across different weather seasons. The understanding of L. camara and butterflies’ synergism will support conservation measures of pollinator populations.
